Celebrate Czech Heritage

October is Czech Heritage Month, and there are many ways to

celebrate all across Texas. See pages 25 to 29 for several exciting Czechthemed activities in October. Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas is this Sunday, October 7. The day is always filled with great music, delicious food, and wonderful people. Activities will take place at the African-American Museum located near the Fair Park entrance. SPJST will sponsor a booth at the event. A tentative entertainment schedule appears on page 25. Czech Feszt is November 3 Czech fun will carry over into the first weekend of November. On the 3rd, SPJST is a proud co-sponsor of Czech Feszt in Downtown Temple. The event will feature a great lineup of bands that celebrate the musical heritage of the Czech people, as well as Texas’ roots. The schedule is: Noon to 2 p.m. - Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six; 2 to 4 p.m. - Vrazels’ Polka Band; 6 to 8 p.m. - Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen; and 9 p.m. to Midnight - The Bobby Flores Band. Lodge 47, Seaton member Michael Morris is the Czech Feszt Entertainment Chairman. The festival is looking for a variety of delicious foods, with an emphasis on Czech foods and flavors. For more information on becoming a food vendor, please contact SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride (254) 773-1575. The festival is also looking for arts and craft vendors, especially those who have homemade, Czech, Texas, Americana or other such works. If you think this event might be a good fit for your items, please contact Czech Heritage Museum Executive Director Sandi Wicker (254) 899-2935. A progressive 42 tournament will be held in the Santa Fe Depot from noon to 5 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers.

For more information, contact SPJST Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (254) 773-1575. Do you have a great kolache recipe? Czech Feszt will include a kolache baking contest in three classes (fruit, cheese and poppyseed) and three divisions (adult and youth nonprofessional and professional bakers). Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded. For more information, contact FSS Tammy Martinez. My exciting part in Czech Feszt is coordinating the Little Miss and Little Mister Czech Feszt pageant for ages three to 25 (girls) and three to 10 (boys). Complete information and entry forms for this contest and all other parts of Czech Feszt will be in next week’s Vestnik. Stay tuned . . . October is Czech Heritage Month The Taylor Czech Chorus recently released a CD entitled “Songs of Our Heritage” which includes 23 wellknown Czech songs. The Chorus voices are soothing and will inspire you to sing-along. The CD includes favorite Czech songs like Rostou, Rostou, Rostou; Na Sumave Je Dolina; Nemelem; Bylo To Jeden Krat v Nedeli; Kdyz Jsme Opustili Prahu; Vcera Jsem Te Cekala; Husicka Divoka; Dobre Ceske Kolace; and my all-time personal favorite because I think I learned to sing it when I was about two or three years old—A Ja Sam! In addition, the CD features the instrumental talents of Sid Krhovkak (rhythm guitar), Nolin Werchan (accordion), Buster Pavlicek (accordion), Diane Volek (piano), and Jim Palla (bass guitar). The Taylor Czech Chorus was organized in 1968 as a group of individuals dedicated to preserving the heritage of Czech music. The CD is a great deal at $16.50 (includes postage). For ordering information, write to Diane Volek, P.O. Box 48, Taylor, Texas 76574. —SPJST—

Texas Observes Czech Heritage Month in October Dear Brothers and Sisters, It has been eight years since the 76th Texas Legislature made Czech Heritage Month official in 1999. Czech Heritage Month provides us with an excellent opportunity to promote the SPJST in our lodges and communities. With regards to promoting the Society, our By-Laws provide us with three key objectives: First, the SPJST exists to provide security for its members and their families through the sale of life insurance. Second, the SPJST exists to provide a wholesome family environment for the entire family.

And third, the SPJST exists to preserve and to promote Czech heritage and culture. Celebrate Czech Heritage Month and spread the good word about SPJST. Our great and enduring strength resides in you and your tremendous capacity to bring fraternalism to life. Inform a friend or neighbor about membership and invite them to accompany you to your next lodge meeting or event. Thank you for your kind attention, and keep up the good work! Na shledanou! On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next meeting and determine which dates you want to

We will not have access to the buses during the day at Six Flags due to the increased charge of having a bus on sight. You are welcome to bring coolers for the ride up there and back. From the President’s Department

State FAC announces fall activities SPJST Receives Platinum Award Recall Join Hands Day last May when SPJST adults and youth members joined with other community service groups? A total of 40 lodges participated in that effort and made many good things happen in their communities. For our outstanding involvement in the Join Hands Day program, the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), at their 121st Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, recognized the SPJST as a “Platinum” award winner. When SPJST was recognized as a “Silver Star” award winner last year, we set a goal to go for the gold in 2007. Well, you leapfrogged the gold award and went straight to top—the “Platinum” award. We are proud of all our lodges who participated this year. Keep up the good work. Start thinking about next year’s project, which will be May 3, 2008. You can get a jump on your ’08 project by referring to the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org. We have set the pace, and we have some high standards to live up to, but I know we can count on you to come through next year. Each year, 10 Join Hands Day projects are selected to receive the Excellence Award. SPJST scored another first in this category. Members of the home offices of SPJST, KJZT (Catholic Family Fraternal), KJT (Catholic Union of Texas), TCHCC (Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center), and SPJST Lodge 258, Seguin joined hands to perform many tasks at TCHCC. This project was one of 10 out of 1,000 to receive the Excellence Award. This group will be receiving a check for $1,000 and a trophy for their outstanding work. It just goes to show that once you put your mind to it, you can achieve great things. Take our recent showing at NFCA as a testament to the outstanding efforts you are making in your fraternal programming. It is indeed possible to reach for and achieve the best! But wait, there is more. Robert (Bob) Hagen of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point who was selected as the SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year in February was selected as the National Fraternalist of the Year by the NFCA. What an honor for SPJST to receive this many awards, and it is all

of the members and lodges that earned these citations. Our hats are off to all of you! Czech Heritage Month in October Many lodges are planning special events in observance of Czech heritage month during the month of October. This includes covered “Czech dish” socials at their October meetings. Sunday, October 7 will be a special day in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It is Heritage Day at the State Fair, and SPJST lodges in the area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. If you have never been to the State Fair, consider making the trip. There is a lot to see and do. Plus, on October 7, you can enjoy the added bonus of the Heritage Day. Your lodge can fulfill one or more categories on the fraternal incentive program by hosting a Czech heritage event. For those planning to attend Heritage Day at the State Fair, please know that the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra will perform at 10:30 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 11 a.m. The Czech Children Dancers take the stage at 11:30 a.m. followed by the beseda dancers at 11:40 a.m. As an added bonus, attendees will be treated to a performance by the Petr Micka Cimbalova Orchestra at 3:30 p.m. and at 5:15 p.m. District Fall Fun Days District fall fun days continue during the month of October. Please make plans to attend the fun day in your district. I have had the opportunity to attend three fun days. Everyone in attendance has really enjoyed the day. The following districts will have their fun days as listed: District One—October 14 Hosted by Lodge 9, Snook District Three—October 28 Hosted by Lodge 154, Fort Worth District Four—TBA District Six—October 14 Hosted by Lodge 240, Bay City Again, here is another category that your lodge can fulfill on the fraternal incentive program.

Czech Feszt Day in Temple Please mark your calendar to be in Temple on Saturday, November 3. The City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) are hosting a celebration of Czech heritage and culture on this date in the Santa Fe Gardens in downtown Temple from 10 a.m. to midnight. Many events and entertainment are being planned throughout the day. Please watch the Vestnik for a schedule of events as more are scheduled each week. Please note that an entry form for the kolache baking contest is available from Tammy at the Home Office. Featured bands will include Vrazels Polka Band, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six, and Harry Czarnek and the Dutchmen, with the Bobby Flores Band performing for the evening. Booths are available to lodges and groups to raise funds with food and/or merchandise. There is limited space available, so please contact Sandi Wicker, Executive Director of the Czech Heritage Museum, (254) 899-2935; or the SPJST Home Office (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578 as soon as possible. District FAC Meeting The District FAC meeting will be held in Temple on October 27 for the District FAC representing your district. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. There are many items on the agenda to be discussed which would benefit all local lodges. If any of you have any special topics that you would like to see on the agenda, please contact your District FAC. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 marks the start of the 2007-2008 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the SPJST Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31, 2008. Make a Difference Day Saturday, October 27 Make a Difference Day was created by USA Weekend Magazine and is

7

an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday in October. Anyone can participate—from the young to the young-at-heart. This year, that date falls on October 27. SPJST is proud of its fraternal calling and encourages lodges to get involved in your community in this nationally recognized event. The Make a Difference Day website (www.usaweekend.com/diffday) will enable you to register your project and provide you with more complete information on Make a Difference Day, including projects from past years. If you have any questions or want to talk over an idea, please give me a call. Deer Antler Contest This contest is for SPJST members, and only Texas white tail deer entries are eligible. This popular contest will begin November 1 and run through January 31, 2008. The rules and categories will be the same as last year. Again, this year, there will be two categories: free-range deer and high fenced deer. Free range is self-explanatory—it means deer which have free range to travel without any restrictions. High fenced deer is one that has been raised primarily in an enclosure. High fenced deer are usually raised in an area enclosed by an eight-foot fence (or higher) and come in a variety of acreage sizes. An entry form and rules are available from Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at the Home Office. Keep up the Good Work Keep up the good work each of you have been doing in promoting SPJST, fraternalism, and your lodge. Be thinking, too, at this time, who your lodge will be selecting as its Fraternalist of the Year for 2007. The honor is meant to recognize an individual for fraternal efforts contributed during the current calendar year. In turn, your lodge’s honoree will receive recognition at the SPJST Awards Banquet in February. If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact me (210) 4133053 or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (254) 773-1575 or 800-727-7578. Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day Scenes Tuesday, September 18, 2007 • Lodge 84, Dallas Another joyful Fellowship Day was held at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas on September 18, 2007. Lillie and I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come and join in on the fun. We certainly enjoyed seeing everyone having such a wonderful time. We were pleased to have our accordion players, Adolph Provazek and Laddie Gajdica, there to play for us. The music was great! Hope to see you both again next month. In addition to enjoying accordion music, this was a day of relaxing, playing games, socializing, and sitting down and savoring an outstanding meal. Thanks to everyone who brought a covered dish, helped serve lunch, and helped clean up at the end of the day. We really appreciate all your help.

As I mentioned in my last letter which was published in the September 12 Vestnik, everyone knew to be on the lookout for the “X that marked the spot.” Today, the X was hidden on the bottom of a drinking cup. You should have seen all the cups going up in the air so everyone could check the bottom. It looked like we were making a toast! Congratulations to Carolyn Nemec who was the lucky door prize winner. We will have another secret door prize next month. Where will the “x” be hidden? Come to the next Fellowship Day to be held on October 16 and see if you will be the next winner! It’s hard to believe that next month we will have celebrated two years of successful Fellowship Days at Lodge 84, Dallas. Thanks again to all of you who have made an effort during the

last two years to join us and/or volunteered in our day of fun, food and fellowship! Next Fellowship Day—October 16 Our next Fellowship Day will be held Tuesday October 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas, located at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas, Texas 75204. Please note we will not have Fellowship Day in November or December due to the holidays. So, please come and bring your family and friends to the last Fellowship Day to be held in 2007. See you Tuesday, October 16 for a fun afternoon! Fraternally, Martha Mahdak Frnka Lillie Maxcy Jones —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on September 13, 2007. President Sadie Kubin along with Bessie Laznovsky, Eleanora Pelzel, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy M. Kudrna, and myself arrived at 8 a.m., had the quilt stretched, and were quilting by 8:30 a.m. We were quilting Eleanora’s quilt—a pretty easy one. Next month, we will quilt for Dorothy J. Kudrna—the last quilt top her sister Evelyn Slovak had made. Quilters, please come. We need you. Pat Fowler came by for a short visit. It was good to see her, and we hope she continues to get better every day. We miss you, Pat. Dorothy Prachyl and Vlasta Laznovsky came soon after we got started, and all the others trickled in. I had to leave around 10 a.m. I promised a dear friend Millie Haltmar that I would take her to the doctor, but I did return to the quilting. I missed part of the meeting so I hope I get everything correct. I am sure they had a delicious lunch as always. After lunch, President Sadie called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Adell Shebesta, sister of Geraldine Zhanel. We had 10 members present and two guests—Dorothy M. Kudrna and Julius Podhrasky. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and gave Treasurer Lil Kosarek’s report in her absence. (Lil Kosarek and Libbie Vrla are on a trip to Germany.) Both reports were approved. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our September birthday

celebrants—Elizabeth Machovsky and Libbie Vrla. As both were absent, we did not sing. Birthday cards were signed for both of them, and a sympathy card was signed for Geraldine Zhanel. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Geraldine for the loss of her sister Adell. I have known both Geraldine and Adell all of my life. I lived next to them when I was growing up. I can remember playing hide-and-seek when our families visited each other. Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you from Anne Zabojnik for her card and money gift that she received from the Circle. We hope Anne is doing well after her hip surgery. Four visitors from the Czech Republic stopped by for a short visit. They were introduced and toured the Sokol Hall and museum. We are always glad to have visitors, especially from the Czech Republic. Vlasta Laznovsky mentioned for everyone to keep in mind our 50th anniversary celebration coming up next year. We need suggestions for the celebration. Bertha Podhrasky passed out the schedule of events for Czech Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas in the African-American Museum on October 7. There is a very good program lined up with many different dancers, Sokol gymnastics, different bands, and the Petr Micka Cimbalom Orchestra from Hodonin, Czech Republic. Everyone should try to attend. It all sounds great! You will have a wonderful day at the State Fair. Bertha also passed out leaflets stating the Dallas Sokol will host a benefit for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) on Sunday, October 14 at the Sokol Hall.

VĚSTNÍK The event starts at 12 noon with the Cloverleaf Brass Band from New Braunfels, Texas, a Czech meal, silent auction, and the Petr Micka Cimbalom Orchestra from Moravia. This event benefits the Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residence in Czech Music and Culture at the College of Music at the University of North Texas. This also sounds like a wonderful afternoon. Everyone should try and attend. I received a letter from Sidney Bridewell from Wisconsin. Remember, she is spending the summer with her daughter and son-inlaw. Dorothy Prachyl read the letter to everyone. She is enjoying herself very much—taking care of the flowers, garden, tomatoes, banana peppers, and different spices. They made a trip to Milwaukee where her grandson attends Marquette University. Her daughter has bought her dining room furniture from the Amish people who are very interesting people. They make furniture without electricity, gas, or propane. Yet, their factory recently burned. They were saddened by that. They only get three television stations so Sidney has been reading. She is on her eighth book. She feels well and has a nice tan. You are missed. Enjoy yourself, and see you in the fall. Thanks for the letter. I brought Lil Kosarek’s door prize. It was won by Dorothy J. Kudrna. She seemed very pleased with it. We had the little gift exchange which is always fun. President Sadie announced our next meeting will be October 11. She then adjourned the meeting. Bertha Podhrasky brought a beautiful bouquet of flowers for our main table. When leaving, she asked if I wanted it. Of course, I said yes. The bouquet is still pretty today—a week later. I hope it lasts another week. Dorothy J. Kudrna just returned from a week’s trip to New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Boston with her son Gary, his wife Paula and Paula’s mom Miriam Craig. The Craigs lived in New Hampshire and Augusta, Maine, and Paula went to college in New Hampshire. They had a wonderful time. I must tell you that Dorothy has a very nice and smart son—Gary and his wife Paula. Both of them have been featured in a magazine called, “Ennis Now.” The articles were so good that I read them several times. I know Dorothy must be so proud of Gary. He is the father of grandson Chaz who left for Okinawa last month. I have not talked about my grandchildren Tanner and Calleigh lately

so here I go. They both like school. Tanner is in the fifth grade, and Calleigh is a high school freshman. I can hardly believe that. Tanner is playing fall baseball—not with the school. Calleigh is running cross country, and she does better each race. When that is over, she will start basketball. We enjoy them so much. I want to say hello to my friends Wilma and Frankie Vrla. I hope you both are doing okay. Everyone, please remember that October 11, we will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize and little gift exchange. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to quilt. Just come visit. Come see us! Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

State Duchess enjoys Westfest, Kolache Festival

Dear Readers, Being the State Duchess is so cool! I went to Westfest, and I rode on a convertible in the parade. I also got to see the West Czech Dancers, and I loved their dresses. Then, the next weekend, I went to the Kolache Festival, which I go to every year because I live in Caldwell. I had fun and ate a lot of kolaches. District Two plans October 20 Six Flags trip The District Two trip to Six Flags is Saturday, October 20, 2007. I hope all of you are planning to attend. The cost is $23 for members and $35 for non-members, paid in advance. This includes the bus fare. Due to construction and no lighted parking area at the SPJST Home Office, the buses will leave from SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall at 7 a.m. promptly! We will not have access to the buses during the day at Six Flags due to the increased charge of having a bus on sight. You are welcome to bring coolers for the ride up there and

back. If there is enough interest, we can have one bus depart Six Flags early, about 7 p.m. I must know beforehand to arrange this with the bus line. If you are absolutely sure you will want to leave early, contact me. Changes cannot be made once the trip/bus assignments are set. I must have all money before October 15. Please pay before the day of the trip. I do not want to take that much cash with me to Six Flags. Call your youth leader as soon as possible. All friends are welcome. Let’s fill three buses and make this the best trip ever! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: swimming at Betty’s house

Lodge 47, Seaton youth: busy September

Dear SPJST Friends, We went to Betty’s house for our September youth club meeting. Betty had a huge water inflatable slide. Haley, Hannah, Misty, and I went down the slide together. Haley and I are the best of friends. The boys kept on spraying us with water guns in the swimming pool. We went to the St. John’s Bazaar. It was very, very fun. I won a bunch of prizes. I saw a helicopter land at the bazaar. We got to look at it and sit in it. It was cool to look at, but the temperature outside wasn’t cool though. I also got a Hello Kitty painted on my face. My second grade teacher is Mrs. Clark. She is very nice. She loves Snoopy, Woodstock, and Charlie Brown. She wears gorgeous clothes. I can’t wait until the Texas State Fair to eat a corny dog. Yummy! Till next time. April Dvorak, age 7 —SPJST—

5 Ways to Celebrate Halloween Without Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating and Halloween go together, well, like witches and black cats. For years, it has been a custom to haunt the neighborhood dressed in costume and coax the residents into filling bags full of treats or tricks. However, trick-or-treating has always posed a set of real dangers, beyond spooky, costumed creatures. Parading around at night (Halloween conveniently falls around the start of daylight savings time for this part of the world) makes it difficult for pedestrians and drivers to see trick-or-treaters. Plus, this day of joy and controlled chaos for children can be the ideal time for a child predator to attempt something dangerous. Sad, but true. That’s why many choose to skip the trick-or-treating and look for safer - yet equally fun - activities instead. Here are some spooktacular alternatives:

1. Haunted gathering: A chaperoned, organized Halloween party is as good as scouring the neighborhood for treats, with a lot less mileage. If guests still want a feel of hunting for treats, organize a scavenger hunt around the house with clues pointing to hidden candy treats or ghastly tricks. You can even make your event a themed Halloween party (where everyone is required to dress in a particular way: pirates, jungle, Hawaiian, etc.), and everyone votes on the best costume. 2. The shopping circuit: Many towns and individual retailers organize trickor-treating jaunts in area malls or shopping plazas. This way children can visit reputable stores in a safe manner and come home with candy, coupons, and more.

3. Spooky sleepout: The crisp, autumn weather can be the ideal time to sleep under the stars. Invite a small gathering of brave friends to stake out their spots in the backyard. Scary ghost stories, s’mores and “truth or dare” type activities are a must on All Hallows Eve. 4. Treat-tasting event: What baking cookies does for Christmas, treat-tasting can do for Halloween. Invite a group of friends over to concoct and sample a host of devilishly delicious dishes. Or, host a Halloween potluck where everyone brings their own favorites. There are plenty of recipes out there, but here's a quick idea: Crush an Oreo® pre-made pie crust to create chocolate crumbs (much easier than separating the cream from the cookies and crushing). Use the crumbs to coat

VĚSTNÍK

frosting on cupcakes or cakes, or to cover pudding. The result looks like dirt and can be used to create smallscale gravesites, earthworm homes and so many other spooky ideas. Plus, it’s the best-looking - and best-tasting - dirt you’ll ever devour. 5. Be charitable: Less-fortunate children in shelters or orphanages also want to experience the fun of Halloween. See if you can organize a scary movie viewing (tailor the scariness factor to the age of the audience), or throw a Halloween bash for them to enjoy. Who knows, you may be able to get a local restaurant or store to donate some food or supplies. Not only will you have fun, you’ll create an enjoyable evening for a lot of others who can use a smile and a treat. —SPJST—

President Wilburn Willis přivítal přítomné, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a uctili památku zemřelých členů a členek.

CCC Houston to present October 10 musical treat The Czech Center Museum Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto, Houston, Texas 77004, is proud to present in concert on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, the melodic, lovely, haunting, joyous, melancholic Moravian/ Gypsy style musical concert by the Micka orchestra from Czech Republic, South Moravia— The South Moravian Cimbal Orchestra. The Cimbal, as it is known in the Czech/Slovak lands, is a hammered dulcimer used primarily in the music of Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Greece and Iran, but the instrument by various names was

The instrument is played with two beaters striking against 109 or more strings. It entered Europe in the Middle Ages. It is generally accompanied by stringed instruments.

Yes, you have heard it before in the movies: The Black Stallion, The Ipcress File, The Persuaders, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers, In the

Wallachian to fellow countrymen in Texas, and fellow countrymen in Texas to our city: Last year (2006), it’s been 150 years since the first citizens of Frenštát p.R. moved out to Texas, USA and surroundings. Within the frame of this important anniversary, not only for our countrymen but also for whole Wallachia and the whole Czech Republic, Wallachian ensemble Radhoš,ť from Trojanovice, and the dulcimer band, Radegast, travelled to Texas, as they had been invited by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. There were 12 dancers: Petr Adámek, Jiřina Batečková, Alena Genzerová, Bohumír Holub, Marta Jalůvková, Jana Juračáková, Eva Káňová, Josef Káňa Sr., Josef Káňa Jr., Vladimír Klimeš, Jana Maritnáková and David Vašek. As for the dulcimer band Radegast, there were: Tomáš Frňka (clarinet and fipple flute), Radomír Golas, Sr. (violin counter), Radomír Golas, Jr. (dulcimer), Bořek Vitásek (first fiddle) and Marek Žingor (contrabass). The city mayors of Frenštát p.R., Pavel Orlík, and of Trojanovice, Drahomír Strnadel, the driver, Jan Mička and his wife took part, too. After the arrival in Houston, we were greeted by members of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, including its president, Jean Blaha Davis and her husband Waymond. Also waiting to meet us was Mr. Gunter Merkl, who loaned us his dulcimer and van and traveled with us during our tour in Texas. After a brief rest, we had our first performance. Then we left to Victoria, where another performance followed. The Czech orchestra played and a member of our tour, Rev. Swienczek, sang with them. In San Antonio we had a great opportunity take a view of that beautiful city from a gazebo. We also visited a museum of 26 ethnical denominations which had settled down in Texas. There was also the Czech exhibit. Then other performances followed: two in Wall, one in West, one in Ennis, one in Caldwell. In Hallettsville, people are used to having so-called Koláčkový festival in September, where we also performed. Then we left to twin-town of Frenštát, La Grange, with its 4500 inhabitants, where there is a center of Czech inheritance and the culture of Texas – and that is where Pavel Strnadel deliver visitors book of Czech history to the delegate of La Grange. Other perfomances followed in College Station and Austin – right in the State of Texas Capitol Rotunda, which is the seat of the governor, the Senate and the Parliament of Texas. During our performance, a letter from the governor to our ensemble was read (with telecasting, too). Then our performance in Elgin followed where some of our performers met their relatives who had ancestors who had lived in Frenštát before (and now live in Texas). Then our performance in Flatonia, Fort Bend, and Needville followed. We had rest days in Corpus Christi by Mexican Bay where we visited ship called USS Lexington, the Sea Aquarium, and the Space Center of NASA

in Houston. Texas has 20 million inhabitants and one million are made up of Czech ancestry. Those who saw our performance were excited. They even didn’t waver to come from a distance. So we managed to draw close to the fellow countrymen. The Wallachian ensemble travelled through one third of Texas, their line was about 4000 km and showed 17 performaces in 15 cities. We had to move from various places to others in quite a short time. The fellow countrymen greeted us with Jak se máš? (how are you?), and they even fasten this greeting on their cars so that we could recognize them. Not only was our audience excited, but even we were. We loved children who behaved so spontaneous when we played some of our Wallachian games. It was really nice to meet Mr. Michalík and Mr. Konvička, whose households we were allowed to visit, too. All that was thanks to the financial support of sponsors from Frenštát p.R., Department of Foreign Business and Department of Culture of the Czech Republic. We received a letter when we got home from the Czech Heritage Society of Texas: “We would like to thank all memebers of Radhošť for thier taking part in perfomances in Texas. The atmosphere was phenomenal and many people enjoyed it, especially the older ones, who will hardly see the Czech Republic again. Your perfomances in Wall School, Flatonia School and Needville School showed your traditional culture and music to our youth. They obviously enjoyed it, too. We will never forget you. Thank you, thank you, thank you once again for your professionality, your endurance, your passion and that you are what you are. We hope you’ll always keep that, we hope you’ll let us know what you’re preparing that will be even greater. If you wanted to come back to Texas we would be pleased to see you again. Yours sincerely, Jean Blaha Davis.”

Robert Janák, one of the most important Texas historians, claimed that most of those people who moved out to Texas in 19th century (from Moravia) were right from Frenštát. That was one of the reasons Frenštát and Trojanovice organized the exhibition (1992) Tam za mořem je Amerika — it was the 500th anniversary of discovering America. June, 16, 2007, our museum was opened within the frame of celebration of 625th anniversary of establishing our city. In the museum, there is the exhibition Tam za mořem with presentation of emigrants list. In 2004, I was asked to locate a cotton wagon, which was really necessary in emigrants’ lives as well as in ranchers’ lives, especially for harvesting cotton. However, due to the lack of finances in 2004, we didn’t manage to buy it. Then we got some money from European Union resources, and

27

so we could purchase it. Darwin Machu managed to locate a wagon in Fredericksburg, Texas, and had it delivered to the customs broker in Austin on October 3, where it was stored and then loaded into a container, along with about 100 donated items, for shipment to Frenstat. Thanks to the interest of Mr. Darwin Lee Machu and his wife, Nancy, people in Texas became interested in donating some items to the museum. Mr. and Mrs. Machu solicited donations from fellow countrymen, through newspapers and magazines like Našinec, SPJST Věstník, České Stopy, and Český Hlas. Bennie and John Stansy, Bill Hodon (photodocumentary) helped them a lot. Some items were donated through the Texas Czech Geneological Society headed by Charlene Hurta, President. These are some of the providers for the museum: Edwin Hlavaty, from Caldwell who donated about 40 items; Nancy and Darwin Machu of Round Rock, who donated approximately 40 items; Georgie and Willie Rainosek from San Antonio, who donated four items; Carol Kitchen from Austin; Arthur Kocurek from Houston; John Hejl from Caldwell; Roger Mechura from Houston; Caroll Warschak from Waco; Leroy and Laverne Bacak from El Campo; Aline Barta from Weimar; Florian Kana from La Grange; Patsy Fuller Robertson from Sheridan; Travis/Williamson County Czech Heritage Society (whose chair is Vlasta Vitek from Austin); Irene Polansky from Fayetteville; Frank and Clair Svrcek from Houston; Annie Cream Michalsky from Crosby; Joe Vrabel from Granger; Katherine Morris from Temple; Charlene and Leroy Hurta from Angleton. Jean and Waymon Davis from Dime Box and Vlasta Korenek also donated items. Finally, about 100 items were gathered and transported to Darwin and Nancy’s home where they were inventoried and photographed and prepared for transporting to Houston in a container. I was at the Machu home while the preparations were made for shipping. Then the container was transported to Houston and loaded into an oceangoing vessel which was shipped on October 12, 2006, just when our ensemble Radhošť was getting ready to fly back to the Czech Republic. In closing, I wish to thank everyone who participated in the successful opening of the museum in Frenstat by donating so many interesting farm items, documents and other memorabilia for display. I especially wish to thank the organizers, too — Nancy and Darwin Lee Machu, Bennie and Johny Stansy and Bill Hodon for their hard work in procuring donations, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society, and all those who are responsible for opening Frenštát’s exhibition Tam za mořem.
