Blake Heap Drums at Lodge 29, Taylor
Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club member Blake Heap joins the Czech Melody Masters for a session playing the drums during a Friday night dance at the Taylor SPJST Hall. Blake also sits in on sessions with other bands on Friday nights. Paul Schlesinger of the Texas Pioneers let Blake play the drums when the band played both of his greatgrandpa’s famous songs. Blake is the great-grandson of the late Jimmy Heap, who had “Wild Side of Life” and “Release Me” as his signature songs. —Submitted by Cristy Girod, Youth Leader

The SPJST congratulates
Brother Jerry Kubala, a member of Lodge 81, Needville, who celebrated his 96th birthday on September 11, 2007. Brother Kubala is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Jerry L. Kubala was born September 11, 1911, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to parents Rozalie and Frank Kubala, both from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The couple was also blessed with children Lassie (Jackson), Alice (Sindel), and Walter, who are all deceased; and Ernest who resides in Rosenberg.
He married his wife Frances (Wasicek) in 1935 in Houston. At the time of Jerry and Frances’ 1935 marriage, the couple resided in Houston where Jerry was working for Houston Lighting and Power. Their daughter Jere Nell was born in Houston in 1940. When Jere Nell was six months old, Jerry went to work for Gravity Meter Exploration Co. which was headquartered in Houston. During the next 10 years, they traveled to many states surveying for oil. The family has always had many fond memories of sights seen, good friends made, and many good times enjoyed.
Upon retirement from Gravity Meter Exploration in 1949, the family moved to Rosenberg, built a home and immediately became “on site” landlords for the small house and garage apartment they had built during the 1930s and the duplex apartment in their new home. Many people still living in the Rosenberg area have such fond memories of Jerry and Frances as they became surrogate parents to many young renters. Along with maintaining three apartments, always with Frances’ help, Jerry became a fireman on the Port of Houston fireboat, The Captain Crotty, where he

Imagine all the benefits
Years ago, researchers surveyed homeowners in an Arizona
neighborhood that didn’t yet have cable television service. One group was told about the benefits of the new service; the other was asked to visualize how it could benefit their lives. A month later, the service became available. The researchers followed up on their study and discovered a 20 percent subscriber rate among the homeowners who were told the benefits of the service. But those who visualized the benefits subscribed at a much higher rate— 47 percent. Other factors, like money, played a role in who subscribed. But it’s hardly surprising that those people who imagined what the service would mean to them personally were more likely to get it. So when you’re mapping out your goals, don’t just think you’ll be successful. Imagine actually achieving that success—how it will feel,
how others will treat you, what you’ll be able to do or say that you couldn’t before—and then live your dreams. —Adapted from Made to Stick Chip Heath and Dan Heath Random House With Sympathy We express our heartfelt sympathy to Assistant to the Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Janie Coakley and her family. Janie’s step-father, Clarence Niekamp, passed away on October 3. In Next Week’s Vestnik Already awaiting the next Vestnik are pictures from the District Seven Fall Fun Day and pictures from the Lodge 271, Laredo organizational meeting—plus a whole lot more. Stay tuned! And, I want to give a special thanks to our Vestnik contributors and readers. I sincerely appreciate you. Thank you for your support and dedication. —SPJST—
Send lodge, district important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar
The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge’s and your district’s important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar. The District Two trip to Six Flags is Saturday, October 20, 2007. I hope all of you are planning to attend. The cost is $23 for members and $35 for non-members, paid in advance. This includes the bus fare. Due to construction and no lighted parking area at the SPJST Home Office, the buses will leave from SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall at 7 a.m. promptly! We will not have access to the buses during the day at Six Flags due to the increased charge of having a bus on sight. You are welcome to bring coolers for the ride up there and back. If there is enough interest, we can have one bus depart Six Flags early,
about 7 p.m. I must know beforehand to arrange this with the bus line. If you are absolutely sure you will want to leave early, contact me. Changes cannot be made once the trip/bus assignments are set. I must have all money before October 15. Please pay before the day of the trip. I do not want to take that much cash with me to Six Flags. Call your youth leader as soon as possible. All friends are welcome. Let’s fill three buses and make this the best trip ever! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Visitors present were Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, State Youth Director John Hoelscher, and Fraternal Department Assistant Douglas Galler. Second Vice President Sister Ann Pustejovsky read the names of the departed members of the district while the youth presented memorial crosses. Then, a candle was lit and a moment of silence was observed in honor of the students killed at Virginia Tech University. District Youth Counselor Sister Bessie Petr thanked all the youth for participating in the memorial. She also thanked Sisters Diana Engelke and Lynda Novak for preparing things for the memorial. Sister Weeks then dismissed the youth members for them to hold their meeting in a different area. The adult meeting continued with Sister Pustejovsky reading the names of the 50- and 75-year members, the Age 96 members, and the Fraternalist of the Year nominees. Sister Weeks announced the names of the appointed persons on the following committees: Auditing Committee Betty Macalik of Lodge 25, Ennis Al Kercho of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Michael Galler of Lodge 66, Waco Nominating Committee Helen Kubala of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Peggy Dobecka of Lodge 6, Cottonwood Debbie Galler of Lodge 66, Waco Contest judges’ names have been misplaced. Sister Weeks turned the meeting over to Secretary Sister Mary Karlik for reading of the minutes and correspondence. Sister Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth made a motion to accept the minutes as pub-
lished in the Vestnik, seconded by Brother Jerry Milan from Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Motion passed. There was no correspondence received. The meeting was then turned over to Treasurer Sister Pam Durham for her report. Sister Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as presented, seconded by Sister Wanda Petr of Lodge 84, Dallas. The motion passed. Sister Weeks then asked for any Committee Reports. They were: By-Laws by Brother Al Kercho— He has not heard anything regarding the by-laws at this time. We are getting closer to the convention in 2008. Things will change probably by the next District Three meeting. If you have anything you need to contact him about regarding the by-laws, you can find his contact information on the second page of the Vestnik. Finance by Brother Michael Galler—The committee has not met yet. The meeting is set for May 5, 2007. If you have any information that you would like to get to the finance committee for the convention, please contact him. His contact information is also on the second page of the Vestnik. Insurance by Brother Daniel Roznovsky—The committee had a two-hour teleconference call on March 10, 2007. One item discussed was E&O (errors and omissions) insurance coverage. Now all the agents have E&O coverage. The agents have access to all their certificates on the computer. They are now able to look up information regarding the certificates they sell. There is a new group term insurance coming out this year. This will be available for any business that is interesting in purchasing coverage for their employees. Brother Phillip McBee added that SPJST had a great year last year with $30 million. Success comes from everyone and a lot of hard work. Big things are coming to bring in new members. Education and Nature Center by Brother John Engelke—The committee is working with the Williamson County Core of Engineers at Lake Grange to got lease on some acreage. They are working well together to get this going. They have obtained a 25 to 50 year lease at no charge. They

will accept any money to be used to get facilities built. Library, Archives and Museum by Brother Jerry Milan—Brother Milan thanked the district and all the lodges for their donations to the Challenge Grant. Once the LAM raises $400,000, an additional $200,000 will be donated. They have close to $300,000 and need an additional $100,000 to reach the challenge. Help from any lodge or member will be greatly appreciated. They need the funds to help remodel and move into the new LAM facility. The LAM has hired a lady, Sandy Wicker, as its administrator. She is there every day and is doing a great job. Another fund-raiser they are holding is a golf tournament to be held on April 28. Everyone is invited to participate. Flyers with details are available from Brother Milan. FAC by Brother George Pauling— He reminded lodges that mid-year reports are due by July 13. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home by Brother George Pauling—Two of the homes are doing well since the first of January. The Taylor home is rebuilding to improve the building and will have 92 beds available. At this time, they only have 72 beds. Sister Weeks turned the meeting over to Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride for a report from the Home Office. He presented the district with a check as allocated by Article 44J of the by-laws for $750 to be used for hosting district meetings and the balance used to defray the costs of the district (total $3,500). He presented a check in the amount of $750 as allocated by Article 44A of the by-laws to Sister Bessie Petr to defray the cost of the hosting lodge for District Three Youth Achievement Day. He thanked Brother McBee for making a good report on insurance for 2006 and Brother Jerry Kucera for still selling insurance even though he has retired. Then, he thanked the lodges for the great things they are doing, but most of all everyone for their part in supporting SPJST. District Three’s growth is very active, and we are looking to make $7.63 million in 2008. The meeting was then turned over to District Director Brother Johnnie Krizan who welcomed everyone and thanked all for giving up their time to attend the meeting. A new lodge has been chartered as Lodge 267, DFW making 24 chartered lodges in District Three. SPJST had a good year in 2006. In 2001, it was a turnaround year with net gain for membership the first time in 15 years. The
VĚSTNÍK goal is to increase this growth by at least 5 percent each year. The meeting was recessed for lunch. Members were asked to stand for the blessing by Raychel Clark, District Three and State Queen. The meeting was reconvened by Sister Weeks with Brother Krizan continuing his report. The Supreme Lodge has discontinued premium refunds as of January, 2007. Research showed that this was not cost effective. Renovation to the Home Office continues and construction is estimated to be completed the first of 2008. Percentage rates on UL and annuities are still competitive with the national levels. Mortgage money is still available, and loans are available to certificateholders. Rates are published in the Vestnik. This year, there were 60 scholarships awarded to youth members. There are two types of awards— Leadership Grants and General Scholarships. District Three youth receiving Leadership Grants are Tracy Dobecka of Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Whitney Dobecka of Lodge 6, Cottonwood; Bryant Hunter of Lodge 25, Ennis; and Jerrod Ryan of Lodge 25, Ennis. Treasurer Sister Pam Durham presented checks to Lodge 84, Dallas for hosting the meeting and for meals. There were 124 in attendance. There were 450 canned goods donated by members that will be donated to the Brady Center. A motion was made for the district to donate $1,500 to the LAM. The motion passed. Age 96 Member Continued from Page 1. and his brother Ernest had a small home remodeling business. Jerry loves to talk about all the places he and Frances lived during their GMX traveling days. There were so many places, and he remembers all of them! He also has many hunting and fishing stories. Jerry was a boy who grew up with little, became a man who acquired more than he could have ever imagined by working hard every day, always being content, and never wanting more than he had. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to any friend or relative in need. A special accomplishment, especially in this day and time, was the longevity of his marriage—almost 70 years. In both 1995 and 2001, large celebrations were held to honor Jerry and Frances on their anniversary. Frances passed away in 2005. Jerry has always been an avid

During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, he farmed 10 acres of cotton because he loved doing it. He and Frances always had a large garden—enough produce to feed themselves, their family and friends. And, he always had roses in his yard which he loved to cut and take to Frances. Mary Ann Kozel is recovering from surgery, and a get well card was sent to Noma Spaulding. Thanks goes to Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak on developing a very nice brochure on our lodge. We have a great facility to host your large wedding, anniversary, and other parties. Since our meeting, we held a very successful Czech Heritage Day. It was great to welcome so many of you to our lodge. The meal preparation crew worked hard in advance of the event as well as on the day of the event. It is greatly appreciated. SPJST Youth Section
State Youth Director: DYC meeting Nov. 10 in Seabrook
Dear Youth Leaders, Welcome to October! It’s Czech Heritage Month and a great time to learn more about the cultural heritage of our SPJST founders. It’s also a time of celebration as many Texas cities and towns host Czech festivals and observances this time of year. Speaking of Czech heritage, the 2007-2008 State Royalty Court made its first public appearance at Westfest in West, Texas, on September 1. Westfest is a Czech polka festival held each Labor Day weekend in the Central Texas town of West, located approximately 15 miles north of Waco and 75 miles south of Dallas on I-35. SPJST Royalty Court members rode in the parade and also made an appearance in the cultural amphitheater. In addition to showcasing Czechoslovakian dancing and costumes, the cultural amphitheater also featured Norwegian, Mexican, Scandinavian, Dutch, and other dancers. Members of the Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club; Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club; and Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club also participated in the parade. The following week, the State Royalty travelled to Caldwell, Texas, for the annual Caldwell Kolache Festival. SPJST was well represented that day. As part of making the rounds, the Royalty helped out with the Kolache Eating Contest that was sponsored by SPJST. SPJST beseda dancers representing Lodge 9, Snook and Lodge 17, New Tabor performed. Rhythm ‘07 Membership Drive Only three months to go in this year’s 2007 membership drive. There’s still time for youth club members to make new member referrals and have them count towards your club’s 2007 youth application quota!
The deadline for all Vestnik items is 5 p.m. the Wednesday before the publication date. Send your news and photos directly to: SPJST Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny P.O. Box 100 • Temple, Texas 76503 Fax: (254) 774-7447 Email: melaniez@vvm.com Questions? Call (800) 727-7578
Texas Fraternal Congress Youth Contests Deadline Reminder Thanks to those of you who are promoting the Texas Fraternal Congress essay, photography, and art contests that were included in the September youth leader packets. By the time you receive this letter, the deadline will have passed for me to accept any more entries. I wish everyone who did enter luck and thank you for representing SPJST. In the next letter I will have the results of the TFC Contests.
Youth clubs and youth leaders who meet their club goals are also in line to receive some nice cash incentives. A listing showing where your youth club stands in reaching its youth club goal for the Rhythm ‘07 Membership Drive appeared in the September 26 Vestnik. Please remember that two things need to happen in order for any incentives to be awarded: First, the youth program goal of 700 youth applications written has to be met; and second, 2,625 applications have to be written statewide into the SPJST. The good news is that we have already made the statewide goal! Also, please know that for each application that a youth club member recommends that is written, the youth club member receives a chance to win a MacBook Computer and Printer valued at $1,200. If you have any questions regarding the incentive programs, please refer to your Rhythm ‘07 Membership Campaign guide that is located in the back of your youth handbook.
Your Old Eyeglasses Are Appreciated Please keep those old eyeglasses and hearing aid donations coming in. This remains an ongoing effort. Thanks to your efforts, SPJST has been able to help many people through this program. The eyeglasses and hearing aids that we collect are processed by the Houston Eyeglass Center and the University of Houston. The reconditioned eyewear is distributed throughout the United States and the world, and the cell phones are given to various care shelters throughout the country. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Kicks Off October 1 The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive began October 1. All youth club members who donate $2 or more will receive 20 merit points. Youth club members who donate $5 or more will receive 20 merit points and a certificate acknowledging their gift.
Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Honors Grandparents
SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club hosted a grandparents social on September 9, 2007. Fourteen grandparents were present. The youth entertained the attendees with their YAD talent performances and presented their grandparents with a gift and a rose. All enjoyed refreshments of cake, dip, chips, and punch.

Make a Difference Day is October 27 Looking for an opportunity for your youth club to make a difference? Then take a look at Make a Difference Day. Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others — a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. The next event is Saturday, October 27. Who can participate? Anyone! Young and old, individuals and groups can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. For detailed information or to register your event to be considered for national recognition, please refer to the information included with this mailing or refer to the Make a Difference Day website at http://usaweekend.com/diffday/index. html. Christmas Ornament Contest As of this writing, three districts have held their Christmas Ornament Contests, and I like what I’ve been seeing! If your district’s fall meeting is still pending, please encourage the youngsters in your youth club to attend and participate in the contest. Remember that any ornaments entered cannot include food items because they cannot be stored or reused on the tree the following year. Christmas Ornament Contest rules appear on page 38 of the current SPJST Youth Club handbook. Upcoming district meeting dates are as follows: District One—Sunday, October 14 Lodge 9, Snook District Three—Sunday, October 28 Lodge 154, Fort Worth District Four—TBA District Six—Sunday, October 14 Hosted by Lodge 240, Bay City Around The State I have had the pleasure in recent weeks of traveling with and getting to know our 2007-2008 State Royalty Court and their families. I am very proud of these young fraternalists and am impressed by their willingness to promote the SPJST. Their first public appearance was at the Westfest parade in West, Texas. Thanks to Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and her husband David Nauert for loaning their Corvettes in the parade. Thanks, too, to the wonderful people who work with the Westfest, who once again

coordinated the cultural entertainment program at Westfest and invited us to once again participate in the program. What a production! The next official appearance of the Royalty Court will be October 6 in Austin at the Texas Fraternal Congress. Their job at the Texas Fraternal Congress will be to deliver a short speech and promote SPJST. Czech Feszt in Temple Please mark your calendar to be in Temple on Saturday, November 3. The City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly the SPJST Library, Archives and
VĚSTNÍK Museum) are hosting a celebration of Czech heritage and culture on this date in the Santa Fe Gardens in downtown Temple from 10 a.m. to midnight. Many events and entertainment are being planned throughout the day. Please watch the Vestnik for a schedule of events as more are scheduled each week. Royal Dancing at the Kolache Festival B y 2007 - 2008 SPJST State King Colby Havemann Well, we sure did not have to travel far for our second royalty appearance because it was in Caldwell—our hometown—at the Kolache Festival on September 8, 2007. We danced the beseda. Then, we were introduced at the festival. I found out that we are the first royalty court to all be beseda dancers, and I thought that was really neat. I also helped with the Kolache Eating Contest. That was

District Two plans October 20 Six Flags trip The District Two trip to Six Flags is Saturday, October 20, 2007. If there is enough interest, we can have one bus depart Six Flags early, about 7 p.m.

I had a great time. When we got there, I had a chocolate covered donut. I had a cupcake after lunch. It was really good. I liked family fun day. Fraternally, Leah McDonald, age 7 —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy
We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, BETTY KRENEK. On Sunday, August 12, 2007, at the age of 78, the Lord welcomed Betty Sophie Janik Krenek into heaven. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 14 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford, and interment services were held at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Krenek was born on March 26, 1929, in Jourdanton. She graduated from East Bernard High School in May, 1947. On September 15, 1947, she married Joe A. Krenek, Jr. and lovingly reared four children. She will be deeply missed by her family: daughter Bonnie Kocian and husband James of Damon; sons Ronald Joe Krenek and wife Susan of Wharton and Donald Krenek of Sugarland; granddaughters Betty Jo Krenek and Holly Krenek, both of Austin; grandson Jason Kocian and wife Kati of Needville; sister Willie Mae Rieger of Wharton; brothers Charley Janik of Wallis, Bennie Janik, Edwin Janik, and Leroy Janik, all of East Bernard. Mrs. Krenek was preceded in death by her husband Joe; son Lonnie; parents Emil and Sophie; and brother Louis. She was a faithful and active member of St. John’s Catholic Church. For many years, she owned Krenek’s Bridal Shop where she showed her talent in weddings she coordinated and decorated. She took great care in designing her floral arrangements. But it was her three grandchildren that kept her spirits alive after the deaths of her husband and son. Betty Jo, Holly, and Jason were only six years old then. As they grew up, she was so very proud of their accomplishments. She always ended a phone call or visit with these special words: “Granny loves you.” Even after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in November, 2001, she was never heard to complain. But for the next six years, it was one illness or surgery after another until she couldn’t bear anymore pain.
She had many special friends who kept in contact with her daily by phone or visits. All of this was special time with her. Pallbearers were Jason Kocian, Sean Hollis, Dale Janik, Gene Hubenak, Michael Hubenak, Allen Ray Rachunek, and Bobby Rieger. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Mark Marconi, Dr. Henry Lopez, nieces, nephews, and friends. If desiring, memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society. May our departed sister rest in peace. Resolution Committee Helen Kelner, Secretary —SPJST—

started Saturday, October 6 at UNT. “As we continue to emphasize the importance of international participation in the world of music through exchanges and special projects, it is very gratifying to learn that the film crew from Czech National Television wishes to come here and film the cimbalom orchestra performing and interacting in Texas,” said Dr. James Scott, dean of the UNT College of Music. “It demonstrates that these partnerships and cultural sharing are important to everyone in every part of the world.” The orchestra arrived on the UNT campus on Friday, October 5, and its first performance was scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, October 6 in Winspear Hall of the Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT campus. Tickets are $7 for the general public with some discounts available. The UNT performance included a reception with jazz music provided by a student quartet. Three of the quartet members are former or current music students involved in an exchange with the Janacek Academy of Music and the Performing Arts, in Brno, Czech Republic, with whom UNT has a formal exchange agreement. “The UNT College of Music has had a very long relationship with the Janacek Academy,” said Dr. Thomas Sovik, professor of music and director of Central European Studies and Exchanges. “CEFT recognized the fact that the College of Music is the No. 1 music school in the country, and — as the organization was looking for another major project to fund — I think that UNT must have seemed a logical choice. We had a successful
UNT-Czech music program that had been in business since 1990.” Sovik initiated the studentexchange program between UNT and the Janacek Academy of Music and the Performing Arts in Brno, Czech Republic, in 1990. The program was established as an official exchange program in 1993. To date, UNT has sent six students to study at the Janacek Academy, and the academy has sent six students to UNT. “Just this past summer, as an outgrowth of our university-level exchange program with the Janacek Academy, we hosted our first student from a Czech high school,” Sovik said. “We hope that this can blossom into an active student-exchange program between the Denton ISD and the high school in the Czech village of Ivancice.” Sovik has led 26 short-term visits to the Czech Republic, providing the opportunity for 876 faculty members and students to perform in 94 recitals and to offer 100 academic presentations. Another tour of students will leave for the Czech Republic in March, 2008, bringing the total number of recitals to 100, with scheduled performances in Prague, Ricany, Brno, Ivancice, and Vienna. The Petr Micka Cimbalom Orchestra consists of Petr and Ales Mička on violin, Martin Drlik on clarinet, Pavel Valíček on cimbalom, František Sup on viola, and David Řičica on bass. The film crew members involved in the project are Břetislav Rychlík, director; Monika Rychlíková, producer; Petr Koblovský, cameraman; and

Heritage and Cultural Center of a grant for financial support for the publication of Nás Ceský Zivot, Our Czech Life, and the TCHCC Annual Calendar. Through its publications of Nás Ceský Zivot, and the annual calendar, TCHCC promotes and preserves the Czech heritage and culture. The calendars are becoming collectors items because of the rare vintage photographs that are submitted and used for each publication. Dr. Nora Jurkovicova of the Cultural Section of the Czech Embassy in Washington forwarded the official documents sent by the Foreign Ministry to TCHCC. Following this announcement, the grant in the amount of $3,284.69 was received from Dr. Zdeněk Lyčka, Director of Cultural Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prague, Czech Republic. Nás Ceský Zivot, a quarterly newsletter, and the TCHCC annual calendar are sent to sustaining members of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Additional copies of the TCHCC calendar may also be purchased. With a different theme each year, the calendar features vintage photos. Themes for the cover in past years have featured churches, halls, schools, homes, children and farm equipment. Family history pages are also very popular. The theme for the TCHCC 2008 calendar covers will be vintage wedding pictures. Czech Cultural Center Houston expresses thanks To Friends, Members, and New Friends of the Czech Center Museum Houston: To all of you who came to enjoy the Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Alliance Festival on Sunday, September 30, 2007—thank you! Thank you! Thank you for participating in this great annual event with the Polish, the Czech, the Croatian, the Ukrainian communities, and yes, this year, we had two great musicians representing the Slovenians. Isn’t that what this great city of Houston is all about—more than 100 distinct international cultures, and these are only five of them! It is why we are called an international city, and it is why we should be interested in who we are, know our individual cultures so that we can appreciate others’ cultures. Language, art, traditions, cuisine, and history, you know, are what define a culture and that’s what was experienced on this Festival Day commencing with a traditional Slavic Mass honoring those two famous Greek brothers—Saints Cyril and Methodius—who answered the call for help from the leader of the pagan Slavs back in the 800s who had no language and no religion. Cyril the scholar initiated the Slavonic language utilizing the Cyrillic Alphabet still used today by the Russian and Ukraine people and Methodius the cleric who sowed the seeds of Christianity. The grand entry of the flag bearing nations was impressive followed by the national anthems of the United States, Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, and the Ukraine. The respective Queens and Princesses were presented; Czech Heritage Singers and Dancers lead off the performances. Next, beautifully dressed school children singing and dancing Polish folk music, the Juravli Ukrainian Dancers choreographed beautiful dance movements, followed by Croatian Dancers and Singers, and Sokol Houston Gymnasts. Ending the event was the Czech Kovanda Dance Orchestra. One could truly imagine they were in the country of origin of these groups in Europe! In the interim, there was much to entertain the eye and a delightful selection of delectable foods for the palate at each booth. The Czech host-
VĚSTNÍK ed this year, and the Czech Center Museum Houston presented an authentic Czech menu derived from the recipes of its famous Klima Family Cookbook for sale in its gift shop. It added to the pleasure knowing the author, Dr. Marcella Klima and husband Dr. Tomas Klima, were partaking as well. This gourmet dinner, not a fund-raiser, but proudly presented to the general community by the Center’s “Best and Only Czech Restaurant for the Day in Houston, Texas.” A magnificent pork loin on varaway with au jus, cream whipped Czech potatoes, red cabbage, loganberries, dill pickle, and yeast roll. It was prepared to perfection by one of
Houston’s fine corporate and social Caterers, City View Catering. The dessert menu included apricot, apricot cream cheese, prune plum, berry, cream cheese, apple, and poppy seed kolaches, traditional apple/cinnamon/nut strudel and a to-die-for cream cheese roll. Pastries were prepared a few hours before serving by Prasek’s Bakery in Hillje, Texas. Every recipe was an original brought from the Czech land of the Prasek’s ancestors, great-grandma, grandma, and aunts. And, so you see, it truly was an occasion not to be missed. We had hundreds of visitors. If you weren’t one of them—hopefully next year!
Once again, thank you. It was great to work with such a professional Alliance Committee. It really does take a village to put it together, to make it happen, to enjoy it. It is a lot of doing. It was neat to hear from members across the country, “You people do some great events. We wish we lived closer.” We wish they did, too. In the meanwhile, you need to book the Petr Micka Cimbalom Orchestra for October 10, 2007, with a reception following. Seating will be limited. Don’t miss this musical treat! Please call Valerie or Nancy (713) 528-2060 or email Valerie czechcenter.org. See you on the 10th in Prague Hall. Effie M. Rosene, Chairman —SPJST—
A Visit to the Czech Lands
Written by Louise Kadlubar Holub • Submitted by Dorothy Weinzel For many years, it has been my wish to visit my birth place and the church where I was baptized, in Hrobice, Czechoslovakia. It has been 53 years since I came to America. I have never been back to the land of my birth until June of this year. It was a wonderful opportunity and a dream come true. On June 9th, at five o’clock in the morning, 58 of us left Houston in an American plane which took us to New York. There, a Holland plane was waiting to take us across the Atlantic. The flight was at night, which was lucky for us, as being asleep kept us from being afraid. However, I am sure that St. Christopher, to whom I prayed, helped our flight across. Also, the prayers and masses of friends and relatives placed us in the Hands of God, whose guardian angel was always with us. At the first sign of daylight, we could see land, and the fields and trees looked like carpets. The houses scattered along the roads looked like tiny doll houses. The Dutch Airliner landed in Amsterdam where the people welcomed us. We were served dinner in an indoor dining room which was beautifully decorated with tulips of many colors. We wanted to stay, as this part of Holland was a place of interest. The flowers alone were worth seeing. However, the plane was waiting to fly us to our destination. We flew at 17,000 feet which put us above the clouds. It is a strange feeling to look and see the clouds below. After four hours in the air, we landed at Prague, and spent the night at the Hotel Aspland. The next morning, we all went our separate ways. My nearest of kin were cousins; some I had never seen as I left Czechoslovakia in 1904. The town of Gottwaldo, which in my early childhood was called Zlin, is very old but very well kept. The churches there are very beautiful, and the people attend services in large numbers. It seems that in the house of God, the people feel free to express their feelings in prayer and song. The entire congregations sing beautiful Czech hymns, which touched me deeply. Everywhere we went we were recognized as American tourists, and were asked how we got along in our America. I would always answer, “All is well.” I also told them how the Catholic people in America are praying and having Novenas in answer to the plea of Our Lady of Fatima, that we pray for the conversion of Russia. I also visited several shrines in Svati-Kopecek. It was my good fortune to attend the Corpus Christi feast day celebration. The outside altars were beautiful, and the procession of flower girls, a Czech band, and several thousand people was very impressive. Olomouc, a town just below Svati-Kopecek, is also an old, but beautiful city. It is quite large and has 17 Catholic churches. Some are in need of repair, but the interiors are very pretty. One church I visited has the tombs of several martyrs in the entrance vestibule. We also visited Hostyn, attending Mass in the chapel there. We all visited the Holy Water Spring but had to walk 300 steps down to the miraculous water. We all washed our faces at the spring and felt instantly refreshed. Each of us left with a bottle of the water in our possession. None of us felt tired or sore after walking the rocky path up and down hill visiting the 14 stations of the Cross, which are badly in need of repair. I could write much more, but can’t take up too much space in our wonderful little newspaper. My trip is a wonderful memory, my health the entire month was excellent, and I never felt tired. I want to take this opportunity to thank all my sister-members for their prayers for my safe journey. Editor’s Note: This letter was written in the 1950s by Louise Holub. Thanks to Louise’s daughter, Dorothy Weinzel of Lodge 196, Houston-West, for sharing it with Vestnik readers. —SPJST—
