Happy Halloween!

e sure to check out the article in the Lodge Section on page 15 from Lodge 130, Dallas. The lodge recently created a Benevolence Committee to assist charities, lodges, and other volunteer projects. If your lodge is working on an important project and may be needing some additional funds, why not contact John Boylan of the Lodge 130 Benevolence Committee. I applaud Lodge 130, Dallas and its members for creating this committee. They are reaching out to help lodges and community organizations. Now, that’s true fraternalism in action. Way to go, Lodge 130! Fraternalism in Action . . . October was very busy for the SPJST Floats. David and I certainly have enjoyed seeing and visiting with the lodge and youth members from Lodge 1, Fayetteville; Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 217, Alice; and Lodge 240, Bay City.
The parades have been fun—the fellowship even more fun! Thanks to these lodges for their awesome hospitality. Float I is being repaired and transformed into a Christmas float. Float II will be in Danbury on November 11 for the Veterans Day parade. Then, it, too, will go to “David’s Float Hospital” for maintenance and repair followed by decorating it for Christmas! The first Christmas parade is November 17 in Hondo. If your lodge or youth club would like to ride the float in a parade in your area, give me a call to check availability. We still have several dates open. Happy Halloween! When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween. —Author Unknown Best wishes for a wonderful and safe Halloween. May you gets lots of treats. —SPJST—

From the Secretary-Treasurer
Attention, Lodges: new annual electronic notice - e-Postcard (Form 990-N) Below are frequently asked questions about Form 990-N — the new annual electronic notice e-Postcard. Lodge leaders are encouraged to read this information. All SPJST lodges whose gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less will now be required to file an electronic Form 990-N with the IRS annually. The due date will be May 15, 2008. Lodges are asked to forward a copy of what they file to SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; email lanitaa@spjst.com; or fax (254) 774-7447. For more information, please contact the Secretary-Treasurer’s office at the SPJST Home Office. 1. Is there a new filing requirement for small tax-exempt organizations? Beginning in 2008, small taxexempt organizations, who previously were not required to file a return, may be required to file an annual electronic notice, Form 990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not Required To File Form 990 or 990-EZ. This filing requirement applies to tax periods beginning after December 31, 2006. Small tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less are not required to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax. With the enactment of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, these small tax-exempt organizations will now be required to file an electronic Form 990-N with the IRS annually. Exceptions to this requirement include organizations who are included in a group return, private foundations required to file Form 990-PF, and section 509(a)(3) supporting organizations required to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ. In addition, this filing requirement does not apply to churches, their integrated auxiliaries, and conventions or associations of churches. 2. How do I file Form 990-N (ePostcard)? Form 990-N, also known as the ePostcard, must be filed electronically. There will be no paper form. The IRS is developing an electronic filing system for the e-Postcard, and will publicize the filing procedures when the system is completed and ready for use.
3. Will I need to purchase a computer and software to file the ePostcard? The IRS plans to deliver a simple, Internet based process for filing the ePostcard. We anticipate that organizations that do not have access to a computer can go to places such as their local library to file the e-Postcard. Because the system will be Internet based, organizations should not need to purchase software to file the ePostcard. 4. When will the e-Postcard (Form 990-N) be due? How often do I need to file? Beginning in 2008, the e-Postcard will be due every year by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of your tax period. For example, if your tax period ends on December 31, 2007, the e-Postcard is due May 15, 2008. 5. What information do I need to provide on the e-Postcard? The e-Postcard will require you to provide the following information: • Organization’s legal name, • Any other names your organization uses, • Organization’s mailing address, • Organization’s website address (if applicable), • Organization’s employer identification number (EIN), • Name and address of a principal officer of your organization, • Organization’s annual tax period, • A statement that your organization’s annual gross receipts are still normally $25,000 or less, and • If applicable, indicate if your organization is terminating (going out of business). 6. Why do I need to provide this information? The Pension Protection Act of 2006 added this filing requirement to improve transparency within the nonprofit sector. The information will ensure that donors, who may want to contribute to your organization, and the IRS have current information about your organization. 7. Will the IRS notify affected organizations about the filing requirement?
VĚSTNÍK The IRS began mailing educational letters in July to more than 650,000 small tax-exempt organizations that may have to file the e-Postcard. The letters will be mailed over several months, finishing in early December. In addition, we will update our website at www.irs.gov/eo with the latest information on filing the e-Postcard. 8. What should I do if I receive an educational letter, but I am no longer with the organization and I am unable to forward the letter? Call Customer Account Services toll-free at 877-829-5500 and explain the situation. The IRS will update their records to indicate that they were unable to locate the organization. 9. How can I ensure that the IRS has my organization’s correct address? If you believe the IRS may have an incorrect address for your organization you can: • Change your address on Form 990-N, or • File Form 8822, Change of Address, with the IRS. You will need to complete Parts II and III. To get Form 8822, use this link to download the form, or go to the irs.gov home page (www.irs.gov) and click on More Forms and Publications. 10. Does my organization have to file Form 990-N if it is a subordinate organization? If your organization is a subordinate of a parent organization and your organization is included on the parent’s group return, you are not required to file Form 990-N. The group return satisfies your reporting requirement. However, if you do not file as part of a group return and your annual gross receipts are normally $25,000 or less, you must file Form 990-N. SPJST local lodges are not included on the SPJST Home Office’s return, so all SPJST lodges must file. Also, lodges are asked to submit a copy of their return to SPJST Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin. 11. Can I file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead of the e-Postcard (Form 990-N)? If you prefer to file an information return, Form 990 or 990-EZ, you must complete the entire return. An incomplete or partially completed Form 990 or 990-EZ will not satisfy the annual filing requirement.
12. What happens if I fail to file the e-Postcard or Form 990 or 990-EZ? The Pension Protection Act requires the IRS to revoke the taxexempt status of any organization who fails to meet their annual filing requirement for three consecutive years. Therefore, organizations who do not file the e-Postcard or an information return, Form 990 or 990-EZ, for three consecutive years will have their tax-exempt status revoked as of the filing due date of the third year. 13. Can an organization have its tax-exempt status reinstated if it was revoked for failing to file for three consecutive years? You must apply (or reapply) and pay the appropriate user fee to have your tax-exempt status reinstated if it was revoked because you failed to file for three consecutive years. Reinstatement of tax-exempt status may be retroactive if you can show that you had reasonable cause for not filing. To apply for tax-exempt status, use Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption, or Form 1024, Application for Exemption Under Section 501(a). 14. How can I get the latest information about filing the e-Postcard (Form 990-N)? For the latest information about electronically filing the e-Postcard, you can: • Sign up for Exempt Organization’s EO Update, a regular e-mail newsletter that highlights new information posted on the charities pages of irs.gov. To subscribe go to www.irs.gov/eo and click on “EO Newsletter.” • Check our website at www.irs.gov/eo. • Call our customer service function toll-free at 1-877-829-5500. —SPJST—

SPJST, KJZT, KJT present Join Hands Day Excellence Award to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) recognized this year’s 10 JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Award winners at the Celebration of Fraternalism Luncheon held during the 121st NFCA Annual Meeting, September 7, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. SPJST along with Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas, KJZT, and Catholic Union of Texas (KJT) were the proud recipients of one of this year’s Excellence Awards. The three groups combined forces to update the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The 10 awardees were selected from hundreds of volunteer projects that emphasized youth and adult partnerships on May 5, 2007. Each award-winning project received $1,000 and a distinctive glass trophy. The coordinating groups choose how the funds are used. JOIN HANDS DAY, which promotes fraternalism and fraternal benefit societies, is the only day of service on America’s Season of Service national calendar that seeks to build youth and adult relationships through planning and participating in a day of volunteering. This signature event provides fraternal benefit societies with an opportunity to connect with other volunteer organizations to make an important impact on their communities. In selecting Excellence Award recipients, the most important consideration is the quality of the youth and adult partnership in planning and conducting the event. Other criteria include the quality of the project to the community or persons in need, effectiveness of the mobilization group and the potential for relationships to continue after JOIN HANDS DAY. “This is fraternalism’s day, a day when fraternal benefit societies and volunteer organizations reach out to people or communities in need, connect generations and develop relationships that would never happen otherwise,” said Michael Stivoric, Chair of the Join Hands Corporation Board of Directors. “Fraternalists ‘JOIN HANDS’ year-round, because fraternalism is not a one-day-a-year event. However, JOIN HANDS DAY provides all fraternalists and nonfraternalists alike with the opportunity to make a difference in their

communities through helpful projects that connect youths and adults.” Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas is a not-for-profit organization that has only one paid employee. All others are volunteers who donate their time and tools to get the job done. Many times, volunteers also donate materials for the project. The TCHCC’s only source of income is from donations and fund-raisers the Center has during the year. “As with any organization or household, there are always projects that need attention, fixing up or maintenance with never enough volunteers to complete these and keep up with never-ending chores,” Project Coordinator Chester Jenke, SPJST State FAC and Lodge 258, Seguin President, said. “For our combined JOIN HANDS DAY project, the TCHCC board of directors knew what projects needed attention and which ones had priority,” Brother Jenke said. “These members planned the many projects with hopes that our combined volunteer effort would bring in enough volunteers to accomplish many of these projects.” Projects completed included creating flower beds, moving rocks, mowing the grass, cleaning refrigerators, and sweeping and mopping the amphitheater floors. The concession stand was organized, and supplies were inventoried and put away in the
new cabinets. Wood preservative was applied to the ramp, bridge, and the steps of the Pavilion. The back porch of the Kalich House was sanded, and the Pavilion was cleaned. Youth also showed leadership in the development and implementation of the project. “We contacted other organizations and asked them if they would be interested in participating in a JOIN HANDS DAY project,” Brother Jenke added. “All organizations involved in the project were so delighted they were asked to participate, the volunteers—both young and the young-at-heart which included three families of three generations—came out the morning of May 5, 2007, and had a great time working. It was fun with all ages getting together. No one even considered it to be work!” Prior to beginning the work, coffee, kolaches, orange juice, and water were served. While everyone was enjoying refreshments, volunteers were assigned into groups. Then, they began to tackle the assigned projects. The volunteers of the board of directors served a delicious hamburger lunch at noon. All organizations stated are looking forward to doing another project similar to this at next year’s JOIN HANDS DAY—Saturday, May 3, 2008. —SPJST—

Lodge 130, Dallas contributes to SoupMobile At our monthly meeting on October 21, 2007, Benevolence Committee Chairman John Boylan moved to contribute $400 to the SoupMobile in Dallas. The motion was seconded, discussed, and passed by the membership. You are encouraged to please check this very worthwhile and needy charity out at www.soupmobile.org. The contact information is (800) 3755022; SoupMobile Attn: David Timothy, 3017 Commerce Street, Dallas, Texas 75226; email davidtimothy@aol.com.
Mission The SoupMobile is a mobile soup kitchen that serves meals to homeless people in the Dallas area. The SoupMobile is literally on the front lines when it comes to feeding the homeless men and women in our community. In 2006, they fed over 100,000 of the homeless in Dallas and have a Christmas Angel Project where they provide one night stay and dinner to 200 homeless at the Hyatt Regency Dallas and provide clothes as a Christmas gift. Our $400 contribution will feed 400 homeless men, women, and children in Dallas as all it takes is $1 to feed one homeless person through this very worthwhile charity. John and Teresa Boylan already volunteer with the SoupMobile by preparing sandwiches for the homeless. We discussed inviting others to volunteer to help the homeless and for lodge fraternal credit. Please take the time to review this website as you, too, will be impressed at what this true charity does with very low administrative cost. Any contribution actualPlease see Lodge Letters continued on page 18.

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on October 11, 2007. President Sadie Kubin, Bessie Laznovsky, Vlasta Laznovsky, Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy M. Kudrna, Pat Fowler, and myself met at 8 a.m. and were quilting around 8:30 a.m.—the last quilt top for Dorothy J. Kudrna that was pieced by her sister Evelyn Slovak. We were glad to have Pat back helping us quilt. Pat didn’t stay all day as she still gets tired, but we were glad to have her for even a few hours. We were also glad to have Martha Ritchey back. She is a quilter. We have missed her. Remember, she lost her husband recently. Bessie Laznovsky has talked with Geraldine Zhanel. She is doing much better, but she is not driving yet. She was able to attend her granddaughter Bonnie’s wedding in Dallas. We were surprised and happy to see Sidney Bridewell and Linda Waldo. Sidney came home sooner from Wisconsin than she had planned because it was already getting cold. We are glad that you are back, Sidney. We were also glad to see Esther and Bob Cunningham and Libbie Elsik. Esther and Bob were traveling last month, and I will tell about their trips later. Libbie Vrla and Lil Kosarek were back from their trip to Germany. It was good to see everyone.
We quilted, and some visited until noon and had a delicious lunch as always. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to the clean-up crew— Sylvia, Linda, and Libbie. After lunch, President Sadie called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held for Gary Deagen, great-nephew of President Sadie.

She announced our October birthday celebrants—Sadie Kubin, Mildred Trlica, Bertha Podhrasky, and myself. “Happy Birthday” was sung. We hope that Mildred and Bertha had very happy birthdays as they were not present. Dorothy Prachyl read a letter from Melanie Zavodny, Editor of the Věstník, stating that she met Wilda Perry of SPJST Lodge 255, Katy at a meeting in Katy, Texas. Wilda is interested in our Club. Wilda reads our monthly letter and wanted to know if we quilt for just anyone. She would love to start a quilting club in Katy. Melanie enjoyed talking with Wilda and appreciated her interest. As I told Wilda, we only quilt for our members. Wilda, anytime you or your friends would want to make a trip this way, we would love to have you visit us. We meet every second Thursday of the month at the Sokol Hall in Ennis. Libbie Vrla reported that she talked with Betty Landsfeld, and she

sent greetings to everyone. We miss you. We hope you can make our November meeting. Libbie also said Helen Skrasek from Fort Worth wants to come with her and Lil for a visit next month. Helen lived in Ennis for many years. We hope she can make it. We would love to see you, Helen. Libbie Elsik reported talking with Vickie and Jerry Kohn. They send greetings to everyone. We haven’t seen them in a long time. It is always good to hear from our long-time members. Lil had on display the quilt top that we will quilt next month for the Junior Sokol 2008 Polka Festival quilt. She also had a new square made for us to look at and see if we wanted to piece a top like it. I think it was the log cabin square. Everyone agreed that they wanted to make it. Sidney Bridewell showed a little cloth doll and small square of material that she bought at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was the version of a Morena doll and had a beautiful story about her— something about spring, summer, and fall. Sorry, Sidney, I can’t remember it all. She is donating it to our scrapbook. Thanks, Sidney. Thank yous went out to the following for their donations—Dorothy Prachyl - dinner plates; Sidney Bridewell and Libbie Vrla - cards; and Libbie Elsik - several plastic bags of buttons, all sizes, and several of our members took buttons; and Eleanora Pelzel - monetary donation for quilting her quilt last month. President Sadie welcomed back Martha Ritchey after a long absence. A short discussion was held on our 50th celebration to be held the second week in February, 2008. Pat Fowler will be writing the history of our Club. She will research how many quilts have been quilted since the Club started. I am anxious to hear that amount. Thank you, Pat. Libbie Vrla talked briefly about her and Lil’s trip to Germany. It was very interesting. They had a great time. I am sure Libbie will write about it in her Fort Worth Friendship Club report. The door prize was brought by Dorothy J. Kudrna and won by Esther Cunningham. We had our little gift exchange which is always fun. President Sadie announced the time change (Daylight Savings Time ends) on November 4. Our next meeting will be November 8. She adjourned the meeting.

Lodge 258, Seguin Members Ride SPJST Float
Members of Lodge 258, Seguin ride the SPJST Float in the Guadalupe County Fair Parade held Friday, October 12, 2007, in Seguin. Pictured riding the float are, left to right, State FAC Chester Jenke, Kailee Jenke, Kendyl Zunker, Taylor Petty, Lori Petty, and Lana Zunker.
Other News Dorothy Prachyl and husband Wesley traveled to Bryan, Texas, to watch great-granddaughter Sara play soccer. She is the granddaughter of son Michael. Esther Cunningham has been on the road again. The Fojt sisters were together celebrating sister Helen Reave’s 80th birthday on September 13 and younger sister Frankie Morgan’s 64th on September 15. They all traveled New Mexico for sight-seeing in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. They always have a great time. The last of September, Esther and husband Bob attended Bob’s ship reunion, U.S.S. Salem in Quency, Massachusetts. The U.S.S. Salem is now a museum. While in the Boston area, they had dinner with daughterin-law Elena and grandson Michael Smalky, age 16. It has been three years since they had seen them. They all had a great time. Ella Mae Zmolek said that she was tired and needed a rest. I can see why. She and husband Jerry attended Heritage Day at the State Fair. The following Sunday, they attended the benefit at the Dallas Sokol, featuring the Petr Micka Cimbalova Orchestra and the Cloverleaf Orchestra. They also attended the Wendish Festival in Serbine, Texas, and the Slovak reunion at the KJT Hall in Ennis. No wonder she needs a rest. Plans are being made for the 100th Sokol anniversary in 2008. Gym classes have resumed. The tots performed at the State Fair, and they were very good. Our senior class has also started. It was good to see
everyone. We have a great group, and we have lots of fun. Dorothy J. Kudrna, Vlasta Laznovsky, and myself attended the State Fair with Sylvia Laznovsky. We had a great time, enjoyed the program and food, and seeing everyone. I had such a great time that my shoes fell apart. Thanks to Larry’s duct tape, he saved the day. Another long story, but we had many good laughs. Thanks for the cooler weather. I am ready for it. So till November 8, stay well and happy. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. See you then. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—
Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 40 members and two guests present. Our guests were Fran Schultz and Liz Howard who was a guest of Monalee Hattendorf. President Alice Barnes welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Alice read a “Prayer for October” which was followed by a prayer in memory of our longtime member, Geneva Hennessey, who died on September 8. May her soul rest in peace. Our sympathy goes out to her family. The Club will have
two masses said for Geneva. Several of our members attended Geneva’s visitation and funeral. Joe Kozel on his accordion and our Czech singers were thanked for providing the entertainment before the meeting which was enjoyed by all. It was nice to have Lydia Alholm with us again. Secretary Rose Ann Spann read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. A thank you note was read from Earline Finney for the monetary gift given in memory of her father, Earl Godfrey. It was further reported that several cash donations were received by the Club in memory of Geneva Hennessey which all will be acknowledged by the secretary. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to October celebrants— Alice Barnes, Sharron Connelly, Ima Lou Crider, Irene Green, Mary Schneider, Mary Windham, and guest, Fran Schultz. May you all have many more. It was announced that in November we bring food items for the St. Thomas Food Bank. The hostesses for November will be Mary Ann Kozel, Shirley Martin, and Rose Ann Spann. Our Thanksgiving luncheon was discussed, and Mary Ann Krivanek and Mary Ann and Joe Kozel volunteered to bake the turkeys and make dressing. The Club will provide the turkeys, and we are so fortunate to have such wonderful cooks to volunteer to do the baking. Thanks, ladies and Joe! Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported on sending get well cards to Geneva Hennessey, Irene Green, Ima Lou Crider, and Jimmy Horner. Ima Lou reported that she had laser surgery on her eye. The little gift raffle was a lot of fun. We had so many gifts left over that they were given away as door prizes in addition to the ones brought by Rose Ann Spann and Tracy Horn. So everyone went home with more than one gift. President Alice appointed Lois Smith, Linda Horner, and Mary Ann Kozel to serve on the nominating committee. Their slate of officers for the year 2008 will be presented and voted upon in November. The new officers will then assume duties in January. Greetings were received from Rosemary Gribble’s daughter. Mrs. Gribble was a longtime member who passed away a few years ago. I reported that Sokol Dallas was hosting a benefit for the Czech

Educational Foundation of Texas featuring the Petr Micka Cimbalova Orchestra from the Czech Republic on Sunday, October 14. Everyone was invited to attend. Mary Ann Krivanek announced that a Czech language class was being held at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth each Thursday with Joe Janecka as instructor. Everyone was also invited to join the class. Our October hostesses Ann Conner, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Wilma Stell were thanked as they did a super job. They were also thanked for the Halloween decorations; we had pumpkins and chocolates on each table. Thanks, ladies! Following the meeting, grace was said, a wonderful lunch was enjoyed then games were played. A good time was had by all. News Elsie Anders and her grandson attended the concert and reception featuring the Petr Micka Cimbalova Orchestra at the University of North Texas in Denton. She said the music and singing was enjoyed by all who gave a standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert. Several of our Friendship Club members attended the dinner and the performance at Dallas Sokol where Rosie Steinman and her granddaughter Angel wore their krojs. Everyone enjoyed the program very much. Betty Landsfeld and Betty Stanley Krenek and other family members, just returned from Milwaukee where they attended the wedding of Betty’s granddaughter, Crystal Wiedower, to Tony Mayer on Saturday, October 20. Betty said the wedding was beautiful. They were wined and dined with luncheons, dinners, and parties which
they all enjoyed very much. Crystal’s mother, Anne, made the wedding cake, and Betty said she didn’t know that her daughter had such talents. Looks like Betty taught her well! Willie Mae Becan, Faith Lindeau, and Rita Thomas had a busy few days volunteering at the annual Senior Citizens Fair held at Amon G. Carter Exhibit Hall. I recognized Mary Ann Kozel’s aprons and casserole carriers, Willie Mae had her plants for sale, and she also saw the bird and flower paintings by Ann Zurovetz which were very good. Hope all of you were successful in sales. Elsie Anders, Joe Kozel, Mary Ann Krivanek, Rosie Steinman, Rita Thomas, and I are enjoying Czech class at Lodge 92. Joe Janecka is such a great instructor, and we especially enjoy all the Czech history. Virgie Valentine’s granddaughter, Candana Valentine, will be getting married in Egypt soon. Virgie is enjoying all the planning as her granddaughter keeps her updated on all the plans. Virgie, you really need to rethink this and go to the wedding! Anna Marie and Bill Moncrief traveled to Lisle, Illinois, to see Benedictine Sister of Sacred Heart Monastery, Sister Mary Charlotte Vesely, and joined in the celebration of her 70 years of Monastic profession on Saturday, October 6. The Eucharistic liturgy was celebrated at Sacred Heart Chapel followed by a buffet in the Villa Center. They were also invited by Sister Judith Ann Heble, Prioress, to attend the evening dinner and Jubilee celebration with the Nuns on the evening before where they were served a beautiful meal. Anna Marie said that Saturday was indeed a day of Jubilee celebra-
tion with Sister Mary Charlotte and the Sisters. Sister Mary Charlotte entered the convent at the age of 17 and served at St. Thomas and St. George’s in Fort Worth. Anna Marie further said that the remodeling on the Monastery and Chapel are quite an improvement and that the stained glass windows are something to see. Sister Bonita gave them a nice tour of the Monastery and Villa St. Benedict. Anna Marie said they had a most enjoyable visit and her husband, Bill, was a “big hit” with all the Nuns. My sister, Lil Kosarek and I, along with our friends, Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger of Dallas, recently spent two weeks touring Germany. Our tour started in Hamburg, then on to Lubeck, Berlin, Leipzi, Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich, and further south to Oberammergan, Rothenburg, Heidelberg, and ended up in Mainz. We saw and visited lots of Lutheran and Catholic churches, castles, art galleries and museums. Northern part of Germany was mostly flat lands, but the further south we went, we saw rolling hills, small villages all with church steeples, and beautiful painted houses. All the large cities had been bombed so the downtown buildings were more on the modern style of the 1950 and 1960s. There is still construction going on and were told that just 12 years ago, there were still 40,000 cranes in Berlin. The City of Dresden which had been destroyed right before the war ended, had been rebuilt in the original design. It was rather strange to walk inside these beautiful old looking buildings to find the inside very modern. We did the usual tourist things, too many to mention all, but in Berlin we visited the Holocaust Memorial, Check
Point Charlie, saw the old Berlin wall, and a row of bricks have been laid for the entire length of the original wall, saw the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building which has been restored to its former glory, and we walked to the top of the dome, and visited the Pergamon Museum. On a free evening, we took a cab to the Hard Rock Cafe’ for dinner just to see the stained glass window made by our friend, John Kebrle of Dallas. We impressed all the waiters that we knew the artist, and they didn’t hesitate to ask some patrons to move so that we could take pictures. In Dresden, we visited the Green Vault to see the jewels and art, and attended the opera, “Cinderella,” at the Semper Opera House which was most enjoyable. Yes, in Munich, we went to the Hofbrauhaus for a beer and was it ever crowded and noisy. I just happened to sit next to someone and asked where he was from and he said “I don’t remember” and have to admit, he and his group were really having a good time. We saw too many things to name them all, but we did see the Olympic Stadium and the soccer dome which was built a few years ago for the World Cup. We took a day trip to Salzburg where we saw the birthplace of Mozart and the setting of the Sound of Music. It is such a beautiful city. It was a beautiful drive south to the Bavaria area of Oberammergau with a stop to visit the beautiful Wies Church, viewed Mad King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle and toured his Linderhof Castle before arriving at the Passion Play village. They are already preparing for the time of their next performances which is still a few years away as the men have started growing their beards. Then, it was on

to Rothenburg, Europe’s best preserved medieval town. Then on to Heidelberg Castle and Marksburg Castle. On Sunday, our last full day, we cruised the Rhine River and viewed the beautiful vineyards and castle ruins on the hills along each side. It was a wonderful trip, the weather was nice and on the cool side with rain only on one day, but it didn’t stop us. We traveled with lots of lovely folks from across the United States and had a grand time—just too much to write about it all. Next Meeting—November 7 The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 7. (I’m so glad so many folks read my articles and noted that I made a mistake on the date of our October meeting. Sorry about that—guess I was in a hurry to get it written before leaving for Germany.) Don’t forget your dish for our Thanksgiving luncheon; bring
VĚSTNÍK something to complement turkey and dressing. See you then! To Mary Ann Krivanek, Mary Ann and Joe Kozel, don’t forget the turkeys! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
Fort Worth Ladies Circle Our October meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. We had 40 members attending. Alice Barnes led us in prayer. There were no minutes from our September meeting as I was absent. Doris Overstreet took notes for me, but they are temporarily misplaced. We thanked Joe Kozel for his entertaining music. Several ladies brought their crafts
to be offered for sale. We have some talented members. Also, several members brought toiletries for the Crisis Center and canned food for the Tarrant Food Bank. If you forgot yours, please bring it to our next meeting. Joyce reminded us there will be a country/western dance on November 4, and our charity dance will be November 18. Music will be furnished by Randy and the 92nd Road House Band. All attending will be expected to pay $8 at the door. Since we usually eat out in November, the members chose to have our lunch catered and eat at the hall. Gloria checked out several caterers, and Risky’s Bar-B-Que was voted to feed us. Magdalene Kronenburger brought a cake that was decorated so beautifully. We decided the cake was too special to cut, so it was raffled. It brought in $20.50, and Norma
McLendon won it. Our president brought each one of us a Halloween gift, and Charity Ellsworth also gave us treats. She is growing up to be very helpful. Birthday wishes went to Mary Windham, Alice Barnes, Ima Lou Crider, Bill Campbell, Estelle Hurtik, Norma McLendon, and Anne Key. We had 16 door prizes; a lot of the gifts were of Halloween motif. Gloria read some jokes, and Alice also told one. It’s great to end our meeting with a laugh. Grace was given by Alice; the meeting was adjourned; and as usual, we had a wonderful lunch which was hosted by Alene Kercho, Mary Ann Gibson, Glenn Gibson, Mary Ann Kozel, and Mary Ann Krivanek. See you all at our November 13th meeting. Fraternally yours, Evelyn Scaff, Secretary —SPJST—

Cabin cruiser built by deaf couple From The Deaf Texan July 30, 1963 One of the most elaborate homemade cabin cruisers in the Grand Prairie, Texas, area was built by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mikus of Grand Prairie, six years ago. The Mikuses, both deaf, built the professional-looking boat in their workshop at home. The project took two years. The boat was built from custom specifications based on the various blueprints and photographs which Mikus collected from do-it-yourself plans. The hull is covered with nylon canvas sheets sealed with plastic resins, a procedure that is commonly used by many boat manufacturers. Even the electrical system of the cabin cruiser carries luxury items. It includes starter, check, and cigarette lighter, all which function perfectly. The boat was clocked at about 17 knots. The Mikuses say they have never had trouble with the boat since it was launched. Mr. Mikus, a carpenter with union card, has resided in Grand Prairie for 20 years. His wife is the former Margelene Reynolds of Oklahoma.

Lodge 9, Snook youth shares pumpkin poem
Lodge 25, Ennis youth enjoys Halloween party
Dear Vestnik Readers, This poem was passed around in an email, and I thought I’d share it.
Dear Readers, I went to the Halloween/hayride party. We went on this scary bridge, and the bridge started to crack! When we went on the bridge, we saw an old car in the ditch! But we made it across. After the hayride, we roasted marshmallows and wieners. Then, we got to eat them. It was all good! Love, Amanda Droste —SPJST—
Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God lifts you up, takes you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. He opens you up, touches you deep inside, and scoops out all the yucky stuff—including the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then, He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside you to shine for all the world to see. Remember these words and let your light shine brighter than ever before. Fraternally submitted, Zachary Shelfer —SPJST—

C e l e b r a t i o n a n d T r i b u t e t o J o s e p h i n e J a l u f k a B u r i ’ss L i f e of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Eulogy Written and Delivered by Grandson John Buri at Josephine’s Service on October 1, 2007
A thoughtful sister, a caring aunt, good friend, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Josephine was so many things to so many people. Always one to tell a good story or memory about the past in her CzechAmerican accent, Josephine would have wanted to make sure that we all remembered the good times we had with her. She was born in 1914 to Charles and Julie Jalufka on a farm in Engle, Texas. She was the eldest of seven children and grew up at an early age to help her parents care for the family. I can still hear her tell one of her favorite stories about how she moved to Houston at age 14 to be the nanny of the Kaplan’s making four dollars a week. I will no doubt tell that story to my children when the time comes. She was married at age 24 to Fred Buri in 1938 after meeting at a dance at the old SPJST hall. They began their life in Houston and settled in the Denver-Harbor area where she lived throughout her life. She loved her son, Fred Charles, very much as family was so very important to her. There were so many things in her life that made her who she was, as many commented yesterday it was her energy that was so infectious. I think that the best way to celebrate her life is in a few snapshots of some great memories I have of her. - There wasn’t a flower or plant that she couldn’t grow – a green thumb doesn’t do her justice. She could tell you the name of just about every plant or flower she raised and in most cases, could tell you the name of the person who gave it to her. - Bingo nights at the lodge were her weekly getaway. If she bingo’ed the night before, she could tell you the name of the number she bingo’ed on and if she didn’t bingo, she’d tell you “it ain’t easy” and recount all the numbers that were called instead of her number. - There wasn’t a church picnic that she didn’t like. Josephine religiously attended the Praha Fest on August 15. From the bands to the stew and fried chicken to the cake walk and, of course, friends and family reuniting that day was marked on the calendar every year.
- If there was a wedding, dance, or family function where a band was playing – you better believe that Josephine was out there. And, if for some odd reason that I didn’t dance with her, you better believe that I’d hear about it that next day. - In her opinion, Saturday mornings were made for the local polka and waltz radio shows. Every Saturday she would listen to the AM station no matter if she was in Houston, Palacios, or every small town in between. - She was always close with her sisters, Edith, Bessie, Della, Olga, Emma, and brother Charles and, of course, all their children and grandchildren. Josie or Aunt Josie as she is known, she spoke to many nearly on a daily basis in Czech and in English. - Now, Josephine was no doctor of medicine, but without a doubt she would prescribe Vicks vape-o-rub to anyone with the slightest cough or sneeze. She would swear up and down that the only thing you’d need to start feeling better was a little “Vickings.” - Josephine loved to write letters. Whether it was to her cousin Agnes who lived in the country without electricity, her friends in California or to the Czech language paper the Nasinec, she always liked to let folks know what was going on with her in Houston. - My last and best memory of my grandmother was our wedding in San Antonio last year. Even though the trip took a lot out of her, she wanted to see her grandson – her one and only as she liked to say – get married. And, of course . . . we danced. If I had to describe Josephine in just one word, it would be “spirit.” For those of you knew her well, you know that her spirit was the one thing that never left her even as the years took their toll on her body. Her spirit and sharp mind was the thing that no cancer, illness, weakness or old age could ever take away – and it is that spirit that I hope that you will all remember of her – and celebrate Josephine Buri. —SPJST—

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce jedenactřicátá Lesson 31
Spelling and Punctuation
In today’s lesson, we are repeating part of a previous lesson relating to correct Czech spelling and punctuation. The items touch on concern some of the most oftenmade mistakes.
Zde opakujeme lekce z minulého čísla týkající se dělení vět a pravopisu. Týká se to chyb, které se nejčastěji dělají českými dopisovateli. Proto, věříme, že to stojí za opakování. Use of Capital Letters
There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Example:
Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963. Včera byla středa, 14 července 1963. *
*
*
*
*
Consequently, days of the week and month are not capitalized. Not also that a simple period is usded after the date. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals.

Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech. *
*
*
*
*
Here are other important points in spelling:
Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the polite-formal usage are capitalized, as are those of the familiar-informal usage:
Vy, Vám, Váš; Ty, Tvůj, Tobě.
The latter are always in caps. The polite form is capitalized only when referring to one person. If you are referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are not capitalized. *
*
*
*
*
A common error made is when the formal Vy, Vás, Vám are used with a plural verb, although only one person is being addressed. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
Wrong: Vy, (one person) jste včera jeli do města. Right: Vy jste jel do města. *
*
*
*
*
The pronoun já is not capitalized. Neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English.) Example:
Mám česku ženu. — I have a Czech wife. Mluvíme česky. — We speak
VĚSTNÍK Czech.
*
Example:
*
*
*
*
Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English. (See also Lesson 5.) tečka (.) čárka (,) vykričnik (!) uvozovací středník (;) dvojtečka (:) pomlčka (—) otázník (?) znaménka (“ “) závorky ( ) rozdělováci znaménko (-) *
*
*
*
*
One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas. Commas are used:
—before and after a relative clause: Ztrátil jsem knihu, kterou mí dál.
—before and after a noun clause: Je dobře, že tomu rozumíš.
—before and after an adjective clause: Všechen cukr, všechna káva. —before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile mě uviděl, šel pryč. *

*
*
*
*
Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and are inverted at the end of the quotation. The trend in the United States is to use the standard English quotation marks — “ ” .

A musical treat “Delightfully Dvorak” Nov. 15 at CCCH On November 15, 2007, at Prague Hall at 7 p.m., the Czech Center Museum Houston is proud to present the Noel Martin Ensemble performing works of Antonin Dvorak, master of Czech classical music. Widely regarded as the most distinguished of Czech composers, Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) produced attractive and vigorous music possessed of clear formal outlines, melodies that are both memorable and spontaneous-sounding, and a colorful, effective instrumental sense. Dvorak is considered one of the major figures of Czech nationalism. His symphonies are among his most widely appreciated works. He was notable for making use of folk influences, which he expertly combined with classical forms in works of all genres. The Noel Martin Ensemble consisting of two violins, two violas, and tow celli, will present an evening

Texas is a diverse state, home to a rich array of cultures and traditions that reflect the many different people who have come to settle here. Among those people are the descendants of Czech heritage and their ancestors who have significantly shaped the culture and traditions of Texas that we know today. People from Bohemia and Moravia visited Texas in small numbers, but Czech immigration in Texas began when Reverend Josef Arnost Bergmann brought his family to Galveston on March 2, 1850. Upon settling, Bergmann wrote home about the awaiting opportunities he found in Texas and stimulated Czech immigration in the Lone Star State. In the years that followed, groups of Czech families responded and waves of immigrants from Moravia soon poured into Texas. Texans of Czech descent have helped to build the foundation of the Texas we know and love today. Through the years, they have maintained important aspects of their Czech heritage, from traditional art and folklore to ethnic foods and the preservation of the Czech language. Czech culture and traditions have enriched our great state’s heritage, adding to the diversity and vibrancy that uniquely defines Texas. In celebration of their history and the many contributions they have made to Texas, people of Czech descent celebrate Czech Heritage Month in October. At this time, therefore, I encourage all Texans join in these celebrations to recognize the contributions of Texans of Czech descent. Always, let us take pride in the strength that diversity brings to our great state. Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim October 2007,
Czech Heritage Month in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof. In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this the 1st day of October, 2007.
