Saluting Veterans Day
e will observe Veterans Day on Sunday, November 11. I encourage you to take a moment to reflect upon and appreciate those who fought for the rights and freedoms we all enjoy in this country. The right to choose our leaders. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Those freedoms, along with many others, are what make our country the greatest in the world. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are actually more than 19 million war veterans in the United States. These include veterans from World Wars I and II, as well as the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. Imagine 380 football stadiums full of people and you’ve got the picture. That’s a lot of veterans! In addition, more than 48 million Americans have served in the military during war and peace since 1776. Saluting the Flag This information comes from Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Jerry Elzner. Jerry says he obtained the information from the Web site http://www.military.com/features/. U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe’s Bill (S. 1877) was unanimously passed clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and service personnel not in uniform to salute the flag. The salute is a form of honor and respect, representing pride in one’s military service. Veterans and service members continue representing the military services even when not in uniform. I look forward to seeing those who served saluting proudly at baseball games, parades, and formal events. This is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the millions of veterans in the United States who
have served in the military and remain as role models to other citizens. Those who are currently serving or have served in the military have earned this right, and their recognition will be an inspiration to others. Brother Jerry also shares the following “Health Report.” But, please read at your own risk, and do not get any ideas about sending articles to the Vestnik looking like this! Health Report Cna you raed tihs? Olny 55 plepoe out of 100 can. I cdnuoit blveiee that I cluod aulacity uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. Not only did I enjoy solving it — but I got it correct! Try it. Look for the answer in next week’s Vestnik. There is a bus with 7 girls. Each girl carries 7 bags. Inside each bag there are 7 cats. Every cat has 7 kittens. All cats have 4 legs each. Question: How many legs are in the bus? —SPJST—

From the President’s Department State FAC announces 2007 State Tournaments
Extra! Extra! Great News for Domino Players Approval was granted at the October Supreme Lodge meeting to add a State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament. Please make plans now to be in Temple on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Due to the short notice, the Home Office will host the tournament in the meeting room of the new addition. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m. SPJST members ages 16 and above are eligible. The entry fee is $7 per person and includes snacks and lunch. To register, send your entry fee along with your name, lodge number, address, phone number, and email by January 7 to P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. State Tournaments Thank you to the many lodges who submitted requests to host one of our state tournaments in 2008. It was very encouraging at the response that we received, and we look forward to seeing member participation in these tournaments. The hosts for three of our state tournaments were recently determined in a drawing during the October Supreme Lodge meeting. As a result of that drawing, the host lodges are as follows: SPJST State Tarok Tournament Saturday, February 2, 2008 Lodge 47, Seaton SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament Saturday, March 1, 2008 Lodge 6, Cottonwood SPJST State Regular 42 Tournament Saturday, April 5, 2008 Lodge 24, Cyclone Also, make a note that the SPJST State Horseshoe and State Youth and Adult Washer Tournament has been set for Saturday, May 17 at Lions Park in Temple. Attention, District Four Members Please make plans to attend the District Four Fall Fun Day to be held on November 18. The event will be held at Cobb Park, located at 2302 State Street in Abilene. Please check your Vestnik for a schedule of events. A good time awaits those who attend. Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly
approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges will be electing the leaders of your lodge for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of its goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2008? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year. With new officers coming into position, this may be the perfect time for your lodge to consider having a brainstorming session. If your lodge is interested, please contact me and I will be happy to schedule a session with your officers. Remember, the sessions take about an hour, and lodges that have been through a brainstorming session, have gone home with some wonderful ideas. It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions and ideas. When asked to assist with activities during the year, please help your lodge officers. Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process. While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back pages of the Vestnik for your meeting dates and times. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. If any of this information has changed, please contact Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and update your lodge information. Outgoing Officers Remember to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who does not seek re-election or is not elected in 2008 is eligible. The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meetings. SPJST Fraternalist of the Year Your lodge nominees for SPJST Fraternalist of the Year are due January 11. Receiving this award is certainly a great honor, and each lodge is urged to submit the name of its candidate. Each lodge is eligible to send
VĚSTNÍK in one candidate per year. For more information or for a form, please contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578. Each year, the SPJST Fraternalist of the Year winner is forwarded to the National Fraternal Congress of America to be considered for the National Fraternalist of the Year. The SPJST Fraternalist of the Year award is meant to honor an individual adult member for his or her accomplishments and involvements during the past year (2007). The award is not based on a candidate’s involvement or contributions that occurred many years ago. For that, the Home Office also provides lodges with Lifetime Achiever Awards. Details on this program, including a listing of all past honorees, will be sent with the Lodge FAC’s December mailing. Deadlines The Mid-Year Fraternal Incentive Report was due in the State Fraternal Activities Coordinators office on July 13. Thanks to the many lodges who submitted this report. As of this writing, 27 lodges have not mailed their report. Before any incentive money is given to a lodge, all reports must be in. If you are one of the 27, please take a few moments to complete the report and mail to the office of the State FAC. If you need assistance, please feel free to give me or Tammy a call, and we will be glad to assist you. Your District FAC listed at the end of this letter is also available to assist you. Soon all lodges will need to complete and return to the Home Office a Year-End Fraternal Incentive Report and a Year-End Fraternal Support and Community Service Report. These reports are extremely important because they determine if your lodge will receive an incentive check and allow SPJST to validate its taxexempt status. Even if your lodge does not qualify for an award, these are extremely important since these are filed with the National Fraternal Congress of America. These reports will be due January 11. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive This year’s goal is to raise $20,000. This is in addition to the allocation, which the Supreme Lodge had made. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the Scholarship Program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,700 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any
amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31. Deer Antler Contest This contest is for SPJST members, and only Texas whitetail deer entries are eligible. This popular contest began November 1 and runs through January 31. The rules and categories will be the same as last year. Again, this year there will be two categories: free-range deer and high fenced deer. Free range is self-explanatory, which means deer that have free range to travel without any restrictions. High fenced deer is one that has been raised primarily in an enclosure. High fenced deer are usually raised in an area enclosed by an eight-foot fence (or higher) and come in a variety of acreage sizes. An entry form and rules are available from Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at the Home Office. Veterans Day On November 11, please remember to honor our veterans who have bravely answered the call to defend our right of freedom, aided and comforted our friends and allies, and have turned away countless aggressors. We, as a nation, can never repay our debt of gratitude to the many men and women who died in the line of battle or were wounded to protect the right of our freedom. Please pause on this day and at your local lodge meeting to recognize and thank the veterans and the many military men and women who today are fighting to protect our freedom. This will fulfill one of your lodge’s fraternal acts. Christmas Open House We are making tentative plans to host our annual Holiday Open House on December 3 at the Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple pending completion of the new construction. We look forward to meeting each and every one of you. We are planning some great fraternal events for all members and their guests. Our open house will take place immediately following the Temple Christmas parade. What a great time to visit the Home Office and see the new addition! Refreshments will be served and of course, there is a rumor that Santa will visit the Home Office. Spread the word about this fun event. Watch the Vestnik for additional details as the date approaches.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on member activities Some of our members have been enjoying a bit of travel during the last few months. Jeffery and Celine
Barcak and their children Mathieu and Lea went to Las Vegas. They took their parents Gene and Georgia Barcak with them. They stayed on The Strip downtown. Everybody had a great time even though lady luck did not smile on them in the casinos. It is a great thing to have an opportunity for grandparents to spend time
with the grandchildren. I suppose you would say that Alan Beck, nephew of Paul Beck, was doing some traveling, too, but of a little different nature. Alan recently flew to California to climb Mount Whitney. At 14,000 feet, this mountain is the highest in the lower 48 states. In the past, he has climbed
11
Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as numerous peaks in Maine and New Hampshire. He has also hiked the complete length of the Appalachian Trail. He is quite an adventurous young man. His uncle Paul expressed the hope that Alan does not get the silly idea to climb Mount Everest.

Lodge 187 Round Rock meets Nov. 11 For the October program, Lodge 187, Round Rock enjoyed discussing the Czech history and culture fun from the Vestnik. Also, Margie gave a history of why some states do not celebrate Columbus Day. It is considered an affront to all native Americans. Did you know that 85 percent of the native population was wiped out either by disease or wars after the Europeans arrived in America?

Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day: Tuesday, October 16, 2007 Lillie and I would like to thank everyone who came to our Fellowship Day held at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas on October 16, 2007. Thanks to Adolph Provazek who played polkas and waltzes on his accordion. Everyone enjoyed listening to Adolph’s music while they played games and socialized. Once again, lunch was delicious. Lunch selections included spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread, roast pork with mashed potatoes, sausages, fresh fruit, vegetables, salads, apple pie, pecan pie, cakes, and kolaches. We truly appreciate everyone who brought food to share, helped serve lunch, and helped clean up at the end of the day. This month, several of our regular participants and volunteers were unable to attend the Fellowship
Day. Several individuals were off enjoying a cruise; others had medical issues; and still others had last minute conflicts. So I would like to thank my daughter, Cindy Cappel, for taking time off from work to come and help us set up, decorate, and serve food. Cindy and her husband, Eric Cappel, who also took time off from work, volunteered and called our bingo games. They both did a great job. Thank you. There were four individuals having birthdays in October. They were Mildred Petter, Rosemary Zabojnik, Martha Mahdak Frnka, and Bessie Tydlaska. Birthday hats were distributed, and everyone sang the birthday song. Since my birthday is on Halloween, I was given a special birthday crown to wear. Thanks and best wishes to all our
October birthdays! I gave two secret door prizes this month. The lucky winners were Wanda Petr and Ben Jarma. This month’s winners were the two individuals who were lucky enough to randomly pick the red forks I placed among all the other forks. Congratulations, Wanda and Ben. Thanks again to all of you who came and joined our day of fun, food, and fellowship. Please note we will not have Fellowship Day in November or December due to the holidays. We wish you all happy holidays. Fraternally, Martha Mahdak Frnka Lillie Maxcy Jones —SPJST—

Lodge 191, Lufkin plans Nov. 17 President’s Ball On November 16, the Lufkin Dance Club will be having a dance. November 17 is the SPJST President’s Ball. This is our big dance of the year. Be sure to call Marilyn Page (936) 632-1124 for your tickets which are $15 per person, so we can know how much food we need to order. The Nominating Committee is still looking for members who will serve as officers next year. If you are willing, please give us a call. Our condolences to the family of Ima Jean Anderson, who passed away Monday, October 15. Ima Jean had been a member of SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin for many years and was instrumental in getting the lighted wreaths that hang on our walls as well as other decorations. She will be missed. If you need insurance or an annuity, it’s time to see an SPJST sales agent. It would be a great time to buy that child or grandchild a life insurance certificate. What better gift could you give them? Please keep our members who are having health problems in your prayers. Wanda Briley is facing surgery. Helen Boyd is better but not well. I saw Glova Schultz; she is feeling somewhat better. Mary Flowers

Lodge 160, San Angelo Supports Wall Junior High Library
In support of the youth in Lodge 160, San Angelo, a $200 donation was recently presented to the Wall Junior High Library. Lodge 160 Treasurer Sandra Jansa presented the check to Wall Junior High Librarian Kay Cotter. Mrs. Cotter was able to purchase 18 books for the library with the donation.
Lodge 204, Stephenville had its annual nine-pin no tap bowling tournament on October 6 and was again a success. The lodge donated $254.91 to the Foster’s Home for Children, the YABA (Young American Bowlers Alliance), and the SPJST Scholarship Fund. In the regular meeting on Sunday, October 21, we met across the street because the Koffee Kup was closed for a funeral. And, a motion was made and approved, to have the annual Christmas party on the second Saturday in December. So everyone mark your calendar and come to the Christmas party which is free of charge to all members. This is Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at The Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico. Gracie and I have been out of pocket, so to speak, for most of October because Gracie’s son Andy Nelson had a motorcycle accident and spent
two weeks in ICU at Tyler Medical Center with a large lump on his head and a broken vertebra in his neck and one in his lower back. Gracie had been staying with him to help him get back on his feet and doing things for himself. I have been running back and forth helping and coming home to feed the three cats that we have. Also, our water well went dry, and I had to have a new well drilled so I now have a 610-foot hole in the ground. But I do have some nice clear water coming into the house again. I would like to wish all members happy holidays and good health to everyone. Smile, and the whole world will smile with you. Norman M. Kneschk President/Treasurer —SPJST—

Thanksgiving Smart
With fire-wise common sense, you can make sure tragedy does not come between you and the festive holiday you have planned. Follow these fire prevention tips to help you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Keep your family and overnight guests safe with a working smoke detector on every level of the house, in every bedroom, and in the halls adjacent to the bedrooms. Test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least twice a year.
Overnight guests should be instructed on the fire escape plan and designated meeting place for your home. Keep the kitchen off-limits to young children and adults who are not helping with food preparations to lessen the possibility of kitchen mishaps.
When your parents are cooking let them know that they should not wear clothing with loose sleeves or dangling jewelry. The clothing can catch on fire and the jewelry can catch on pot handles, causing spills and burns. Ask your parents to cook on the back burners when possible and turn pot handles so they don’t extend over the edge of the stove.
Let your parents know to never leave cooking unattended. If you must leave the kitchen while cooking, turn off the stove or have someone else watch what is being cooked. Keep Thanksgiving decorations and kitchen clutter away from sources of direct heat.
Tommy the Turkey is getting ready for Thanksgiving. Help Tommy have the right information to keep his family safe this Thanksgiving season by filling in the blanks and answering the questions below.
1. Keep your family and overnight guests safe with a working _______________ _______________ on every level of the house.
2. Overnight guests should be instructed on the _______________ _______________ _______________ and designated meeting places for your home. 3. Who should the kitchen be off-limits to if they are not helping with food preparation? ______________ and _______________
4. When preparing food in the kitchen what should not be worn? ______________________________________________________ 5. Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club reports on October meeting Dear Vestnik, These are the notes for the Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club meeting held on Sunday, October 7, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Holland. Alysse called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. Kristi led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. Afterwards, we had a moment of silence. JoAnn read the minutes from the last meeting, and they were approved. Youth Leader Kristi read the balance for Kelsey, the treasurer. No other officer reports were given. Members present for the September meeting were Alysse Luna, Kelsey Luna, JoAnn Mazoch, Nichole Festa, Alexis Festa, Ryan Festa, Garrett Festa, Kirsten White, and Samantha White. We welcomed two new members, Garrett Festa and Ryan Festa. We are so happy you joined our club! JoAnn read the minutes, and they were accepted as read. We discussed old business. Kristi suggested three choices for the digital camera that was voted on in the last meeting. It was voted and decided that she would purchase the $79 Kodak camera at Wal-Mart. Mrs. Mazoch suggested that the club also purchase a carrying case. Mrs. Festa suggested that the club also purchase a memory card. Kristi stated that she would donate the memory card. It was voted and decided on that the club would purchase the case and rechargeable batteries. Six members would be going to Six Flags on October 20 for the District Two trip. The youth club would pay for each of the members to go. For Make a Difference Day, Kristi called SYD John Hoelscher and confirmed that the youth club could
donate a basket to the Holland Fall Carnival silent auction. The proceeds from the basket would go towards scholarships for the Holland High School seniors. It was decided that the basket should be a “baking basket” and each member signed up to bring an item for the basket. Heleana volunteered to be the gathering point for all the items in the Holland High School office by October 25. Kristi would purchase an apron and potholder from the youth club account for the basket and donate an SPJST cookbook. We discussed new business. Kristi asked if anyone participated in Texas Fraternal Congress. Kirsten and Samantha White stated that they danced beseda and that it was a lot of fun. Heleana asked if anyone would like to participate with beseda as we are always welcoming new dancers. Kristi suggested the youth club do a fund-raiser, some of the suggestions were bake sale during bingo, each family bring a dollar amount, pay dues of $1 for each member per month, and a calendar fund-raiser. Kristi suggested to discuss it further at the next meeting. We discussed December dates for the Christmas social and meeting. We narrowed the dates to include December 8 and December 15. It was decided that the youth club would do the same thing as last year and go to Cici’s Pizza to eat, do a gift exchange then go bowling. The December meeting and social would be discussed further at our next meeting. Heleana stated that she had gotten several rolls of film developed from YAD and State YAD and asked if anyone would like to look at the pictures. Kristi suggested that we look at the pictures and start working on the scrapbook in January after all the holiday business was finished. Kristi announced that the November elections would be coming up and that she would not be able to run again this year. She stated that

Texas Czech Dialect Project to preserve Czech history
Driving across the plains of Texas, one sees the passing of signs for towns and shops that seem out of place. Czech names stand out amongst the waving prairie grasses, church steeples stand watch over lonely hilltops. These are the remnants of the once-vibrant émigré community of Moravians and Czechs in Texas. These people came largely from North and East Moravia, less from Bohemia, Silseia, and Slovakia. From the 1840s through the 1920s, a steady stream of immigration kept the communities, separated by the plains from their English-speaking countrymen, largely autonomous and isolated. This community managed to retain the use of its mother tongue and indeed, propogate it in Texas through a press many times more vibrant than the American presses. Their language was largely uninterrupted, and used as a first language for the citizens in this “Little Czech Nation” until the coming of the World Wars. As the flow of immigration waned with the establishment of Czechoslovakia, America began to increasingly encroach on the communities, discouraging the use of Czech, and eventually stopping the transmission of the langauge somewhere in the 1950s and 1960s with very few exceptions. The speakers of these dialects of Czech brought with them their native language, much of it extremely archaic, blending various dialects in settlements across the state into new, uniquely Texan dialects. Now, as the last fluent speakers of the language begin to pass on, a project has begun at the University of Texas at Austin to document, catalogue, and help the community attempt to save its language from its death. It has been estimated that Czech in Texas might not survive another decade. An undergraduate student, John Tomeček, who comes from the Moravian and Czech community of Texas, has founded the Texas Czech Dialect Project to combat this language death and expand documentation of the lan-
guage. The project is being modelled on the Texas German Dialect Project, conducted by Dr. Hans Boas of the University of Texas at Austin, which has enjoyed great success in cataloging the German dialects of Texas. The primary goal of the project is to conduct extensive interview fieldwork to collect as much spoken Czech in Texas with as much geographic variation as possible, to then be applied to academic research to produce a comprehensive work on the language in Texas. This material is also intended to be used to aid the Czech community in preserving and reasserting the use of its mother tongue in Texas. Currently, the project is still getting on its feet and needs help in terms of collecting information. Three types of data are being collected and considered for this work. Primarily, the project is interested in collecting spoken Czech in interviews with speakers today who demonstrate their own unique dialects of Czech. These interview sessions are recorded on a digital recorder, the files of which are then usable for digital analysis. The session consists primarily of general and specific questions, covering family, town/area his-
tory, hobbies, religion, language use, and many more. Since the idea is to encourage speakers to use Czech, any topic that the interviewee is interested in presents a valid point for conversation. Many interviews, in fact, have consisted of simply playing taroky or dominoes over a cup of coffee or a pivo. A large number of people prefer to be interviewed in groups, often with friends or family. While some may think that the interviewers would not prefer this, they could not be more wrong; group interviews allow a more easy-going, natural use of the language, which is the heart of what is trying to be catalogued. Lastly, the interviewer presents a series of English-Czech translation tasks, designed to bring out unique variations on pronounciation. These are common phrases that have a great deal of variation in how they are said by different speakers of Czech. Outside of these new interviews, a series of older interviews, stretching from the work of Dr. Jakobson in the 1960s, to more recent recordings from the 1990s and early 2000s, are being digitized and acquired for use by the project, to present a more comprehensive set of examples of the language
Interested in Preserving Texas Czech?
Do you or anyone you know (friends, colleagues, lodge or church members, neighbors, family) speak Texas Czech? If so, you may be able to help document and preserve this unique language before it dies out! The Texas Czech Dialect Project (TCDP) is an organization at the University of Texas created to document and research the Czech language across Texas. The TCDP aims to preserve and provide information about the rich heritage of the Texas Czech dialects as they reflect the cultural and linguistic traditions of their residents.
Our ancestors came here with a vision of a community of Czechs and Moravians, free from foreign oppression and with the ability to raise their children in their own culture. Help us save our sacred mother tongue, that our ancestors gave so much for. If you are interested, please contact Project Director John Tomecek for more information. John M. Tomecek P.O. over time. The earliest works of Dr. Jakobson present interviews with speakers personally known by Mr Tomeček to have been extremely elderly at the time of recording. As these are on reel-to-reel tape, their preservation and digitization is currently being undertaken at the University of Texas by the project, the Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services, the Czech Program, and the Department of Slavic Studies. The final set of data being taken into consideration consists of the written word, ranging from newspapers to personal corrospondance, diaries, and other such works. While some of these are written in a literary style of Czech, as time progressed, they would be composed in the vernacular of the person writing them. Through this method, it is possible to learn a little about the language and ways of speaking of Texas Czech in times gone by. Once assembled, it is planned that these materials will be posted to a database website for the project and in a physical location, providing the Czechs in Texas access to them. This will provide an unprecedentedly large, concise source for all hoping to study this unique form of Czech language. Of course, no project of this sort is complete without public appilication and giving aid to those people for whom it is being conducted. The project has adopted the motto “Náš Jazyk, Náš Dědictví, Naše Povinnost”—“Our Language, Our Heritage, Our Duty” to convey a sense of unity with the Czech population of Texas. As the project director is himself a Texas Czech, he feels a sense of duty to the language of his forebears. This has produced an impressive outpouring of community support and encouragement, and Mr. Tomeček has found fertile soil in the prospects of preserving the language. Indeed, after having given a number of public speeches on the topic at various ethnic society meetings, he is preparing to launch an initiative to establish “Czech School” for Texas Czech youth in the communities. These classes are being conceived to be taught on Sundays in churches and community centers across Czech Texas. It is hoped that through education of the youth, use of the language will flow from creating a peer group with whom they can use this language. This in turn will strengthen the ties of the community that have become weak in our modern world. It is the hope and mandate of the Czech people in Texas that their langauge not die with them. As one speaker put it to Mr. Tomeček, “My grandkids, they can learn that European Czech any

time, but they won’t. We both know that. The only way it will happen is if they grow up speaking it, and they ought to talk like we do.” The Texas Czech Dialect Project is seeking the help of the Texas Czech community to realize their goals of preserving this unique variety of Czechs, born and raised in Texas for future generations. Many Texas Czechs have heard or think that their Czech is wrong, slang, or trash Czech. This could not be more wrong! The Czech spoken is Texas is the very last place in the world that this older variety of Czech is preserved. This older form has many unique elements that no longer exist in Europe. Not only one dialect of such great importance, but many, from all across the Czechspeaking lands exist here. We in Texas are fortunate to have such a heritage and should be proud of our Czech. Once we lose it here, however, it will be gone forever. While the project director comes from the community of Schwertner, at Corn Hill, the help of the statewide community in finding willing speakers of Texas Czech who will share with the project their language and help save this great heritage is needed. Since the project does not only involve the Czech language in speech, but also in written word and cultural items, anyone who can contribute originals or copies of old newspapers, letters, or other documents is doing a great deal. Even things such as the knowledge of how to make or do things that were dear to our people, like sausage, bread, or kolaches are of great value and interest to the project. Without the help of this hardworking, faithful people, the work of preserving the language and culture simply cannot be done. Tell your neighbors, family, friends, and church congregations that Czech in Texas can be saved, but we all have to roll up our sleeves and get to work, just like our grandparents did. With enough work, the unique way of speaking Czech that exists in Texas will be saved, and it is very possible that today’s youth will be able to grow up knowing Czech the same way that their ancestors did. —SPJST—

Some frequently asked questions about the Texas Czech Dialect Project (TCDP)
What kinds of questions do interviewers ask? Interviewers try to ask questions that will produce casual, relaxed conversation. This usually involves questions about topics ranging from childhood games to current activities. Since our major focus is on what people are interested in as they talk, we focus on getting people to talk about thier favorite topics. If you have a story to tell, by all means, don’t be shy! We love to listen. Why do they need to tape record the interview? The interviews need to be tape recorded because the interviewers are interested in many aspects of the community’s language, not just in hearing one or two unusual pronunciations or a new word. We can’t listen for all the different features we’re interested in all at once — and pay attention to what’s being said — without making a tape that we can go back and listen to as many times as we need to. One of our main goals is to paint as accurate a picture of the language as possible; tape and video recordings help us ensure that the descriptions we develop are based on real-life language use and not on vague impressions. What exactly do the interviewers do with the interview? We go through each interview in order to describe exactly how different structures pattern. We also com-

pare different language items across different groups of speakers within a community. For example, we may look at how a particular type of sentence structure or even a single vowel is produced by older people, middleaged people, and younger people to see how the language is changing over time. Some of the things that can be done with a tape recording are pretty amazing. For example, we can isolate a vowel in a particular word and enter it into a computerized program that measures exactly the physics of the sound waves that result in a particular production. The idea behind all the analysis is to describe honestly and exactly how Texas Czech works. Who listens to the interview? The only people who listen to the interviews do so under John Tomecek’s direction. Special permission must be granted by the interviewer if the interview is to be used by anyone else for any other purpose. Taped interviews are given coded labels and stored in a locked office to further protect the the privacy of each interviewee. When parts of interviews are used for educational purposes such as academic conferences, class presentations, or for presentation over the Internet (for wider accessibility), the privacy of interviewees is guaranteed.
torical preservation efforts. We will share this with local schools, preservation societies, and museums that are concerned with preserving cultural heritage through language. Furthermore, we will put together an archival tape collection of selected descriptions, narratives, and oral histories for these institutions. We hope eventually to set up a central location within Texas where these kinds of materials can be preserved for future generations. Additionally, plans are already underway for an internet archive of Texas Czech newspaper sstretching as far back as 1880, so that the community can use these wonderful resources that until now have been reserved for scholars. It is hoped that in time, programs to educate young and old alike in speaking the Czech language will be established as a final phase of this work. —SPJST—
What good does the interview do for the community? We are very concerned with sharing the knowledge that we get from communities with them. In fact, a critical part of our project involves working with communities to celebrate their language traditions. We do this in several ways. For example, we will write a popular account of the Texas Czech dialect that can be used in his-

The Origin of Veterans Day
OUR VETERANS
CELEBRATE
In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triumph). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as “Armistice Day”. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was “the War to end all Wars,” November 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. Sixteen and one-half million Americans took part. Four hundred seven thousand of them died in service, more than 292,000 in battle. Armistice Day Changed To Honor All Veterans Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of World War II and Korea, Congress was requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. On Memorial Day 1958, two more unidentified American war dead were brought from overseas and interred in the plaza beside the unknown soldier of World War I. One was killed in World War II, the other in the Korean War. In 1973, a law passed providing interment of an unknown American from the Vietnam War, but none was found for several years. In 1984, an unknown serviceman from that conflict was placed alongside the others. To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, The 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil. A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978, Congress returned the observance to its traditional date. National Ceremonies Held at Arlington The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb. The nation’s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays “taps.” The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater. Every year, the President of the United States urges All Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate public ceremonies.
