SPJST Sponsors First-Ever Czech Feszt in Temple ISSN —07458800

Celebration of Czech heritage. Food. Music. Activities for all ages. Friends. Fraternal fun. Those elements combined created a successful first-ever Czech Feszt in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, November 3, 2007. More than 5,000 people attended the event held in downtown Temple at the Community Market and Santa Fe Depot grounds. The event was a partnership between the City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly

the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum). The city’s Parks and Leisure Services Department hoped to create a fall festival to promote tourism in the area, while the Czech Heritage Museum hoped to raise awareness for Czech heritage and funding for the museum. SPJST sponsored Czech Feszt and coordinated and conducted several of the activities. The day kicked off at 10 a.m. with the Czech Feszt Pageant and Kolache Baking Contest. A Progressive 42

Domino Tournament was held later in the Santa Fe Depot. The Pig Scramble began at 1 p.m. Bands performing included Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six; Vrazels Polka Band; Texas Polka Authority; Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen; and The Bobby Flores Band. The gazebo also featured cultural entertainment throughout the day including the SPJST District Two Beseda Dancers, St. Mary’s Czech Choir, and Dr. Michael Middleton, awardwinning accordionist. Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) set up displays and books, and members were available to assist with genealogical research throughout the day in the Santa Fe Depot. A parade of Czech costumes was held at 3 p.m. Vendors offered food and arts and crafts throughout the day. The 2008 Czech Feszt is planned for Saturday, October 18 in downtown Temple. Contest results and photos appear on pages 4 and 5. Stay tuned to next week’s Vestnik for more photos from the event. —SPJST—

New historical novel tells story of intrepid Czech-Moravian immigrants to Texas

Mary Frances Chupick Bennett pens “From European Tyranny to Freedom to Civic War”

In her new historical novel, “Invitation to Cat Spring: From European Tyranny to Freedom to Civil War” (published by Author House), Lodge 164, Rio Hondo member Mary Frances Chupick Bennett tells the largely unknown story of the intrepid Czech-Moravian people who left their ancestral home amid the turmoil of the midnineteenth century only to arrive in an equally tumultuous Texas on the brink of civil war. Of Czech-Moravian heritage herself, Bennett draws on written and oral stories, doc- Mary Frances Chupick Bennett of Lodge 164, Rio Hondo uments, legends, traditions, and customs to craft this inspiring story, which has been praised by reviewers: (Please see Invitation on page 21.)

Czech Feszt Success

ny time we plan a first-ever event, we are never sure what is going to happen. Will everything turn out okay? What did we forget to do? What did we not even think about doing? But, above and beyond all those detail questions, is the most worrisome question: Will anyone show up? I think all of us on the Czech Feszt Committee worried about the attendance at one point or another during the past five months of planning. Our minds were certainly at ease when the day arrived, and there were people—lots of people— everywhere. It was so amazing. Approximately 5,000 to 7,500 people attended the first-ever Czech Feszt. SPJST was the big sponsor, and many Home Office personnel and lodge members proudly assisted during the day. Thank you to all of our members who attended. Thanks, too, to all of those who participated in the SPJSTsponsored events at Czech Feszt. Those included the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament, Pig Scramble, Kolache Baking Contest, Mr. and Miss Czech Feszt Pageant, and Parade of Czech Costumes. So many people told me that they saw the Czech Feszt promotions in the Vestnik. That’s great. Stay tuned to more Vestniks for lots more photos from this exciting event. And, make plans for next year—Saturday, October 18, 2008. Believe it or not, we are already in the planning stages for another awesome event! Mental Challenge! Thanks to all who inquired about the mental challenge in last week’s Vestnik: There is a bus with 7 girls. Each girl carries 7 bags. Inside each bag there are 7 cats. Every cat has 7 kittens. All cats have 4 legs

each. Question: How many legs are in the bus? Answer: Number of cats with one girl is 392. Number of cats with 7 girls is 2,744. Total legs of cats is 10,976. Grand total (with 14 legs of 7 girls) and the answer is 10,990. Congratulations to everyone who came up with that answer. Wasn’t that fun! Let’s Say Thanks From District Two Fraternal Activities Coordinator and Fraternal Department Assistant Ruth Hanusch: Here is a Web site to send a card to our troops: www.letssaythanks.com It’s a neat site that allows you to pick a card and send a message to our troops. Thanks, Ruth, for sharing. Premium Refunds Discontinued Over the course of the past 10 months, many SPJST certificate holders received a letter informing them that the SPJST had discontinued premium refunds on a certain block of life insurance certificates. As a result of these actions, the Supreme Lodge received notice recently from its actuary that the block of business which had been in question no longer represented a long-term liability concern for the SPJST. At the 1968 Convention, delegates responded to the Society’s strong cash position by authorizing the Supreme Lodge to refund a portion of the surplus back to the members. This was done in the form of a premium refund program. The refunds were to be issued in cash. Then, in 1986, the refund could be used to purchase additional paid-up insurance. The premium refund was issued to that block of business which had been written prior to 1968, and it continued to those certificates written as late as the mid-1980s. These insurance certificates — when they were written — were not designed nor were they priced to pay dividends. The action that was taken by the 1968 Convention was justified as an expression of appreciation from the Society to its members for their years of devotion. For the next 38 years, the premium refund program was allowed to continue. Over that time period, approximately $18 million in premium refunds and/or paid-up insurance were issued by the Supreme Lodge. In October 2006, the SPJST Supreme Lodge was advised by its actuary that the Supreme Lodge needed to discontinue the premium refund program for the simple reason that the practice could no longer be financially justi-

fied simply on the basis of goodwill extended by the Supreme Lodge to its members. As previously stated, when these older certificates were issued, they were not priced to pay a dividend. Looking back, hindsight is 20/20. Indeed, it would have been better in 1968 to have issued the premium refunds and/or paid up additions for a defined period of time; however, that was not done and an open-ended program as was established and permitted to go on for 38 years. From an actuarial standpoint, every life insurance product that the SPJST issues — whether it be term or whole life — each certificate is designed and priced to stand upon its own merits. An amount is priced into the sale of each certificate to account for the Society’s operating expenses, including fraternal programming. In December 2007, the final letters will go out to members informing them of the discontinuation of the premium refund program. In every case, its important for holders of these older certificates to know that this change in procedure does not effect their life insurance certificate’s face value. Indeed, as many who have contacted the SPJST Home Office on this matter have learned, the paid-up additions that they have been receiving over the past 38 years have added significantly to the face value of their coverage. Thanks to our generations of members who were affected by this recent correction in company policy. Your continued commitment and dedication to the SPJST is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions relating to this matter or its resolution, please do not hesitate to call the SPJST Home Office. We look forward to serving you! —SPJST—

Czech Feszt • Saturday, November 3, 2007 • Temple, Texas

From the Supreme Lodge President Dear Brothers and Sisters, Wow. That was fun! Thanks to everyone — from the event coordinators, lodges, youth clubs, vendors and volunteers to the more than 5,000 men, women, boys and girls — who joined together on Saturday, November 3 to make Temple’s premier Czech Feszt a success. Temple’s Community Market and the adjacent Santa Fe Gardens provided an enjoyable backdrop for last Saturday’s daylong cultural celebration. Special thanks to the City of Temple for being the driving force in establishing the Czech Feszt and to Festival Co-Chairs Anna Foster of Temple Parks and Leisure Services and Sandi Wicker of the Czech Heritage Museum. SPJST is honored to have been an inaugural partner in this project. We applaud the efforts taken by the City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum to enhance,

preseve and encourage a greater awareness of Czech history and culture. Temple and the surrounding area has an extraordinarily rich history filled with many interesting people, places and events. Our heritage is our legacy from the past. It’s what we learn from; it’s what we live with and it’s what we hope to pass on to future generations. Events like last Saturday’s Czech Feszt enable us to celebrate our cultural diversity while they bring us together as a community. Again, thanks to everyone for a job well done! We look forward to a long and beneficial relationship with the City of Temple and Czech Heritage Museum in producing many happy celebrations to come. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

From the Czech Heritage Museum

Words cannot express my appreciation for the City of Temple Parks and Recreation Department and its desire to honor the Czech heritage and customs with Czech Feszt. We are blessed with a large Czech population in Bell County, and this event was a wonderful way to highlight some of the traditions of the people who mean so much to the history of Texas. Anna Foster, Events Coordinator for the City of Temple, was great to work with in establishing Czech Feszt as a Temple tradition, and Michael Morris did an exceptional job of lining up entertainment for the event. We had a committee that has worked hard for several months to conceptualize a festival with “home-town” appeal and to offer good old-fashioned activities that were reminiscent of activities enjoyed by Czech communities for years. I also have to thank the many, many people who volunteered their time to help make

this event such a success and all of the vendors who had faith in us that they would be successful at our “party.” We were blessed to not only have the City of Temple support this effort, but for SPJST to be a major sponsor and for many of its employees to volunteer hundreds of hours to make it special and fun. We could not have had a pig scramble, Mr. and Miss Czech Feszt pageant, Progressive 42 tournament, or a kolache bake-off without them. Also, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society was on hand to help many people with Czech roots with their genealogical research. Dignitaries from all over the state came to participate. And, God blessed us with a perfect day. Mark October 18, 2008, on your calendar for the next Czech Feszt. You will be glad that you did! Sandi Wicker CHM Executive Director —SPJST—

Lodge 48, Beyersville Hosts Successful Progressive 42 Tournament The Lodge 48, Beyersville Annual Progressive 42 Domino Tournament was held at the lodge hall on October 20, 2007. There were 48 players competing for top honors. The contestants were welcomed with new tables with Formica tops that were made by District Two Director Bobby Wuensche. Dragging his heels was last year’s winner John Wuensche. He held on very tightly to the traveling trophy. I think that a tear may have fallen, but words of encouragement were heard by all when Brother Wuensche vowed to take it back home again. Play began promptly at 9:15 a.m. Sister Colleen Jenke helped Director Wuensche with tabulations and other paperwork duties. After four rounds of play, a short intermission was enjoyed where everyone had an opportunity to sample some great desserts that were donated by the attendees. Another four rounds were battled before a break for the noon meal. The traditional feast of turkey and dressing, ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, and rolls had the savory aroma filling the entire hall. The meal was prepared by Carol’s of Thorndale. Helping in the kitchen was the tireless team of Doris Wiesner, Donna Mahac, Alice Wuensche, Ruth Ann Wuensche, and Denisse Wuensche. Thanks so very much to these ladies

many leaders—but they all knew only one of them could be tops. Finally, the last three rounds began. Around 3:30 p.m., we were finished playing. Then, the anticipation of the finality of the day was drawing near. Demetra was reminded that should she not be able to fill the stringent rules of remaining champion (no bad publicity for spitting in public, appearing in well-known magazines, taking candy from babies, etc.!), that first prize would have to go to resident bachelor Jimmy Turek. Although John could not take the traveling trophy home, he did get a trophy. Jimmy is also a repeat winner and way to go girlfriend Demetra. She showed the guys how to really play dominoes, and she has such a gentle spirit, too. Congrats to all of the winners. I think that everyone had tons of fun. The Longhorns won, so all in all, it was one happy day. We had the pleasure of having our friends from Ennis, Texas, join us. We hope that Ronnie and Jim had a safe trip back home. We also had Lodge 18, Elgin members Aleen Jaecks and Evelyn Gustafson join us. We had so many of our regulars that it is hard to name them all, but we are so glad that you all support us every year. We hope to see you again at next year’s tournament.

Their wedding dance took place back at Lodge 88 where they first met, and they have been dancing together ever since. Rudy and Celestine live in Houston. They have eight children, 35 grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren. Invitation

Continued from Page 1.

“After reading Invitation to Cat Spring, I knelt and thanked God one more time for bringing my ancestors to America. Emotionally rewarding, stirring, poignant, touching. A his—Melanie torical treasure.” Zavodny, Editor of Vestnik, weekly publication of the SPJST. “I would recommend this book as required reading for students who are taking Texas History.” —Retta Slavik Chandler, President, Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center. Invitation to Cat Spring opens in the Czech lands, where virtual serfdom under the Hapsburgs has gripped the people for generations. Famine, epidemics, religious intolerance and forced military service add to the unrest. In the mid 1800s, letters arrive from Cat Spring, Texas, America, telling of unbelievable freedom and opportunity. Rozina and her family decide to leave Moravia and take their chances. After crossing Europe by foot, wagon, and train, they make the arduous sea voyage to their new home, braving unbelievably crowded conditions, hunger, storms, sickness and death. As the family begins to earn a meager living and adjust to its adopted homeland, civil war looms. The family doesn’t speak English. They oppose slavery and are against secession. When Texas joins the Confederacy, difficult choices must be made. Two sons join the Confederate forces and find themselves involved in the Battle of Galveston, the largest Civil War battle fought on Texas soil. Another avoids the military, choosing instead to haul cotton to Mexico—a more hazardous undertaking than he can possibly imagine. Follow the story of these Moravian immigrants as they struggle to make a new life in an unknown, dangerous land. Will they ever feel like “real Texans,” or will unforgiving circumstances force them to pack up and move on once again?

Invitation to Cat Spring, a finalist in the 2003 Writers’ League of Texas manuscript contest, is Ms. Bennett’s first book. More information is available at www.invitationtocatspring.com. AuthorHouse is the premier book publisher for emerging, self-published authors. For more information, please visit www.authorhouse.com. About the Author Mary Frances Chupick Bennett was born in La Grange, Texas, grew up and graduated from high school in Fayetteville, Texas (sometimes referred to as the “Cradle of Texas Czechs). In her youth, it was common to hear Czech spoken on the streets of the towns in the area. It was often the language in which family members spoke to each other, some church services were conducted, and certain business transacted. What today would be considered “ethnic food,” was common fare. Mary Frances’ father served as Supreme Lodge Secretary from 1940 to 1960 with the Czech fraternal life insurance company SPJST which, at that time, required literacy in the Czech language of all its employees. She grew up on Moravian stories, legends and fairy tales. Listening to the older members of her family, she learned of the hardships her ancestors had endured both in the “old country,” and again, in establishing themselves as “Americans.” Gratitude for their sacrifice, pride in heritage and appreciation of country was important. After graduation from The University of Texas at Austin, she married, moved with her husband during his stint in the United States Army, and then spent most of the years that followed in Weslaco, Texas. She taught school there for a number of years. During that time, she was instrumental in erecting a monument to the Iwo Jima Flag Raisers, one of whom, Harlon Block, was a hometown hero. She was named “Teacher of the Year” for the district by her colleagues.

Upon retirement, she became increasingly aware that the story of the early Texas Moravian/Bohemian immigrants had not been fully told. Discussing this with a retired college professor, he chided her for neglecting the documents, books, and oral stories left by her amateur-historian father. The professor proclaimed, “If you don’t tell it, it will be lost. Quit talking and start writing.” She took his advice and joined the Kerrville Writers’Association. After several years of research, workshops, classes, travel, and interviews, the manuscript was born. It placed in the finals of the 2003 Writers’ League of Texas Manuscript Contest. She and her husband now live in the Hill Country of Texas. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
