Snow Much Fun!

he past three weeks have been absolutely amazing. David and I have had the privilege to deliver the SPJST Floats to many Christmas parades across the state. Thanks to the wonderful members at Lodges 4, Hallettsville; 30, Taiton; 154, Fort Worth; 180, Burleson; 239, Hondo; 240, Bay City; and 258, Seguin. We sincerely appreciate you all and your support. A big thanks to District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar and husband Leroy for the homecooked food during the back-toback parades in Bay City and El Campo. It’s a given that Karen, along with District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and wife Kathy will be at the parades in District Six. We love that! Thanks for the support. Float driver Jason Koliha and wife Faith also report great experiences with the members of Lodges 18, Elgin; 29, Taylor; 189, BryanCollege Station; and 183, Arlington. Thanks! Float I features a woodland Christmas theme with pine trees, deer, a snowman, a grizzly bear, a smoking fireplace, cocoa, and s’mores. Float II carries out the “Christmas is . . . Snow Much Fun” theme with singing penguins, icemen, and ice skating snowmen. The big hit on Float II is actual snow that surrounds the float as it passes the crowds. Both floats have received numerous awards at the parades. The awards are always nice, but it’s the smiles and Christmas cheer that we love to see when the float travels down the street. I received two very special letters this week about the float.

Dear Melanie, I just want to thank you and David for all your time and hard work you put into the Temple Christmas parade. The floats were absolutely beautiful! What an honor to have one of the floats especially for the “District Two Beseda Dancers.” It came as such a surprise to me and everyone. Thank you so much. All of the outfits you all wore were just great. You made the parade so much fun! Words can never thank you enough. All of the kids and parents just loved it all. Thanks again. Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor Dear Melanie and David, SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson, wants to thank you again for bringing the float to the Burleson, Texas, 2007 Texas Christmas Parade. All of the parade riders had a great time on the float. It was truly our pleasure to wave to the parade watchers/spectators, wish all of them a Merry Christmas, and to hear their responses as to what a great, beautiful float we were riding on. You did a magnificent job as you have done in years’ past. It was also very thrilling to win first place in the parade. And, what a nice way to begin the Christmas season. We thank you again and all of the responsible people from the Home Office of SPJST for letting this happen. Thanks again for everything you do for our organization. Bill and Carole Slavik Lodge 180, Burleson —SPJST—

Silver and gold garlands were added to the tree as they became available. Gingerbread cookies, cut in the shapes of Wise Men, stars, bells and fish, were decorated with colored icing.

In the days of no electricity, clipon candle holders held candles that were small, round, and the thickness of a pencil. Candles were placed from the top to about halfway down the tree so small children could not reach them. The candles were lit with a match for a short time, usually at night, by the parents who watched so a fire would not start and burn the house down. As the candles burned on the tree, the nighttime prayers were said. Christmas carols were sung when guests visited. —SPJST—

Section Lodge 24, Cyclone youth highlights fun activities Dear Readers, On Friday night, November 30, 2007, I baked a ton of cookies for our lodge’s bake sale. I had swim practice the morning of the bake sale, but my youth leader said everything sold well. Saturday afternoon, December 1, I saw a Let It Snow, Christmas Show, Radio featuring Christmas in Redrock at the Salado Silverspur Theatre with my friend. I laughed a lot! It put me in a holiday mood. On Sunday, December 3, I went to church with my mom. Then, we went to the Lodge 47, Seaton Christmas party. We danced the beseda and ate turkey and candy. Everything was so good! The Temple parade on Monday night, December 3 was so much fun— even though the snowman on the float kept trying to steal my blanket! The float was gorgeous, and all the refreshments at the SPJST Home Office were very good. The accor-

Oh, and our first swim meet at our very own Belton swim center was on Thursday, November 29. It was a double dual with Copperas Cove and LBJ. I helped sing the National Anthem then placed first in my heat in the 100 breastroke. I also took off half a second off my 50 free which was a little disappointing as I had hoped to take off two. Holiday Fun: Gingerbread Men Many a favorite family tradition come the holiday season starts in the kitchen. Among the more popular and traditional choices is Gingerbread Men. Those hosting a party this season can use the following recipe for “Gingerbread Men” courtesy of Sara Perry’s “Holiday Baking” (Chronicle Books). Gingerbread Men Makes About 2 Dozen 5 1/2-inch Cookies 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1/4 cup firmly packed light or dark brown sugar 1 egg 1/2 cup light or dark molasses

1. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, then lightly whisk and set aside. 2. In a stand mixer set on medium speed, beat the shortening until creamy, about 30 seconds. On medium speed, beat in the brown sugar until light and lump free. Beat in the egg until well blended, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as necessary. Beat in the molasses until blended. Turn off the mixer, add half the flour mixture, and beat on low speed until blended. Add the remaining flour and beat until blended. 3. Using lightly floured hands, gather the sticky dough into a ball. Divide the ball in half and flatten each portion into a 6- to 8-inch disk. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours or until firm. 4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly and set aside. 5. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and, if needed, soften slightly for easier handling. Roll it out 1/8 inch thick on a lightly floured board, between 2 sheets of parchment paper or heavy-duty plastic wrap, or on a pastry cloth with a cloth-covered rolling pin. 6. Lightly dip a 51/2-inch gingerbread man cookie cutter into flour, then firmly press it straight down into the dough. Repeat, cutting the cookies close together to avoid rerolling. Using a spatula, carefully transfer the cookies to the baking sheet. If a cookie is to be used as an ornament, press a hole through the top with a drinking straw or a large skewer. 7. Bake until the cookies are lightly browned, 9 to 11 minutes. Let the cookies firm and cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring to a rack to cool completely. If desired, decorate the cookies with icing and decorative candles. —SPJST—

Interment followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville. Opal was born November 12, 1913, on Snake Creek near Needville, Fort Bend County, to Ralph B. and Sallie Snedecor McCauley. She lived there until she was about 12 years old. She then moved with her family to Iowa Colony near Alvin. They only resided there about two years when they almost starved to death as Opal stated. They then moved back to Fort Bend County where her father went to work for Mr. Moore and lived on his property. She met and married Louis at the age of 16 on November 27, 1927, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville. Together, they reared four children in Needville. All four of their children were also married in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Needville, and Opal remained an active member of the church her entire life. She was a lifetime member of the Needville P.T.A. and a 75year member of the United Presbyterian Women. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 81,

Czech Christmas Traditions by David Creighton From Prague.TV December 1, 2004 (updates October 31, 2007)

Despite creeping commercialism, old favorites like Mikuláš, carp and cookies survive and thrive.

Czech Christmas: the pernicious influence of Santa, and the season start in October.

The Czechaholics proudly announce their new CD release

Ješte Jednou (One More Time)

Growing Up on the Farm

Not what you wanted to hear but, unfortunately, globalization is making Christmas in the Czech Republic just like anywhere else. Czechs, however, seem to have been spared the fast track to insanity offered by Slade’s mindlessly stupid Merry Xmas Everybody being played as soon as they set foot inside a shop from Halloween onward – so far, at least. But don’t worry – the essential traditions of Czech Christmas continue, despite the advent of shopping malls and piped carols. For one thing, part of the attraction of a Czech Christmas is that some of the clichés pictured on Christmas cards actually do bear a resemblance to reality. Snow is a possibility, and even at the rather fake Olde Worlde market in Old Town Square, the heart of Prague’s tourist mayhem, the scene is enough to make even the most heartless cynic get a little sentimental. As in other countries, Christmas in the Czech Republic happens in two distinct stages: the first part coming at the beginning of December, around St. Nicholas Eve, and the second on December 24, when families get together to celebrate the main Christmas event. The season kicks off on December

Threesomes representing an angel, a devil (or more commonly these days, a devil and a devil) and St. Nicholas, a figure dressed up as a bishop, with old cotton wool for a beard, are found tramping round neighborhoods looking for children to interrogate about their behavior over the last year. Sweets are at the ready, although judging by the pictures of terrorized toddlers in the papers each year, child psychologists might be more appropriate. Frightened children apart, it’s an enjoyable occasion, not least for cotton wool producers and companies that manufacture flashing illuminated devil horns. Christmas fever continues to gain momentum after St. Nicholas has

done his rounds, and the focal point of Czech Christmas is December 24. The Christmas tree is decorated in the afternoon, and in the evening, whole families get together to enjoy the Christmas meal. The meal traditionally involves carp, that unfortunate fish you see being butchered by men in overalls on street corners. Carp is usually fried in breadcrumbs, and walking through the streets early on Christmas Eve, when everyone is frying at the same time, Prague smells like a giant fish and chip shop. This is particularly noticeable if you walk through an area of paneláks, when the smell of simultaneous frying from several hundred apartments can be almost overwhelming. Some people eschew breadcrumbs, and many Czech families will tell you

their special way of preparing the fish is the best. Such family pride, and arguments about the best way to cook the fish show how carp seems to elicit fanatical devotion and loathing in equal measure. I never previously realized that a fish could arouse such passions, though it’s not that surprising, I suppose, given that many people end up in hospital each year with fish bones stuck in their throats. There’s no sitting on the fence when it comes to carp. After tasting it myself, I’m firmly against it - you might as well feed me with wallpaper paste. On the upside, the fish is accompanied by potato salad, which definitely does get my vote - but it has to be homemade. The version you get in the shops just isn’t the same. After the meal, it’s time for everyone to leave the room. Then a bell is rung and everyone comes back in to find their presents, which have materialized under the tree. As elsewhere, December 25 and 26 are holidays, too, and it’s a lazy time, with not much happening until New Year’s Eve, which many Czech people spend in the mountains.

After the holidays things go back to normal, but it’s not quite back to normal - there’s a fair chance that the remaining Christmas sweets, those intricate little pastries (vánoční cukroví) which every housewife seems to make in industrial quantities, will make a last-gasp appearance. Colleagues come in to work bearing these ubiquitous delicacies and try to foist them on you. Soon the workplace is awash with them, as everyone has the same idea. There are boxes of them, and boxes and boxes. People look sheepish, wondering if they’ll be the one who pushes the whole office over the edge simply because nobody can face any more of the things . . . Once they’ve gone you feel a little sad, though, and then it dawns on you that Christmas is truly and finally over. —SPJST—
