Lodge 107, Floresville youth gives to Locks of Love
Dear Readers, This past Friday, we had the day off from school. My mom and I decided that is the day we would go to the beauty shop to get our hair cut. My mom has always wanted to donate her hair to Locks of Love. When she explained to me what Locks of Love was about, I wanted to donate my hair, too. Irene sectioned the hair into four ponytails, she braided each one, and then she cut each braid. When I saw how short my hair was, I almost cried. I have not had my hair “officially” cut because Mom would always trim it at home. Irene told me I was not just a princess—but a special princess. That made me feel better. To the boy or girl who gets our hair, their dream is also coming true. If it is a girl, I hope she enjoys putting her hair into ponytails or curling her hair as much as I have. I have told my mom that I would like to grow my hair long again so I can donate it and help more kids. See more pictures on page 23. Fraternally, Brooke Henke, age 5 —SPJST—

Charles Schwab, the president of a steel mill, met with an efficiency
consultant named Ivy Lee. Schwab wanted to increase productivity in his mill. Lee told Schwab he had an idea that would improve his management of the company, but Schwab was not interested. Schwab said he just wanted to know how to get more done in the time available—and he was willing to pay anything to get that information. Lee told Schwab that he could help him increase productivity by 50 percent if Schwab would give him 20 minutes. Schwab agreed. Lee gave Schwab a piece of paper and told Schwab to write down the six things that he felt were most important to get done the following day. Schwab complied. Then Lee instructed him to order these six items from most important to least important. Lee told Schwab to keep the list until the next morning, then Schwab was to look at the first item and work on it until it was accomplished. When that was done, he was to work on the next item. Lee told Schwab not to worry about the items on the list that he could not get done. Lee
instructed Schwab to make the list and work on the items every day. The efficiency consultant also advised Schwab to allow his employees to try this method, and then to send him a check for whatever he thought the idea was worth after he had had enough time to assess it. In a few months Lee received a check for $25,000, along with a letter praising the idea. The idea was given credit for turning Schwab’s small steel mill into the big, thriving Bethlehem Steel. —adapted from The Time Trap by Alec Mackenzie

They remain members of SPJST with all the privileges and benefits of the active members but are not required to pay any dues or assessments. The 2009 honorees are listed below:

Dear Readers, The last meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone was held on Monday, January 12, 2009. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde. Members stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence for deceased members. We would like to pay our respects to the families of Lillian Elsik and Mary Vrazel. It is extremely hard to lose a loved one, but with the help of God, family and friends, may everyone’s pain heal soon. the members for the plaques she and Robert received at our Christmas party. They were truly surprised. I remember at the Christmas party, Brian asked Barbara to make a speech, and she was truly speechless. Hall Manager/Bar Chairman Wilbert Mikeska gave a very good bar report for 2008. Hopefully, 2009 will be just as good. Newly elected Vice President/FAC Shirley Hoelscher gave her report. Upcoming events are the state tarok tournament on February 7, at Lodge 29, Taylor; awards banquet will be in Killeen on February 21; on February 14, the fraternal bowling tournament will be held in Austin; the state straight domino tournament will be at Lodge 48, Beyersville on March 7; SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive ends March 31; and it is still a few months away, but we need to be thinking of plans for Join Hands Day which is May 2.
Congratulations to New Business Technician/Certificate Issue Technician Donica Zabcik for five years of service to the SPJST Home Office. She was recognized at the SPJST Supreme Lodge meeting on January 20, 2009. Donica was presented a watch by Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, right. Dear Vestnik, On behalf of the family of Shelton Bluhm, Sr. we want to express our sincere gratitude to Lodge 97, Placedo and RVOS who hosted a 50th birthday party at Tejas Cafe on August 24, 2008, in Victoria, Texas. (The pictures from my camera didn't turn out well so Karen Kaspar graciously sent me copies of hers). Shelton, Jr. was born with hydrocephalus which wasn’t diagnosed until he was 18 months of age. “Shel” was not expected to live long, but he has surpassed medical opinion. Thanks to modern medicine, great doctors, and very caring and diligent parents (Mom and Dad
never gave up on him), he has lived a full life and continues to work at VISD Maintenence after 33 years! You go, Shel! We are very proud of you and know Daddy was, too. Our father passed away September 14, 2006, but we know he was with us in spirit. News All 19 members of Mary Ann and Joe Kozel’s family had a winter holiday in December. They flew to Denver, Colorado, then drove to Keystone where they had a house rented and did some skiing. I hear that everyone went skiing except Mary Ann and one-yearold Madeline. Mary Ann said it has
been a long time since all the family members were together at one time, and they had a most enjoyable vacation. The group got back to Fort Worth, exchanged their Christmas gifts on the 24th, then all left to spend time with their other families. Congratulations go out to Anna Johnson on the arrival of a new greatgranddaughter Sklyar born to Anna’s granddaughter Melissa and husband Irvin Janak. Lodge 26 Skidmore member shares Czech influences
The United States of America and the Republic of Czechoslovakia have influenced the history of each other. President Woodrow Wilson was instrumental in making Czechoslovakia an independent Republic in 1918. In writing the Czech constitution, they used the United States of America constitution as a model. Many Czech people were already settled in the United States, and many more came later. Some of their descendants became famous. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and James Lovell are of Czech descent. Lovell was the commander of Apollo

In the film, “Apollo 13,” Lovell has a cameo as the captain of the USS Iwo Jima, the naval vessel which led the operation to recover the Apollo 13 astronauts after their successful splashdown. Lovell can be seen as the naval officer shaking Hanks’ hand, as Hanks speaks in voice-over, in the scene in which the astronauts come aboard the Iwo Jima. Eugene Cernan was lunar module pilot of Apollo 10 in May 1969; and as commander of Apollo 17 in December 1972. In that final lunar landing mission, Cernan became “the last man on the moon” since he was the last to reenter the Apollo Lunar Module before liftoff. Super Bowl Sunday touchdown
(MS) - Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner. Perhaps this year you want to open up your home and host a party in honor of the big game. The Super Bowl is one of the mostwatched sports games each year. Football fans and non fans alike gather in homes across the country either to watch the action play out on the field or comment on the best commercials that are unveiled. Therefore, apart from tasty snacks and beverages, there isn’t much needed to host a winning
football gathering. But if you want to make it extra-special, consider these football-friendly ideas. Upgrade your TV - If you’ve been thinking about updating your television to a newer, improved or larger model, now is the time. Very often stores discount products post-Christmas, and you may be able to get a deal right after the New Year starts. Other retailers offer discounts particularly for Super Bowl Sunday, so keep an eye out for advertised specials. Create your own “stadium seating” The object of setting up seating is to maximize the opportunity for unobstructed views of the game. While your

living room or recreation room may not be equipped with tiered home-theater seating, you can mimic the effect. In the back “row,” consider lifting the sofa up a couple of inches by placing sturdy pieces of wood or other materials under the feet. Folding chairs can form another row directly in front. Reserve shorter seating (i.e., low-profile beach or deck chairs, beanbag chairs, etc.) for the front. Set up pillows and other floor-based seating for younger fans. Think about food options - Food should be portable and easy to enjoy while cheering along. This makes finger foods particularly attractive for these types of events. You can serve

just about anything, just make it bite sized. For example, in lieu of regularsized pizza and calzones, consider pizza bagels or English muffin pizzas paired with mini-calzones made with refrigerated biscuit dough (you can even make them in the shape of footballs if you’re feeling very creative). Rather than messy hot wings, flavor breaded chicken tenders with hot sauce and other spicy seasonings. Serve the bulk of the food during a time when the action is on hiatus, such as halftime. For those who like to munch throughout the game, keep plenty of snack foods on hand. —SPJST—

I got a polar bear named Mr. Polar. We made stockings and stuffed candy in them for the nursing home. St. Nicholas came on December 6
to my house. I got pajamas, a dry eraser board, and scented hand sanitizer. The SPJST Youth Club went caroling at the IOOF Nursing Home and handed out stockings to the residents. We went to the IOOF Retirement Center, too. I sang in the school’s Christmas
play. I played a kazoo in the play. I went to the Christmas Sokol exhibition. We performed our gymnastic skills in front of our families and friends. We also performed a dance routine to Footloose. Even my little sister Misty performed a dance routine, and she wasn’t scared this time. I went to my little sister’s play for

Lodge 25, Ennis: past youth leader expresses thanks
Happy new year to youth club members, parents and grandparents of Lodge 25, Ennis! From December 2001 through December 2008, our youth club has grown from five members to 22 members! And, during this seven year timeframe, our club was represented three different years with state royalty—in 2002 by State King Jake Holland and State Duke Michael Jurik; in 2005 by State Queen Rachel Hunter and State Duchess Amanda Jurik; and in 2006 by State Queen Raychel Clark and State Duchess Madeline Clark. And, in 2007, Blake Ryan and Austen Holland captured the District Three King and Duke titles. Now that’s quite an accomplishment and really something I am proud of! Our youth represented the lodge at the state level several years in talent and arts and crafts at Youth Achievement Day. And, we were represented as top winners in the camp tee-shirt design contest; Christmas card design and Christmas tree ornament contests;
Texas Fraternal Congress essay and photography competitions; and State YAD scrapbook and poster contests. Several of our youth achieved state honors as top point winners. There are too many to mention individually but you know who you are, and I am so proud of you. You are all talented in a special way. Please keep up the great work! We also rallied together to make many contributions to the community: collecting Treats for Troops; eyeglasses and shoes for the needy; and pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House. We participated in Relay for Life; Join Hands Day, and let’s not forget about our annual Christmas caroling at the nursing home—just to mention a few. Please continue these good deeds that we started. I would like to especially thank my assistant youth leaders, Betty, Laure and Rita, for all their help. Their help made my job as youth leader much easier and a lot of fun. Thanks to all the moms and dads and grandparents for all the time you spent helping your children and grandchildren. A special thanks goes out to our adult Lodge 25 President Eugene Dolezal for his encouragement and always telling us before YAD, “Remember, if you don’t enter, you won’t win!” I am so proud of all of our youth and the achievements our youth club made during my term as youth leader. As of January 2009, I will no longer serve as youth leader of Lodge 25. Betty Macalik will keep our club on track with the many plans she has already in place to keep the club grow-
Lodge 84, Dallas youth: snowman fun
On December 14, 2008, Lodge 84 youth performed its Christmas program at the lodge. My brother recited a poem called “The Runaway Snowman.” Then, he and I together did a skit where I read “Ten Life Lessons from a Snowman.” He was a great sport and wore the snowman costume that my grandma made several years
ago. Then, he told his funny snowman joke: What is worse than Rudolph having a runny nose? Frosty with a hot flash. We had a bunch of fun putting together the program and ending with the nativity scene. Rachel McManus, age 13 —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth Tori Motley films in Dallas
Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club member Tori Motley had a chance to do what few teens in Ennis have done. She made a film with Jerome M. Sattler, a Diplomat in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology. Tori and one other student from the Dallas area were filmed for an educational video for the University textbooks. Tori and her mom arrived at the Sheraton Hotel in Dallas on Thursday morning to prepare for the filming. Tori said, “I was treated like royalty; I got to eat all kinds of fancy breakfast stuff and kept being asked if there was anything I needed.” After makeup, Tori was escorted into the filming room where the producer, Todd Johnson with Laureate Education, Inc., went over what was going to happen next. Asked if she was nervous during any of the commotion, Tori said, “No, it was fun and I want to do it

again the next time they have to do a filming.” Dr. Sattler and Tori sat across from each other at a table, and he gave her a small sample of the Intelligence Scale test, which will show students who are studying Psychology, the correct way to administer the test to their students. Tori is in the sixth grade at Ennis Sixth Grade Center. She is also a Girl Scout. Dr. Sattler publishes books that represent the cutting edge of clinical assessment of children and families. The books are designed for students in training as well as for practitioners and clinicians. He has won various awards for his work, including the Gold Medal for Life Achievements in the application of Psychology and the Senior Scientist Award of Division 16 of the American Psychological Association. —SPJST—

become a successful reader, but parents need to focus on this skill early on, from the time their children are babies. So says new research from the National Early Literacy Panel. As the organization that directed the research, the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) is providing free tips and activities for parents to practice with their kids. The National Early Literacy Panel analyzed more than 3000 studies on early childhood literacy to determine which critical skills lead to future academic success. “For the first time ever we’ve been able to identify early literacy skills that lead to later reading success,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder of the NCFL. “Now parents can use these skills to help hone their child's reading ability.” These key skills include alphabet knowledge; awareness of the individual sounds of words; rapid naming of letters, numbers, objects and colors; the ability to write, including a child writing his or her name; and oral language. The experts at the NCFL have translated these findings into everyday activities that parents can perform with young children: * Shower Your Baby With Words. Even though he may not understand, he stores the sounds. Soon he’ll be able to put sounds and words together and speak. Talk about what you and your child are doing throughout the day. For example, describe activities like changing your child’s diaper, feeding your child, or giving her a bath. * Words + Words = More Words! As your baby begins to speak, encourage him by adding extra words. For example, if your child points to his toy and says, “Truck,” add some words. “Yes, that's your big, red truck!”
* What Is This? Make a picture game using photos of things your child sees at home. Find pictures in magazines— chairs, teddy bears, foods, etc. Hand your child a picture and ask him if he knows what it is. When he says the word, have him find the object and lead you to it. This increases your child’s vocabulary and gives him practice using symbols.
VӖSTNÍK
* Reading and Sharing. Preschoolers aged three-to-five are ready to be your reading partner. Read books aloud, asking questions about what is happening in the story and the pictures.
* Rhyme Time. Read rhyming stories with pre-schoolers and recite nursery rhymes. Pause at the end of lines and let your child fill in the rhyming word. This encourages children to listen carefully to the different sounds.
* My Name Is Special! Children are fascinated by the letters in their names. Playing word games with these letters can get them learning about language. Write the letters on paper, cut them apart and put them in an envelope. Let your child pull out the letters and put them in order. Look for things in your home that start with that letter or the
first letter of her name.
* My ABCs. Look for ABC books that match your child’s interests — animals, foods, children’s names, machines. You can also help your child make her own alphabet book. You could start by looking for one picture for each letter in her name.
* Book Time. Point out the title and the illustration on the cover. Read the title and author’s name out loud. Let your child turn the pages. Follow along with the text, running your finger under words. Learning how books work are important steps toward learning to read. Dear Vestnik, I had fun riding in the Christmas parade in El Campo. It sure was cold! We all kept warm because my mom brought hand warmers for the kids who rode the float. It was my first time to ride in a parade as District Six Duchess. Stephanie was so pretty as our District Six Queen. My godmother Stephanie Mitchell, my brother Matthew, and my mom rode, too. Daddy watched us on the street. Ms.

All-terrain vehicles dangerous— especially for children
According to an ABCNEWS.com story by Elisabeth Leamy, riding an all-terrain vehicle can be fraught with danger—especially when it comes to children. There are about 740 deaths per year from ATVs—and 136,000 serious injuries. Currently there are approximately 7 million ATVs in the United States. What’s the biggest risk from the ATVs? The consumer Product Safety Commission says that it arises from children riding ATVs that are meant for adult use only. ATVs are powerful vehicles that can turn over easily when there is significant weight shift. About a quarter of the people who are killed in ATV accidents are children. —SPJST—

Tasty Czech Mousse Valentine’s Day recipes
It is quite common on Valentine’s Day, the
mid-winter celebration of romance and love, for sweethearts to exchange gifts of chocolate. Perhaps this tradition stems from chocolate’s reputation as an aphrodisiac. Or perhaps it stems from its sweet, creamy taste or its perceived ability to improve the taster’s mood. Whatever the reason, chocolate’s popularity continues, especially on this romantic occasion each year. Originally, chocolate was enjoyed and consumed in liquid form. The ancient Mayan and Aztec populations of what is now Mexico, Central America and the northern part of South America discovered cocoa beans thousands of years ago. They crushed the beans and mixed them with spices in hot water to make a bitter drink. The ancient Aztec king Montezuma drank liquid chocolate throughout the day to enhance his libido. Interestingly, women were not allowed to drink chocolate at this time. While Christopher Columbus was the first person to bring cocoa beans back from the New World, Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez was responsible for its success in Europe. After first tasting chocolate in the New World in 1519, Cortez brought cocoa beans to Spain, which built up an industry by creating cocoa plantations in its overseas colonies. The Spanish also adjusted the drink to suit European tastes by adding sugar, vanilla and wine, improving the bitterness of the Aztec recipe. By the early 17th century, chocolate consumption had spread throughout the elite and wealthy of Europe. It was also being added to food for the first time, such as rolls and cakes. And, by the mid-18th century, its price dropped enough to be widely affordable. Chocolate is often reputed to be an aphrodisiac. However, little scientific evidence confirms this, or the belief that chocolate makes people feel better. Scientists suggest that choco-
late’s effect on mood is psychological. But if chocolate tastes good and makes us feel good, regardless of the underlying reason, what a nice experience to share with your sweetheart this Va l e n t i n e ’s Day!
Chocolate Soufflé Melt: 2 tablespoons butter Stir in until blended: 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour In a separate saucepan, heat but do not boil: 1 cup milk 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, cut into pieces 1/3 cup sugar
2 cups milk 1/4 cup sugar 3 ounces grated sweet chocolate
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Chocolate Mousse Scald and stir in a saucepan over low heat:
Pour part of these ingredients over: 4 beaten egg yolks
Return the sauce to the pan. Stir the custard constantly over low heat until it thickens slightly. Do not overcook. You may strain it. Cool by placing the pan in cold water and then in the refrigerator. In a separate bowl, whip until stiff: 3/4 cup whipping cream
Add: 1 teaspoon vanilla
Fold the custard into the whipped cream mixture until well blended. Fill custard cups with the mousse. Chill thoroughly before serving, but do not expect it to become firm.
Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring constantly until well blended. Beat until light: 3 egg yolks
Beat part of the sauce into the yolks, then add the yolk mixture to the rest of the sauce and stir the custard over very low heat until the yolks thicken slightly. Cool the custard well. Add to the cooled chocolate mixture: 1 teaspoon vanilla Whip until stiff, but not dry: 3 egg whites
Fold them lightly into the cooled chocolate mixture. Bake in a soufflé dish set in a pan of hot water about 20 minutes or until firm. Serve at once with cream.
