Bowling Buddies Fraternal Fun The Fraternal Bowling Tournament is always a great opportunity to
see SPJST friends from across the state and from other fraternals. The tournament was held Saturday, February 14 in Austin. A total of 139 bowlers representing seven fraternals participated in the event that raised more than $2,000 for scholarships to be given to youth who are involved in Texas fraternal organizations. Thanks to the 61 SPJST bowlers who participated and the many fans who attended to cheer on the bowlers. Congratulations to the winners!
SPJST Awards Banquet The SPJST Awards Banquet was held this past Saturday, February 21 in Killeen. Our goal is to present all of the lodge, fraternal, sales, and youth winners in next week’s Vestnik. Congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks for your efforts to keep SPJST awesome! The Similarities Between Teenagers and Cats I love teenagers and cats! But, they are quite similar in a few ways. Enjoy! • No matter how many times you call them they won’t turn their heads to acknowledge you.
• They can both lie on the couch for hours without moving.
• They both display attitudes of complete and utter boredom no matter what you do or what you buy for them. • Try as you might, you can never make a teenager or a cat happy.
• As far as they are concerned, you are there merely to feed them. Otherwise, you should stay out of their way and quit interfering with their lives.
• They both wreck your furniture without apology.
• Both of them like to wander off at night in search of action. • Cats have nine lives; teenagers behave as if they do.
Be Careful What You Wish For One day six retired men sat in an apartment playing poker when one of them, Jack Murphy, lost $500 in a single hand. In shock, he clutched his chest and crumpled at the table— dead. Out of respect for their friend, the five others stood up as they continued playing. Eventually, one of the men looked around the table and said, “Boys, someone’s got to tell Jack’s wife what’s happened. Who will it be?” They decided to draw straws—and Jimmy Jones drew the short one. The other men were full of advice for Jimmy: “Be discreet,” “Be gentle,” “Don’t make a bad situation worse.” “Discreet. You don’t have to worry about that,” assured Jimmy. “I’m always discreet. Discretion is my middle name. Now let me out o’ here so I can get this done.” Jimmy went over to the Murphy home and knocked gently on the door. When Mrs. Murphy answered, Jimmy said, "I must tell you that your husband has just lost $500 playing poker and is afraid to come home." “Tell him to drop dead!” cried Murphy’s wife. “That I’ll do,” assured Jimmy. —SPJST—

SPJST Home Office gets a jump start on National Nutrition Month
SPJST Home Office employees participated in a health fair sponsored by Scott and White Hospital’s Wellness Division on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at the SPJST Home Office. Seven departments from the hospital offered health screenings and information on various topics. With great participation from Home Office employees, the event was a success. Local lodges seeking to deliver programming to their regular lodge meetings should consider the merits of having local health care
professionals make presentations at an upcoming meeting. Considering that March is National Nutrition Month, there’s no time like the present! National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme for March 2009 is “Eat Right.”

much. Jeanie remembers at the HeeHaw show several years ago when so many of our guests got stuck in the mud and had to be towed out. We have graveled the parking area since that time but could still use more. In old business, repairs have been made on the lights and on the faucets in the bathrooms. Painting is still coming up soon. The representative from the Historical Dance Hall Society, Steph McDougal, contacted President Williams by email and said that she had met with the Milam County Historical Society. Ms. McDougal informed the society of the urgent need for a new roof and for the entire electrical system to be replaced. She suggested that we put in for a grant to the commission’s Preservation Trust Fund. Then, when we receive the historical marker, we will be eligible to apply for a grant to the Texas Historical Commission. She also suggested that we have some fund-raisers with which she would be willing to help us. So as soon as we get the marker, we will be applying for these grants. President Williams stated that a tool company had contacted him for the use of our parking lot to sell a variety of tools. They are fully insured. This will bring in a little revenue for the lodge. Congratulations, Sister Hilda! We all congratulated our longtime member Hilda Burtis on her 93rd birthday on February 6. She received her 75-year pin several years ago. This year, we have three members who will be receiving their 50-year pins— Cheryl Massey, Gladys Svetlik, and Anton Vrazel, and one person to receive his 75-year pin—J.D. Ruzicka. The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held at the Killeen Civic Center on February 21. We will have five officers attending. We will be receiving an award for attaining the lodge’s membership quota. After the meeting was adjourned, door prizes were awarded and a delicious meal was served.

Fort Worth Friendship Club
The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for its meeting with 40 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Krivanek who welcomed everyone and thanked Joe Kozel for providing the music before the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and followed by a prayer “Be a Friend Today” read by Vice President Betty Krenek. Camille Bolcer was welcomed back after a long absence. She was looking as pretty as ever. Secretary Faith Lindeau read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. In the absence of Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan, the president read her report. Willie Mae had sent get well cards to Linda Horner, Alice Barnes, and Debbie Skrasek. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to February celebrants—Roy Alholm, Marie Grill, Mary Ann Kozel, and Shirley Martin. Pat McWilliams reported that member Irene Green was in ICU, and her son asked for our prayers. I am sad
to report that Irene passed away on February 9. It has been a sad month as member Roy Alholm passed away on February 15 just 11 days short of his 92nd birthday. Also, on the day of our meeting, Mary Schneider’s son-in-law Guy Walston died after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. May their souls rest in peace, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of these families. Mary Ann Kozel reported that her sister Martha Boenisch is doing well and is in a nursing home in Weatherford. Linda Horner is still in the hospital. Ann Sustala and Pauline Walker are still being missed as they have moved from the Fort Worth area and are on the sick list. Ima Lou Crider is also missed and is still living in a nursing home in Fort Worth. All of these ladies are longtime members who were so faithful in attending the meetings, and they are still missed. It was also learned that Tom Konen had surgery in Iowa, but is now home. His family asked for our prayers. President Mary Ann stated that hostesses for March will be Harold Balvin, Nettie Naugle, and Annie Whitsell. The next support of the St. Thomas Food Bank will be in April. Door prizes were brought by Anna Marie Moncrief and Rose Ann Spann with lucky winners being Mary Ann Krivanek and Agnes Reznicek. Faith Lindeau and Pat McWilliams were lucky winners of the 50-50 dollar games. February hostesses were Anna Marie Moncrief, Katherine Ormsbee, and Agnes Reznicek, and they did a super great job. All the tables carried out the valentine theme. Grace was led by Mary Ann Krivanek, a great luncheon was enjoyed, then games were played. As our former Secretary Merel Kovar used to say, “A good time was had by.”
News Helen Skrasek was the guest of her nephew Larry and wife Rhonda Janak at their country home near Round Top where they entertained two guests Honza Regner and his friend Jicka from the Czech Republic. Honza and Jicka couldn’t get over the sunny and balmy weather in Texas compared to the freezing temperatures they had back home. Larry and Rhonda served the traditional Texas barbecue, pivo and vino, along with accordion music. Other guests were Adele (Janak) and Harold Strand, Harold’s sister Margie Foster from Minnesota, Larry’s daughter Karen and fiance Dirk, and
VӖSTNÍK
Helen’s son Ron and wife Lee Anne Skrasek from Edmund, Oklahoma. The group then attended the last concert of the Vrazels’ Polka Band in Temple which they enjoyed very much. Helen said that she and her late husband Joe danced to many tunes played by the Vrazels. Last month, I wrote about attending the Carol Burnett Show at Bass Hall and learned that Joe and Mary Ann Kozel were also there. They, too, received their tickets as a gift. We all agreed that it was a good show. Everyone, mark your calendar. The International Sport and Cultural Festival will be held in Fort Worth June 23 to 28. The opening ceremony will be on Tuesday evening, June 23; the parade in downtown Fort Worth on Friday morning, June 26; and the closing program on Saturday evening, June 27. There will be special events all week with a social at the Stockyards with Brave Combo and Czech and Then Some performing, gymnastic competitions, bowling, golf, basketball, and many other events. Sokols from all over the United States and the Czech Republic will participate along with SPJST, USAG, Special Needs, and many other groups. Everyone is welcome to participate and attend. As Sokol Slim says, “It’s gonna be fun!” The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 4, and the president asked that everyone wear green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. See you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—
Fort Worth Ladies Circle
Our meeting opened at 10:45 a.m. with 48 members and one guest present. Marie Keller was our guest. Gloria Farek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. She also thanked Joe Kozel for his accordion music. Mary Ann Krivanek read a very nice reading entitled “Kindness.” The minutes were read, and they were a mess! After a few corrections, they were approved. Pauline Morbitzer gave the financial report. There were no questions. She then handed cards around for our signatures. One card was for Helen Kubala who was in the hospital. Another card was a sympathy to the family of Irene Green who passed away.

Her funeral was Thursday, February 12. The third card went to Theresa Clay. Joyce made an announcement on the hall activities. There will be a dance on Sunday, February 22 with music by Barefoot Becky, and Don Peachy will furnish the music on March 29. Our hostesses for a delicious lunch were Betty Loyd, Hermina Cihacek, Lorinda Manasco, and Pauline Morbitzer. At every February meeting, Corina Cranfill crowns a member “Valentine Queen.” This year, Sue Arnold was our 2009 Queen. Congratulations! She got a beautiful valentine basket. Speaking of valentines, Gloria gave everyone a heart made from a crisp $1 dollar bill. It was made up like Japanese origami. Charity Ellsworth also passed around packets of heart candy when she came in from school. Door prizes were won by Willie Mae Becan, Doris Overstreet, Pauline Morbitzer, Kathy Ormsbee, Jean Sparkman, Darlene Tomkins, Faith Lindeau, Mary Ann Kozel, Liz Howard, Wilma Perry, Betty Krenek, Joyce Tesar, and Shirley Martin. Grace was given by Mary Ann Krivanek. After lunch, we played bingo. Fraternally, Evelyn Scaff, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: not too busy February
Dear Vestnik Readers, I haven’t been too busy this month. I went to the February SPJST youth club meeting. It was fun. My mom was in charge of the games. We played bingo, and it was really fun. My mom was nice. Everyone got a prize. I got a yummy Butterfinger. We also played a blind-folded marshmallow game. It was a little bit weird. I think I was probably the first person with three marshmallows in my mouth, but I couldn’t swallow them fast enough to win. Hayley’s mom brought the snack. She brought some cookies and fruit. I took some kisses off the table. They were good. I haven’t been doing well. I fell off
the balance beam in gymnastics and now I am wearing a brace on my foot. I got it x-rayed. The doctor said that it wasn’t broken, just badly sprained. For a school project, I had to make a pinata. I made a yellow Tweety Bird. It took a long time to make. It was a lot of work. It was very cute. Hugs and kisses, April Dvorak, age 8 1/2 —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club greets, meets, eats
Dear Readers, On Sunday, February 8, 2009, the youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home to entertain the residents who live there. I had a lot of fun visiting and reading my poem to them. My brother, Jason, and Zachary each recited a poem.
Colton Regan, age seven, killed his first deer on December 26, 2008, in Lampasas County. Colton loves to hunt with his uncle David Koslovsky who has taken him hunting several times. Both are members of Lodge 47, Seaton. Colton is very active in the Seaton Youth Club and is in the second grade at Rogers Elementary.
Melinda played her cello, and Deanna did a dance routine that was really cute. Afterwards, we all went to CiCi’s and held our monthly meeting and ate pizza. The meeting was not very long because there was not much to discuss yet. I think next month’s meeting is going to be chocked full of a lot of planning. Watch for details as they are planned. Lodge 107 Floresville youth wins UIL contests A look at a younger generation
It’s easy to find headlines about teenagers who belong to gangs, or who were the cause of a tragic car accident, or who were arrested on drug charges. But there’s at least one individual who has a ringside seat to the conduct of this younger generation: the high school principal. One such leader, Mike Buck, tells a story that didn’t get any press: “One of my students, who comes from a very poor socioeconomic background, found $100 in cash. The girl immediately turned the money in to the front office. There was no hesitation, and there is no way anyone would have known if she kept the money for herself. I know the money would have meant a lot to this girl! “We figured out who had lost the money: It was another girl who came from the same type of background as our good citizen. Why was she carrying so much cash? It was money she had worked for to pay for her senior cap, gown, and graduation invitations. This girl cried tears of joy when the money was returned. “We see examples like this almost daily. It restores one’s faith in the teenagers of today . . . our leaders of tomorrow.” —SPJST—

Basketball goes wild in March
Illinois high school basketball coach and teacher Henry V. Porter gave us the term “March Madness” in March of 1939. Originally, the basketball tournament we know today was a small invitational affair in 1908, and grew to a statewide competition by the late 1930s. —SPJST—

Most of his working years were in the aircraft industry, and he retired from Vought Aircraft in 1980 after working at General Dynamics, Thiokol Chemical Corp. in Brigham City, Utah, and McDonald Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri. After retirement, Roy and his wife traveled extensively throughout Europe, and enjoyed attending polka festivals throughout the United States. In his spare time, Roy enjoyed reading, listening, and recording Czech music and being a baseball umpire. He and Lydia led many grand marches at weddings and wedding anniversaries. They lived in Colleyville for 40 years.
Roy received recognition of many years of dedication, loyalty, and leadership in the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association. In younger years, he was active in the American Sokol organization in Fort Worth and St. Louis, Missouri. In 1994, he took part in the seniors calisthenics number at a Sokol gathering with 10,000 or more gymnasts from all over the world at the Strahov Stadium in Prague, Czech Republic. This was the first event since Sokol was outlawed by the communists in 1948. Roy also bestowed his support and assistance in helping his sons and grandsons obtain the milestone in their lives during their college years. He was a member of Fort Worth Sokol, SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, and the Friendship Club. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; son Anthony J. Alholm; brother A. J. Alholm; and sister Irja Alholm. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years Lydia Alholm; son R. L. Alholm; daughter-in-law Kathleen Alholm; grandsons Matthew Alholm and wife Julie, Daniel Alholm and wife Brooke, and Timothy Alholm; greatgrandchildren Ellie, Anthony, and Parker Alholm, all of the Chicago, Illinois area; one niece; two nephews; and many friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fort Worth Sokol, 6500 Boat Club Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76179; or SPJST Lodge 92, 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76114. May our departed brother rest in peace. Resolution Committee Alene Kercho Elizabeth Howard Ann Schneider —SPJST—

katedry, kterou podporuje CEFT Kostohryzovo stipendium. Naše webstránka je pod značkou CEFT.US.

President Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu Brian Vaníček pozdravil výroční schůzi a pozval nás na koncert a recepci do Mayburn kulturního střediska v Templu, Tx. Webstránka je pod značkou CEFT.US. Pokladník Tony Pustějovský podal celoroční přehled o finančních transakcích a stavu pokladny.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann zahájil schůzi ředitelů a zprávy z výroční schůze byly uznány za dobré i v této schůzi. Členové komise jsou Marvin Marek, Clarice and Ray Snokhousovi a měli celkem dobrý dojem a universita by ráda zařídila výměnu studentů.
President a před seda nadace jistě budou uvažovat o tom, jak zabránit suchopárnosti naší schůze a naopak nějakým způsobem ji učiní radostně přitažlivou. —SPJST—
BVCHS gives to CEFT
Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society presented a check for $300 to the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) at CEFT’s 2009 annual meeting held January 24 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The contribution was given in memory of six deceased BVCHS members:
Helen Louise (Kopecky) Layman Helen will be remembered for her extensive genealogical research work, some of which is published, as well as for the genealogical research help that she freely gave to others.

Edward Layman Although Ed was not of Czech descent, he was Helen Layman’s loyal, supportive husband in all that she did to preserve and promote Czech cultural awareness in Texas.
Albert Novak, Jr. Albert was surely young at heart. He was a faithful “student” in our BVCHS/CEFT Czech language classes, from their start in 1999, until his death at age 85 in September 2007. Over the years, Albert gave thousands of dollars in support of various Czech cultural organizations in Texas, including CEFT, TCHCC, and TPMM. (Albert was a member of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station.)
Joseph A. Novak Joe was two years older than his brother, Albert. Even though Joe lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he never forgot his Texas Czech roots. Like Albert, Joe also gave thousands of dollars in support of Czech cultural organizations in Texas, the CEFT, TCHCC, TPMM, and others. (Joe was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston).
Robert L. Skrabanek Bob was a professor of demography at Texas A&M and was a lifelong supporter of Czech cultural organizations in Texas. He is best remembered as the author of the book, “We’re Czechs”, which is about his growing up near Snook, Texas, as a farm boy of Czech Moravian descent. (Bob was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.)
Ann Elizabeth (Krc) Regmund Annie and her late husband William C. “Bill” Regmund, Sr. were Founding Members of the CEFT in 1954. At her death last October 2008, Annie was 94 years of age. But she Czech Educational Foundation of Texas President Woody Smith, left, accepts the check from Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society President Lou Zaeske to establish a memorial fund for each of the six deceased BVCHS members. The check was presented January 24 at the annual CEFT meeting held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

Set in Prague, twist of fate and the twists of mind of the characters (mostly couples) combine in absurd ways in the interweaving episodes of this comedy.
