District News Dear Members of District Two, Your district officers met Tuesday, February 24 in Taylor, along with your district director and Mr. Robert Leshikar, president of Lodge 48, Beyersville, to set our agenda for the District Two Spring Meeting. The time is coming up fast. The meeting will be on Sunday, March 15 at Lodge 48, Beyersville. Registration will begin at 1 p.m., and the meeting will start at 2 p.m. We are planning the Li’l Mister and Li’l Miss contest so be sure to get all the young children in their Sunday best and bring them to the meeting. Also, we will have the egg decorating contest. This is not just for the youth—it is also for the young-at-heart. So put on your thinking cap, and be sure to enter the contest. We will give cash prizes for first, second, and third places. The youth will have an egg hunt after the meeting. Maybe the Easter Bunny will

show up. What fun! Our theme for this meeting is “Saint Patrick’s Day.” Be sure to wear something green. We don’t want you to get pinched. Ha, ha! Robert and the lodge members have promised us a great meal. We will have roast, buttered potatoes, almond green beans, corn, and a variety of desserts. Doesn’t that sound good! Also, the district and our director are providing the drinks for the day. We will have a few guessing games, a prize drawing, and lots of door prizes. So don’t be left out. Come on to Beyersville on March 15, and let’s all have some great fun and fellowship. See ya there . . . State Fraternalist of the Year expresses appreciation

Brothers and Sisters of SPJST: I would like to thank SPJST for bestowing on me the greatest honor— 2008 SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year. When the announcement was made at the SPJST Awards Banquet in Killeen, I was speechless; and for those of you who know me, that was a rarity! I have had the great pleasure of working side-by-side with so many talented, energetic SPJST members over the years and am honored by this award. Some of my earliest recollections include my family going to the La Parita SPJST hall to help my grandparents, Pete and Tillie Valchar, prepare for the dances. The members worked together to provide wholesome family entertainment for the surrounding communities. It was a place where families gathered to socialize, dance, and relax. Since relocating to San Antonio several years ago, it has been my great pleasure to work with the SPJST

adults and youth again. My children are involved in the youth club, and I enjoy watching them grow by experiencing new things. Join Hands Day and Make a Difference Day are wonderful events that draw adults and youth together for community involvement. We all look forward to YAD, camp, and the end-of-summer family getaway each year and the opportunities to create lasting memories with our SPJST family. SPJST teaches the youth about their heritage, encourages them to get involved in their communities, and to work together for common goals. Participation in SPJST and the youth club is developing their leadership skills, citizenship characteristics, and family values. I am proud to be a part of building our future. There are so many people who make SPJST a great organization. I appreciate being recognized as one of the contributors and look forward to many more years of involvement with SPJST. Fraternally, Sandra Hoggard Lodge 202, Jourdanton —SPJST—

Other News Dorothy Prachyl enjoyed a wonderful visit with her daughter Cathy Cole and family after Christmas in Colorado. Highlights were a shopping trip to Breckenridge and a “high tea” lunch at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. This historic hotel has been continuously operational since opening in 1892. Esther and Robert Cunningham enjoyed their trip to Savannah, Georgia, where it is always great to see your shipmates from the U.S. Salem. Esther and Robert spent Christmas and New Year visiting with their daughter Dr. Kathleen Smalky and son-in-law Dr. Ron Tintner in Houston. For Esther’s birthday in January, her daughter gave her a slumber party which lasted two days. Esther’s two sisters plus three nieces attended. Even Elvis attended and sang her “Happy Birthday.” Dorothy Volek and husband Joe prepared a birthday dinner for their son Joey and his family from McKinney. That was so nice. Till March 12, stay well and happy. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. See you! Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Household Hints Submitted by Raymond Posival Lodge 15, Buckholts

How many of these did you know about? A sealed envelope—Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed. Use empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them neat, and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to. For icy door steps in freezing temperatures, get warm water and put Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won’t refreeze. To remove old wax from a glass candle holder, put it in the freezer for a few hours. Then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down.

The wax will fall out. Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease that is!). Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt blue)—rubbing alcohol on paper towel. Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S pads, I immediately take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would be much more economical. Now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely! In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get “sharpened” this way! Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little hydrogen peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works every time! Use vertical strokes when washing

Lodge 107, Floresville: Pruski Family Expresses Thanks

To Our SPJST Family: We would like to extend our grateful appreciation to all of you who helped grow our dream of a home to a reality. As you can see by the pictures, our house has started to grow from a mound of dirt into a home. As I am writing this letter, the builders are putting the roof on. The electricity is in, and the windows are in. The stucco and sheetrock should be applied next week. So, maybe by the end of March, we will be moving in.

With the donations and prayers from all of you, our lives are returning to normal. When a disaster such as a house fire hits a family, you don’t know what to do. But with great friends as in SPJST, you realize there are still many good people in this world. We would just like to say a great big thank you to all of you from our family. Thank you again, Glen, Wendy, and Lian Pruski —SPJST—

windows outside and horizontal for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks. Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don’t wash windows on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak. Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely light scent in each room when the light is turned on. Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linen. Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least three hours prior to burning.

To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stove top. Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces, and there won’t be any stains. Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator, and it will keep for weeks. When boiling corn on the cob, add

a pinch of sugar to help bring out the corn’s natural sweetness. Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away. Don’t throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces. To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area and you will experience instant relief. Ants, ants, ants everywhere . . . Well, they are said to never cross a chalkline. So, get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself. Use air freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

Lodge 107 Floresville youth wins UIL medals

Dear Readers, I recently had my UIL meet. I entered ready writing and story telling. In ready writing, we were given a s t o r y prompt and then had to write on that topic. S t o r y telling was my favorite. The teacher read a passage to all of us with no expressions or emotions prior to going in before the judges. It was up to each student to retell that story using expression and emotion as well as recalling as many details as possible. I received a bronze medal for ready writing and a silver medal for story telling.

Thanks, Dad and Mom! I want to thank my dad for helping me with story telling before we knew I would someday enter that category. When I was little, my dad would tell me stories and as he did, he would have me fill in the blanks. Sometimes I would retell the same story to my dad. So, thank you, Dad, for helping me! Thank you, Mom, for always being there to pick me up after practices and pushing me when I needed it. Fraternally, Ryan Henke, Vice President —SPJST—

Lodge 107 Floresville youth: bowling and Chiliʼs

Dear Vestnik Readers, What a fun Sunday we had on February 15. The youth from Lodge 107, Floresville went to Pleasanton to go bowling and eat at Chili’s. Ryan (my brother), Brandon, and I went as well as Brandon’s friends—Macy, Logan, and Cody. Chili’s was so good; we were stuffed when we left. I ate all of my pizza and half my French fries. At the bowling alley, Ryan and the bigger kids had fun seeing how fast the ball would travel down the lane. Mine, for some reason, would only go about two to four miles per hour! Then

they started seeing how many strikes they could get. My mom had two strikes in a row. Good job, Mom. I managed to knock all but one pin down. No matter how hard I blew, it would not fall down. We had a blast and we can’t wait until our next outing. Wonder what we’ll do? Go for ice cream . . . Fraternally, Brooke Henke, Reporter —SPJST—

In Memoriam

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of CHARLES RAYMOND FALLEN. Charles Raymond Fallen died on Thursday evening, February 5, 2009, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Raymond was born in Dorchester, Texas on January 2, 1917, the second son of Henry Clay Fallen and Amy Moye Fallen. He grew Raymond Fallen up as a farm boy, moving to areas near Hubbard, Malone, Bardwell, and Ennis. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1934. He immediately joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and during his three years in the CCCs worked on construction projects near Brownwood, the Grand Canyon, and Deadwood, South Dakota. Returning home to his family in Ennis, he joined his older brother Leon in a business rebuilding automotive generators which came to be known as Fallen’s Electric. In early 1941, Raymond was drafted into the army, where he was trained as a communications specialist. He spent most of World War II stationed in or near Portland, Maine, helping to set up and supervise a network of civilian air observers as a defense against possible German air attacks. In 1943, he met and married Frances Gillies of Portland, Maine, with whom he eventually had children: Charles, Steve, and Sandie. After his discharge from the army in 1946, Raymond returned to Ennis with his new wife and son and resumed working with his brother. Leon soon died; however, and Raymond bought Fallen’s Electric, which he and Frances operated. The business struggled until 1956, when Raymond decided to change the company’s mission and strategy. He renamed the company Ennis Automotive and began supplying remanufactured automotive parts to his former competitors. Under the new business model, the company thrived for many years, realized success as a high-volume supplier to the automotive industry, was a

major employer in the Ennis community, and achieved international promiin the automotive nence remanufacturing industry until the company closed in 2005. Frances died in 1966 and in 1974, Raymond was married to Marian Balch of Dallas. Raymond was always active in community affairs and was a devoted philanthropist. He served for many years as Ennis city commissioner and for four years (1966-1970) as the mayor of Ennis. He also served on the boards of trustees for both the Ennis Independent School District and the Ennis Municipal Hospital. He was a longtime member of the Ennis Noon Lion’s Club and the First United Methodist Church of Ennis, and was one of the first members of the Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association. He was a former member of the Baylor Health Care System Foundation Board of Directors and volunteered in the Caring Hearts program at Baylor University Medical Center - Dallas for many years. Raymond was also a very generous supporter of many local and regional charitable and educational organizations. Raymond will be remembered for the quick smile and compassion he had for everyone. His curiosity was unfailing, as was his interest in people—their backgrounds, interests, and opinions. He was an avid world traveler for many years, but even here at home, Raymond retained his fascination with the multiplicity of nationalities, religions, races, and cultures represented by those around him. Tuesday lunches hosted by Raymond at his home in recent years brought together individuals from disparate walks of life for lively discussions of topics as wide-ranging as politics, entertainment, international news, and Ennis history. Never content to stand on the sidelines, Raymond pursued his interests with tenacity and the understanding that his involvement and continued intellectual curiosity set an example. In addition, he was a kind, patient, and devoted care giver for his wife, Marian, prior to her death in August 2008. Raymond was predeceased by his son Charles in 2005. Raymond is survived by son Steve and wife Janey of Ennis; daughter Sandie Conner of Fort Worth; sister Ann Schoeps of Dallas; grandchildren Nancy Fallen of Dallas, Stuart Fallen and wife Susan of Dallas, Stacy Con-

ner of Los Angeles, California, and Ryan Conner of Fort Worth; greatgranddaughter Sydney Fallen of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews in Texas and Maine. Funeral services were held Monday, February 9 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ennis, Texas, with Reverend Keith Murray officiating. Visitation was Sunday, February 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel. Interment was in Restland Abbey Mausoleum, under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helping Hands of Ennis (P.O. Box 472, Ennis, Texas 75120) or to the Boys and Girls Club of Ennis (P.O. Box 722, Ennis, Texas 75120). A memorial has been made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Charles Raymond Fallen. With deepest sympathy, Betty Macalik, Financial Secretary —SPJST—
