VӖSTNÍK
Let’s Join Hands on May 2!
Now is a great time to start thinking about and planning a Join Hands
Day project for your lodge and/or youth club. Join Hands Day is Saturday, May 2. A national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network, Join Hands Day is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages lodges to get involved in their local communities on this special day! The Home Office is offering a $100 cash incentive to lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting Join Hands Day projects. A form is available at www.spjst.org in the fraternal section or call the Fraternal Department at the Home Office. The deadline to apply for the incentive is March 31. Continuing Education Classes Cancelled Due to a delay in procedure and paperwork processes with the Texas Department of Insurance, all continuing education classes originally scheduled for March and April are cancelled for our sales agents. Please disregard the class schedule that was published in the February issue of the SPJST Excellence newsletter. State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest, FIC, CFFM says that classes will be held starting in late April. “We are still planning to have four classes this year (16 hours) to help you meet your CE requirements,” he says. For more information or if you have questions, please contact your State Field Rep-
resentative listed at left or call the SPJST Insurance Department at the Home Office.
In Reply to “Unread Poems” We received a note from Lodge 187, Round Rock FAC/Reporter Margie Haas. She says, “In reply to David Knape’s poem ‘Unread Poems,’ yes, we do read his poems. We talked about them at our last meeting. The one about windmills really took us back a few years. Please continue.” Thanks to Lodge 187, Round Rock member David Knape for sharing his poetry with the Vestnik. We certainly appreciate his work and sharing it with the Vestnik readers. Keep up the great job!
Hot Dog! Itʼs April 15! The Texas Fraternal Congress will host an informal come and go picnic and Texas kick-off party for Join Hands Day 2009 on Wednesday, April 15 at the Texas State Capitol. Hot dogs will be served on the southwest lawn from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you are in the Austin area on April 15, please consider stopping by the Texas Capitol and meeting your fraternal friends. The week of April 12 to 18 is Legislative Awareness Week for Texas Fraternal Congress and SPJST. Still to come . . . Stay tuned to the Vestnik for lots more information and event summaries and photos including scenes and results from the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament held March 7 at Lodge 48, Beyersville; Lodge 80, Holland youth assisting with chamber of commerce banquet; Lodge 151, Wharton meeting and recognizing efforts; plus much, much more!

NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism
Lodge 107, Floresville Member Natalie Henke named Fraternal MVP
The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Natalie Henke—a member of SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of March 9, 2009. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Barbara A. Cheaney. “As a Fraternal MVP, Natalie Henke embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Henke has been a member of SPJST for two years. She serves her lodge as secretary, chairperson for the rules and regulations committee, assists with fund-raisers for the lodge, assists with the lodge’s spring awards banquet, and serves as chaperone for summer youth camp, outings and other activities. Henke assisted at District and State Youth Achievement Days (YAD), in the lodge booth during the Peanut Festival, took part in lodge maintenance (inside and outside), and assisted with the lodge’s Christmas party. Henke serves her community on the Tiny Tigers PTA, creating awards for the grade level that had the largest growth in membership. She also created an art contest for the first and second grades, served as Home Room Mom, and assisted during Texas Primary Reading Inventory testing. Henke was invited to the Primary Campus Awards Assembly for Volunteers, where she received an award for her volunteer work on campus. She is a member of the San Antonio Botanical Gardens where she assists children in
making bird feeders from recycled materials, identifying live snakes and explaining how to care for trees and plants. Henke works as a volunteer for Regency Manor and Rehabilitation Center as newsletter editor. Henke assisted with the lodge’s JOIN HANDS DAY project, getting adults and youth together to beautify the grounds at a local nursing home. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.
About the NFCA The 123year-old NFCA unites 72 notfor-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 10 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $343 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2007 alone, contributed almost $418 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered over 95 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. Lodge 5 Pilot Point-Tioga reports on March meeting
Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga held its monthly meeting on March 7, 2009. The meeting was called to order by President Brian Heitzman. The minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved as read.
Old Business Dean and Jack Carender had to cancel their plans to go to the banquet in Killeen. We had gone for the last several years and really enjoyed the celebration. Sorry, we could not keep the date. The Fraternal Activities and Entertainment listing on page 22 of the Vestnik shows the regular scheduled monthly meetings to be at the PointBank Community Hall in Pilot Point, Texas. Due to our lodge being so small with very few participants, changes had to be made. A sign will be on the door before each meeting as to where the meeting is going to be held and the time. Sorry for the inconvenience, but time does not permit for the lodge to announce the meeting place and the date may not come on the first Sunday of each month. There are also two numbers listed that you may call for information. Respectfully submitted, Jack Carender, Jr., Reporter —SPJST—

Scenes from Ben and Martha Trcalek Scholarship Fund Chili Lunch Sunday, March 1, 2009 • Lodge 17, New Tabor Hall
Ben and Martha Trcalek were legends in SPJST and the Caldwell community. Thanks to many supporters, they will be forever remembered with the establishment of the Ben and Martha Trcalek Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Tracaleks were active members of Lodge 17, New Tabor, and Ben served as District One Director from 1981 to 1987. Ben passed away in 1987, and Martha passed away in 2008. Lodge 17, New Tabor hosted a successful fund-raiser on Sunday, March 1 at the lodge hall in New Tabor. A meal featuring chili and beans, homemade cornbread, crackers, dessert, and iced tea sold for $5. More than 400 lunch tickets were sold. A silent auction and a prize drawing were also part of the event that raised a total of $10,536. The fund is now endowed, and the SPJST Home Office will begin awarding scholarship grants in Ben and Martha Trcalek’s name. “I would like to thank (District One Director) Donnie (Victorick) for initiating the endowed scholarship fund for my parents,” son Ben Trcalek, Jr. said.
“Thanks to Donnie and his family for donating and cooking the chili, our lodge members, the folks donating to the cause, and all who came out to support the fund-raiser. I know Mom and Dad would be very proud of this big success.” “The Ben and Martha Trcalek Endowed Scholarship Fund is founded to honor their memories,” SPJST Lodge 17 President Randy Gaas said. “Both Ben and Martha were strong supporters of SPJST, and the lodge believes that setting up this scholarship fund is a great way to honor them and assist with the educations of young people.” In the lodge’s meeting, President Gaas thanked everyone who supported and assisted with the fund-raiser. Susan Skrabanek, one of the event’s organizers, praised the youth club members for their assistance. “The youth club did an awesome job,” she said. “These youth will benefit from the scholarship fund.” Speaking to the youth, she said, “You did this for yourselves and for many future generations. Hats off to you and your parents for making this event a success.” —SPJST—

They lived on a corner lot about 150 deep, and she could throw a baseball about half that distance before she even started school. People would stop and watch her throw and with all the attention, she began to like playing catch with Sam. When she was about 11 or 12, the father of one of the boys she and her brother played with, invited her to go see a ladies softball team practice as he knew the coach. What?
By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock I thought I heard a shouted word from downstairs I think it came
Was that my spouse who called me out that harshly yelled my name?
Was it for me I’ll go and see but then again wonder if I should? If I wait the yell will pass but no tellin’ what will ensue It may be more perhaps a chore that I forgot to do If it repeats then I’ll unseat and see what was the deal
I told her once just call me for lunch or when it’s time for my next meal! —SPJST—

Celebrate green for Easter
Easter is a time when families come together to celebrate in a secular way or embrace the start of the spring season. At a time when so much focus is put on rebirth and a new start, it may seem fitting to think about celebrating in an environmentally friendly manner.
• Choose a recycled material for Easter basket fill. Skip the environmentally unfriendly plastic grass for Easter baskets. Instead, use shredded pieces of magazines or newspapers that you’ve run through a home shredder. Later on gather the paper strands to recycle them. You can also purchase recycled paper “grass” in different colors. • Go for minimally packaged prod-
ucts. Chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks are common treats in Easter baskets, but they generally have a lot of unnecessary packaging. Why not try making your own candy creations from chocolate molds?
• Hide papier-mache or clay eggs. Plastic eggs certainly are convenient and won’t start to smell bad like hardboiled eggs if the children don’t uncover all of your egg hiding spots.
VӖSTNÍK
However, plastic is certainly not very environmentally friendly, especially if those plastic eggs end up in the trash year after year. Instead, make it a craft project for kids to mold eggs out of dough, clay, or even papier-mache. Paint and hide them to be retrieved for little prizes.
• Dine on colored Easter eggs. Don’t let those hard-boiled colored eggs go to waste. Use them to create egg salad,

In December 1963, Scott and White moved to its present location. Clements was the one-man legal and public relations officers. Clements proposed a formal health law organization, the National Health Lawyers Association. Mr. Clements was an invaluable asset to Scott and White and played a large role in its success. He served as president of the board of the Presbyterian Children’s Home and Service Agency of Texas. He served on the Advisory Council on Community Affairs; Texas Board of Human Resources; and the Texas Board of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. He was chairman for the committee on liaison with the Medical Profession for the Texas Bar Association. In 1999, the UT Ex-Students’ Association honored him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple. Through all his many honors and accolades, he maintained that his wife, the former Ann Trigg, his two daughters, his son, and his grandchildren were his best assets.

Resolution of Sympathy
We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOHN SAMMONS, SR. Memorial services for John Fullerton Sammons, 86, of Temple were at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Temple with Reverend Martin Knox and Reverend Brian Dunks officiating. A private family service was held prior at Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Sammons J. Sammons, Sr. died Tuesday, March 3 in the late afternoon after a long illness. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. He was born near Eatonton in rural Putnam County, Georgia, on August 12, 1922, to parents Ulmont Bransford Sammons and Emma Lizzie Fullerton Sammons. After graduating from Oconee County High School he received a BBA degree with honors from the University of Georgia in 1942. While there, he was active in numerous clubs and organizations. He also was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army through the ROTC program. Immediately thereafter, he joined the military during World War II. Prior to leaving for the European Theatre as

a Lieutenant in the 3rd Army under the command of General George S. Patton, he was stationed at Fort Hood where he was a procurement officer for his troop. On a purchasing trip to buy supplies, he stopped in old Temple Hardware and met his future wife of 62 years Marilyn Laramey, a sales clerk for her dad, the owner Avriett Laramey. Driving back to Fort Hood his driver, Sergeant Sam French, asked Lieutenant Sammons if he had gotten the girl’s phone number. Immediately, they turned back and returned to the store to ask her name and number and asked if he could give her a call. His diary recalls that day as “I’ve met the girl I am going to marry!” After a successful courtship of Marilyn and her mother, a lifelong romance was begun. During the war, he fought through the hedgerows of France after landing as part of the Second Wave of soldiers to reach Omaha Beach. He left a detailed written legacy of the battles fought, friends lost, challenges faced and ultimate victory over such a terrible force. His many buddies stayed in close contact throughout the years and got together often, corresponded much and celebrated the lives daily that they almost lost so many years ago. The horrors of war and the difficulties faced prepared him for any challenges to come with a feeling that no matter the problem, it was nothing compared to what he had survived. He was a true lover of this country and still stood on old feeble legs at full salute whenever the flag passed by. Marilyn and John were married after the war on August 3, 1946, in the old Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple. He joined the church and spent many years as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and church treasurer. Mr. Sammons became active in his new home of Temple joining the family business and involving himself in civic clubs and public service. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, vice president of the Temple Jaycees, a Mason and a Shriner for over 50 years, and a former vice president of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. He was also the president and co-owner of Temple Supply Company, Inc. He was happy with his new city and life. They had a son then a daughter— John, Jr. and Lynn. They truly lived the American dream. Both enjoyed many friends through business relationships, school involvement, and numerous trips across our nation and the world. His public service career included two terms on the Temple School Board from 1961 to 1967, including one term as president during the con-
struction of the new high school. He also served on the Temple City Commission for 1974 to 1976. During this time, his children married—John to Marilyn and Lynn to Gary. They would become as two other children to him, and he loved them with all his heart. The family grew with the addition of grandchildren, and he reveled with each new child. They were all “the most beautiful and talented” children in the world. His love of family and dedication to them led him to his greatest gift—his total commitment to provide a life of security and opportunity for them to achieve any dreams they may have had. He encouraged all to chase out their dreams and think big, but to do all with a sense of honor and love for each other. He truly provided the wind beneath all wings to soar to anything aspired. Eventually, he returned to the Baptist faith of his youth and joined the First Baptist Church, Temple, Texas. He loved the Lord, his family, his friends, America, and his little dog Missy. As the years went by, this was more than enough for a man who was born with high intelligence, talent, and passion for so many interesting things. He wrote his family so many beautiful treasures of advice and encouragement. In one of his last to us, all he closed with “My prayers every day are for each one of us – for health and safety – for success and happiness – and thanks to our Heavenly Father for all that only He could have done! My love for all of you is unbounded. Marilyn and I are so grateful for the family we have created! We look forward to the future! Go with God!” . . . And we will, Dad. You were the best. John Fullerton Sammons was preceded in death by his older brother U.B. Sammons, Jr. Survivors include wife Marilyn; son John F. Sammons, Jr., and wife Marilyn of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter Lynn Sammons Darst and husband Gary of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Elisa and husband Bruce Etter, Melanie and husband David Jarvis, John Sammons, III, Derek Darst and wife Melissa, Casi Darst; and greatgrandchildren—Drew, Jackson, Preston, Avery, Dylan and Maren. Recently, while going through some old boxes we discovered this charming picture and we are hoping that someone who reads the Vestnik can help us identify the child. The picture and flowery frame are actually printed on top of a tin easel. It is not a picture and frame, as it appears. Spindles and Knees ABC of Czech
Welcome to the ABC of Czech.
Today, we’ll look at pasta in Czech cuisine. If you have so far associated pasta only with Italy, today you have a chance to find out about homegrown Czech pasta těstoviny. First of all, one should try to avoid using the word “pasta” in Czech restaurants, because the waiter might bring you toothpaste instead. As we already said the general word is těstoviny which comes from the word testo, meaning dough. Even before the market here was flooded with real Italian products, people could buy Czech versions of it, complete with Czech names. Forget about fusilli or rotini - they are traditionally known as vřetýnka or little spindles in Czech. No one knows about conchiglie, but everybody likes mušličky - little mussels. One of the most widely available shapes of pasta in the past decades were elbow macaroni - or kolínka meaning little knees. The type of pasta known worldwide as penne, is commonly called - sekané potrubí or chopped pipes in this country. Rosa marina was always sold under the name těstovinová rýže or pasta rice. Most of these types of pasta were eaten as a side dish in the past decades rather than a meal in its own right. Onto soup pasta: Stelle are hvězdičky or little stars, alphabets are písmenka or little letters; “letter soup” - písmenková polévka - is certainly very popular with kids. With some types of pasta, Czechs just mispronounce the name to better suit their mouths. For example spaghetti becomes - špagety - and macaroni becomes makaróny.
But there are types of pasta that seem to have always been prepared in this country. One is ordinary noodles or nudle. Short and thin noodles are used to thicken meat or vegetable broths. Thicker versions are eaten with ground poppy seeds, sugar and butter nudle s mákem. I remember my grandmother rolling out the dough, cutting the noodles and then drying them. Cut into little squares, they are called fleky or flíčky. They are used either as soup pasta or to make a typical Czech meal known as šunkofleky. It is made of cubed smoked meet, cooked fleky and eggs, and it's all baked in an oven. And finally, there are - noky - little dumplings made of flour and eggs that are eaten with meat or in clear soups. Although the name sounds similar to the Italian gnocchi, the Czech term comes directly from German. We should also mention the Slovak potato dumplings - halušky - which are even more similar to gnocchi and are usually eaten with bacon and Slovak sheep cheese. But now we are out of time. Thanks for joining us, and till next time - dobrou chuť - bon appetit! — Pavla Horáková Radio Prague
