Congratulations to, left to right, Woman of the Year Jewel Wolf, Student of the Year Victoria Pajestka, and Man of the Year Johnnie Kelley, all of Lodge 80, Holland. They were recognized on February 28 at the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce banquet, held at Lodge 80. Each year, the Chamber selects Woman, Man, and Student of the Year. These individuals are selected based on their community involvement, support, and dedication to making the Holland area a better place to live, work, and go to school. A meal of barbecue chicken, salad, peas and carrots, iced tea, and dessert was served. Lodge 80 Youth Club members helped serve tea during the buffet-style meal. Bell County District Attorney Henry Garza was the featured speaker for the evening.
SPJST lodges and youth clubs and local community groups are encouraged to join hands on May 2. Visit www.spjst.org for more details.

Eggcellent Expansion
A fresh egg will sink in cold water, but an old egg will float.
When the hen lays an egg, there is a small air pocket inside the rounded end. As the egg ages, the air pocket grows, causing the egg to become lighter. An egg that floats should be disposed of (carefully)! Can’t remember if an egg is fresh or hard boiled? Just spin the egg. If it wobbles, it’s raw. If it spins easily, it’s hard boiled. Eggs contain all the essential protein, minerals and vitamins, except Vitamin C. But egg yolks are one of few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D. The color of the egg shell is not related to quality, nutrients, flavor, or cooking characteristics. White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and white ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. Brown egg layers usually are slightly larger and require more food, thus brown eggs usually cost more than white eggs. China produces most eggs, at about 160 billion per year. In the United States, about 260 million hens produce more than 65 billion eggs per year. A hen can lay about 250 eggs per year. There are 150 species of chicken. The chicken is one of the first domestic animals, appearing in China around 1400 BC. Happy Easter!

Lodge 48 Beyersville reports on March activities
The March meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was held on March 8, 2009, at 5 p.m. The youth club met first followed by an Easter egg hunt. After we ate wrap-arounds, hot dogs, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, and desserts, the adult meeting commenced. The youth club had about 20 children and 10 adults attend their meeting. They also gave door prizes after their meeting, and all kids hunted eggs around the building.
President Robert Leshikar called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. We had 40 people in attendance. District Two Director Bobby reported that the hall received an incentive check for $600 for meeting the lodge sales quota. Sales Agent Brian Patschke was present at the meeting to receive his award for top honors for being District Two Top Career Agent for Applications Written for 2008. Congratulations, Brian! We asked Brother Bobby Wuensche to pose for a picture with Brother Brian. Our birthdays in March included Amy, Trevor, Linda, and Alice Wuensche. Karl and Sherry Wuensche were celebrating their anniversary this month. If you have a birthday or anniversary coming up, please let me know so that we can wish you a happy birthday at the next meeting. You can reach me and leave a message at (512) 352-8664. A little birdie with ice in her hands told me that Mr. Gilbert Shiller has a birthday coming up and will be a very young 84 in April.
We want to remind everyone that we have entered our vacation meeting dates. These will be each month on a Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge hall. The dates are April 13; May 11; June 15; July 13; and August 10. Please put these dates on your calendar. Next month, I will print a list of meal providers for your convenience as well. Bonnie reported that Beyersville would appear in the Taylor Daily Press’ annual wedding issue. This will assist in getting our name into the public for hall rentals. FAC Ruth reported on the busy schedule that we have had. On March 7, Lodge 48, Beyersville was host to the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament. Although attendance was down, we had nine tables of players. From Beyersville, we had John Wuensche, Jerry Turek, Jimmy Turek, Kristi Turek, Gilbert and Demetra Shiller, Linda Wuensche, and Robert Leshikar. I would like to encourage those of you who know how to play

dominoes and/or taroks as well as horseshoes and golf to be sure and participate in these tournaments as much as possible. SPJST is doing its part in keeping these traditions alive and well in a world where most people are just too busy to sit and play good ol’ table games any more. If you know how to play, teach your children and grandchildren so that they can keep these traditions alive as well. We also want to thank Donna Machac and Ruth Wuensche for spending the whole day on their feet in the kitchen. Donna and Ruth are two of the friendliest faces at Beyersville, and we are blessed to have them. Several of our other friendly faces had conflicting schedules or they, too, would have been there; you know who you are. I hate doing this, but if I don’t then I get “yelled at, but I want to thank myself for going to get the chicken for lunch as well as picking up the groceries for the meeting the next day. Of course, I like driving around so it was no skin off my teeth.

Lodge 48 Beyersville hosts successful district spring meeting
Lodge 48, Beyersville was proud to host the District Two Spring Meeting. We had about 140 people registered as attending. Before the meeting was called to order, we had guests pop in and give us updates to their non-affiliated organizations. SPJST State Youth Director John Hoelscher updated us on the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). CHMGC Board Member Jesse Pospisil updated us on the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, and District Two Rest Home Director Howard Leshikar updated us on the Assisted Living Center expansion in Taylor. After these three spoke, the meeting was called to order. All in attendance stood at attention for the presentation of the colors. We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We were then awed by the wonderful sentiments of boys and girls between the ages of three and five years old. It was a wonderful parade of future youth club members who showed that they can think on their feet when they were asked questions by District Two King Kyle Hoelscher and Queen Amber Penn. Later in the meeting, DYC Koslovsky had all persons who had participated in the youth club, but were now out of the age range, to stand up. Many of the people standing were persons who were very active in the management of SPJST. This was to show how important the youth of today are and how they will gain experience in the formative youth club ages that will enable them to be an im-

Lodge 48, Beyersville hall was beautifully decorated in the theme of St. Patrick’s Day with shamrocks, gold coins, lots of green, and of course, kisses (chocolate, of course.) Thank you, Bonnie Leshikar for getting this organized and to Robert, Bonnie, Paula, Denisse, Ruth, Bobby, Margie, Alice B., and Donna M. for helping decorate the night before the meeting. Thanks to all those people who as well as Karl and John for serving as bar attendants, Gilbert and Demetra Shiller, Donna V., Alice Wuensche, and Bonnie Wolf for working the day of the meeting. Also, a big thank you for everyone who brought the wonderful desserts. The meal was delicious and consisted of roast beef, gravy, potatoes, green beans, and corn as well as fresh rolls, and iced tea. We did not have much food left. Lodge 48, Beyersville was well represented with winners in the Kraslice - Czech Easter Egg Decorating Contest. All of our guys who entered won, but the ladies did not fair as well. Trent and Trevor won first and third places, respectively, for their category of under six years of age, and Karl Wuensche won second in the adult category. I hope these guys will not shy away from women’s work in the future now that we know that they have gotten in touch with their feminine side. It is also a challenge to you
other guys to show off our skills at the District Two Fall Meeting by designing and decorating a Christmas ornament. The membership of Lodge 48, Beyersville sends its sincere appreciation to the District Two officers and all who attended who made the day so memorable for all of us. It was a pleasure to have you visit at our hall. Denisse Wuensche, Reporter —SPJST—

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 12, 2009. The quilters arrived around 8 a.m. We arranged tables and chairs and stretched Ann Clagett’s quilt. It was a pretty one made by her grandmother. We did see Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger from Dallas, Libbie Vrla and Lil Kosarek from Fort Worth and Arlington. At lunch time, Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you all who helped clean. President Sadie Kubin was unable to attend so Dorothy Prachyl called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Dorothy Kudrna read the minutes of our last meeting, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Dorothy Prachyl was thanked for donating napkins. Sunshine Person Eleanora announced our one and only birthday celebrant—Georgia Wensowitch, and we all sang, “Happy Birthday” to her. May you have many, many more. Donations were made in memory of Mary Vrla Beran by Dorothy Prachyl; in memory of Helen Reavis by Libbie Elsik; in memory of Georgia Tupy by Dorothy Prachyl, Libbie Elsik, Libbie Vrla, Lil Kosarek, and Georgie Morales. A discussion was held on purchasing an ad in the National Fort Worth Sokol Slet program book. It has a longer name, but I didn’t get it all sorry. A motion was made by Sylvia, seconded by Libbie, and it was voted on by all that we purchase the ad. The event will be held June 23 to 28 in Fort Worth at the Convention Center and Farrington Field. Libbie Vrla told all about the events that will be taking place—opening ceremonies, 5K run, family fun/run walk, gymnastics competition, basketball, volleyball, golf, and bowling tournaments, downtown Fort Worth parade, Slet program, and many, many more things going on. It will be a fun week. Everyone should try and attend. Libbie Vrla also told of the passing of her friend Roy Alholm. He and his wife Lydia have been her friends for many years, and that he will be missed. Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you note from Joan Strunc thanking the Circle for her card and money gift that she had received when she had knee surgery. Thank you, Joan, for the nice compliment that you gave me. I hope to see you soon. Dorothy also read a poem “Quilting Forever” which was enjoyed by all. Lil thanked all who brought their

Barbara Linney-Gonzales gives furniture to SPJST ENC
Easter Wonderment Chester Myrel Carr Lodge 88, Houston
’Twas a beautiful Easter Sunday, a Sacred Day and also a Fun Day.
Church was over, eggs hide and found, Easter baskets empty now lay on the ground.
Lodge 88, Houston member Barbara-LinneyGonzales recently donated office furniture to the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). She is pic-
that they stayed at one resort on the Pacific Coast instead of traveling about the country. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with mountains, forests, beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and many kinds of birds and animals, and float trips on the rivers to observe the wildlife are a favorite activity for visitors. They were able to take a short float trip on a river near their resort, but unfortunately, this time did not see as many birds and animals as before. They did have some surprise visitors on their patio one night — four racoons scavenging for food. People aren’t supposed to feed them, but they were so fat. It seemed obvious they were being fed. Joyce kept up her daily exercise at the excellent gym, but no prostna. There were a lot of people from the northern United States enjoying the sunshine and beach. In fact, the couple next door was from Canada and said that they were mighty glad to get away from the snow. Lots of people from other countries own condos there, and they saw a number of these complexes in the area. However, a real estate agent said Costa Rica is beginning to feel the results of the worldwide problems with the economy and the condos aren’t selling so well right now. It was, on the whole a slow, relaxing week, and we need that sometime, don’t we? Oh, and by the way, they did manage to get into the small village a couple of miles away to visit all the souvenir shops. What is a trip without souvenirs? So till April 9, stay well and happy. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. See you! Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: spring break Oklahoma-style
Dear Readers, I went to Oklahoma with my family over spring break. We only went for a couple of days, but we had so much fun. We went to Arbuckle Wilderness and the National Cowboy and Heritage Museum. We ate at Toby Keith’s “I Love This Bar and Grill.” The food was so good, and the stuff in the restaurant was way cool. There was a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling that was painted like the American flag; it was cool! And, there was a stage that people perform on some days, but we didn’t get to see anybody. I got a ball cap as a souvenir that is camo and says “American Soldier.” We also saw a lot of different statues, pictures, and artifacts at the museum. That was really neat! An ostrich put his head in our truck, and my dad fed him out of his cup at Arbuckle Wilderness. It was fun—even though it rained while we were there. Justin Mraz —SPJST—

We ate at T o b y Keith’s “I L o v e This Bar a n d Grill.” The food was really good, and the restaurant was awesome! I got a pair of Toby Keith drumsticks as a souvenir. They had benches to sit on that were once the tailgates of trucks. There was also a case with a guitar and some clothes that Toby Keith had worn. The guitar was painted like the American flag. There was a large statue of Abraham Lincoln at the museum, and it was cool. It was neat to feed the animals out of the truck at Arbuckle Wilderness. Even though it rained while we were there, the animals were still out wandering around and wanting us to feed them. Good thing we were in the truck and stayed dry! Some kind of deer put his head in our truck and tried to get my mommy. It was funny! Jacob Mraz —SPJST—

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club: March Activities
Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club met on March 8, 2009, at 5 p.m. We had 20 youth and 10 adults in attendance. Ms. Donna updated us on all the activities coming up for our youth club. We also decided to go to the movies next month for our April meeting. Ms. Donna told us that Amy won first place in her age group for the SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest. She thanked the rest of us for entering. We thanked Alexis and Alyssa for bringing some guests to our meeting. We hope that they are able to join our youth club. I bet that they would have fun with us. Amy invited her cousins to come, too. While they are members of our lodge, they are a little young to join the youth club. My brothers attended, too, but they are too young to be in the youth club right now. After the meeting, we all hunted Easter eggs. The big kids did not want all of their eggs so we got to hunt in
their area, too. Amy, Kacie, and I attended the District Two Spring Meeting. We entered the Kraslice - Czech Easter Egg Decorating Contest, but did not win. My brothers won though, and so did Amy’s dad. We got to watch Evan and Ethan Muston, and Trent and Trevor Wuensche in the Little Mister Parade. District Two Queen Amber Penn asked my brother Trent about his pet goat. When she asked him what the goat’s name was, he accidentally said Trevor. Everybody laughed, but that is not the goat’s name. Kacie was excited because her big brother Kyle from the University of Texas at Austin was visiting for spring break. I am glad to get to meet someone who goes to the real University of Texas. My dad is a big Longhorn fan and during football season, he and my Uncle Frank do not talk to each other
because Uncle Frank was in the Aggie Corps. Daddy doesn’t talk to Aunt Ginger either because she is a Red Raider. I am planning to go to Texas A and M though because I want to be a veterinarian. Daddy said that it was okay because they have the best school for that field. He also said something about living with me when he gets old, but I was not listening at that point. I hope that I passed my TAKS test. I should find out when I get back to school from spring break. The week before spring break, I was chosen to represent the third grade for the Taylor ISD School Showcase. I attend T. H. Johnson Elementary and participated in the math and reading showcase. Aunt DD and mommy watched me. I saw Ms. Ellen and Kayla Hannington there, too. Kayla Wuensche, age 8 Reporter —SPJST—

In Memory of Roger Prinz
Roger Raymond Prinz of Coupland, Texas, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 15, 2009, at the age of 44. He was born to Raymond and Marjorie Prinz in Taylor, Texas, on June 30, 1964. He was baptized in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and remained an active and faithful member until his death. Roger graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1982. Since childhood, he loved everything about Roger Prinz farming; from planting to harvesting, he was completely engrossed in his families’ farm. He was particularly relieved when Roundup Ready crops were used. He was a former member of the Travis County Farm Bureau and a stockholder with Williamson County Grain in Taylor, Texas. Aside from farming, his family was near and dear to his heart. He thoroughly enjoyed being with his family and nieces, nephews, greatnieces and nephews; doing just about anything God had in store for them that day. He and his family really loved it whenever they’d spend the afternoon cooking and eating his prized barbecue pork ribs. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin. Roger was preceded in death by his father Raymond Prinz. Roger is survived by his mother Marjorie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and husband Randy Kruger, Margaret and husband Calvin Taylor, Geraldine and husband Dr. Wayne Ross, Helen and husband Dennis Hengst, Betty and husband Thomas Gola; brother and lifelong farming partner James Prinz and wife Denise; 13 nieces and nephews; six greatnieces and nephews; and friends Kenneth and Joe. Visitation was held at the Elgin Fu-
neral Home on Friday evening, March 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service was officiated by Pastor Joan Fabac at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lund, Texas, on Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m. Interment immediately followed at the Lund Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a memorial in his honor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 469, Elgin, Texas 78621. Arrangements and care were entrusted to the staff of Elgin Funeral Home. With deepest sympathy, Evelyn Gustafson —SPJST—

CHMGC, Temple presents wish list
After almost eight years of planning and preparation, the renovation of the Louis and Oleta Hanus Building at Third and French Streets in Temple is almost complete, and the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center will be moving to its new location. The targeted date for beginning the move is April 1. The mission of the museum is to foster educational, cultural, and genealogical opportunities, specifically as it pertains to people of Czech heritage. It accomplishes this by providing genealogical research materials, sponsoring educational programs, and collecting, researching, preserving and exhibiting artifacts and manuscripts to implement these programs. New exhibits and displays are being designed to fit in the new space and create vibrancy. The museum is fortunate to have a large variety of artifacts around which to build both permanent and temporary displays. The permanent display areas will emphasize the history of the area that is now known as the Czech Republic and neighboring lands, and the immigration of the Czech people into the United States. A large portion of the permanent display will demonstrate Czech community life in early Texas. The following is a “wish list” of items we would like donated to complete the museum displays and ambiance:
Texas Czech Genealogical Society Website: txczgs.org
Promoting the study of the genealogy of the particular group of people known as “Texas Czechs”
For membership: Merlene Bravenec (254) 778-7285
• juke box • old, small settee or parlor furniture • fireplace mantle • old school furniture and desks • Bible stand • conference table and chairs • computers in good condition • individual family histories and stories • museum quality mannequins
The needs of the museum are not limited to these items, and we will be adding to the list as more plans are made. The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible. For questions and information, please call Sandi Wicker at (254) 899-2935. —SPJST—

The deadline for submitting this information is Wednesday, May 6 and is to be mailed to TCHCC Ancestors, PO Box 6, La Grange, Texas 78945. Your family may honor their immigrant ancestor on this prestigious wall with a memorial donation of $2,500. This would be a worthwhile effort that each family reunion could undertake so their family ancestor is forever remembered. Contact the TCHCC at (888) 785-4500 for additional information. —SPJST—
