Assisted Living opened its doors in December 2003. The facility built 24 rooms of various sizes and styles. The board continued to envision the need for additional care for the elderly of the area who need assistance. Now, the non-profit organization is expanding its existing structure to meet those needs. Veselé Velikonoce
Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun
time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs. Many symbols of Easter are related to the spring and beginning of new life. In the Czech Republic, Easter symbols include:
Eggs and Kraslice The hand-painted or decorated egg (kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Easter eggs are decorated by girls to be given to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs, and they usually require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw (hay), watercolors, onion peels, picture stickers. There are no limitations in creating pretty, colorful eggs. Baby Animals—Lamb, Bunny Rabbit, Chicken One Easter tradition is to bake a lamb, but in the Czech Republic real lamb is usually replaced by one made from gingerbread.
Pussywillow and Pomlázka Young, live pussywillow twigs are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is whipped with them. A pomlázka (from pomladit or “make younger”) - a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs - has therefore been used for centuries by boys who go caroling on Easter Monday and symbolically whip girls on the legs. Boys used to make their own pomlázky in the past (the more twigs, the more difficult it was to braid one), but this tradition and skill is long gone and pomlázky can be bought in stores and on the streets. Some men don’t even bother and use a single twig or even a wooden spoon! The Color Red Red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness and new life that comes with the spring.
The Days Before Easter Sunday Children finish school on Ugly
Wednesday (škaredá středa), which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of Green Thursday (Zelený čtvrtek), every boy in the village equips himself with a wooden rattle (řehtačka), which is specially made for the purpose, the boys form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling is to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday (Velký pátek) and then one more time on White Saturday (Bílá sobota) when the boys don't only walk through the village but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they’re given money which they then split between themselves. Easter Sunday Easter Sunday (Neděle velikonoční) is a day of preparations for Easter Monday. Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they haven’t done so before, and boys prepare their pomlázkas!
Easter Monday Easter Monday (Pondělí velikonoční) is a day off, the day of the pomlázka. The origin of the pomlázka tradition (pomlázka meaning both the whip and the tradition itself) dates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning is to chase away illness and bad spirits and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young pussywillow twigs. Boys would whip girls lightly on the legs and possibly douse them with water, which had a similar symbolic meaning. An Easter carol, usually asking for an egg or two, would be recited by the boy while whipping. The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka. As the boys progressed through the village, their bags filled up with eggs and their pomlázkas were adorned with more and more colorful ribbons. Happy Easter! - Veselé Velikonoce! S.P.J.S.T. breaks ground on expansion

Facility only one of its kind in Central Texas
Construction on the 36-room expansion to the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility in Taylor began Thursday, March 26, 2009, at a groundbreaking ceremony for the project, expected to be complete by February 2010. The expansion will add between 16 and 20 jobs and increase the facility’s capacity to 60 residents from 24. Waiting lists for the facility consistently rise to more than 40 candidates, which shows the need for more space according to Administrator Woody Richards. The $6.86 million project — down from the previous estimate of $8.25 million —will retain all features in the original plan, though managers were able to shave more than $1 million from the project by using a competitive general contractor, EBCO Ltd. Acquiring the money to fund the project was not easy, Richards said, and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board of Directors was lucky to find an ally with Capital One. “They were not injured (in the financial market) as much as a lot of people were,” Richards said. “We got this funding through (bank) bonding, non-profit bonding, which are tax-exempt bonds.” The S.P.J.S.T.’s nature as a non-profit organization is an advantage when it comes to handling money.

to serving the people in the Taylor area as well as surrounding communities and even other parts of the state.” The new expansion will have more amenities, and the decor and structure will be more appealing, attractive, and spacious. The appearance of the existing facility will change dramatically. Pi Architects of Austin, which specializes in building independent and assisted living and long-term care facilities, is heading up the project’s innovative design by incorporating new ideas into the expansion. For example, the facility will have workout rooms to maintain physical fitness. There will be eight different types and sizes of rooms to meet different needs of residents. Hallways will be separated into different pods. Each area will be decorated differently to maintain ease of identification for the residents. In addition, each pod will have its own name to assist with identification. Entry to the facility will be changed and improved with covered loading areas to allow easy access to buses and cars. Landscaping will also be improved with more trees, bushes,
Houston. “They don’t go around spending millions of dollars like this on projects,” Richards said. For-profit assisted living facilities exist in Granger, Bartlett, Georgetown and Round Rock, but the S.P.J.S.T. facilities in Taylor are the only non-profits of their kind in East Williamson County, Richards said. Rooms in the expansion will range between 506 and 923 square feet and will be priced between $3,000 and $4,100 per month. —SPJST—
Since there are no corporate entities or owners providing for the S.P.J.S.T. facilities, revenue does not rise above the administrative level. Because of this model, the money stays under the supervision of the organization, which in turn is able to keep enhanced staff and provide quality care for residents, Richards said. The business model will also allow S.P.J.S.T. to manage the long-term loan easier. The rent acquired through new residents of the expansion should pay for the project alone, Richards said previously. The expansion is one of a kind, Richard said, especially since the nearest S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility is in Needville, about 43 miles southwest of
and flowers planted by professional landscapers. Sprinklers will be incorporated to assure proper watering. The dining room will also be enlarged to serve 60 residents’ meals. “It’s going to be one of the most beautiful living facilities in this part of the state,” Rest Home Administrator Woody Richards said. “We feel there’s a high demand for that service, and people have continued to approach us for the rooms. Ours are staying full all the time.” He added that with the money acquired through rent, the addition should “pay for itself.” EBCO Construction from Cameron, Texas, is the project’s contractor. The company also built the original assisted living facility in Taylor. Capital One Bank is funding the expansion through tax-exempt bonds in the amount of $6,860,000. “The individuals who now reside in S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living experience things they have never done and visit places they have never been at their
age,” Assistant Administrator Diane Volek said. Transportation for outings is provided by the facility. The facility’s social director plans and chauffeurs residents to all types of places and events. “Dining and culinary experiences are exceptional,” Assistant Administrator Volek said. “The residents select meals prepared by two outstanding chefs.” Residents bring their furniture and decorate their rooms to suit themselves. Rooms are wired for telephones, televisions, computers, and all have audio safety systems that enable residents to summons assistance when there is that need. Rooms also have independent heat and cooling systems. “It’s very exciting for Taylor and the population that needs facilities like
this,” Assistant Administrator Volek added. “It’s going to be very beautiful, and it’s very needed in this area.” S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, Inc. is a non-profit organization which owns and operates nursing homes located in Taylor and Needville, Texas. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, Inc. also owns and operates S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor. “The mission of our rest homes/assisted living facilities is to provide quality care for those in need,” Board President Victorick added. “I think we are doing this and will continue to do so in the years to come.” He said that the directors’ next goal is to upgrade the nursing home so that it will meet the quality of the new assisted living facility. “We have an excellent group of individuals serving in the administrative positions of our organization who have provided the insight to let the Rest Home Board know what is needed, and we feel we are in a position to provide these needs for those who have reached an age of retirement,” Board President Victorick said. “We look forward to providing this special care through a dedicated staff and administration who continue to strive to provide the quality care which we feel is of utmost importance.” —SPJST—

If any member happens to be in the Austin area, please feel free to stop by, lend a hand, or just visit. Likewise, if anybody wants to be on the work schedule that day, please call me (210) 413-3053. Join Hands Day is May 2 Has your lodge made plans to get involved in Join Hands Day on May 2? It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together. I have heard of many wonderful projects being planned for this date. If your lodge has not made plans, you still have time to schedule a project in your community. Please note that the $100 incentive for your lodge to participate is still available as long as you register your event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator by May 1. Unlike in previous years, you need to register your project only once to be
eligible in the judging for the Excellence Award. You may register prior to Join Hands Day or you can register your project following Join Hands Day. Ten awardees are selected from the registered volunteer projects that develop youth and adult partnerships on Join Hands Day. Each winning project receives a $1,000 check and an engraved glass award. Coordinating groups choose how the funds are used. Some organizations find it appropriate to donate the money to the beneficiary of the project or another benevolent cause. Others choose to save it as seed money for next year’s event. The criteria in selecting Excellence Award recipients, the most important consideration is the quality of the youth and adult partnership in planning and executing the event. Other criteria include the quality of the project to the neighborhood or to persons in need and the effectiveness of the mobilization group. Remember, you must register not later than June 1 to be eligible for any awards. Go to www.joinhandsday.org, click on “locate a project,” and then go to the left “Why Participate” and click on “project registration.” If you need additional information, please contact Tammy or me. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. Any members who are not involved in a Join Hands Day project are encouraged to come to ENC at Cooper Farm to participate in an SPJST Join Hands Day. State Youth Director John Hoelscher is currently working on a list of projects which need attention.
District Spring Meetings Several district spring meetings are yet to come. These meetings are a great opportunity to learn more about SPJST events and opportunities in your district. It is also an excellent opportunity to renew old friendships and create new friends. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district and meet your fellow SPJST members in your district.

Lodge 47, Seaton member Margie Niekamp enjoys birthday surprises
Margie Marek Niekamp celebrated her 70th birthday on February 7, 2009, on a cruise ship with her children and her oldest granddaughter (who was a great cabinmate). They cruised to Cozumel and Progresso, Mexico. In Cozumel, they toured the island and saw the gorgeous Caribbean Sea and were shown where and how the people live and earn a living. In Progresso, the tour consisted of old buildings dating back to the 15th Century. One was a magnificent Catholic church that was actually holding mass at the time of the tour and another which is actually being used for their government offices. The cruise was a first for many of the family members and was a fun and memorable time. The last night was a frightful memory with the rest
of the family being awakened by Janie at 4 a.m. with the news that the ship was on fire. All passengers were directed to the muster station to await w o r d from the Captain. Lodge 48 Beyersville: Wuensikars win plumbing battle
Lodge 48, Beyersville continues with its plans for renovating the hall. Bobby Wuensche and Robert Leshikar—the Wuensikars, their team name, almost got divorced during the week of March 6. They volunteered their week to getting the men’s bathroom fixed. This was attempted in cooperation with a real live plumber, but through no fault of anyone, as life would have it, Murphy’s law of averages prevailed. You see, Murphy said that anything that could go wrong, will, and it did. The plumber and the Wuensikar team had the new urinals (including a child-sized one) installed, and all the pipes redone, etc.; but alas, upon the first flush, all of their work went down the drain. Did you see that one coming? So off came the tile that was placed on the wall, off came a section of the back of the building, and out came the pipes, etc. Meanwhile, down came the rain that we needed ever so badly. But the team prevailed, and the men’s bathroom was ready for usage for the
District Two Spring Meeting. The ladies were invited into never-never land for a tour of the men’s facilities to see the wonder of modern technology. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the ladies decided to form a committee after Robert suggested it so that we could update the ladies bathroom to be competitive to the men’s. Juanette, Paula, and Donna Vanecek agreed to serve in this capacity. The men asked for a tour upon completion. We want to remind our adult members to help the youth club on May 2 for Join Hands Day. This is a nationwide effort to combine the youth and adults of the community to work together for the good of the less fortunate in our community. Beyersville will again collect food for the food pantry at a booth set up outside of Wal-Mart the morning of May 2. If you cannot assist us in working, then please send a check or come by and donate cash or food items to help us raise as much money as possible for this cause. Lodge 204 Stephenville honors 50-year member
The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met on Sunday, March 15, 2009, with seven members present and a very good meeting and a good meal afterwards. Yours truly received his 50-year pin at this meeting. Yes, it has been a long time since the first time I attended a meeting at an SPJST lodge, but it has been fun. I hope that there will many more. Things were different in 1959. The average cost of a house was $12,400; wages were about $5,010; a gallon of gas was 25 cents; and a loaf of bread was 20 cents. This is what some call the “good old days.” Yes, there were some good days with everyone working together. There will be some good old days again. Next Meeting—April 19 The next meeting will be on Sunday, April 19 at the Koffee Kup Restaurant at 4 p.m. so mark your calendar, and try to be there. Well, we finally got some good rains in this part of the world so maybe the rest of the year will be better See you in the funny paper! Norman M. Kneschk President/Treasurer/Reporter —SPJST—
Easter crafts the entire family can enjoy
Easter is certainly about searching for hidden colored eggs and dressing up in your Easter best. However, it can also be a time to get crafty — dreaming up plenty of creative ways to decorate for and celebrate the holiday. Many people think Easter crafts begin and end at coloring eggs. But there are many other clever ideas that can bring fun and whimsy to this special day. Homemade Easter Bonnets Supplies:
• foam soup bowls • paper plates • ribbon
VӖSTNÍK
• glue • markers or crayons
Cut out the center of the paper plate and attach it to the bowl placed upside down, so that the bowl is the crown of the hat and the plate is the rim. Decorate with markers, ribbon and any other embellishments. Attach a piece of ribbon to serve as the strap. Easter Lambs Supplies: • • • •
black construction paper cotton balls chalk glue
Trace a child’s hand with the chalk on the black construction paper. Turn
the hand so that the four fingers are facing down to form the lamb’s legs and the thumb is the lamb’s head. Have the child glue cotton balls to form the soft wool. Bunny Headbands
Supplies: • pink, white, and a neutral colored construction paper • glue • stapler
Cut out a strip of paper from the neutral colored construction paper, long enough to encircle a child’s (or adult’s) head. Staple to secure. Cut out rabbit ears from the pink and white paper. Make the white ears slightly smaller than the pink so that they can be glued on top of the pink to repre-

Celebrate green for Easter
Easter is a time when families come together to celebrate in a secular way or embrace the start of the spring season. At a time when so much focus is put on rebirth and a new start, it may seem fitting to think about celebrating in an environmentally friendly manner.

• Go for minimally packaged products. Why not try making your own candy creations from chocolate molds? • Hide papier-mache or clay eggs. Plastic is certainly not very environmentally friendly. Make it a craft project for kids to mold eggs out of dough,

Youth Club Officer Elections in May All youth clubs are to elect their officers in May for the 2009-2010 youth year. At your April meeting, please inform your youth members about the positions that will be elected. Information on youth club officer positions and elections are in your Youth Club Handbook. Please note the new inserts for your youth handbook were handed out at Youth Leader’s Retreat. There were a couple of corrections that were made to the handbook. For the convenience of youth parents and children in your youth club, the new rule books will be put on the SPJST website— www.spjst.org. In the event that they do not have internet access, have them contact my office for a copy of the rule book.
Get Involved: Join Hands Day is May 2 Has your lodge made plans to get involved in Join Hands Day on May 2? It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together. If your youth club has not made plans, you still have time to schedule a project in your community. Please note: The $100 incentive for your lodge to participate is still available as long as you register your event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator by May 1. Unlike in previous years, you need to register your project only once to be eligible in the judging for the Excellence Award. You may register prior to Join Hands Day or you can register your project following Join Hands Day. Ten awardees are selected from the registered volunteer projects that develop youth and adult partnerships on Join Hands Day. Each winning project receives a $1,000 check and an engraved glass award. groups choose how the funds are used. Remember, you must register no later than June 1 to be eligible for any awards. Go to www.joinhandsday.org, click on “locate a project,” and then go to the left “Why Participate” and click on “project registration.” If you need additional information, please contact Assistant to the FAC Tammy Martinez or State FAC Chester Jenke. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. Any members who are not involved in a Join Hands Day project are encouraged to come to ENC at Cooper Farm to participate in an SPJST Join Hands Day. I am currently working on a list of projects, which need attention.

The Texas State Capitol: Where It All Comes Together
The Governor is head of the Executive branch and the leader of the State. The Governor works with the 31 State Senators and 150 State Representatives to pass laws that will help the State and citizens of Texas. The Governor’s job includes representing Texas at various ceremonies. Before any bill can become a law, it must pass through the Governor’s office, where it will be signed into law.
ust as SPJST lodges and youth clubs are governed by their elected officers, so too are the people of Texas governed by their elected officials. The Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Speaker of the House, Senators and The Judicial branch is made up of different courts located throughRepresentatives all have their offices at the Texas State out the state. The court leaders decide the meaning of laws, how they Capitol in Austin. The Capitol is one of the most important build- are applied, and whether they break the rules of the Constitution. If a perings in Texas. It is important for its architecture, its history and its function as the center of Texas government.
The Texas State Government is divided into three groups. Each branch plays an important role in making sure that the State of Texas runs smoothly. The three branches of government are as follows: The Executive Branch, The Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch.
son or group is found guilty of breaking a law, the Judicial system decides how they should be punished.
The Legislature is the lawmaking branch of the government. With so many people living in Texas, it is important to have some rules that everyone must follow. These rules are called laws, and they are designed to help everyone live together. The Legislature is the branch of government that votes on whether or not a bill should be included in the Texas Constitution as a new law. The Texas Legislature meets every two years to do its job. When the representatives and senators meet, it is called being “in session.” The 81st Session of the Texas Legislature was called to order on January 13, 2009. This is a busy time at the Capitol as many people are in and out of the building every day, touring the facility as well as meeting with the senators and representatives and helping them to write the laws that will govern our state. The session will end on Monday, June 1, 2009. Sources: http://www.senate.state.tx.us, http://www.kids.house.state.tx.us
The Texas State Capitol is located in Austin. It took six years to build the fantastic four-story building completed in 1888 at a cost of more than $3 million. The building also has an extension that is completely underground.
Time to put on your thinking caps! If you were elected to serve as a state senator or representative, what are some of the laws that you would like to see passed? Use a separate sheet of paper to write your answer. Select responses will be printed in the Vestnik.

DYCs to sponsor games at April 25 ENC event
Dear Readers, I am really excited about the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) “Czech Us Out” to be held at Cooper Farm on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The place is absolutely beautiful. I hope you make plans to come out and see where our SPJST youth and adults will be spending a lot of time. You will not be disappointed. At the Youth Leaders’ Retreat this past weekend, each District Youth Counselor was asked to sponsor at least one game or money-making project on April 25 with the proceeds going towards the ENC fund. We want the youth to have lots of fun while they are visiting their future camp. We are hoping many youth clubs will also join in. The DYCs have given me a list of games they plan to bring: fish pond, ball throw, bean bag toss, ring toss, and face painting along with a snowcone machine and popcorn. We ask that you bring everything needed for your game along with the prizes. If you need a table for the game and have room, please bring one along with your lawn chairs. Also, a poster with your game info will also be helpful. Tickets will be sold at a booth for 50 cents each. Please contact me if you are willing to have a booth. This will help us in having a variety of games, and we can have your spot ready for you when you arrive at Cooper Farm. Please feel free to email me pkoslovsky@yahoo.com or call (254) 985-2396 if you have any questions or suggestions. This is a youth state fund-raiser for the ENC. We hope to see many of you on April 25. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—
District Two postpones Core Challenge
Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Two Core Challenge scheduled for Sunday, April 19, 2009, has been postponed. We hope to reschedule later in the fall. April is a very busy month, and I am hoping with the Core Challenge date being free everyone will make plans to attend the SPJST Education and Nature Center’s “Come Czech Us Out” event at Cooper Farm on Saturday, April 25. I am also hoping our cancellation might give SYD John a day off. How well we all know he deserves it! We appreciate all the time and work John is doing to make the ENC at Cooper Farm a reality. Lodge 30, Taiton youth visits Space Center
Dear Vestnik Readers, I hope that everyone had a great spring break. My mom and I went to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. It was awesome! We spent the whole day there and barely got to see everything. I even got to stand right next to a huge rocket. This rocket was the Saturn V. It never went into space, but it was pretty cool anyway. My favorite part of the day was when I got to simulate landing a space shuttle. It was really hard. Dylan Treumer —SPJST—

History of the stone sign: Sokol Havlicek-Tyrs By David Slovak Lodge 25, Ennis
Sokol Havlicek-Tyrs begins September 17, 1911, with the merger of Sokol Miroslav Tyrs, organized Jan 23, 1903, and Sokol Karel Havlicek organized August 6, 1904. Sokol Havlicek Tyrs laid the cornerstone of its new building on October 11, 1911, at 2619 Lawndale Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Sokol Vysehrad merged in 1914 and Sokol Komensky in 1921 on the 10th anniversary. In 1926, a new building took place with additions of a new front, balcony and other rooms. That is when new stone markers were inserted with the name “Sokol Havlicek-Tyrs.” In August 1973, the building was sold. One year later, in June 1974, the building was destroyed by fire. Now the story begins! A phone call by a member living in the neighborhood of the building alerted Joseph J. Janecka that a wrecking crew was demolishing it. Joseph, a former president of the Czech Philatelic Society and an avid collector of

Czechoslovak memorabilia, tried in vain to muster interested members to help rescue at least the stonework and sign. No one volunteered, so Joseph hurried to the building and immediately began negotiating with the foreman to save the sign. The wrecking ball was just ready to start on the front of the building. Joseph talked the foreman into giving him the sign, but he needed $200 to take it down and load it onto his pickup truck. Tires nearly flat, Joseph slowly drove to his Ogden Avenue sheet metal shop. Employees helped unload the sign where it remained unnoticed under a car shed until 1990. In May, on Memorial Day 1990, Jerry and Henrietta Milan visiting in Berwyn, Illinois, attended a ceremony at the CSA Building. They met Joseph and his wife Erma and began talking about collections of Sokol postcards and other artifacts. Joseph mentioned the Sokol Havlicek -Tyrs sign and invited us to see it. Joseph was very concerned about the fate of this incredible piece of art and history. He said he wished someone could make use of it. Henrietta and Jerry knew the exact place for its new home—Sokol Karel Havlicek Borovsky and the Tyrs Pool in Ennis, Texas. Jerry and Joseph struck a deal for the $200 that it cost him to have it

saved. The next problem was how to get it to Texas; Joseph’s pickup was out of the question! Contact with Brother Larry Laznovsky brought about a plan. He contacted Raymond Zapletal at Leggett and Platt, a mattress company in Ennis, who arranged for a truck “deadheading” back from the Chicago area to pick it up. Jerry and Emil Milan flew to Chicago where they stayed with relatives Annette and Bill Schabowski.
They gathered tools and materials, met Joseph and Erma, built crates for each piece and finished just as the truck pulled up. Photos were taken to record the event. The sign was gingerly loaded, and it was off to its new home in Ennis where devoted members waited to help with the unloading. The sign was stored from 1991 to 2008 in the Sokol storage building. Finally, with the excitement of the

Southern District hosting the 2009 Sokol Slet and International Sport and Cultural Festival, Henrietta felt many visitors would want to come see the sign. She had her son, Rome Milan, draw a design that would adhere to the architectural concept of the building. A committee approved the two markers, and the project was in motion. After many meetings and trips to Ennis, Jerry and Henrietta, Karl van Hulst, Larry Laznovsky, and Sam Pleiner staked out sites and found matching brick. Adam Fuentes of ABF Concrete was hired to do the work, and the project was off and running. It was a real thrill to watch as each brick and parts of the stone were cemented into place. The workers struggled with the weight of the pieces. It took eight men to manhandle the Sokol emblem to its place. Surely it would fall and knock down the entire structure . . . but they made it! As they were near the closing, Larry said, “Henrietta, I can’t believe you didn’t think of putting in a time capsule.” She said, “I can’t believe you thought of it.” So Larry dashed inside the building, and in minutes came out with a clean wine bottle and cap. Jerry and Henrietta enclosed photos and information, and the “time capsule” was sealed inside forever. Photos were taken. Then, the thought came that maybe the Karel and the Borovsky should be added? Where and who could match the font and color? Arlington Cast Stone —that’s who! Nick Eisen was contacted. He became involved, made a
trip to Ennis with cast samples, matched the font (even Czech fonts) and called to say “come pick up Karel and Borovsky.” They were delivered to Adam, inserted, and the project was completed on January 8, 2009. The Milan family is proud to have helped to preserve this small portion of Sokol Havlicek-Tyrs and the glorious history of the American Sokol. They dedicated these signs as monuments, in “honor of Sokol pioneers and leaders” who gave their time, energy, talents, and dedication in order to perpetuate the future of Sokol for generations to come. Nazdar! (on to success)
Editor’s Note: Jerry, Henrietta, Rome and Emil Milan and Bill and Annette Schabowski are all members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Larry Laznovsky and Sam Pleiner is a member of SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis. Raymond Zapletal is a member of Lodge 25, Ennis. SPJST is a proud sponsor of The 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival™ set for June 23 to 28 in Fort Worth, Texas! —SPJST—

Early Risers ABC of Czech
Early starts normal for Czechs,
especially country dwellers. Czechs are early risers, something often credited to the 19th century emperor Franz Joseph, a reputed insomniac who insisted all the members of his court be ready to start business every morning at 6 a.m. They say the sovereign’s habit trickled down to the entire population of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; to some extent, at least, that tradition lives on in this part of the world. When I first came here (Czech Republic) in the summer of 1992, I once spent the night in a block of flats in a small town in Šumava and was surprised by the hub-bub that started around 5 a.m.; through the thin panelák walls, you could hear doors closing and the lift going pretty much non-stop. Leaving a while later, I passed a factory that sounded like it was all systems go. Honestly, I hadn’t a clue what was going on; it wasn’t, it seemed to me, the town where time stood still, but the town where everybody’s clocks were several hours fast. Nearly 17 years later, factories around the Czech Republic are still firing on all cylinders at an ungodly hour. At least, those in rural parts are, according to an interesting survey published recently in the newspaper “Mladá fronta Dnes.” It seems at what time Czechs start the day depends to a large extent on where they live. In the country, 25 percent of people are already out of bed at 5 a.m.; 6 a.m. is the average time at which rural types’ feet hit the floor,
and by 7 a.m. a full 70 percent are up. In fact, 7 a.m. is the average time that work commences down the country. At that hour, nearly half of the Czech Republic’s city slickers have yet to be roused from the land of zeds by their alarms. But the country folk are no fools. The upside of stamping (or more likely swiping) your card extremely early is that you’re heading home when your urban cousins are just getting back from lunch. Many go home at – wait for it – 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. at the latest (the poll suggests that only 30 percent of country people are still at work at 3 p.m.). That, of course, gives them more time to enjoy the afternoon or just get a few things done. At the end of the day, 40 percent of country folk are asleep by 10 p.m., at least an hour earlier that urbanites. One sociologist interviewed by “Mladá fronta” said changing lifestyles could well lead to a reduction in the “time difference” between town and country. But, he said, it is unlikely that urban and rural types in the Czech Republic will ever find themselves setting their alarms for the same time in the morning. — Ian Willoughby Radio Prague

Czech Easter Bread
Source: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/ Houska/Photo-Gallery.aspx
Houska - Bohemian Sweet Bread - Czech Easter Bread - is a traditional Czech recipe for a classic sweet yeasted dough flavored with lemon zest, raisins and nuts that is shaped into a three-layer round pyramid, glazed with milk and egg, and oven baked until golden. This decorative Bohemian sweet bread is a beautiful edible bread sculpture. It’s not easy to make, but is sure to impress your guests! Try serving it warm for breakfast. This recipe produces an impressive pyramid of nutmeg- and mace-spiced sweet bread, fragrant with lemon zest. The full recipe is presented here, and we hope you enjoy this clas-

Recently, this photo was found in some old files in the Czech Heritage Museum, and it brought up many questions. This is obviously an SPJST team, but when did they play and where? Also, we would like to know the names of the team members. If you can help us solve the mystery or give us any information, please call one of the museum staff members at the SPJST Home Office. We would love to hear from you. Also, do you want a copy of this picture? The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is now offering photo services. Copies of most photos in our collection, ranging in size from four by six inches to 16 by 20 inches, can be purchased through the museum for a nominal fee. Stir in the butter until melted; let cool to lukewarm. In a small mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes. In another small bowl, combine 2 whole eggs with the egg yolk; beat lightly. In a large mixing bowl, mix together 4 cups flour, white sugar, salt, lemon zest, mace and nutmeg. Make a well in the center of this mixture and pour in

the cooled milk, yeast mixture and beaten eggs. Beat well until a loose dough forms. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 3 hours. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough and gradually incorporate the remaining cup of flour. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Divide dough into 3 portions; 1 small, 1 medium and 1 large (or one the size of a tangerine, one the size of an orange and one the size of a grapefruit). Cut the largest piece of dough in half and roll it out into 2 long ropes about 30 inches long. Twist the ropes together and place into a 8 inch diameter spiral and place it on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Cut the medium size piece of dough in half and roll out into 2 ropes about 20 inches long each. Twist the ropes together and place in a ring on top of the first circle of dough. Roll the smallest piece of dough into a rope about 12 inches long. Coil this rope on top of the other dough. The completed loaf should look like a pyramid. Place the uncovered loaf in an unheated oven to rise until doubled in size, about 2 hours. Remove the loaf from oven and preheat to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly beat the reserved egg white and brush over the loaf. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes or until lightly browned. If bread starts to brown too quickly, cover with aluminum foil and continue baking. Cool on wire rack. —SPJST—
