SPJST Member Service Program
Dear Members, SPJST cares greatly about you and your family. We want our members to think of SPJST as “number one” for service and fraternal benefits. With that in mind and to coordinate with the Heritage ’09 membership campaign, we proudly introduce the “SPJST Member Service Program.” Currently, we are training sales agents to review your certificate and ensure that all information we have at the Home Office is correct. Your sales agent of record on the insurance certificate will be contacting you soon to set up an appointment with you. If you do not have a sales agent of record, we will assign one to you. Sales agents will review items like name changes, contact information, beneficiary designations, and answer questions about your certificates and membership in general. We want to ensure that you will not encounter any problems in your time of need or that your loved one does not experience any time loss in collecting benefits on your SPJST certificate. Also, if you need more life insurance coverage, your agent will discuss coverage needs with you. When an agent calls, we kindly ask that you please allow time for the agent to review your certificate. If at any time you have any questions, please call the SPJST Insurance Department toll free (800) 727-7578. We look forward to serving you. Fraternally,

Bloomin’ Temple this weekend
Visit Temple this weekend—April
16 to 19—for a bloomin’ fun time at the Fourth Annual Bloomin’ Temple Festival in Downtown Temple. SPJST is sponsoring and coordinating the car show on Saturday. Last year, more than 130 beautiful vehicles entered the show. We are hoping to have another successful car show this year. We cordially invite you to come on out to the festival for a great time. Also, if you have a cool vehicle, shine it up and show it in the car show. Or, if you are interesting in judging, we have a place for you! Give me a call (254) 534-0807 or email melaniez@vvm.com. Bloomin’ Temple kicks off Thursday evening with a carnival. On Friday, the fun begins when gates open at 5 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. with KriticKill and Devon Allman’s Honeytribe. Flyleaf will headline Friday evening’s concert. Brooding beats and lunging riffs from guitarists Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya, bassist Pat Seals, and drummer James Culpepper frame Flyleaf's positive messages about overcoming adversity with powerful breathy and suddenly aggressive vocals from Lacey Moseley. This hard rock band emerged from the Central Texas music scene and within a few short years, had a gold record, three hit singles (“All Around Me,” “I’m So Sick,” and “Fully Alive”) and a critically acclaimed debut album. The band has traveled the world three times over with engagements in Japan, Australia, Europe, and the UK, while playing with the likes of Korn, Metallica, Deftones, Stone Sour, Atreyu, Velvet Revolver and many others along the way. Music lovers of all ages will appreciate the energy Flyleaf brings to the stage! Guitarist Jared is the husband of past SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club member Kathryn Cathey Hartmann.
Saturday includes the SPJST Car Show, a 5K and fun run, bike ride, Jaycees Square (Slovacek’s Sausage Cook-Off, wildlife area, KidFishing, and game warden’s trailer), KidsZone! (crafts, cooking and science table, games, face painting, karaoke, and yoga), Central Texas Has Talent! contest, cooking demonstrations, best burger contest, many arts/crafts/foods vendors, and music throughout the day. And, be sure to visit SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club at the Slovacek’s Sausage booth. Saturday evening’s entertainment begins at 7 p.m. includes two stages. The City stage will feature Django Walker, Wild Horses, and Jerry Jeff Walker. Jerry Jeff moved to Austin, Texas, in the early 1970s and reinvented himself as a Lone Star country-rocker. He became, along with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel, one of the arbiters of the internationally famous Austin musical community. Walker has developed a style of music he calls “Cowjazz” and is best known for singles like “Mr. Bojangles,” “Trashy Women,” and “Jaded Lover.” A country music legend comes to Temple! Sunday will include arts/crafts/ foods vendors, KidsZone!, cooking demonstrations, and pro wrestling. Entertainment will include Juanito Castillo, Juan Luis Fernandez, Robert Medrano and Mariachi Unico, and Vidal Donoso and El Barrio. The emcee is DJ Tony Suniga, “Godfather of Chicano Music Waves,” with Esther Valdez. Admission to the festival is $5 for a weekend pass (ages 12 and under no charge). Tickets can be purchased at festival gates: Gate 1 located at Avenue A and 7th Street and Gate 2 at Avenue B and 3rd Street. More festival information, including a map, schedule, and entry forms, is available at: www.bloomintemple.com

! For exercise I sleep in my chair under the television’s glaring stare for there’s nothing as enjoyable as watching tv and falling asleep while it’s talking to me There’s something about that steady drone it’s the best sedative I’ve ever known and when I can’t sleep in my regular bed I sleep like a baby by the tv instead
Makes no difference what channel they’re all about the same if you want entertainment it’s all pretty lame intellectually, it’s not very deep the one thing it’s good for is making me sleep
I settle down in my favorite chair prop up my feet act like I’m watching but I must be discreet in a few minutes I give up and succumb if my wife asks what I’m watching I just play dumb In a wake of white noise I fall fast asleep slowly sawing them bones piled up in a heap I’m under sedation on top the remote just catching my z’s and that’s all she wrote! —SPJST—

In Memory of Ted Marek
In Memoriam
Theodore (Ted) Joseph Marek, age 81, died at home in his sleep on April 6, 2009. He was born on December 28, 1927, to Frank and Rosie Skrivanek Marek in Caldwell, Texas. Ted was a third generation Czech-Texan and was very proud of his Czech heritage. Ted was a member of SPJST Ted Marek Lodge 155, Austin since 1944. He was appointed sales agent in 1984 and was elected lodge president in 1998, a position that he served until his death. Brother Ted also served as a delegate at SPJST Conventions in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. He also enjoyed being a member of the Austin Czech Historical Society. Ted graduated from Caldwell High School in 1945 and went on to the University of Texas at Austin. He became licensed as a CPA in 1966. He worked as an accountant for the private sector and an auditor for the State of Texas before joining Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in 1966 as the Director of Accounting. He became Comptroller in 1977 and Vice President of Finance and Management in 1981. He retired in 1993. Ted married Neldina Holubec on May 29, 1948, enjoying 60 years of marriage. This union was blessed with a son, daughter and two grandchildren. Ted and Nel were married in Austin and lived there for 18 years until moving to San Marcos in 1966 where he lived until his death. Ted loved to travel and kept a world map marking all the places he had visited. Besides traveling, he spent much of his time tending his beautiful orchids and other exotic plants. He found much joy in gardening and showing off his plants. Another lifelong hobby of his was photography. His life with his wife, children, and grandchildren is well-documented through pictures and videos. Ted is survived by his wife Neldina; son Larry Marek and wife Becky; daughter Janette Hall and husband
John; grandson Johnny Hall; granddaughter Jennifer Kruppa and husband Elliott. Ted was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Ted was a loyal member of the Austin Brethren Church until his death. His faith was very important to him. He demonstrated his faith and devotion by participating in many church leadership roles and remaining active in his church work even as his health deteriorated. He will be missed greatly, but we take solace knowing that he is in heaven with his Lord and Savior and happy to be reunited with his loved ones. Visitation was Wednesday, April 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos. District Five Spring Meeting this Saturday at Lodge 88, Houston
Dear Members, We had the Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting on Sunday, April 5, 2009. We had lots of people attend because we had an Easter egg hunt after the meeting. It was very windy which made it cold! At the meeting, we talked about the garage sale that we had on April 4. It was a great success. Thank you to all who helped and shopped! We are still selling tickets for the Relay for Life baskets. Please see any youth member or leader for ticket information. Lodge 25 Youth Club will make a huge donation from the tickets and garage sale proceeds. We will also walk for Relay for Life on April 24 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Texas Motorplex. We are happy to have any member join us to support such a great cause. It was announced that Jennifer Dvorak will be the new assistant youth leader soon. I can’t wait to see what new ideas she will bring to the meetings, but we are sad to see Margaret step down from being such a great leader. Last, but not least, Austen Holland was the only April birthday this month. Happy birthday, Austen! And, Hayley Slovak was the $1 bill drawing winner. Congratulations, Hayley, spend it wisely! The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 p.m. with the Easter egg hunt following. Refreshments were provided by the Juriks. They were very yummy. Thanks, Michael and Amanda! Lodge 25, Ennis youth: first hunt, first deer
Dear Members . . . or can I say Deer Members, This winter, I had a chance to go deer hunting with my grandpa. This was my first time ever to go deer hunting, and I was a little nervous. We got to the tree stand before daylight and waited for any signs of deer. My cousins and uncle went, too, and were doing the same in
their tree stands. Finally, the time came and Grandpa saw my chance to take a shot at my very first deer. I took her down on the first shot, and I was super excited. It was my first hunting trip and my first kill all in the same day! It was a short weekend trip but a very memorable one that I can thank my Grandpa Motley for. Fraternally, Dustin Motley —SPJST—

Many different materials are used, including as bee wax, straw (hay), water colors, onion peels and picture stickers. There are virtually no limitations in creating colorful kraslice.

Hippity, Hoppity! Easter Bunny Visits Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4, 2009 • Lodge 88, Houston
Dear Members, We dyed 30 dozen hard-boiled eggs on Friday night, April 3 and began decorating for our annual Easter party held on Saturday, April 4 at Lodge 88, Houston. There were a lot of people at the party—108 signed, in but Mrs. Linney doesn’t think everyone signed the reg-
ister sheet. Anyway, it was a nice day, not too hot and really pretty outside. We hunted eggs—hard-boiled and plastic-filled. Then, everyone got a chance to see the Easter Bunny and take pictures. When they visited with the bunny, they received a prize egg that had a number in it. The number went along with a
prize in their respective age group. I got a stuffed duck, and my brother got a plastic toy rake. We had a chance to guess the number of jelly beans in a container, and I won in my age group! We also drew for a basket, and Mrs. Clara Broz won it. She gave it to my little brother Keith. Thank you, Mrs. Broz! We all
enjoyed hot dogs with the trimmings, fresh fruit, chips, dip, veggies, and, of course, carrot cake! Thank you to Lodge 88 for sponsoring this party and all our parties! Fraternally, Allison Wockenfuss, age 12 Social Committee Chairman —SPJST—

Topolanek’s recent resignation midway through Prague’s six-month European Union presidency weakened his position in defending the project which, according to the latest polls, 70 percent of Czechs oppose. Despite popular opinion, the Czech government signed a treaty with the Bush administration last July to host a radar tracking system, one of two legs of the shield that would be based in Eastern Europe. Prague’s medieval castle — the picturesque backdrop for Obama’s address — is a special chateau even on a continent studded with them. The castle, the most treasured Czech symbol and the seat of the president’s office, was founded in the 9th century and is perched on a hill overlooking the capital and the Vltava River. Its most visible monument, St. Vitus Cathedral — where five saints are buried alongside Czech kings — dates to the 10th century. In his speech at Prague Castle, Obama said: “I have learned over many years to appreciate the good company and
good humor of Czech people in my hometown of Chicago. Behind me is a statue of a hero of the Czech people—Tomas Masaryk. In 1918, after America had pledged its support for Czech independence, Masaryk spoke to a crowd in Chicago that was estimated to be over 100,000. I don’t think I can match Masaryk’s record, but I’m honored to follow his footsteps from Chicago to Prague. For over a thousand years, Prague has set itself apart from any other city in any other place. You have known war and peace. You have seen empires rise and fall. You have led revolutions in the arts and science, in politics and poetry. Through it all, the people of Prague have insisted on pursuing their own path and defining their own destiny. “We are here today because enough people ignored the voices who told them that the world could not change. We are here today because of the courage of those who stood up and took risks to say that freedom is a right for all people, no matter what side of a wall they live on, and no matter what they look like.
“When nations and peoples allow themselves to be defined by their differences, the gulf between them widens. When we fail to pursue peace, then it stays forever beyond our grasp. To denounce or shrug off a call for cooperation is an easy and cowardly thing. That is how wars begin. That is where human progress ends. “The voices for peace and progress must be raised together. Those are the voices that still echo through the streets of Prague. Those are the ghosts of 1968. Those were the joyful sounds of the Velvet Revolution. Those were the Czechs who helped bring down a nuclear-armed empire without firing a shot. “Human destiny will be what we make of it. Here, in Prague, let us honor our past by reaching for a better future. Let us bridge our divisions, build upon our hopes, and accept our responsibility to leave this world more prosperous and more peaceful than we found it.” Jan Tamas, spokesperson for the Nonviolent Movement against the Bases, said: “We recognize that Pres-
ident Obama is making an effort to diminish nuclear arsenals and is looking for a diplomatic way to face international tensions, but we ask that he listen to the voice of the vast majority of the Czech population and finally give up on Star Wars. Giorgio Schultze, another opponent of the shield, said: “Security issues are important, but they can only be solved if the United States, Europe, and Russia collaborate. A project which really aims for international security cannot be solely military.” —SPJST—
