Celebrating People in Action captures the meaning of this signature week: Honoring the people who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities. Established in 1974 by former President Richard Nixon, National Volunteer Week has grown exponentially in scope each year drawing the support and endorsement of all subsequent United States presidents, governors, mayors and other respected elected officials. National Volunteer Week 2009, Celebrating People in Action, presents an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities alike to celebrate the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service. National Volunteer Week embodies the energy and power volunteers evoke on a daily basis as they lead by example—not only encouraging the people they help, but motivating others to serve as well. The 36th annual National Volunteer Week, April 19 to 25, honors SPJST volunteers who tirelessly share their

The All-American Volunteer
It’s National Volunteer Week, and
it’s a perfect time to say thank you to SPJST’s volunteers throughout the state. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and energy with SPJST and with all community organizations. Volunteers are one of America’s — and certainly SPJST’s — most important assets. About 60.8 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2006 and September 2007, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. That represents more than a quarter of the entire United States population. Volunteerism is a great thing. It makes you feel good, and you can make a big difference. And, to those who utilize volunteers—please don’t forget those two very most important words to a volunteer. Those two words mean an awful lot to someone who gives of their time and talent freely. Those two words let the volunteer know that you appreciate him/her and, oftentimes, keep him/her coming back. Thank you, volunteers! This is your week. Celebrate your good deeds. The All-American Volunteer Listen my children, and you shall hear a story of the All-American Volunteer. It all began back many a year with the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Volunteer soldiers, and many, many more, built America from shore to shore. Why is America such a wonderful place? Because volunteers are the base!
Volunteers share their talents and time, for their efforts they ask not a dime! They serve their cities, county, or state. The value of their services are hard to rate. When called to duty, their response is quick. They rock cradles, serve hungry, and heal our sick. To try to set measure would be a waste. There is no dollar value that can be placed. Why do so many people serve as volunteers? There are so many reasons, some bring us to tears. For whatever their reasons for serving may be, Volunteers are the answer and always will be. There isn’t enough money to pay for what they do Just remember to say “Thanks” when they come to help you! —2000 Volunteer Appreciation Party “Volunteers Leading the Way,” written by Mona Ray, Volunteer Coordinator

Dear Vestnik Readers, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton, was held on Sunday, April 5, 2009. What a wonderful and busy meeting. The meeting included special recognition of our 50year members and an age 96 member. We also had the privilege of a “note burning” for an add-on to the outside building. Then, our afternoon could not have ended in a more special way than to see smiles of our young ones after their Easter egg hunt. Those smiles grew even bigger when the long awaited Easter bunny made his appearance. I understand he had a very busy day and was hopping a little late. Mr. Bunny, we thank you for stopping by and visiting with all of us. President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The flags were presented by youth club members Josef Morris and Justin Davis who led us in the Pledge of Alle-

Lodge 154, Fort Worth hosted its annual Easter picnic with Sokol Fort Worth. The afternoon started with everyone stuffing themselves with great food and all the fixin’s! Easter eggs were hidden for the children’s egg hunts. We had a bit of excitement when we discovered a pair of Kildees and their four baby chicks that were nested right in our egg hunt area. After some persuasion, they decided to relocate to a new home with a dis-

In the younger division the prize egg winners were Kassie Bell, Macy Hix, Reid Jones, Macy Jones, and Sophie and Sydney Milan. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their community. It’s about meeting our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a community, with all of us working together. This year, the President of the United States will again sign a proclamation in support of National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Institute and HandsOn Network. This special week was designated by executive order by President Nixon. TPMM has home in Schulenburg
Big news, folks! The Texas Polka Music Museum (TPMM) has obtained building space for its museum. This was the big excitement at the TPMM annual fund-raiser polka fest held Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Fireman’s Hall in Industry, Texas. It was a nice dance, complete with a silent and live auction that made the day entertaining for everyone. Music was a highlight, too, with the Travelers and Central Texas Sounds donating their time to the TPMM cause. But the biggest excitement for the day was the announcement by TPMM that arrangements have been completed for the museum building. TPMM President Glen Chervenka and members of the TPMM board, made the announcement at 3 p.m. Chervenka reported that an agreement has been signed with the Executors of the R.E. Wolters estate to occupy the Wolters Building at 625 North Main Street in downtown Schulenburg. The historic building is just across the street from the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. It has about 2,700 square feet of space on the first floor, and about the same on the second floor. TPMM will take possession on May 1. There is work to be done including carpeting and setting up the museum displays. The Texas Polka Music Museum (TPMM) will feature exhibits showcasing instruments, pictures, costumes, artifacts, and histories of Texas polka bands and polka DJs.
Opening of the TPMM depends upon volunteer labor and finances, but may be about at year’s end. Volunteers are needed to help get the museum up and running. TPMM has been collecting Texas polka band memorabilia, but now that effort continues in earnest. TPMM is accepting items such as photos of bands with information about the bands, recorded music, arrangements for the band performances, band schedules and more. TPMM also needs information about Texas polka DJs and Texas polka song writers. All donated items are tax deductible and should be sent to Texas Polka Music Museum,7088 Creek Shadows Drive, Bryan, Texas, 77808. If you would like to participate, please contact Herb Schneider (281) 807-3244; Glen Chervenka (979) 5892600; any TPMM board member; or email Texaspolkamuseum@aol.com. You may also visit www.texaspolkamuseum.com. Editor’s Note: The preceding article written by John Rivard was originally published in the Texas Polka News. —SPJST—
