Lodge 24, Cyclone member Taylor Jungmann helps steer Texas to College World Series
If you tune into this week’s 2009 NCAA Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, you will see SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone member Taylor Jungmann who is pitching for the University of Texas. In the game against Texas Christian University on Monday, June 8, 2009, Taylor allowed two hits over six innings and top-seeded Texas earned its first trip to the College World Series since 2005. The Longhorns won 5-2. “The game from our side of it was dominated by the pitching,” Texas Head Coach Augie Garrido commented. “Taylor Jungmann’s two-hit pitching kept us through the first six innings.” Taylor appreciated the run support. “We trust those guys as the bullpen,” he said. “We think those guys are going to go out and score runs every game. It felt good.” Senior 3B Matt Carpenter was impressed with Taylor’s performance. “I thought he threw all his pitches for strikes and kept the ball down most of the time and then he’d elevate with two strikes and that is tough to catch up to. To be able to handle that situation with a chance to go to Omaha

Czech Heritage Museum to close temporarily
The Czech Heritage Museum, located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office building at 520 North Main in Temple, Texas, will be permanently closing for tours beginning Friday, June 26, 2009, to prepare for its move to the new museum location. The museum, library, and archives has been located in the SPJST building since the opening of the state headquarters in 1971 and has enjoyed a tremendous growth in its collection and visitors. The museum began as an effort to preserve Czech cultural items in the 1960s and as the collection grew, so did
the need to display it. When the “new” SPJST offices opened in 1971, they included a space on the main floor for the museum. The collection grew beyond its space and was moved to the basement in 1981, where over 8,000 square feet allowed for expansion. Today, there are over 30,000 artifacts and 25,000 books in the collection. The library boasts the largest Czech genealogy collection in the State of Texas. In 2000, the decision was made to separate the museum and library from

young woman came to her mother for advice. Her life had become difficult, with one challenge after another. She was tired of fighting and struggling, and wanted to give up. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and put them on the stove. In the first, she placed carrots; in the second, eggs; and in the third, ground coffee beans. After 20 minutes, she turned off the burners. She placed the boiled carrots on a plate. Next to them, she placed the eggs. Then, she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity—boiling water. The carrots had gone in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but had softened and become weak. The egg had been fragile, but had come out hardened. The ground coffee beans, however, were unique. Instead of letting the water change them, they had changed the water. “When trials and adversity knock on your door, how do you respond?” she asked her daughter. “Do you become soft like the carrot, hardened like the egg, or, like the coffee, do you change the situation into something better?”

A Brief History Honoring Dad The “mother” of Father’s Day was Sonora Smart Dodd, according to many historians. The daughter of a widowed Civil War veteran who had raised her on his own, Dodd came up with the idea when listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. She held her own special tribute for her father on June 19, 1910, in Spokane,
Washington, and began a campaign for an official celebration thereafter. Initially the idea of Father’s Day was met with skepticism. But in 1919, President Calvin Coolidge expressed support for the holiday, and in 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City to join the campaign. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1972, that President Richard Nixon officially recognized it as a national holiday. The official flower of Father’s Day is the rose: red for fathers who are still living, and white for fathers who have passed away.
Live Today Look to the present. The great disease of “I will be happy when . . .” is sweeping the world. You know the symptoms. You start thinking: I will be happy when I get that . . . new car . . . that promotion . . . status . . . money. The only way to cure the disease is to find happiness and meaning now. —Marshall Goldsmith

wife Adeline, and Arthur and Regina Peevey. We are always so delighted to have guests attend. The secretary and treasurer gave the their reports, and the reports were approved as read. The secretary stated that she needed to make a correction that we are purchasing the used tables and chairs from SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson instead of Robinson SPJST. So sorry for the mistake. We have plans to pick them up this week. Brother Willie and Sister Adeline had to leave early as they had a meeting at their Lodge 47, Seaton later that evening. Lodge 41 Port Lavaca joins hands to help establish VFD
Lodge 41, Port Lavaca’s Join Hands Day project was Sunday, May 3, 2009, in the rural community of Port Lavaca at the Knights of Columbus Hall and the Six Mile Community Volunteer Fire Department (SMCVFD). Only a small portion of our membership is active in the lodge. We do not have a lodge building; therefore, our meetings are held courtesy of Six Mile Presbyterian Church. However, the lodge owns vacant land in this rural area. In January 2009 a longterm lease agreement was facilitated
and recorded at the county clerk’s office to lease this vacant property for establishing the Six Mile Community Volunteer Fire Department. May 3 was the first of many future fund-raisers held for the building fund for a fire station. The fund-raiser consisted of a noon meal of grilled pork tenderloin and trimmings plus a silent auction. Items for the silent auction were donated by members of SPJST, SMCVFD members, and individuals. Members of the SMCVFD and some SPJST members helped prepare the food. Other members sold tickets in advance, helped serve, and made dozens and dozens of kolaches plus helped clean up. The $100 from the SPJST Home Office was donated to the event, which was very successful. Participating in this event benefits the entire community and SPJST. Eventually, when the fire station is complete, the lodge will also have access to the building for meetings. (The pictures I took were not very good; therefore, I didn’t include any with writing.) Lodge 204 Stephenville sets June 27 get-together
Our May meeting was canceled because yours truly — the president — was in the hospital again and unable to be at the meeting. But, I am home again and doing a little better. I hope to be at the next meeting. I want to remind everyone that the next meeting will take place in the park at Stephenville on Saturday, June 27 starting at 1 p.m. The lodge will provide the meat for the meal so bring all of the family and have a good time in the park. We are hoping that there will be more of the members there as we will talk about the future of the lodge. Where do we go from here? This is your lodge, and we would like to hear from all of the members and give everyone the time to speak and say what they would like to do. Almost half of the year is gone. It
seems that time goes faster the older we get. Before you know it, it will be Christmas again. It has been raining more than last year, and I have a lot of grass to mow and am waiting for the wildflowers to finish blooming before I mow them down. Right now, I have a pretty flower garden in my front yard! I hope that everyone can come to the get-together in the park on the 27th. Norman M. Kneschk President/Treasurer/Reporter —SPJST—

Thanks for Your Support! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in District Three for the support you give to our youth. They are all very talented and gifted, and I am very proud of each and every one. You will find our children’s entries of arts and craft, music, dance, drama, and public speaking very competitive. That is why you will see why we are glad we have judges to do the job of selecting the very best to represent District Three at State YAD on August 1 in Temple, Texas. Please come and visit our District Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, June 2 at Lodge 84 and witness our talented kids. The knowledge these children project to me is just so powerful that I believe you must come and see how they shine.
District Three Camp July 24 to 27 in Whitney, Texas District Three has many other events coming up for the summer. Our camp this year will be in Whitney, Texas, at the Buffalo Ridge Camp on July 24 to 27. This will be our first time at this camp. New surroundings, trails, and activities are all being considered in the planning stages by my two assistants—Diana and Lynda. When they get through with all the planning, you can guarantee yourself that the children will be tired each night and will go home with many new stories to tell.
State YAD—August 1 in Temple If you have not made your reservations for State YAD on August 1 in Temple, Texas, I advise you to do so as soon as possible. There are not that many rooms blocked off at some of the hotels in Temple. Please mark your calendar to visit the SPJST State
Youth Achievement Day at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple to watch the children from all over the state compete for first place titles.
Thanks, Youth Leaders! With that in mind, I would like to thank all of my district youth leaders for a wonderful year they have given me. When I had deadlines to meet, you were very good about getting all your information in to me or to the Home Office Youth Department on time. Your hard work and dedication shows how wonderful District Three shines. With your support, our mission for the SPJST Youth Program has proven that each child in our district has been provided with a wellrounded educational, patriotic and social background. I am very proud of your children. So please come and enjoy what they have to offer. Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club reports on June activities
Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall celebrated its annual picnic on Sunday, June 7, 2009. The youth club had a wide variety of games this year with the new addition of Plinko, Pop-ALock bounce house, the train, and three games that Chaundra Mitchan got for us on loan. It was a lot of hard work, but we had a good time. Thank you to everyone who came out to help set up, clean up, and work these games. During the meeting prior to the picnic, we installed our new officers. We also took a list of names of the kids who will need a ride back from camp on July 15. If you were not able to attend this meeting and will need a ride back from camp, you can contact Patsy Koslovsky or myself to make arrangements. We are also looking for chaperones for camp. If you would like to chaperone, please contact Patsy as soon as possible. Camp forms are due no later than June 17. The youth club is in the process of making plans for a social for the weekend of November 14. The youth will be going to The Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, Texas. There are a total of five meetings prior to this trip. In order for a youth member to be eligible to go on this social, he/she will

need to attend four of the five meetings. I will need a definite head count at least by the July meeting so that I can start making plans. Our district outing is on June 28 at the new Temple water park located on Fifth Street. Your YAD cards are due at this time as well. If you are planning to do a talent, please be sure to perform it prior to this day. Our next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 6. This meeting will coincide with the mother lodge’s meeting in order to allow those of you who would like to attend the adult meeting to do so. Thank you again for all your hard work. • Combine reading with a fun excursion: Visit a museum and bring home a book about animals, science or art that you can then read together.
• Make it a counting day: Count your child's stuffed animals together. Count clothing items as you dress him or her. Go to the store together and have your child count the money to pay. Count cars on the road on the way there. • Bring science home: In advance of the day, take out a science experiment book from the library and then perform simple experiments at home together. For example, start growing a vegetable or plant from a seed and then chart the growth and draw pictures. • Act out stories: Use reading techniques that increase effectiveness, such as changing your voice for different characters and adding verbal sound effects. Talk about the story to
reinforce comprehension, and read it again because repetition helps children learn words.
“My older kids and I would act out the stories, playing parts, throwing on costumes from whatever we had in the closet,” says Jan Goldstein, the bestselling author of “The Bride Will Keep Her Name” and recipient of the President’s Award for his volunteer work with inner city youth. “I like to take on characters, accents, make them laugh or make it even spookier. British and Irish accents are my forte. And I do a mean cow,” he adds. When choosing books for your children, make sure to tie them to your child’s interests and that help them develop critical life skills. “I choose books for my eight-yearold that have distinctive voices that allow my daughter to find characters facing choices that come up in her life: How to choose a good friend. view prejudice. How to laugh at oneself,” says Goldstein. Above all, children need good role models when it comes to literacy. “Kids need to see their parents reading for pleasure and exercising their brains in different ways,” stresses Darling. Lodge 30, Taiton youth visit Texas Zoo with District Six
Dear Vestnik Readers, District Six youth enjoyed an outing to the Texas Zoo in Victoria on May 23, 2009. We really had a great time that afternoon. My favorite part was being able to pet the goats and watch the tigers. One was really aggravated and kept
pacing and jumping at the fence. My mom thought that was really cool. My least favorite part was watching the ducks. Thank you to Mrs. Bellanger for talking to us about the different animals. It was really interesting. —SPJST—

Fun Fatherʼs Day activities to stimulate your kidsʼ minds
(StatePoint) Father’s Day doesn’t just have to be a day for presents for Dad. It’s a great time for fun educational activities that parents can enjoy together with their kids. “Moms typically garner much of the spotlight when it comes to encouraging parents to read with their children and play educational games together. But participation by both parents is key,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder of the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL). “We needn’t forget that Dads need to step up to the plate, as well, encouraging their children to develop important reading and math skills.” Here are some great ideas from the NCFL for inexpensive and fun Father’s Day activities that can get kids thinking and learning:

The Oxman cometh Archive Letter from Prague Letter from Prague is a weekly letter about life in the Czech capital.
Perhaps the most common swear word in the Czech language sounds a bit strange to say the least to the uninitiated. The Czech word for ox or bullock is vůl, and spend any time in the company of young Czech men and probably very soon, and very frequently, you’ll hear the word in the vocative: ty vole, you ox. Essentially ty vole or simply vole is used, mostly by young Czech men, as a kind of filler word, just as Americans of a certain age seem to use the word like, like all the time. You might hear somebody say for instance, “Yeah, you ox, I was in the pub last night, you ox. Guess what, you ox? Pavel’s got a new girlfriend – you ox, she’s gorgeous!” Calling somebody an ox may seem rather tame to those of us used to fullblooded Anglo-Saxon swearing, but its meaning does depend on the context. Among friends ty vole is basically meaningless, a mere sign of informality and camaraderie. But if a stranger ad-

In 2001, with a gift from Louis and Oleta Hanus of Houston, a historic building at Third Street and French Avenue in Temple was purchased for the museum. After several years of planning, fund-raising and work, the building has been restored and is ready to house the museum. The official name of the museum has been changed to The Czech Heritage Mu-

dresses you as vole you should perhaps be on your guard. As I say, ty vole is used mostly by young men, though not exclusively. Older men, particularly the less educated, also use it quite frequently, as do some women. It must be said, though, that in general, Czech ladies really don’t use many nadávky or swear words, relatively speaking. They certainly use them less than the females where I come from. One day I heard a mother shout ty vole at her baby in his pushcart and was slightly shocked, though, I must admit, also slightly amused. Lukáš, a friend of a friend, employs the term about as often as it is humanly possible to use it, with one unusual twist: the habit is so ingrained and evidently unconscious that he can’t stop himself from saying ty vole when he speaks otherwise impeccable English. For this reason, he has been nicknamed Voleman. It is extremely odd hearing him speak English while knowing the provenance of his unusual verbal tick. But heaven knows what everybody else thinks when he says, nice to meet you, vole, or whatever. He might as well bark at the end of every sentence. seum and Genealogy Center. The staff of the museum and genealogy center began moving items to the new location in May, while maintaining displays in the SPJST building. The genealogy center has been completely reestablished in the Hanus Building and will be open to researchers during the transition time. At the present time, several items have been removed from the museum and the displays have diminished. In order to facilitate the move, it is necessary to close the museum until the reopening at the new location. The reopening is scheduled for September. Machus and Stasnys display Czech art at CHMGC
Darwin and Nancy Machu and John and Bennie Stasny recently delivered a special exhibition of the works of the renowned Czech painter/sculptor Jan Knebl featuring four original “artist” sketches to Temple to be displayed in the new Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The Machus and Stasnys received these sketches during the celebration of the opening of the Frenstat Museum in 2007. The sketches were saved from destruction during World War II by an ancestor of the donors, Alex and Alena Norsky of Tichna, Moravia, Czech Republic. It is the wish of the Norskys that the sketches be shared with Czechs in Texas. To comply with their wishes, the Machus and Stasnys restored, preserved, and framed the sketches. Their plan is to share these rare works of Czech art with Texans of Czech descent, by placing them in various venues where Czechs congregate. The Machus and Stasnys feel that the new Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center
offers the perfect venue for the maximum exposure of these rare sketches of Texans of Czech descent and other visitors to the Center.
About Jan Knebl (1866 - 1962) Jan Knebl was a famous Czech sculptor, painter and wood carver. He was born December 31, 1866, in Trojanovice pod Radhoštěm, Moravia, the son of Frantisek Knebl and Pavlina Žárská. Jan married Ježíšková and they had five sons: Bohuslav, Antonín, Josef, Václav, and Bohumir. At the time of his death on November 22, 1962, in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, Moravia, he had attained the grand age of 96 years. A graduate of the Advanced Woodworking College in Valašské Meziříčí, Jan worked for a short time with the sculptor, Pohlner, of Dvorce, and further honed his artistic ability by studying in Vienna, Znojmo and Budapest. When viewing his paintings and sculptures, it is obvious that his inspiration was the Wallachian regional culture. The motifs for his statues and
paintings depict the Wallachian way of life. After the completion of his studies, he returned to Frenštát where he created a number of sculptures: a bust of the poet Josef Kalus; a plaque commemorating the 1831 Radhost celebration; and many nativity illustrations. One of his Wallachian Nativity illustrations is on exhibit in Montgomery, Alabama, in the USA, and another is displayed during the Christmas season in the Church of St. Martin in Frenštát. In addition to his sculptures, he sketched hundred of scenes depicting Wallachian traditions. Like many of the artists of his time, his illustrations were published on calendars and in other publications. Today, his statues can be found in various towns throughout the Czech Republic. Because the works of Jan Knebl are little known to persons of Czech descent living in Texas, it is hoped that this exhibit will familiarize Texas Czechs with Jan Knebl and his artistry. —SPJST— CHMGC Executive Director Sandi Wicker, far left, is pictured with, left to right, John and Bennie Stasny and Nancy and Darwin Machu. They are displaying a special exhibition of the works of renowned Czech painter/sculptor Jan Knebl featuring four original “artist” sketches to be displayed in the new Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. John and Nancy are members of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor, and Darwin is a member of Lodge 20, Granger.
