Total SPJST weekend

The weekend of June 13 and 14

was a total SPJST weekend! It began Friday evening with a call from an excited Lodge 142, Houston President Keith Kieschnick. He proudly shared that the lodge would be discussing at its monthly meeting on Sunday, the 14th, a donation of $80,000 to SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm for the purchase of a cabin (which includes naming rights). On Saturday, David and I traveled to Cooper Farm to spend some of the day and all of the evening/night with this year’s Leaders-In-Training. What a great group of teenagers who will be assisting at this summer’s district camps! They are the first group of SPJST youth to stay at Cooper Farm. The retreat included many activities throughout the afternoon, evening, and night. Supreme Lodge President Brian filmed the different activities. We took his footage and created a video that the LITs viewed on Sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. Between going through the footage, we enjoyed visiting with the LITs and chaperones and took in a few of the activities. I had my first s’more since I became editor (my last one was five years ago as SYD)! And, boy, was it delicious! Nothing beats a s’more roasted over a campfire by 2007-2008 State King Colby Havemann at 2:30 a.m. surrounded by SPJST’s teen leaders and dedicated chaperones. Then, it was time for a hike around Cooper Farm. But, David and I hiked back to the ENC office—well, really, Mr. Ronnie drove us on the golf cart—to finish the video. We added the rest of Brian’s video footage and music, produced the final copy, and burned the

DVD for SYD John to play. We then decided to head home around 5:30 a.m. It was an awesome experience that made me realize how much I miss SPJST summer camp!

SPJST Honors Old Glory SPJST celebrated Flag Day in a big way on Sunday, June 14 with a ceremony honoring the Stars and Stripes at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. The program included a flag raising, patriotic music, proclamation, presentations, and 10-year-old Melinda McClellan of Lodge 84, Dallas reading her winning 2009 Flag Day Essay Contest entry. See next week’s Vestnik for photos from the event.

$80,000 Donation to ENC The weekend ended on a high note as Lodge 142, Houston did approve the donation of a cabin to the ENC. Wow! Way to go, Lodge 142! Details coming soon.

Doni Raises $1,500 for MDA Hats off to SPJST Home Office Underwriter Doni Powell who raised $1,500 for MDA and Jerry’s Kids. Doni volunteered to be “locked up” at the local MDA’s jail-a-thon. Doni also serves as president of Lodge 80, Holland. Early July 8 Vestnik Deadline —Tuesday, June 30 Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the Vestnik will observe an early deadline for the July 8 Vestnik issue. All information for the July 8 Vestnik must be submitted no later than Tuesday, June 30 at 5 p.m. Please make a note of this deadline and submit your items early. Thanks. —SPJST—

Scenes from Lodge 88, Houston’s Homecoming

Sunday, June 7, 2009 • Lodge 88, Houston • Submitted by JoAnn Buri, Second Vice President

This year’s Homecoming at Lodge 88, Houston on Sunday, June 7 turned out to be a huge success. We had a very good crowd, and everyone enjoyed the day. There were so many renewed acquaintances with such a good member turnout. The orchestra lived up to their reputation by playing so many good Czech songs. The Choral Group complimented the music with their outstanding performances. All in all, the program was great. Outside, the youth activities were

underway with the water slide and snow cones. As you see from the pictures, everyone had a great time. The kitchen committee did an outstanding job in serving a delicious barbecue chicken and sausage lunch. The Birthday Club Sisters sold their delicious pastry; the bar had a very busy day; the prize drawing went well; and last, but not least, the dance was very well attended. All committees and workers did an outstanding job of pulling it all together and making the day successful.

Czech Day—October 25 Speaking of celebrations, let’s not forget the 44th Annual Czech Day being held on Sunday, October 25 which is fast approaching. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The youth club will sell their delicious homemade ice cream, and the Birthday Club Sisters will sell their famous pastry. The SPJST Orchestra and Choral Group will present their program of the good ole Czech songs for your enjoyment from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This year, we’re working hard to have interesting handicraft booths from area merchants as well as educational information for Czech descendants. Anyone interested in having a booth, please contact Ashley Victorick or the Lodge 88 office (713) 869-5767 for details. Fraternally, Jo Ann Buri Second Vice President —SPJST—

It was suggested that everyone wear something red, white, or blue in honor of Independence Day. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our only June birthday celebrant—Ruby Grauer. May you have many more birthdays. Door prizes were brought by Lil Kosarek (three), Rita Thomas, Lucille Kret, and Libbie Vrla. Lucky winners were Shirley Martin, Debbie Skrasek, Rita Thomas, Lydia Alholm, Anna Johnson, and Paula Arsenault. June hostesses Lil Kosarek, Rita Thomas, and Libbie Vrla were thanked. After the meeting, grace was said, and a great luncheon was enjoyed. Following, games were played and a good time was had by all.

family just moved back from up north in time to help take care of him. Emil, our prayers go out to you, too. Lydia reported on having a great time on her trip to Memphis. She enjoyed all the sights, and yes, she was a winner at the casinos. She was even a winner at Friendship Club this time after a long dry spell. I guess her luck is turning around. Congratulations go out to Rose Ann and Jimmy Spann’s grandson Casey James Spann of Chico High School. He was a recent winner of the Bob Tallman Scholarship Award. Bob is a longtime announcer for the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo, and which award honors a student who would probably never win a buckle, but who is a young person who has a lot of heart and never gives up. When Casey was a small boy, he was stricken with cerebral palsy and still suffers today. He stretches at least twice a day to prevent his muscles from becoming too tight. As a roper, he worked hard to become proficient at dismounting and tying a calf. The difficult thing is doing it right and doing it fast at the same time. Casey missed qualifying for the championship by one slot, but this was his first year at roping, and he did great. He will receive a $1,000 scholarship for each year at Tarleton State. Birthday wishes go out to Rose Ann’s granddaughter Natalie Paige who recently celebrated her first birthday. Congratulations go out to Jenny Harshbarger of Bethalto, Illinois, who graduated from Maryville University in St. Louis with a degree in physical therapy. Jenny is the granddaughter of cousin Millie Vrla Breden. Willie Mae Becan enjoyed the visit from her son Jerry. They made the annual visit to St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Penelope and St. Mary’s Cemetery in West. They also enjoyed the visit with her sisters Georgie Macek and Mary Jaska at West Haven Nursing Home. Congratulations go out to her granddaughter Veronica Miller who graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, and grandson Tracy Miller who graduated from TCU in Fort Worth. Several years ago, John Kebrle, stained glass artist from Dallas, told me he created a glass tree for Texas A&M; and that if I ever visited A&M to look it up. John further told me that they had to find a route from Dallas to College Station so that they would not have to go under an underpass in transporting it there on a flatbed truck. For the past two years, I have had two nephews Travis Kosarek of Arlington

At Easter, I asked again, and Chris pulled out his Blackberry. He asked for the spelling of John’s last name, pulled up a picture of this tree, and showed it to me. The other weekend, on the way to the Texas Czech Genealogy Society Conference in Caldwell, sister Lil and I spent the night in Waco. When we got there, Chris had an envelope on the table for me. In it was a photo of him standing in front of this glass tree at A&M. He had found the tree and had his mother take a photo of him by this tree on Parent’s Day just for me. Naturally, I thought this was most special. I was pleased to finally see what the tree looks like. I understand it is two levels high and most impressive. Krouzek Ceskych Zen—Dallas Circle of Czech Women

President Deanna Houpy called the meeting to order. Evelyn Trojacek led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased fathers and for our beloved Sister Esther Cunningham. She will be missed. Deanna said that Esther would have liked for us to continue as before. Deanna said we have lost our first mate Esther who would have assisted her and arranged for the programs and fund-raiser for the “Cruise on the Voyager Krouzek.” We also have lost our treasurer Joyce who was responsible for the finances of the ship and paying bills. She said she needed all the members to work together to save the good ship Voyager Krouzek.

Recording Secretary Carole Faraizl read the minutes of May meeting, and they were approved as read. Deanna gave the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Correspondence Secretary Evelyn Trojacek read the correspondence including a letter from President Deanna Houpy to Joyce Ehrenberger thanking her for being treasurer. Evelyn collected donations in memory of Esther Cunningham from Bertha and Julius Pohradsky, Lydia Alholm, Deanna Houpy, Evelyn Trojacek, Bessie Tydlaska, and Bessie Petr. Evelyn asked Esther’s daughter Dr. Kathleen Smalky where she would like for the donation in memory of Esther to go, and she said to leave it in the treasury. Evelyn wrote a thank you for the donation to Dr. Kathleen Smalky. Membership Secretary Carole Faraizl said we have 66 paid members. Sunshine Chairman Joyce Moore sent a sympathy card to Evelyn Cechan on the loss of her sister Hazel Schmitter; Robert Cunningham and Dr. Kathleen Smalky - for the loss of

her mother Esther; and to Bob for the loss of his wife Esther. Old business included reinstalling the nominating committee to fill financial and program chairman and the treasurer’s position. The committee consisted of Bessie Tydlaska, Joyce Moore, and Ruth Chmelar. Under new business, we discussed the no-bake bake sale for the November meeting. Esther suggested the nobake bake sale. Get your favorite recipe; find out the cost of ingredients needed to bake it; and donate the cost to the Krouzek. We discussed whether we would like to have a group picture made at Christmas. A motion was made, and it was agreed that we would like to have one made. Evelyn Trojacek said her son-in-law takes pictures. She would check with him. Our Christmas party was discussed. We are going to request Friday, December 4 to reserve the upstairs at Sokol Dallas. Bessie Petr will cater the luncheon. We voted to have chicken breast, rice, green beans, salad, rolls, tea, and mandarin orange

cake. We will have a silent auction of baked items and Christmas decorations. We also discussed the menu of the hot dog picnic in August. It was discussed, and Evelyn Cechan said it would be easier for one person to buy the hot dogs, buns, and ice cream and everyone pay rather than try to find out who would bring what. A motion was made, and we agreed that Evelyn Cechan would buy the hot dogs, buns, chips, and ice cream cups and everyone pay. Deanna volunteered that she would bring the grated cheese and pickle relish, Bessie Tydlaska would bring the mustard, and Bessie Petr will furnish the chili. No one will have to bring anything but cash. Bertha Podhrasky said Sokol Dallas was hosting the mayor of Brno and dignitaries from Czech Republic who are here to attend the International Sport and Culture Festival and Sokol Slet in Fort Worth. The dinner will be July 2. The social hour will be at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and meet them and socialize with them. Our program was discussion by

She is also going to visit Czech Republic to see family and to visit. Evelyn Trojacek read a travelers prayer. A motion was made that we adjourn. We adjourned with our favorite quotation: “Mejte se vzdycky radi”— Always love one another. The do vyhry were drawn and handed out. The blessing before lunch was handed out by Carolyn Nemec, and we read the blessing together. Hostesses for June were Evelyn Trojacek and Evelyn Cechan. Hostesses for August are Bertha Podhrasky and Kelly Tucker. We enjoyed a covered dish lunch-

Parking Lot Penny By d.knape Lodge 187, Round Rock When I walked across the parking lot, there it was, an old penny looking as if Lincoln had grown old with his brown beard turning gray, and it had been rolled over so many times it looked as if it was part of the asphalt, but I stopped anyway, looked around, should I pick it up? Who's looking? Should I stoop and risk ridicule? Am I so cheap as to pick up this worn penny? Well, YES! And so I reached down and picked it up, then started to whistle a tune, act like I didn't do it. My wife would be embarrassed if she saw me do this, and so I quickly walked away and looked at the cars close by to make sure no one saw me but even if they did, what would I do, put it back? And now I have a new old penny, that is not worth anything, you can't buy anything with it but isn't it supposed to be bring you luck and I feel good and feel like I honor my father who saved every penny he ever made or found and would be proud of me now that I followed in his footsteps. I am my father's son and much of him has rubbed off on me, and like him, I hate wasting anything and so I hate to pass a penny on a parking lot, especially one that is weathered and gray like me. —SPJST—

The Zalesak Sisters — Pauline Zalesak Morbitzer, Wilma Zalesak Perry, and Betty Zalesak Loyd— sing a parody of “My Favorite Things” from the legendary movie “The Sound of Music.”

Now, it wouldn’t be funny if it weren’t so true: To commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, 2004, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP. One of the musical numbers she performed was “My Favorite Things” from the legendary movie “Sound Of Music.” However, the lyrics of the song were deliberately changed for the entertainment of her “blue hair” audience. The parady lyrics, which were also performed by the Zalesak sisters at the Fort Worth Ladies Circle meeting, are:

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These are a few of my favorite things. Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with

swings, These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don’t feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin’, Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’, And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things. When the joints ache, when the hips break, When the eyes grow dim, Then I remember the great life I’ve had, And then I don’t feel so bad. —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth enjoys LIT weekend

Dear Readers, This past weekend, I attended Leader-In-Training (LIT) retreat at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm, near Fayetteville, Texas. This was the first group of LITs that got to stay overnight at SPJST’s official camp site, and because cabins have not yet been built on the property, we had a lock-in in the main hall. We started the day with first aid training followed by a tour of the new camp. After dinner, we split up into groups for horseshoes, teamwork exercises, and a wildlife presentation. The groups joined back together for a dance. Then, we went outside for s’mores and a night hike. By then, it was getting pretty late, so while everyone relaxed on air mattresses, we watched “Pirates of the Caribbean.” In the morning, we had LIT awards, a vesper service, and watched a video compiled of scenes from the previous day. I really enjoyed seeing people for the first time since last summer, making new friends, and learning how to be a great LIT. Thanks to State Youth Director John Hoelscher and all his helpers for making it a fun and informative camp! Fraternally, Sam Vanicek —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas youth: LIT fun, ready for next year

Dear Readers, Last weekend, I joined several other youth for the Leader-InTraining retreat. Although I had to get up early to join others from Lodge 84, Dallas for the ride, it was fun since we met up with others and made a short caravan there. We were there only overnight, but it was a packed 24 hours or so of events and activities to take with us to district camp and assist with the younger members. I especially enjoyed the wildlife animals that were brought for us to admire. It was also nice to see our Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny. She didn’t think I saw her, but I did! Anyway, I really had fun and next year, my sister is going to be joining me so she can have the same experience as I did. Fraternally, Scott Cowan —SPJST—

“Peter Rabbit” author was an artist and conservationist

Beatrix Potter was born back on July 28, 1866, but she has never been forgotten. The writer and illustrator of the “Peter Rabbit” books not only has many of her works in print but was portrayed by Renee Zellweger in the 2006 film Miss Potter. And, she is the star of a gentle set of mysteries by Susan Wittig Albert. Featuring Potter and a warm set of animal characters, the mysteries are set at Potter’s famous Hill Top Farm. Beatrix was brought up mostly by governesses and servants. Her friends were the mice, rabbits, frogs and hedgehog. Early on, she discovered a talent for drawing and often sketched her beloved plants and animals. Peter Rabbit originated in a letter written to the sick son of a former gov-

19

erness. Several publishers declined her work, so Beatrix published her book privately. Later, Frederick Warne and Co. expressed interest, and “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” with its exquisite watercolors, was published in 1902 followed by tales containing Benjamin Bunny and the hedgehog, Mrs. TiggyWinkle, Squirrel Nutkin and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Beatrix insisted that her books be kept small to fit comfortably into a child’s hands and have only a few words on each page. She purchased farmland in her favorite English Lake District, a locale for many of her stories, and named it Hill Top Farm. After she married William Heelis in 1913, she devoted her years to breeding sheep and fighting for land conservation. Much of her land, including Hill Top Farm, was given to the National Trust to preserve the way of life she so believed in. —SPJST—

Mystery softball photo identified

Recently, we found a photo of an SPJST softball team in some old files in the Czech Heritage Museum, and it brought up many questions. We shared the photo with the Vestnik. Thanks to those who called with information about the photo. We learned that the photo is of an SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Softball Team. Thanks to Ben Jarma of Lodge 84 who shared information about the team. Sandi Wicker CHMGC Executive Director SPJST Lodge 84 Softball Team

The picture of men’s softball team appearing in the April 8 Vestnik was organized in Dallas at Lodge 84 in 1954. Ben David and Ben Jarma both had the same idea, so we decided to be

co-managers and start the team and to get the young people interested in the lodge. After one year, Ben (David) was transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I remained the manager, coach, and business manager for 34 years. Of course, I had lots of help from many of the players, and we all kept the team going. We won many league trophies that are displayed in our trophy case at the lodge hall and were even Dallas City Champs in 1975. All our players were SPJST members. We had team sponsors—16 each—who contributed to the team’s advertisement on the uniforms. We had one sponsor who furnished steaks for the team’s annual banquet, 28 seasons and another team sponsor who furnished crow (chicken) for the other seasons we didn’t win a trophy. We were a family of SPJST members; many of our members attended our ball games. After the games, we met for refreshments out at Divas. We

held a lodge dance once a year and raffles to raise funds for the team. We all got together nearly every season and had team fishing trips at Lake Texoma, Lake Towakoni, and Lake Whitney which were always enjoyed by

which was rewarding. Since 1988, we have had several team reunions and many ex-team members attended which also included the wives. Our last reunion was on Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Don Jarma Ranch near Prosper, Texas. Good food, refreshments, and horseshoe games were enjoyed by all. In closing, my thanks to all the players on our teams, to their wives and children, to our team sponsors, as well as the support of our lodge membership. Changing tastes in Czech gardens

At this time of year, Czech gardens are a hive of activity. Driving through any Czech town, you’ll spot at least a couple of barbecues smoldering away, and a handful of odd types digging and sweating in the midday sun. Certain garden chores - the weeding, the watering, the pruning - remain the same, year-in year-out, but are Czechs using their gardens in a different way now than say, 10 years ago? For a start, it seems that more Czechs than ever are hiring someone else to do the job for them. For landscaper Aleš Korčak, business is booming. I met him in a satellite town just outside Prague, on what seemed to be a flattened patch of dirt: “I employ about 10 people, and my firm has been going for about 10 years. Our specialty is small gardens like this one we are in right now – small gardens around family houses. But sometimes we do larger jobs, too, like, for example, we recently designed the park around a castle.”

Aleš demonstrates his digger-handling skills. In the last 10 years, his firm has grown, both in terms of the number of people employed, and the equipment it can call its own. But what about his customers’ tastes? Have they changed in the time Aleš has been in the business? “The basics are the same. A garden is a garden. But the difference is in the kind of architecture that people want in their gardens. For example, now in modern gardens, you are using more plants, like herbs, and not only bushes.” According to Aleš Korčak, Czech gardens used to play much more functional a role. His view is supported by all the old cherry trees, plum trees, and tomato plants still found in villages all over the country. But, our landscaper says, Czechs are moving away from function, and towards form, with design playing an increasingly large role in people’s backyards: “Now, we very often use materials like stone, we make some stone walls in the garden, terraces, too, and we combine stone with materials like wood. Very often, my customers want some sort of water feature - some water with fish and with plants, so quite natural looking.” And where do you think people are getting these ideas from? “I don’t know, maybe from the television, but I think they just see it in their neighbor’s garden. There are some exhibitions about gardening, too, but I think that a lot of people get their ideas in foreign countries. For example, at the moment, it is very modern to have a Mediterranean-styled garden, it is really modern. This means using plants embedded in lots of stones, etc.” The theme tune for ‘Zahrada je hra’ – a massively popular Czech television programme which gives people tips on how to revamp their gardens. In this particular episode, the host Jiří Sedláček suggests ways of bringing your summer holidays, and the interesting ideas you have seen

abroad, back onto your own patch of Czech soil. According to the gardeners’ association in this country, more and more Czech landscapers are themselves considering going abroad, and not coming back. Has Aleš Korčak ever thought of moving elsewhere in the European Union in a bid to earn more money? “I have thought about it, but in the end I said ‘no’, because I wanted to try my luck here. For me, it is important to be here because I have a lot of friends here and I like this country. Maybe sometimes I go abroad, but even then, when I do, it isn’t really in Europe, it is in Asia or Central America.” But what about elsewhere? Pavel Mika has been maintaining one of Prague’s biggest public gardens – Petřín – for the last 30 years. I took a ride up the park’s unusual funicular railway to meet him and ask whether he was having trouble at the top: “I think that we are really lacking the sort of ‘middle-management’ here right now. People who know the trade, who can lead groups of gardeners as well as doing the work themselves. I am always seeing adverts in the papers, asking for people with such expertise. I never see adverts for top managers, I think there are quite enough of them. But for these skilled employees and part-timers who know both how to use a computer and plant a tree – I think there is more demand than supply.” Czechs tastes in their own gardens may be changing, but what about in their parks? Has Petřín changed in all of the years that Mr. Mika has been in charge? “It has changed, of course it doesn’t look all that different. But the weather has changed a bit, the people have changed a bit, the conditions are a little bit different. So it has changed a bit, but really it is still an everyday struggle to keep things in order here.” Mr. Mika points out that being a gardener in a public park is very different a job from being a landscape gardener. But what is it that his job consists of? “If we start with winter, then our job then is mainly to clear the snow from all the paths. But apart from that, there isn’t much to do, so it is a quieter time for us. And then spring comes, all at once, and we have to come out of hibernation, because the grass starts growing, and with that

comes weeds, and pests start to attack the roses. Then in summer, it is about mowing the lawn, tending to the roses and the other plants, and finally in autumn, our main job is raking up the leaves, and clearing them.” It seems that Pavel Mika and Aleš Korčak both have their fair share of repetitive, back-breaking, and seemingly thankless tasks to do. Doesn’t it all get a bit frustrating?

“My wife sometimes tells me how difficult housework is, and how she gets no recognition for it, and I say to her ‘tell me about it!’ It’s just the same here. This work is repetitive, you clean up and the next day, the mess is back. This work never comes to an end, no one cuts a ribbon, no one holds a party. It really bothers me when you do something, and someone comes along and vandalizes it – this is Prague, a relatively big city, where things like that happen from time to time. But it really makes me happy when the roses come into bloom and Japanese tourists, who are used to really impressive public gardens, come along and photograph them.” So it seems that some things are the same everywhere, but within Czechs’ gardens - both public and private - the changing of the seasons brings with it new trends, new foreign influences, new decking . . . you name it.
