Fill your bucket with kindness

When you are kind to someone

or give them a compliment, it lifts your mood. Authors Tom Rath and Donald Clifton, say you are “filling your bucket” of positive experiences. In their book “How Full Is Your Bucket,” they say every interaction you have adds to or subtracts from your bucket. Happiness depends on how full of positive, affirming experiences your bucket is at any given time. Bucket-filling is contagious, the authors say. Your kindness sparks a chain reaction. It makes people you have been kind to want to be kind to others. To keep your bucket full, they recommend five positive encounters to every negative one. You can reach that goal by commenting to people about what they do right. Support your friends. Give sincere smiles. When someone compliments you, pass it on and let the feeling spread.

An American Woman and a Czech Man An American woman was touring Yellowstone National Park with a gentleman friend from Czech Republic when suddenly an angry bear approached. The bear pounced on the man and ate him up. The woman ran away as fast as she could and soon found a park ranger. The two started out together to look for the bear. From a short distance, they saw two bears standing where the incident had occurred. The ranger asked which bear did it, and she said it was the male. The ranger took aim and shot the female. They cut the bear open and found the man in its stomach. The woman asked why he shot the female, and the ranger said, “I never trust anyone who says the Czech is in the male!” Lodge 15 Celebrates SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts will celebrate its 100th anniversary this Sunday, July 19 with a celebration at the lodge hall. The Fine Art of Fraternalism Part 1

International Sport and Cultural Festival (22nd American Sokol Slet) • June 23 to 28, 2009 • Fort Worth, Texas

en, women, boys, and girls attending the 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival were invited to participate in “The Fine Art of Fraternalism” project. As with any collaborative effort, The Fine Art of Fraternalism provided festival attendees with the opportunity to gather, interact, and build relationships. By week’s end, participants created two works of art that reflected their collective imagination and creativity. It was all to make a point: “There are many wonderful things in life that will never be done if you don’t do them. Working together, we can make a positive difference!” Project participants were encouraged to sign the registry so they can be acknowledged as contributing artists. The paintings are displayed in the SPJST Home Office gallery in Temple, Texas.

A bo ut SPJS T Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are founded upon the principle that every individual is his “brother’s keeper,” and that each of us has a responsibility to help each other. Fraternalism remains a time-honored concept. This spirit of “doing good for each other” was expressed in the loosely organized and semi-religious societies of ancient Greece which provided financial aid to their members in time of sickness and death. In addition to providing financial support to the families of departed members, these early fraternal societies recognized the social need of human beings for companionship. As such, these early societies and guilds provided a way for people to meet at friendly gatherings. The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu

Texas) was founded in this spirit by Czech pioneers in Texas in 1897. It was founded in the Czech language because its founders knew that language best. The Society continues to emphasize the importance of Czech heritage and culture. SPJST’s mottoes are Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood. Further, SPJST seeks to instill patriotism into the hearts of its members. Throughout its existence, SPJST has fulfilled its financial obligations to its members and kept pace with the life insurance industry and today offers its members an extensive menu of life insurance options, including annuities and mortgage loans. For 112 years, SPJST lodges and members have worked hard to establish the Society’s reputation as a proactive, nonsectarian fraternal organization. Local lodges sponsor a wide range of family-oriented activities, including community service projects, recreational events, dances, picnics, choral and dance groups. The SPJST’s youth program provides boys and girls with a wealth of opportunities to achieve personal growth, fun, and scholarships. In 2009, there are more than 50,000 SPJST members in 114 lodges throughout Texas. They are taking the best that SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families — and are extending these values to their communities. SPJST’s fraternal venue encompasses a broad range of adult- and youth-oriented activities and opportunities for community service. Numerous SPJST projects and members have been recognized statewide by the Texas Fraternal Congress and nationwide by the National Fraternal Congress of America. —SPJST—

Prepare for eagle landing

Burleson-area resident Betty Shelton along with a host of other community volunteers and veterans are still awaiting the arrival of the city’s first life-size, commemorative eagle. As coordinator for the Eagle Project, Shelton was among those who turned out for an SPJST check donation Tuesday (June 23) at Renfro Square. SPJST members donated $1,400 to help fund the cost of the commemorative statue which will honor area veterans. The total cost of the eagle is $15,000, and Shelton is still raising funds to finish the project. “This means we are at the end and we only lack a few more dollars,” Shelton said. “The eagle is secured but whatever we have left over, they are going to build a monument up front, and we hope to have enough to get bricks for people. SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek supports the event because the organization focuses primarily on patriotic projects across the state. “The main reason we are here is our lodge is involved in the project, and you can’t get any more patriotic than this,” Vanicek said. “This project recognizes the contributions our veterans have made over the years, and we’re proud to be here today. “I think the statue is going to be awesome and looking at the 12 feet prototype, and I can just imagine the real statue will be really inspiring,” he added. Local SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson President Bill Slavik also believes it preserves American freedoms. “It’s real important to have this type of symbol in our community for those people who have served in the military,” Slavik said. “We all have family who have dedicated their time and efforts to the military. This project is the type of project we try to work with because it’s something that will have a community result.” Slavik’s wife, Carole, is also a strong veteran supporter

and once the Eagle Project is complete, the patriotic couple plan to continue supporting other similar projects. “We’ve always been very proud of our veterans and we want to be a part of helping Burleson show support for the veterans,” Carole said. “I have lived in the community for 38 years, and projects like this one are wonderful because it shows our growth. At first, many of us weren’t real favorable toward the expansion, but you can’t stop growth.” Military Order of the Purple Heart representative Paul DeVault was please when he learned about the commemorative eagle and praised Shelton. “I think this is a very good project, and Betty has done a lot for the veterans in this community,” Devault said. “I was in the Army from 1945 to 1971, and I’m here today to show my support for my fellow veterans.” Other supporters include Burleson-area resident Loren Story who was equally excited about the positive impact the Eagle Project will have on the community. “I served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and I think it’s a great honor for all the veterans,” Story said. “There is no comparison between the reception that veterans receive today compared to what we received back then. We were treated badly back then, but the troops are today getting a lot more support than what they did when I first came back.” The statue will stand at seven feet perched on a 3.5 foot stone with a 12-foot wingspan. The stone will be adorned with plaques representing all military branches. Shelton hopes to raise the additional funds needed and have the eagle installed at Renfro Square within the coming weeks.

LEFT PHOTO: Members of SPJST presented a check for $1,450 to community volunteer Betty Shelton during a patriotic gathering at Renfro Square in Burleson June 23. The funds will be used to purchase a life-size bronze eagle which will stand at city hall in honor of local veterans. Community representatives and veterans are pictured with SL President Vanicek, Director Krizan, Carole and Bill Slavik, and Lodge 180 Secretary Rhonda Hurtik, front, center. Not pictured but also attending the ceremony were the mayor of Burleson and City of Burleson representatives. “Lodge 180 is very proud of SPJST’s generosity in making this sizeable contribution for the veteran’s memorial statue,” Treasurer Carole Slavik says. “Director Krizan’s interest in our lodge and communicating that message to SL President Vanicek made this contribution a reality.”

District One camp July 17 - 19 SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm

Attention, Youth of District One! I am so excited to be having District One camp at the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm in Ledbetter. I have 110 campers registered to attend this year which should prove to be nothing less than a challenge. Our camping session will be shorter this year due to the lack of cabin facilities at Cooper Farm. Our camp dates are Friday, July 17 at 3 p.m. to Sunday, July 19 at 9 a.m. We will all be sleeping in the air

conditioned dining hall. There will be a limited number of air mattresses, so bring your own (with a pump) if you would like. Sleeping bags are also recommended instead of separate sheets, blankets, etc. Do not bring personal fans due to safety hazard of electrical cords. Because there are no cabins, there are also limited numbers of showers available. We might just put you in your swimsuit, give you a handful of liquid soap, and hose you off with a water hose. Our water activities this year will be at Fayette Lake so bring a life jacket if you have one. There is also a water trampoline at the pond at Cooper Farm that will require a life jacket. We will be fishing, shooting

BB guns, hiking, playing horseshoes and washers, and doing archery at the ENC facility. All of this in one day — sounds exciting! Our night activities will include a dance, movies, horseshoe tournament, and indoor rodeo. Attention, Parents! I am extending an invitation for you to come to camp on Saturday, July 18 to participate in the day’s activities. Please let me know if you plan to attend so that adequate food can be prepared. The best way to reach me is by e-mail (spjst@aol.com). We will be doing the Adopt-aHighway and Adopt-a-County Road project on Friday afternoon. Please dress comfortably and bring closed-toe shoes for all activities (ex-

The Fine Art of Fraternalism

Men, women, boys and girls attending the 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival June 17 - 20 in Fort Worth, Texas participated in “The Fine Art of Fraternalism” project. As with any fraternal activity, the project provided Festival attendees with the opportunity to have a little fun and in the process get to know each other better. By week’s end, participants created two works of art that reflected their creativity and spirit. SPJST organized the project to make a point: “There are many wonderful things in life that will never be done if you don’t do them. Working together, we can make a positive difference!” The SPJST is a fraternal organization founded on the idea of doing good for each other and for the communities that we seek to serve. Our youth mission is to provide a well-rounded educational, patriotic and social program. We also like to have fun!

Finishing Touch! A gymnast from Venezuela adds her touch to “The Fine Art of Fraternalism” project sponsored by SPJST at the 2009 International Sport and Cultural Festival. Hundreds of men, women, boys and girls made their mark on the two large canvases which are now on display at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas.

The SPJST Youth Program reflects “The Fine Art of Fraternalism” in many ways. Through active participation in local SPJST Youth Clubs and Statewide events, members between the ages of five and 18 acquire team-building skills, establish lifelong friendships and develop a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. Many local youth clubs also work with local school, church, civic groups or their mother lodge on programs that address local needs. SPJST summer camps, now in full swing, foster a sprit of cooperation, form an appreciation of the natural environment and help campers achieve their leadership potential. Summer is also the time of year for SPJST Youth Achievement Days (YAD). SPJST sponsors YAD competitions at the District and State levels as an educational activity for SPJST youth club members, enabling contestants to field entries in a range of areas including arts and crafts, music, dance, drama and public speaking. The SPJST also strongly encourages its outstanding young members to continue their educational development. Since it began in 1983, the SPJST Scholarship Program has awarded more than $1 million to deserving college-bound youth. Working together, men, women, boys and girls are making a positive difference through the SPJST Youth Program. SPJST Youth Leaders and District Youth Counselors provide the supervision and direction necessary to keep our youth members on track and involved. Adult leaders, SPJST personnel and Leaders-in-Training assist them in their efforts. After reading about “The Fine Art of Fra ternalism, answer the three questions below: 1. Working together, we can make a ______________ ______________. 2. The SPJST’s youth mission is to provide a well-rounded ________________, ________________, and ________________ program. 3. Since it began in 1983, the SPJST Scholarship Program has awarded more than ________________________ to deserving college-bound youth.

Dear Věstník Readers, I have had a busy summer. I just got back from Karolyi’s Gymnastic Camp. My coaches were from Hungary, and they were awesome! I am also attending Trevino’s Gymnastics School four to five times a week. I train five hours a day. I did very well at District Three YAD this year. I am going to State YAD with my wildflower project that

I completed for my sixth grade science class. I was also excited about the accomplishments of the sixth grade band. On May 1, the Ennis sixth grade band traveled to Sandy Lake Park and won two awards! We won the first division award and the outstanding band of the day. We were so excited! In my spare time, I helped with Vacation Bible School and babysat my baby brother. Summer is going fast so I guess I will see everyone at State YAD! Fraternally, Amanda Jurik —SPJST—

July 6 — Jan Hus Day

by Dr. Robert L. Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood

July 6 is Jan Hus Day. This day marks the anniversary of the execution of Jan Hus, a Czech Catholic priest, theologian, reformer, and rector at Charles University in Prague who inspired the “Hussite” movement. Jan Hus Day is one of the public holidays in the Czech Republic, whose citizens regard him as a national hero despite the fact that Roman Catholics and free thinkers currently outnumber Hussites in this important European nation. Jan Hus was born in Husinec in southern Bohemia sometime between 1369 to 1373. Greatly influenced by

English reformer John Wycliffe, he was concerned with bringing the church back to its spiritual roots and providing the scriptures in the language of the people, instead of the church Latin version which only the educated and clergy had the opportunity to learn. He also desired the church to surrender much of the secular power and material possessions it had accumulated so that its spiritual mission could proceed unhindered. Such suggested reforms—which he preached at Bethlehem Chapel in Prague—met with tremendous opposition from church authorities, although they were popular with the masses. In 1410, Hus was excommunicated. On July 6, 1415, he was condemned by a church council meeting at the Cathedral at Constance. The Bishop of Lodi delivered an oration on the duty of eradicating heresy; then some theses of Hus and Wycliffe and a report of his trial were read. An Italian prelate pronounced the sentence of condemnation. Hus fell upon his knees and asked God with a low voice to forgive all his enemies. With

curses, his ornaments were taken from him, his priestly tonsure was destroyed, and the sentence was pronounced that the Church had deprived him of all rights and delivered him to the secular powers. At the place of execution he knelt down, spread out his hands, and prayed aloud: “God is my witness that I have never taught that of which I have by false witnesses been accused. In the truth of the Gospel which I have written, taught, and preached, I will die today with gladness.” He was then burnt at the stake. Amongst Hus’ last words are allegedly that, “in a hundred years, God will raise up a man whose calls for reform cannot be suppressed.” Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses a church door in Wittenberg 102 years later. At that time, many considered Wycliffe the beginning, Hus the middle, and Luther the end of the Reformation. After Hus’ death, his followers split into a number of factions, including Utraqusts, Taborites, and Orphans. In 1430, Joan of Arc threatened to lead a crusading army against the Hussites unless they returned to the Catholic Church. Her subsequent capture, trial, and execution prevented this. In 1999, Pope John Paul II expressed “deep regret for the cruel death inflicted” on Hus and suggested an inquiry as to whether he might be cleared of heresy. Today, Hus is listed as a martyr in the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Jan Hus monument stands in the center of Old Town Square in Prague. It was sculpted by Ladislav Saloun and unveiled on July 6, 1915—the 500th anniversary of Hus’ death. The Jan Hus Presbyterian Church and the Jan Hus Playhouse are located at 351 East 74th Street in Manhattan. There is a commemorative state at Union Cemetery in Bohemia, Long Island erected by Czech immigrants to the New York area in 1893. Olšany Cemetery Olšanské hřbitovy

The Olsany Cemetery was created in 1680 to accommodate plague victims who died en mass in Prague in 1680 and needed to be buried quickly. In 1787, when the plague again struck the city, Emperor Joseph II banned the burial of bodies within Prague city limits and Olsany Cemetery was declared the central graveyard for hygiene purposes. The graveyard is divided into sections. In the Jewish Cemetery section is the grave of writer Franz Kafka. In the Christian Cemetery is the grave of Jan Palach, who set himself on fire and burned himself to death in 1968 to protest the Soviet invasion. His body was taken from Olsany Cemetery in 1973 to prevent his grave from becoming the site of organized protests. His coffin was returned in 1990. Volunteers work on history trail through Pragueʼs largest cemetery

Prague’s Olsanske cemetery - Olsanské hřbitovy - is by far the largest graveyard in the city. It is the final resting place of over a million people, including many of the leading figures of the Czech national revival and scholars and artists. You can also find there the graves of Czech legionaries from the First World War as well as Commonwealth and Russian soldiers who lost their lives on Czechoslovak territory during the Second World War. However, this burial ground is often the target of vandals and some of old-

est parts of Olsanske cemetery are in very bad repair. But thanks to the efforts of a handful of volunteers, the old cemetery is slowly becoming an attractive place for visitors who can learn more about the stories behind the gravestones. Surrounded by busy thoroughfares from all sides, the Olsanske cemetery is never a quiet place although on a weekday morning like today, it is nearly deserted. The older parts, close to the metro station Flora, are sometimes a painful sight. Among the greenery, sandstone tombs, a couple of centuries old, are nearly falling apart, their roofs caved in. Some of them have their doorways bricked up to stop unwanted guests from using them as toilets or places to sleep. But in the oldest part of the cemetery, the view is a little more optimistic. The eye is attracted by small white tablets scattered among the graves with photos and texts paying tribute to some of the long departed. That's the work of Roman Catholic priest Milos Szabo and his parishioners from the nearby district of Zizkov. “I started discovering the history of the place, partly because I perform funerals there. I can see how quickly the gravestones get damaged, bits of them stolen and so on. I could not look at it anymore. I first inquired with the au-

the third sector of the cemetery.” On an area of 50 hectares, the Olsanske cemetery has been described as an open air museum and gallery. Yet, it is difficult to navigate, and often you come across the important graves by chance. That is now changing, thanks to Father Szabo and his parishioners. The poor state of the gravestones and tombs is another matter. thorities what can be done. But then I thought what can I myself do? “I had this idea that a history trail could lead through the graveyard with signs telling the visitor which notable people are buried here. Anyone would be able to find the particular grave and pay their respects to the dead. Or for example, professional groups, such as mathematicians, physicists, and philosophers could find their great predecessors. Or teachers could tell their pupils about famous writers.” The first dead were buried in Olsany in 1680 during a plague. A chapel, now outside the cemetery, commemorates the epidemic. In 1787, Emperor Joseph II made Olsany the central cemetery for Prague. Located outside the city walls, it was a safer burial place than the old graveyards in an already overcrowded city. Father Milos Szabo is now rediscovering the history with a group of enthusiasts, in their free time and without any subsidies. “It is very demanding work because it involves examining every single grave, crawling through the thicket, cutting off the ivy, finding out who is buried there. Then I need to find out who the person was, look them up in the archives or in encyclopedias, take photos of the grave, write it all down, have the proofreading done, produce the actual sign and finally place it there. With the approval of the cemetery authority, this trail is gradually expanding. Now we have the first sector covered, the second is nearing completion, and I am already working on
