Achievement value

You are cordially invited to share

Saturday, August 1 celebrating the young people of SPJST at State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple. You will see some of the best crafts and talents in the state of Texas. And, our teens will amaze you in the king and queen competition with their public speaking abilities. The program begins at 11 a.m. with opening ceremonies. Beseda will be exhibited during this time. Talent then begins. More information about the event is on pages 1 and 3 of this week’s Vestnik. A schedule appears on the back page. The 20092010 royalty contestants are featured on pages 12 and 13. Districts One and Two Royalty were crowned on Sunday, July 26 — after Vestnik print time. They will be included in next week’s Vestnik. To the young people participating in the 2009 State YAD contests, I wish you much success with your entries. You are all winners. Best wishes!

Congratulations, Lodge 15! SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts celebrated its 100th anniversary and historical marker dedication on Sunday, July 19 with a well-organized, well-attended event at the lodge hall. It was truly a wonderful occasion. Lodge 15 has provided a community gathering place for many functions and special occasions over the years. It’s a fraternal lodge, social center, and dance hall. And, as the historical marker reads—it has been a Central Texas landmark for generations. Lodge 15 has survived. No storm . . . no thieves . . . no fire

could keep this lodge down. Lodge 15 has always been destined to achieve. A lodge, though, is only as good as its membership and supporters. If getting a historical marker was a quick and easy process, we would see them around us everywhere. The fact that this grand honor for SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts has been time-consuming — and I’m sure sometimes challenging — means that they did something truly worthwhile. It would have been much easier to do nothing. Yet by doing nothing, you create nothing. Instead, these lodge members and volunteers all stepped forward and did the research and legwork that needed to be done. With each effort, they added more value and substance to this achievement. Their work counts for something big because the goal of the historical marker was seen through to the finish. The value of any achievement is built with the time and effort you put into it. Because these volunteers kept going and were persistent in their efforts . . . they now have something of great value—for SPJST Lodge 15 and for the entire community. The lodge now feels the satisfaction of the challenging yet rewarding work towards this grand honor. By working towards the goal of getting the historical dedication, Lodge 15 has made its mark and preserved local history and Czech heritage for generations to come. Congratulations to Lodge 15. Lodge 15 — and its success — is truly an inspiration to others. Thank you for your dedication in seeing this project through. Best wishes for another 100 years. —SPJST—

Buckholts, a small farming community in northwestern Milam County, was established in 1881 on land donated by John A. Buckholts when the railroad came to the area. Immigrants settled here because of the farm land that produced cotton.1 The immigrants from Czechoslovakia arrived in Buckholts at the time the largest national fraternal benefit union for Czech immigrants was in the flux of change. The Cesco-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost had been organized in 1854 to serve the Czech immigrants with moral, spiritual, and economic well being. Another purpose was to foster and preserve the Czech language. In 1897, there were 27 CSPS lodges in Texas. In that same year, because of the national organization’s failure to listen to reform requests, the Texas Delegation seceded and gathered in La Grange to organize a new society. On July 1897, Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (SPJST) was organized. It was a “society with a purpose.” The lodge meetings and activities made the members feel at home in this new country and provided them with insurance. They learned to apply the democratic processes in their meetings and conventions. “They became better citizens in their adopted homeland.”2

Overview SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was originally formed with members from the Marak, Cameron, and Buckholts communities because Czech farmers saw the need of insurance for their families and believed the SPJST would give them the benefits of insurance plus the socials that are a heritage of the Czech people. The meeting places were rotated among the various communities. On October 17, 1907, the members voted to form a lodge, and Lodge 15 was permanently established in Buckholts, Texas. New lodges were given a charter and a name. SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was named “Svornost Jihu” which translated is “Southern Unity.”3 This name was never used and to this day, a lot of members have no idea what it means, according to longtime member Hilda Burtis.4 Plans and construction for the first hall were drawn up in December 1907 by Josef Slovacek and local members. The building was dedicated on July 4, 1911. The build-

ing was destroyed by a storm in 1915. The next (second) building was constructed immediately afterwards by Architect Josef Tydlacka from Temple, Texas. In March 1936, the second building was destroyed by fire. The fire was deliberately set by bank robbers in order to lure the townfolks to fight the fire while they robbed the bank in Buckholts. There was no fire department or running water so the only way they had to extinguish the fire was to put a barrel on a sled drawn by horses and the water was hand dipped out of a dirt pond.5 Elise Brady, who was born and raised in Buckholts, was in school the day of the fire. She says the children saw the fire, and all started running to see. The teachers kept calling them to come back, but that was one time they did not mind the teacher, and they all ended up at the fire.6 The members wasted no time in building another hall. Three months after the fire on June 7, 1936, the present octagonshaped building was built.7 The head carpenters on the building were Aley Horstman and Jeff Reeder. Frank Tomascik helped build the present building and remembers hauling in the lumber by wagon from the railroad depot. He also received 35 cents an hour for wages, which was above average at that time.8 Times have really changed since the building was built in 1936. In the beginning, there were no kitchen facilities, no inside bathrooms, no air conditioning, and only windows for ventilation. Benches lined the walls of the building inside where mothers and daughters would sit, and the boys had to ask to dance with them. Now, everyone sits at tables. The barbecue pits were holes in the ground with wire mesh over the meat and a hay pitchfork to turn the meat.9 Arches characterized the interior of the building, but were covered up when the ceiling was lowered, and air conditioning was installed. The organization has many loyal mem-

bers who have served in leadership roles. Patricia Kamenicky Hillman was elected president in 1967. She was the first female and the youngest president at that time. She received her 50-year pin in 1999. Charlsie Svetlik joined the lodge in 1947, served as sales representative, secretary for 40 years, and continues to be an active member. Mr. Joe Zajicek never missed a lodge meeting until his death in 2007, a few days short of his 100th birthday. The barbecue crew of Raymond Zajicek, Willie Orsag, Anton Svetlik, Henry Stalmach, J.D. Ruzicka, and Edward Svoboda served faithfully in that position from 1936 to 1986.10 To many people who are not members, Buckholts SPJST represents social functions. Dances, barbecues, receptions, fundraisers, commercial entertainment, and social clubs all continue to this day. Many famous bands, as well as local bands have played and still play here. The Vrazels managed the hall from 1957 to 1971.11 Radio station KTAE from Taylor used to broadcast live shows from the SPJST hall in the 1950s: Jimmy Heap, Hank Thompson, along with Bob Wills were on the show. Other famous names who played were Slim Whitman, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, Billy Walker, Kitty Wells, and Little Jimmy Dickens. Also, Vrazels’ Polka Band, Pearl Polka Masters, Majek’s, Joe Patek, Slim Haisler and His Playboys, Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra, Lee Ilse Orchestra, Jimmy Brosch, Sil Krenek, Frank Konvicka, Rudy Kurtz, Hi Toppers, Henry Brosch, Adolph Migl, West Melodians, Kaluza Polka Band, Fritz Hodde, Otis Beck, and The Best Yets, Ellinger Combo, Kocurek’s Rythm Tones, Blue Vest Polka Boys, The Combinations, The Rhine Steins, George Marchart, Henry Duloch, Sealy Playboys, Bob Haisler, Cloverleafs Orchestra, Emil Bartosh, Bill Henderson and The Sundowners, Jerry Haisler, The Moods, Country Expressions, Music Masters, plus many others.

Third and present hall built in 1936.

Significance The present SPJST location has had three structures; two of the three were destroyed by a storm and fire. After each disaster, a new hall was built almost immediately because of its significance and value to the community. The present building was built in 1936 and retains its original appeal. It always attracts attention and questions from passing motorists. It also brings a smile to folks who remember the happy events they attended there. The hall still retains its original hardwood floors, with a few patches here and there, but it is still one of the best dance floors in the country. The membership is very proud of its old building and continues to keep it in good repair for future generations to continue to enjoy. For over 100 years, the building has represented Czech heritage in the community. It has served its Czech population well, and it has reached out to the rest of the area as a place where all are welcome. A Texas Historical Marker is a very deserving tribute to this special place.

called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, and all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to our member Rosie Steinman and family on the loss of her son Donald Steinman on June 29. Donald was a wonderful son to Rosie, and he will be missed by all his family. President Mary Ann reminded everyone that August is a designated month in which we bring food items for St. Thomas Food Bank. All food banks are in need during these difficult times, so we hope everyone will be as generous as possible. Lydia Alholm showed our ad in the 22nd American Sokol Slet/International Sport and Cultural Festival program book. She and Rose Ann Spann gave a brief review of the week’s activities, and Lydia reported that 12 of our members served as volunteers at which time we all wore yellow teeshirts with “volunteer” printed on the back and the festival emblem on the front. Everyone enjoyed visiting with folks from all over the United States and other countries, especially the Czech Republic. Below are excerpts from the Sokol St. Louis newsletter written by Carla Strnad. Sokol slets have always impressed me with all the energy, enthusiasm, commitment, effort, and tradition that each unit brings with them. The parade held one morning through the streets of downtown Fort Worth was great fun. People from shops, offices, and cafes (even construction workers) were curious about these happy, lively people in red, white, and blue! We were given yellow bubble necklaces with “Sokol”

printed on them, and blew bubbles and sang Czech songs to keep things lively. We ended up at the convention center where there was a brief welcome program from a Fort Worth representative, a “Czech” welcome to our many travelers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and Larry Laznovsky, President of Sokol. (Editor’s Note: Larry Laznovsky, member of SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis, is president of the American Sokol Organization, headquartered in Oakbrook, Illinois.)

The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra impressively played our marching music and anthems which really added a special touch. I am always so proud (and emotional) to be part of the grand march. Everyone walks with such enthusiasm and deep respect for everything Sokol represents, not only for ourselves, but for many of us our loyal ancestors. The slet program showcased the excellent efforts of young and old, with traditional and contemporary calisthenic routines, district tug-of-war, lively folk dancing, two couples doing acrobatic dancing. The finale had about 1,000 of us out on the floor with our red and blue teeshirts! News Anna Johnson is looking forward to the Johnson family reunion to be held at her cousin’s home in Southlake. Don’t you know there will be a lot of visiting. It was nice to visit with Maggie Grmela and Clarice Snokhous of West at Maggie’s booth in the exhibit hall, and I even bought some CDs. I always

enjoy listening to polkas and waltzes when driving down the road. While in the exhibit hall, I also stopped by the SPJST booth and added my artistic touch to “The Fine Art of Fraternalism” project. It was pretty full by this time, but I did find a small place to add my art work. From viewing these two panels, one could tell the project went over real well. I enjoyed all the photos in last week’s Věstník. Congratulations go out to my niece Jessica Kosarek who will graduate in August from the University of Texas at Arlington with a bachelor of science degree in biology. My family was saddened by the passing of our Aunt Ann Patril on June 16. She lived in Corsicana except for the last few years when she lived at St. Joseph’s Retirement Village in Coppell. She was the last known Patril, my mother’s family name, and with her passing, the name also died. I missed being with everyone at the dining out social in July and look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on August 5 at the St. Thomas Parish Hall. Don’t forget to bring food items for the St. Thomas Food Bank and your luncheon dish to share. See you there. Stay cool! So until, keep smiling, Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

White Shirts

by d.knape of Lodge 187, Round Rock

For 30 years I went to work everyday, a clean white shirt Ten white shirts were what I owned starched so crisp they stood alone

Dipped in Faultless by the piece ironed faultlessly without a crease White shirts were the uniform in bygone days they were the norm On summer days without A/C white shirts prevailed, 100 degrees Long-sleeved and buttoned to the cuff they chafed and chapped, the skin

wore off

Still, they were the common dress for anything from births to deaths and mine remain, I still revert the style has changed, just can’t convert

for those white shirts are souvenirs reminding me of younger years too many years to change my quirks I still wear . . . those darn white shirts! —SPJST—

Lodge 24, Cyclone youth rides ENC motorboats

Dear Readers, From July 12 to 15, I attended District Two Camp in Brownwood, Texas. This was my second time to be an LIT at camp, and I enjoyed working with the younger children as well as my peers. The main emphasis at our camp this year was the nearby lake. Campers were able to swim, canoe, and—my personal favorite—ride tubes pulled by the SPJST ENC’s new motorboats.

At the camp, we also enjoyed the pool, crafts, horseshoes, slip and slide, rifle range, night hike, and dancing. We even took a field trip to a nearby park and Brownwood country club pool. Although we had a smaller group than usual, I really enjoyed this year’s camp and look forward to the next one. I would like to thank all the helpful people who planned, organized, chaperoned, and cooked at camp! Fraternally, Sam Vanicek —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, I have been having a lot of fun recently. We just got home from Hot Springs, Arkansas. We did many fun things there. We played miniature golf. The mini golf was fun. There were 18 holes. We golfed on a pirate

We stayed at Holiday Inn. We swam in an indoor swimming pool. We went to a bath house museum. It cost $6 million to remodel it. At the museum, Misty and I became Junior Park Rangers. We had to answer questions about the bath houses.

Dear Members, The July meeting of Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club was held while we attended camp at the SPJST ENC July 10 to 12, 2009. We had a lot of fun, especially at the lake. State YAD is almost here — Saturday, August 1. Good luck to all those participating.

Next Meeting—August 23 Our next meeting is scheduled for August 23. Keep checking the Vestnik for further updates and upcoming events. Fraternally, Jessica Schoen, age 8 Reporter —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, My summer has been anything but boring! I passed kindergarten and now will be going to first grade at Floresville Primary. I had perfect attendance and citizenship! I had my Hermann Sons dance recital in May and received a perfect attendance trophy. In karate, I received an academic merit award for having all checks and check pluses for school. All the karate kids who received the merit award were invited to go on stage in front of hundreds of people. It was cool! I just

We voted to go to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels and have a picnic lunch. We also talked about District YAD, LIT camp, and regular camp. Fraternally, Brooke Henke —SPJST—

Lodge 107 Floresville youth attends HS camp

Dear Vestnik Readers, I hope everyone is keeping cool. I have had an awesome summer even though it has been hot. I ended my third grade year with perfect attendance and all As as well as numerous other awards. I attended my first Hermann Sons camp in Comfort, Texas. I was so excited because I was able to pick the activities I wanted. I chose flag football, rocketry, archery, riflery, tennis, and swimming. I learned so much.

When I go back to camp next year, I will get a bigger rocket to build. We could launch our rockets, but I decided not to because I wanted to show my dad. We went to a dance over at the girls’ camp. We had to hike through the woods to get there. Yes, the camp counselors went with us! At the end of camp, we each received a bead to put on our necklace and every year we go back, we add another bead. The theme for the week I was there was “Wild, Wild West.” I cannot wait to go back! We spent a week at Medina Lake. My sister and I talked our mom into going with us in the paddle boat. We went all the way around the cove which is not that small. I packed an ice

chest with drinks and snacks. Had a blast! We went fishing off of a friend’s dock and caught about 15 pan size perch. That was so awesome! My mom was catching minnows for us to use as bait. We caught a couple of bass, but they were too small. I can’t wait until we go to Schlitterbahn as our youth club outing. Respectfully, Ryan Henke, age 9 —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Museum, Temple needs volunteers

The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at Third and French in Temple, is looking for volunteers with various skills and all skill levels. Recently, the museum completed the renovation of the historic Northside Business Center to be used as the museum and research library. The move process has begun, and we need help. Carpenters and wannabe carpenters are needed right away to help build display sets and refurbish the display cases. Books and artifacts need to be catalogued and shelved, and artifacts need to be researched, cleaned and prepared for display. In addition to preparing displays, some light landscaping needs to be done, and we need some experienced retailers to help establish the gift shop. Other needs are for painting, cleaning, decorating, clerical, etc. Normally, the building is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and we will maintain these hours until the museum opening, but the staff is very flexible and is willing to open whenever volunteers are willing to help. In addition to these volunteer jobs, we are searching for a person to help establish an auxiliary for the museum, Czech Feszt volunteers, and possible new board members. Ellis County CHS hosts night under the stars

The Ellis County Czech Heritage Society, Ennis Chapter would like to thank all who attended our “Night Under the Stars” on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the Lakeview Marina on Bardwell Lake. We also wish to extend a big thank you to Vic and Sandy Pochobradsky, owners of the marina, for extending us an invitation to use their terrace for a rather unique endeavor. For the enjoyment of our members, and friends, we have been showing Czech movies at our Ennis Public Library for over a year now, but due to some renovation being done at the library presently, we were invited by Vic and Sandy to use their grounds at the marina, and so with the sponsorship of the Ennis Art’s Commission and the coverage of this new event in the Ennis Daily News, our “Night Under the Stars” was a great success. We invited everyone to join us, to

bring their chairs, bottled water, and bug spray, and at about 8:30 p.m., we all settled back and enjoyed the Czech movie “A Night at Karlstejn Castle.” The musical-comedy proved to be very entertaining and the plot revolved around Charles IV, a Czech king who built Karlstejn Castle to house the Crown Jewels and as a place for peaceful contemplation for men only. His new young wife upon hearing this resolves to sneak in for a night and also at the same time, a country girl needs to prove that she, too, can spend a night at the castle in order to get her fiance’s father to agree to their marriage. Needless to say, the plot thickened and at times those present just had to laugh out loud. We do appreciate Vic and Sandy Pochobradsky allowing us the use of their grounds, and it was voted in after the movie that we do this again as with the evening breeze, the stars overhead and the entertaining film, it was a perfect way to spend an evening. The website archive has over 1,000 hours of videos related to Czech heritage and could be replayed at any time. Go to Czech-American TV website at www.catvusa.com and click on the CATV Live button on the right side. Survival of Wenceslas Squareʼs sausage stands assured

It’s hard to imagine a Wenceslas Square without sausage stands, selling hot dogs, greasy Czech klobasas, and beer. It had seemed such fast-food stalls would be removed, as part of a major project to regenerate Prague’s best known thoroughfare. But in the face of public opposition, the city’s authorities have now backed down. Wenceslas Square is glittering, but looking a bit dusty and aged. The square is about to get a facelift from architect Jakub Cigler to restore it to its former glory. The original plan was to get rid of the noisy traffic and parked cars which line the thoroughfare, and to do away with one of the square’s other most distinctive features – its sausage stands.

to get rid of them, saying that they were a source of litter and attracted homeless people scavenging for leftovers. The council promised to do away with the stands by 2012.

reminded the council that the sausage stands were a historic feature of the square at the time of the First Republic. Prague City Hall relented. Sausage stands will remain on Wenceslas Square after its renovation, but there will be less of them, and they won’t be open 24 hours a day as is currently the case. The outlets will be banned from selling all hard liquor, but beer will still be sold on tap. — Rosie Johnston

Another complaint? That these stands sold alcohol. City Hall said it had received numerous complaints from businesses lining the square about the food outlets’ clientele and the noise they produced. Things were looking bleak for the sausage stand until the general public intervened. Over 9,000 people signed a petition which forced Prague Council to backtrack on its decision. Sausage-loving journalist Miloš Čermák wrote a front-page column in one of the country’s biggest newspapers protesting against the plan. Protestors

There are sausage stands every 50 or so metres along both sides of Wenceslas Square. As well as selling greasy but strangely delicious klobasa - a Czech sausage much like German ‘wurst’ - their menus offer Czech staples like fried cheese and frankfurters. It looks like the stands are doing good trade. But not everyone is a fan. In December, Prague City Hall decided
