Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

SPJST participates at Westfest David and I enjoyed visiting with members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood at their booth at Westfest on September 5. What hard-working lodge members to prepare so many delicious sausage and sauerkraut boats for fest attendees! Hats off to Lodge 6 members for hosting a booth on the fairgrounds each year. Thanks for representing SPJST so well. Newly crowned State King Jackson Durham, State Queen Grace Dusek, State Duke Brandon Droste, and State Duchess Andi LaFountain officially began their year of statewide appearances at Westfest on September 5. The State Royalty did a fantastic job representing SPJST in the parade and at Westfest. SPJST hosted “The Art of Fraternalism” at its booth in the cultural amphitheatre. Participants created another work of art that will be displayed at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. SPJST also sponsored the horseshoe tournament at Westfest. Many teams entered—142 teams on Saturday and 106 teams on Sunday. Great participation!

Katelynʼs Progress The SPJST Float participated in the Westfest parade in West on September 5; however, it wasn’t the same without Miss Katelyn Daniel of Lodge 183, Arlington smiling and waving along the route. The September 2 Vestnik included information on page 2 about Katelyn recently being diagnosed with ALL. The article should have read that Katelyn’s aunt is Lodge 183 President Ann Pustejovsky. We regret the error. Katelyn is doing better and in great spirits—and we can’t wait to have her riding the float at next year’s West-

fest parade. Cards and well wishes can be mailed to Katelyn in care of Lodge 183, Arlington at 3100 Pleasant Valley Lane in Arlington, Texas 76015. A website has been set up to follow Katelyn’s progress: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kat elyndaniel. Best wishes, Katelyn!

Excellence This week’s Vestnik features a section called Excellence on pages 4 to 9. It includes updates on SPJST’s 2009 membership program — Heritage ’09. The section also recognizes SPJST’s top sales agents and provides information for our agents. In the future, we hope to expand on this monthly section and include a listing of sales agents and their contact information. If you have any ideas, let me know. Thanks!

2010 Lodge and Youth Club Calendar Dates Requested Now is the time to submit important dates for the 2010 SPJST Calendar. Please send in your district’s, lodge’s, and youth club’s important 2010 dates. These should be annual events (not monthly events). The deadline to submit dates is October 1, 2009. Submit dates to Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503; fax: (254) 774-7447, Attn: Melanie; or email: melaniez@vvm.com. Thank you for your contributions to the 2010 calendar, and I look forward to hearing from you by October 1! —SPJST—

Minutes of a Special-Called Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas on August 21, 2009

3

The purpose of the meeting is to consider the matter of increasing our rate of commissions to the sales representatives including the hearing of a report on this matter by Actuary Allen Bailey. The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m. by Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Brian Vanicek, President Johnnie Krizan – District Three Gene McBride, Vice President Billy Rollwitz – District Four Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Larry W. Pflughaupt - District Five Donnie Victorick – District One Michael Ahlstrom – District Six Supreme Lodge Chairman Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Bobby Wuensche – District Two Robert J. Bayer – District Seven

Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas was present to participate in the deliberations. The meeting was opened by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our armed forces. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer.

Actuary Allen Bailey, Dave Ramsey and Kirk Gravely were present to assist with the evaluation of the commission study and the decision on the commission rate.

Vice President McBride discussed the reason we need to evaluate and increase our commission rates. Vice President McBride asked Actuary Bailey to review the process of documenting current sales program compensation. He handed out and reviewed detailed analysis of product profitability on various products sold by the SPJST. He discussed analysis illustrating the total commission cost after adding persistency bonus and overrides. Actuary Bailey reviewed the methodology of determining the incremental cost of adding on a policy and use of that cost in pricing new certificates. He then reviewed studies of all products which illustrated a breakeven year of four to seven years. He reviewed an eighteen page report providing extensive analysis of product profitability and issues to be addressed and decided by the Supreme Lodge. Various questions asked by Supreme Lodge members were addressed and clarified. The review and discussion focused on the practice of paying advance commissions, agent persistency, and agent recruiting.

Upon discussing illustration software, it was agreed that agents would be required to download updates to change interest rates on annuities and universal life rather than changing the rates in their existing software. Recess for lunch was taken from 12:20 until 1:03 p.m.

The status of Universal Life in-force illustrations was reviewed and discussed.

On unanimously adopted motion by Director Bayer, seconded by Director Rollwitz, commissions to our sales agents were adjusted as recommended. The Supreme Lodge went into executive session from 1:50 until 2:10 p.m.

On motion by Director Ahlstrom, seconded by Director Rollwitz, the meeting adjourned at 2:10 p.m. Fraternally submitted, Leonard Mikeska, Secretary Treasurer —SPJST—

Members Ages 40 to 75: Special Offer Expanded

SPJST members between the ages of 40 and 75 were recently mailed a special offer; however, due to numerous calls that we have received, we are sending out the special offer again— but this time, we are expanding our offer. The original offer was mailed to all members between the ages of 40 and 75. For a limited time, SPJST is offering its loyal members the opportunity to acquire an additional $5,000 in whole life coverage. We are also offering a single premium lone pay life. Relaxed underwriting standards enable us to extend this offer with little or no underwriting requirements. No physical or blood work is necessary. If you have been considering increasing your coverage but didn’t know if you would qualify, now is the time to take action! Individual rates based on your pres-

ent age will be listed in the special offer letter. The envelope will also contain a simple application to be completed and returned with your premium. We are sending out these special offers to more than 20,000 members beginning with members in District One, Lodge 1. If you are between the ages of 40 and 75, and you do not receive your special offer letter by October 1, please give us a call at the SPJST Home Office. If you need more information on this limited time offer or any other SPJST life insurance product, please call us at (800) 727-7578. Agents’ E&O Coverage Renewal Time

On Friday, August 28, 2009, the Insurance Department mailed a memo to all agents with information about this year’s Errors and Omissions Coverage Renewal. All agents must respond to this mailout. SPJST will be held responsible if you are not covered by E&O. If you have E&O coverage for other life products, you can simply fax to (254) 774-1456 or mail your declaration page showing that SPJST products are covered. If you do not have E&O coverage, we are offering a very reasonable rate for E&O coverage. The cost is $40 per year, and the coverage is effective August 1, 2009, through August 1, 2010. The amount of coverage you will have

is $1 million for each occurrence with a $1 million aggregate and a deductible of $15,000. This only covers SPJST products—not any other company’s products. You can make your check or money order payable to SPJST for $40 and place it in the postage paid envelope that was enclosed in the mailout. All declaration pages or $40 must be in the Home Office no later than October 23, 2009. If we do not have them by that time, we will being reviewing those agents’ contracts for termination. If you have any questions, please contact Frank Horak in the SPJST Insurance Department (800) 727-7578 or email frankh@spjst.com. —SPJST—

Working for Excellence

By Karen Kaspar, FIC, CFFM State Field Representative - Districts Five/Six/Seven

The month of September for the Heritage ’09 year brings myself as state field representative for our SPJST organization for Districts Five, Six, and Seven. We have had meetings in the Corpus and San Antonio areas and have visited with agents in the Houston area as well. It has been so good getting to know a number of you through telephone visits—as well as the meetings. I look forward to seeing you at lodge meetings, district meetings, upcoming training classes, and personally out in the field. I invite you to give me a call (979) 332-1616. End-of-Year Classes For the District Six area, I will be holding end-of-year classes in October to cover updates, supplies, training, progress for the member service program, and any additional information for all agents. All classes will begin at 6 p.m. Class dates and locations are: Wednesday, October 14 Frank’s Restaurant in Schulenburg IH 10 and Highway 77 (District One area agents are also invited to attend.) Thursday, October 15 SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria Hall 3502 North Laurent

Tuesday, October 20 Taiton Community Center FM 961 and Highway 71

Please give me a call if you are attending the classes so I can plan on how many to prepare for each class. Also, please bring your training manual and your tracking status on the member service follow-up. District Five and District Seven classes will be scheduled for November. Please look for your dates in the October sales agents’ Excellence section in an upcoming October weekly Vestnik.

District Seven Sales Update District Seven had 15 agents have 21 certificates issued for the month of August and accomplished a first place spot statewide with more than $1.7 million issued and second place statewide for the 21 certificates issued. Congratulations!

District Six Sales Update District Six showed eight agents

have 18 certificates issued for almost $.5 million issued. This included Carolina Covarrubia reaching her goal of monthly Associate Agent Top Producer for District Six in both the insurance issued and earned premium categories. And, Carolina successfully garnered the State Top Producer honor in the earned premium category. Also, Sheldon Holub continues to be the only one statewide who is continuing to have a minimum of two certificates issued each and every month this year for the consistency club incentive. Great job to you both! District Five Sales Update District Five was represented during the month of August with seven agents having 23 certificates issued to accomplish a first place finish statewide and their $1.3 million insurance issued had them capture a second place statewide. Congratulations also to associate agent Cecil Penright for winning top producer for District Five in both the insurance issued and earned premium categories. Still to Come . . . For next month’s October news update, I will recognize Million Dollar Producers across the three districts with issued million dollar production through the end of the third quarter. And, do take note that the top 20 $1 Million Dollar Producer winners for Heritage ’09 will include agents that accomplish 80 to 100 percent persistency.

Heritage ’09 Member Service Program

SPJST introduced the member service program in the spring. Since then, sales agents across the state have been contacting members to review their life insurance certificates and ensure that all information on file at the Home Office is correct. Agents are reviewing items like name changes, contact information, and beneficiary designations. Agents can also answer most questions about certificates and membership in general. Forms that are completed with updated information are entered into a drawing held monthly at the Home Office. Winners receive $100 for the member and $100 for the agent. Con-

gratulations to:

September Drawing (for August forms received) Member - Kimberly Blaha Lodge 17, New Tabor Sales Agent Susan Skrabanek Lodge 17, New Tabor

Agents will continue to contact members. When your agent calls and asks to review your certificate and update information—it may be worth $100 if you are next month’s Member Service Program contest winner! Good luck! —SPJST—

What If Tomorrow Never Comes? By Hiram Dixon, FICF, LUTCF, CFFM State Field Representative - Districts One/Two/Three

While I was driving over in East Texas yesterday, Garth was on the radio singing his song “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and my mind turned to our members. Maybe this is kind of cheesy, but think of this: If tomorrow never comes . . . will your clients know how much you cared for them did you try in every way to protect their families and if their time on earth were through and they must face the world without a breadwinner is the insurance protection you gave them in the past gonna be enough to last if tomorrow never comes cause I have lost clients in my life who never knew how much I cared for them now I live with the regret that my service to them was never completed

so I made a promise to myself to tell my clients just how much I care for them and avoid that circumstance where there is no second chance to protect their families

I know this will never be heard on the radio—much less be a hit, but just think what happens if tomorrow never comes for your clients. The banker, attorney, butcher, baker, auto carmaker cannot do what you do. You have an awesome responsibility—yet golden opportunity—to ensure that the financial lives of your clients will be protected if tomorrow never comes. So talk to your families, your friends and clients and help them understand that we as their insurance agents can— with the stroke of a pen—create an immediate estate to care for their families if tomorrow never comes. —SPJST—

Lodge 63 Sweet Home plans picnic in the park

It’s time for our annual picnic in the park! On Sunday, September 20, 2009, beginning at 12 noon, Lodge 63, Sweet Home will have its picnic at the Green-Dickson Park in Shiner. It is a lovely park with many campsites, a playground for the kids, and (usually) a flowing creek where we hold a fishing tournament for the kids. This year, however, with the extensive drought, there is very little water for our tournament. So instead of fishing, we hope to have other games for our youth. We will begin with a social hour at 12 noon, followed by hot dogs and

hamburgers with all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring a dessert if they wish. Someone with a birthday in July, August, or September will win a birthday cake baked by Ann Moseley. After the meal, a short business meeting will be held. Door prizes will be awarded after the meeting. If by chance there is inclement weather, call Donald Zabransky (361) 293-6271 for the new picnic location. I hope to see all of you at our annual outing on September 20! Inside, the adults played dominoes, cards, or just visited. We also had folks playing ping-pong and air hockey as well as other board games.

Sunday, August 23, 2009 • Lodge 48, Beyersville Hall

The best treat was for the girls who had their faces painted so decoratively by Ellen Hannington. At 4 p.m., John Wuensche and Robert Leshikar along with their lovely assistants fired (operative word for one of the guys!) up their grills. It wasn’t long before the smell of fresh grilled wieners and hamburgers brought us to our knees. After a prayer, we all ate. We had about 20 door prizes for the kids and 10 for the adults. The kids went home ready for bed with the early morning buzz of school starting.

The rest of us - well, we’re just tired, but thankful for such a great turnout and support from our sister lodges. We were so glad that Ray Nelson and his family made it from Elgin. Jesse and Linda Pospisil, their grandchildren, the Frankie Pustejovskys as well as Steve, Theresa, Kaitlyn, Allison, Jordyn Cocke, joined us from the Taylor lodge along with Lucille Trcka and Anton Pokorny. We thank the Larry Beran family for the donation of the buns, the Jody Wolfs for getting all the meat pre-

pared, John and Roger for grilling, the committee for getting everything else together, and the members for bringing the desserts and working. Together, we make it happen. Next year, we are hoping to invite all of District Two to join us for this last day of summer break. We express our gratitude to Lodge 18, Elgin for its generous donation of $100 towards our expenses. Fraternally, Denisse Wuensche, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston seeks bar help

Greetings, Vestnik Readers! Well, school has started, but the activities keep going strong. Thursday night bingo at the lodge had a great summer showing—a little slower, but still keeping us busy. The Ladies Go Texan Committee put on a fundraiser and auction on August 22, and we had a great turnout for that. Saturday dances have picked up, and we are still doing well with rentals. That said, we are looking for some bar help with these events. We serve beer, soda and water so no past bar experience is needed. Thursday night

Keeping teen drivers safe behind the wheel

(StatePoint) For many kids and parents, the term “back-to-school” conjures trips to the mall for school supplies and new clothes, and an end to summer vacations. For many teens heading off to high school and college, it may mean their first set of keys and, finally, their own car. Regardless of how excited your child is about driving, the idea of putting a teen behind the wheel and the cost associated with doing so can be daunting for any parent. However, teaching teens to drive safely and putting them in safe and affordable vehicles can help calm parental nerves. For starters, teen drivers should learn to pay attention in the front seat. Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents among teens, as many are preoccupied with cell phones, texting and fiddling with MP3 players. According to a new survey of young drivers conducted by the National Organizations for Youth Safety and the Allstate Foundation, an alarming 83 percent of teens admit they talk on cell phones while driving and 68 percent confess to texting behind the wheel. Teaching teens to drive safely is only part of the solution. The cars young drivers drive can be just as important as how they drive them. Many parents peruse Craig's List or other Web sites for used vehicles for their sons and daughters, with mixed results. While inexpensive vehicles can be found through these channels, many of these vehicles come with checkered pasts and without warranties or safety certifications. Certified pre owned vehicles - used vehicles that pass a rigorous screening process administered by the auto manufacturer - offer the best of both worlds. Most automobile manufacturers offer certified pre owned programs that provide varying levels of assurance and vehicle inspections. For instance, Toyota's Certified Used Vehicle (TCUV) program ensures a particularly rigorous process when it comes to safety. As previously-owned Toyota vehicles are turned in at dealerships, Toyota inspects them to determine which have potential to become a TCUV. These vehicles then undergo a minimum 160-point manufacturer inspection process that scrutinizes safety features, maintenance and up-

keep, and makes any necessary repairs and updates. Those that pass are given the TCUV label and find their way back onto a Toyota certified dealer lot. A certified pre-owned vehicle will not only receive inspection by a certified mechanic, but may also receive a CARFAX report for possible past accidents in which the vehicle may have been involved and a check of the automaker's recall and repair program database to ensure it has received manufacturer recommended modifications. Of course, when it comes to buying a car for teens, price is almost always a consideration. Here, too, certified pre-owned vehicles shine. Automakers like Toyota and its TCUV program provide the perks of buying a new vehicle -- including new-car financing rates and a factory backed warranty -benefits the average used car doesn't offer. And shopping for certified pre owned vehicles is as easy as hitting the Web, as most offer Web sites like TCUV's site at www.toyotacertified.com. No one wants to see their little ones grow up and take to the road, but at least you can send them off safely without breaking the bank. —SPJST—

Victoria Czech Heritage Festival set for Sept. 27

The 24th Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival is getting organized, and plans are for another big celebration on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at the Victoria Community Center, located at 2905 East North Street. The festival is sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society (VCCHS) and has drawn well over 1,000 people consistently for more than a decade. As usual, the festival’s first event is a televised Czech-English Mass celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral in Victoria by Reverend Joseph Hybner from the Flatonia Catholic Parish. The public is invited to attend the Mass starting at 9 a.m. Once the Mass is celebrated, events really kick off at the festival site. Events at the Community Center begin promptly at 10 a.m. with five musical events held throughout the day. Local accordionist Pat Matula will perform first engaging the crowd in traditional Czech entertainment. The Shiner Hobo Band takes over at 11 a.m. and entertains all until 1 p.m. followed by the Czechaholics, a fairly

The Red Ravens follow solo continuing with good dancing music until 7:30 p.m. Special attraction for this year is Michelle Jenee Barak – 2009 Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen. Miss Barak is the daughter of Alan and Marita (Novak) Barak of Ennis, Texas, and is a member of Ellis County Czech Heritage Society. The Fourth Annual Homemade Beer and Wine Show and the Czech cultural demonstrations are back again due to high interest. Nearly 100 entries have been entered in the past, brought in from home and small backyard breweries and vineyards from throughout the state. The show was added several years ago as many people including Czechs do still enjoy and participate in this art and tradition. Several classes in the show are set in each division including: Beer – light, amber, dark and novelty; and Wine – dry and sweet classes of red, white, novelty, and kit wines plus a dessert wine and, due to high number of entries, a special class for red wine made from the Texas wild Mustang grapes. Entry forms submitted by September 18 qualify for a discounted

entry fee of only $6 per entry with rules and regulations posted at VCCHS’s website: http://victoriaczechs.org . Due to popular demand, there is even a time being planned after judging for public to taste many of the entries! Czechs are long in tradition and, as a result, have added several cultural demonstrations to this year’s festival again. Attendees in the past have learned how to make poppyseed kolaches, Czech-style cheese rolls, homemade beer, wine, and noodles. Similar programs are planned for 2009 including churning cream into butter; (others demonstrations yet to be announced). The festival will continue to serve its famous Czech stew and sausage lunch plate for $7 each which starts at

Czech Heritage Society members from throughout the state of Texas are celebrating October as the month to appreciate and share their proud Czech culture and heritage. The Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend Chapter will hold a memorable celebration event on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at the Old South Plantation, located north of Richmond at 5227 Skinner Lane. All members of the Fort Bend chapter are invited and the occasion is open to everyone. You don’t have to be Czech to attend. Czech Heritage Month is an opportunity for Czech-Americans to preserve their ethnicity, history, culture, customs, traditions, and language. The focus is to promote the numerous contributions made by ethnic immigrants and Czech-Americans to the strength and vitality of the state of Texas and the nation. A beautiful wooded country setting, located north of Richmond off of FM 359, complete with a stocked lake on the grounds of an old plantation with a large home, chapel, and a visitors center set up to accommodate many visitors on the covered patio including a fireplace and inside with dining and kitchen facilities is the site for the celebration. Chris Rybak will bring his high energy style of accordion music that attracts the attention of all ages. In 1993, Chris received the New Dawn Award from the Texas Polka Music Association and hopes to compete for a national Grammy Award in the near future. His goal is to bring back the popularity of accordion music and to share it with as wide of an audience as possible. Smart Boy

Hello, and welcome to SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language course in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by the group Chinaski and is called “Chytrej kluk” – or smart boy. Chytrej kluk means smart boy or clever boy and in this case, the lyrics go: “when a smart boy meets a pretty girl, it’s not a foregone conclusion,

Page 27

he’ll first add up what she would cost him, and then decide whether to approach her.” Not very romantic, but then Chinaski usually keep their feet very much on the ground. There are a number of negative phrases you are likely to hear in connection with the word smart or chytrej – people often say —chytrej jako radio — meaning clever as the radio about someone who has an answer to everything and talks far too much. A more modern version of that is chytrej jako Wikipedie – smart as

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Wikipedia. And I’ve also heard chytrej jako novinář smart as a journalist. Nice isn’t it? Though not entirely flattering.

There are a few quaint, old-fashioned Czech phrases denoting cleverness, though you are not likely to hear them very often these days. Older people may mention that someone has an open head – má hlavu otevřenou meaning open to new information. In other words, they are not thickheaded. Or they may say that someone or other has been eating a lot of smart porridge – jedl vtipnou kaši. Of course, I was fed that all the time, which is why I am now as smart as the radio. October is Czech Heritage Month!

Texas Czech Heritage Month is October 1 through 31. All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this month-long commemorate. As we are celebrating, we are remembering the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The purpose of this event is to preserve and promote the many contributions made by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans, and to honor our ancestors. The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as “Texas Czech Heritage Month.” The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange. The TravisWilliamson Czech Heritage Society, during the presidency of Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed. The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance— Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918. This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas:

Plan now for Czech Heritage Month

The clock is ticking! It is time to get on the band wagon and start thinking about what can be done to honor the heritage of this state’s Czech descendants. During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas, signed by Governor George W. Bush. In addition, on July 1, 1999, the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring the month of October annually be Czech Heritage Month in Texas commemorating the contributions of Czech culture to the State. This special month of October is to be celebrated annually as “Czech Her-
