SPJST lodges across the state sponsor Czech activities throughout the year. Many lodges emphasize Czech events during October’s Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Pictured above, SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Orchestra and Choral Group perform at a past Czech Day celebration at Lodge 88. This year’s 44th Annual Czech Day is Sunday, October 25 at the lodge hall, located at 1435 Beall Street. Activities include a dance, Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day contest, homemade ice cream, Czech pastries, country store, Czech music, crafts, and lunch. See more information on pages 10 and 29.
On Saturday, October 31, cars of all shapes, sizes and colors will be rolling into Miller Park in Temple and put on display for the enjoyment of Czech Feszt attendees. Miller Park is approximately 10 blocks north of the SPJST Home Office. Most of the cars are nostalgic and a few are even unique, but all have had a lot of love and attention from their owners. They are polished and pristine and ready to be judged for the “Best of Show” or the “People’s Choice” trophies. Many have won several trophies at other shows, but there are entrants that this will be their first show. The cars will have the opportunity to be evaluated by a panel of judges in 32 categories with trophies going to the first, second and third place winners. The People’s Choice Award is decided by festival attendees who choose to vote. Ballots will be available at the registration table. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and judging begins at 12 noon. The winners will be announced at 4 p.m.
from the main stage. Pre-registration is recommended, but not required. For more information, call Melanie or Katherine at the SPJST Home Office (254) 773-1575 or David (254) 5340809. The car show is sponsored by SPJST and American Bank of Texas. Registration forms are on page 16 or may be downloaded from www.spjst.org. This is the third year for Czech Feszt, and it promises to be the biggest and best yet. Entertainment begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Along with some outstanding music, provided by Brave Combo, Fritz Hodde, champion accordionist Mike Middleton, Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five, and others, there will be a return of the fast-moving pig scramble, a petting zoo, rides, Miss Czech Feszt pageant, craft vendors, and a huge variety of food. Early in the morning, some of the best cooks in Texas will bring sam-

From the President’s Department State FAC: 100 Pennies Drive began October 1 Dear Members, October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. A great way to get into the spirit is to host a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food. Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in SPJST cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, the City of Temple and SPJST will again sponsor Czech Feszt in Temple on Saturday, October 31. The event will be held at Miller Park in North Temple. The location is expected to lend something of an Old World festival atmosphere to the event. Proceeds generated from Czech Feszt will benefit Temple’s Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. Performers highlighting the event will be Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five, Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six, and Brave Combo. Special guest entertainer will be the newly crowned Miss Texas Kristen Blair. Interesting to note, Kristen, who also placed first in the Miss Texas talent competition, is of Czech descent! What a wonderful coincidence! Please watch your Vestnik for additional details regarding the Miss Czech Feszt Pageant, car show, as well as special attractions, food booths, carnival rides, and games midway. Also, if you and your local lodge would like to get involved in the Temple Czech Feszt, please contact the Home Office and ask to speak with Tammy, Sandra or Brian in the Fraternal Department, or you can also give me a call.
Jourdanton Member Honored Congratulations to Sister Sandra Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton! The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) named 2008 SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year Sandra Hoggard as this year’s National Fraternal Congress of America Fraternalist of the Year at the NFCA’s annual meeting held in San Antonio, Texas, in September. What an awesome honor for a very special, talented, hard working, and deserving fraternalist. Annually, the program recognizes the nation’s top fraternalists among the 10 million members affiliated with NFCA’s 73 member-societies. Congratulations, again, Sandra, and
to all of the nation’s outstanding fraternalists whose names were submitted for this national honor. To these caring individuals and to all of you, who work to keep your SPJST lodges strong and active, keep up the excellent work!
100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 marks the start of the 2009-2010 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Since its inception in 1982, the scholarship program has presented SPJST scholars with near 1,780 scholarships valued at more than $1 million. That is a lot of pennies! Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues through March 31, 2010.
Fall Meetings Continue District Fall Fun Days continue in the months of October and November. Reports from districts who have already hosted the fall fun day are favorable. Please make plans to attend the event in your district on the following dates: District One—October 11 Hosted by Lodge 1, Fayetteville at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm District Three—October 25 Lodge 92, Fort Worth District Four—TBA District Six—October 25 Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje District Seven—November 15 Hosted by Lodge 185, New Braunfels
Has Your Lodge Turned In All Requested Paperwork? As of this writing, there are 36 lodges that have not turned in all paperwork that is due to date. Reports that should have been submitted to date are: • 2009 lodge roster • 990s and tax forms for 2008 tax year • Mid-Year Fraternal Report As you will recall, in 2008, the

Supreme Lodge voted to withhold any incentive money (including premium refund) due a lodge until all paperwork is received in the Home Office. In just a few months, the year-end report and fraternal services report will be due. Please do not deprive your lodge members any incentive money they have coming by not having all paperwork in the Home Office. If you need assistance in filing these reports, please call me (210) 413-3053 or Tammy at the Home Office so we may assist you. Make a Difference Day Make a Difference Day was created by USA Weekend Magazine and is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday in October. Anyone can participate from the young to the young-at-heart. This year, that date falls on October 24. SPJST is proud of its fraternal calling and encourages lodges to get involved in this nationally recognized event in your community. The Make a Difference Day website (http://www.usaweekend.com/ diffday/) will enable you to register your project and provide you with more complete information on Make a Difference Day, including projects from past years. If you have any questions or want to talk over an idea, please give me a call.
Looking Ahead What is your lodge planning in the coming weeks, months and years that will make a positive difference in the lives of your members and in the community? Good question! Even if your lodge is flying high, it’s good to conduct a periodic “fraternal flight check” and ask, “What is the role of my lodge in the community?” In other words, “What is our mission?” Answering this question is an important step in charting a meaningful game plan for your lodge. A lodge will continue to grow and prosper only as long as there remains a vital cause to stimulate it. The alternative - not having a clearly defined course of action - can lead to inactivity and demise. An active fraternal program will increase your organization’s visibility, promote unity, brotherhood, volunteerism, and ultimately, fraternalism. Whether your lodge is in a bustling city or in a rural community, your lodge can be the catalyst that brings people together and makes good things happen. Identify a project that needs attention and one to which your
Page 4
members can relate. There are lots of good causes: helping the aged, supporting law enforcement, encouraging healthy lifestyles or promoting your heritage and culture - to name a few. The choice is yours. Without question, there is strength in numbers. Attracting and keeping your members active must always be a priority. Maintaining a strong membership program is vital to the lodge’s continued existence. As a volunteer organization, your lodge has limited resources and manpower. As such, it is important to channel them to where they can do the most good. Consider the benefits of annually designating at least one meeting in the fall as an annual planning session for the purpose of reviewing the previous year’s activities and brainstorming. Take advantage of the opportunity to review and discuss lodge activities that were successful over the past year. What made them successful? Also, discuss activities that did not succeed and analyze the reasons why. An effective brainstorming session will enable you to identify your lodge’s strengths as well as its weaknesses: moreover, it will come up with ways to accentuate the positives and eliminate the negatives. Upon request, the Home Office will assist you in the brainstorming process. Please allow at least an hour. It will be time well spent.
Keep Up the Good Work Keep up the good work each of you have been doing in promoting SPJST, fraternalism, and your lodge. Be thinking at this time, who your lodge will be selecting as its Fraternalist of the Year for 2009. The honor is meant to recognize an individual for fraternal efforts contributed during the current calendar year. In turn, your lodge’s honoree will receive recognition at the district incentive banquet next spring. Also, be thinking who you want to lead your lodge forward in the coming year as officers. Election of officers is to be held during the months of November or December. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to call me at (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke@wmconnect.com. Or, contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575 or email tammym@spjst.com. Your District FAC is also available to assist you. They are as follows:

meal as we remember and celebrate our Czech heritage. If you have a favorite dish that your mother or grandmother used to make . . . why not try to make it? If you’re not up to trying your luck, you can bring the recipe to share with others . . . who knows — your “old family recipe” just might turn up at next year’s celebration! We all love recipes, and some of us really love to cook! Of course, not all of us were raised in a Czech family. I wasn’t — but I truly love the food and music (as well as everything else the Czech people stand for) and consider myself an honorary Czech because I am married to one! So don’t feel bad if you are not sure what to bring—any salad, vegetable or dessert goes with what is being served. And, I assure you that it will be enjoyed by all. ples of their kolaches to determine who makes the best. Later in the day, there will be a kolache eating contest, and there are already people lining up to participate. Also, RVOS is sponsoring a visit by Miss Texas, Kristen Blair, who is of Czech descent. A special attraction will be the E&B Fun Time Rides Carnival. The carnival will feature a wrist band special on Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. for $15. That will include all rides and as many times as you want to ride them with the wrist band. On Saturday during Czech Feszt, tickets will be $1 each or 22 tickets for $20. Because Czech Feszt is being held on Halloween, we haven’t forgotten the kids — or the young-at-heart. In addition to the return of many of last year’s activities, we are adding scarecrow building and a scarecrow patch to display the creations. We’d love for you to wear your Czech kroj, of course, but you can also come in your trick-ortreat outfit. A parade of Czech costumes is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. If you or your lodge would like to get in on this year’s Czech Feszt as a volunteer or vendor, Czech Feszt Co-

ordinator and Czech Heritage Museum Executive Director Sandi Wicker would love to sign you up. If you or your lodge has a food, game or sale booth idea that you’d like included at this year’s Czech Feszt, call Sandi at (254) 899-2935. If you’d like to volunteer — a few hours or a day — please contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at (800) 727-7578 and you’ll receive your assignment. This applies to youth club members, too! Everyone’s participation will be greatly appreciated! Since many will want to come early and stay all day, we strongly suggest that you bring a folding chair and maybe a blanket. As in the past, proceeds generated from the Temple Czech Feszt go to support the Czech Heritage Museum. Admission is $5 for adults. Boys and girls 12 and under are free of charge. Czech Feszt, which is sponsored in part by SPJST and the Parks and Leisure Services of the City of Temple, is an annual event to help support the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple. State Youth Director invites all to Czech Feszt
Dear Youth Leaders, The 2009-2010 State Royalty Court made its first public appearance at Westfest in West, Texas on Labor Day weekend. Westfest is a celebration of Czech heritage and culture held annually in the Central Texas town of West. The community is located approximately 15 miles north of Waco and 75 miles south of Dallas on Interstate 35. Royalty Court members rode in the parade, made an appearance at the Cultural Amphitheater and helped out with the SPJST Fine Art of Fraternalism booth. The following Saturday, the State Royalty traveled to Caldwell, Texas, for the annual Caldwell Kolache Festival where they made an appearance and assisted with the kolache eating contest sponsored by SPJST. have to say we have a tough group of State Royalty and their parents, since it rained the whole day. Due to the hard work of the State Royalty and their parents, we had the best and grandest competition we have ever had. The main stage was closed due to the rain so the competition was held inside at a local business. The whole place was jammed packed since not only the kolache eating contest was going on, but also the Shiner Hobo Band was playing inside at the same time. It turned out to be a great event, and it was good to finally see it rain.
Czech Feszt—October 31 in Temple Please mark your calendar to be in Temple on Saturday, October 31. The Czech Heritage Museum (formerly the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) is hosting a celebration of Czech heritage and culture on this date at Miller Park from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Many events and entertainment, including a carnival and midway, are being planned
throughout the day. Please refer to the Vestnik for details. Youth club members are encouraged to enter the Mr. and Miss Czech Feszt Pageant and photography contest. See the Vestnik for the complete event schedule. Booths are available to lodges and groups to raise funds with food and/or merchandise. There is limited space available, so please contact Sandi Wicker, Executive Director of the Czech Heritage Museum, (254) 899-2935 or the SPJST Home Office (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578 as soon as possible. Heritage ’09 Membership Drive Only three months to go in this year’s 2009 membership drive! There’s still time for youth club members to make new member referrals and have them count towards your club’s 2009 youth application quota! Youth clubs who meet their club goals are also in line to receive some nice cash incentives. Please take a look to see where your youth club stands in reaching its youth club goal for the Heritage ’09 Membership Drive. Please remember that the following things need to happen in order for any incentives to be awarded. First, 2009 applications have to be issued statewide into SPJST. Second, each youth club must meet requirements needed to qualify for youth program incentives. Your Old Eyeglasses Are Appreciated Please keep those old eyeglasses and hearing aid donations coming in. This remains an ongoing effort. Thanks to your efforts, SPJST has been able to help many people through this program. The eyeglasses and hearing aids that we collect are processed by the Houston Eye-

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Kicked Off October 1 The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive began October 1. All youth clubs members who donate $2 or more will receive two merit points. In the new point system, two points are very valuable. Youth club members who donate $5 or more will receive a certificate acknowledging their gift.
Make a Difference Day is October 24 Looking for an opportunity for your youth club to make a difference? Then take a look at Make a Difference Day. Texas Observes Czech Heritage Month
Ten years ago, in 1999, the 76th Texas Legislature
made Czech Heritage Month official. Czechs have contributed greatly to Texas history dating back to the arrival of writer Karel Postl, who may have visited Texas as early as 1823 and Frederick Lemsky, who came in 1836 and played the fife in the Texan band at the Battle of San Jacinto. The founding of the SPJST — and even our SPJST youth clubs — can be traced back to the arrival of these early Czechs in Texas.
On November 6, 1851, 74 men, women and children from the Czech villages around Nepomuky and Cermna set off for America, looking to make a better life for themselves. Conditions aboard the ship were so bad that only 38 members of the group reached Texas alive. Their first settlement was at Cat Spring in Austin County. The great majority of Czech immigrants to Texas were farmers. and the great majority of the 250 or so Czech settlements in Texas were organized in or near the fertile farming regions of the state.
The SPJST was organized by Texas pioneers of Czech descent in 1897 to provide for the financial security of their families and a sense of belonging to its members. Through participation in lodge meetings and SPJST conventions learned to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. They also learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted these American values, the SPJST members became better citizens.
One of the most significant fraternal developments in the SPJST over the past decade has been the increase in volunteerism and community service projects. In youth clubs and adult lodges all over the state, SPJST members are giving their time and energy to support wor-
thy causes and help those in need. They are taking the best that SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families and are extending it to their communities. October Vestnik Project After reading the story complete the word find. Happy Czech Heritage Month!

where to find a mop, but you did, and it was nice to have a dry floor behind the table at the country store. And, lastly, I want to thank Lauren Cloutman, Elisabeth Cowan, and my mother Anne. When the adult who was supposed to help me and Elisabeth had

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on September meeting
Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas held their monthly meeting on Sunday, September 13 before the start of Czechfest We had six youth and three adults there. After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, we recited the youth motto and held a moment of silence for the departed and those serving overseas. We then went through old business, new business, and the reading of any reports if there were any as well as dis-
cussing of our lodge tee-shirt design and ideas. It was a short meeting, but a lot was talked about. I want to send out a special shout out to CJ Novak, our lodge’s bartender and Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 84. As the fellowship hour was about to end, he made sure that my brother, mom and I each had a soda. We were all so busy with getting our apple cobbler to the bake shop, the cookies to the dessert table, placing our canned goods at the country store, getting those prize drawing tickets and the cash prize donation to JoAnn, and the meeting that we forgot all about the free drinks. He is such a thoughtful person to make sure we had a cold soda when we walked by the bar. Thanks again, CJ. I

When I Get Rich
Hello, and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s song is by the group Alkehol and is called “Až já budu bohatej” - when I get rich. The word to listen out for is prachy which is a frequently used slang expression for money – and the choice is no coincidence – what with the economic crisis and a looming record budget deficit next year money is the operative word in most conversations these days.
bankovky
Velký prachy jsem vždycky chtěl . . . I always wanted to make big money, but I have given up on that dream. What a life I could have had if I’d been born right-a grand villa, garden, and a fast car in the garage. How come I still don’t have them when I work like a dog? — the lyrics of the song go — a sentiment that many people are likely to share. If you hear someone called a pracháč then you are looking at a rich man. You can also say — ten je v balíku — meaning he’s loaded; je zazobanejj — he’s riding a gravy train; or ten může penězma vytapetovat byt — he has so much money he can use

it as wallpaper . . . unlike our singer here. Although you are likely to hear the word prachy everywhere, the proper expression for money is peníze, and there are various ways to say that someone has money to burn. You can say he has peněz jako babek as much money as he has babkas - babka being a type of mushroom which grows everywhere, or peněz jako smetí — as much money as garbage — in other words, a never ending supply. A difficult one to explain is peněz jako želez meaning someone has as much money as bits and pieces of iron around the house. This is an old saying based on the fact that in the old days, people relied on DIY (do-it-yourself) and had boxes of nails, screws, hammers and other iron things around the house. If you want to say a company is making big profits you say tam se prachy jen točí — money sure turns there . . . in other words, it circulates fast. People who are aspiring to be rich – like the singer in question — otočí každou korunu dvakrát — turn over every crown twice in their hand before reluctantly parting with it. They believe in the saying — co je doma, to se počítá — money that stays at home counts or — kdo šetří, má za tři — he who saves has enough for three . . . a saying that the Czech finance minister Eduard Janota, who is pushing an austerity package for 2010, would doubtless put his signature to. And that brings us to the end of today’s SoundCzech. This is Daniela Lazarová saying thanks for learning Czech with me and na shledanou! — Daniela Lazarová

Pope Benedict XVI visits Czech Republic
Submitted by Dr. Robert L. Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
The Czech Republic has been described as one of the least religious populations in all of Europe. According to the most recent Eurobarometer Poll in 2005, 19 percent of Czech citizens responded that “they believe there is a God” (the second lowest rate among European Union countries after Estonia with 16 percent), whereas 50 percent answered that “they believe there is some sort of spirit or life force,” and 30 percent said that “they do not believe there is any sort of spirit, God, or life force.” The Czech Republic was visited on September 26 to 28, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI, who observed that the long winter of communist dictatorship had left its scars and urged Czechs to reconsider a faith many have abandoned. His trip began on Saturday, September 26 in Prague, where he visited the Our Lady of Victory Church and met former president Vaclav Havel, hero of the 1989 coup who became president after spending years in communist prisons. “History has demonstrated the absurdities to which man descends when he excludes God from the horizon of his choices and actions,” the pope said in an open-air Sunday Mass in Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city and the center of Moravia. The 120,000 worshippers came from neighboring Slovakia, Poland, and Austria — all traditionally Catholic countries — to hear the pope. Celebrating the Mass with him were 40 bishops and some 1,000 priests, among them more than 200 from abroad. Benedict, who was welcomed by Bishop Vojtech Cikrle as the first pope to visit the Brno Diocese which dates

back to 1777, made reference during his homily to Sister Marie Restituta Kafkova, a Brno-born candidate for sainthood who was executed by the Nazis in 1943. Later Sunday, in talks with leaders of other faiths and branches of Christianity, Benedict broadened his message to all of Europe. During the meeting at Prague’s medieval Hradcany Castle, he observed that European ideas of justice, freedom, and social responsibility, along with the related cultural and legal institutions, are “shaped by her Christian inheritance.” Europe’s religious roots, he further stated, “supply the continent with the spiritual and moral sustenance that allows her to enter into meaningful dialogue with people from other cultures and religions.” The pope shook hands with Jewish leaders at that meeting. This gesture was significant in view of the fact that an estimated 80,000 Czech Jews perished in the Holocaust, which decimated the nation’s Jewish community. In a meeting with other Christians, he also mentioned Jan Hus, a 15th century religious reformer seen as a forerunner of the Protestant Reformation who was burned at the stake. Hus is considered a national hero in the Czech Republic. The pope said discussion of the case was important not only in the quest for Christian unity but also “for the good of all European society.” The pope’s visit ended on Monday, September 28 with a Mass at Stara Boleslave near Prague in observance of the Feast of Saint Wenceslas the Czech martyr and patron saint who was murdered in this town on September 28, 935. —SPJST—

Czech Folk Tales Translated by Josef Baudiš, 1917 Selected and translated by Dr. Josef Baudis, M.R.I.A., lecturer in comparative philology at the Prague university.
The Knight Bambus
here was a poor gamekeeper once, who had suffered from hard times all his life, so as he grew older, he wanted to get rich. He was only an under-forester. One day the forester said : “Near those old ruins, you know the ones I mean, a fox or a roe, or some creature of that sort, often crosses my path, and I can never manage to hit it, though I have shot at it a hundred times. If you happen to be going in that direction, look out for it.” When the gamekeeper heard this, the first thing he did was to go to the ruins. Just as he got there, a huge fox appeared with a rustling noise. The gamekeeper felt uneasy, but the fox disappeared at once, so he sat down, put five big charges in his gun, and waited. It wasn’t long till the fox appeared again, and this time he was carrying a young fawn in his mouth. The gamekeeper shot at him — boom! The fox cried out, and ran off into the bushes. But the gamekeeper saw that the fawn had run away and hidden itself in a cave. He thought: “The fox cried out, so he has some of my shots in his fur coat. I’ll get him some other time.” So he went into the ruins through the gate. Within, there was a courtyard all deserted, and with its wall fallen down. So the gamekeeper passed through the courtyard and came into a spacious cellar. There he saw three lamps burning, and looking round, he was filled with amazement. But all this was as nothing, for in the corner were three glittering heaps of golden
T
coins and one heap of big gold pieces. The gamekeeper reflected: “If I had all that, I should give up gamekeeping and have a splendid time.” No sooner had he said this than a grey old man appeared and asked: “What are you looking for, gamekeeper?” “Well, I shot at a fox and he ran in somewhere here, aind so I’m wandering about looking for him.” “You won’t get the fox you’re looking for, for I am he.” “And why are you here in a fox’s shape? What’s the reason of that?” “I am the Knight Bambus, and all these forests belong to this castle. I was a robber-knight, and so as a punishment I have to keep watch here now.” “And how long is it to last?” “When three poor people come here, and each of them takes away two sackfuls of gold, I shall be delivered. I am bound to give all this gold away for nothing. Already I have outlived three generations of my kinsmen here.” Then he bade him fetch two leather sacks from the other room and collect the gold into them, filling them up to the brim. He must keep it all for himself and must not tell any one what he had seen. The gamekeeper promised that he wouldn’t even tell his wife, Hátička, how he had got the money. So he filled the two sacks up to the brim, and the old man helped him to hoist them on to his shoulders and saw him out of the door. All the time he kept warning him to keep his mouth shut: “For what a woman knows all the world knows; that’s gospel truth, sure enough.”

So the gamekeeper left the castle, carrying those two sacks, and the man shook hands with him before he left. At the border of the forest, near a beech-tree, his wife, Háta, was standing looking for him. She ran up to him. “Great Heavens, Florian! where have you been all this long time? I have been looking everywhere for you for three days.” Now, Florian was delighted that his wife had come to meet him, so he blurted out: “Hátička, wife, Count Bambus has given me these two sacks of gold pieces. Have a look here — see what heaps of the stuff there are!” and he let one of the sacks fall on the ground. But behold! instead of gold there were only rustling leaves in it. Then he remembered that he was not to say anything about it.
