Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Czech Feszt this Saturday This Saturday, October 31 will be a day of Czech heritage celebra-

tion at Miller Park, located at 1919 North Third Street in Temple. The day will include fun for all ages— carnival, car show, music, dancing, food, arts/crafts, children’s activities, pig scramble, face painting, pageant, parade of Czech costumes, paintball, mechanical bull, genealogy, pony rides, scarecrow building, inflatables, demonstrations, lawnmower train rides, accordion jam, petting zoo . . . plus more. Come on out for a great time! See pages 21 and 24 for more info. Best Wishes, Jill Best wishes to Lodge 154, Fort Worth member Jill Parker who will be running in the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1. Jill is the daughter of Jerry and Donna Rose Parker and the granddaughter of Rose Steinman.

Benefit from the End of Daylight Saving Time Before going to bed on Saturday night, October 31, remember to set your clocks back an hour. You’ll get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday, November 1, if you get up at the usual time. An extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning won’t sound like a big benefit unless you are usually up early for church. The good news is that your body’s adjustment period will continue for several days afterward. The return to standard time can help you catch up if you haven’t been getting quite enough rest. It will feel good to turn over and go back to sleep when the clock tells you it’s an hour earlier than your body thought it was. One key to the benefit: Get to bed when the wall clock says you should, instead of staying up an hour longer.

Sincere Sympathy Heartfelt sympathy is extended to District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and his family. Bobby and wife Ruth Ann’s daughter Denisse Wuensche, 42, passed away October 19, 2009. Denisse, an active member of Lodge 48, Beyersville, is also survived by sisters Ginger McKay and Paula Kennedy and brothers John and Andy. Services were held Friday, October 23 in Taylor. It is with great sadness that this Vestnik includes the last report from Denisse, who served as Lodge 48, Beyersville reporter. Her spirit and passion for life and SPJST were unsurpassed. Her articles were always interesting and filled with wit Denisse style. We will miss her dearly.

Have a Little Faith: Volunteers in America Approximately 61.8 million Americans volunteered their time and services to help the less fortunate in 2008. Of those, almost 40 percent— 22.2 million—volunteer through their church or some other religious organization, says the Volunteering in America 2009 report. Volunteers donated about 8 billion hours of service in 2008, which added up to about $162 billion worth of effort. People who served through faithbased institutions were more likely to keep volunteering year after year—70 percent of them, according to the report. The state of Utah ranks at the top of the list of citizen volunteers, with 42.5 percent of its population donating their time and effort to community causes. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, Utah is followed by Nebraska, with 38.9 percent, Minnesota (38.4%), Alaska (38%), and Iowa (37.1%).

Readers Write

Vestnik reader comments on article

Dear Melanie, I just read with interest the whole Vestnik as I always do since my wife, Donna Rychlik, receives it each week. Anyway, in the Lodge 48, Beyersville article, Reporter Denisse Wuensche writes about ladies going to the bathroom two by two. Well, the true reason that ladies go two by two, is when the toilets were out back of the dance halls, etc., it usually was a bit dark and scary and instead of having a man along, the thought was to have another lady to be ready to scream if neces-

sary. I grew up in New Tabor and clearly remember the SPJST hall with the outdoor toilets in back. As a kid, when friends and I were picking soda and beer bottles for extra cash, I heard two ladies talking about “this sorry toilet has only rough paper and I hope I don’t have to go again tonight.” The things a kid remembers . . . and that was over 50 years ago. Keep up your interesting column, and we enjoy the paper (Vestnik, that is)! Joe J. Rychlik Caldwell, Texas —SPJST—

District Seven Director announces Jerry Elzner Memorial Fund

Dear Members and Friends, I would like to proudly announce the start up of a fund in late Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Jerry Elzner’s name. We would like to make a memorial donation to the Czech Heritage Jerry Elzner Museum in

Jerry’s memory with the permission of the family. I believe that we need to do something for Jerry. He has done so much for our Czech culture, our Czech heritage, and SPJST. It is now time that we do something for him so I am asking all of you out there to please contribute to this endeavor. I have talked with District Seven Czech Heritage Museum board member Roxy Bertrand. She said that the CHM is looking for an audio/visual system for the museum. She said the cost was around $10,000 so I am setting this as our goal.

Update As of October 23, we have collected $5,447. Very good! Thanks to those who have donated. Also, there

Texas Fraternal Congress meets in Corpus Christi, elects new leadership

Life was hard at the turn of the century, but the uniting in 1900 of a group of fraternal life insurance societies positively impacted the lives of thousands of Texans. Called the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC), this group united the fraternal benefit societies that provided life insurance protection and fellowship to Czech, German, and Catholic immigrants and their families. More than 100 years later, Texas Fraternal Congress continues to bene-

fit Texans and their families. The Congress held its 109th annual meeting October 2 and 3, 2009, at the Omni Marina Hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas. Representatives from 10 fraternal benefit societies that still make a difference in the lives of nearly 500,000 Texans took part in the meeting. Besides educational speakers, attendees reviewed the many activities that the Congress undertakes each year. This year, the Congress sponsored a bowling tournament and a day

at the State Capitol. Additionally, giant thank you cards signed by over 1,200 people were presented to residents of Texas’ veterans homes. At the business session, Loretta Stahl of Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (KJZT) was elected to serve as president of the organization for 20092010. Other elected officers include Ramon Ramos, Knights of Columbus, First Vice President; David Wagner, The Catholic Union of Texas (KJT), Second Vice President; Sarah Martin,

Ennis Sewing Circle

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on October 8, 2009. The quilters arrived at 8 a.m. We stretched Joyce Ehrenberger’s quilt top, made by her grandmother Nancy Jane Parker before she passed away in 1954. We arranged table and chairs. Ann Clagett decorated the officers’ table in the Halloween theme. It really looked pretty. Thank you, Ann. Thank you to all our faithful quil-

ters Martha, Eleanora, Dorothy K., Dorothy P., Bessie, Ann, and Irene. We quilted until lunch time. By that time, everyone else had arrived. Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. I must say that Martha brought a very good taco soup which was enjoyed by all. It was all eaten—not even a cup was left over for her evening meal. After lunch, the quilters returned to quilting, and President Sadie called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for Austin Zabojnik,

grandson of Anne Zabojnik and nephew of Marie Vrla. We had 17 members and one guest Joe Ehrenberger. Dorothy J. Kudrna read the minutes of our last meeting, Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Lodge 48, Beyersville hosts successful annual fundraiser

The annual Lodge 48, Beyersville fundraiser was held on September 12, 2009. We held our breath right up to the last minute. You see, once again, it rained cats and dogs on our day. But, due to all the excitement that we finally got some rain, we had one of the biggest and best crowds ever! We also had some of the best auction items ever. We had several members who really got out there and acquired these items. We had some wonderful, fresh pastries donated as well as canned items and the perennial favorite, Margie’s brittle. I missed being there so I did not get to bid on it. The crowd was treated to the mouthwatering brisket of John Wuensche and company, including Jesse Pospisil of Lodge 29, Taylor, Michael Urbanek, Larry Tieman, Larry Beran, Brandon Lopez, and, of course, the pit bosses— Trent and Trevor Wuensche. The sides

were catered by Red Oman and gave the brisket a run for its money. After the meal, the fun really started. The crowd was warmed up by auctioneer Harvey Johnson. There were a lot of members and friends who jumped in and helped here, including but not limited to Tammy Friar, Bonnie Wolf, Jerry Turek, Michael Urbanek, Rita Kelm, Bret Bachmayer, and Jimmy Turek. Some of the hot items included a Texas A&M autographed football and a UT autographed football. Gift cards for $50 were given to every 10th ticket drawn out and finally, around midnight, the finalists were announced. It was fun to see all the people who won our prizes. They were: 1st - go cart - Cody Leshikar 2nd - flat screen television Tammy Laake

3rd - fishing trip to Port O’Connor Al Wendland 4th - 36-inch barbecue pit Joey Voigt 5th - casino trip to Marksville, Louisiana for 10 people - Norman Fussell

Bonnie Urbanek took the reins on the silent auction, and with help from her family, she neatly wrapped it up. Donna Mahac put together the spa package for the ladies, and Anissa Lopez sold the deck of cards for this drawing. Donna M. also served food and worked in the kitchen. Donna Vanecek purchased all of the gift cards, and she was on her feet most of the night helping serve food, cutting and serving desserts. Juanette Susan was all over the place as well, serving food and refilling sides. Alice Bracewell and Margie were the tea stewards. Sid

Srnensky and Wayne Kelm worked in the bar area. Bobby Wuensche helped ensure that we had beer stocked up, ice where needed, and helped keep an eye on the serving lines. Larry Beran pitched in wherever needed. Rita Kelm worked at the front door again. Robert and Bonnie Leshikar floated as well making sure that the evening ran smoothly. If I missed anyone, I truly apologize. I was home sick from the radiation and depended on pictures and word of mouth. I want to thank Sherry Wuensche for taking pictures for me. Unfortunately, I did not charge my camera, so you know what happened. But, she was still able to get some good pictures! Fraternally, Denisse Wuensche Reporter —SPJST—

and Emil Martinek and 71 other Ennis people to Key West, Florida, Freeport, Bahamas and Nassau, Bahamas, on the Carnival Conquest. It was a polka cruise. All had a wonderful time. Martha Ritchey told of the Alaskan cruise that she took with her son Mike and his wife Judi on the Coral Princess. They flew to Seattle, Washington, then to Anchorage, Alaska. There they boarded a bus to Whittier, Alaska. As they got off the bus, there was a group of excited people and guess who it was? The former Governor Sarah Palin. There was lots of picture taking. Martha got one of her daughter-in-law Judi with Sarah Palin. The road to Whittier was beautful. The trees were changing color. When approaching Whittier, they had to go through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a single lane, two and a half-mile tunnel shared by a railroad. This tunnel was used during World War II for military use. After boarding the ship, they cruised in College Fjord and overnight to Glacier Bay. The Gulf of Alaska was having a winter storm, and they experienced seven to 12 foot swells. It was a very rough trip. This same storm brought Ennis its first cool spell. Glacier Bay had many

Page 12

glaciers and were lovely to look at. They sailed to Skagway and took a train over the White Pass and British Columbia. They were not allowed to get off. They just flipped the back of the seats over, and they were turned around. The narration of how the railroad was built was very interesting. Many lives and animals were lost due to the harsh weather and working conditions—all for gold in the Klondike. In Juneau, they took a whale-watching cruise and saw many whales and a small island covered with Steller seals. After leaving Juneau for Ketchikan, their last stop on the cruise, Martha and Judi took a float plane ride into Misty Fjord. They landed in the water and were allowed to walk on the pontoons. Son Mike took a motorcycle tour with the shop owner and for other people of Ketchikan and all the back roads. They passed an eagle’s nest which was huge. In each port that they stopped, they walked the streets and shopped the stores. It was all very quaint, charming and very clean. They sailed to Vancouver, British Columbia, a very large city, that will be hosting the next winter Olympics. In Vancouver, they passed a service station that advertised gas for $1.01. They all

thought how cheap. The bus driver said that was $1.01 per liter. In Vancouver, they boarded a bus to the airport in Seattle, Washington, then went on to DFW and reality. It sounds like they truly had a wonderful time. I want to mention that Pete and I attended our 58th class reunion here in Ennis. We met at a restaurant, visited and had lunch. It was just perfect. Everyone enjoyed themselves and said that it was our best ever. I want to thank Carol Hejny for getting it all together. She does a great job. The next meeting will be November 12. Stay well, everyone. We will quilt, have a covered dish, lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. See you! Georgie Morales Reporter —SPJST—

President Mary Ann Krivanek welcomed everyone, called the meeting to order, and thanked Joe Kozel for the great music. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all then Vice President Betty Krenek read a prayer. Due to Secretary Faith Lindeau having a scratchy throat, the minutes from the last meeting were read by President Mary Ann, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as presented.

Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported that she sent a get well card to Paula Arsenault, and she thanked Kitty Rippen for the donation of a box of cards. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to October celebrants Alice Barnes, Sharron Connelly, Ima Lou Crider, Mary Schneider, and Mary Windham. May all of you have many more. We were sorry to hear that Alice Barnes is back in the hospital. Our prayers are with you, Alice. We missed you. It was further reported that Monalee Hattendorf had been in the hospital, and she was missed at the meeting along with Tracy Horn and Virgie Valentine who are on the sick list. Get well wishes go out to all of you. President Mary Ann stated hostesses for November will be Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and Rose Ann Spann. Hostesses for October— Ann Conner, Ella Greer, and Wilma Stell—were thanked. The Halloween theme was carried out on all tables. Ladies, it was a job well done! President Mary Ann further announced that November is the designated month in which we bring items for the St. Thomas Food Pantry. Also, she asked that members bring their craft or food items for a craft/food sale. The Thanksgiving dinner was discussed, and the president volunteered to bake the turkey and make the dressing and gravy. Since it is getting to be election time again, Debbie Skrasek was ap-

Door prizes were donated by Elsie Anders, Paula Arsenault, Mary Ann Kozel, and Debbie Skrasek. Lucky winners were Harold Balvin, Betty Landsfeld, Debbie Skrasek, and Mary Windham. Darlene Tompkins and Libbie Vrla were the winners of the 50/50 dollar game. This was my first time to win, and it was so nice to get all those dollar bills! Following the meeting, grace was said, a delicious fried chicken lunch was enjoyed, then games were played. A good time was had by all. News On September 27, Debbie Skrasek and husband Gary, and Helen Skrasek attended Helen’s sister Adele (Janak) and Harold Strand’s 10th wedding anniversary at the community center in Crawford, Texas. Approximately 200 friends and family enjoyed the music of Charlie Nemec, the food, and fellowship. The following weekend, Helen, Debbie, and Gary made a trip to Round Top to visit Helen’s nephew Larry Janak and his wife Rhonda. The Janaks have a lovely country home there and are furnishing it with antiques. It just happened that there was an antique show going on so they got to do a lot of browsing. Helen said that it rained off and on the whole weekend, but as Larry said, “we need the rain” and that “his pond needs filling

Lydia Alholm enjoyed the recent visit from grandson Matt Alholm, his wife Julie, and great-grandchildren Ellie and Anthony along with daughter-in-law Kathy Alholm from the Chicago area. It seems Matt and Julie came to attend a function in Dallas so Kathy came to babysit. R.L. treated the group along with friends Freddie and Ricky Volliger and their wives to lunch on Saturday and Sunday evening dinner at their favorite same Mexican restaurant. I understand even aunt Frances Matthews joined in! Lydia really enjoyed the visit with Kathy, Matt, and family. Rose Steinman, Carrie Milan, and Mary Steinman attended the ribbon cutting and dedication of the library/museum at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. I hear that Rosie wore her Czech costume and was even invited to sing with the Czech choir. All had a good time. Several of our members enjoyed attending Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92, Fort Worth the other Saturday. It is always so nice to see friends and listen to good music. Anna Johnson enjoyed the lunch visit on Saturday with granddaughter Melissa Janak and her three daughters from Round Rock and granddaughter Nicole and her two sons from Azle. Get well soon, and our prayers are with you for a complete recovery. and at Kennebunkport, we saw Walker’s Point, the summer home of President George and Barbara Bush then on up to Bar Harbor. Here, we enjoyed a nature cruise, didn’t see any whales, but did see seals and lots of bald eagles. We enjoyed a nature hike in the Acadia National Park. From there, we went inland into New Hampshire, rode the gondola to the top of Wildcat Mountain. The leaves on the maple, birch, and sumac trees were beautiful. It was so interesting to travel through these quaint villages

with farm houses and with so many trees. We visited the Billings Farm and Museum then we went on to tour Fort Ticonderoga located on Lake Champlain in New York state. Then it was on to Lake Placid where we toured the 1980 Winter Olympic area. The awards podium was still there so we had a photo taken as a first-place winner (don’t I wish). The trees were at their peak, and the autumn colors were as beautiful as the pictures always show. We cruised on Lake Placid to see all the summer homes which are not small cottages, but huge homes with three or four boat stalls with the colorful trees in the background. After leaving Lake Placid, we stopped in Albany, the capital, then went on to Springfield where we toured Norman Rockwell Museum. On the last day of our trip, we stopped in Lexington and Concord, the heart of the Revolutionary War history where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired. We took our group picture on the Concord bridge; saw the Minuteman Statue and Lexington Green before heading back to Boston where we had a tour of Boston and another history lesson from our tour guide. We had a great time, and the scenery was fabulous. We saw lots of lighthouses, learned lots of history, stayed busy visiting and shopping in tiny villages, and enjoyed all the seafood - the best being lobster. We had the “whole” lobster on our plate, were given bibs, and instructions and a nut cracker. It was fun and delicious!

It was decided that we would donate to the volleyball court, and our youth club will also be a platinum contributor. We are all very excited and cannot wait until camp this coming summer to see our names on the plaque. Everyone who comes to the volleyball courts will know who donated the money to build it! My dad is a representative for SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm. He came down Peanut Festival weekend to spend time with us. While he was here, our youth club gave him two checks: one for the volleyball courts and the other for general use. He said on behalf of SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm, thank you for the donations! Peanut brittle-making weekend came and went. My brother and I did not make it because he was sick. He was in bed all weekend long; luckily, it was just allergies. Peanut Festival was a couple of weekends ago. We were so excited: dad was coming home and the weather was awesome! We had so much fun. We rode the carnival rides; watched the gun shoot-out show; ate food; and played with our friends.

Happy birthday, Dad! I hope everyone has a safe Halloween! Fraternally, Brooke Henke, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 107 Floresville youth visit SPJST ENC

Dear Vestnik Readers, My dad was home for Peanut Festival, and on Sunday, he had a meeting at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm. He asked us if we wanted to go . . . anything to spend time with him. My sister and I were excited to see the new camp. Although it was rainy and cold, we still had a great time. Dad showed us around by using the golf cart; that was a Checking out blast. everything was laid out in stages. I bet there are some awesome fish waiting to be caught. On our journey, the rain started and the wind was blowing; we were cold. We parked the golf cart in the garage and went inside. Build a scarecrow

It’s too late to celebrate Build a Scarecrow Day. That was July 5, but it was for gardeners and farmers. That was also Workaholic’s Day, so building a scarecrow gave those folks a break. Your fall scarecrow will be more festive. You can dress it in whatever outfit you like from formal on down, because it doesn’t have to scare birds away. It can stand, sit, or lean, and it will be part of your Halloween and Thanksgiving decor. Decide if your work of art will be stuck into the ground or tied to a fence, drainpipe or whatever. If it goes into the ground, the main pole will be longer. Cut a 10-foot stake or piece of bamboo into two pieces, one 6-foot piece (shorter if it won't go into the ground) and the other 3 or 4 feet long. Place the smaller section across the 6foot piece about 1 foot down from the top. Secure with wire or twine. Put a shirt on the crosspiece and button it. Stuff it loosely with hay, dry leaves or rags. Secure the stuffed gloves to the ends of the arms with a rubber band. Some people tie another small section onto the long stake to make a waist for the pants. Others just tuck in the stuffed shirt and secure the pants to the main stake with rope or twine. Pull one leg of a pair of trousers onto the stake. The other leg hangs freely. (You could bend it at the “knee” to rest on a bale of hay or planter.) Stuff the pants with the same material as the shirt. Make a head for your scarecrow by stuffing a pillowcase and using marker pens to make the face or gluing on buttons for the eyes. Make the mouth from yarn. Tie the opening onto the stake with a rope. Add a hat for more interest. —SPJST—

In Memoriam

In Memory of Jack Gartner

Funeral services for John R. “Jack” Gartner, 83, of Lufkin were held Saturday, October 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Father Joe Kannampuzha officiating. Graveside services with military Jack Gartner honors followed in the Whitehouse Cemetery. Mr. Gartner was born August 4, 1926, on a farm in Burke, South Dakota, to the late Mable (Smith) and Raymond Gartner, and went to be with his Lord Wednesday, October 14, 2009, in a local nursing home. He will be remembered to most people in Lufkin as being a mover and shaker, wearing his red suspenders, and loving to play blackjack. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin. Mr. Gartner attended school in St. Charles, South Dakota. He married Frances Lubber from Burke, South Dakota, in 1948. They had one son Robert “Bob” Daniel. After moving to Houston, Texas, in 1952 they adopted a baby girl Melanie Susan. Following a few odd jobs, Mr. Gartner was drafted in to the United States Army in 1954. He and Peggy Clowers met in 1995, were married October 13, 1997, and remarried in the Catholic church on March 25, 2008. Peggy was a big help to Jack by helping him host the Gartner family reunion in 1999. ~ Sound Czech ~

Hello and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech – Radio Prague’s Czech language series in which you can learn idioms through song lyrics. I guess it’s high time to check out a few idioms connected with the wintertime. We’ll be listening to a song with a very fitting title indeed – “Zima” — “Winter”.

As the singer wanders the streets, waiting to meet his love, an icicle or rampouch forms on his nose and the tears in his eyes turn into ice drops. If she doesn’t come soon, he himself might soon be zmrzlý jako rampouch — frozen as an icicle. We also use the phrase zmrzlý až na kost, which is an equivalent of the English phrase “cold to the bones.” And, I am afraid that is all we have time for today. Thank you for listening and na shledanou in some warmer season. — Ruth Fraňková

Autumn in the Czech Republic

In the first two lines of the song, the singer Jiří Schelinger explains that Madam Winter or paní Zima has arrived a bit earlier this year, with jíní or frost in her hair and sníh or snow under her feet. As a result, everybody starts to feel really cold. Note that Czechs use the same word for winter and for being cold. “Je mi zima” means I am cold, whereas “je zima” means it is winter. In the lyrics, the singer continues with his description of the freezing weather. It is so cold, he says, that frost gets behind his nails – mráz za nehty leze, and it chills — zebe — even though he is wearing five sweaters. Another common way of expressing that it is freezing cold is the idiom mrzne až praští. It means that the weather is so cold that everything feels like cracking. There is also a phrase je zima jako v Rusku which simply means it is as cold as in Russia.

We usually tell you about the October cool nights and the warm Moravian sun (Babi Leto) here in the wine country. Arrival on October 3 on Austrian Air via Air Canada was precisely that, as we arrived into Valtice during its Wine Harvest festival, but only for four days. Temperature plummeted from 25°C (their one really “hot” day about 78°F) to 2°C (34°F) next morning and tons of snow in the upper reaches all over central Europe. A gigantic direct Arctic cold front moved in with 60 to 70 mph winds for five days and nights downing trees, closing roads. Luckily, we survived without any major damage. We have experienced Mistral winds in Europe but this one was historically significant apparently causing so much tree and transit damage because of the heavy ice and snow. It has caused much disruption; fortunately for us, we could stay snug close to home enjoying our Fiorelle heat pump (and air) installed three years ago thinking we would never use it. Well, we have!

Uppermost important is the wine harvest hasn’t been damaged, just delayed; this year’s production smaller than last year’s but grape quality finer; natural sugar content greater than any in history of those who should know so that surely means more gold and silver medals in the international wine competitions. Of great interest is a

new grape harvesting combine, the French made Gregoire, a huge yellow monster that glides over the vineyard rows at one time picking the grapes on both sides, leaving the leaves and branches intact even lifts to drive over the tallest of row vine endposts. are only two at present in the Czech Republic. The machine costs 5.5 million Koruna (about $350,000). In one partial day, it does the work of 15 grape pickers production in three days. Young Jarda Slichta says it will have paid for itself in five years. Last week before the Arctic storm hit, there was an invitation to see its only exhibit in nearby Rakvice with visitors from various countries. Rakvice has a rich history first noted in 1248 when Count Oldrich Kortutansky gifted a part of his Cejkovice Templar for it. It is covered with wine cellars originating in the 1600s, known for its wine industry and Dyje River lake fish and bird preserves. We visited with an Iowa native, then Texan and for the last five years Czech, English teacher John Kuba or Jan of Podivin (member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio), we call him. Podivin is one of Moravia’s oldest places written about in Kosmos’ Chronicles in 1067 as Castle Podivin. It was known for its freedom to the Hussites, Brethren, Catholics, Evangelicals, Baptists, Habans and a large Jewish community. It is known as a town of fishermen, vintners, fruit growers, musicians and theatre actors who also claim the Moravian Dyje River as their own. Fascinating for us is a tall, white, elegant, four-sided tower with medieval red turrets emanating from the church seen from most village vistas of the area. Because of the inclement weather, we prefer to stay close for church on Sundays. Of course, our village church service is 8 a.m. and that is too early when you are on holiday so we choose 11 a.m. at Lednice, three kilometers away – the Castle’s Church. Earliest knowledge of Lednice is from 1222 when it was called the Latinized Izguobi and until the year 1945, Eisgrub (German) translating to the Czech, Lednice. Within a hundred years, the royal family of Liechtensteins came forth and served here over 600 years. They turned the Chateau into a Noveau Gothic pearl with a

beautiful complex park system with forest beauty to enjoy and explore adding the classical monuments (follies to them) of a Minaret, the Aquaducts, a faux cave, a large glass garden Atrium since 1900. The Lednice and Valtice Chateau’s panorama were joined being their winter and summer homes and other romantic monuments were built such as the Apollon, Three Graces, Novy Dvur (Horse Courtyard), the Rendezvous (Diana’s Shrine), Chateau Belvedere, the Border Chateau, Janohrad, (hrad = castle; zamek or zamecek = Chateau) and an Obelisk. These interesting Liechtenstein family holdings were established the Lednice – Valtice Areal into the World’s Cultural Heritage of UNESCO on December 7, 1996. The area annually brings thousands of visitors to just this corner of south Moravia, a virtual artist’s palette. This week, we visited the Breclav Museum adjacent to the towns restored beautiful Synagogue (used during communist time as a warehouse) to find that the youngest Prince of the Austrian and Moravian Liechtenstein family had officially dedicated the Museum to the City of Breclav in May 2009 as Liechtensteinsky Dum. There’s much more to know and enjoy about this area, but we wish to note this special time of year, The Autumn of Change. It all began in Poland in June 1989. People who dared to oppose communism, Solidarity, made the impossible, possible. Numerous communist countries followed. The Berlin Wall came down and East Germans in October ’89 had a break and came to the one place they could travel – Czechoslovakia. Hundreds of Trabant autos packed the roads to Prague, overwhelming the West German Embassy and leaving their cars where they stood, escaped to their German families and friends and elsewhere. Those Trabants for whoever claimed one eventually became collector’s items. It changed everything, this Autumn of Change in 1989. November 17 1989,
