Feszt Success: Czech

A Veteran

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard, or Reserve -

is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America,” for an amount of “up to and including my life.”

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. —Author Unknown

World War II Veteran Evan Barta of Lodge 202, Jourdanton proudly presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance at the November meeting. FAC Mary Ann Barta read the above poem honoring all veterans.

VӖSTNÍK

Unselfish Ser vice to America Our hearts and prayers go out to our neighbors and friends in Fort Hood fol-

lowing the November 5 tragedy.

A Prayer for Veterans On Wednesday, November 11, while we continue to lean strongly on our military forces, we celebrate Veterans Day. While Memorial Day is reserved to honor those who have died fighting, America now honors all Service members, past and present, living and dead, on Veterans Day. Proud of our nation they answered her call— Defending the freedom and safety of all On land or on sea, or in jets high above, They went out of duty and honor and love But however they served, Lord whereever they went, Please bless them and help them to know what it meant! And help us to thank them on Veterans Day — For we owe them far more than we ever could say.

Holiday Mail for Heroes In this season of hope and giving, the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. have joined forces again to invite the public to “send a touch of home” to United States service members and veterans across the country and abroad through the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. Now in its third year, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program provides Americans with the opportunity to extend holiday greetings and thanks to service members and veterans. Last year, the program received more than 1.4 million cards for military men and women, their families and veterans. The public can participate in the campaign by sending holiday cards

with personal messages to a special post office box from Monday, November 2 through Monday, December 7. The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards, and deliver them to military bases and hospitals, veteran’s hospitals and other locations in the U.S. and abroad during the holidays. Pitney Bowes is providing all screening, packaging and shipping at no charge, as well as providing thousands of volunteer hours around the country. The Red Cross will utilize volunteers at over 300 participating chapters nationwide to sort and deliver greetings to military and veteran’s hospitals and military bases in November and December. “The United States currently has 1.4 million active duty members, reservists and guards serving within our borders and abroad. Additionally more than 24 million veterans have faithfully served our country in the past,” notes Sherri Brown, Sr. Vice President of Service to the Armed Forces at the American Red Cross. “With increased chapter participation this year we hope to reach many more service members and veterans who may be spending this holiday season away from home or without loved ones,” says Brown. Holiday cards should be addressed and sent to: Holiday Mail for Heroes P.O. Box 5456 Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456.

Please be sure to affix adequate postage. Cards must be received no later than December 7. Cards received after this date will be returned to senders. For reasons of processing and safety, participants are asked to refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any inserts with the cards. For more information and card requirements, please visit www.redcross.org/holidaymail. —SPJST—

District Three: a big THANK YOU, members

As president of District Three, I want to thank all District Three members who participated in District Three Fun Day and fundraiser for Katelyn Daniel. We had a lot of fun and were able to raise almost $4,000 to help pay medical expenses. We had 20 prize baskets furnished by District Three lodges. Once again, the membership of District Three demonstrated what is true fraternalism. The bingo was fun, and we had plenty to eat. The fraternalism demonstrated by the membership of District Three once more shows what a great group of people the members of District Three are. The estimated repair costs for roof, plumbing, and septic and redoing ceilings/sheetrock were discussed. Susan read information about a 0 percent 10-year $10,000 SPJST loan which we would repay at about $100/month for 10 years. Youth Leader Mabrey Dowell gave

Lodge 47, Seaton elects 2010 officers

Dear Vestnik Readers It was a beautiful November day when 29 members met for the monthly Sunday meeting at Lodge 47, Seaton. President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 1 p.m. The flags were presented by youth members Jerry Pechal and Chris Zavodny who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We were very blessed to have no departed members in the past month. We did stand for a moment of silence for departed friend Denisse Wuensche. Denisse was such a beautiful and well loved person. The friendship and love she showed to so many was very obvious from the number of people attending her visitation and funeral service. I’m sure many of you enjoyed reading her fun letters in the Vestnik as Lodge 48, Beyersville reporter. Denisse will be missed by many. Please keep her parents, District Two Director Bobby and Ruth Ann Wuensche and her entire family in your prayers. Members recently recovering from surgeries or in the hospital are Nelda Marek, Ruth Janacek, Calvin Skrabanek, Ginger Ringwald, Irene Pagel, Ralph Kohutek, and Henry Janacek. It was so good to see Nelda, Ruth and Calvin at today’s meeting. Pam Morris will be having surgery this week. We wish all these members a speedy recovery and hope you are all as good as new soon. Roll call of officers, board members, and active sales agents showed all present except Parliamentarian Beth Rabroker and board member Crystal Morris. Secretary Patsy Koslovsky read the

October minutes. A thank you note was read from the family of Denisse Wuensche. We are honored to have three new members join our lodge. They are Wallace R. Reese, Mariana Rose Gibson, and Anna Marie Mokry. We welcome each of you and invite you to come and join us at our meetings and other functions within our lodge. Tammy Pechal read the unofficial board minutes. President Pechal thanked David Pechal and Woodrow Marek for painting the bathroom. Vice President/FAC Frank Klinkovsky stated that Czech Feszt had a good turnout. It was such a beautiful day to be outdoors, and everyone attending seemed to have a good time visiting and taking part in all the activities. The SPJST Home Office will sponsor an open house on Monday, December 7 following the Temple Christmas parade. This event is always so nice. The Home Office always puts so much into this event. Thank you, SPJST Home Office, for doing this for our members and the city of Temple and surrounding areas. November 11 is Veterans Day. Please remember all our service men and ladies. We are so honored that we had eight servicemen with us today. These gentleman were asked to stand and be recognized: Leroy Dana, Frank Klinkovsky, Willie Kohutek, Edwin Marek, Woodrow Marek, Edward Mares, Otis Meir, and Edwin Vasicek. Thank you for serving our country. Patsy Koslovsky stated she was so proud of the many youth who participated at Czech Feszt. Two groups of District Two Beseda Dancers performed. There were three teens who had only one hour of learning and prac-

ticing before performing on Saturday. Two were Seaton members—Candace Stone and Jason Pietrowski. The other member was Liz Tischler of Granger. Seaton youth participating in the pageant were Zoe Edwards, Abbey Mitchan, Bayley Mitchan, Angelina Ringwald, and Emma Regan. The young ladies looked outstanding in their Czech costumes. Czech Feszt crowned Little Miss Abby Mitchan and Junior Miss Bayley Mitchan. Congratulations also to Julia Zavodny on her first place prize winning kolaches. Jason Pietrowski is also to be congratulated on tackling the pig in the pig scramble. We are so proud of all our youth. Treasurer Amanda Greger gave the treasurer’s report. Also giving reports were bar chairman David Pechal, ticket chairperson Ruth Kohutek, and kitchen chairperson Lynette Talasek. Woodrow Marek gave the third quarter audit report. Entertainment chairman Edwin Pechal gave a report on the upcoming November events to be held at the hall. They are: November 7—Plum Country Dance November 14—Jerry Haisler Dance Tractor Meeting/Tractor Pull November 21—Wedding November 28—Quinceanera

The lodge members voted to give a donation to the Temple Fire and Rescue Elf’s this holiday season. This is a very worthy cause to help those who are less fortunate than us. Youth Leader Lynette Talasek gave the youth report. There were 14 members present today. She explained that the booth at Czech Feszt did not do near as good as they had hoped. She once again thanked the lodge for its

support, and all the youth and parents who helped out during the day. The carving and painting of the pumpkins was a great success. They were donated to three local nursing homes which were so excited to get them and use for decorations. The youth will begin to practice on their Christmas skit which sounds so neat. The election of 2010 officers and board members was held. They are: President Edwin Pechal Vice President/FAC Frank Klinkovsky Secretary/Reporter Patsy Koslovsky Treasurer David Pechal Parliamentarian James Skrabanek Youth Leader Lynette Talasek Board Members Woodrow Marek, Lucy Mihatsch Tammy Pechal, Calvin Skrabanek James Skrabanek, LaVerne Vanicek and Edwin Vasicek

Congratulations to the newly elected officers and board members. Members, please remember, your input is very important. It takes all members to keep a lodge running smoothly and to be successful. We need your help, ideas, and support. We want to congratulate James Skrabanek as Lodge 47 Fraternalist of the Year for 2009. James is very well deserving of this award. He puts in many hours and days of work for our lodge in so many different aspects. Thank you, James, for all you do, and we wish you the best on being the SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year. Christmas is just around the corner, and plans are under way for our lodge Christmas party. Preparation for the party will be on Friday, December 11

Following the refreshments and fellowship, a meal will be served. The lodge will provide turkey, ham, dressing, and green beans. Those attending are asked to bring a side dish and a dessert. Each year, our Christmas party is so nice. It is good to see so many members join in on the fun. Hope you will make plans to attend. Saturday, October 31, 2009 • Miller Park in Temple • Benefitting Czech Heritage Museum (CHMGC)

I want to thank so many people for

all of their efforts to make the Third Annual Czech Feszt at Miller Park in Temple a success. Ominous weather seemed to threaten the event earlier in the week, but God gave us a beautiful, perfect day for the festival. First, I want to express my gratitude to those who shared my faith that we would not be rained out.

SPJST sponsored three wonderful bands: Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six; Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five; and Brave Combo. The music was incredible. In between music sets, youth beseda dancers from District One and District Two entertained the crowds. Thank you, SPJST, for your continued support. We could not do it without you. This year, the committee of about 15 people worked diligently to plan very special events for the day. David and Melanie Zavodny Nauert organized a great car show, sponsored by American Bank of Texas and SPJST. We had over 90 spiffed up, classic cars on display. With awards in 32 different classes, most participants went home with prizes. And, Melanie and Katherine Morris organized the Miss Czech Feszt pageant. One of the exciting features of the pageant this year was a performance by Kristen Blair, Miss Texas 2009, who was sponsored for the event by RVOS. Thanks to these wonderful people for making Czech Feszt special.

There was an effort this year to provide more activities for the children. Hundreds of children were in attendance and seemed to be having a ball! Besides the wonderful playground at the park, John Hoelscher and his crew

revived the pig scramble this year. If you haven’t watched over 30 excited kids try to grab the ribbon off of a squirmy pig, you haven’t lived. Brian and Joan Vanicek and Sam and Stephanie helped families build their own scarecrows in the Scarecrow Patch. At the end of the day, the display was so cool. Larry and Dorothy Pflughaupt transported youth around the festival in a lawnmower train. Activities also included a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting by Una Forgy, inflatables, and much more. Later in the day, kolache lovers had the opportunity to display their eating skills in the Kolache Eating Contest. What fun! I would also like to thank Jesse and Linda Pospisil for the great job on the Kolache Baking Contest.

One of the goals for this year was to have demonstrations of heritage crafts. Sandra Dubcak worked diligently to line up Marilyn Ritchie to do pottery. Attendees also had a chance to sign a large pot that Marilyn is making for the museum. Other demonstrators included Joe Musil making sauerkraut and giving samples of three different flavors to everyone and the Bell County Extension Education Association demonstrating several different needlework methods. We had great food and great vendors, but a special day like this cannot happen without the efforts of the people who give their time to help out. We are so grateful to the many volunteers who came out to work for an hour or all day. We are also thankful to the City of Temple and Mayor Bill Jones for their support for all three years of the festival. I hesitate to mention everyone who volunteered because I don’t want to miss anyone—but know that each of you are very special friends to me. Don Mears, you were what made everything work. Thank you. he pig scramble was a wonderful success. There were approximately 40 youth who participated this year. Everyone seemed to really like seeing the kids experiencing what it is like to try to catch a pig. Also, the lawnmower train was a great success as well. There were approximately 150 kids who each took a ride. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make these two events a success. I was happy to have some of the same folks enter this year’s photo contest. I appreciate their taking time to photograph Czech heritage and enter the contest. Thank all of you very much. To all volunteers — thank you so very much; your time and effort is most certainly appreciated. To Melanie and David — you organized another great car show and pageant. The many, many week nights you spent getting things ready were evident. Both events were a success. And, congratulations to 2009 Czech Feszt Ambassador Melanie Zavodny. You will fulfill the title superbly! And God bless 2008 Czech Feszt Ambassador Rosie Steinman; I know that she will continue promoting Czech heritage whenever and wherever she can. — Děkuji vám všem moc. Katherine Morris

District Six youth enjoy family fun day

A great big thank you to all the youth who came out to our District Six Fall Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 25, 2009, that was hosted by Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. We had so much fun that the day flew by. You all made me so very proud of our youth in District Six—you always do. We had a total of 35 youth participate in the Christmas ornament contest, and a total of 42 youth present. Youth clubs who attended were Lodges 4, Hal-

Youth also made candy corn bags to place inside the pots. I would like to thank the judges for the youth ornament contest. They were Kathy Ahlstrom, Heather Blaha, and Kirby Bubela, who is a past youth club member of Lodge 30, Taiton. It is always great to have our young adults return to help with the youth program. On October 31, my sister, mother and I helped out at Czech Feszt in the Scarecrow Patch. Our job was to assist people young and old in making scarecrows out of simple materials and all of this could be done for no charge. It was especially fun working with the young kids because we got to see just how creative they really are. The girls would make girl scarecrows and put dresses on them with high heels. I designed a frame to help hold the skirts out, and the kids were delighted. The boys used tee shirts and jeans and

(StatePoint) There’s good news for parents who want to help their children get a college education but don’t know how to pay for it. We all know that scholarships are available for talented athletes and students with straight A’s. But what if your daughter would rather pick up a paintbrush than a basketball? Or your son is a brilliant writer but doesn’t get the best grades? Each year, cash awards and nearly $4 million in tuition scholarships are made available to creative teens nationwide, through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, now in its 87th year. Young artists and writers can earn money for college by using their talents in a variety of disciplines, including poetry, video game design, short stories, sculpture and more. ~ SoundCzech ~ Bread, Porridge, and Soup

Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s language course in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today, we will look at some popular Czech sayings revolving around food — with the help of a song by the group Kamelot called Dvě kůrky. Dvě kůrky means two crusts and refers to the popular Czech saying — všude je chleba o dvou kůrkách — literally meaning everywhere bread has two crusts, which implies that life, with its ups and downs, is pretty much the same wherever you go.

comfort people about a problem or quarrel. In other words, emotions will cool down, and things will look brighter in time. There are also a number of phrases to do with cooking — kdo si co uvaří – to si taky sní means as you cook it, you will have to eat it, and is just another version the saying — kdo jak si ustele, tak si lehne — as you make your bed . . . you must lie on it. Vařit z vody — is one of my favorite sayings because it means to produce something out of nothing or very little as we often do during the silly season. terested in traveling, genealogy, cuisine, customs and history. The CATV programs are broadcast in the English language with over 1,000 hours of archived programs on our website. CATV is founded and produced by John Honner. CATV is available on the internet website www.catvusa.com with a complete archive. Every week several tens of thousands of viewers can be found all over the country for example Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma and New Jersey. We also have an international viewership mostly from Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and states of European Union. Not only do the viewers have an internet option but we also broadcast on Comcast cable television channel 19 on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. under the name John Honner CATV Show in 60 cities in the state of Illinois. CATV has broadcast in English for six years and tries to bring information about Czech culture and traditions, genealogy and other important nonprofit events taking place here in the United States that are related to Czech heritage. Reports from the Czech Republic and United States make a very important part of the CATVs broadcasting as well. All previously broadcasted television reports can be found and viewed via our website www.catvusa.com in the “Archived Broadcast.” Czech-American TV’s main objective is similar to one of public broadcasting television stations (PBS). CATV also produces an Internet eRadio program with Czech polka music which you can listen to any time from your computer from anywhere in the world! Even computers with slow dial-up Internet connection can tune in to CATV Radio. Let us introduce the following programs. Famous Czechs Biographies of important figures in
