Making a difference
Cassandra Reyes gets ready to build a birdhouse at Mitchell Lake Fall Festival. Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club members assisted at the festival for Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 24.
With Thanksgiving close at hand . . .
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our thoughts and prayers go out to Fort Hood and the entire military community as they deal with the tragic and senseless loss of life experienced on November 5, 2009. With Thanksgiving close at hand, may we be especially mindful of the selfless service and sacrifice of our military troops. Many of our members are active-duty military, serving both at home and abroad. We proudly salute them and pray for their safe return. Lodges and individuals seeking to make monetary donations to help support the families of the victims involved in the shooting are encouraged to direct their support to The Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of Association of the United States Army. Thanks to the members of Lodge 142, Houston for their quick response and generous support of this AUSA project. Checks should be made payable to The Central TexasFort Hood Chapter, Association of the US Army, ATTN: Community Response to 11/5; P.O. Box 10700; Killeen, Texas 76547. Please know that 100 percent of all funds received will go to meet these needs. Donations are tax deductible. For more information about the Fort Hood AUSA chapter and its soldier support programs, please log on to the chapter web site at www.forthoodausa.org. Creative carving
For Make a Difference Day, members of Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club gathered to carve pumpkins. Youth and parents then delivered the pumpkins to local rest homes so they could be admired during the autumn season. Quade and Savanna Proctor are pictured delivering a pumpkin to a rest home resident.

Murphy was an Optimist Here are some laws that seem to govern everything that could possibly go wrong in life:
• Any technical problem can be solved if you have enough time and money. Corollary: You never have enough time or money.
• When you ask your husband (or wife!) to pick up five items at the grocery store, and then you add one more as an afterthought, he/she will forget at least two of the first five.
• Most pay raises are just large enough to raise your taxes and just small enough to have no effect on your takehome pay.
• Food that starts out hard will soften when it gets stale. Food that starts out soft will harden when it gets stale.
• The candy bar you bought to eat on the way home from the store is always hidden at the bottom of the grocery bag. • When you work late, no one will notice. When you leave work five minutes early, you will always meet your boss in the elevator.

Featuring Heritage ’09 Updates and Sales Agent Recognition/Information
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. It seems strange that the year has gone so quickly. Next year will be upon us in no time, and I believe that now is the time to set goals for the coming year. I was going through some files that I have had for quite some time and came across a 20-step system of goal setting by Tom Hopkins that I would like to share with you. Here are Tom’s 20 steps regarding goal setting:
Goal Setting in 20 Steps
9. Include your loved ones in your goals. Involve them and they will back you up when you need encouragement.
14. Don’t chisel your goals in granite. Sometimes you have to change goals to conform to your growing awareness of what is really important in your life.
19. Understand luck, and make it work for you. Expect good things to happen, and they probably will.
By Hiram Dixon, FICF, LUTCF, CFFM • State Field Representative - Districts One/Two/Three
1. If it’s not in writing, it is not a goal. An unwritten want is a wish, a dream, a never-happen. If it is in writing, it is a commitment.
2. If it’s not specific, it is not a goal. Broad desires and lofty aims have no effect. It must be concrete.
3. Goals must be believable. If you don’t believe you can achieve a goal, you won’t pay the price for it.
4. An effective goal is an exciting challenge. It must demand your best and a bit more or it is not going to change your ways and elevate your lifestyle.
5. Goals must be adjusted to new information. Adjust goals down if they become unbelievable or up if they are too easy.
10. Set goals in all areas of your life. Have other goals besides career objectives.
11. Your goals must harmonize. Whenever you detect a conflict in your goals, set priorities that will eliminate the conflict. 12. Review your goals regularly. Remember, long term goals can only be achieved if they are the culmination of short term goals.
13. Set vivid goals. Define not only what you want, but by when you want it, and concentrate on it for a few moments every day.
October Top Producer
8. Maintain a balance between longterm goals. Long-term goals tend to be hidden in a fog of the future, so have some short term goals—like clothes, cars, vacations—to keep your excitement up.
16. Have a set of goals for every day, and review results each night.
17. Train yourself to crave your goals. Visualize yourself possessing what you have set your goals for.
18. Set activity goals, not production goals. Activity will lead to production by itself.
20. Start now. Give goal setting two hours of concentrated focus today. Then set aside 10 minutes a day to review and revise. After that, two minutes a day and one hour a week is all it will take to keep you on track.
I believe that without goals in life, you are just floating along and whatever happens happens. It is imperative that you know where you are going and how you are going to get there. If your goal is to purchase a new house, new vehicle, vacation home or whatever, take a picture of it and place it somewhere you will see it each day to help keep you focused on what you want to accomplish. Please feel free to contact me if you would like assistance in setting goals for next year. —SPJST—

6. Dynamic goals guide our choices. If you want it badly enough, you’ll turn off the TV and get to it. (Get-RDone)
7. Don’t set short-term goals for more than 90 days. If you set a short term goal that takes more than 90 days, you may lose interest.
15. Reach out into the future. The idea of goal setting is to plan your life rather than taking it as it comes. Begin by setting 10-year goals then five-year, 30-month, 12-month, monthly, weekly, and finally, goals for tomorrow and each day for the coming week.

Power of Persistence
Submitted By Philip McBee, FICF, CFFM Field Operations Manager
One small effort, by itself, will not have much of an impact. Yet, when that same effort is repeated again and again, the results can be truly magnificent. Persistence has power. With persistence, soft drops of water can wear away the hardest stone. With persistence, a tiny seed can grow into an enormous tree. With persistence, what seems to be impossible can in fact be achieved. With persistence, the setbacks and obstacles are overcome, one by one. With persistence, you will get where
you intend to go. Persistence does not require a massive effort or special resources or exotic skills. To benefit from the power of persistence, all you must do is keep on going. Persistence is really quite simple, and available to anyone who decides to use it. Choose to put the power of persistence on your side, and you’ll bring the very best of your dreams to life. — Ralph Marston —SPJST—

Heritage ’09 Member Service Program
SPJST introduced the member service program in the spring. Since then, sales agents across the state have been contacting members to review their life insurance certificates and ensure that all information on file at the Home Office is correct. Agents are reviewing items like name changes, contact information, and beneficiary designations. Agents can also answer most questions about certificates and membership in general. Forms that are completed with updated information are entered into a drawing held monthly at the Home Office. Winners receive $100 for the member and $100 for the agent. Con-
gratulations to:
November Drawing (for October forms received) Member - Thomas Brosh Lodge 23, Moravia Sales Agent - Albert Olsovsky Lodge 23, Moravia
Agents will continue to contact members. When your agent calls and asks to review your certificate and update information—it may be worth $100 if you are next month’s Member Service Program contest winner! Good luck! —SPJST—

Sell Right and D.B.R.
Submitted by Karen Kaspar, FIC, CFFM State Field Representative - Districts Five/Six/Seven
You create a future, characterized by high performance and fulfillment, by making a responsible commitment to think right, work right, sell right, study right, and live right. Here are 10 strategies for forming the habit of selling right. Give it your best. Do every selling job to a finish and accept nothing but your best every time. As a professional salesperson, you are paid for the quality of service you provide with what you know, for those you know. Look like a winner. If you look like a winner, it’s much easier to be one. You’ll look as if you represent a reliable company. You’ll look as if you’re accustomed to influencing people and closing sales. Enjoy every sales call. Before every sales call, ask yourself this question: How would I feel about making this call if I knew it was going to be a good sale? Pay attention. Learn as much as possible about your prospects—their reputations and capacities, who they are buying from now and what they are receiving for their dollars. Decide to be a shrewd observer. Build relationships. All things being equal, or not equal, prospects tend to buy from salespeople they trust, respect and like the most. Sell ethically. What is your ethical base? Can you articulate it? Can you identify how it influences your personal and professional behavior? Ethical behavior is doing the right thing because doing the right thing is the right thing to do. Manage sales resistance. Realize resistance doesn’t mean denial or refusal. In selling, it means, “Give me a reason to buy!” Close sales confidently. The most
important factor in closing sales is not the customer. It’s not the product. It’s not the price. It’s not the terms. It’s not the weather or business conditions. It’s you—the individual behind the sale—the closer who is thinking right and who has mastered a closing strategy. Develop endorsements. No advertising is as trusted as the spontaneous testimony of delighted customers. Expect endorsements. Service what you sell. Never forget a client. Never let a client forget you. D.B.R. As we are out among our clients, remember D.B.R. (Doing Business Right): 1. Give it your best. 2. Look like a winner. 3. Enjoy every sales call. 4. Pay attention. 5. Build relationships. 6. Sell ethically. 7. Give the client a reason to buy. 8. Sell confidently. 9. Develop leads. 10. Service what you sell.

District Two readies District Two Youth for fun lock-in Counselor expresses thanks Dear Members,
I hope you marked your calendars for Saturday, November 21, 2009— the night of our annual District Two Lock-In. It will be held in Temple at the Wilson Park Recreation Center, located off of Adams Avenue. The address is 2205 Curtis B. Elliott Drive. The time is from 7 p.m. Saturday night to 7 a.m. on Sunday morning. A couple of years ago, we had it at this same location, and everyone seemed to really enjoy the different activities. The gym is very nice and has added a small rock climbing area. There will be plenty of games, crafts, music, sports activities, hanging out with friends, food, prizes, and very little, if any, sleep all night. For those chaperones who will be driving youth home, we will have a quite place to snooze. With the many activities planned and those which are provided by the REC center, I ask that no electronic devises or cell phones be brought in. Please do not bring anything of value, as we will not be responsible for any items. This is a time to enjoy old friends and meet new ones. Come and enjoy. I am sure there will be a lot of volleyball and basketball going on. Please invite a friend to come along and join in on the fun. I am in need of chaperones. Please call me if you can help out. We look forward to seeing you for a fun-filled night on Saturday. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Scenes from Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club’s November Meeting
Dear Readers, The last meeting of Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club was held on November 8, 2009, at Putt-Putt Fun Center in Killeen. We had a short meeting in which we discussed future meetings, and our youth leader re-
minded everyone to bring a new toy to donate at our December meeting to be held at Temple Mall on December 13. The toys will be donated to Santa Pal. After the meeting, the youth club members, friends, and parents got wrist bands and tokens to enjoy the
games. We golfed, rode bumper boats, and go-carts and played arcade games. It was a nice day and a lot of fun to spend time with friends, whether it was hitting a hole-in-one on the golf course or getting sprayed with water in a bumper boat!
Remember to bring your toy donation to the next meeting. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving, and see you in December! Fraternally, Stephanie Vanicek, Reporter —SPJST—

Fun family holiday activities
(StatePoint) It’s too easy to get caught in the commercial hustle and bustle of the holidays. The season shouldn’t just be about gifts, food and pageantry. It’s a time for families to enjoy each other’s company and draw closer together. There are many fun holiday activities parents and children can enjoy together that can strengthen family bonds — that won’t cost you a dime and will help you remember what the holidays should be all about. “The days leading up to the holiday are an exciting time, particularly for kids. Take advantage of this time to share in such fun and educational activities as reading holiday stories, creating your own holiday cards and even baking or cooking together,” says Sharon Darling, president and founder of the National Center for Family Lit-

• Read Holiday Stories: In the weeks before the holiday, gather your family’s favorite holiday books and read one story or chapter together nightly. Have children participate in following along, turning pages and by asking them questions about the story. Reading the characters in funny voices and acting out the stories can help even the biggest Grinch warm to reading.
• Sing Out Loud: Holiday songs are great for young kids, as they’re filled with fun rhymes and repetition. This helps kids learn new words and familiarize themselves with language. Consider making up your own words to such holiday favorites as “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Be sure to stick to the traditional lyrics when caroling in public!

• Make Your Own Cards: Have kids help make a list of recipients. Then help them write holiday messages and decorate holiday cards before mailing them. If kids are too little to write the message, have them help you create one and then sign their names or add drawings. Grandparents will appreciate these more than store-bought cards.
• Cook Up Some Fun: Have kids assist in the kitchen with holiday cooking or baking. This draws everyone to the same room and will help complete all those side dishes or holiday cookies. Have kids read recipes, measure ingredient and keep things organized. This helps them develop reading, counting and organizational skills while enjoying the tasty fruits of their labors. • Hold Holiday Movie Nights: Have kids, grandparents and parents pick out favorite seasonal films. We spent the morning helping out at Mitchell Lake Natural Area. The youth club members were volunteers in the various booths at the annual fall festival. As it turned out, there were so many volunteers who showed up from other organizations that our youth helped as much as possible by
carrying plants to the cars for the festival-goers, and then we spent the rest of the morning having so much fun visiting the booths! Some of our youth even got to make birdhouses. —SPJST—

watching each movie, get kids thinking by having them invent their own sequels. Simply ask them what they think happens next in the story. They even can write their own stories the family can read together.

• Make Holiday Lists: Have every family member make his or her holiday list. Don’t list presents you want. Instead, list things that make you happy or about which you are thankful. Then, have kids decorate the lists with fun borders and hang them on the refrigerator until New Year’s Day. Every time someone goes for a snack they will brighten the day.

Mazat Karty - Play Cards
Welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language programme in which listeners can learn new expressions through music lyrics. In today’s episode, you’ll hear the expression mazat karty which means to play cards. Mazali jsme karty is the past tense and is used in the song Marta by the Czech 1960s folk trio KTO (Kamarádi táborových ohňů or The Campfire Boys). The song is about what a bunch of friends and what they do when Marta fails to show up.
Taken literally, the verb mazat means to oil or to grease. It can also mean to spread, as in butter or jam on a slice of bread. Namažu ti kus chleba máslem – I’ll spread some butter on bread for you. More maliciously, the verb is also used in the idiom mazat mu med kolem huby – literally, to spread honey around someone’s yap, meaning to butter someone up. Clearly, mazat karty, or playing cards, is just one of many uses. One can imagine the feel of greasy old cards in one’s hands. You might say that someone in the game who bets carefully, but times his wins right is mazaný – crafty or smart. Likewise, mazat si kapsu means to line one’s pocket, to feather one’s nest, which you could do, I suppose, if you played and won a lot.

Someone taking too long to play their hand would be criticized: nemaž se s tim — stop fussing over it, as in just play your cards. And someone who fails to pay their debts might have to mazat — run like the blazes. The next time you play cards, make sure you don’t lose the shirt off your back or you, too, might have to make an unexpectedly quick exit! Mazej, kámo, mazej . . . run, buddy, run! — Jan Velinger

Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America through Galveston Island will open to the public Saturday, November 21 at Moody Gardens. The Houston Civic Symphony will perform Sunday, November 22 at 3 p.m. at the Ballroom in Moody Gardens Hotel. Bedrich Smetana’s Die Moldau opens the concert. Written in the 1870s as one of six works known collectively as Ma Vlast or “The Fatherland,” Die Moldau paints a picture of one of Bohemia’s great rivers commonly known by its German name, The Moldau. The tone poem points the picture of the river from its quiet origins, building and flowing through the Czech countryside, then flowing onward to the sea, much like the immigrants from the region would do in the next half century, headed for the New World. Next, the orchestra will perform Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77 by Johannes Brahms. The concert concludes with Ravel arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The Beauty of Giving and Sharing Today, November 11, we are in possession of this incredible collection to be shared with you and all the world. We must first buy some appropriate etageres and hope to have its grand opening in February 2010 for your enjoyment. The love story of Eric and Barbara Špatná Ottervik as told by Barbara:
Simply put, Eric Ottervik fell in love. Not just with his bride-to-be, Barbara Špatná, but with her family and all things Czech. Most importantly, he fell in love with helping Barbara get further in touch with her heritage and her roots. Barbara, a full-blooded Czech and first generation American growing up in Queens, New York (home to many Czechs and Slovaks as well as the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden and perhaps the last remaining Czech restaurants in New York City, Zlata Praha, grew up speaking Czech as her first language, yet never really appreciated her heritage until she met her aunt and uncle from Prague for the first time in 1981. It was a pivotal moment for her and was followed by her

first trip abroad in 1982 to spend a month in what was then Czechoslovakia. At that point, she was hooked. Eric and Barbara met in 1985, married in 1987, and in 1988, took their first trip together to what was still communist Czechoslovakia. Eric was into his “music phase” and collected as much Czech classical music as possible on that first trip to Prague – so much so that they had to pay $72 duty to leave the country with all the records! Returning home, there was no turning back: He was as much as in love with his new country as he was with his wife. And then the fun began. Together, Barbara and Eric started scouring flea markets, antique shows and emporiums, looking for “all things Czech” from the time period 1918 to 1938 when the country was independent. And, thus, began the collection. An end of day vase, a belt buckle, a piece of Amphora, perfume bottles, candlesticks . . . pottery, glass, porcelain . . . a vast and varied collection, not just quality, but also representing all facets of the items that had been exported at the time. Much of these items, created solely for export during the period of 1918 to 1938, were actually never available (or seen) in Czechoslovakia. And all were marked (or “signed” as the expression goes), with some sort of etched or stamped marking. In fact, when Barbara’s relative saw the collection, they were astonished: The items were unlike anything they had seen in their youth or since. Fifteen years later, when their daughter Kathleen Ottervik Jameson returned to Houston (she is now Assistant Director of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts), the family stumbled upon the original “outpost” of the Czech Cultural Center in a strip mall and met Effie Rosene, the effervescent darling of Czech culture! Again, it was happenstance . . . collectors and lovers of all things Czech . . . Barbara and Eric were always looking to expand their collection and meet new people. Of course, Barbara had to buy a necklace from the gift shop offerings! Barbara and Eric had always thought that their collection of over

1200 pieces of glass, china, and pottery was “museum quality” and especially worth sharing with others particularly because for native Czechs, these items were unknown, and for “transplanted” Czechs, the collection was all encompassing and brought a whole new art form to the world and the Czech culture. And so they started to look for the perfect place to donate their collection. They were keen on finding people as passionate about their heritage and sharing that heritage with the rest of the world. And during all this time, Bill and Effie Rosene were seeking to do the same, establishing the Czech Cultural Center to celebrate, share and promote the rich cultural abundance of a major Slavic ethnic group and their history. There was no doubt in Barbara and Eric’s minds, that these folks were as committed to the preservation of history as they were. And so began conversations on the potential donation of their lifetime collection. The rest, as they say, is history.
Catching Up As noted earlier, we enjoyed as always our October visit in the Czech Republic with its colorful nature and this time early, severe cold temperature. We both took the opportunity to be really miserable with two whole weeks of a viral upper respiratory illness everyone else had. On the other hand, we were forced to “rest” which we rarely do as there’s so much else going on in life. Working through our mail, we noted and congratulate the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center’s opening in La Grange as reported in our SPJST newspaper, the Vestnik. Do take time to “Czech” it out. Our state of Texas now has numerous great cultural and heritage centers including the new Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Fayetteville, Caldwell, and certainly others all worthy of your visit. On November 17, CCMH featured a brief talk and book signing with Kenneth Breaux, author of Courtesies of the Heart. We at the Czech Center Museum Houston never forget to be thankful, grateful, to be; it is because of you! We appreciate your caring, your support.
