Editor’s Note
VӖSTNÍK
Happy Thanksgi ving! Thanksgiving allows us to focus on our blessings and the freedoms we
enjoy. The gift of family and friends — those are certainly the riches in my life. It is the precious times that we hold dear to our hearts and memories and special moments that can never be replaced, neither by time nor all the wealth in the world. Thanksgiving is a chance for us to stop and reflect and think about what is really important to us in this life; just how precious and fragile it is, and to not waste what time we are given with the special people in our lives. Whether you have planned a grand feast surrounded by friends and family, a quiet dinner for two, or a simple frozen dinner or takeout, it is not really the edible food, but rather who we share them with that counts most of all, and to me, this is the true value and meaning of Thanksgiving. Please remember our men and women who are serving our country and can’t be with their loved ones this year and vice versa. We owe these brave men and women and their families a debt of gratitude that we will never be able to repay. It is because of their sacrifice that we can gather around the table in peace this year to celebrate Thanksgiving with family, friends, and loved ones. God bless you all.
Recycle Holiday Greeting Cards Give your old holiday greeting cards a future life by donating them to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, an organization for abused, abandoned, ad neglected children. The children earn money by removing the fronts of donated cards to make new ones sold in packets of 10. This year’s cards will be accepted through February 28, 2010. You can mail your donations to:
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children Recycled Card Program 100 St. Jude’s Street Boulder City, Nevada 89005
The Recycled Card Program began over 30 years ago. Wishing to show donors appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived for turning the previous year’s Christmas cards into “new” cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted with their unique “thank you,” they requested the children sell them the special cards. And so, the St. Jude’s Ranch Recycled Card Program was born.

Scenes from District Seven Fall Family Fun Day - Part I
Eighty-three SPJST members and guests gathered at Landa Park in New Braunfels for the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday, November 15, 2009. The weather was perfect, and Lodge 185, New Braunfels members were gracious hosts. District President Colleen Jenke presided at the short business meeting. Lodge 185 Youth Club members posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Lodge 185 President Kathleen Mills welcomed everyone. Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska reported SPJST came through the financial crisis and is financially stable. Mikeska
recognized District Seven’s Sandra Hoggard as the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) Fraternalist of the Year for 2009. SPJST and Sandra were in the spotlight at the convention. The video of Sandra and her activities—superbly created by Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny— was viewed at the NFCA convention and also at the District Seven Meeting. District Director Bob Bayer reported $5,447 has been collected for the Jerry Elzner Memorial Fund for the Czech Heritage Museum. District Seven voted to donate $2,000 to the fund. State FAC Chester Jenke noted the District Seven Bowling Tournament raised $994 for SPJST ENC. The dis-
trict voted to add to the total and make it an even $1,000. State Field Representative Karen Kaspar recognized the sales agents. District Seven is leading the state in certificates issued and insurance written. District King Lane Hoggard, Queen Shelby Howard, Duke Ryan Henke, and Duchess Emily Hancock were recognized. Czech Heritage Museum Director Roxy Bertrand reported the prize drawing at the Corpus Christi End-ofSummer Getaway raised $700 for the Czech Heritage Museum. State Youth Director John Hoelscher recognized the youth leaders. All of the cabins at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm
should be completed in about five weeks. Rest Home Director Jerry Sijansky stated the new assisted living facility is opening soon. Leonard Mikeska gave the table prayer. A delicious pork tenderloin and chicken strip meal was served. Ciara Popham and Ernest Jasek were winners of $20 gift cards for referrals. The silent auction raised $452 to be split between the SPJST ENC and Czech Heritage Museum. Contests, games, and fellowship were enjoyed by all. Bettie House, Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 32, Victoria Christmas social Thursday, Dec. 10
Can you believe it’s that time of the year? Christmas is such a wonderful time — and, of course, we all love to celebrate with food and music. Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, December 10 for our annual Christmas social. Social time will begin at 6 p.m., and serving will start at 6:30 p.m. The lodge will provide baked ham and friend turkey. Everyone is asked to bring a dish (or two!). It can be one of your traditional Christmas dishes — something you think of when you hear ham or turkey — or just your favorite food. Whatever you bring, we’ll eat! Also, we are asking for canned goods to be donated to VCAM. At our November 12 meeting, we celebrated October, November, and December birthdays. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Evelyn Horelka, Mary Raska, and Richard Raska. The cake was provided by Mary Tijerina. Thanks, Mary. It was delicious! We also remembered Veterans Day by bringing photos of our members or family members who honorably served our nation. We are proud to have several veterans in our group and honored the following: Mark Buccigrossi (Air Force), son-in-law of Franklin and Lois Elles; Franklin Elles (Army); Joe Elles (Army), brother of Franklin Elles; Al Haisler (Army); Alfred Horelka (Army); Chris Kabela (Army) and Ed Kabela (Army), brother and nephew of Evelyn Horelka; Andrew Leshikar (Air Force), nephew of Lois Elles; Richard Raska (Army); Raymond Tijerina (Army) and Michael Gregory Tijerina (Marines), husband and son of Mary Tijerina; and Tim Veilleux (Navy) and Beverly Veilleux (Army), son-in-law and daughter of Alfred and Evelyn Horelka. Again, we give heartfelt thanks to you — and your families — for serving this Great Land so we can truly enjoy our freedom. November is also the month we elect lodge officers. Mary Raska has served as our secretary for many years. She decided it was time for her to step down from office. Thank you, Mary, for your many, many years of service! As you read this article, I feel certain you have already had your turkey dinner. I hope you are sitting by the fire — reading the Vestnik — watching football games . . . and reflecting on the many things you are thankful for. It is my favorite holiday to celebrate . . . no commercialism or gifts. Just truly enjoying family and friends — and remembering why the Pilgrims crossed the ocean — talk about a leap of faith! Lodge 48, Beyersville Progressive 42 Tournament was held on Saturday, October 17, 2009. It was a day of fraternalism and domino playing. There were 52 players this year. I guess it was too wet to plow or do anything else, so it was a perfect time to play dominoes! There were snacks and coffee to enjoy and then, a noon meal of turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, ham, peaches, and fresh baked rolls. Many thanks to Freddie and Carol Wuensche of Thorndale for catering the meal. We would also like to thank the many people who brought those delicious snacks for all to enjoy.
As for the game, it was neck and neck throughout the day for players: Erwin Meiske, Bernice Blaschke, Norman Fuessel, Jimmy Turek, Maxine Jordan, Arnold Tydlachka, Dorothy Markert, Dorothy Palm, Chester Jenke, Florice Tydlachka, Ruby Schroeder, Ronnie Honza, Ann Kunze, and John Wuensche. But, the tides turned and left some behind. At the end of the day, Jimmy Turek took first place with 11 wins. There were four players with 10 wins so the tie breaker kicked in. The total number of marks scored throughout the day was used to determine that Florice Tydlachka was the second place winner with
110 marks; John Wuensche came in third with 108 marks; Ann Kunze claimed fourth place with 103 marks; and Ronnie Honza fell short to win fifth place with 101 marks. Thanks to all of you who came to play, and we hope to see you all again next year. Also, we owe many thanks to State FAC Chester Jenke and wife Colleen for taking time out from their busy schedules to spend the day with us and especially to Colleen for helping tabulate the scores. our sympathy goes out to her family. Secretary Faith Lindeau read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported that she sent get well cards to Alice Barnes, Monalee Hattendorf, Agnes Reznicek, and Virgie Valentine. She further stated that Monalee had surgery and was at Trinity Rehab facility, and Agnes fell and following a few days in the hospital, is now at Manor Care on Skyline Road. A sympathy card was also sent to the family of Alice Barnes. Hostesses for November were Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and Rose Ann Spann with assistance from Paula Arsenault. They did a great job, and Rose Ann had the tables decorated in a Thanksgiving theme. Thanks, ladies! Door prizes were brought by Rose Cuba, Kitty Rippin, and Jo Ann Wilcox with lucky winners being Lupe Esparza, Geri Kortokrax, and Wilma Stell. Also, Rose Ann’s table decorations of five sets of Thanksgiving salt and pepper shakers were given away in addition to 16 vases with a single red rose which were left for us to give away from Alice Barne’s funeral. We certainly had lots of winners and happy folks. Rose Ann presented a Thanksgiving tea pot to President Mary Ann for all the work that she did in connection with the meal following Alice’s funeral. Then, Anna Johnson gave Mary Ann 10 crochet hangers for making the turkey, dressing, and gravy for the lunch. Mary Ann can do everything. She is greatly appreciated! The president thanked everyone for the 160 food items brought for St. Thomas Food Pantry. Hopefully, the donations will make for a happy Thanksgiving for those in need. The Christmas social/dinner was discussed, and it was decided that instead of members exchanging gifts, we give money and let Father Anthony decide on what needy family at St. Thomas to give it to. A monetary gift from the Club will be given to Father Anthony, and our semi-annual donation will also be made to the church for allowing us to use the hall area. Lunch was discussed, and it was decided to have ham and roast chicken which the Club will pay for. Jo Ann Wilcox will bring the ham, and Pat Cabrera will bring the roast chicken, Everyone else was asked to bring a food item to go with ham and chicken. Hostesses for December will be Lupe
Esparza, Mary Jean Loy, Rosie Steinman, and Jo Ann Wilcox. Chairperson Debbie Skrasek of the nominating committee along with committee members Marie Keller and Libbie Vrla presented the slate of officer for the coming year who were then elected by the membership. Officers for year 2010 will be: President Mary Ann Krivanek, Vice President Betty Krenek, Secretary Elizabeth Creamer, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to November celebrants Elizabeth Creamer, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, Merel Kovar, and Mary Agnes Ward. May you all have many more. Stanley Krenek handled the 50/50 dollar games, and lucky winners were Camille Bolcer and Helen Skrasek. Congratulations, ladies! Some of our members brought their craft items so we were all able to do some shopping. I didn’t know that we had that much talent in our group. It was fun, and I certainly am enjoying the apron and silver bracelets that I purchased. After the meeting adjourned, grace was said, a great turkey dinner with all the trimmings was enjoyed, then games were played. A good time was had by all.
News Willie Mae Becan’s grandson Tracy Miller will be getting married on Christmas, and the wedding will be in Hawaii. Willie Mae, you really need to go! Her granddaughter Melanie Tracth is doing much better now. She has full use of her arms, is able to stand with the help of equipment, and her husband has outfitted their van so that they can travel. They are planning a trip to see Melanie’s grandmother who lives in in Jackson, Mississippi, and who will be 93 years young over the Christmas holidays. I hear that Helen Skrasek went to Oklahoma City by Amtrak to help her son make klobase. Not only was she going to be the taster, but the maker, too. Lydia Alholm has been on another winning spree. She went on an overnight trip to Choctaw where she was a winner. Then, a few days later, she went to WinStar and was a winner again. She continues to be a bingo winner at the Wellington. Good for you! Lydia Alholm and I attended the second dedication of the three monuments in honor of the Veterans of World War II from Colleyville recently. These monuments were orig-
nally dedicated on June 8, 2002, at The Village of Colleyville, but now were moved to a park at the Senior Citizens Center, and another ribbon cutting was held. Lydia’s name is on one of the monuments, and her brother’s name Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Tirk, Jr. is on another monument. Her brother did not return home as he was shot down over Italy. We were guests of the Center for lunch. This is a more beautiful and peaceful location for these monuments. Bob and Pat McWilliams went to Hawaii recently with their son and another friend where they had a most wonderful time. They flew into Honolulu and toured the island and Kauai where all the beautiful flowers are. They enjoyed all the foliage and scenery, entertainment, and food. Sister Lil and I enjoined the Pops Symphony at Bass Hall the other day where the Von Trapp Family was featured. These three sisters and a brother are the great-grandchildren of Captain Von Trapp and grandchildren of his youngest son. I am sure everyone has seen the movie or stage production of “Sound of Music” a few times at least. These young children

sang beautifully, spoke of their family, told funny incidents about Maria as relayed to them by their grandfather, and wore Alpine clothes. One of the girls said their dresses were original dresses worn by Maria. After escaping from Austria, Captain Von Trapp eventually brought his family to the United States and settled in Vermont, but these children’s immediate family lives in Montana. The oldest child goes to Brown University, and the remaining three children are still in high school. They sang all the songs from the movie plus more, and it was a most enjoyable afternoon. Two years ago, Lil and I along with friends, Joe and Joyce, were in Salzburg where the movie was filmed and saw the steps and grounds where the children played. We saw the cemetery, church, and theater where the family sang before making their get-away. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, December 2. Don’t forget to bring cash for a needy family and a dish to go with ham and roast chicken. See you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club: Super Bingo Bake Sale and More . . .
On November 7, 2009, SPJST Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club got together and gave the kitchen crew a break from selling Super Bingo Burgers. The youth served sausage wraps, chili and cheese nachos, cheese nachos, a variety of sliced cakes, and cookies to the bingo players. The youth also had a bake sale with a lot of different baked goods. The youth baked cakes, brownies, cobblers, cookies, and candy. The youth had a great time serving food and enjoying fellowship among
themselves and their parents. The youth sold out of everything by the time bingo had its halftime break. They also sold all of their baked goods. A big thank you to all the parents who helped make this a successful night for the youth, and thank you to our adult lodge members for their support. Fraternally, Frank Horak, Youth Leader —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Makes a Difference
Dear Readers, The Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club had its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 11, 2009. We also cleaned the conference room for Make a Difference Day. (We had to do the Make a Difference Day project on the 11th because our lodge had a reunion lunch on the 24th.) The kids worked as hard as the adults, and it shows. You would not believe
how great the conference room looks! It looks like a totally different room. For lunch, we ate sandwiches and drank “witches brew.” It tasted like punch, but there was smoke coming out of it. After all of the business was done, Lynda Novak had a surprise for us. She told us a spooky story and had us go in a dark room, one at a time. Inside,
we had to feel inside several bowls and identify the “body parts.” They weren’t really body parts. They were vegetables and other things that felt eerie. It was a great game. Thank you, Lynda, for making the day more fun. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 11 —SPJST—

To Hit the Hay
Welcome to a fresh edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s language series in which you can learn new phrases with the help of song lyrics. Today’s topic is sleep, and the song that goes with this edition is a popular lullaby by Petr Skoumal called ‘Když jde malý bobr spát’ – ‘When a little beaver goes to bed’.

from the verb hajat, a child’s way of saying to sleep. We also commonly use the idiom — jít na kutě — though no one really knows what kutě means and no dictionary seems to offer a clear explanation. And I am afraid that’s all we have time for in this edition of SoundCzech. I hope I haven’t put you to sleep. Thanks for listening and na shledanou. — Ruth Fraňková

The song describes how a little beaver gets ready to go to bed: he plays for a while, then he drinks a glass of milk, washes his ears, and brushes both his right and left tooth. Soon after, he is fast asleep, or as we say in Czech — spí jako dub — a phrase which literally translates he is sleeping like an oak. Notice that the phrase uses the verb spinká instead of spí, which is what little children or their mothers would say. There are many other ways of saying that someone is sound asleep. The closest translation would be tvrdě spí, but we can also say spí jako dřevo — he is sleeping like a log; spí jako by ho do vody hodil — he is sleeping as if thrown into water; or spí jako zabitý — he is sleeping as if he’d been killed. The song ends by an appeal to children: please, do just like the little beaver and march off to bed — pochodujte do hajan — a phrase that could be translated as hit the sack or hit the hay. The word hajany is derived

CEFT a UT musí spolupracovat By Jan Vaculík

Bude to jistě pěkný zážitek. Příští schůze bude v La Grange, Tx. Dne 23. ledna 2010 a pokud nastane změna, tajemník nám pošle pozvání s upřesněním místa. —SPJST—

The Velvet Revolution: 20 years later By Dr. Robert L. Uzzel Lodge 6, Cottonwood
The term “Velvet Revolution” was coined 20 years ago to describe a peaceful, theatrical, negotiated regime change in a small Central European state that no longer exists. Evidence indicates that the phrase was first used by western journalists and subsequently taken up by Czechs and Slovaks who helped bring down the communist government what was then Czechoslovakia, after more than four decades of repression. On November 17, 1989, an officially sanctioned student march in honor of a young Czech killed by the Nazis in 1939, turned into a vocal but peaceful demonstration against the communist government. The students had been inspired by the collapse of the Berlin Wall two weeks earlier. When the protestors reached the center of Prague, they were surrounded by riot police and brutally attacked. On November 25, approximately 800,000 protesters poured into streets in a massive show of defiance of a government rapidly losing power. Eventually, the protests led to talks between government officials and the Civic Forum, a group of dissidents led by playwright Vaclav Havel, the co-author of the Charter 77 Human Rights Manifesto who spent several years in prison because of his political activities. By the end of the year, the communists had ceded power and Havel had become Czechoslovakia’s first post-communist president. On Saturday November 14, 2009, Havel opened the 20th anniversary celebrations with a concert attended by celebrities. Legendary rocker Lou Reed, soprano Renee Fleming, and folk singer Joan Baez performed to a crowd of about 500 gathered at 13thcentury church in downtown Prague. Baez performed the civil rights hymn “We Shall Overcome” in both Czech and English to massive applause by an audience that included former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who was born in Prague. Fleming sang “Rusalka” and “Ave Maria” and was then joined by Reed on his song “Perfect Day.” Video messages from President Barack Obama, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were broadcast along with greetings
from rock stars Mick Jagger and Bono during the nationally televised concert. “Your spirit, your courage inspired the world,” Obama said, while Gorbachev praised the peaceful nature of the Velvet Revolution. On Tuesday, November 17—now an official Czech holiday—an estimated 5,000 people gathered in Prague to take part in a re-creation of the original march. A free rock concert was given on Narodni Street, the spot where the communist security forces had brutalized students a few hundred meters from the bottom of Wenceslas Square. The celebration was organized by Opona, a nonprofit organization established to observe the milestone anniversary of the dismantling of the Iron Curtain. —SPJST—
