2009-2010 SPJST District Three Queen Gena Weeks is pictured with the Wheelie-ing Elvi at the Arlington Parade of Lights on Saturday, December 12. Before Gena boarded the SPJST Float, she took a moment to meet the Wheelie-ing Elvi. The Wheelie-ing Elvi are big guys who don illuminated jump suits, sunglasses and pompadour wigs, climb aboard mini-bikes, and make a precision riding team like no other.

Editor’s Note
VӖSTNÍK
Count Your Blessings The year 2009 is coming to a close. It’s time to put the challenges
of the year behind and set an optimistic tone to take SPJST into 2010. Let’s make a fresh start in the New Year by putting SPJST and its future at the top of our list of priorities. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep . . . you are richer than 75 percent of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace . . . you are among the top 8 percent of the world’s wealthy. If you woke up this morning with more health than illness . . . you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation . . . you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death . . . you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If your parents are still alive and still married . . . you are very rare, even in the United States. If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful . . . you are blessed because although the majority can, most do not. If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder . . . you are blessed because you can offer healing touch. If you can read this message . . . you are more blessed that over two billion people in the world that can-
not read at all. To all Vestnik readers, I thank you so much for your support this year, and I wish you all the best in 2010. Keep the articles and photos coming! Have a good year, and . . . count your blessings.

Grant that I may bring no tear to any eye. When this New Year in time shall end, let it be said I’ve played the friend, have lived and loved and labored here, and made of it a happy year.” —Edgar Guest “The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. Lodge 29, Taylor member expresses calendar thanks
Dear SPJST, Just a note to say I always look forward to the new calendar you send. It is one of the few calendars that still display Sundays of the year in red. All others seem to be afraid to do so. Sincerely, William Tesmer Corsicana, Texas —SPJST—
Lodge 183, Arlington youth, mother express thanks to District Three
Katelyn and I would like to thank everyone in District Three for the generosity at the District Three Fall Meeting/Fundraiser. There were lots of wonderful baskets donated and a draw-
ing for an American Girl Doll. We will use the money to subsidize the medical bills. If anyone would like to give a blood donation for Katelyn through Carter Katelyn Daniel Blood Bank, her sponsor number is SPON048467. Katelyn is doing great, and she has responded very well to the treatments. She has about 16 more weeks of treatments before she starts a two and onehalf year maintenance period were she will be checked once a month. We want to thank everyone for their generosity, fraternalism, and support as we continue our treatments. Have a happy holiday and may God bless each of you. After the meeting adjourned, grace was said, and everyone enjoyed the Christmas luncheon of ham baked by Jo Ann Wilcox and roast chicken prepared by Pat Cabrera. We certainly had lots of other wonderful items to go along with the ham and chicken. Special thanks to our two meat chefs as they did a great job. Following, games were played and a good time as had by all. News Debbie Skrasek and her husband enjoyed the last performance of River Dance at the Bass Hall. The show certainly had a lot of good reviews. As guest of Lydia Alholm, she and I enjoyed attending the Christmas party of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women in Dallas. It is always so nice to see and visit with old friends. Bessie Petr catered the luncheon, and it was wonderful. On the way home, we stopped by Hurst for a short visit with Emil and Sally Milan which we thoroughly enjoyed. Several of our members enjoyed visiting the Milan Gallery where Alexandre Renoir, great-grandson of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, was featured in a showing of his artwork and was painting for all of us to watch. tainly is a personable young man and spent time visiting with all of us ladies. Then, the following week, several of our members attended the showing and presentation by Sharron Connelly at the Milan Gallery of her painting of the Last Supper. Her painting is outstanding, and her presentation was enjoyed by all. She explained how she was able to recreate Leonardo Da Vinci’s original painting of “The Last Supper.” After Sharron’s reception at the Milan Gallery, several of our members were invited by Jerry and Henrietta Milan to view their home museum. Everyone enjoyed the tour and historical explanations of all their museum and historical and artifact items. Here, we enjoyed Slovacek’s klobase on rye bread sandwiches along with a pivo. I had a note from Mary Kay Harrison of Alabama, niece of the late Mary Pavey, and she wrote how much she enjoys reading the Vestnik. She said her family is fine, and she sends greetings to all of Mary’s friends and family. By the time this article appears in the Vestnik, Christmas will have come and gone. Hopefully, everyone had a great holiday, and best wishes to all for
a happy and healthy new year. Our next meeting will be on January 6, 2010. Stay well, and see you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Tribute to Ruth Mikeska
Ruth was a very dear cousin of mine. She was one of the friendliest, most outgoing people and a wonderful cook. She could prepare a meal in less than 30 minutes because of all the good home-cooked food she had prepared ahead of time and had placed in the freezer. I understand she was a star bowler along with her sister Doris Provasek. In our younger days, many of us couples went dancing. And, Ruth still loved to dance. We wore the soles of the bottom of our shoes thin on Saturday nights at Flag Hall, Seaton Star Hall, and Tom Sefcik Hall or any hall available. She and Albert were one of the best dancing couples gliding across the floor. And, last but not least, she loved playing 84 dominoes. We couples played together for 40 years. The last several years, six of us widow women played once a week every week. If for some reason one of us could not play, rest assured, Ruth would find an alternate, and usually that alternate would be Pat, her daughter. We would drag her in. No cancellations on domino night! Ruth was a very good player, and I can vouch, she liked to win and most of the time she did. Ruth loved the Lord, her family, and her church family at St. Luke’s. I know how heavy and sorrowful our hearts are with her family, relatives, friends, and all of us. But isn’t it so glorious to know she can spend her first Christmas with Jesus in heaven. We love you, Ruth. LaVerne Pick Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

State Youth Director: camp tee-shirt design deadline Jan. 31
Dear Youth Leaders, The final weeks of 2009 always seem to be full of Christmas cheer. First, thanks to everyone who called or sent Christmas cards to me and my family. The last month of the year was a lot fun for me. I had the chance to go out with my family and meet with a lot of you and enjoy some great Christmas parties. Thank you for sharing the joy of the holiday season with us. This year’s Temple Christmas parade and SPJST Open House on December 7 were both wonderful successes. Thanks to everyone who turned out for these events. Both of the SPJST floats were in the Temple parade, and they both looked great. Members of the SPJST State Royalty court, due to the weather, rode inside the Corvettes but represented SPJST very well. Later, at the open house, State Royalty met many of the people

Mark Your Calendar: May 1 is Join Hands Day SPJST is making a big push for at least 50 adult lodges and youth clubs to get involved in Join Hands Day in 2010. A total of 43 adult lodges and youth clubs participated in 2009. This year, Join Hands Day falls on Saturday, May 1. The idea behind Join Hands Day is to get kids and adults to work with other community service, civic and religious groups on a project that can make a positive difference in the community. What can your lodge do? Some of the great projects from last year included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, and conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects. You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2010. The main thing — at this point — is committing to do something. When coming up

with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me. As an added incentive to make your Join Hands Day project a success, the SPJST Home Office is once again offering a $100 incentive for the lodges that participate in the program. The money is to be used in conjunction with your lodge effort. Your lodge’s Join Hands Day participation form is available online at www.spjst.org. Consider getting together with your lodge fraternal activities coordinator to organize your project.
Heritage ’09 Wrap Up SPJST had another good year recruiting new members. When new youth club members join, please remember to contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez to let her know who your new youth club members are. This information lets us know how much incentive award your youth club should be receiving when SPJST reaches it goal. If the goal of 2009 new members issued into SPJST is achieved, the incentive awards will be presented at your district’s incentive banquet.
LIT Retreat The 2010 LIT Retreat will be held on June 11 to 13 at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm close to Fayetteville, Texas. The program at this year’s LIT Retreat will allow our LITs to really get to know SPJST ENC facility and a lot of what it has to offer. This is a very exciting time for SPJST and its youth program.
2010 Youth Program Theme: “Dobry Den - SPJST Spirit 2010” Our youth club theme is “Dobry Den - SPJST Spirit 2010.” This is a great theme that hopefully will give our young artists the opportunity to make some great designs for next year’s camp tee-shirt design contest.
2010 SPJST Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest For those of you who are participating in the camp tee-shirt design contest, remember the deadline is January 31. This year’s grand prize will be a shopping spree at Wal-Mart and your design on the 2010 camp tee-shirt. Youth leaders, please encourage all your youth members to participate. All participants will receive two merit points and a participation certificate.

Dear Readers, We had the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club Christmas party and regular meeting on December 6, 2009. We had so much fun exchanging gifts. We played a game exchanging them, passing them side to side and across the table. I went to UIL at Salado ISD on December 10, and I received four first places and one fourth place. I hope everyone has a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Fraternally, Brandon Hoelscher —SPJST—

New Year’s Resolutions
New Year’s Eve has always been a time for looking back as well as planning for the coming year. We call these plans for the future “resolutions.” Listed below are some of the most popular new year’s resolutions. Read them and then share three new year’s resolutions that you may be making this year.
1. Spend More Time with Family and Friends Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others show that more than 50 percent of Americans pledge to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends in the new year.
2. Fit in Fitness Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man.
3. Lose Weight More than 66 percent of adult Americans are considered overweight so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular new year’s resolutions.
4. Enjoy Life More Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years. It’s an important step to a happier and healthier you!
5. Learn Something New Vowing to make this year the year to learn something new? Learning something new can be done in many different places, not just in school. How about you? Source: http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/New_Years_Resolutions.shtml
6. Help Others Volunteering takes many forms. Whether you choose to spend time assisting on a youth club project, helping a friend, or mowing a senior citizen’s yard, there are lots of things you can do to help others. 7. Get Organized “Getting organized” is a worthy resolution and appears on many people’s lists.
In the space below, list three new year’s resolutions you may have. If you need more space, you may write on another sheet of paper.

And, on Friday, December 18, we were notified that CCMH would receive a special initiative grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance (The CCMH is grateful for HAA’s support by an operating grant) to begin production of an opera featuring 10th century King Wenceslas who is the patron saint of the Czechs and Slovaks. This never-before production will be based on the short 22-year-old Wenceslas whose life is a made-to-order script for an opera. That was very exciting news and rounds out a 2009 fall season of memorable happenings for the organization. There has been already significant time spent in research and development and resources of persons and talent. Yes, it is within and all around. Robert Dvorak, board member and a working composer, has been mulling over the score to make for memorable and exciting music. Other resources—librettist, opera singers Gottfried Schiller and Anne HeathWelch, adjunct professors at Kingwood College along with Dr. Todd Miller, dean of music at the college, as well as Dr. Tom Sovik at UNT Denton—will lend professional advice in order to present vignettes of a presentation sometime in 2010. You will be the first to know all the developments of this mammoth undertaking. It should be known that this is termed the first phase, and the organization will seek additional support in order to complete this project.

A Multitude of Things to Do Including an Opera! We at the CCMH believe the sky is the limit. There are so many exciting things to do in our community outreach. For one, the plans for an opera of the Good King Wenceslas who lived a total of some 22 years; the patron of the Czech lands and subject of legend and lore, his life filled with pathos, tragedy, and goodness. Composer/Board member Robert Dvorak is hard at work composing the music and librettist John Kaiser the text. Standing by are Gottfried Schiller and Anne Heath-Welch, international opera singers and voice faculty at Kingwood Lone Star College Opera Workshop, along with Dr. Todd Miller, orchestra and chorale conductor, while Bill Rosene is researching the tenth century (900s) for period costumes, instruments, and history in collaboration with Houston Arts Alliance. You will be the first to know when this comes to fruition. Once again, we wish you the joys of the season with families and friends and prayers for absent ones; wishes for your good health, happiness, and God’s blessings at this Christmas time. A wish for peace with the end of wars and wishes for you and yours, our country and the world for an end to the recession with better economic times in the coming year 2010. Effie M.
