Carrying on Czech Traditions

The old Czech custom of offering bread and salt to a visitor with the greeting that “we may not have much, but we do have the essentials of life to offer and sustain you on your journey” was observed at the Czech Heritage Society of Texas’ state meeting held in Wall and hosted by Concho Valley Chapter of CHS recently. Lodge 49, Rowena youth Mladi cesi Brandon and Cammi Teplicek of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena present the bread and salt, a Slavic custom, to Ernest and Maggie Grmela of Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Looking on is Beverly Teplicek, left, of Lodge 49. BELOW: Helen Hegwood, far right, of Lodge 88, Houston leads District Five youth and adults in Christmas carols and Czech songs at S.P.J.S.T. Editor’s Note

VӖSTNÍK

Thanks, Longtime Members Last week’s Vestnik included 50and 75-year members and members

who will celebrate their 96th and 100th birthdays in 2010. We have one addition to the Age 100 list: Charles Joseph Kunetka Lodge 202, Jourdanton District Seven

Best wishes to all of our longtime members, and thank you for your membership. We appreciate you! Haiti Earthquake Our thoughts and prayers go to those involved in the Haiti earthquake that struck on Tuesday, January 12. We received information from the National Fraternal Congress of America. Excerpts appear below:

Dear NFCA Members, This week, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, resulting in tragic and widespread death and destruction. Some estimates put the death toll at more than 50,000. President Obama has been receiving updates on the urgent situation in Haiti, and top members of his team have been convening to formulate the government response. In times of disaster, the fraternal benefit industry historically has opened its collective heart and wallet to provide disaster relief funds and prayers. We again call on all fraternalists to provide whatever relief you can to the victims of this global disaster. Many of you already are responding and have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to this most altruistic and fraternal of causes. We thank you and remind everyone that any effort, no matter

the size, is important. The most effective way people can support relief efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations that are conducting relief operations. If your society (or lodge) would like to join in this humanitarian relief effort, you can help immediately by donating to such organizations as the Red Cross or World Vision. Sincerely, The National Fraternal Congress of America

With Sympathy We extend sincere sympathy to District Four Publication Committee Member Sharon Hohmann and her family. Sharon’s mother, Ida Chlapek, passed away January 7. Services were held January 11. Mrs. Chlapek was an active member of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

This Weekʼs Quote “Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” —Abraham Lincoln The Hereafter Nurse: “Your doctor is away on an emergency, but Dr. Franklin can see you. Patient: “Which doctor?” Nurse: “No, he’s highly qualified!”

*** Minister: “Do you spend much time wondering about the hereafter?” Grandpa: “I’ll say! When I look in the refrigerator, I ask myself, ‘What am I here after?’ ” —SPJST—

American grows in the new year

(SPM Wire) Do you know America’s projected population as the New Year dawns? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s population is more than 308 million as the country rings in the New Year and new decade. America first reached the 200 million population mark back in 1967, and hit the 300 million mark in 2006. The Bureau is projecting a U.S. population of 439 million in 2050. The American Revolution, who cares?

(NewsUSA) - When you say the Pledge of Allegiance, do you know what values you’re swearing to uphold? Most Americans would say that they know their nation’s history. In fact, according to the first national survey of adult knowledge of the American Revolution, 89 percent of Americans said that they could pass a basic test on their nation’s founding. But only 17 percent of those same adults actually managed to do so.

The American Revolution secured our nation’s independence and established its enduring form of representative government. Many of the everyday freedoms that most Americans exercise without a second thought — including the freedom to practice the religion of their choice, or not to worship at all — were established by the American Revolution. Only in understanding the liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights will Americans know how to preserve them. As Dr. Bruce Cole, president and CEO of The American Revolution Center, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, says, “Knowledge of the ideas on which our

constitutional system is built is essential to maintain the relevance and vibrancy of our government that is of the people, by the people and for the people.” Everyday Americans do not disagree — 90 percent think that United States citizens should know the history and principles of the American Revolution, even if they vastly overestimate their own knowledge. To help future generations remember America’s legacy, The American Revolution Center plans to construct The Museum of the American Revolution in historic Philadelphia, just steps away from Independence Hall and the

Liberty Bell. It will be the first national museum to tell the entire story of the American Revolution. “Through The Museum of the American Revolution, we hope to engage rising generations in the ongoing story that is America's democracy,” says Dr. Cole. Think that you could have passed the quiz? Maybe some of the survey’s findings will surprise you:

• More than 50 percent of Americans wrongly attributed the quote, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” to George Washington, Thomas Paine, or Presi-

dent Barack Obama, when it is in fact a quote from Karl Marx, author of “The Communist Manifesto.” • Sixty percent of Americans can correctly identify the number of children in reality-TV show couple Jon and Kate Gosselin’s household (eight), but more than one-third do not know the century in which the American Revolution took place (the 18th). • Nearly 50 percent of Americans believe the Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation or War of 1812 occurred before the American Revolution. Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club Busy with Fall, Christmas Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our youth club has been busy over the last couple of months. At the November meeting, members made door decorations and fruit bags for the Burleson St. Joseph’s Manor Nursing Home. Later in the month, some youth made and delivered pies to residents in the community for Thanksgiving. Some of our members also performed at Worldfest in No-

vember. In December, we also volunteered at Radio M.A.S.H. While there, we collected, sorted, and filled Christmas orders for those who are less fortunate, and we also got to be on the local radio station (KORA). We had our annual Christmas meal and program, too. Both were well attended. Some of the members also caroled and participated in the

“live nativity” for Snook Brethren Church. As we head into the new year, we look forward to many more opportunites to serve our community. We are wishing everyone a blessed and happy new year. Fraternally submitted, Zachary Shelfer, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club readies Youth Club meets for chili/catfish Saturday, Jan. 23 supper Dear Members,

Dear Readers, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and New Year’s Day. I’d like to thank all the youth club members who helped out with our volunteer project a few days before Christmas. It looked like the older folks really enjoyed this. Our next big project will be the chili/catfish supper to be held on Friday, February 19. I hope everyone can come by that evening for a warm meal and some fun and games. Regards, Chris Zavodny, Reporter —SPJST—

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010. We will meet at Shankz miniature black light golf by 9:45 a.m. There is only one course, and we are limited on time. Our start time is 10 a.m. Shankz is located at 3091 College Park Drive in The Woodlands - (936) 273-4569. The easiest way to go is to take I-45 North and exit SH 242. Make a left under the freeway on SH 242. Then, make a left at the second light. I think it’s called Montgomery Street. (It is directly across from Lonestar College.) You will see the sign for Shankz. Once we see how many people attend, we will see where we will hold our meeting. If they have room there, we will have it there. But if not, we might have to relocate. I hope to see you there! The School of Driving

After years and years of holding out, and scrounging lifts from my parents, I finally took the plunge and decided to learn how to drive. This was something I had already flirted with in my native Scotland.

BROTHERHOOD

20.leden.2010

But alas, I had made no more progress than locating where my mirrors were and stalling my way slowly around a country cul-de-sac or two. My mother has a conspiracy theory that British driving instructors can at times be somewhat ponderous when it comes to actually teaching their students how to drive. My experiences at the hands of my full-throttle Czech instructor couldn’t be more different.

I have been told by Czech friends that what I have experienced in this country behind the wheel is very far from typical - and indeed a few have suggested that I might find a less highoctane instructor. But I am in turns quite enjoying, and waking up in cold sweats about, my action-packed lessons. The first one consisted of cruising (or rather jolting) around Prague's main transport hubs for a couple of hours, being screamed at not to steer 'like a girl' and crank it up a gear or two. I have been learning to drive in Czech, which is becoming progressively easier, now I am familiarized with the Czech phrases for 'get out of the way of that tram!' and 'that's a pedestrian crossing, you fool!', which it took me a couple of lessons to master. For a Brit, there is also the tricky notion of přednost z prava – giving way to those on the right, which is generally, but by no means always, denoted by a yellow square-shaped sign. I don't know that this concept even has a proper translation into English, so foreign is it to my fellow countrymen. I am trying to combat the ignore-itand-it-might-go-away approach that I have so far taken to this phenomenon. Hill starts were covered by our second lesson. And learning to edge right up to the person in front's bumper, in a really intimidating manner, was a basic requirement of my driving teacher's course. I have quickly become accustomed to the Czech for 'what do you think your doing, you idiot?', and 'are you blind?', alongside many other choice phrases favoured by my not-so-softly spoken teacher and directed at fellow motorists. This is all perhaps quite useful colloquial Czech to know, though I may quite justifiably fall victim to a road-rage attack in this country, should I ever reproduce any of it myself. Driving in downtown Prague is a million miles away from pootling about the backstreets of my native Scottish village. And as scary and chaotic as it is at rush hour, I really quite enjoy it. When behind the wheel, I am somewhat blinkered, unable to think beyond the next right or left turn, or one-way street. I am still not yet sure how people actually manage to get from A to B without someone telling them the next turn-off they need to make, or the next lane that they need to shift into. But from what I can see of the city around me on such occasions, well, for a start it looks great, with all of the

Page 29

twinkling lights and billboards – some instructive, some downright distracting. And the angle that you see the city from is so very, very different - on those rare occasions that I think about anything other than my white knuckles clinging to the steering wheel, I think about how strange and good Prague looks from three feet off the ground. Still, it remains to be seen whether I will ever actually be able to join the ranks of Prague's fully-fledged drivers, or whether the scary boy-racer techniques I have been picking up from my rubber-burning instructor will stall my plans to whizz about Prague and beyond. — Rosie Johnston
