Vestnik Valentines

Remember to send your special someone a valentine in the Vestnik. The deadline is Monday, February 1. See the form on page 12 of this week’s Vestnik. Send it to us today!

Lodge 160, San Angelo Visit David and I had the pleasure of visiting Lodge 160, San Angelo’s annual meeting last Sunday, January 10. The meal was absolutely delicious, and the fellowship was great. I really enjoyed seeing several past youth club members who are now almost adults. I have so many fond memories as a youth club member competing in Youth Achievement Days with Lodge 160 youth. Then, as past State Youth Director, I so much enjoyed visiting the Wall/San Angelo area for events and attending District Four camps. Oh, the memories! Lodge 160’s youth club was one of the biggest in the state with so many extremely talented youth who would win award after award at State YAD. At the meeting on January 10, I spoke with several of the leaders of Lodge 160. They are very much interested in starting the youth club again. If anyone is interested in making a difference to children in the Wall area, please contact Lodge 160 President Dewyan Weise at (325) 651-8550. Serving as youth leader is a very heartwarming and rewarding opportunity. The youth — and parents — whose lives you touch never forget you. And, Lodge 160 officers and members, thanks so much for the warm hospitality at your annual meeting and dinner. It was great! Thanks, Leonard! Thanks to Supreme Lodge Secre-

tary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska for sharing such useful information: Here’s a number worth putting in your cell phone or your home phone speed dial: 1-800-goog411 or 1-800466-4411. This is an awesome service from Google, and it’s free — great when you are on the road. Don’t waste your money on information calls and don’t waste your time manually dialing the number. You are driving along in your car and you need to call the golf course and you don’t know the number. You hit the speed dial for information that you have programmed (1-800-goog411). The voice at the other end says, “Say the name of the business and the city and state.” You say, “Firewheel Golf Course, Garland, Texas.” He says, “Connecting,” and Firewheel answers the phone. How great is that? This is nationwide, and it is absolutely free! This works on both cell and landline phones.

Member Services Directory At their quarterly meeting held last week, the SPJST Supreme Lodge approved the Publication Committee’s recommendation to print a member services directory in late spring in lieu of a regular Vestnik. So if you have a business that you would like to promote, send us your business card. The member’s name/owner on the card must be an SPJST member. See next week’s Vestnik for complete details.

No Future In It John: “I don’t think Steve is going to make it as a speaker.” Ed: “Why?” John: “Because yesterday, when he asked if they could hear him in the back, and the answer was no, everyone in the front moved to the back.” —SPJST—

District News

State Field Representative Excited About 2010

Dear Districts One, Two and Five Sales Agents, A new year and a new decade for SPJST has begun. I am sure it will be one of many challenges, successes and even failures. We have to accept our shortcomings and learn from those mistakes and improve on them. Where we have met success, we need to duplicate it as often as possible. We did not issue the total number of applications for SPJST we had set as a goal for 2009. There is some good news from 2009 even though we were short by a few applications. We did have a net gain for the lodges on the Lodge Incentive Report which means that lapses have decreased in the Society. Of course, there is always room for improvement. I would like to congratulate Districts One, Two, and Five for each one having growth in their districts. SPJST enjoyed a growth of 467 applications this year. District Five had a growth of 45; District One had a growth of 70; and District Two had an amazing 252! Way to go, District Two. You had more than half of the growth the entire Society enjoyed. So hats off to you for not only writing business, but keeping the business that you wrote. I would like to pass on to District Two additional congratulations for

being the only district that experienced a positive growth over 2008’s accomplishments. We had a growth of 14.17 percent in certificates issued with a total of 282. In the category of insurance face amount issued, we had a growth of 21.66 percent for a total of $12,663,532. We did not have growth in premium income over last year (none of the districts did); however, we did have a very good year. We had $145,000; District Four had $148,000; and District Seven had $153,000. The first of the year I established a goal of $130,000 for the district, and we surpassed that. So again, great job and let’s continue the good work. Please give me a call at the Home Office or on my mobile or email me if there is anything I can be of service to you—whether it is to conserve business or close new sales or maybe just to talk about the string of fish you caught (better invite me next time)! Really and truly, I am looking forward to a great 2010 and am ready to just get it going. Good luck and good sales! Fraternally, Hiram Dixon FICF, LUTCF, CFFM State Field Representative —SPJST—

and six visitors present. The secretary and treasurer gave their reports and were approved as read. Vice President Scott Brandon gave us a report on the upcoming SPJST-sponsored events. February 6 will be the State Tarok Tournament at Lodge 6, Cottonwood and March 6 is the State Straight Domino Tournament at Lodge 47, Seaton. In old business, we now have a new lock on the front door of the building. Under new business, we discussed the annual Hee-Haw show to be held in our building. The show is the main fundraiser for the local fire department. It is an event we all look forward to each year. It is very entertaining. Sandie Fischer will have her food booth with a nice assortment of delicious snack foods for sale. So plan on eating your evening meal before the show or during the show. So make sure you plan to attend on January 29. There will be only one show this year. The lodge plans to take part in Join Hands Day again this year. Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek were two of our guests. We had Brother Frank install new officers for 2010. The secretary mentioned that we gained two new members in December and have two more taking physicals in order to join so we are excited about that. We want to thank President Williams for working so diligently to keep the water pipes from freezing during this last severe cold spell which was the coldest in 20 years according to the weather news. We appreciate so

Officers were installed by District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom, motions were made to make $100 donations to the Red Cross for the Haiti earthquake victims and to the food bank. Motions were made by Jonathon Gonzalez and Mike Ahlstrom, respectively. Both were seconded and carried. After the meeting was adjourned, all sets of books were audited, and refreshments were served by Franklin and Lois Elles. Now we’re going back to December 10—our Christmas social. We had a great crowd . . . 42 attended and everyone had a great time! The ham, fried turkey, and tamales were awesome! Thanks to Mike Ahlstrom for preparing the ham and turkey and to Kathy and Mary Tijerina for the homemade tamales! We had so many side dishes, it was impossible to taste everything. But, we all gave it our best shot! Mary Tijerina purchased the poinsettias that were used for table decorations as well as for door prizes. Thank you, Mary. They were beautiful. And, a big thanks to Al Haisler (Mr. Music Man himself!) who brought his collection of Christmas CDs. Al got a break from playing his accordion that night, but he pitched in and became “photographer of the evening” . . . hmmmm . . . was it his photography skills or my camera that

And then - as if he hadn’t already done enough, Al and Kay took the food items to VCAM the day after the party! Thanks to everyone who attended and helped. I truly think it was the best Christmas social—ever! It could have only been better if Evelyn Horelka had been there. Evelyn was home recouping from surgery, but Alfred, Jill, Chaston, Callee, Connor and Clare were there, and we sent a plate home with them for her to enjoy. We wish you a speedy recovery Evelyn. Birthday Club of Lodge 88 Houston

The January 13, 2010, meeting started at 11:10 a.m. by President Zajicek with the Pledge of Allegiance by Ernest Anders and a prayer by Helen Hegwood. Secretary Bette Hurta had roll call with 11 members present. She also read the minutes from the December 2009 meeting. No changes were made. We will have fried chicken in February. Ladies will bring vegetables. Cakes will be brought by Helen Hegwood, Almeida Bravenec, and Mary Krippner. Dixie Raskin will bring muffins. Ticket chairman Margie Anders is doing a good job. Treasurer Edna Wehring, you are doing a good job. Thanks! Sick members are Lowrina Lindemann, Flo Orsag, and Alice Bily. Ladies ge well soon. We miss you all in the meetings. There was a discussion about merging with the Men’s Club. This is my opinion: The men should take care of their jobs, and we, ladies, will take care of our business. It has been doing good all this time. But we will meet with them next month February 10 at 10 a.m. at Lodge 88, Houston. Calcutta was won by Helen Hegwood, Louise Jacob, Margie Anders, and myself Evelyn. There were no birthdays in January. A prayer was led by Helen Hegwood, and we ate. Respectfully, Evelyn Zajicek —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The Fort Worth Friendship Club met on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for the monthly meeting with 35 members present. Due to the absence of the president, the meeting was called to order by Vice President Betty Krenek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Joe Kozel was thanked for the wonderful music before the meeting, and Betty read a prayer titled “Time” which was enjoyed by all. It was so nice to have Monalee Hattendorf back

with us after a few months absence. She was looking great. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Notes were read from Father Anthony thanking the Club for his monetary Christmas gift, and from St. Thomas Food Bank for the food donation. With the donations from our members, President Mary Ann and Faith Lindeau were able to purchase 240 cans of green beans, 240 cans of corn, and 40 packages of hot dogs and 100-plus cans of tuna. According to their notes, the pantry was in great need of this food. Stanley Krenek handled the 50/50 dollar game. Winners were Camille Bolcer and Joe Kozel. Door prizes were brought by Anna Johnson and Rosie Steinman. Lucky winners were Tom Konen and Betty Landsfeld. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to celebrants Jewel Addison, Monalee Hattendorf, Lillie Kosarek, Betty Landsfeld, Kitty Rippin, Lois Smith, and Darlene Tompkins. January hostesses Dotty Herek, Kitty Rippin, and Mary Windham were thanked for the great job that they did. Rose Ann Spann assisted in table decorations - a winter snow scene on each table. Katherine Ormsbee was surprised with a monetary gift for so faithfully picking up the fried chicken each month for the luncheons.

Libbie Vrla showed the Christmas card that she received from Vestnik Editor Melanie, and everyone enjoyed the photos. February hostesses will be Anna Marie Moncrief, Katherine Ormsbee, and Agnes Reznicek. After the meeting adjourned, grace was said, and everyone enjoyed the fried chicken luncheon along with so many other wonderful dishes. Following, games were played, and a good time was had by all.

News Lydia Alholm is a new proud greatgrandma to Cole Kemper Alholm born on December 8, 2009, to grandson and wife Daniel and Brooke Alholm of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. It is so sad that they live so far away, and Lydia can’t just run over to visit. Daniel is Lydia’s middle grandson, is an attorney in Chicago, and the one who followed in the footsteps of his dad, the late Tony Alholm. We missed several of our faithful members this month. Willie Mae Becan’s heating system went out, and she was having repairs made; Helen Skrasek’s apartment was flooded, and she was busy moving back home after a week’s stay with Gary and Debbie Skrasek. Hopefully, she will enjoy the new paint job and her new carpeting! Rosie Steinman was invited to ride the SPJST Float on New Year’s Day in the parade downtown Dallas. Don’t you know that she enjoyed that!

Tracy Horn reports that her granddaughter Patricia Giffiths had a stroke on Christmas Eve morning, but is now gradually getting the feeling back in her left hand and fingers. Patricia, we wish you a complete and speedy recovery. Anna Johnson spent several days sitting in front of her kitchen stove as her electricity kept going off and then on. She said it was cold, but she put another quilt on her bed, wore her heavy robe and sat in front of the kitchen stove. All is well now, thank goodness. Get will wishes still go out to Virgie Valentine who still suffers from shingles. You’ve been missed. Get well soon. The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 3. Stay well, warm, and see you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

District Six youth plan February 20 bowling social

Hello, District Six Youth Leaders and Youth! I hope you all had a great Christmas and now on to the new year! I have planned a District Six outing for this quarter on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at El Campo Bowling Center from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The active youth in the SPJST Youth Program will be entitled to two games of bowling and a meal. I will need for you to RSVP to me by February 15 as to how many will be attending so the bowling center can have a count on how many lanes to hold for us. There may be other parties going on at the same time. Each youth may bring a guest if he/she pleases, but it will be at the guest’s cost. The bowling center will give guests the same discount price as

they are giving us for the youth club members. That also applies for any parents who would like to bowl and eat. The cost is $7.50. If any of you have questions, please feel free to call me (979) 543-7120 or email lbubela@warpspeed1.net. Fraternally, Lisa Bubela District Six Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Congratulations to Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club member Michael Hoelscher who won the Gold Medal Award for his art picture that will be on display during this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He was the only student from his school to receive the award. Michael is the son of State Youth Director John Hoelscher and wife Lisa and grandson of Bobby and Alice Hoelscher of Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Dear Readers, I had a good Christmas! We had a party at school. I got to wear my PJs and got to bring pillows and blankets. We ate breakfast foods then we watched Polar Express. I like that movie, but I have seen it too many times because it is my little brother’s favorite movie.

For Christmas, I got a lot of presents. From Santa, I got a horse for my American Girl doll and some bendaroos. I hope you are having a good new year. I am. Sincerely, Hanna Slovak, age 7 —SPJST—

The Four Corners of the Czech Republic Part 1: The Bohemian Forest

Borderlands are fascinating areas where cultures either meet and intermingle, or in some cases are cordoned off to coldly stare at one another. The Czech/German/Austrian tri-border has experienced both. Over the last century, it went from being an imaginary line through the woods to a literal Iron Curtain and back again. What’s emerging here today is a cross-cultural region deep in the Bohemian Forest National Park.

While the Austrians and Germans refer to the park by its location, as the Bohemian or Bavarian Forest respectively, the Czechs call it “Šumava” after an old Slavonic word for dense forest that today evokes the rustling of leaves. The three countries share the woods from a point on Trojmezná hora, or “three-border mountain”, and their good cooperation in managing the area is what has kept the Bohemian Forest a national treasure on all sides of the tri-border. Michal Valenta handles international relations for the Šumava National Park.

The area on the southern part then where the national park borders Austria is an isolated area of mountain spruce and this area is especially important for preserving the glacial lake at Plešná. The Šumava is the largest national park in the Czech Republic and most importantly, the only one where the protection of nature is possible on such a great, large area today. We have a large extent of areas which are not inhabited today due to developments after the Second World War, so there are large areas where it is possible to let nature be free, without intervention.”

Those developments after the Second World War were of course the expulsion of the ethnic German population and the building of the infamous border zone by the communist regime, a buffer of barbed-wire, lookout towers, surveillance roads and electric fences that marked the boundary the West and the so-called East for some 40 years, and made the Central European communist countries into a de facto prison. What villages remained in the no-go zone were dismantled so as to leave no cover to “escapees” and for four to ten kilometres into the Czech side of the border, the country was left to nature. “It’s a bit of a paradox because the main reason that the national park could be established was the existence of this protective belt along the border because a lot of areas could be preserved here in a state that was very close to nature. So the main populations of the most typical animals lived in these areas along the border.”

Šumava, photo: Martina Bílá

“We have the last remnants of Mountain Spruce forests, for example. We have a large area on the border to the German national park where we try to establish joint wilderness areas called “The Wild Heart of Europe.”

To say the Šumava is the end of civilization would be to overlook one deep mark of 18th century technological prowess etched into the ground here. The Schwarzenberg timber canal is a 60-km log flume constructed over the course of 33 years. One of the first of its kind, the canal crosses the Vltava hinterland to the Austrian waterways, breaking the continental divide and ultimately allowing a continuous stream of water from the Black Sea to the North Sea. In the tiny settlement of Jelení on the Schwarzenberg canal lives one Čestmír Hrbek, a general in the Czechoslovak army who bought an old gamekeeper’s lodge here 20 years ago and turned part of it into a small museum in honour of the great technical achievement. “The end of the 18th century was the age of industrialization, when factories were being built, people were moving from the villages to the cities for work and the cities grew tremendously, and they needed wood of all kinds. Wood for building, wood for burning, wood for furniture – in short, there was huge demand. And meanwhile, the resources in the south were running out, there were no more forests. Vienna was in the middle of a fuel crisis; another year or two and they would have all frozen to death, the Viennese. And just 100 kilometres from Vienna was the immense Bohemian wilderness, where wood was falling all over the ground and rotting in the mud. But no one knew how to get it down.”

Schwarzenbergs certainly had the wherewithal to solve just about any problem the era could pose, but even money can’t move mountains of trees without the smarts of someone like Josef Rosenauer, the Czech engineer who put the plan into action. “Rosenauer placed his bets on water. He decided that he would get the wood from here to the towns below by water, by rivers, via the Danube and the Vltava. And he would get it to the rivers by water as well. And since there was no natural waterway to the rivers, not even a creek, he knew they would have to build one.”

Today, people from all sides of the border come to wonder at their shared history in the mossy stone beds and beautiful neo-Renaissance tunnels of the canal. Over a lunch of fresh mountain trout in the frontier town of Nová Pec I had the good fortune of meeting Austrian artist Joachim Eckl and his wife Joanna, for whom visiting the Czech side of the border is an important custom.

“We try to come every other week.” And why? “Because we feel very linked to this land and to this area because our relatives and our family, part of it comes from Bohemia, which used to be one big culture here. And after the Iron Curtain the family was separated. We feel our roots here, and we think that the main duty for us now is to re-link again, that we find common ground again. We have to learn the language also, because our parents didn’t speak any Czech, but our grandparents - their main language was Czech.”

So have you learned some Czech? “Only very little. But we hope that our children will connect better than we do.” And do you have any special attraction to the Czech Republic? “No, I like the countryside and to come here and see how they live here. It’s good that it’s open again and that we can go over and see what’s going on here and we didn’t do this 20 years ago – or even 10 years ago. It’s about discovery, and I like it.” Are there any benefits to living close to the German border for Austrians? Do you ever go to Germany?

Šumava, photo: www.czechtourism.com

“Sure we go to Germany often, but I think the main difference is that in Germany we feel that everything is very similar to Austria. And in the Czech Republic in the 50 years of the communist government here a lot of things developed differently. And in my opinion the people here have the chance now to learn from the mistakes we have made over the last 50 years. The Czech culture . . . around 1900 it was the Switzerland of Europe, with the industrialization here, the iron industry and the glass industry, this was

Page 19

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

all very highly developed here in the Czech Republic. And now, we have to watch and learn from the Czechs, how they are handling the situation here now. I think it should be a positive exchange.”

Living right beneath the real Iron Curtain and experiencing the whole of the region since then inspired Mr. Eckl to undertake an interesting project on the market square in the Austrian town of Aigen - a tangible display of regional unity among the peoples who have shared this landscape across three countries and for many, many hundreds of years. “The Bohemian Woods cover an area in Germany, in Austria, and in Bohemia – or the Czech Republic. And I think that the connection and the relationship to the land will make us find common ground again, because we have a common origin here. So we did was, we brought 40 square metres of land from the Bohemian woods here to Austria, from those in Germany we also brought an ‘island’ of 40 square metres and also another 5 islands from the Bohemian woods in Austria, and we tried to let them grow together again. It’s a symbolic thing. It has all been based on the participation of the people here: in Germany, in Austria, and in the Czech Republic. And I think it is quite a nice symbol, a nice picture of how we can find common ground again.” — Christian Falvey

Czech Heritage Society offers scholarship

The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is accepting applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship. The $500 stipend was established in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, who died in 1996. Peter was a retired businessman and a trustee of the Czech Heritage Society. Following the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, he was instrumental in reestablishing relationships between the Czechs of Texas and the Old Country. The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior to help further his or her education. As part of their application, students will write a 300word essay on either of two topics. The topics are: “A Family Member Who Represents Czech Heritage” or “A Family Member who Contributed to the Czech Heritage in the United States.” In addition, a high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, 200-word autobiography, a 100word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or at the university, list of 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture, and a cover sheet including the student’s name, address, phone number, and high school's name, address and phone number. Students do not have to be associated with the Czech Heritage Society or be of Czech origin to apply. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas was founded in 1982 with the purpose of preserving and promoting Czech heritage in the state. The deadline for accepting scholarship applications for the Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship is February 28, 2010. Send your application to The Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship, 3311 Carolina Way, Richmond, TX 77406. The application information is also available on our website at czechheritage.org. Daniel and Norma Mares speak at BVCHS meeting

Submitted by Lou Zaeske Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society President

The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) held its first meeting in 2010 on Tuesday evening, January 12, at C & J Bar-B-Que in Bryan, Texas. Over 30 members and guests attended. After dinner, a brief BVCHS business meeting was held. Then, at 7 p.m. our guest speakers, Daniel and Norma Máreš of Temple, Texas, presented a very interesting program about the eight trips they have made to Czechoslovakia and/or the Czech Republic. Their first three trips were in 1986, 1988, and 1989, before the collapse of the “Iron Curtain” in eastern Europe and the “Velvet Revolution” in Czechoslovakia. Their five (5) more recent trips in 1990, 1992, 1994, 2004, and most recently in 2009, were after the “Velvet Divorce” between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. Dan and Norma are both native Texans of Czech and Moravian descent. Their presentation was very interesting as they gave their Texas Czech view of how things have changed in the Czech Republic as it has once again become a free-enterprise democracy. One of the most touching experiences that Dan and Norma shared with us was when they were in Prague during July 1990 to study the Czech Lan-

guage at Charles University. They described how surprised they were on July 4 to see so many old 48-star United States flags, with the white stripes yellowed by age, that appeared outside of the windows of many people’s homes. July 4, 1990, was the first time, since the collapse of the “Iron Curtain” in eastern Europe, that the Czechs would dare to celebrate July 4, United States Independence Day. When Dan and Norma asked where all of these old 48-star United States flags with the yellowed white stripes came from, they were told that the United States troops gave out these United States flags in 1945 when they liberated Prague from the Nazis. They were told that these old 48-star United States flags had been hidden away all of that time in places like within the walls of people’s homes, etc. Then, we were all surprised when one of our BVCHS members, Frank Kočman spoke up to say that he was a young private in Prague with General George Patton’s army in 1945 and remembered giving out United States flags to the Czech people. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Dan and Norma’s presentation. Dan and Norma Máreš are members of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—
