100 Percent SPJST Families We are proud of our loyal mem-
bers who have been part of SPJST for many generations. We are seeking to recognize 100 Percent SPJST Families with photos to be published in the Vestnik. Everyone in the photo must be an SPJST member and must be living at time of submission. Families will be categorized as: One Generation Just Starting Two Generations Moving on Up Three Generations Making the Leap Four Generations Reaching New Heights Five Generations The Ultimate Goal
All five generation families will be published on the front page of a future Vestnik issue. Mail your photo with names of individuals and lodge number(s) to: SPJST Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100
Photos and names can also be emailed to melaniez@vvm.com. And, if you have someone in your family who is not insured with SPJST, what a great opportunity to contact your local lodge sales agent to get your family member signed up. If you do not know your sales agent, please call the Home Office (800) 727-7578. We look forward to recognizing your 100 Percent SPJST Family in a future Vestnik!
Sincere Sympathy We extend sincere sympathy to the family of Monta Foster who passed away Tuesday, January 26. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 30. Monta served as the District Seven representative on the Finance Committee from 1972 to 2000. He also served as chairman and vice chairman for several years. He was a very active member of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. Monta was also active in many SPJST areas—as a sales agent, as a chaperone at several District Seven camps, and as a participant in many fraternal activities and state tournaments. He challenged delegates at the 2004 SPJST Convention to look into the structure of SPJST. He suggested that a committee be organized to study the current structure and for it to be discussed at the 2008 convention and decided upon in the 2012 convention. From this, the SPJST Special Structure Committee was established with 12 members who have examined the structure and bylaws of SPJST over the past three years—with more work to be done. Monta’s leadership and professionalism were unparalleled. He loved his family, and he loved SPJST. May he rest in peace. Spirit 2010 Launch David and I were excited to attend Karen Kaspar’s State Field Representative Spirit 2010 kickoff event in Taiton on Saturday, January 23. It was such a nice event with members and sales agents from Districts Five, Six, and Seven. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the spirit was SPJST. Great job, Karen, Leroy, and everyone else who made it happen! And, thanks for a fantastic day.

From the President’s Department Attention, Lodges with Buildings: Home Office to provide guidance on property tax exemption process
In 2009, the Texas Legislature enacted a change in the Property Tax Code that liberalized the property tax exemption for organizations engaged primarily in performing charitable functions. This change should have a significant and positive impact on SPJST lodges that maintain lodge buildings and property. Previously, Section 11.184 of the Property Tax Code did not allow for the exemption unless the exemption was adopted either: (1) by the governing body of the taxing unit; or
(2) by a favorable vote of a majority of the qualified voters of the taxing unit in a special election called by the governing body of a taxing unit.
As a result, many of our SPJST lodges — especially those in urban areas — were unable to secure an exemption from property taxes. The new
law simplifies the application procedure that lodges will need to follow. Please know that the SPJST President’s Office has been working with the Texas State Comptroller’s office on a packet of information that local lodges will need to complete in order to request the exemption. The packets are expected to be mailed from the Home Office next week — or as soon as the Comptroller’s office updates and releases the new 50-299 form (Application for Primarily Charitable Organization Property Tax Exemption). In the event that your lodge has already received the property tax exemption, it is not necessary for you to resubmit a report at this time. Your exemption is good for a period of five years from the date it was first extended. Please make sure that your lodge keeps up with this periodic filing procedure. Thank you for your attention to this item. —SPJST—
SPJST to officially announce Fort Hood Memorial Garden project at Killeen press conference
Like all casualties of war, the men and women whose lives were lost in Fort Hood, Texas, as a result of the November 5, 2009, shooting will not be forgotten. They will be mourned, and they will be remembered for their brave devotion and service to their country. A memorial garden will be constructed on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center to provide a lasting tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters. SPJST is spearheading the project in cooperation with the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. A press conference at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center to officially announce the project is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10 at 2 p.m. Initial plans for the memorial garden include a gazebo nestled among trees
outlining walkways in a serene, picturesque setting. Details will be forthcoming in the Vestnik. The Fort Hood Soldiers Memorial Garden will be made possible through the generous support and donations of businesses, public and private entities, schools, churches, youth groups and everyday men, women, boys and girls. The Fort Hood Soldiers Memorial Garden will be a living memorial to those who died and a testimony to the beauty that can be achieved when we work together. If you or your group is interested in contributing time, energy or monetary support to this effort, please contact the Home Office. Checks may be made payable to the Fort Hood Soldiers Memorial Garden. —SPJST—

On January 9, 2010, members from across the state gathered at Lodge 24, Cyclone to participate in the first SPJST state tournament of the new year. The tournament was hosted by members of Lodge 24 - Flag Hall, located just east of Temple. Although the temperature dropped to 8 degrees early that morning, it was not cold enough to keep domino players at home. Twenty-eight players braved the cold to share in the challenge, fellowship, and fraternalism. First place was captured by winning 12 games and losing only three. Second place was awarded to the player with 11 wins and four losses. Third and fourth place was a tie with 10 games won and five losses. The third place winner was determined by number of points scored with 124 points, and fourth place had 120 points. Prizes and trophies were awarded to the following players: 1st Place – Milton Peterson Lodge 6, Cottonwood 2nd Place – Frank Klinkovsky Lodge 47, Seaton 3rd Place – Margie Faltesek Lodge 48, Beyersville 4th Place – Gilbert Schiller Lodge 48, Beyersville
Thanks to Lodge 24, Cyclone for hosting the tournament. The members did an outstanding job preparing for the tournament. I would like to thank President Daniel Wilde and all the members who worked behind the scenes to make the tournament a success. Thanks to the kitchen crew for keeping the coffee pot on and for the kolaches everyone enjoyed. The wonderful stew and cornbread served at noon was excellent. With the cold temperature, the stew just hit the spot. I would like to thank the players who braved the cold and participated in the tournament. It all ended in a fraternal way. Happy Valentine’s Day – February 14 Each year in February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Although the tradition of St. Valentine began many years earlier, Americans probably began exchanging handmade valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass produced valentine cards in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Remember your loved ones on this day. We are here to help if you need assistance. Approximately 75 sales agents and guests from Districts Five, Six, and Seven kicked off Spirit 2010—SPJST’s new membership program—on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Taiton Community Center in New Taiton, Texas. The day’s events began with registration and fellowship at 2:30 p.m. All enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and snacks throughout the afternoon of chips, crackers, cheese dip, spinach dip, and shrimp dip. The snack table also included meat trays, cheese trays, fruit, kolaches, coffee, and tea. State Field Representative Karen Kaspar began the program at approximately 3:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer. Recognition of special guests followed including Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and wife Frances; District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom and wife Kathy; District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt and wife Dorothy; Field Operations Manager Philip McBee; State Field Representative Hiram Dixon; Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny and husband David Nauert; and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke and wife Colleen. SFR Kaspar continued the program with sharing
appreciation to all agents for their work toward the past Heritage ’09 year. The new year brings a new beginning, and highlights of the Spirit 2010 incentive program were shared and discussed. New year updates and decisions from the prior week’s SPJST Supreme Lodge meeting were presented to the agents by Vice President McBride and Directors Ahlstrom and Pflughaupt. Some of the information included upcoming new ratebooks, new contracts, the marketing program, and focusing on servicing current membership and quality business with 80 percent persistency on a 25-month basis. District sales agent appreciation dinners will also be held throughout the state. Field Operations Manager McBee shared with the agents to work within families to become members of SPJST and focus on referrals from them. SFR Hiram Dixon was introduced and is State Field Representative for the District Five agents as well as Districts One and Two. Vestnik Editor Zavodny discussed various communication areas for sales agents to be attentive to for updates and information. This includes the Vestnik, the Excellence newsletter, website, and mailouts from the Home Office.
State FAC Jenke noted to the agents various upcoming fraternal events across the state including the Sixth Annual Texas Fraternal Bowling Tournament on Saturday, March 27 in New Braunfels, Texas. Vice President McBride concluded the program with his appreciation for the agents’ dedication and commitment through the past year. He shared that SPJST is financially strong and is looking forward to a renewed Spirit 2010 upcoming year for all agents and SPJST. A dinner of fried fish, rice, green beans, pinto beans, and rolls was served at 6 p.m. After dinner, dessert was served, and SFR Kaspar presented some motivational stories from “Coffee Talk Motivation.” A big thank you was shared to everyone who was able to attend. Recognition and thank yous were given to the cooks and assistants for the day’s events: Chief Chefs Leroy Kaspar and Lenice Kaspar, Robert Kaspar, Thomas Kaspar, Karen and Ed Zapalac, and Sandra and Dennis McDonald. The evening ended with door prizes and a champagne toast to the new Spirit 2010 year. —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on activities
President Ray Nelson called the January 19, 2010, meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 17 members, one youth, and two guests present. The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. Teresa Anderson gave the treasurer’s report. There were no questions about the report. FAC Joyce Nelson gave a list of the upcoming events for SPJST, especially the scholarship program. All events are posted in the Vestnik. Mikhaila Nelson made 25 handmade gingerbread ornaments for Taylor Assisted Living residents. On December 26, the youth had an end-of-the-year outing. They went to a movie and saw “The Blindside”—a great and inspiring movie. The youth

Booster Club is interested in renting the hall. More information in needed. Ray Nelson will contact them for more information and get back to the membership. Evelyn had sent no get well cards or sympathy cards; everyone is healthy. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. Someone stole all the cans we had to sell a couple of months ago, so the lock has been changed. Charles thanked Johnny and Irene Vrabel for all the work they put into the Christmas dance and the New Year’s Eve dance. The building had a water leak. Charles thanked Johnny Vrabel, Charlie Wheeler, and Joe Mohney for helping repair of the leak. They saved the lodge probably $3,000 by doing the work and not hiring a plumber. Johnny Vrabel gave the trustee report. All trustees were present. Ray was in contact with the person who did our floor. He will do something about the floor when the weather gets hot. There was discussion about the Cowboy Church. We need better communication so that they do not use the hall when we use the hall. A special meeting was called on January12 about the water leak. Ray will call to get the location of the lines before we dig. The trustees decided that they will do the work to save the lodge money. Johnny Vrabel has a trencher and will be paid for the use of the trencher. The trencher was not used as a backhoe was needed. Charles Wilson, Charlie Wheeler, and Joe Mohney worked eight hours to get the work done and complete a temporary fix for the bar and back bathrooms. Charles Wilson and Johnny Vrabel did the final repairs on Monday, January 18. State FAC Chester Jenke talked about Join Hands Day and projects. Chester stated that the Corpus Christi getaway is planned again for August. They have 100 rooms blocked again if you can make plans to join the group for a great time. Chester reminded everyone to not fall for some of the scams going around. Do not give your personal, bank, or credit card information to anyone. Happy birthday to T.J. Anderson and Ray Nelson. We had a small crowd due to conflicts and communication. We will have more planning at our next meeting that will be the third week in February on the 21st at 4 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico, Texas. I hope you all can come and help plan our next year and try to get some of our meetings online and also try to get all members that belong to other lodges to join in. Also try to meet with members of the lodges that are trying to get more members like Brownwood and Goldthwaite to meet with us and help get more members. Norman M. John Madden’s Super Bowl Party Tips
(StatePoint) John Madden is a passionate man but nothing brings out the “BOOMS” or “BAMS” in him quite like the Super Bowl. Whether it is offering an honorary turkey leg to commemorate a great performance, or highlighting a local team’s tailgating rituals, Madden knows all about mixing food, fun and football. Fresh out of retirement a n d with the Super Bowl approaching, Madden is still talking John Madden is pasthe game as sionate about football he unveils and food. SPJST Education and Nature Center Directors meet at Cooper Farm

line in the NFL. The top five O-line finalists vying for this honor are the: Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans. Fans nationwide have been voting for their favorite offensive lines at www.MaddenProtectorsAward.com, and the winner will be announced on Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010, in South Florida in the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIV.
Powerful Protection Is Key Throughout his career, Madden has heralded the unsung heroes on an offensive line. He knows it’s the powerful and reliable protection up front from the offensive linemen that can make or break a game. Alongside his passion for the game, Madden has shared his love for a good tailgate spread in his cookbook, “John Madden’s Ultimate Tailgating.” Making the most of your Super Bowl party means enjoying the foods you love. NFL fans who want tough protection against frequent heartburn, or heartburn that occurs two or more days a week, can take a 14-day course of Prilosec OTC two weeks leading up to an event so they can enjoy both the game and the foods they love. And just like a solid left tackle protecting the quarterback’s blind side can swing a team’s fortune; these tips can make a difference with your Super Bowl party: Order Food Early It’s important to beat the rush. For example, local pizza delivery services will have many customers looking for game food, which can produce delays when it comes time to order. If ordering out, call to see if you can order in advance or at least get an idea of how long the wait will be.
Ask Guests About Preferences It might seem hard to believe, but not everyone chows down on pizza and wings during the big game. Considerate hosts ask guests in advance of food preferences. Everything from dietary regulations to food allergies can make certain foods a bad idea.
Get Festive It might not be the Fourth of July, but the Super Bowl is a national holiday. Invest in fun-loving party supplies like streamers, balloons and football-themed plates or cups. Little touches can remind guests that this is, after all, a party.

Consider a Mini-Fridge or Extra TV Those sudden beverage runs seem to always come at the most pivotal point in the game. By providing a mini-fridge stocked with drinks and snacks beside the television, you might save guests from missing a big play. Or provide a secondary television in the kitchen for anyone who has to leave to replenish everyone’s food and drinks. In the month of February, many SPJST youth clubs will take Valentine’s Day to heart, making valentines and giving them to friends, parents, grandparents, and residents of nursing homes. It’s a fun activity that many grown-ups also enjoy. Have you ever wondered, though, how the tradition of exchanging Valentines first started? We wondered about that, too, and surfed the web until we found an answer in the story:
My Name is Valentine
Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn’t like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn’t the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.
Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel.
Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favorite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.
feet as I used to be, I guess. I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.
One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh — because they know that love can’t be beaten! Source: http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/Saint-Valentine.aspx
Now, let’s have some fun! For the February Vestnik project, take some time to make a Valentine for someone special you know! And, while you’re doing it, make one — or more — that you can send me. In turn, I’ll collect One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the cou- them and deliver them to residents of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in ple I was marrying escaped in time. Leaders-in-Training Retreat Leaders-in-Training Retreat is set for Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13 at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm. This will be an opportunity for all the leaders-in-training (LITs) to acquire some great skills, including learning what their responsibilities are at camp. The new cabins will be ready, so look forward to the full weekend LIT retreats coming back. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year. Who’s eligible to be a leader-intraining? LITs are active high schoolaged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and district youth counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT retreat after completing a leader-in-training application. Forms are available from youth leaders and district youth counselors.
100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all youth club members who have been sending in their donations for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. This year’s drive ends on March 31. Youth club members receive two merit points for donations of $2 or more. For donating $5 or more, youth club members also receive a certificate of participation.

Eye Glasses and Hearing Aid Donations Please keep those old eye glasses and hearing aid donations coming in. This is an ongoing collection effort that we have been doing for some time now. The reconditioned eyewear is redistributed throughout the United States and the world, and the repairable cell phones are given to various care shelters throughout the county.
Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House The continuing support of sending pull tabs in for the Ronald McDonald House is also a worthy charity that we have been supporting. They use the money from the sale of the canned drink tabs to buy gas for their transportation vehicle and to buy much needed supplies for the house. I strongly encourage all of the SPJST youth clubs to save pull tabs for this worthy and ongoing project. Your

District Six youth set February 20 bowling social
Hello, District Six Youth Leaders and Youth! I have planned a District Six outing for this quarter on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at El Campo Bowling Center from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The active youth in the SPJST Youth Program will be entitled to two games of bowling and a meal. I will need for you to RSVP to me by Monday, February 15 as to how many will be attending so the bowling center can have a count on how many lanes to hold for us. There may be other parties going on at the same time. Each youth may bring a guest if he/she pleases, but it will be at the guest’s cost. The bowling center will give guests the same discount price as they are giving us for the youth club members. That also applies for any

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club plans chili dinner
Hey, everyone! I hope this letter finds you all in good health. We had 18 members present at our January meeting. We wished youth member Tyler Wilson a happy birthday! Since we have agreed to take over the hall kitchen for this year, we have created a sign up sheet for members to chair the kitchen each month. Kandace and Kody Stone have volunteered to take the kitchen in February. We have one dance in February which is Jerry Haisler on Saturday, February 27. We will need at least four adults helping the youth members cook and take money. If you would like to help the Stone family on Saturday, the 27th, contact either Donna Stone or me. We are still looking for volunteers for the months of March, May, June, July, August, September, November, and December.
Annual Chili Dinner Fundraiser Friday, February 19 We will be having our annual chili dinner fundraiser and membership drive on Friday, February 19 starting at 5 p.m. We will also serve fried catfish in observance of Lent. We will have the cake walk, country store, Plinko, ring pond, tic tac toe, and face painting. I will have sign up sheets at our next meeting as well as online. I would like for each family to bring one dessert, a silent or live auction item, and can goods for the country store. Please remember that this is one of our biggest fundraisers so it is important that you all participate. You will receive an additional email giving you an area to confirm your attendance and what you plan to bring. Edwin Pechal has agreed to prepare the chili for us, and the Danny and Michelle Porubsky will help cook the fish.
February 28—District Skate Party Our district skate party will be Sunday, February 28 at Skate Haven, located at 814 North 31st Street—just up the road from Temple High School. We will be meeting at 5 p.m. in the parking lot for a short meeting.

One last thing . . . I would like some pictures from the play that we did at the Christmas party. I did not get any at all, and I would like to put some in the Vestnik, so if you have some could you please email them to me at necconetta@sbcglobal.net or loan me your SD memory card and I can put them on my computer, or last resort, I can download them at the skating party onto the laptop. W he n To mo r r ow Starts W ithout Me
When tomorrow starts without me, and I am not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me, I know how much you love me as much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me, too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand, That Jesus came and called my name and took me by the hand. He said my place is ready in heaven far above, And that I have to leave behind all those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away a tear fell from my eye, For all my life I’d always thought it wasn’t my time to die. I had so much to live for and so much yet to do, It seems almost impossible that I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays— the good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared and all the fun we had. If I could have stayed for just a little while, I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realize that this could never be, For emptiness and memories would take the place of me. And when I thought of worldly things that I’d miss come tomorrow, I thought of you and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through Heaven’s gate and felt so much at home, As God looked down and smiled at me from His great golden throne. He said “This is eternity, And all I’ve promised you, Today, your life on earth is past, but here, it starts anew.”
“I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last, And since each day’s the same here there’s no longing for the past.” So when tomorrow starts without me don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of me I’m right here in your heart. — Anonymous —SPJST—

In Memory of Anda Erwin
Memorial services for Anda June Erwin, 69, of Lufkin were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, in Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with the Reverend Jacqueline Snarr officiating. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Carroway Funeral Anda Erwin Home. Mrs. Erwin passed away Tuesday, December 29 in a local hospital. She was born June 15, 1940, to the late Glen and Jamie Cordell Ash in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Erwin was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Hershel Lee Erwin. Mrs. Erwin worked for the Jefferson County Regional Crime Lab in Beaumont as a forensic lab technician for many years. She analyzed evidence submitted by law-enforcement agencies, made crime scenes, attended the FBI academy for training in photography and became very accomplished in her chosen field. Later, she moved to Lufkin with the love of her life, Hershel Erwin, when he retired from Houston as a Texas Department of Public Safety narcotics lieutenant. The couple remained in law enforcement, with Anda working for the Angelina County district attorney’s office and Hershel working for the sheriff’s office and teaching law-enforcement classes at Angelina College. Mrs. Erwin loved Lufkin, her family, friends of almost 25 years, her home, cooking, gardening, painting, photography, motorcycle riding, traveling, and ballroom dancing. She was a woman of many talents and capabilities, a very gentle woman, but not one with whom to be trifled. She recently received awards for her beautiful yard, where she spent many enjoyable hours toiling away on her three acres. This was a woman who could change the oil in her car, fix the plumbing, and sew an evening gown identical to one worn by Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Mrs. Erwin and her husband took many interesting trips with the CalTex motorcycle group to which they belonged. They covered much of Texas visiting lots of small towns like Fredericksburg, Boerne, Llano, and Mar-

ble Falls. Once they ventured as far as Canada. The couple loved Red River, New Mexico, and went there often. Later in life, one of Mrs. Erwin’s greatest joys was her relationship with close companion Joel Tower. They belonged to a dance club together, spent endless hours practicing and attending various galas and events where they would dance the night away. They also enjoyed traveling, cruising, and family gatherings. She was a wonderful friend and great companion to those fortunate enough to enjoy her friendship. As a friend, she was fiercely loyal, supportive, understanding and always able to lend a hand. Mrs. Erwin loved a good joke and funny stories where punch lines and hilarious endings gave rise to her amazing smile and laughter. Mrs. Erwin is survived by daughter Pam Nunnally of Lufkin; son Steve Rutledge of Beaumont; grandchildren Holly and Chase Nunnally; stepsons Steven Erwin and wife Cheryl of Dallas and Doug Erwin and wife Linda of Houston; step-grandchildren Shawn, Ryan, Shane, Weston, Andrew, and Katelyn Erwin; and special friend and companion Joel Tower of Lufkin. Pallbearers were Clyde Herrington, Jimmie Allison, Glenn Lenderman, Mack Coward, Steve Erwin, and Doug Erwin. Memorial contributions may be made to Keltys United Methodist Church, 508 McMullen Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or Hospice in the Pines, 116 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904. —SPJST—
In Memory of Sonya Farek
25
Sonya Farek passed from this earth early Sunday morning August 16, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Sonya Lynne Baker was born to Ruby Jewell and Carl Baker in El Paso, Texas, on March 31, 1937. She grew up in Sonya Farek Waco and attended Baylor University and a graphic arts school. On August 26, 1961, she married Don Farek at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in Waco. In 1962, they moved to Killeen where they raised their children Chris, Denise, and Tim. Sonya was a multi-talented person. Spirited, organized, and strong-willed with the courage to stand up for, and express, her opinion. Sonya enjoyed several hobbies. She was a skilled arts and crafts artisan, a painter, and an avid antique collector (but not an avid seller). While her children were growing up, Sonya was very involved in all of their activities. She was the “den mother” type for practically every activity her children were involved in, particularly at St. Joseph’s School. Sonya served on the school board, president of the Parent Teachers Council, and any and all of the various fundraising events and volunteer efforts that help keep such organizations afloat. Sonya was also active in the St. Joseph’s Church serving as president and longtime member of the Parish Council and as publicity chairman for many years of the church’s major fundraising event, the annual Fest-ofAll, a name that she coined. In addition to her efforts to help St. Joseph’s Church and School, Sonya was very active in the formation of a new garden club called the Seed and Weed Club. She served in all offices of the club. She also served as a district officer and judged shows throughout the state. Her floral arrangements won her awards both locally and statewide. Another passion of hers was the Beautify Killeen Campaign. One of her most memorable times came in 1967 when she traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept an award on behalf of the City of Killeen from the First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, for Killeen being recognized for its Clean-

est Town efforts. As president of Beautify Killeen, in 1994, she was instrumental in having Killeen designated as the first and only Buddy Poppy City by the National VFW. After her children were “out of the nest,” she turned her talents to working with her husband in their business, Cameo Homes, as the interior decorator. Drawing upon the talents honed in her hobbies, she was widely recognized for her ability to help Cameo Homes’ customers to beautifully decorate their homes. Her ability to arrange furniture and coordinate colors was an exceptional gift. One of her proudest accomplishments was taking an old abandoned house built in 1941 and restoring it in keeping with most of its original details and features. The house now serves as Cameo Homes’ office at 5311 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Killeen. Before illness robbed Sonya of her energy and vitality, she and her husband enjoyed traveling, particularly in Europe, visiting with good friends and playing whatever card game was vogue, attending business meetings in different cities and judging Parade of Homes events in various cities in Texas and the nation. Of all of Sonya’s many talents and accomplishments in her life, all took second billing to the pride and love she had for her children and four grandsons. The personal birthday cards and gifts she made are treasured memories. Sonya is survived by husband Don; children Chris and Carolyn Farek of Corpus Christi, Denise and Mike Fisher of Austin and Tim and Carol Farek of Belton; brother Jim Baker of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters Ruby Carroll Ali of Austin, Wanda Gorman of Moore, Oklahoma, and Adriel Holt of Fort Davis, Texas; and grandsons Gus and John Farek of Belton, Jacob Kellar of Corpus Christi, and Will Fisher of Austin. She was preceded in death by her parents. Sonya, for all the sorrow and longing that your passing has caused us, we take great comfort in knowing that the pain you have endured for 30 years has finally ceased. Your loving family, Don, Chris, Denise, Tim, Gus, John, Jacob and Will
Private funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Killeen. An informal celebration of Sonya’s life was held from 4 to 6 p.m.

Brazos Valley CHS donates to CEFT Submitted by Lou Zaeske BVCHS President
On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) held its annual meeting in the newly completed Library, Museum, and Archives Building at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange. The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) recognizes the important contribution that CEFT continues to make in preserving and promoting our unique Czech and Moravian cultural heritage in Texas. Therefore, at this CEFT annual meeting, BVCHS President Lou Zaeske presented CEFT President Woody Smith with a check for $500 given in support of the continuing mission of the CEFT. The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) was founded in 1954 and has strongly influenced the preservation of the widespread Czech and Moravian cultural heritage in Texas, including the teaching of the Czech language, as well as the promotion and preservation the rich Czech and Moravian musical tradition in both folk music and classical music. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain in eastern Europe in 1989, CEFT has aggressively pursued cultural exchange between Texans of Czech and Moravian heritage and the Czech Republic by establishing permanent endowments at three major universities in Texas. In 1991, CEFT established the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at the University of Texas (UT) in Austin to

foster the study of and research into Czech culture and history, as well as instruction in the Czech language. In 1999, CEFT permanently endowed the William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M University (TAMU) in College Station to foster graduate student exchange between the major universities in Moravia and Texas A&M. And, in 2005, CEFT established the endowment for the Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. The Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture fosters the study of and instruction in Czech and Moravian music, both Classical Music and Folk Music. This includes facilitating cultural exchange of both Classical Music and Folk Music performing groups between the Czech Republic and the Czech and Moravian communities in Texas. Currently, the Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture at UNT, in collaboration with CEFT, is sponsoring four full stage productions and a Texas tour of Bedřich Smetana’s most cherished work for the stage. This is Smetana’s opera entitled Prodaná nevěsta (“The Bartered Bride”), which is so popular that it is often considered the “Czech National Opera.” It is a delightful love story set to romantically folk-like melodies. This performance of Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride” is an experience that is well-suited for the whole family. On the weekends of February 26 to 28 and March 5 to 7, four full stage productions of this opera will be at the Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT Campus in Denton.
