Official Garden Announcement SPJST will officially announce
plans for the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden at a press conference on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, in the Special Events Room at Killeen Civic and Conference Center, located at 3601 South W S Young Drive in Killeen, Texas. Coffee/refreshments will be served at 1:30 p.m., and the press conference begins at 2 p.m. We cordially invite members, friends, and the media to attend. Presenters will include Connie Kuehl, Director of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center; Brian Vanicek, President of SPJST Fraternal Life Insurance; and Timothy Hancock, Killeen Mayor and Chairman of the Special Events Committee of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Plans for the project will be presented along with details on how businesses, schools, churches, youth groups, civic organizations, and interested men, women, boys and girls can get involved. Like all casualties of war, the men and women whose lives were lost in Fort Hood, Texas, as a result of the November 5, 2009, shooting will not be forgotten. They will be mourned, and they will be remembered for their brave devotion and service to their country. In the wake of this tragedy, we join hearts and hands in the planning and construction of a living memorial garden, honoring the lives that were lost that day. The Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden will be a living memorial to those who died and a testimony to the beauty that can be achieved when we work together.
Seeing a Miracle It’s been 10 years since Lodge 177, Academy Vice President Louis Driska experienced what some would call a miracle. On New Year’s Day in 2001, Louis, who was blind in one eye most of his life, woke up and could see just fine. In 1926, Louis’ eye was damaged in an accident. Louis’ parents rented a room in their home to a school teacher, Anton Noska. “I was two years and 10 months old,” Driska said in a feature story in the January 29, 2001, Temple Daily Telegram. “I was crawling on the porch while he was whittling a stick. I stood up and grabbed his shoulders with both my hands. “He grabbed me, because he thought I was going to fall. When he grabbed me, he had that knife in his hand and stabbed me in the (left) eye.” Driska did not visit a doctor because it was about 15 miles away, and he doesn’t recall if the family had a vehicle. So he went through life with the use of only one good eye—his right one. He never let that bother him as he lived a normal life. He was one happy, seeing man on New Year’s Day 2001—10 years ago! Vestnik Valentines This week’s Vestnik features 247 valentine greetings. Thanks to everyone who submitted a greeting, and special thanks to those who also sent funds to be donated to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. A total of $247 was raised through this project. Thank you, and Happy Valentine’s Day! —SPJST—

Texans should safely participate in 2010 U.S. Census By Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott
In March, census forms will be delivered to every residence in the United States. Participation in the 2010 Census is crucial to Texas’ future. The U.S. Constitution requires that the federal government conduct a population count every 10 years. Demographic data obtained during the census process ultimately determines the number of seats Texas gets in the U.S. House of Representatives, so it has a major impact on Texas’ representation in Washington. Additionally, this population data is used to calculate Texas’ share of $400 billion dollars in federal funding. These taxpayer dollars fund buildings, roads and services such as hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior cen-
ters and emergency medical care. For example, Census data determined the number of vaccines delivered to Texas cities during the H1N1 crisis. Under federal law, Census participation is mandatory for all Texas residents, whether they are citizens or noncitizens. Household data provided during the event is confidential. Census workers face unlawful disclosure penalties of up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000. Census forms will arrive in the mail by mid-March. Recipients should complete the form and return it immediately. No official census information will be collected via email, so participants should be cautious of any emails regarding the U.S. Census. These are fraudulent emails unlawfully seeking recipients’ personal information. Census workers will visit door-todoor in residential areas in order to verify certain Census information. Participants should always look for identification from Census takers before opening the door. Census Bureau employees will be clearly identified with a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Census takers will visit a home up to three times to record resident information. Every time a Census worker comes to the door, they will leave a door hanger containing a telephone number for the residents to call to schedule a visit when the resident is available. By conducting door-to-door checks, the Census Bureau is attempting to collect correct and accurate information. The 2010 Census forms will only contain 10 questions, including name, home address, and the number of people at the address. Census workers might also ask for a salary range, but participants can refuse to answer this question if they do not feel comfortable giving out that information. Census workers might also ask for basic financial information, but they will not ask for Social Security numbers, bank account or credit card numbers nor will they ask for any type of donations. For more information about the 2010 Census, participants should visit www.census.gov/2010census. Great Tips for Heart Health Month
(StatePoint) Considering that by February most people have forgotten their short-lived New Year’s resolutions, it’s a perfect time to observe Heart Health Month and make changes in your life. Since 1963, the month has been an opportunity to learn about combating heart and cardiovascular disease, which remains the country’s leading killer. With this in mind, a few helpful tips and some dedication can make a difference in living a healthier life now and extending your golden years. “Simply thinking positively will not get the job done,” says Joseph Piscatella, an authority on heart-healthy habits and best-selling author of 10 books, including the new “Positive Mind, Healthy Heart: Take Charge of Your Cardiac Health, One Day at a Time.” “You need to take action and keep on doing it in order to develop new habits,” he stresses. If you’re just starting out adopting new lifestyle choices to strengthen your heart, you first need to set realistic goals. By setting explicit, achievable goals, you’ll have an easier time adopting good habits. Unrealistic ex-
Page 11
pectations ultimately can do more harm than good. Once you get rolling, here are a few points to help guide you to better heart health: Think of Your Family “Take some time to think about your kids or grandkids,” says Piscatella. “They need you to lead by example.” Motivation sometimes can be difficult to muster when starting to make significant lifestyle changes. What better way to push yourself than to think about how it might benefit your family?
Forget Candy, Try Fruit Diet is a big part of enhancing heart strength. Eating only broccoli and carrots isn’t necessary, but remember that many snack foods are high in trans fats and calories. Substituting apples, bananas, and other fruits for fattier snack foods is a great way to kickstart your new healthy lifestyle. Try Walking We do it daily, but not all of us do it enough. You don’t necessarily need to hit the gym — simply dedicating a small block of the day to a pleasant walk can make a major difference in getting your heart pumping. Once you’re comfortable walking, consider

upgrading to a brisker pace. Eventually, you should feel a difference in your overall health.
No More Crash Diets The plight of dieters has been wellAccording to Pisdocumented. catella’s book, “Positive Mind, Healthy Heart,” 97 percent of crash dieters re-gain their weight and more within a year. This is particularly true of dieters attempting to drastically reduce daily calorie consumption. Simply choosing different types of foods and making gradual exercise changes is more sensible. Before beginning any exercise program, consult your doctor. With our flimsy New Year’s resolutions already in our rearview mirror, Heart Health Month couldn’t come at a better time. By adopting a few simple ideas starting in February, this year could turn out to be a major milestone for your heart. —SPJST—

I hear it howling the wild Texas wind It blows from the West and wants to come in Moaning and groaning pushing the pane it rants relentless from off the plain and calls to me in loud rough roars It wants to come in It’s pounding the door.
The sand piles up deposits of ore and makes a beach at my back door The silt piles up in waves of red the color of copper the weight of lead and buckets of brown are tossed and blown and the neighbor’s back yard is now my own.

Lodge 182 Falls County Youth Club ready for fun year
The youth had their first meeting today. We discussed many exciting things. We are looking forward to a lot of fun. We met at The Chicken Place at 4 p.m. Briauna led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mrs. Patsy installed new officers. I was elected reporter/secretary. Briauna was elected treasurer; Jasmine is the president; and Isaiah and Zacary were elected reporters also. My aunt Cheffon who is going to be the youth leader asked my mother Mary to be assistant youth leader. She has a lot of responsibility. She is the secretary for the adult lodge so I can learn a lot from her, but we will do our best to make Lodge 182 grow, and we will have fun doing it. Our next meeting is Sunday, February 21 at 3:30 p.m. at The Chicken Place in Marlin. We will be decorating Easter eggs for the spring meeting. We are looking forward to our Easter egg decoration and also the District Two Skating Party in February. Rodney Mozee Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—
George Washington: The man who refused to be king
We celebrate the birthday of George Washington on February 22. He was a surveyor and a soldier. A man of action during the Revolution and thereafter, Washington’s decisions and wisdom helped to create a new nation: The United States of America. From 1775, when the Continental Congress appointed him military commander of continental forces, he was the leader of the colonial struggle. He transformed an underfunded militia into a force that outwitted and defeated the greatest military power in the world. Washington led the Constitutional Convention and brought credibility to the new Constitution. As the country’s first president, he guarded the powers of the office. Thomas Jefferson said, “His integrity is pure, his justice the

most inflexible I have known, no motives of interest or consanguinity, or friendship or hatred being able to bias his decisions.” After the war, as was common in the 18th century, it was suggested that America should establish a monarchy and that Washington should be king. With the constitution and the war for freedom fresh in his mind, Washington immediately rejected the offer and demanded that it never be made again. —SPJST—
Lincoln: The great emancipator
After Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, seven slave states left the Union. Four more joined them when hostilities began between the North and South. Lincoln vowed to preserve the Union even if it meant war. It did, and a civil war then engulfed the nation as he enforced the laws of the United States. The war lasted more than four years with a staggering loss of American lives. In 1863, with the war in progress, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It freed slaves. At the same time, he urged black males to join the Union forces. By the

end of the war, nearly 200,000 African Americans had fought for the Union. He referred to them as being indispensable in the Union victory. Lincoln considered his presidential role to be unique in times of crisis. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to

preserve, protect and defend it. In pursuing victory, no President had ever exerted so much executive authority. In 1864, as an example of his limited personal ambitions, Lincoln refused to call off national elections, even if he might lose. He was solidly reelected. Abraham Lincoln was killed by an assassin’s bullet less than a week after the war ended. He left the nation a more perfect union. —SPJST—

2010 doubleheader: The Olympics and the World Cup
Sports fans have a big treat in 2010: The Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver that run from February 12 to 28 and the FIFA World Cup in South Africa four months later. The Olympics feature 86 events spanning seven sports around Vancouver and at the Whistle ski area, a two-hour drive north. According to the U.S. Olympic Committee

(USOC), ticket sales have been great, as you would expect with the Games right across the U.S. and Canadian border. The USOC says Americans received the largest allotment of tickets ever for the United States in a nonhosted Winter Games, but they wanted more. World Cup Soccer The second big event of 2010 is the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Hundreds of soccer teams worldwide compete for an opportunity to play in the World Cup.
The FIFA is dealing with the case of a win by France over Ireland in which the winning goal was improperly called. One problem is that a soccer field is 77,625 square-foot field is covered by only four officials, meaning each has 19,406 square feet to monitor. Each official runs about 12 miles per game. In the United States, the National Football League has a 57,600 squarefoot field, which is covered by seven officials. Each view 8,229 square feet. In the National Hockey League, the 17,000 square-foot rink is judged by

four officials who each watch over 4,250 square feet. In boxing, one official referees fighters in a 324 square-foot ring. The FIFA is in favor of adding more officials, but is against video replay. The 19th edition of the World Cup kicks off on June 11 in Johannesburg, South Africa. It will be winter there, but winters are generally mild, but temperatures can dip to about 28 degrees F at night. Players say they like the cool temperatures. —SPJST—

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884), who has long been regarded as the Father of Czech Music, sought inspiration for his work from the old folk songs and dances of his native Bohemia. This is especially true of his The Bartered Bride which premiered in 1866. Hailed as one of the greatest of all comic operas, The Bartered Bride is a delightful story of young love and the

triumph of true love set to Smetana’s hauntingly beautiful old-world melodies that continue to characterize the Czech musical heritage to this day. The action takes place in a typical 19th century village in the Czech countryside. Act I begins with the villagers gathering in the square, which has been colorfully decorated in celebration of the spring festival, and ends as the joyous townspeople, caught up in the festive mood, dance in a lively polka. The rest of the story evolves around the lovers, Maria and Jenik, and their clever schemes to outwit Maria’s parents, Krusina and Ludmila, who with the help of the village matchmaker, Kecal, have arranged for her marriage to Vasek, son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. To learn more about Smetana and his work, plan to attend the pre-performance lectures which will begin one hour before curtain time at each performance. In order to make the production as authentically Czech as possible, Dean James Scott arranged for Jiri Petrdlik, the noted young conductor of the National Opera Theater in Prague and of symphony orchestras in both Prague and Brno, to come to North Texas to coach faculty and students alike on the production of a Czech opera and on the intricacies of the Czech language. We have been extremely fortunate in our association with the University of North Texas. We enjoy a fine rapport with Dean Scott, his faculty, and staff who are as enthusiastic about the beauty and diversity of Czech music as any bred-in-the-bone Czech. They welcome CEFT’s suggestions and remain respectful of CEFT’s mission

and goals. This production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride bears witness to the success of that collaboration and will go down in history as the premier production of a Czech opera in the century-old history of the College of Music at UNT. We invite you to join us at any of the performances to savor the moment and to celebrate the significance of this milestone in the history of Czech music here in Texas and of its future at one of the most prestigious music schools in the nation. Please encourage your children and grandchildren to join you. It’s an experience wellsuited for the whole family. Anyone who has ever attended any of the many Czech festivals held annually across the state will feel right at home with The Bartered Bride. We would appreciate your help in publicizing this event. Please spread the word among your friends; send notices to your local newspapers; and contact the administrative officials and Parent-Teacher Associations in your neighboring schools so that a maximum number of students across the state might enjoy exposure to an authentic Czech production of Smetana’s lighthearted opera, a rare opportunity that is not likely to be repeated in the near future. In closing, we would like to thank each of you for your generous support of CEFT’s program at the University of North Texas and invite you to join us in raising yet another $500,000 for the CEFT Kostohryz endowment in order to expose an even greater number of students each year to the riches of the Czech cultural heritage and to send them into the world, for genera-
tions to come, as educators and performers with a deep abiding appreciation of Czech music and the lyrical beauty of the Czech language. We would be most grateful for your support. The students whose lives are touched by your generosity will be, too. Participation in the production of a Czech opera sung in the Czech language will add a new dimension to the musical education of students at UNT and a new language to their repertoire. Every dollar of your tax-deductible contribution will go directly to the CEFT Kostohryz endowment. CEFT is an all-volunteer organization. There are no administrative costs. Please send your check to: CEFT Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture c/o Tony Pustejovsky, Treasurer PO Box 744313 Dallas, Texas 75374-4313
Thank you for your kind attention and careful consideration. We hope to hear from you soon. We’re interested in your ideas and welcome your suggestions and active participation in CEFT’s work of promoting the study of the language, music, and culture of the Czech lands at institutions of higher learning across the state. Valentineʼs Day becoming more popular in the Czech Republic
By Coilin O’Connor www.radio.cz/en/article/50572 February 13, 2004
It’s that time of year again. Sunday, in case you didn’t know, is St. Valentine’s Day. Although the origins of this tradition are uncertain, it has long been customary for people in the AngloSaxon world to give their lovers a small token of appreciation such as flowers or cards on this day. In recent years, St. Valentine’s Day has also been establishing itself as a tradition in the Czech Republic. Although St. Valentine’s Day has been a tradition in places like Britain since the Middle Ages, it was practically non-existent in the Czech Republic less than a decade ago. Now, it is everywhere. From shops offering a
wide selection of special Valentine’s cards to restaurants advertising “romantic” dinners for two, it is hard not to be reminded that St. Valentine’s Day is around the corner, even though this “tradition” is only a few years old here. The main reason for this is presumably commercial, as businesses try to drum up sales during the quiet period between Christmas and Easter. Bohemia Flowers, one of Prague’s leading florists, has undoubtedly benefited from the fact that Czechs have taken so readily to St. Valentine’s Day. Nevertheless, Eva Lysakova, Bohemia Flowers’ Creative Project Manager, explains how she believes Valentine’s Day may have been introduced here for commercial reasons, but that Czechs were now beginning to get into the spirit of this tradition: “We think that it was mostly due to companies who first began pushing Valentine’s Day, because it’s primarily a holiday for giving, which means you can use it to sell something. But now I realize that — even among my friends — people are saying, ‘Well, you know, I don’t really care about Valentine’s Day, but I’m definitely going to do something little.’” So if Czechs have been more than happy to adopt this foreign tradition of giving their lovers flowers, cards or small gifts on St. Valentine’s Day, what do they actually give each other? Is it the same as everywhere else or do their valentines’ gifts have a particularly Czech theme? Robert Carter, the founder and owner of Bohemia Flowers, says that some presents are the same and some have a more local flavor: Robert Carter: “Twelve red roses is definitely the most popular product that we deliver. We also get a lot of additional orders. People will go on our website and ask for a dozen roses but also want a bottle of Bohemia Sekt — that’s very Czech — or they’ll request a box of chocolates to be delivered with the flowers.” RP: “So, for Czechs, flowers are not enough?”

Eva Lysakova (laughing): “Flowers are never enough!” Robert Carter: “But they’re a good start . . .” In the English-speaking countries where Valentine’s Day is well established, it is very traditional to add a small, poetic message to the flowers or card you send your lover. This message is usually instantly recognizable by its opening lines: “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue . . . ,” which are then usually followed by a humorous personalized epigram. I asked Eva Lysakova and Robert Carter if any similar “standard” valentine’s message was emerging in the Czech Republic: Eva Lysakova: “I don’t think so . . . ” Robert Carter: “I don't think so either. People are very individualistic about it. There’s certainly no cliché; it’s always something different.” Eva Lysakova: “Well if we looked into our orders and found the message part, I’m sure we’d find something really ‘interesting,’ but we wouldn’t do that . . .” Robert Carter (laughing): “It’s a very secretive thing, I guess . . . ” —SPJST— • • •
