Paws Across Texas Hats off to Lodge 91, Crosby members for their leadership and ini-
tiative to create a statewide pet food and donations drive for animal friends across the state of Texas. I talked with Lodge 91 President Will Locke and Secretary Vonda Smesny recently. I heard so much excitement about this project in their voices. It was absolutely inspiring. I love animals and try to visit shelters as often as possible. My only problem is I want to take every animal home with me! Lodge 91 is encouraging lodges and youth clubs during 2010 to collect pet food and donations and give them to your local animal shelter. Why not encourage each lodge and youth member at a future meeting to bring a sack of dog or cat food? Then, take it to your local animal shelter as an SPJST lodge or youth club. It’s a great community service project, and I know you will have an incredibly wonderful feeling for doing this. Who knows, you might even come home with a new furry, best friend who will love you unconditionally! Be sure to share your pictures with the Vestnik.
Oxymorons Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand? Why does “slow down” and “slow up” mean the same thing? Is it good if a vacuum really sucks? Why do “fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing? How come a “tug” boat pushes its barges? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game” when we are already there? Why are they called “stands” when they are made for sitting? Why do we say “after dark” when it really is “after light”? Why is “phonics” not spelled the way it sounds? If all the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting? How come “abbreviated” is such a long word? Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?
Election Day—March 2 Election Day in Texas is on Tuesday, March 2. Don’t forget to get out and let your voice be heard! —SPJST—

Lodge 91, Crosby Kicks Off Paws Across Texas
SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby proudly announces Paws Across Texas—a benefit to help pets and animals across Texas. SPJST lodges can help support animal shelters and veterinarian offices by soliciting food and money donations from the public and businesses in your community. Then, pick a shelter to help hungry and misfortunate animals to benefit. From January to December 2010,
we would like to see just how much food and money we can collect as a fraternal organization. Each lodge is asked to keep a count on how many pounds of food and how much money it collects. Turn these numbers in to your district fraternal activities coordinator who will notify the State FAC. The State FAC will tally a grand total at the end of the year. Let’s show the world how SPJST

Annie called me yesterday to make sure that we found all her St. Patrick’s Day decorations left over from last year. Annie, you and Harold will be missed. After the meeting adjourned, grace was said, and everyone enjoyed a fried chicken, klobase, and ham lunch with lots of other wonderful dishes. As I always say, we have the best cooks in Fort Worth in our Club. Following, games were played, and a good time was had by all.

ily of Dr. Helen Oujesky who recently died. Helen was a friend to several of our members. Lydia Alholm stated that she still recalls from years past that Helen and her family always sat in front of the Alholm family at St. Thomas Church every Sunday. Willie Mae Becan’s grandson Tracy Miller and Megan Walling were married in Hawaii on Christmas Day. The family held a reception at a ranch in Granbury where they celebrated, feasted, and danced with a group of 200 guests. Recently, Willie Mae’s son Jerry from San Antonio made a short trip to Fort Worth where he had dinner with Willie Mae, Bernard, and Penny; spent the night and had breakfast with his sister Jennifer and husband Don Miller; drove to Coppell to visit his other sister Madeline and husband Jim Myers where he had lunch; then it was back home to San Antonio. He sure covered a lot of territory, and Willie Mae certainly enjoyed his visit. And on February 1, Willie Mae became a great-grandmother for the seventh time to Madeline Louise LaChance. The baby’s parents are Emily and Chris LaChance. Joe Kozel and his accordion were missed as he was busy planning the music, along with Bob Liska of Dallas for the 100th anniversary of KJT Society No. 54 Fort Worth which will be celebrated on Saturday, February 27 at St. Thomas Church with a polka mass, reception, and dinner. Lydia made her monthly trip to WinStar recently, and she even surprised herself at her winnings on the quarter machine. It sounds like she did “good.” Helen and Debbie Skrasek, Pauline Morbitzer, and I enjoyed being guests of Lydia’s at the Artisan Theater to see the play “Barefoot in the Park.” It was most entertaining, and we had a grand time. Thanks, Lydia! On Tuesday, Lydia has invited us to a Mardi Gras at the Wellington along with Ed and Muriel Havran and Jimmy and Jo Reynolds who are her friends from Colleyville. This should be a fun luncheon party. Alicia Castillo stated that it is now six years since her cancer has gone into remission. Good for you. Our prayers go out to you that you continue to enjoy good health. Helen Skrasek had her hand all bandaged as she had trigger finger surgery. She reports that she is now doing good again. It was nice to have Rita Thomas back with us after a long absence. Rita had surgery early last year then her sis-

I got to measure and found a seven-inch accumulation on my patio table. Some areas had up to 10 or 12 inches. The good thing is that it did not freeze. The next morning, I only had a slush in the courtyard from the few neighbors’ cars that ventured out. The main streets were only wet.

Mary Ann and Joe went to Austin to help son-in-law David take care of two-year-old Madeline. I hear that Mary Ann and Joe enjoyed a few fun days with their granddaughter, and they did get to see the snow as they drove back home on Friday afternoon. The bad thing is that there was so much accumulation on the trees, branches broke and knocked the power lines down. My electricity went off at midnight on Thursday, and didn’t come back on until about 10:30 the next morning. I am one of the lucky ones as today, Sunday, there are still many without power. Joe and Mary Ann Kozel missed out on the snow day. Their daughter Diane had to go on a business trip so

Lots to Learn in Womenʼs History Month
(SPM Wire) With 155.8 million females in the United States, there is plenty that can be learned from women, especially considering they outnumber their male counterparts by four million. And with women outnumbering men two-to-one in the 85and-over age group, women's history certainly is relevant. All Americans can learn more about that history in March, which originally was established as National Women's History Week in 1981. That week later became a month. Learning about women's history can be particularly insightful today, an age in which women account for 55 percent of college students and 66 percent of women of voting age went to the polls in the 2008 presidential election, compared to 62 percent of men. —SPJST—

Fort Hood Garden
Continued from Page 1.
Events such as November 5 allow us to think and feel in different ways. SPJST State Field Representative Hiram Dixon was emotionally touched by the shooting. As a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran who served from 1969 to 1972, Hiram strongly related to the incident. Shortly after the shooting as Central Texas mourned, Hiram, who resides in nearby Harker Heights, sat in a Killeen restaurant eating lunch. “It just hit me that we have to do something to honor and remember these victims,” he said. “I work for a great fraternal, giving organization, and Fort Hood is just down the road from our SPJST Home Office in Temple.” Hiram continued thinking about what could be done, and he realized that 13 trees must be planted—one for each of the victims—plus a smaller one for one of the victim’s unborn child. He returned to the Home Office and shared his thoughts. After numerous phone calls and visits, the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden con-

Dear Readers, I went to the February meeting. We made valentine cards. I put “XOXO” on my valentine card with hearts. It snowed! I played in the snow. I made my own snowman. I loved playing with Mommy in the snow especially the snowball fight we had! I rode on the sled once, and that was enough for me. Mommy

We had big mountains of snow next to the house that fell from the roof. I walked on top of it. Hugs and kisses, Misty Dvorak, age 6 —SPJST—
Dear Vestnik Readers, We had our youth club meeting on February 7, 2010. We did our Vestnik projects and made valentine cards. We decorated valentines with different colors and hearts. We had lots of fun. Everyone helped work on the scrapbook for YAD. We had valentine snacks— heart cookies, pretzels, and soda. Betty gave all of us a Valentine gift. We love you, Betty! The moms and youth leaders got together and scheduled the next youth club meetings for the rest of the year. The next youth club meeting is Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
It snowed a lot at my house. We got 12 inches of snow. The snow was very hard to walk in. We had snowball fights and made snow angels and snowmen. Daddy even hooked up a sled to the four-wheeler. I went sledding in the pasture. I had to hold on tightly. Daddy was going fast. Snow and mud were flying everywhere! I wanted to do it again! Oh, I lost my shoe in the snow! Remember, youth club members, write in the Vestnik for merit points and to pay your youth club dues. Stay warm, April Dvorak, 9 Reporter —SPJST—

Spring craft ideas for all ages
Spring is a wonderful time to enjoy nature and outdoor activities — and be creative at the same time. All it takes is a little imagination, a few hours on a sunny spring afternoon, and some inexpensive materials, most of which can be found around the home. Here are a few suggestions to get those creative juices flowing:
Make a bird feeder. Take a medium-sized plastic water or soda bottle and make a half dozen -inch holes, evenly spaced, about 1 inch up from the bottom. Next, drill or poke a small hole through both sides of the bottle’s neck just below the screw top. Attach the bottle to the center of a pie tin with a hot glue gun. Fill it with birdseed and attach a string for hanging through the holes in the neck. Press spring flowers. Flowers can
VӖSTNÍK
be pressed by placing them between sheets of tissue paper, then cardboard on a flat surface under a couple of phone books and a brick or two. Allow them to “press” for about two weeks until they are completely dry. Dried flowers can be attached to most surfaces with white glue and the surface sealed with clear acrylic once the glue dries. Mix up a pot of potpourri. Start with a large bowl glass and add flowers the whole family gathers throughout the spring and summer — and even the fall. For more fragrance, add lavender, rosemary, mint leaves or rose oil. By the time the holiday season rolls around, the dried flowers can be crushed and made into sachets to be given as gifts. Sprout a seed farm. Loosely place potting soil in a glass container. Push just about any kind of seed into the soil, up against the side of the glass so it is still visible. Keep the soil wet, but not soggy and watch them sprout. See how many different kinds of seed you can grow. You can use dried beans, peas or
Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club: Valentines and Snow Fun!
Dear Readers, On Sunday, February 7, 2010, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club visited St. Joseph’s Residence. We visit every year around Valentine’s Day. We took flowers, and each youth member donated travel-size lotions. All of the kids performed a dance routine, and some recited Valentine’s Day poems. After the program, we gave out valen-
tine cards. The residents really liked the cards because they had cute animals on them. We will make sure to bring animal valentines again next year. February 11 was a very exciting day. It snowed all day and broke snowfall records. We had at least 10 inches of snow at my house! I have never seen that much snow before.
My family and I made snow people, a snow dachshund, and snow angels, and we had snowball fights. We also made two forts that we used for protection during the snowball fights. Everyone had a lot of fun. I hope it will snow like that again. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 11 —SPJST—

even popping corn from your own kitchen. Cultivate a living Easter basket. Why stuff an Easter basket with plastic grass when you can grow the real thing? A few weeks before Easter, line the inside of a medium or large Eastertype basket with plastic and add a few inches of damp, but not wet, potting soil. Place a very thin layer of whole wheat “berries” on top of the soil and spray them lightly a few times every day to keep the soil damp. (If it’s too wet, mold will form.) Over the next two weeks, watch as the basket fills up with beautiful green grass. Stop watering a few days before Easter and then fill the basket with holiday treats. (MS) —SPJST—

Getting kids to care about current events
(StatePoint) Getting kids interested in the world around them sometimes can be tough. While many parents have long been unsure how to properly address certain current events with their children, there’s no denying recent efforts to reach young people and expand the scope of their world. A number of outlets have worked to establish news sources for children, while President Obama made some waves this past September when he delivered an address aimed specifically at the nation’s children. Even TV pundit Bill O’Reilly wrote a book for children. With proper oversight and some good ideas, families can make current events fun for kids, ultimately expand-

ing their understanding of the world. “Children haven’t yet gotten jaded or apathetic. They want the world to be a better place and they believe they can help make it so,” says author and human rights activist Elizabeth Hankins, whose new book entitled “I Learned a New Word Today . . . Genocide” teaches children about a heavy global topic. “Once you learn of the misfortune of others, you won’t look the other way. This can help avoid fu-

ture mistakes that have continued to allow crimes against humanity.” Here are some ways to make learning about current events appealing to children:
Make it a Family Function: Combine quality family time with an opportunity to educate your children by coming together to watch the nightly news or read the local newspaper. While it’s important that parents filter the news slightly to make sure children aren’t exposed to content for which they might not be ready, it’s a great way for families to draw closer. Be sure to participate in a dialogue afterwards and encourage children to ask questions. Find Good Resources Online: A number of media outlets have established online portals where children can learn about current events. Companies like Nickelodeon, Time Magazine, the Washington Post, and Scholastic have created places where children can learn about the world. The U.S. House of Representatives even established “Kids in the House,” a Web Site where children can learn about America’s legislative branch. Check Your Library or Bookstore: There are a variety of books available today that take potentiallydifficult topics and explain them to
children in age-appropriate ways. Hankins’ novel, “I Learned a New Word Today... Genocide” is one such example for readers as young as 10, while Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” and Victoria London’s “Lucy and the Liberty Quilt” are other nice choices for kids. Start a Group and Become Active: There are many current events discussion groups in communities across the country where young people join to discuss issues. If you can’t find one in your community, consider starting one. By partnering with similar groups and even writing to your congressman or town officials, you can tap more directly into the places where policies take shape. Turn it into Games or Projects: Educators encourage families to make current events fun. While combing through the newspaper, children can compile a scrapbook or piece together a collage composed of articles that matter to them. Family and friends can come together to act out sketches based on current events. “Not all details of current events are suitable for young people, but by encouraging children to see what happens in the rest of the world and encouraging their curiosity, you might help shape a generation of well-read, influential individuals,” says Hankins. —SPJST—

In Memoriam
Expression of Sympathy
SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of ERNEST HASKOVEC, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2010, as a result of recent health challenges. Ernest was born April 15, 1925, to Frank J. and Mildred Laznovsky Haskovec in Ennis, Texas. He was a lifelong Ennis resident and a graduate of Ennis High School. On November 10, 1947, Ernest Haskovec he married Ann Marusak, with whom he shared 56 years until Ann’s passing in 2003. For many years, he and Ann were part owners of H&H Hardware along with his sister Dolfie and her husband Johnie Hrabina. However, his calling was the land, and Ernest made his living as a farmer-rancher. He held a lifelong dedication to nurturing the home-place that his family settled in the early 1900s. His passion was working the land using common sense, hard work, vision, and innovation as his guide. During his lifetime, with extended family nearby, he appreciated ties to the land and his heritage. From 1955 through 1998, Ernest served as a director of the Ellis-Prairie Soil and Water Conservation District – time further exemplifying his concern, respect, and stewardship towards nature. Additionally, in keeping with his Czech heritage, he was a lifelong member of the SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis where he contributed service and leadership through work as lodge president and insurance sales agent. Together, he and Ann found particular enjoyment in Czech music. Ernest was pre-deceased by wife Ann; parents; and sisters Wilma Nesuda and Dolfie Hrabina. He is survived by daughter Janice and husband Jerry Matthews of Austin; daughter Cynthia and husband Don McCallum of Mansfield; son Ronald and wife Karen (nee Fleming) of Ennis; and grandchildren Victoria McCallum of Washington D.C., John McCallum of Austin, Douglas
Haskovec and wife Laura (nee Roth) of Houston, Daniel Haskovec and fiance Brandi Parish, both of College Station, and David Haskovec of College Station. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 19 with a 7 p.m. rosary at the J.E. Keever Mortuary. Graveside services with final gathering and visitation among friends and family were at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 20 at the Myrtle Cemetery. Gifts in Ernest’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice. May the patriarch of our family rest in peace. A memorial has been made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Ernest Haskovec. With deepest sympathy, Betty Macalik Financial Secretary —SPJST—
Expression of Sympathy
SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of EMIL “BLACKIE” BROZEK, of Dallas, Texas, who passed away peacefully at home on February 7, 2010. The youngest of five children born to Czech immigrants Anton and Bessie Brozek, he was born on November 9, 1925, in a farmhouse near Ennis, Texas. After graduating from Ennis High School, he joined the United States Navy in 1943, Emil Brozek serving in the amphibious forces on Tarawa in the Marshall Islands. After his honorable discharge as a Boatswains Mate Third Class in 1945, he returned to Ennis and married his high school sweetheart, Margaret “Peggy” Harcrow on January 29, 1946. They relocated to Dallas in 1949 where he was employed at Lone Star Company. He retired after 25 years with Lone Star and began his second career with RVOS Farm Mutual Insurance Company. He began as a state adjustor in 1979 and served three terms as Vice President
from 1983 through 1995, at which time, he officially retired from the company. He continued to serve as RVOS Director of District Six for 10 years from 1996 through 2006. Blackie was a longtime member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church in Dallas. Blackie was dearly loved by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. He was a loving and generous man. His motto was taken from John Wayne, “A man’s gotta do, what a man’s gotta do.” Emil is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Charlie and Miro Brozek; sisters Mildred Patak and Georgia Brozek; and beloved wife of 57 years Peggy. He is survived by daughters and their spouses Shelley and Matt Payne, and Patti and Michael Stacey; grandchildren Lisa, Katie, and Scott Payne and Andrew Stacey. This opera is Smetana’s most cherished work for the stage, so popular that it is often considered the “Czech National Opera.” It is a delightful love story set to romantic, folk-like melodies. Through the singing, danc-

ing, and a traveling puppet circus, you will be transported back in time to the Czech countryside, willingly and effortlessly. It’s an experience that is well-suited for the whole family. The opera is sung in Czech with English supertitles and produced in collaboration with the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas and the Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture Fund (This is a full production with sets, costumes, lights, and UNT Symphony Orchestra).
