We Will Remember
SPJST joined with Killeen representatives on Friday, March 5 for an in-
formational meeting about the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. Lots of ideas were shared by those attending. Leila Hunt-Willingham, sister of SPC Jason Dean Hunt who died in the November 5 shooting, attended the meeting and spoke to us. Her words were very moving, and she praised the memorial idea. She said, “When I heard about this memorial, I emailed Mr. Vanicek and thanked him for even proposing such a place. I was upset recently when I couldn’t remember the name of one single person who was killed at Virginia Tech by a gunman in April of 2007. Of 32 people, I cannot remember one name. It saddens me because they suffered the same heinous act that my brother did. I do not want anyone to forget about November 5, 2009. I do not want anyone to forget JD Hunt or Michael Cahill, Eduardo Careveo, Justin DeCrow, John Gaffaney, Frederick Greene, Amy Krueger, Aaron Nemelka, Michael Pearson, Russell Seager, Francheska Valez and her unborn child, Jaunita Warman, Kham Xiong, and the thousands of others that were affected by November 5, 2009. “The memorial you are proposing means more to a ‘survivor’ than you may even realize. Sometimes funerals and cemeteries are filled with despair and bad memories, sadness and bitterness. To have a beautiful place to sit and reflect on the honorable lives of 13 incredible people would be an incredible honor not only to the victims, but to all who were impacted by November 5th.” Initial plans had the memorial garden to be constructed at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center; however, a sub-committee of the conference center’s Special Events Committee will be appointed to con-
tinue planning and to determine the best location for the garden. Those plans will be presented to the Special Events Committee, and its members will analyze and amend the plans if needed. Final plans will then be presented to the city council for approval. All of the details of the memorial are open to discussion. “We just want to make sure it happens,” Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek said during the meeting. S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Expansion Grand Opening Congratulations to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home on its Assisted Living expansion in Taylor. The grand opening is set for Thursday, March 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the facility. See the invitation on page 3. The new facility includes a spacious lobby and reception area. ‘Handhewn’ wood beams, a stone fireplace, and ‘wood’ flooring are designed to reflect the warmth and comfort of early Texas residences. Two new wings double the size of the existing S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living facility. On-site services needed to enhance the living of its residents include a country store, a library with internet services, a barber and beauty salon, a spa, and a chapel. The facility is designed to support a variety of resident indoor or outdoor activities, and opportunities for resident interaction are plentiful.
The Bartered Bride Begins Texas Tour We inadvertently omitted that the information Lynda Novak shared in the March 3 Vestnik on page 22 was from a letter written by Margaret Klecka. Thanks to Lynda for promoting The Bartered Bride and to Margaret for sharing the information. More about The Bartered Bride’s upcoming tour around Texas on pages 26 to 28. —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts seeks to preserve hall
President Douglas Williams called the meeting to order at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by one of our guests Regina Peevey, followed by a moment of silence in memory of our departed members. All officers were present. We had 12 members present and five visitors. The secretary and treasurer gave their reports which were approved as read. Vice President Scott Brandon gave us a report on all the upcoming SPJSTsponsored events including the District Two Spring Meeting on March 21 at Lodge 80, Holland. President Williams reported on two meetings he and several of our members met with Steph McDougal with McDougal Preservation, who is generously assisting us in applying for some different grants. We, ourselves, will need to have some fundraisers as well. These plans had been on hold until we received the historical marker. The main project is to replace the roof and the entire electrical system. We are now in the process of obtaining estimates on the roof replacement. We have one of the last octagon-shaped buildings. That is the main reason they are interested in helping us preserve it. The first thing we have to do is set up a special account at the bank. Frank Tomascik made the motion that we transfer $1,000 out of the savings account into this special account, and that Sandie Fischer and Dorothy Tomascik be given signature authority. This was seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried. President Williams also appointed a committee to work on this project which consists of Joe Kopriva, Jim Wallas, Scott Brandon, Arthur Peevey,
and Frank Tomascik. We will have to decide on some money-raising projects. We are considering memorial paver bricks as one project. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, we would appreciate it. We are planning to obtain a website where we can keep everyone posted on current events and happenings. Steph McDougal is contacting some architecure college students and have them prepare sketches on how we could upgrade the entrance to the lodge building. She also plans to meet with Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek to discuss these plans. Who knows? We might just put Lodge 15 on the map. Jim Wallace made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Hilda Burtis. Motion carried. Door prizes were awarded, and a delicious meal followed. Next Meeting—April 12 The next meeting will be April 12. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

Twelve certificates were awarded to those who caught a calf. The night was dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness in honor of Brenda Decker, Nadine Berger, Bea Riedel, Mary Riha, and Donna Esparza. Every committee member wore pink, and all of the students received a pink calf halter in honor of the night. S.A.L.E. has a rich tradition and history of stewardship to the community, agriculture industry and youth of Texas.
With a clear vision of the future, a successful past and continual dedication from over 5,000 volunteers, S.A.L.E. will continue to provide wholesome family entertainment and be a pillar of strength and support to the youth of Texas. This year, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo has committed $8.1 million to education. The amount represents scholarships, grants, endowments, junior livestock auctions, Calf Scramble program, and show premiums paid to youth in the state of Texas. This brings the total amount that the organization has committed since the inception of the Scholarship Fund in 1984 to over $96 million. Josef is an 11th grader who participates in Snook FFA. Old-time Easter Egg Dye
When it’s gettin’ time for Peter Cottontail to come hoppin’ down the bunny trail, gather dye makings from the garden, and spend a nice Saturday coloring eggs. Here’s the simple formula. Eggs 1 teaspoon of vinegar 2 1/2 cups of plant-dye material Water
Put the eggs in a single layer in a pan with just enough water to cover them completely. Add the vinegar and your chosen fruits, vegetables, or leaves. Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the eggs promptly if you want lighter shades. For darker colors, strain the dye into a bowl with the eggs and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. Submitted by, Dorothy Stuchly Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—

Lodge 13 Dime Box youth attend district outing
Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club met on February 28, 2010, for its monthly meeting before going to Horseshoe Junction in Brenham for the District One outing. During the meeting, we discussed fundraiser ideas and summer trips. We are going to sell Little Caesar’s Pizza kits to raise money for a trip during the summer. We also discussed a Join Hands Day project to do with the adult lodge to give back to our home lodge. We are still gathering ideas and will discuss this at the next meeting. We talked about ideas for recruiting new members to the lodge. Youth Leader Sue Ellen David will be mailing out flyers and posting them at different businesses in Dime Box. Hopefully, we will be able to expand our youth club and get more youth in Dime Box involved in our organization. We all did Vestnik projects then

Lodge 13 Dime Box youth: lost in laser tag
Hey, Everyone! On February 28, 2010, my friends and I at Lodge 13, Dime Box went to Horseshoe Junction with the rest of District One. We had a lot of fun. We played mini bowling and laser tag. Laser tag was the best! It was so dark inside the battle area. I got lost in the upstairs and could not find my way out! Luckily, I saw the door and was free. Then, we drove go-carts. I was still too short to drive so I rode in a twoseated go-cart, and my mom drove. We had the fastest cart on the track! After that, I jumped on the slingshot jumpers and did back flips. That was so much fun. I climbed the rock wall, too, and got halfway to the top then got scared and came back down! I had fun on the bumper boats and even got soaked from people squirting me with water. The putt-putt golf was fun, too, but I did not make a hole-inone — just a putt in the water. There were six kids and two adults who went from Lodge 13. Patrick, Madison, and I rode with my mom, and William, Matthew, and Kolby rode with Kolby’s dad. Thank you for taking us. It was so much fun. I can’t wait to do it again! Sincerely, Hunter David —SPJST—

Dear Friends, The College of Music at the University of North Texas, in collaboration with the CEFT Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture, presented Bedrich Smetana’s internationally acclaimed comic opera, Prodana nevesta (The Bartered Bride) in late February and early March in the Lyric Theater in the Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT campus. The full production included with period costumes, special sets, dramatic lighting, and the UNT Symphony Orchestra. The lyrics were sung in Czech by students in the College of Music and had English supertitles so that everyone could follow the story. Now, a somewhat modified production will be taken on the road for the following performances: Temple - Wednesday, March 24 Contact: Sandi Wicker Office: (254) 899-2935 Cell: (254) 760-9655 email: ssandiwicker@aol.com

Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884), who has long been regarded as the Father of Czech Music, sought inspiration for his work from the old folk songs and dances of his native Bohemia. This is especially true of his The Bartered Bride which premiered in 1866. Hailed as one of the greatest of all comic operas, The Bartered Bride is a delightful story of young love and the triumph of true love set to Smetana’s hauntingly beautiful old-world melodies that continue to characterize the Czech musical heritage to this day. The action takes place in a typical 19th century village in the Czech countryside. Act I begins with the villagers gathering in the square, which has

been colorfully decorated in celebration of the spring festival, and ends as the joyous townspeople, caught up in the festive mood, dance in a lively polka. The rest of the story evolves around the lovers, Maria and Jenik, and their clever schemes to outwit Maria’s parents, Krusina and Ludmila, who with the help of the village matchmaker, Kecal, have arranged for her marriage to Vasek, son of a wealthy landowner, Micha. To learn more about Smetana and his work, plan to attend the pre-performance lectures which will begin one hour before curtain time at each performance. In order to make the production as authentically Czech as possible, Dean James Scott arranged for Jiri Petrdlik, the noted young conductor of the National Opera Theater in Prague and of symphony orchestras in both Prague and Brno, to come to North Texas to coach faculty and students alike on the production of a Czech opera and on the intricacies of the Czech language. The Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) has been extremely fortunate in our association with the University of North Texas. We enjoy a fine rapport with Dean Scott, his faculty, and staff who are as enthusiastic about the beauty and diversity of Czech music as any bred-in-the-bone Czech. They welcome CEFT’s suggestions and remain respectful of CEFT’s mission and goals. This production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride bears witness to the success of that collaboration and will go down in history as the premier production of a Czech opera in the century-old history of the College of Music at UNT. We invite you to join us at any of the performances to savor the moment and to celebrate the significance of this milestone in the history of Czech music here in Texas and of its future at one of the most prestigious music schools in the nation. Please encourage your children and grandchildren to join you. It’s an experience wellsuited for the whole family. Anyone who has ever attended any of the many Czech festivals held annually across the state will feel right at home with The Bartered Bride. We would appreciate your help in publicizing this event. Please spread the word among your friends; send notices to your local newspapers; and contact the administrative officials and Parent-Teacher Associations in your neighboring schools so that a maxi-
Page 27
mum number of students across the state might enjoy exposure to an authentic Czech production of Smetana’s lighthearted opera, a rare opportunity that is not likely to be repeated in the near future. In closing, we would like to thank each of you for your generous support of CEFT’s program at the University of North Texas and invite you to join us in raising yet another $500,000 for the CEFT Kostohryz endowment in order to expose an even greater number of students each year to the riches of the Czech cultural heritage and to send them into the world, for generations to come, as educators and performers with a deep abiding appreciation of Czech music and the lyrical beauty of the Czech language. We would be most grateful for your support. The students whose lives are touched by your generosity will be, too. Participation in the production of a Czech opera sung in the Czech language will add a new dimension to the musical education of students at UNT and a new language to their repertoire. Every dollar of your tax-deductible contribution will go directly to the CEFT Kostohryz endowment. CEFT is an all-volunteer organization. There are no administrative costs. Please send your check to: CEFT Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture c/o Tony Pustejovsky, Treasurer PO Box 744313 Dallas, Texas 75374-4313
Thank you for your kind attention and careful consideration. We hope to hear from you soon. We’re interested in your ideas and welcome your suggestions and active participation in CEFT’s work of promoting the study of the language, music, and culture of the Czech lands at institutions of higher learning across the state. With warmest personal regards, Margaret Jaresh Klečka Member of the CEFT Board of Directors UNT Advisory Committee SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas —SPJST—

popular that it is often considered the “Czech National Opera.” It is a delightful love story set to romantic, folk-like melodies. It’s an experience that is well-suited for the whole family. The opera is in three acts and is considered to have made a major contribution towards the development of Czech music. format with spoken dialogue. Set in a country village and with realistic characters, it tells the story of how, after a late surprise revelation, true love prevails over the combined efforts of ambitious parents and a scheming marriage broker. The opera was not immediately successful, and was revised and extended in the following four years. In its final version, premiered in 1870, it gained rapid popularity and eventually became a worldwide success. Smetana’s musical treatment makes considerable use of traditional Bohemian dance forms such as the polka and furiant, although he largely avoids the direct quotation of folksong. He nevertheless created music which was accurately folk-like and is considered by Czechs to be quintessentially Czech in spirit. The overture, often played as a concert piece independently from the opera, was, unusually, composed before almost any of the other music had been written. After a performance at the Vienna Music and Theatre Exhibition of 1892, the opera achieved international recognition. It was performed in Chicago in 1893, London in 1895, and reached New York in 1909, subsequently becoming the first, and for many years the only, Czech opera in the general repertory. The Bartered Bride is sung in Czech with English supertitles. A preperformance lecture for opera ticket holders will be given by UNT Opera Director Paula Homer. It is produced in collaboration with the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas and the Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture Fund. Sponsors include SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Johnnie Krizan of West. Tickets may be obtained at the Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French in Temple. Refreshments will be served. An enthusiastic review of The Bartered Bride
Submitted by Lou Zaeske Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society President
This spring, the College of Music at the University of North Texas (UNT) in collaboration with the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) is sponsoring a production of Bedřich Smetana’s internationally acclaimed Czech Opera Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride). On Sunday afternoon, March 7, 2010, Jo Ann and I had the pleasure of attending the final performance of this most cherished Czech opera on the UNT campus in Denton, Texas, before the beginning of the Texas tour of this opera. The Texas tour of this opera will feature 90-minute live performances in four other Texas cities—Temple on March 24, Bryan-College Station on March 25, Houston on March 27, and Austin on March 28. Details for each of these Texas Tour performances can be found in the Czech Cultural Calendar section of this edition of the Věstník. The final performance of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride that Jo Ann and I attended in Denton was in the Murchison Performing Arts Center on the UNT campus. We attended this performance along with our daughter and son-in-law, Jeannine and Chris Koll of Lewisville, and their teenage daughters, Jennifer and Lauren. We all thoroughly enjoyed this outstanding production of this famous comic Czech opera. “Superb!” would be a good oneword description of this performance of Smetana’s Prodaná nevěsta. The music by the UNT Symphony Orchestra was beautiful, as was the singing by the UNT Opera members. Moreover, the cast of this performance was outstanding in all respects, in particular, their singing and acting in the Czech language, and their dancing. The scenic design and costumes were also very well done. And, the half hour pre-performance lecture was most appropriate to give the background of this opera and an overview to set the mood. We would highly recommend this opera and encourage everyone to see it. English supertitles allow one to easily follow the story, even if one does not understand Czech.
“Prodaná nevěsta” March 25 in Bryan The performance of Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride) in Bryan-College Station will be on Thursday evening, March 25 at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 1100 Carter Creek Parkway in Bryan. A traveling group of student and faculty performers from the UNT College of Music will be under the direction of Professor Thomas Sovik. An introductory lecture about the opera will begin at 7 p.m., with the 90minute performance to follow at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, with no admission charge, though freewill donations will be welcome. It is sponsored by the CEFT William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship in the Department of English at Texas A&M University, with assistance from the Department of Performance Studies at Texas A&M and Dr. Marcelo Bussiki at Blinn CollegeBryan campus. Following the performance, there will be a reception, with drinks and snacks, and an opportunity to meet the performers. —SPJST—
