Rockin’ Granny Dorothy Vitek Raises $2,655 for Relay for Life
Dorothy Vitek of Lodge 24, Cyclone collected $2,655 for last year’s Relay for Life. For the second year, she was the highest collector in the “Rockin’ Grannies” team. The team, Dorothy says, is comprised of individuals who are very young-atheart for cancer eradication. “Since we can’t all walk around the track to fulfill our requirements, we were allowed to rock.”

VӖSTNÍK
Ever wonder . . . Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouths closed? Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery?” Why is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word? Why is it that doctors call what they do ‘practice?’ Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dish washing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food? Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff? Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? Get Ready to Join Hands Mark Saturday, May 1, 2010, on your calendar and make plans for your lodge or youth club to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in cooperation with the National Fraternal Congress of America. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that
fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs get involved on this special day! The first step is for your lodge to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Who better to work with that your lodge’s youth club! In the event that your lodge doesn’t have a youth club, it’s an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You will also want to involve another community service, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST lodges that conduct Join Hands Day projects in 2010 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the Home Office. A form is available at www.spjst.org in the fraternal section. The incentive will be sent to the lodge following the registration of the event on the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org. For assistance, please contact the SPJST Fraternal Department at (800) 727-7578. Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 10 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000. Lodges are strongly encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups. —SPJST—

March Meeting Report Our last meeting on March 11 was the birthday celebration for January, February, and March birthdays. A German chocolate cake was sent by Kathy and Mike Ahlstrom. Thanks to Franklin Elles for picking it up as we were out of town. (It sure looks good in the picture.) I hope everyone enjoyed it – my favorite cake – and happy birthday to all! If you missed the Polka Fest on February 28, you missed out on a great Sunday afternoon! The pictures in the March 10 Vestnik were proof enough! Music was by The Red Ravens and The Dujka Brothers . . . a winning combination whether you danced or listened to the music from your chair, I guarantee your feet were moving! (2) The Buccigrossi family who drove in from LaVernia to help – Darla Elles Buccigrossi and daughter Simona helped with the kolaches and silent auction while husband Mark and daughter Sara helped with ticket sales. Lodge 47, Seaton reports on March meeting
Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 47, Seaton held its meeting on Sunday, March 7, 2010. I would like to thank Dolores Skrabanek for filling in for me as secretary as I was home battling back and hip spasms.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Edwin Pechal. Youth members Jerry Pechal and Justin Kraatz presented the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in a moment of silence for departed members, Albina Haisler, Mary Shipley, Brenda Stermer, and Dorothy Pechal. To each family, may God bless you in the loss of your loved one. Dorothy Pechal was a very faithful lodge member, attending almost every meeting, even after her health slowed her down. She attended the February meeting which was held on January 31. If we ever needed to know how to say a word in Czech, know who someone was related to, or anything about the hall, she was the lady to see. She was very loved by all who knew her. Her smile was endless. Dorothy was very special to me. She and her late husband, Jerry, and my late parents, Alfred and Martha Klusacek, were the best of friends. The four of them took many Sunday afternoon rides together, with their most favorite being to Noack (near Taylor) to eat. SPJST was so very special and important to them. I along with, Edwin, Donnie, David, and Joyce are proud to be able to continue being involved in SPJST as they were. We feel sure they have made a “Noack” in Heaven. Mom and Dad, we love you and miss you! We welcomed visitors Alice Lopez (soon to be Alice Mares), Jason, Becky, and Bailee Beckendorf. We welcome you and please do visit with us again. We were all very pleased to hear that Don Mikeska is now home from the hospital. Don, take care of yourself, and we hope you are feeling much better soon. Thank you, lodge members, for the sweet get well card you each signed for me. It meant so

very much to me, and you are each very special. By the way, I am feeling much better. New members welcomed to our membership are Paetyn Collen Beckendorf, Rose Mary Coufal, Keodrian Turner, Saniyah Turner, NaMichael Turner, Kenneth G. Turner, A’tesia Turner, Shakayla A. Turner, and Keanna S. Taplin. Transferring into our lodge is Randy W. Coufal. We thank you for choosing our lodge, and please join us for our Sunday meetings and other activities. We would love to have you. Correspondence included thank you notes from the families of Mary Shipley, Aline Haisler, and Frank Matous for the plants/memorial scholarship in their memory. President Pechal stated the SPJST Straight Domino Tournament turned out very good. We were very pleased that our own Leroy Dana and Anton Bravenec were state winners. Congratulations, gentlemen! We are very proud of you! Thank you to all members who worked that day in preparing the meal and making sure the hall was comfortable for everyone. We thank those of you who came from across the state to participate. We hope you all enjoyed the day and felt welcome at our lodge. We hope to see you again soon. I think it is great SPJST sponsors tournaments which interest so many people. This is true fraternalism, visiting with others from so many different areas. I once heard someone say they enjoyed playing in these tournaments, but mainly came just to see friends they had met at previous ones. Vice President/FAC Frank Klinkovsky gave a report on all upcoming events—local, district, and

statewide. The Texas Fraternal Congress Bowling Tournament will be held on March 27; the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive ends on March 31; the State 42 Domino Tournament will be held April 3 in Corpus Christi; the Bloomin’ Temple Festival is April 10; Join Hands Day is May 1; State Horseshoe Tournament is May 15 in Temple; and the End-of-Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi is August 13 to 15. Wow, what different types of fun we can have with SPJST! Watch the Vestnik for details or call the Home Office with any questions. On March 27 and 28, Youth Leader Lynette Talasek, her assistants Tammy Pechal and Missie Wilson, and I will be joining other youth leaders from across the state at Cooper Farm for the annual Youth Leaders Workshop. We are looking so forward to that weekend. Our lodge voted unanimously to donate toward the fund for the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden project. Treasurer David Pechal gave the treasurer’s report. Also giving reports were Bar Chairman Dolores Skrabanek and Ticket Chairman Ruth Kohutek. Thank you to the youth club for chairing the kitchen for 2010. Youth Leader Lynette Talasek reported 22 members and four visitors were present for today’s meeting. The youth club had its membership drive on February 19 which was a great success. Thank you to all who helped in any way. Thank you also to the many who donated, whether bringing items, food or bidding on the auction items. The youth club appreciates your support tremendously. Lynette also read a letter from the Friendship House of Temple thanking the youth for helping out during the Christmas holidays. We

Save the date for rebate: Texas trade up appliance program
April could mean substantial rebates for Texas residents looking to replace certain older appliances with new ENERGY STAR-rated appliances. The state of Texas received more than $23 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish an Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, the first of its kind in Texas. Here are important dates to remember: • April 5, 2010 — Appliance rebates can be reserved either by phone or online starting April 5, 2010. • April 16 to 25, 2010 — The mail-in rebate program is only good on qualifying purchases made during this time frame.
Who Qualifies? Texas residents qualify for a rebate if they purchase an eligible appliance in-store at a Texas retailer between April 16 and April 25, 2010. In Memoriam
In Memory of Lydia Bartek
Lydia Alice Bartek, 93, of Houston, formerly Baytown, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, in a Houston hospital after a brief illness. She was born in the small community of Cyclone in Bell County but hated farming. When she and her husband married, they had a café in Temple where they sold hamLydia Bartek burgers and beer with stew and chili as a good calling. In 1943, they moved to Baytown with their daughter for a job with Humble Oil (now ExxonMobil) followed by the birth of their son only a month later. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 156, Baytown and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was a devoted mother, wife, and friend to all. Her most important accomplishment in life related to the guidance and upbringing of her son, daughter, and grandson. She was known as the “leaf slave” to her yard, and she loved mowing her lawn on her riding lawnmower. She was also a great neighbor, helping where she could, especially the elderly neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Walter J. Bartek Sr.; son Walter J. Bartek, Jr.; parents John and Lucy Stepan; brothers Jake Stepan and Clarence “Buck” Stepan; and sister Wilma Sembera. She is survived by daughter Mary Bartek of Houston; grandson Todd Eric Bartek of Baytown; and sister Edna Krupka of Fort Worth. Her family received friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday, March 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were Friday, March 12 at 10 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Reverend Bonnie Parker officiating. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard. He was also a member of the Guardian Angel Catholic Church, KJT, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion in Wallis. He served his country in the Korean War and was an honorary member of the Wallis Fire Department. Dennis’ greatest civic passion was the American Legion where he held the position of finance officer for 28 years. Dennis was extremely proud of the Wallis Post. He met many friends through the Legion at conventions and conferences that always put a smile on his face. Dennis loved getting the family together for barbecues in the back yard, working in the yard, and tending to his garden. He also raised chickens and sold eggs to many folks which turned into friendships that lasted for years. He liked going to Coushatta to try his luck on the slots, working at the KC hall selling tickets at fish fries, and tending bar at the Legion Hall for any event taking place there, especially at bingo every Thursday night. Dennis is preceded in death by wife Dorothy; parents Ladgie and Lillie Korenek; and brother Eldon. He is survived by sons Kenneth Wayne, Michael Joseph, and Gary Lee and wife Lisa, all of Wallis; sisters-inlaw Annie Mae Korenek of Wallis and Elnora Barcak of Rosenberg; grandchildren Courtney, Amy, Kenneth, II, Justin, Jonathon, Amanda, Braidyn and Reagan; and great-grandchildren Brooke, Andrew, and Grace; and numerous nieces and nephews.
President našeho řádu Wilburn Willis zahájil naši schůzi, přivítal přítomné členy a členky, složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí, a uctili chvilkou ticha památku našich zemřelých členů.
června 2010 a budeme mít oslavu 50 a 75 let členství u naší jednoty těchto členů a členek: Anetta M. Bezděk, George Henderson, Lou Ellen Holásek, H. Lee Hykel, Albert R. Matula, Patricia Kolář, Fred Křižan, John-

Czech and Slovak folk dress also features fine cut work, elaborate beading, seven kinds of bobbin lace, weaving, felting, and leather work. Jozef Ivaska, who will perform traditional Czech and Moravian folk songs throughout the day, is a charismatic performer who has sung in 24 countries on four continents. Among the more than a dozen CDs he has recorded, “Pisnicka Ceska,” a compilation of the most beloved Czech songs, was a hit, as well as a similar CD for Slovak folk songs. He won a national song competition in Slovakia in 1985 for his original composition, “My Own Face” which was immediately banned by the Communist government. Many of his original compositions became very popular and were banned as protest songs. A traditional Czech dinner will be served, plus sausage, soup, kolaches, and other pastries. Cultural booths, a genealogy research room, silent auction, country store, plant booth, and numerous vendors provide opportuni-

Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America through Galveston
Moody Gardens in Galveston is currently presenting the traveling exhibit Forgotten Gateway chronicling the Port of Galveston’s largely forgotten history as a major gateway to American immigration from 1845 to 1924. Long before Ellis Island processed its first immigrant, Galveston was a port of entry for hundreds of thousands of immigrants. While the New York counterpart made it a natural port for Europeans, Galveston attracted a diverse group of people from Europe, Mexico, South and Central America, and even Asia. In addition, before the Civil War, it was a major port for forced migration—the sale and transport of slaves from Africa and other points in the United States to Texas. The exhibit highlights enduring humanities themes in the history of immigration, including the dangers of the journey, making a life in a new land, navigating bureaucracy, confronting discrimination, and becoming “American.” These trials and tribulations are illuminated through personal stories, dynamic visitor interactive kiosks, engaging media pieces, and more than 200 original artifacts and documents. The port cities of New Orleans and Galveston hold valuable records of the immigrants’ arrival on ships. However, some of the Galveston documents were lost to a devastating hurricane in 1900. Still, there are many avenues for Texans to trace their roots: Texas Seaport Museum has compiled the nation’s only computerized listing of immigrants to Galve-
Page 20
ston, Texas. The museum’s immigration exhibit features text and historic photographs illustrating Galveston’s role in immigration history and the major organized immigration movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Computer terminals in the exhibit area allow visitors to search for information taken from ships’ passenger manifests. Don’t forget the Premier Clayton Library in Houston, the Texas Czech Genealogical Society, and, certainly, chapters of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas as great resources. On the first and third Saturdays of each month, local descendants and cultural organizations discuss immigration through the Galveston Cultural Speaker Series (800) 582-4673 or http://moodygardens.org through September 11, 2010. The Exhibition moves on to New York City immediately thereafter. We urge you to not miss this first of its kind multifaceted exhibit that presents the story of Galveston as an immigrant port of entry in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. As co-founder with my husband Bill, and CEO, of the Czech Center Museum Houston, I was very honored in 2009 to be asked to discuss the importance of ancestry, our roots to becoming American, on the beautiful, clear, sunny, picture-perfect day of March 6, 2010, in Moody Gardens Discovery Pyramid among the exhibits. As first generation Czech on my father’s side, second on my mother’s, one of their 15 children, I am a descendant of Czech immigrants who came to the United States through Galveston Island just as so many other Texans did. Happy Easter Veselé Velikonoce
In the years before 1989 when Czechoslovakia became a free country again, the meaning of Easter (Velikonoce — from Veliké noci or Great Nights) was limited to the welcoming of spring. The religious connotations of Easter were suppressed under the communist regime. Nowadays, people are again aware of the religious origin of Easter, but Easter has not become a serious religious holiday. Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs. Many symbols of Easter are related to the spring and beginning of new life. In the Czech Republic, Easter symbols include:

Eggs and kraslice The hand-painted or decorated egg (kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Easter eggs are decorated by girls to be given to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw (hay), watercolors, onion peels, and picture stickers. There are no limitations in creating pretty, colorful eggs. A nationwide Easter egg contest is held in many Czech cities around Easter time.
Baby Animals— Lamb, Bunny Rabbit, Chicken One Easter tradition is to bake a lamb, but in the Czech Republic real lamb is usually replaced by one made from gingerbread.
Pussywillow and Pomlázka Young, live pussywillow twigs are thought to bring health and youth to anyone who is whipped with them. A pomlázka (from pomladit or “make younger”) — a braided whip made from pussywillow twigs — has therefore been used for centuries by boys who go caroling on Easter Monday and symbolically whip girls on the legs. Boys used to make their own pomlázky in the past (the more twigs, the more difficult it was to braid one), but this tradition and skill is long gone and pomlázky can be bought in stores and on the streets. Some men don’t even bother and use a single twig or even a wooden spoon!
Dousing Dousing a girl with water has a similar symbolic meaning as the pomlázka.
The Color Red Red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness and new life that comes with the spring.
The Days Before Easter Sunday Children finish school on Ugly Wednesday - škaredá středa - which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of Green Thursday - Zelení čtvrtek - every boy in the village equips himself with a wooden rattle - řehtačka - which is specially made for the purpose, the boys form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling is to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday - Velkí pátek - and one more time on White Saturday - Bílá sobota - when the boys don’t only walk through the village, but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they’re given money which they then split between themselves.
the farmer’s wife to whip the livestock, as well as everyone in the household, including men and children. Boys would whip girls lightly on the legs and possibly douse them with water, which had a similar symbolic meaning. An Easter carol, usually asking for an egg or two, would be recited by the boy while whipping. The girl would then reward the boy with a painted egg or candy and tie a ribbon around his pomlázka. As the boys progressed through the village, their bags filled up with eggs and their pomlázky were adorned with more and more colorful ribbons. This tradition is still largely upheld, especially in villages and small towns, although it may have lost its symbolism and romance and is now performed mainly for fun. Some boys and men seem to have forgotten that the whipping is supposed to be only symbolic and girls don’t always like that. The reward has also changed — money and shots of plum brandy are
21
often given instead of or in addition to painted eggs and candy. So by early afternoon, groups of happy men can be seen staggering along the road. All that aside, Easter still remains one of the most joyful and fun holidays on the Czech calendar.

Easter Sunday Easter Sunday - Neděle velikonoční - is a day of preparations for Easter Monday. Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they haven’t done so before, and boys prepare their pomlázky!
Easter Monday Easter Monday - Pondělí velikonoční - is a day off, the day of the pomlázka. The origin of the pomlázka tradition (pomlázka meaning both the whip and the tradition itself) dates back to pagan times. Its original purpose and symbolic meaning is to chase away illness and bad spirits and bring health and youth for the rest of the year to everyone who is whipped with the young pussywillow twigs. In the past, pomlázka was not only used by boys to whip girls, but also by
