Lodge 88, Houston member Jeanette Bender grand prizewinner

Special Carpooler Shares Her Green Gift with Many

When Jeanette Bender began carpooling to work five years ago, she had no way of knowing the unexpected twists and turns, not to mention the joys and rewards sharing the ride would bring. In February, Jeanette was named the grand prizewinner in the H-E-B 15,000,000 Mile Commuter Challenge, and won a year’s worth of groceries from H-E-B. What has given Jeanette even more pleasure than winning the grand prize is sharing her windfall. She’s giving most of it away starting with a $1,000 to the food pantry in Needville, Texas, where she lives. She hosted an ice cream social on March 11 for her colleagues at Allstate Insurance Company (all 175 of them). She’s also planning a dinner party of surf and turf for her NuRide buddies and giving

says Jeanette, who has worked at Allstate Insurance Company for 21 years. Not every mile has been full of laughs though. About a year and a half ago, Jeanette learned she had a malignant tumor. Janice Polak says, “We knew she had a doctor’s appointment because we coordinate our driving schedules around each other’s appointments, etc, but the news was still sudden. We were all there. She told us in carpool that she had cancer.” “They were a big support system, coming by to visit me and calling me on the phone, because I had to take a year off from work while undergoing treatment,” Jeanette explained. Jeanette completed cancer treatment in January and says proudly, “I am a cancer sur-

Happy Easter! Easter bonnets, brightly painted eggs, tasty sweets, and fancy new

dresses bring delight to children and adults alike at this festive time of year. As we celebrate the Easter holiday, let’s also remember the true meaning of it all. Best wishes for a blessed and happy Easter holiday.

Congratulations, District Two! Lodge 80, Holland hosted the District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 21. The hall was beautifully decorated, and Lodge 80 members created a warm and friendly atmosphere. Congratulations to the members, lodges, and youth clubs in District Two! The district recognized nine local lodge fraternalists of the year, 15 lodges in the incentive program, and eight youth clubs. That’s impressive. Keep up the great work!

The Bartered Bride I very much enjoy live performances, but I have never really been into opera — until now! David and I attended Bedrich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride performance at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple on Wednesday evening, March 24. The performance was presented by the University of North Texas’ College of Music, and it was wonderful. We were both thoroughly entertained. Everything was in the Czech language, but the supertitles made it very easy to follow the story. Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center hosted the performance that was produced in collaboration with the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) Frank J. and Hermine Hurta Kostohryz Residency in Czech Music and Culture Fund. CEFT helped bring language and music consultants Jiri Petrdlik, Timothy Cheek, and Carol Issac to Denton to coach

UNT’s opera students in the Czech language for Prodana nevesta. Thanks to the Kostohryz Residency for providing the opportunity to present this well-known opera in its original language. The March 24 presentation was funded in part by (as listed in the program) SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth; District Three Director Johnnie Krizan; and SPJST Lodges 5, Pilot Point; 6, Cottonwood; 35, Elk; 66, Waco; 84, Dallas; 135, Ennis; 180, Burleson; and 204, Stephenville. The production staff consisted of music director/supertitles - Stephen Dubberly; stage director/producer/narrator/supertitles operator - Paula Homer; pianists Charlie Kim and Adrian Sovik; scenic designer/costume designer Michael Robinson; choreographer Michael Serrecchia; make-up and wig artist - Amanda Rodriguez; stage manager/technical director Jonathan Hohman; rehearsal pianists - Janice Fehlauer and Charlie Kim; program - Linda Strube; and drivers - Thomas Sovik, David Huff, and Devin Iller Tour manager was Thomas Sovik. Other tour locations included BryanCollege Station on March 25, Houston on March 27, and Austin on March 28. Congratulations to the cast and crew on a job well done, and thank you for taking the production on the road and sharing the talent. S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Open House Congratulations to S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living on the grand opening of its absolutely beautiful facility. An open house was held on March 25. SPJST’s efforts in spearheading the drive to construct a living memorial garden to honor victims of the November 5, 2009, Fort Hood shooting is yielding results. In addition to the strong support coming from SPJST lodges and members, outside groups are also taking the project to heart. VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, Lions, Civitan, Extension and Cooperative Association members, General Federation of Women’s Club members, Jaycees, Kiwanians, Optimists, Rotarians, their junior organizations, and other groups are all prospective partners in SPJST’s effort to raise funds for the living memorial garden project. If you are affiliated with any of these organizations — or other community or church groups — and you would like someone from the SPJST Home Office to make a local presentation to convey information about the living garden memorial, please contact the Home Office at (800) 727-7578, and we will arrange for a presenter. From the President’s Department

State FAC encourages lodges, youth to participate on Join Hands Day

Thanks to all members and lodges who participated in this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and SPJST Memorial Scholarship Fund Drive. Donations are still coming in from the drive, which concludes March 31. Watch the Vestnik in April for the final tally. Many high school seniors and undergraduate students will be able to continue their higher education because of your kindness and generosity. Contributions from SPJST members, lodges and community organizations are coming in daily for the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. Please continue to talk up the project with everyone you come in contact with and encourage their participation in this worthy project.

District Spring Meetings Three district spring meetings have already been held. Four more district meetings will be held in April. These meetings are informative, and your participation and input is very important for the success of SPJST and your district. What better time to meet fellow SPJST members in your district. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district. They are:

District One—Sunday, April 18 SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm District Three—Sunday, April 25 SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson District Five—Saturday, April 10 SPJST Lodge 196, Houston-West District Six—Sunday, April 25 SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville

Bloomin’ Temple Festival The Bloomin’ Temple Car Show will be held in Temple on Saturday, April 10. The Bloomin’ Temple Model Car Contest is a new category this year. Please make plans to attend for a good time! For additional information or to volunteer with the car show, please contact David Nauert (254) 534-0809 or Melanie Zavodny (254) 534-0807. Email melaniez@vvm.com or visit www.spjst.org. Join Hands Day I have been hearing about some great projects being planned for this year’s Join Hands Day. I hope your plans are progressing well for Join

Hands Day, which will be observed May 1. It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! The goal for this year is 55 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to your local newspaper so residents in your community will know what you are doing for the community and to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. Again, this year, the Join Hands Day awards center will select 10 awardees from thousands of volunteer projects that develop youth and adult partnerships on Join Hands Day. Each winning project receives a $1,000 check and an engraved award. Coordinating groups choose how the funds are used. Some organizations find it appropriate to donate the money to the beneficiary of the project or another benevolent cause. Others choose to save it as seed money for next year’s event. In selecting Excellence Award recipients, the most important consideration is the quality of the youth and adult partnership in planning and executing the event. Other criteria include the quality of the project to the neighborhood or to persons in need and the effectiveness of the mobilization group. I would love to see one of our local lodges receive this award. Do not forget that the Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local lodges that partner with the youth club or some other youth organization in their community. This money is to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and online with Join Hands Day. Following confirmation of receipt of your project from the Join Hands Day association, the Home Office will then forward a check to the local lodge. If you need more information for planning your project, please contact me by email cejenke @wmconnect.com, phone (210) 413-3053, or see Lodge 91, Crosby’s article about “Paws Across Texas.” You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament The SPJST State Horseshoe Tour-

Teams will consist of two persons (two male, two female, or mixed – one male, one female). Lodge 18, Elgin receives letter of gratitude

Dear Members, We received this letter recently, and I want to share it with everyone. Fraternally, Ray Nelson, President

Dear Mr. Nelson, On behalf of the Lost Pines Cowboy Church, I want to express to the officers and members of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin and to you personally our deep appreciation to your organization for allowing our church to meet at the lodge for our worship services. In November, when we were faced with the challenge of finding a place for our new church to meet out of the winter weather, SPJST Lodge 18 graciously offered the use of your building. Without this support, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, for our church to continue to meet during the winter months. Our first Sunday at the lodge, we had 64 in at-

tendance. This past Sunday (February 7), we had 108 in our service. SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin has helped our church grow and reach out into our community to help people with their needs. Thanks to SPJST, you have had an important part of helping our community. We could not have accomplished this without your assistance. In all good working relationships, we should both benefit. Lost Pines Cowboy Church wants to assist SPJST in reaching out to our community and increasing the visibility and impact of the organization in Elgin. This past Sunday, Ms. Betty Gaskamp attended our lunch after the worship service and presented the products offered by SPJST to our church family. In addition, we are planning combined activities involving our youth and children’s ministry, the young people from the lodge, and young people from the community to introduce families to the benefits of Lost Pines Cowboy Church and SPJST. We want to help plan events for the lodge drawing on our resources for music, special events, and community activities so that Elgin will know the impact of

SPJST in our community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who is a part of SPJST for allowing us the privilege of using your facility. Our hope is that in the weeks and months ahead, we can join together to offer many opportunities for our community to see how our church and your organization make a difference in Elgin. Thank you and best regards. Greg Long, Pastor Lost Pines Cowboy Church —SPJST—

Lodge 91, Crosby seeks lodges, youth to help with Paws Across Texas

SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby encourages lodges and youth clubs to assist with Paws Across Texas — a benefit to help pets and animals across Texas. SPJST lodges and youth clubs can help support animal shelters and veterinarian offices by soliciting food and money donations from the public and businesses in your community. Then, choose a shelter to benefit hungry and misfortunate animals to benefit. Through December 2010, let’s see just how much food and money we can collect as a fraternal organization. Each lodge/youth club is asked to keep a count on how many pounds of food and how much money it collects. Turn these numbers in to your district fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) who will notify the State FAC. The State FAC will tally a grand total at the end of the year. Let’s show the world how SPJST and its lodges and youth clubs can make a difference in our great state of Texas. Thanks for your support of this project. Fraternally, Will Locke, President —SPJST—

The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at the Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico. It was a very good meeting, and members discussed the online meeting that will take place in April. Wes Pierce will set up the meeting on web ex.com. Any members who want to join need to let one of the officers know that they want to join in the meeting: first - Wes Pierce john.wes.pierce@gmail.com; second - Sandra Pierce - sklpierce@hotmail.com; third - Norman M. Kneschk - normk@htcomp.net. RSVP by April 15 so Wes can set up the meeting on web ex.com. The officers plan to meet at Sandra Pierce’s house for the meeting. If you do not have a computer, you can join in on the telephone. Sandra’s number is (254) 485-5801 or to be there with the officers. This will be a first for SPJST and a learning experience. Donna Pierce brought us up-to-date on the youth club and told the members that the youth will be baking cookies for the fire department, and their next meeting will be at the bowling alley in Stephenville. There was a motion to donate $100 to the youth club to help them get started as they are doing a good job. The members want to encourage them to keep up the good work. The youth also are plan-

ning a trip to the observatory in Coryell County between Turnersville and Clifton in August to look at the stars and see how an observatory works. There was a motion to donate $25 to the Czech Heritage Museum to help defray the cost of the performance of The Bartered Bride. After the meeting, the members enjoyed a good meal paid for by the lodge and socialized for a while. We missed all of you who did not make the meeting. We hope to see you the next time. Keep smiling, Norman M. Kneschk President/Treasurer/Reporter —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 11, 2010. Ann Clagett, Dorothy Prachyl, and myself arrived at 8 a.m. We arranged tables and chairs, and others started arriving. We stretched Joyce Ehrenberger’s quilt top which was the last top her grandmother Nancy Jane Parker made before she passed away in 1954. Before we knew it, we had quilters all around. Thank you, everyone. By lunchtime, we had 22 members and two guests Joe and Julius. Ann Clagett led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Ann brought a big pot of stew, and we had many, many other dishes—all were very good. Thank you, everyone, and thank you to the cleanup crew. We even cleaned out the cabinet space in the kitchen. It really needed it, and it really looks nice now. After lunch, new President Dorothy Prachyl called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Sylvia Laznovsky, our member, cousin of Pat Fowler and Dorothy J. Kudrna, second cousin of Bessie Laznovsky, and sister-in-law of Lil Laznovsky; for Bernie Horak, cousin of Dorothy Valek; for Marian Nesuda, cousin of Dorothy J. Kudrna; for Victor Jurcik, uncle of Bertha Podhrasky and Sadie Kubin; and for Jerry Kohn, husband of Vickie Kohn. Dorothy J. read the minutes of the last meeting, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Thank you went out to the following for donations made in memory of Sylvia Laznovsky: Jerry and Georgia Stransky, Dorothy Prachyl, Lil Kosarek, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Libbie Vrla, Bessie Laznovsky, Ann Clagett, Sidney Bridewell, Dorothy Valek, and Georgie Morales; in memory of Jerry Kohn by Ella Mae Zmolik; in memory of Ernest Haskovec, Emil Janousek, Eleanora Bowers, and Marian Nesuda by Dorothy J. Kudrna. We appreciate the above. Sunshine Lady Eleanora an-

nounced the March and April birthday celebrants—Georgia Wensowitch, Joyce Ehrenberger, and Dorothy M. Kudrna. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Georgia and Joyce. A card was signed for Dorothy M. A thinking of you card was signed for Geraldine Zhanel. She has moved to Waxahachie, and we want her to know we are thinking of her. We hope she likes her new apartment. Eleanora also stated that she sent Sylvia a card while she was in the hospital and sent a peace plant to her funeral. The reason we included the April birthdays is we will be traveling to Temple and will not have a regular meeting in April. Pat Fowler reported there is no quilting in April; May - we will quilt for Dorothy J.; and June is open. Members, if you have a quilt top ready, please put your name on the list. Dorothy J. read all the names of the people going on the museum/Temple trip. The bus is full. It will leave Sokol Hall at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 8 and return that afternoon around 5 p.m. Please, everyone, be there by 7:30 a.m. - no later than 7:45 a.m. - so we can all board and be ready to go at 8 a.m. We will park our cars in front of the hall. Our guests going are asked to please pay before boarding the bus. Remember, everyone, you will need money to get into the museum, lunch money, and a tip for the bus driver. I am really looking forward to it. Pat Fowler thanked, and we all thanked Dorothy J. for the great job she did planning the trip with all the phone calls she made and keeping a list of all the names. You did good, Dorothy J. Lil passed out quilt squares for all to sew for the Christmas quilt which is another pretty one. Please bring your sewn squares to the May meeting. Irene Prachyl thanked everyone who quilted on her quilt last month. She donated $20 to the Circle. Thank you. We discussed the donation to Sokol Hall for the use of the kitchen and dining for our meetings. Libbie Vrla made a motion that we give the same as last year. It was seconded by Bertha Podhrasky, and all approved. Pat Fowler made a motion that we send the usual donation to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. It was seconded by Bertha, and all approved. Pat also announced that Jaroslav Cvach and two colleagues from the Czech Republic are here in the United States on business and would like to meet relatives in this area. He is a dis-

Page 13

tant cousin to the Trojaceks and Cvach families. Pat invited everyone to come to the SPJST dining room on March 14 at 2 p.m. to visit. Libbie Vrla attended the Czech play “The Bartered Bride” at the University of North Texas in Denton. She told about how much she enjoyed it, how good it was, and how beautiful the Czech singing was. Bertha and Bob Podhrasky and their son Bob and wife Diann also attended and said how wonderful it was. If you have a chance to see it, they recommend you do so. Ann Clagett read a really cute story about “Stuff.” We all have stuff — good stuff, bad stuff, new stuff, old stuff, big stuff, little stuff, my stuff, your stuff, food stuff, cleaning stuff, clothes stuff, medicine stuff, inside stuff, outside stuff, useful stuff, and junky stuff. Anyway, you get the idea. We all have stuff. It was really good. Pat also told a cute joke. We all laughed — something we all need to do more of. The door prize was brought by Bertha Podhrasky and won by Libbie Vrla. Libbie passed out the little gifts which is always fun. President Dorothy thanked everyone for coming, those who set up, helped in the kitchen, and cleaned up. She reminded everyone of the bus trip in April, and the next regular meeting will be May 13. Then, she adjourned the meeting.

Other News Joyce and Joe Ehrenberger celebrated their 63rd anniversary with their children and several longtime friends with dinner at Macaroni Grill in Dallas. Dorothy Prachyl went to Bryan recently to see her great-granddaughter’s soccer game. I didn’t ask if they won. Dorothy also said her grandson Adam Cole was thrilled to get two medals and three ribbons at his Colorado State Championship swim meet. Like I said, he may be our next Olympic gold medalist in swimming. Dorothy Valek brought some of her granddaughter’s wedding pictures. The wedding was at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas with a reception held at Union Station. Lauren was a beautiful bride, and so were the nine other grandchildren who were all in the wedding. Lauren and her husband Davey Farris are now at home in the Lakewood area of Dallas. Lauren is a graduate of Ursuline Academy and honors graduate of UT Austin with a BS in public relations and a BA in Czech language and culture. As a

recent graduate of the University of Dallas with a masters of business administration, Lauren plans to start her own business in investment real estate. Davey is a graduate of Lee Academy and the University of Mississippi. He is employed at Heracus-Kulzer as regional sales manager. Dorothy said her brother Charles Lee Kubelka and his family came for the wedding. This was very special because it has been eight years since Charles has been back to Ennis. He stays very busy with his manufacturing business in Jericho, New York, mainly children’s and teen pajamas, camp clothes, and tee-shirts. The pictures were beautiful, and the wedding sounded out of this world. We wish the new couple much happiness in their new life together. I want to say that we missed Sadie Kubin at the meeting. She wasn’t feeling steady on her legs and didn’t want to venture out. We hope she gets better soon. I also want to say that our new President Dorothy Prachyl and new Vice President Ann Clagett did a great job heading the meeting. Everyone remember April 8: be at Sokol Hall around 7:30 a.m. for the Temple trip. I know we will have a wonderful day. Stay well and happy. See you then. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at St. Thomas Parish Hall for the monthly meeting at 40 members present. We welcomed Alene Kercho who came and joined the Club. The meeting was called to order by President Mary Ann Krivanek who welcomed everyone, especially Maria Gill who has been missed for six months, and thanked Joe Kozel for the music before the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all then Vice President Betty Krenek read a poem titled, “Winter Turned to Spring.” Secretary Elizabeth Creamer read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported on sending get well cars to Annie Whitsell, Harold Balvin, and Rose Ann Spann. A valentine card was sent to Agnes Reznicek.

Door prizes were brought by Nettie Naugle - four; Lydia Alholm - two, Joan Wilcox - two; and Paula Arsenault, Alicia Castillo, and Rose Cuba. Thanks, ladies, they were all enjoyed by the 11 winners. Stanley Krenek handled the 50/50 dollar games which were won by Gerry Kortokrax and Kitty Rippin. I’m sure they enjoyed their dollars. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went to March celebrants Willie Mae Becan, Harold Balvin, Vera McKenzie, Carrie Milan, Anna Marie Moncrief, Wilma Stell, and Jo Ann Wilcox. May you all have many more! President Mary Ann reminded everyone that in April we bring food items for St. Thomas food bank. Please be generous as all food banks are in need of items. March hostesses Linda Horner, Nettie Naugle, and their assistants Elizabeth Creamer, Lillie Kosarek, Joe Kozel, Betty Krenek, Mary Ann Krivanek, Debbie Skrasek, and Darlene Tompkins were thanked for the splendid job they did. Special thanks to Shirley Martin on getting all the tables set up with St. Patrick’s Day decorations provided by Annie Whitsell who was unable to attend. Annie, you and Harold were missed. April hostesses will be Pat McWilliams and Lois Smith, and I’m sure there will be a host of helpers to assist. It was suggested the color be yellow in April so everyone wear something yellow. President Mary Ann read three riddles/jokes which were enjoyed by all. There being no further business to come before the meeting, it was adjourned. Grace was said. Then, a great St. Patrick’s Day luncheon was enjoyed by all. Following, games were played, and a good time was had by all. News Helen Skrasek has been on the go again. She, her son Gary, and his wife Debbie Skrasek traveled to Waco on March 7 to Hietmiller Steak House to help Helen’s sister Adele Janak Strand celebrate her 80th birthday along with Adele’s family and Harold’s family. Helen enjoyed a few days with Adele in Waco. After getting home, Helen repacked and flew out of DFW to Savannah, Georgia, on March 11 where she met her son Ron and his wife LeAnn and Ron’s daughter, Dr. Stephanie and husband Knick Myers, and their two daughters Sara (age 11) and Ella (age six). The group in an off-and-on rain,

toured Savannah on a trolley tour bus and enjoyed eating at a quaint tea room. Then, they drove to Hilton Head, South Carolina, and stayed at the Marriott Resort which was a short distance from the beach. Helen said they did a lot of fun things, walked on the beach, looked for seashells, made sand castles, just played, and ate a different fish every day. By special request of her great-granddaughters, they helped Helen make apple pies and an apple cobbler! After the Myers family left for home in Knoxville, Tennessee, Helen, Ron, and LeAnn drove to Charleston, South Carolina, and noticed all the many old cannons still positioned toward the sea. They enjoyed all the homes which are narrow, long, and very close together, but still charming. Helen especially enjoyed attending mass at St. Francis Catholic Church by the Sea. Again, seafood was the main course. They flew into DFW where they were met by Debbie, Ron, and LeAnn who changed planes to Oklahoma City. Helen said it most certainly was a wonderful family time. Lydia Alholm had a pipe to break in her apartment at the Wellington and now is enjoying new carpeting and new paint. Her sister Frances Matthews lives directly on the floor beneath her so she, too, had water damage and also has new carpeting. Understand, all the work has been completed. Lydia reports she had another successful trip to Durant, Oklahoma, the other day. Good for you! Helen, Lydia, Rose Steinman, Betty Landsfeld, Tracy Horn, Kitty Rippin, Mary Ann Kozel, Willie Mae Becan and family, and I enjoyed attending the 100th Celebration of KJT Society No. 54, Fort Worth. The polka mass with Czech singers from Dallas under the direction of Bob Liska was most enjoyable, and the social/dinner at St. Thomas Parrish Hall was great. It was nice to see so many friends from Dallas and Ennis. Local KJT President Joe Kozel and Vice President Mary Ann Krivanek did a great job in planning, and the food was wonderful. Betty and Stanley Krenek had kitchen duty that day. Sharron Connelly and I enjoyed seeing “The Phantom of the Opera” at Dallas Music Hall. It was great. Then Helen, Debbie, Pauline Morbitzer, and I enjoyed being guests of Lydia’s at the Artisan Theater where we saw “Brigadoon.” It, too, was good. And I drove to Denton in pouring down rain to see the last performance of “The Bartered Bride,” and it truly was great.

Page 14

I am still amazed that these college student singers learned to speak Czech so well. I could understand most of what they were saying. In fact, they spoke better Czech than I do, and I’m Czech. Mary Ann and Joe Kozel enjoyed spring break with their two grandchildren. They spent a few days here in Fort Worth then a few days in Austin. I asked Mary Ann if they took them to the Fort Worth Zoo on Wednesday which is half-price day, and she said no that they had gone to the Omni Imax Theater, and that it was a mob. The zoo had a record attendance of 25,800 so it was a zoo at the zoo; cars and people were everywhere. Special thanks to Lydia for taking notes for me at the meeting. I missed the meeting to attend the funeral service of friend Sylvia Laznovsky in Ennis. I still recall the trips we made to Prague to attend Sokol Slets, and our having a car to visit relatives. We always took turns driving while the other read the map. I would always have to tell Sylvia to slow down because I could not read those Czech towns that fast. But, we always got to where we were going. I even got real good in making u-turns. Sylvia will be missed. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 7. Don’t forget to bring your dish for lunch, items for St. Thomas Food Bank, and wear yellow! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

be from 3 to 7 p.m., and cost is $8 per person. A trip to Oklahoma was discussed, and Lucy Martinez made a motion that we go to Winstar on April 21. Mary Ann Kozel seconded the motion. About 20 members signed intent to go. If you did not get signed up, call one of the officers. Happy birthday to the March honorees: Willie Mae Becan, Inez Krivanek, and Joann Wilcox. Door prizes were won by Thereta Praslicka, Estelle Hurtik, Marie Keller, Carmen Adcock, Lupe Esparza, Betty Loyd, Betty Krenek, Hattie Scroggins, Ann Schneider, and Kitty Rippin. Hostesses Lucy Martinez, Thereta Praslicka, Helen Kubala, and Jean Sparkman served lunch to 52 members and one guest, Janet Basham. Come again. Fraternally, Evelyn Scaff, Secretary —SPJST—

Get Involved: Join Hands Day Hope your plans are coming along for Join Hands Day, which will be observed May 1. It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! Many lodges have already made plans for their project. The goal for this year is 55 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. Do not forget that the SPJST Home Office will offer a $100 incentive to local lodges who partner with the youth club or some other youth organization in their community. This money is to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator and on line with Join Hands Day. Following confirmation of receipt of your project from the Join Hands Day association, the Supreme lodge will then forward a check to the local lodge. If you need more information for planning your project, please contact State FAC Chester Jenke at cejenke@wmconnect.com., phone (210) 413-3053 or me. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. Flag Day Essay Contest All SPJST youth between the ages entering kindergarten to high school senior are encouraged to enter this year’s Flag Day Contest. This annual contest promotes patriotism and creative literacy. There is also a coloring contest for members ages eight and younger. Several prizes will be

awarded in both the Flag Day contest and the coloring contest. The winners of the coloring contest will be announced at the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony in Temple on Monday, June 14. The overall winner of the Flag Day Essay Contest will be asked to come and read their winning essay at the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony in Temple. The deadline for all entries is May 31.

Camp Tee-Shirts Available This year’s camp tee-shirts are available for sale. The deadline to order is May 31. Tee-shirts will be delivered to the purchaser at summer camp, or we can have them mailed to you for an additional charge. Leaders-in-Training Retreat June 11-13 The Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Retreat will be held at Cooper Farm and will be a full weekend of events this year. The retreat will start at 7 p.m. on Friday and be over at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.

This will be an opportunity for all LITs to learn what their duties are at camp and to learn what responsibilities they are accepting by being an LIT. LITs must attend in order to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders in their youth clubs throughout the year. Who is eligible to be a Leader-InTraining? LITs must be high school age — that means they must be entering at least the ninth grade this fall — and be considered trustworthy and responsible by their youth leader and district youth counselor. Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the weather was cold and windy on the outside, but as members entered Lodge 80, Holland, they knew it was spring time. Thank you, officers and members, for your great hospitality. The food was absolutely delicious. It was so kind of you to give the table decorations to the lucky ones sitting nearest each spring bouquet. Thank you also to your members

Name__________________________________________________________________ Age______________ Lodge______________ “Historically many groups celebrated various rituals of planting and Spring is in the Air gathering in the late spring. We know they were as happy as we are with the return of spring and abundance.” ince ancient times, Spring has been considered a time of rebirth and renewal. The snows of winter melt away, flowers bloom, and all As Dr. Wernecke mentions, Spring was a time of celebration and the world seems new again. For many of us, it is a reason to spend more joy. For primitive humans, the long end to the harsh Winter months time outdoors and of course there’s always spring break to enjoy! meant a second chance at life.

S

This year, we observed the first day of Spring on Saturday, March 20. The day is significant for reasons having to do with the position of the sun. On March 20, 2010, at precisely 12:32 p.m. Texas time, the Sun crossed directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment was known as the “vernal equinox.” Translated, vernal means “belonging to the spring” and equinox means “equal night.” Because the Sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world on that day.

People have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years. There is no shortage of rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of Spring. Many early civilizations celebrated for the basic reason that their food supplies would soon be restored. The date is significant in Christianity because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. It is also probably no coincidence that early Egyptians built the Great Sphinx pyramid so that it points directly toward the rising Sun on the day of the vernal equinox.

Dr. D. Clark Wernecke, Executive Director of the Gault School of Archaeological Research in San Marcos, Texas, shares his insight into the rituals of Spring.

Dr. Wernecke concludes with, “Hunting and gathering in the spring was easier and people put on the weight they’d lost over the winter. If I had to go out on a limb I’d say that any rituals observed were probably short and to the point. The coming of Spring brings hope to hunters and gatherers but they cannot sit back and celebrate until well after it has started.” The rituals and meanings have changed many times over the years, but the joy of Spring is universal. So celebrate this season in any many that suits you. Spend time with friends outdoors. Clean out your room or the family garage. who donated door prizes. Thank you to all the youth who attended. The attendance of the youth was rather small this year due to spring break and other activities. However, those who attended seemed to have a good time. We had youth attending from Elgin, Granger, Cyclone, Taylor, Seaton, Beyersville, Holland, Morgan’s Point, and Round Rock. It was good to have two of our newest youth leaders attending the meeting, Jessica Fernandez of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point and Jennifer McCarthy of Lodge 187, Round Rock along with youth leaders Joyce Bowen, Emilie Tischler, Joan Vanicek, Cristy Girod, Lynette Talasek, Tammy Pechal, Frank Horak, and Christine Festa. Thank you, youth member Justin Kraatz, for spending your birthday with us. Hope we didn’t embarrass you too much when everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to you. Thank you to all the youth who participated in the Easter egg contest. You all did a great job. What talent you all have! I am very proud of each of you. Winners were: Ages Kindergarten to 8 1st—Zoe Talasek (Seaton) 2nd—Chase Alexander (Seaton) 3rd—Kayla Wuensche (Beyersville) Ages 9 to 11 1st Allison Janke (Holland) 2nd Brady Alexander (Seaton) 3rd Shelby Horak (Holland)

Congratulations to the youth clubs who received incentive awards for meeting the 2009 quota. I would also like to thank each of you for re-electing me as your DYC along with Janet Lyon and Carol Tallas as my assistants. We have a great time planning activities for you. We always welcome your ideas and suggestions. Congratulations also to Kayla Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville and Justin Kraatz of Lodge 47, Seaton for being chosen as the District Two Flag Bearers. After the business meeting and awards presentations, the youth were ready to hit the outdoors. There they found a handsome Easter Bunny being led by our District Two Queen Nic-

hole Festa. That bunny sure did leave a lot of colorful eggs. Everyone’s baskets were overflowing. I hope each of you got a prize egg. And, thanks to those who shared their chocolate with me. Thank you to Holland Youth Leader Frank Horak and the youth club for preparing the eggs, E.J. Anderson, and Janet and Carol for getting it all organized. It was a great day. District Two Youth leaders will be meeting on April 17. If you have any ideas or concerns, please get with me or your youth leader, and we will bring it up at our meeting. Hope you have a great spring and are gearing up for a great SPJST summer! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Lodge 48 Beyersville Youth Club reports on March meeting

Our youth meeting was held on Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 5 p.m. There were six members, three adults, and three visitors present. We talked about our summer trip and decided that we wanted to go to a beach resort. We will need to earn about $2,500 to help pay for the trip. We will hold a garage sale on April 10. We will accept donations for the garage sale. Please call Donna (512) 365-5717 if you have items to donate. We played games after the meeting and then we ate barbecue chicken made by my dad, John Wuensche.

Next Meeting—April 12 Our next meeting will be held on Monday, April 12 at 6 p.m. On March 21, my brother Trent and I attended the District Two Spring Meeting. I was asked to be the District Two Flag Bearer. Thank you, Patsy, for asking me. I look forward to serving as flag bearer. The Easter Bunny was there and hid lots of eggs. I found eggs and won seven prizes. My lucky day! I also won third place in the egg decorating contest. Our youth club received an award in the incentive program. Thank you, Melanie, for taking a picture of me and Trent. Fraternally, Kayla Wuensche, age 9 —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth serves the team home

The winter volleyball season for Amanda Hoggard’s team, the Gators, was not as successful as she had hoped. The team struggled to win matches, although the games were close e v e r y week. Finally, the last two w e e k s brought them success as they won the match against the first place team followed by a season finale match win against the second place team. Amanda took over serving in the final tie-breaking game, with the task of needing to score three consecutive points. She handled the stress well, making sure each of her serves were on target. The

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

team rallied behind her serves and brought the win home. The team broke into a celebration around Amanda. She was so excited to lead the team to victory! Amanda switched from soccer to volleyball last year. It is fun seeing how much she has improved in two short seasons. Her next season starts soon, and she cannot wait to get back on the court. I am glad she has found a sport she enjoys as much as I like soccer. Go, Gators! Fraternally, Sammy Hoggard —SPJST—

Lodge 185, New Braunfels youth: snow much fun on spring break

Dear Readers, I just took a trip for spring break to Ruidoso, New Mexico. My family and I went skiing at Ski Apache. Ski Apache is owned and run by the Mescalaro Apache Indians in New Mexico. We skied on March 14, 15, and half a day the 16th. On March 15, it started snowing while we were skiing. The snow stung my face as I went down the mountain. My dad and my aunt Eileen talked me into going close to the top of the mountain on the trail called Sierra

17

Blanca. A couple of times the trail dropped off to a black diamond trail. One of the black diamond trails was called Screaming Eagle. What a name! I had a lot of fun. It was the best time of my life. It was also my first time to see snow. I had a blast! The pictures below are of my mom, dad, and I skiing and my dad and I on one of the ski lifts. Fraternally, Leah McDonald —SPJST—

Lodge 202 Jourdanton assistant youth leader recognized

My mom, Sandra Hoggard, assistant youth leader for Lodge 202, Jourdanton, has done it again! She was recently recognized for her involvement in volunteer activities at her work during the annual Team Tesoro meeting in February. She was one of 22 Tesoro employees spotlighted, and she received a certificate for her significant contribution—volunteering more than 30 hours to company-sponsored community events. As an accounting manager for Tesoro, she sets a great example to her employees by participating in Meals on Wheels, the mentor program, bi-monthly blood drives, food bank sorting and packaging, and many donation drives, just to name a few. My brothers and I are very proud of her award and like helping when we can. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth: foot-stomping, good time

At the last youth meeting, members of all ages got in on the fun of trying to burst each other’s balloon. Even Youth Leader Regina House joined in on the fun. The youth joined the adult lodge for a wonderful lunch, providing side dishes and desserts to accompany the fried chicken. During the business meeting, the group discussed plans for an Easter basket decorating contest and egg hunt for the April meeting. Discussions also centered on a

youth outing, with the group deciding it was time for a trip to the San Antonio Zoo in May. The members were reminded of the many important dates coming up including YAD and camp. Every meeting is a new adventure, and we are looking forward to the upcoming events! Thank you to our leaders for organizing events that keep us active and involved. Give plastic eggs a second life as eggimals!

Whether the kids are age 4 or 40, they’ll be smiling when they see the eggimals on your Easter tables. Your plastic eggs may have turned into cats, mice, pigs, skunks or even owls. They’re cheaper by the dozen than

Page 20

chocolate eggs and better for your teeth. All you need to make them is some glue, tiny pom-poms for noses, a little felt, a black permanent marker for eyes and whiskers, plus a threeinch piece of yarn and one pipe cleaner. You could be creative on your own or download a template at FamilyFun.com. Use Crafter’s Pink glue or hot glue to attach the features. For the pig, curl a 4-inch piece of pipe cleaner around a pencil to make the tail, then glue it in place so it stands up. It has pink ears and feet, drawn-on eyes and a nose. For the mouse's tail, glue on a 3-

inch length of yarn, knotted at the end. It has round ears. For the skunk, glue the rear half of the stripe to the tail, then glue the tail and front of the stripe to the body. For the cat, make pointed ears, a tail, and a pom-pom nose. Draw its whiskers and mouth with the marker. After assembling your materials, it takes about an hour to create your herd of eggimals. Make some stand up the tall way and some the short way. They make nice decorations, but making them can also be an Easter afternoon project with your children. Dad will probably have an idea or two. —SPJST—

As always, they will be selling grilled cheese sandwiches and the old-fashioned hamburgers every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. The Booster Club is now selling gift certificate booklets containing six coupons for $20.
