S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living in Taylor Celebrates Grand Opening of New Addition
Residents enjoy new additions to S.P.J.S.T. facility
After six years of waiting lists and hallways chock-full with residents, the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility has room to breathe, and style to breathe in. Following the completion of the construction of 36 new apartments and the renovation of the older facility to blend the two into a seamless edifice, residents are enjoying the look as well as the feel of the place, though they may have a little farther to walk. According to Assisted Living Director Jane Stauffer, that’s the only complaint she’s heard from the residents, who were patient through the nearly 10-month construction period to the point of impressing her. “From time to time we’d hear about the noise,

Bloomin’ Temple This Weekend
SPJST will host the car show at this weekend’s Bloomin’ Temple
festival on Saturday, April 10. We are anticipating about 125 of the most beautiful cars to roll into downtown Temple. There’s still time to enter. Forms are available at www.bloomintemple.com. Spectators are always welcome! All proceeds from the car show will benefit Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. We are planning a silent auction and several other fun activities. And, it will be an entire weekend of festival fun. See the back page for details or visit the website. Congratulations, Easter Coloring Contest Participants! Thank you to our young members who entered the Vestnik’s Easter coloring contest. We had many entries and our judges had a very difficult time determining the winners. Congratulations to: Ages 3 to 6 1st - Briley Strey Lodge 107, Floresville 2nd - Bailee Coufal Lodge 1, Fayetteville 3rd - Brooke Newsom Lodge 29, Taylor Ages 7 to 10 1st - Shelby Horak Lodge 80, Holland 2nd - Sarah Bellanger Lodge 97, Placedo 3rd - Cammi Teplicek Lodge 49, Rowena
SPJST Easter Fun Thanks to Lodge 88, Houston and Lodge 6, Cottonwood for their awesome hospitality on March 27 and 28. David and I thoroughly enjoyed their Easter parties. Great people delicious food - lots of fun!
Youth Leaders Workshop SPJST’s youth leaders camped out at SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm on March 27 and 28. They were the first to stay in the newly constructed cabins. ENC Director Ronnie Pflughaupt gave David and me a tour of the facility. Wow! I am impressed, and I think our youth will very much enjoy visiting the new SPJST ENC this summer. One of the most exciting parts of the facility is “The Beast.” It’s a 40foot tower/ropes course. I cannot wait to get photos and videos of our youth in action experiencing “The Beast.” SPJST Versus S.P.J.S.T. We are often asked why SPJST sometimes appears with periods between the letters. SPJST - the fraternal life insurance benefit society is simply SPJST with no periods. But, it is S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes and S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living. The rest homes were, from the beginning, and remain, separate corporate entities with their own operating charter. So that’s the difference between SPJST and S.P.J.S.T.!
Sincere Sympathy Heartfelt sympathy is extended to Certificate Issue Technician Doris Tyroch and Accounting Clerk Dorothy Stuchly and their families. Doris’ and Dorothy’s mother Otillie Tyroch, 86, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Services were held Saturday, March 27 in Seaton. I also want to send belated sympathy to Human Resources Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky and her family. Debbie’s mother, Juanita Bales, 83, passed away on November 20, 2009. —SPJST—

NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism
Susan Skrabanek named Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Susan Skrabanek, a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of March 29, 2010. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Teresa J. Rasmussen. “As a Fraternal MVP, Susan Skrabanek embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Skrabanek has been a member of SPJST for 50 years. She served her lodge as hall manager, overseeing the everyday operations, rentals, maintenance, cleaning, and ensuring that all rules and regulations of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission were enforced. Skrabanek managed all the preparations—from sending out invitations to ordering the food—for special lodge recognition events. She also chaired a fundraiser for the Ben and Martha Trcalek Endowed Scholarship Fund. As an SPJST sales agent, Skrabanek identified and secured new members for the lodge. Even as she promoted the benefits of life insurance, Skrabanek strived to convey to new members the essence of what it means to be “fraternal,” encouraging members to get involved in the lodge and take advantage of the fraternal benefits available for adults as well as youth members. Skrabanek served as District One Youth Counselor, promoting youth activities and involvement for six youth clubs in the district. She chaired the SPJST Insurance Committee and was a member of the Special Structure Committee. Skrabanek also served as reporter for the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) Board of Directors. She assisted with a fundraiser at Cooper Farm and built bird houses for the bluebird trail at the ENC. In her community, Skrabanek assists with the annual Go Texan fundraiser and secures applicants for the scholar-
ship at Caldwell High School. Skrabanek also assists and participates in the Caldwell FFA Booster Club fundraisers for scholarships. She assembled fruit bags for distribution at a local nursing home on Valentine’s Day, in addition to visiting and playing dominoes and bingo with the residents. Skrabanek collects aluminum pull tabs to support Temple’s Ronald McDonald House. She makes items for American soldiers in Iraq through the high school’s HOPE Club and the local SPJST youth club. She also participated in the Evening Lions Club fundraiser basketball game against the Harlem Globetrotter Ambassadors. Skrabanek is a lifetime member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, the Christian Sisters organization, and assists in preparation of meals at funerals. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.
About NFCA The 124-year-old NFCA unites 68 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 9.3 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteerservice opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $353 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2008 alone, contributed almost $424 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 94 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. From the President’s Office
Minutes of a Special Meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge held by Telephone Conference from the Home Office in Temple, Texas, on February 25, 2010
The meeting was called by President Brian Vanicek for the purpose of considering a change in the custodian of SPJST securities.
The meeting was convened by Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick at 10:15 a.m., and the seven directors participated by telephone conference. A roll call was taken and the following Supreme Lodge members acknowledged their presence: Brian Vanicek, President Gene McBride, Vice President Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Donnie Victorick – District One Supreme Lodge Chairman Bobby Wuensche – District Two
Johnnie Krizan – District Three Billy Rollwitz – District Four Larry W. Pflughaupt – District Five Michael Ahlstrom – District Six Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Robert J. Bayer – District Seven
Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas was present to participate in the meeting.
Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska reported that Charles Schwab and Company is current custodian for SPJST securities. He reported that during the regular Texas Department of Insurance audit, the examiner pointed out the need to amend the custodial agreement. Consequently, SPJST has been looking at other companies to serve as our custodian of securities. He reported we looked at several options including banks, a bank sub-custodian, and other clearing corporations and have a recommendation. Secretary-Treasurer Mikeska recommended Fidelity. The following motion was made by Director Bayer:
1. That we change the custody and brokerage services account from Charles Schwab and Company to Fidelity Brokerage Services and National Financial Services (collectively Fidelity).
2. That a resolution is hereby adopted authorizing the Supreme Lodge officers to enter into an agreement for broker-dealer and custody services with Fidelity and to execute all documents necessary to enter into agreement with Fidelity and all documents necessary to effect the moving of securities. Director Rollwitz seconded the motion. After allowing time for questions and discussion, a roll call vote was taken and the motion carried unanimously.
(The Resolution dated February 25, 2010, was formally adopted and included in the original minute book.)
President Vanicek moved adjournment, Director Wuensche seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
Fraternally submitted, Leonard Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer —SPJST—
Project Update: Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden
The City of Killeen, Texas — by virtue of its proximity to Fort Hood — is an army town. The military presence represents the single-most defining characteristic of this community. On Thursday, November 5, 2009, gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood. Thirteen people were killed, and 32 were wounded. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned from them. That afternoon, 13 Americans were sacrificed for their country — not on the distant soils of Iraq or Afghanistan — but down the road in Fort Hood, Texas. Thanks to the heroic intervention of two Fort Hood police officers, the rampage was brought to an end. Our hearts go out to the families of the soldiers and the civilian worker who were killed. May they rest in peace. In the aftermath of this tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. This site would serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. The actual idea for establishing the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden was conceived by SPJST State Field Representative Hiram Dixon. Brother Dixon himself served in the United States Army from 1969 until 1972, during which time he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. Working as partners with the City of
Killeen, SPJST is spearheading the drive to build the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. Initial plans include a memorial pavilion nestled among trees and outlined by walkways in a serene and picturesque setting. Killeen Mayor Timothy Hancock is facilitating the meeting and review processes that will determine the exact name, location, design and budget of the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. Based on the preliminary discussions and renderings, it is clearly evident that the garden will be a place of beauty and one that pays dutiful respect to the lives of our fallen brothers and sisters. Since we announced plans on February 10 to facilitate the project, the response has been gratifying. Fraternal societies, veterans groups and civic organizations on the local and state level have been stepping forward to pledge their support. On the corporate level, Home Depot has committed to the project. SPJST recently set up a website: forthoodgarden.com and a Facebook group — Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden — to convey information about the project. Both of these efforts are works in progress . . . It’s a challenge at this stage of the game to communicate the details of the project as so many details still need to be addressed and decided. We are working to collect email addresses and/or telephone numbers from family members in order to keep them informed of the process. Thank you for your kind attention and support. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President —SPJST—

District Three presents fall meeting minutes
(Please note that these minutes are stachy due to no district secretary at the time of the meeting.)
District Three held its fall fun day on October 25, 2009, at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Brother Gordon Hubenak, District Three President, called the meeting to order. Everyone was asked to stand for the posting of colors by District Three Flag Bearers. Raiven Jackson of Lodge 6, Cottonwood led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Gage Cornell of Lodge 154, Fort Worth led the youth motto. Gordon Hubenak, president of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, welcomed everyone on behalf of the lodge. Brother Hubenak (in the absence of Sister Gayle Krengel, first vice president) gave the response. Reading and approval of the minutes were disposed of due to the death of District Three Secretary Mary Karlik in August 2009 and the transition of files. Brother Hubenak (in the absence of Sister Mary Steinman, treasurer) presented the written report submitted by Sister Mary Steinman. Motion was made to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion passed. A copy of her report is made part of the official minutes. Brother Hubenak asked lodges if there was anyone who would want to host the Spring 2010 meeting. No lodge would commit. Adult members wearing costumes were judged, and winners announced. A motion was made (name of person was misplaced) that the district donate $1,000 to Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club member Katelyn Daniel

Congratulations to SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood member Dr. R.L. (Bob) Uzzel. On March 5, 2010, he was inducted into the Harry A. Williamson Masonic Hall of Fame during the 2010 Phylaxis Society Convention held at the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Arkansas in Pine Bluff. Phylaxis Masonic Hall of Fame honors all “regular” Freemasons who have contributed outstanding service to Prince Hall Freemasonry. The Phylaxis Society is an international organization of Prince Hall Freemasons dedicated to studying the life of Prince Hall and researching the history of Prince Hall Freemasonry. The Phylaxis Society was designed to create a bond of union for Masonic writers and to educate Universal Freemasonry about Prince Hall Freemasonry. The Society has become the leader in its field: encouraging Prince Hall Masonic Study and stimulating the writing of accurate and interesting articles. In this manner it fosters the close, human relationship that is the ideal of Freemasonry. The Society in no way interferes with the
legislative and ritualistic affairs of any Masonic body. The Phylaxis Society’s Hall of Fame is named for Harry A. Williamson, the founder of the Harry A. Williamson Collection on Black Masonry at the Schombug Center for Research on Black Culture, the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library. Dr. Uzzel’s Masonic record includes memberships in Pride of Ennis Lodge No. 420, Free and Accepted Masons (Prince Hall Affiliation) in Ennis, Texas; Dale Consistory No. 31, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in Dallas, Texas; and Zakat Temple No. 164, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Dallas, Texas. Ladies Circle Quilt to Commemorate Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s 100th anniversary
A couple of quilters came up with the idea to put together a quilt for Lodge 92, Fort Worth’s 100th birthday celebration party. This idea happened about three years ago. Mary Ann Kozel and Evelyn Scaff decided to use SPJST’s lone star. They searched all over for a true five-point star pattern that they liked. When they could not find one they liked, they recruited Joe Kozel, Mary Ann’s husband, and Carl May, Evelyn’s son-in-law to create a star pattern. Joe created a small, fivepoint star pattern, and Carl created one large, star pattern. After much discussion at the Ladies Circle meeting, it was decided that we would use the small star pattern on all of the books for the quilt — more hand quilting! Mary Ann and Evelyn shopped many fabric stores for the perfect material to make the quilt. Both ladies worked many hours piecing the star blocks together. There are 15 fivepoint stars on the quilt. The quilt was then sandwiched and put into a quilt frame at Evelyn’s house. It was time to start quilting this beautiful piece of art. It took about one and one-half
years to complete the hand quilting by both women. Once the binding of the quilt was complete, it was presented at the Ladies Circle meeting. The Ladies Circle was amazed at the beauty of the quilt with all of the hand quilted details throughout. The next order of business was to give the quilt a name. After much discussion, it was unanimously decided to name the handmade quilt, “Stars Over Texas.” We feel that anyone who sees this beautiful quilt will want to buy a chance to win it. The quilt is queen-sized and measures 85 inches by 100 inches. The drawing will take place on September 18 at Lodge 92, Forth Worth’s 100th birthday celebration. You do not have to be present to win. For ticket information, please contact Gloria Farek (817) 535-9050; Evelyn Scaff (817) 453-3915. Checks can be made payable to Ladies Circle Lodge 92 and mailed to Mary Ann Krivanek, 432 Boat Club Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76135. Thank you for your support. The distance hasn’t kept the facility from adding new residents to the rooms; in three months, 14 new guests have come on board, excited about the new facility’s Italian villa appearance and its numerous amenities. “One thing I’ve been saying for the last couple of months is that we’re the best-kept secret in Taylor,” Stauffer said. “I’ve had people who have lived here all their lives who are just now
calling because they’re seeing ads in the newspaper. It’s hard to believe they haven’t seen it in the years we’ve been here.” One of the reasons of the facility’s unintended secrecy is the lack of a thorough advertising campaign around the time the facility first opened. Most residents are familiar with the Rest Home, Stauffer said, but in six years, Taylor has heard little about the Assisted Living Facility since it has maintained capacity and a long waiting list. “Now with the new addition and there being more articles and photos in the paper, people seem to be all of a sudden aware of it,” Stauffer said. The S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Facility will officially opened with a ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon, March 25. Stauffer expects the facility to be filled to capacity by the end of the year. —SPJST—

What You Leave Behind

Longevity: longtime S.P.J.S.T. staff serve elderly with love
To many people, nursing homes are not a place to look for happiness. At the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, currently Taylor’s only nursing home, it’s not difficult to find contented residents and devoted employees. With a staff of nearly 100, the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home employs 75 nursing home workers and 20 attendants in the recently expanded assisted living home, most of whom are fulltime. The staff includes certified nursing assistants, nurses, administrative nurses, activity workers, maintenance, cafeteria staff including professionally trained chefs, and laundry and housekeeping. Certified nursing assistants have the most direct contact with residents and give about 85 percent of the care provided in nursing, according to Director Woody Richards. He said that one of the biggest challenges of the job is meeting individualized needs and preferences since each resident is unique. Richards said that he enjoys spending time with residents and talking, especially since some have witnessed a multitude of change over their lifetime. “My personal favorite part (of my job) would be the daily contact with each of the residents here and watching how our staff lovingly treats each of the residents, the compassion that they have for people that are very elderly,” said Richards, adding that as a private non-profit, the S.P.J.S.T. is able to provide a good work environment and benefits for employees. “I love working here,” said Victoria Finn, who has worked on hall four
since she started more than 30 years ago. “I’d work another 30 years if I could.” Finn, who has worked at the S.P.J.S.T. longer than any other employee, works three days a week serving the 18 residents on her hall, including assisting with bathing, clothing, and feeding. She says the biggest challenge of her job is making sure the residents eat and drink enough at meals. “I have a lot of longevity here,” said Richards, explaining that S.P.J.S.T.’s loving atmosphere is what seems to keep staff and residents alike. “I think (the staff stays because of their) love and compassion for humans.” According to Richards, the norm for a nursing home facilitator is 12 to 18 months. He has been there over 20 years. His assistant has been there for 25 years, and the head of maintenance has been there for 28 years. In the assisted living facility that opened in December 2003, there are at least five of the original staff. “I love the residents,” said Eugene Zachary, who has been working at the S.P.J.S.T. since he was a teenager. “They’re good people with good stories.” “I enjoy the people who speak Czech and meeting their families,” said Finn, who greeted a number of people that passed by during her interview. She added, laughing, “My only complaint (about working here) is there’s not enough Czech music!” “We get a lot of feedback from families about how we care for their loved ones,” said Richards. “It’s just a good environment for people.” —SPJST—

The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home and Assisted Living Facility are two of Taylor’s best-kept secrets. While the non-profit has enjoyed continued success throughout its history, it still remains tucked away on the east side of town behind Sonic and Town West Church of Taylor, its beauty and outstanding service unknown to many residents. The history of the facilities begins with the founding of the fraternal benefit society SPJST, formed by Czech immigrants in Texas and officially chartered July 1, 1897. The original intent of the organization was to provide economic security through the group’s fraternal life insurance plan. Every four years, SPJST meets for a convention to address needs and business practices. At the 1956 SPJST convention in Temple, delegates approved the establishment of a home for the aged to be called the “SPJST Rest Home.” Delegates allocated $100,000 for the construction of the home. The home was incorporated as a self-governing and independent nonprofit corporation under the control of seven directors, and no member of SPJST would have exclusive right on the basis of membership for admission into the home. Contrarily, membership in SPJST would be no requirement for admission into the Rest Home. Delegates agreed that the home was to be located in Central Texas and no farther north than Waco. The rest home committee inspected 19 sites in four cities and finally selected Taylor as the home’s future location. The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Board of Directors received incorporation status February 6, 1957, and construction of the first of many phases of the facility to come was completed December 1957. By March of the following year, the home had already accepted 20 residents. Fees for living in the home and services received was $100 a month, but could be reduced through social welfare programs for the elderly, which would provide the residents up to $60 per month for the fees. The system worked well, and the rest home
maintained a high occupancy. In 1961, a third wing was constructed and was quickly filled, and in 1969, a fourth wing was built. The Board of Directors used loans to help fund the construction, which were paid back in full. Additions to the existing facility — including a large activity center, a beauty salon, a chapel, two additional guest rooms and a modern kitchen — were added in 1998 and 2000, and did not need any supplemental funding. In 2002, the Board of Directors approved the construction of a 24-bed assisted living facility to cater to elderly residents who didn’t require the full care offered at the rest home, but were in need of assistance during daily activities. The facility was completed and opened with one resident in December 2003. The new facility was limited to three residents at first pending an inspection by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, which was finalized March 2004. The facility was quickly filled to capacity. The renovation of the Assisted Living Facility and the construction of 36 additional apartments to the complex, the most recent change, was completed early this year. The new facility features Italian villa-style interior design, libraries, meeting and socialization areas, original paintings and artwork, a dining hall, and an outdoor recreation area. Rest Home Director Woody Richards, who oversaw the rest home and the construction and renovation of the Assisted Living Facility, said it was a great dream of his to bring the project to Taylor. “Getting an assisted living facility was the dream to begin with,” Richards said. “When we built the first part of the 24-unit, I had planned for 36 at that time, but financially they didn’t feel we could do that, so we just did the 24 and borrowed sufficient funds to build these additional 36. “It’s a beautiful feeling because they say something to the effect of ‘It’s not what you can take with you when you leave, it’s what you can leave behind that’s important.’” —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth: Winter Fun . . . Now Ready for Summer
Hello, Members! I have had a very busy winter this year. I was super excited to get over 11 inches of snow, and I actually built a real snowman, like the ones in Indiana! It was the first time in my life that I had seen that much snow. We even had a tree bent perfectly over the road and cars were still driving underneath it. I was happy because we didn’t have to go to school either. In my opinion, it was the best day ever!
Our youth club has also been very busy this winter. We have been caroling at the IOOF Nursing Home. We also went bowling and did lots of different projects at our meetings. We are being reminded at every meeting to “make sure we get our YAD projects started as soon as possible.” I am excited about YAD and camp this year. I am going to have a busy and exciting summer, too, because I get to go to SPJST camp, Boy Scout
camp, and for the first time — church camp. I finally turned 13 in February so I am able to go to church camp. For spring break, I got to spend the whole week at my dad’s and that was fun to spend time with him. I hope everyone had a very, very, very happy Easter and has an extremely good year. NEED TO KNOW
Keeping Kids Safer Online
(SPM Wire) As the first generation to be born in the Internet age, today’s youth have a wealth of information at their fingertips. But with that information come potential hazards. That’s why the Federal Trade Commission has issued a free booklet entitled “Net Cetera: Chatting With Kids About Being Online.” With over a million copies distributed to schools and police departments, it provides a practical guide for parents to help children make better decisions online. “It’s proof that people want to have continuing conversations with their kids about communicating online,” David Vladeck, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, recently told Congress. Many of the tips in “Net Cetera” can be found online at OnGuardOnline.gov. —SPJST—

Reading for Success
(NewsUSA) - We read directions to perform a task, we read newspapers to be informed, and we read novels for the literary experience. Students are now required on state exams to have solid reading skills, and children who do not master “reading for different purposes” may have difficulty completing job-related tasks or reading for enjoyment as an adult. As students become sophisticated readers, their reading behaviors become more analytical and their thinking more abstract. They begin to dissect words for meaning while expanding their vocabularies. The more students read, the more
Page 25
enjoyable reading becomes and the more reading skills are used in real-life situations. These skills transfer to classroom learning and may lead to higher standardized test scores. To help parents nurture their children’s reading behaviors, the experts at Sylvan Learning, the leading provider of tutoring to students of all ages and skill levels, recommend that parents spend at least 10 to 15 minutes a day engaged in a language arts activity with children. Sylvan offers tips for encouraging “reading for different purposes”:
• Encourage reading a variety of texts, including books, poems, magazine articles, manuals, cookbooks and comic books.
• Look at every reading opportunity as a chance to strengthen comprehension skills.
• Identify a purpose for reading anything that includes text. This could be a menu, advertisement, recipe, textbook or a full-length novel. Is the purpose to entertain, inform, describe or persuade?
• Actively engage children in the reading process. Ask children to explain the main characters, plot, conflict, setting or lesson in a story. Encourage them to explain the purpose of an ad in a magazine. Ask your child to summarize the steps needed to complete a set of instructions or perform a task. • Encourage students to paraphrase

what they learn from everything that they read.
The Internet also provides reading opportunities for children of all ages. For example, www.BookAdventure. com is a free, Sylvan-created interactive reading motivation program. Children choose books from more than 7,000 titles, take short comprehension quizzes and redeem accumulated points for small prizes. Book Adventure also offers teacher and parent resources to help children develop a lifelong love of reading. Spring in the Czech Republic
Spring, the most beautiful season of year, is a time to fall in love. In the Czech Republic, spring traditions associated with love are still observed.
Kisses under the cherry tree Kiss the one you love on May 1 under a cherry tree in blossom! Tradition dictates that you’ll be health in the coming year, and that your love will stand the test of time. May 1 is celebrated in the Czech lands as a special day for all those in love.
The May pole In the Slovácko Region of the Czech Republic, the single men folk still head out into the woods on April 30 to fell the tallest and most attractive tree they can find, in order to make a May pole by the following morning. This is a traditional symbol of spring. They cut the crown off the tree and decorate the top with flowers and ribbons. The May pole must be guarded overnight, as losing it to a rival village could be very embarrassing indeed.
Burning of the witches Since time immemorial people have believed that there are days when evil forces have more powers than at other times of the year. This is particularly true of the night between April 30 and May 1, when fires were lit on raised ground to protect against witches. The tradition is still alive today: in the evening thousands of fires are lit across the Czech Republic, and women and girls dance around them dressed as witches. It is one of

lic is unpredictable and can change from sunny to snowy in a matter of minutes. It can also get windy and temperatures can vary quite a bit. Here is what the old Czech weather lore says about the month of April: April is half March and half May.
In April, up to nine kinds of weather can meet in a day.

This entitles you to six hamburgers or cheeseburgers, which amounts to you buying five burgers and getting one free burger. If you prefer cheeseburgers, this is an additional savings for you since the cheeseburgers cost a little more than hamburgers. These booklets are great gift ideas for birthdays, Motherʼs Day, Fatherʼs Day, Grandparents Day, anniversaries, etc. and especially for the regular customers who buy hamburgers each Friday.
