Brotherhood

Connecting youths and adults in neighborhood volunteering is the unique focus of JOIN HANDS DAY, a national day of service scheduled for Saturday, May 1. SPJST lodges and youth clubs across the state will participate in JOIN HANDS DAY by partnering with local community organizations. Sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies, JOIN HANDS DAY encourages people to form partnerships across generations to build greater mutual understanding, respect and trust. JOIN HANDS DAY is an opportunity for youths and adults to work side-by-side as they tackle projects and make life better in communities across America. “Many young people have little interaction with adults except their teachers and family members. And many adults know few young people outside their own circle of family and friends,” said SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. “JOIN HANDS DAY is one way to break down the barriers between the generations, while promoting volunteerism and making a difference in the community.” To create these partnerships, an important goal of JOIN HANDS DAY is for adult groups to invite youth organ-

izations, and youth groups to invite adult organizations to join them. Youth and adult groups participate together through the entire process, from the planning stages to the actual work; and people of all ages take on important responsibilities for the day. SPJST and other fraternal benefit societies throughout the country serve as community facilitators to help connect individuals and groups, identify neighborhood needs, and assist with community connections to civic leaders and dignitaries. Scheduled annually on the first Saturday in May, JOIN HANDS DAY can provide the first step in changing communication and cooperation in a neighborhood. This one-day event can introduce volunteering to different audiences of all ages and encourage participation together. Getting involved in JOIN HANDS DAY is easy. The key is finding youth or adult partners. SPJST can help. Contact SPJST by calling Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez at (800) 727-7578. For more information about JOIN HANDS DAY, visit the JOIN HANDS DAY Web site at www.joinhandsday.org. —SPJST—

Elgin Egg Hunt SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club sponsored a community Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 3 at the lodge hall. Many egg-hunting children and camera-toting parents showed up for the event that was coordinated by Lodge 18 Youth Leader Joyce Nelson and Lodge 18 President Ray Nelson. Hats off to Lodge 18 on a successful event! Watch for pictures in next week’s Vestnik.

For Better Mental Health: Do Housework, Gardening or Play a Sport Digging in the dirt has long been known as a way to relax and “let the world go away.” The great thing about working with plants: If it’s

your yard or garden, you can do whatever you want whenever you want and as fast or as slow as you want. Now, researchers at the University College in London say organizing your space (not dishwashing or other routines) for about 20 minutes can have the same stress-busting effect. They found that engaging in a domestic project for just 20 minutes at a time on one to three days a week reduced the odds of psychological distress by 24 percent. Sports activities showed the greatest psychological benefits and the clearest relationship between increased activity time and greater mental well-being. Whether a physical activity is on the tennis court, in the garden, or in the house, it reduces mental distress. Correction A photo on page 18 of last week’s April 7 Vestnik was incorrectly identified. Pictured in the bottom right photo playing the accordion is Buster Pavlicek of Lodge 18, Elgin. The Vestnik regrets the error.

Help Wanted? A woman approached the manager of a large department store. “Excuse me, are you planning on hiring any extra help?” she asked. “I’m sorry, we’re not,” the manager replied politely. “We already have all the staff we need.” “Good,” said the woman. “Then would you mind finding someone to wait on me?” —SPJST—

Readers Write

Lodge 80, Holland member responds to newspaper article

The following appeared in print after an interview of an American university Czech opera director (concerning Czech people and a Czech composer in 1866 Europe): . . . The regions of Moravia, Bohemia, and Slovakia were controlled by the Austro-Hungarian government, and everyone spoke German . . . “ . . . first composer of that era to write in Czech, his second language.”

I would like to respond. Some readers will get the impression that Czechs did not speak Czech. Czechs have always spoken Czech. Perhaps forced to speak German in public, they spoke Czech at home behind closed doors. In Europe, during the mid-1800s (and other eras), foreign

governments controlled Czech territories and imposed foreign language upon the Czech people Generally, Czechs spoke foreign language only when forced to do so. Everyone spoke German? Czechs spoke German only when required to do so! His second language? All Czechs considered the Czech language their first language. Foreign rulers considered Czech a second language. Foreign rulers tried to destroy the Czech language. Foreign rulers did not/could not destroy the Czech language. My grandparents and great-grandparents (two sets) were born in Moravia between 1841 and 1870. They arrived in Texas between 1871 and 1903. All of their children could speak Czech but not German. Perhaps the elder had been forced to speak German. Czech was their language. Darwin “Monk” Ivicic Czech-Moravian Descent Lodge 80, Holland —SPJST—

Dear Readers, Our youth club does not have any members celebrating birthdays in April. Even though it is not a birthday, I would like to share one celebration. It is for youth club member Trey Groce. Trey has been recovering from a bad accident for a very long time. Now that Trey is home free, a party in his honor will be held at the Expo Building in Caldwell on Saturday, April 10. Trey does not know about this party yet, but he will soon. Please join me in thanking God for the many blessings He bestowed to Trey and his family during this recovery period. Lodge 25, Ennis youth sells 480 boxes of Girl Scout cookies

Dear Readers, Our youth club has been so much fun this year. We do a craft almost every month, and we usually give them to someone who really appreciates them. For valentines, we made valentines for the troops. For Christmas, we made cards and ornaments to give out at the nursing home as we were caroling down the halls. We also put on a performance for the group and sang a variety of Christmas songs and danced to them. We are going to have an Easter egg hunt on April 3. I hope the weather is nice, and it isn’t raining, cold, or even worse, snowing!

I am also in the Girl Scouts, and for the third year in a row, I have made top seller in my troop for two years straight. This year, I sold 480 boxes! A lot of them went to members from SPJST. They are my favorite people ever! I walked into the Wednesday night social to deliver the cookies that were ordered and probably sold 30 extra boxes to people I hadn’t asked to buy some. It’s a good thing we had some extras. Well, that’s it for now. Until next time! Fraternally, Tori Motley, age 14 —SPJST—

Fun seasonal activities for kids

(StatePoint) Between the computer, television and video games, it can be difficult motivating kids to partake in fun activities that don’t involve sitting and staring. But with a little direction and some good ideas, a child’s interest in more active, stimulating recreation can be heightened. And all the while, the bond between child and parent or grandparent can be strengthened.

Enjoy Nature Together “My grandmother taught me that nature isn’t something only enjoyed on a vacation or a drive,” says Sharon Lovejoy, a grandmother of four and author of “Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars,” a trusty new book filled with imaginative children’s activities. “Experiencing nature together means you open yourselves to the myriad mysteries unfolding around you.” For many children, outdoor adventures can take place right in their backyard. By creating a backyard explorer’s kit or attracting butterflies to your garden by making it critterfriendly, kids can be completely engaged in outdoor activities. Or how about teaching them to make a solar oven and then enjoy treats baked in it? There even are indoor pursuits involving nature, including planting everything from flowers to pumpkins to peanuts.

dez. RIGHT PHOTO: Visiting at the youth club meeting held on April 5, 2010, are, left to right, Ryan Mathis, Jonathan Fernandez, and Matthew Fernandez.

Find a Meteor Shower While there are many natural phenomena children can enjoy, Lovejoy touts the wonder of meteor shows, particularly how they give children opportunities to enjoy the outdoors at night. “While you’re waiting, tell your child a story about these sparkling pieces of heaven,” says Lovejoy, who even provides a calendar of annual

meteor showers in her book. If you can’t find enough sparkling objects in the sky, try making your own firefly lantern together.

Fun in the Kitchen Generally speaking, any activity that involves eating is going to be appealing to children -- and the spring and summer are great times for recipes fea-

turing seasonal fruits and vegetables. By choosing some fun cooking and baking ideas and engaging your children in the process, families can keep busy for long periods of time, something especially appealing on rainy days. Whether their responsibilities involve mixing ingredients or timing dishes in the oven, children will be rewarded with the fruits of their labor. Find Ideas Online Finding good ideas for kids’ activities is tricky. Turn their love of sitting in front of the computer into fun in the physical world. There are many online resources providing calendars and ideas for seasonal kids’ activities. Engaging sites like www.123child.com and www.theideabox.com offer recipes, crafts and games. Visit www.sharonlovejoy.com for gardening and outdoor ideas and for information about her book, “Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars.” With many parents scrambling to stimulate fertile young minds, good ideas are key in the quest for family fun. —SPJST—

Czech is a Slavic language, closely related to Slovak and Polish. Spoken by over 10 million people as a first language and at least 6 million who use it as a second language (mainly in Slovakia), Czech is one of two official and defacto languages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words. The only tricky sound to watch for in Czech is this ‘ř’ letter. It’s like putting a trilled ‘r’ and ‘su’ in “pleasure” together to make up a ‘rrrzh’ sound. The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words. a like ‘u’ in “cup” [uh]

The collection, totaling some 500 documents, consists of various estimates and intelligence products, including a memorandum published on August 2, 1968, warning policymakers that Moscow would have completed military preparations for an invasion in about two weeks time – that is, 18 days before the invasion. A DVD containing the documents will be provided to the news media and all attendees, and the collection will be made available to the public on the CIA web site. To highlight the document release, the symposium will feature scholarly discussion on the intelligence support provided to the Johnson Administration and on the lessons that can be drawn from the 1968 invasion for strategic warning and the role of intelligence in today’s world. The symposium will feature presentations by Admiral Bobby Inman, former CIA Deputy Director; Ambassador Robert Hutchings, Dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs; and Peter Clement, CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence. The agenda is 12:30 p.m. Welcome by Mark Updegrove, Director, LBJ Library; 12:30 to 12:50 p.m. - Opening Remarks by Admiral Bobby Inman, Former Deputy Director CIA; 12:50 to 1 p.m. - Introduction of Keynote Speaker Mark Updegrove, Director, LBJ Library; 1 to 1:45 p.m. Keynote Address: Strategic Warning and the Role of Intelligence by Ambassador Robert Hutchings (Dean, LBJ School of Public Affairs); 1:45 p.m. - Break; 2 to 3:15 p.m. - Panel Discussion No. 1 - The Soviet Invasion from an Intelligence Analyst Perspective - Panel chair: Donald Steury (CIA Historian) and Panel members (former analysts): John Bird, Doug MacEachin, Tom Troy; 3:15 p.m. Break; 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. - Panel Discussion No. 2 - Strategic Warning in

Have your lodge* participate in Join Hands Day on May 1, 2010

*and get $100 to apply towards your project!

Mark May 1, 2010, on your calendar and make plans for your lodge to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by Americaʼs Fraternal Benefit Societies in cooperation with the National Fraternal Congress of America. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs get involved on this special day!

The first step is for your lodge to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Who better to work with that your lodgeʼs youth club! In the event that your lodge doesnʼt have a youth club, itʼs an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You will also want to involve another community service, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas.

MAY 2, 2009

SPJST lodges that conduct Join Hands Day projects in 2010 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the Home Office. The incentive will be sent to the lodge following the registration of the event on the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org. For assistance, please contact the SPJST Fraternal Department at 800.727.7578. Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 10 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000.
