Bloomin’ Funds for FHLMG

Thanks to everyone who visited Temple, Texas, on April 10 for the

SPJST Car Show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival. What an amazing event that featured 154 vehicles lining Avenue A between Fifth and Ninth Streets. It was quite a spectacle! We had several activities like a silent auction and raffles that raised more than $3,000 for Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. The weekend was beautiful, and the festival’s attendance was more than 12,000 people. Mark your calendar for next year’s Bloomin’ Temple to be held April 8, 9, and 10, 2011. Welcome, Baby Avree Congratulations to SPJST Accounting Clerk Lori Slack and husband Danny on the birth of daughter Avree Raye on March 22, 2010. Avree weighed s e v e n pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20 inches long. Welcoming Avree home was big sister Alexandra who is two years old. Proud grandparents are Ray and Doris Coots of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Kelly and Sue Moore of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point; and Danny Slack of Lodge 87, Temple and wife Stephanie. Grandmother Sue serves as SPJST Imaging/Accounting Clerk, and aunt Lisa Kirby is SPJST Assistant Data Manager.

Get Well, SFR Dixon We extend get well wishes to Districts One, Two, and Five State Field Representative Hiram Dixon who underwent surgery last week. Best

wishes to SFR Dixon for a speedy recovery. Sales agents in Districts One, Two, and Five are asked to contact the Insurance Department at the SPJST Home Office for assistance at either (800) 727-7578 or (254) 7731575 or Field Operations Manager Philip McBee at (325) 647-1949.

Two Little Redheads in the Bluebonnets Thanks to New Business/Certificate Issue Technician Lisa Mills for sharing an adorable photograph of her children Payton and Makenna in a field of bluebonnets taken in East Bell County. The photo entitled “My two little red heads!” is entered in the 2010 Bluebonnet Contest at http://snap.kwtx.com/ Voting ends May 3. Best wishes to Lisa and her children in the contest!

Oh, Oh, Wrong Card A man who just opened a new store was pleased when he received a big bouquet of flowers. But he was puzzled when he read the card, which said, “Deepest Sympathy.” Just then, the florist called. It was the florist apologizing for having sent the wrong card. “Oh, that’s all right,” said the storekeeper. “I’m a business man and I understand how these things can happen.” “But I accidentally sent your card to a funeral party.” “What did it say?” he asked. “Congratulations on your new location,” was the reply. —SPJST—

NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism

Bessie Petr named Fraternal MVP

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Bessie Petr, a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, Texas—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of April 12, 2010. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Teresa J. Rasmussen. “As a Fraternal MVP, Bessie Petr embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Bessie has been a member of SPJST for more than 50 years. She served her lodge and SPJST as a fraternal life insurance sales agent, District Three Youth Counselor, youth leader, vice chairman of the SPJST Publication Committee, and hall rental chairperson. She was also actively involved in the Czech Culture Society that worked in partnership with the State Fair of Texas. She was a member of the Dallas Fraternal Council and assisted with fundraisers for several charities. Bessie was a member of WFLA Lodge 401, Dallas; KJZT of Dallas; Czech Krouzek Ladies Circle of Dallas; St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; St. Thomas Aquinas Altar Society; and Dallas Czech Singers. Through her guidance and direction in District Three Youth Achievement Day and SPJST’s summer camp program, Bessie encouraged young people to develop their skills, talents, and leadership abilities. She also urged youth to actively participate in national events such as Make a Difference Day, National Youth Service Day, and JOIN HANDS DAY. Bessie organized, promoted, and directed activities with the State Youth Director at district youth leaders’ workshops. She taught a traditional Czech

folk dance to be performed at events such as Heritage Day at the State Fair and various Czech festivals throughout the year. Bessie worked to raise awareness and promote attendance at the Sokol Slet that was held in Fort Worth. St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, Brady Center, Scottish Rite Hospital, and Buckner Orphanage were a few facilities where Bessie volunteered her time and provided leadership. She organized and directed many large fundraisers. In addition, Bessie made it a point to provide her time and resources directly after a funeral wake. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.

About NFCA The 124-year-old NFCA unites 68 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 9.3 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteerservice opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $353 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2008 alone, contributed almost $424 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 94 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. Lodge 15, Buckholts members enter Bloominʼ car show

lence in memory of our departed members. We especially wanted to remember longtime 50-year member Rudolph Zajicek who just recently passed away. All officers were present except for Vice President Scott Brandon. Second Vice President Adolph Jurca sat in for him. We had 14 members and four guests present. It was so good to have this many present for the meeting. President Williams welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. The secretary and treasurer gave their reports and were approved as read. In old business, several of our members attended the District Two Spring Meeting held at Lodge 80, Holland. It was very nice, and a delicious meal was served. We received a check in the amount of $280 for the new memberships we received into the lodge this past year. President Williams reminded us of Join Hands Day coming up on May 1. In new business, we are so happy to report that Lodge 15 members Jere and Jim Wallace participated in the SPJST Car Show held in conjunction with the Bloomin’ Temple Festival on April 10. They really did well— Jere and Jim won two large, beautiful trophies. We had the trophies on display at the meeting. There were 154 car entries in the show. At the meeting, we had a nice surprise. Lodge 15 member Lamerle Zajicek, a very outstanding artist, brought a painting that she had just completed of the old town of Zabcikville way back in the 1920s. It is a magnificent painting. We felt real honored as we were the first to view it. She plans to present it to the SPJST Czech historical museum for display. I know many will enjoy viewing it there. President Williams called a special meeting on April 7 as Historic Preservation Consultant Steph McDougal of McDoux Preservation located in the Houston/Galveston area would be here to meet with us once again. Officers of Lodge 15, Buckholts have been meeting with construction and fundraising professionals in preparation for a multi-phase building restoration project anticipated to kick off later this year. The eight-sided hall, one of fewer than two dozen “round” halls in the state, was recently designated as a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark by the Texas historical Commission. critical issues as well as make general improvements to the interior and exterior of the hall. A leaky roof and outdated electrical service are the first priorities. We also plan to make other changes that will improve the hall as a rental space. Our Buckholts lodge hall is a popular spot for wedding receptions, quinceaneras, and other events. The lodge also puts on monthly dances and its annual Hee Haw fundraiser which benefits the local fire department. Steph McDougal became familiar with the Buckholts hall while researching her master’s thesis in historic preservation at the University of texas at Austin. McDougal, who cofounded the non-profit Texas Dance Hall Preservation Inc., wrote her thesis about the round dance halls along Texas-36. She is helping us develop plans to raise the funds for the project through grants, appeals to individuals, and fundraisers such as the sale of commemorative paving stones. McDougal recruited restoration architect Sandy Stone of Heimsath Architects in Austin who is volunteering her services to create a handicappedaccessible entrance to the hall and design an area around the two front entrances for the paving stones. Stone also has offered to continue consulting with the lodge at a discounted rate. The project will be conducted in phases with the first phase being the replacement of the standing-seam

Under old business, a reminder was made to audit the youth club books. These were not available during the audit. Under new business, on a motion made by Ben Trcalek and seconded by Evelyn Henry, members voted to donate $100 to the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. The Join Hands Day project of cleaning the New Tabor Cemetery was finalized. This will be a combined effort of the adult and youth club members. We also finalized plans for the 50and 75-year pin celebration. This will be held at 2 p.m. on May 2 at New Tabor Hall. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. Lodge 32, Victoria to meet at food bank for Join Hands Day

We had an awesome potluck meal on April 8 . . . not a huge crowd – but a huge feast. Sorry some of y’all missed out on a great evening. At our meeting, we voted to keep meeting at 6:30 p.m. instead of changing due to daylight saving time. It just seems to work well with everyone, and we get home early! So remember – do not change the time! We also made the decision to volunteer at our local food bank for Join Hands Day. We are asking all youth club members and adult members to meet at the food bank on Saturday, May 1 at l p.m. It is a great feeling to help our community in this time of need.

SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby encourages lodges and youth clubs to assist with Paws Across Texas — a benefit to help pets and animals across Texas. SPJST lodges and youth clubs can help support animal shelters and veterinarian offices by soliciting food and money donations from the public and businesses in your community. Then, choose a shelter to benefit hungry and misfortunate animals to benefit. Through December 2010, let’s see just how much food and money we can collect as a fraternal organization. Each lodge/youth club is asked to keep a count on how many pounds of food and how much money it collects. Turn these numbers in to your district fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) who will notify the State FAC. The State FAC will tally a grand total at the end of the year. Lodge 88, Houston Member Celebrates 90th Birthday

Clarence Baca celebrated his 90th birthday in Cypress at the Hearthstone where he and wife Lou Baca currently reside. Clarence comes from a long line of polka musicians. His father John became the band leader in 1920. Their first radio performances were in 1926 to 1927 on Houston’s KPRC. They began recording in the 1930s on the Columbia OKEA and Brunswick labels and were known as “The Texas Polka Kings.” Clarence started his own band in 1962 and played until 1998. His home holds a fascinating collection from his family history as well as 78s recorded by some of his other favorite bands in that era. Of course, he has copies of his own recordings by The Clarence Baca Band. They include the “Corn Cockle Polka,” “Farmer’s Waltz,” “Grasshopper Polka,” and “Baca’s Waltz,” plus many more.

One of our favorite stories is about a gig where he drank a few beers to cool off. He was still warm so he removed his shirt and had a few more beers. Some female fans encouraged him to cool off even more (or maybe it was the beer) and soon he shed his teeshirt, and the fans went wild. This past year, Clarence planned a surprise birthday party for his wife Lou. It was quite an accomplishment as he could only borrow her address book when she was busy; he had to tell a few tall tales when she asked him where it was. The party was a great success, and Clarence took to the stage once again to play a few with the band. The legacy of the Baca family music tradition and his own 65 years in Texas polka music can be heard firsthand from Clarence. All you have to do is ask. But please don’t ask him to remove his tee-shirt — he just might. Clarence and wife Lou are members of Lodge 88, Houston. Submitted by, Jo Ann Buri Second Vice President —SPJST—

As always, you could feel the caring spirit of giving hearts assembled in the crowd watching the children collect their baskets. Lots of smiles and tears were shared by everyone feeling the impor-

Lodge 25, Ennis youth enjoys spring vacation

Dear Vestnik Friends, I went to the SPJST youth meeting in March. We played ping-pong. I played with my friends at the hall and ran around with them. My best snack was pretzels. I won Orel. I got a certificate for entering the tee-shirt contest. I went on vacation

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: spring fun

Dear SPJST Members, I attended the SPJST youth meeting Sunday, March 8. We did our Vestnik projects. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto. We discussed our Join Hands Day project. We decided to clean St. John’s Joseph Cemetery. The two door prizes were Lane Slovak—candy and Jacob Mraz—a dollar. Youth Leader Betty handed out the certificates who entered the tee-shirt contest which were Misty and me. Betty drew out a bunch of door prizes given by John. The prizes were footballs and Orels. Thank you, John! We had snacks—chips, pretzels, cookies, cold drinks, and Capri Sun. We played ping pong. My family went on vacation during spring break because I think Daddy can’t get off of work during the summer. We went to Amarillo to Palo Duro Canyon. It was fantastic. It was cool. It was really pretty and big. We saw the lighthouse rock formation. We swam in an indoor pool. It felt like it

Do your own ʻact of greenʼ this year

April 22 is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! In July 2009, the Earth Day Network set a goal of having people register “a billion acts of green” on their Web site by the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The network wanted to enlighten millions of people by showing them how others were making small changes in their homes, workplaces and lifestyles. No matter how small each step was, added together, they would do wonders to reduce our carbon footprint. The count is still running, and

whether or not it reaches a billion, there are things each of us can do to help save the planet. When we do our part, we breathe cleaner air, drink cleaner water, and walk on healthier soil.

What can you do? • Dispose of waste properly. Practice reusing, recycling and buying products made from recycled materials. • Buy the least-toxic product for cleaning or lawn care. Do “grasscycling,” letting clippings fall on the lawn. • Avoid products that have excessive packaging. Buy in larger quantities and save the trees and landfills. • Look for water leaks in your home. Check the meter when no water is being used. After two hours, check it again. If the number has changed, there’s a leak somewhere. • Plant a tree. It will provide cooling shade and help to keep the air clean. • Save energy. Turn off extra lights. Get a car with good mileage. Buy products made from recyclables, which uses less energy than creating the same products from new materials. —SPJST—

Camping enthusiasts find fun in great outdoors

Some call it camping, others call it a tent revival. Either way, families are finding new ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Dad might love to stay in the wilds and go fishing. Kids might like it, too, because they can ride in the boat, hike in the woods, and stay in a fancy tent (family tent sales grew by 17 percent last year and backpacking grew by 18.5 percent). Different ways of camping bring comforts that could shock yesteryear’s outdoor buffs, but they could be more fun for all. Some campgrounds have food delivery, concierge services, skate parks, swimming pools, putt putt golf and Wi-Fi service. Campgrounds can be like a small town where everyone is friendly and there’s lots of camaraderie. Some people book the same spot each year so they can be with other annual campers and enjoy their company again. It’s fun to rent an RV for a stay at a favorite campground. People from all walks of life are doing it, not just Grandma and Grandpa. You’ll find every kind of camping vehicle in a facility from tiny campers to huge trailers. In either case, people still spend most of their time outdoors, seated on lawn chairs, going for walks or taking part in campground activities. And they can still afford to go to town for a fine dinner. —SPJST—

“O Ferdovi a Mravenci” by the pop band Divokej Bill. Co si to usmrkanec myslí ne, na mě dojem neudělá

What does this little upstart think? No, he won’t make an impression on me.

The words are sung by Beruška (Lady Bug), a character in a famous Czech children’s series to Ferda Mravenec – Ferda the ant. Beruška, in her view, is far too good for him, and she rejects the little guy. He’s not good enough. A little upstart might be someone who’s not man enough or who is still wet behind the ears or a greenhorn. The Czechs say zelenáč which has multiple translations — greening, tenderfoot, newbie, neophyte, or jackaroo. Ještě mu teče mlíko po bradě – his chin is still dripping with milk – that’s how inexperienced he is.

ally grow into a hero – hrdina — at least in children’s tales. By comparison, in real life, an usmrkanec might be a boy who thinks he can make it onto the best local football team, or join the local wrestling club. Once they grow up a bit and eventually prove that they deserve a spot, that they have potential, that they are worthy of attention, there’s a nicer expression — benjamínek — which means rookie, if you’re talking about the newest member of a sports team. Benjamínek is someone young with something to prove, but already wiser to the ways of the world — one who knows how to be patient and wait for his time to come. There is a world of difference there between him and a silly boy who daydreams of fame, but who doesn’t know how to even properly blow his nose and still needs his mummy to fix him lunch — a sniveler, a little upstart, an usmrkanec. — Jan Velinger

But sometimes even little snivelers can surprise with unexpected courage — often they can’t be put off, but usually their ventures are ill-fated because they simply are not yet ready. An usmrkanec might be a gangly or wimpy teenager trying to slip unnoticed into a pub and brashly think he’ll be served; a kid who foolishly asks an older girl at the prom for the last dance; or a runt of a boy in a fairytale who thinks he deserves a knighthood while he’s still playing with sticks. One day, maybe, long from now, but certainly not yet. But sometimes an usmrkanec can – through trial and tribulation – eventu-

Czech Maypole Traditions

29

The maypole (májka or máj) is also still popular in the Czech Republic, in country villages. Villages compete to get taller maypoles than their neighbors, and during the night the youths of a village guard the maypole to keep ruffians from neighboring villages from knocking it over (while at the same time attempting forays into neighboring villages to knock over the maypoles of others). —From Wikipedia —SPJST—

THE FORT HOOD LIVING MEMORIAL GARDEN

Like all casualties of war, the men and women whose lives were lost in Fort Hood, Texas, as a result of the November 5, 2009, shooting will not be forgotten. In the aftermath of that tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. This site would serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. Working as partners with the City of Killeen, SPJST is spearheading the drive to build the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden. Plans include a memorial pavilion nestled among trees and outlined by walkways in a serene and picturesque setting. The City of Killeen is facilitating the meeting and review processes that will determine the location of the project. The Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden will be made possible through the generous support and donations of businesses, public and private entities, schools, churches, youth groups and everyday men, women, boys and girls. The site will be a living memorial to those who died and a testimony to the beauty that can be achieved when we work together.

Individuals and groups interested in providing fundraising support are encouraged to contact Hiram Dixon at 254.773.1575. Tax-deductible donations may be made payable to: Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden SPJST Home Office • PO Box 100 • Temple, Texas 76503-0100
