We Need Your Support!
This Saturday, May 1 is Join Hands Day. Join Hands Day is the
fraternal national day of service when youths and adults work together to plan and implement projects that benefit their local communities. If you are participating in a Join Hands Day project this Saturday with your lodge, youth club, or community organization—thank you. Thank you for joining hands to touch lives in your community. All members and friends are also invited to join hands with SPJST for the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden project. The garden will be made possible through the generous support and donations of everyday men, women, boys and girls, youth groups, churches, schools, public and private entities, and businesses. The garden will be a living memorial to those who died in Fort Hood, Texas, as a result of the November 5, 2010, shooting and a testimony to the beauty that can be achieved when we work together. This week’s Vestnik features a yellow rose. You can help with the Fort Hood Living Memorial Garden project by signing the rose with your name and/or message and mailing it to the SPJST Home Office with a $1 or more contribution. Roses will be displayed in the SPJST Home Office. The power of one is amazing and can make a difference. When combined with the power of many, big things can be achieved. And, it’s the power of SPJST — members, lodges, and friends — that can and will achieve this beautiful, lasting memorial tribute that will touch lives for many generations. Your kind support will be greatly appreciated to make this happen. Thank you.
Lodge 84, Dallas Celebrates 100 Years Congratulations to Lodge 84, Dallas on its 100th anniversary! The lodge hosted a celebration on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18 to mark the special occasion. It was a grand success, and I know many hours of planning and preparing went into the event. Great job!
Last Call for Your Card The deadline to submit your business card/information for the 2010 Member Services Directory is Monday, May 3. Please mail or email your business card/information today to be included in the directory. Complete details appear on the back of this week’s Vestnik.
Thank You, Director Bobby! Spring has arrived, and for the past several weeks, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche has graciously delivered fresh turnips, greens, and lettuce to the staff at the Home Office. It has all been so delicious. Thanks, Director Wuensche, wife Ruth Ann, and family, for sharing your garden with us.
Be Kind to Animals Week Be Kind to Animals Week is May 2-8, 2010. In May of each year, since 1915, Be Kind to Animals Week honors the role animals play in our lives. The week reminds us to promote ways to treat animals humanely and encourage others, especially children, to do the same.

Lodge 204 Stephenville plans picnic in the park
The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville held their first meeting online on Sunday, April 18, 2010. It was a success. We had more members than we had at some of the meetings at The Koffee Kup Restaurant. My grandfather once told me that you could not teach an old dog new tricks, but it seems that the members are teaching me new tricks. I guess we never get too old to learn something new, and it seems computers are the way to go if the members live so far apart that it is hard to travel to meetings.

News Betty Landsfeld enjoyed the visit from her grandson, his wife, and their two children who were from Milwaukee. Betty said that she wished that they could have stayed longer. Paula Arsenault stated that she will not be with us at the May meeting as she will be in Houston attending the wedding of her daughter. I am sure that it will be a lovely affair, and that Paula will have a great time. Lil Kosarek, Rosie Steinman, and I enjoyed the trip to Temple with the Ennis Sewing Circle to tour the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. It is a beautiful center, and everyone enjoyed all the displays and artifacts. I especially enjoyed seeing my Temple friends, Evelyn Jez who stopped by to say hello, and Merlene Bravenec who had lunch with us. This past week, Lil and I took another day trip to Athens, Texas with a group from Lil’s church in Arlington. Here, we toured the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center which was most interesting. We also visited the Museum in downtown Athens and toured the East Texas Arboretum which was very nice. In the event that any of you in Fort Worth did not go see “Butterflies in the Garden,” at Fort Worth Botanical Garden, you missed a good event. Every two years, the Botanical Society brings in butterflies from all over the world. I was told that they brought in 12,000 butterflies at various stages and each week would replenish the garden as the butterflies hatched. You could just walk around in the garden with all colored butterflies flying around. It was fun and interesting. The next meeting will be May 5, and President Mary Ann said the color for the day will be pink. So wear pink, bring a side dish for lunch, and I look forward to seeing all of you then. So until, Keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Watching Waxwings
By David Knape Lodge 187, Round Rock
My wife and I were watching television when we first noticed something peculiar. Every so often we would see something flash by the window. The flash was so quick we could not tell what it was. Was it bats? Shadows? Our imagination? Finally, after careful observation, we realized that the flashes were groups of birds. They were flying back and forth, back and forth, right across our backyard. We could not understand what was causing them to perform this strange maneuver. Finally I walked outside and saw that across the alley was a tree, loaded with the birds. They were Cedar Waxwings, hanging like fruit, weighing down the limbs. There must have been 200 of them. They were flying across our backyard and landing in this tree. As one group would arrive and another group would leave. When one group touched down, another would take off, looking like a squadron of fighters. They seemed to have a system going, like air-traffic control at the airport. I watched a group as it headed around the corner of the house. It was then that I saw what was happening. They were eating the berries of the Yaupon tree that was next to our kitchen window. They were plucking the red berries as quickly as they could. The entire Yaupon was alive with Waxwings, working steadily, like pickers in a fruit orchard. Each bird would pull a berry free, prying it loose with its bill. Then by

some unknown signal, they would all fly off together and head across the alley to the staging tree. Waxwings are absolutely beautiful birds, quite remarkable in their coloration with colors of brown, gray, and lemon yellow. On the wing is a patch of red, looking like a bright drop of wax, hence its name. They also have a rakish black mask that makes them look like a bold bandits or like Zorro. Their black mask is outlined in white, making it even more prominent. Waxwings are known for dazzling aeronautics and flying in large flocks. They also eat seeds and berries in massive quantities, stripping an entire tree or field in one feeding. They often pass berries or seeds back and forth to each other, apparently trying a flavor or sharing a dessert. What a sight it was to see all those beautiful birds and their flights of fancy. Because they were so close to the kitchen window, we could almost reach out and touch them. They did not seem to mind our watching, and went right on with their feeding and their flight plan. We returned to our television watching, thinking we would view the birds again later, but before we realized it, all the Cedar Waxwings were gone. The Yaupon was completely bare of berries, and the birds had all departed, as mysteriously as they had appeared. We wondered where their next destination would be. One thing for sure, soon there will be a forest of young Yaupon trees popping up, wherever the Waxwings decide to go next. David Knape Lodge 187, Round Rock —SPJST—

Show Mom You Care This Motherʼs Day
(StatePoint) She brought you into the world and guided you through it. Now it’s time to celebrate mom. Look past those flowers this Mother’s Day and opt for lasting, custom gifts or experiences expressing the depth of your
relationship. Don’t forget, it’s not just your mom you should recognize, but the mother of your children, your grandmother, and all the special moms in your life. Here are some creative ideas:
Turn The Tables How many meals has mom prepared for others? It’s time you turned the tables. It doesn’t have to be costly: salads, pastas, and soup will do nicely.
Just add some ambience to the dining room or pack it up for a picnic.
Give a Specially-Customized Gift She loves her customized ring tones and personalized options built into her car, her computer, and even her gym equipment, so she’ll appreciate a gift custom made especially for her. Select a customizable gift based on her personality, such as jewelry that allows you to add different charms and incorporate engravings, or personalized stationery with a design scheme that captures mom’s essence. “By choosing a custom gift, you can rest assured mom will appreciate the time and thought that went into selecting each component,” says Amy Myers, Vice President of Creative Services at Things Remembered, the nation’s leading chain of personalized gift stores. At Things Remembered, customization always has been at the heart of what they do. For Mother’s Day, their Custom Couture jewelry is expected to be a top seller. Shoppers can create a unique custom necklace or bracelet with a pendent, birthstone, figural icon or pearl initial — or combination of all — that includes a personal engraving, such as a name, date or special message. For more information, visit www.ThingsRemembered.com.

Time To Relax Every mom deserves time off. Package a spa gift certificate with a personalized, embroidered robe or an engraved makeup compact to extend her relaxation time. Instead of a pricey spa, use alternatives for at-home pampering. Create a gift basket with bath salts or oils, paired with scented candles and a relaxing CD. If mom likes to read, buy her favorite books and include an engraved bookmark with a quote about the joy of motherhood. She’ll think of you every time she flips a page.
Musical or Photo-Ready Options Mom sang to you as a child. Relive those memories with a music box or water globe featuring a special song. Things Remembered has launched a new collection of engravable music boxes featuring lyrics, instruments and vocals. Choose from an assortment of songs, select your favorite jewelry box design and personalize it with an engraved message. Mothers also love family pictures, so arrange some of her favorite photos in a display. Many retailers offer photo frames, shadowboxes, and albums with areas to add engraved personal reflections. (StatePoint) Get out there and have some fun! It’s the season for hiking, camping or simply enjoying a day with the family at the park. But before running out the door, make sure you’re properly prepared and armed with basic safety information. “With blue skies above our heads and nature below our feet, spending time in the great outdoors can be both an exciting and humbling experience,” says Jeff Corwin, explorer, biologist, conservationist and host on Animal Planet. “But before lacing up the hiking boots and packing up the rucksack, there are some crucial things that every novice adventurer should know.” Here are some tips from Corwin to help you and your family safely enjoy the outdoors:
Always Be Prepared Whether you’re going camping in the woods or hiking on a trail, don’t forget to pack necessities, such as water and a flashlight, as well as a first-aid kit and any medication you may need. For people with allergies, this probably includes an allergy medication. However, just as you would at home, keep all medicines and first-aid supplies out of the reach of children.
Maintain Your Distance While the national parks are available for everyone to enjoy, they also serve to protect wildlife and their habitats. Therefore, when observing animals in the wild, use your common sense, follow the rules of the park and keep a safe distance from all wildlife. Protect yourself and the animals to promote good stewardship of the environment.
Don’t Miss a Moment Whether you’re venturing out to a national park or staying closer to home, it’s always good to do your research before heading outdoors. Our natural spaces have a lot to offer, so select a site that has the features and activities that you and your family can enjoy together. —SPJST—
Preserve Our Parks
With nearly 400 National Parks spread across the United States, your next outdoor adventure could be as close as your backyard. While enjoying the beauty and exciting activities that the parks have to offer, don’t forget to clean up after yourself and respect the environment. “It is very important that we care for our parks to ensure that present and future generations can continue to enjoy them,” says Corwin, who currently is working with McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Division of McNEIL-PPC Inc., the makers of BENADRYL, to educate families about outdoor safety and environmental responsibility. As part of a continuing partnership to preserve America’s National Parks and to help ensure that nobody has to miss great outdoor moments because of allergies, BENADRYL and the National Park Foundation are giving two families the chance to experience nature’s treasures. Visit racetothemoment.msn.com to watch their journey and to discover your own outdoor adventure while learning what to do to help protect America’s parks. Before heading out for a family ad-
venture, be sure to prepare properly. And once you’re out and about, always follow basic safety rules and clean up after your fun is complete. —SPJST—

Congratulations, SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, on Your 100th Anniversary! Editor’s Note: The following appeared in SPJST Lodge 84’s 100th Anniversary Souvenir Booklet. Next week’s Vestnik will include a summary and photos of the anniversary celebration.
The history of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas goes back to our forefathers in La Grange, Texas, in the early 1800s. In Europe and the rest of the world, pressures were being placed on the people. Political, economic, and religious stress was becoming all to frequent and familiar. The Czechs began to dream about coming to the United States of America in search of a new way of life. Hopes were high that with the skills they were bringing, survival in this new world with ideas of freedom and equality would be possible. Thousands of Europeans arrived for a new life. Many settled in Texas and brought the rich heritage and culture with them and, of course, their language. Today, we Czechs display our heritage throughout the state of Texas—attending fairs and festivals

where we parade our costumes, dance the traditional folk dance (beseda), and sing songs in our Czech language. In most cases, those who came to America kept that common bond of language and customs by gathering into communities and remaining close to their neighbors from their homeland. Even in larger cities such as Dallas these people continued to stay close together. In 1897, the Texas lodges met in La Grange, Texas, and the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texasu) became a reality. Twenty-two lodges were present and three additional were given their charters as of July 1, 1897, making a total of 25. The State of Texas granted a legal charter to SPJST on August 12, 1897, less than 90 days from the founding date in July. Now that we have covered some of our Czech history, this is the new beginning of Lodge Pokrok No. 84, Dallas. On February 20, 1910, a loyal group of members held their first
meeting in the old Macabee Hall on Main Street where the present City Hall stands today. The first slate of officers were Vavrin Drobil, President; Vaclav Zastoupil, Vice President; Frank Vodicka, Secretary; Robert Duron, Treasurer; Vaclav Blatny, Bookkeeper; and Vaclav Kartous, Sergeant-at-Arms. Numerous descendents of these fine leaders remain members of SPJST and Lodge 84. Subsequent meetings were being held in the old Grigley Hall located on the corner of Preston and Wood Streets, until the membership grew too large. On August 21, 1921, there was a formal dedication of building for the new home of Lodge 84, located on Floyd Street. In February 1935, the lodge celebrated its 25th anniversary. At this time, the membership had grown from the original 15 charter members to 129 adults and 25 juvenile members. On February 18, 1940, the lodge celebrated its 30th anniversary. Times were great, and the need for a larger facility was in place. In De-
cember 1940, the lodge acquired additional property in the form of two lots, and plans for a new building began on January 1, 1941. World War II brought a lot of change. Our men went to serve our country in the Armed Forces, and it also brought a population boom to Dallas. We have always been fortunate to have members who care about the lodge hall. As we all know, keeping up buildings and continuous maintenance is a never-ending job. We appreciate those who volunteered their time and efforts to keep this organization alive. In February 1950, the lodge celebrated its 40th anniversary. Another milestone for the lodge was on January 17, 1954 when Brothers Ben David and Ben Jarma brought before the membership a proposal to begin a softball team. On February 21, 1954, this became a reality. By 1985, the team had been in existence for 32 consecutive years, a record unheard of in the City of Dallas. This was unusual because Dallas was so big that players

changed teams so often. The team won many trophies and tournaments over the years throughout the city and state showing good sportsmanship and the love of the game while continuing to share the fraternal bonds of teammates and families. You can still see their many achievements in the trophy cases in the foyer at Lodge 84, Dallas today. The lodge had a youth club, but the date of when it was formed is unknown. Sister Bessie Petr organized the Teen Club on September 16, 1956, and is still serving as youth leader today. The youth program has been actively involved in representing and serving Lodge 84 and District Three in a manner of true fraternalism. Young people are the future of tomorrow, and we hope they carry on the traditions that so many people have worked hard to preserve. September 1, 1957, was another landmark day. The new addition was formally opened and completed for the building as it stands today. Over the years, the lodge continues to make improvements and modernize as times change. Through the years, Lodge 84 and the arts have been a large factor in entertainment and fundraising. On March 3, 1957, a dinner and Czech
operetta was held with proceeds going to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor. This year, on March 6, 2010, the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) at the University of North Texas presented the Czech opera—The Bartered Bride in the Czech language demonstrating that history repeats itself. Lodge 84 supports the Dallas Czech Orchestra and the Choir Group (these two groups are still in existence today) and other Czech-related organizations around the area. One way that we have continued to promote our Czech heritage is by participating annually at the State Fair of Texas. Czech Day at the Fair involves all age groups from singing, dancing, enjoying food, and Czech music. We continue to celebrate the same traditions, only now the name has changed, and is referred to as Heritage Day at the Fair.
2010 was the first year that Lodge 84 had two Czech floats in the New Year’s Day Parade in Downtown Dallas. 100 years in the making—values, family traditions, and Czech heritage are the ingredients for continued success.

Attention, Join Hands Day Participants: Contact the Media
Getting publicity requires some time and effort. These suggestions may help.
1. Develop a media contact list, with phone numbers and email addresses, of newspaper reporters and editors, local and regional magazines, local television and radio stations and wire services. Most media outlets have Web sites where you can search and obtain contact names. Use real names, not just titles. 2. Distribute a pre-event press release that explains the who, what, when, where, why and how of your activity
3. If any of your volunteers have media connections, ask them to make personal contacts. 4. Invite a journalist to participate in your project.
5. Invite a newspaper or other media outlet to co-sponsor your event. Ask a local
21
media personality to do a show from the work project site.
6. Make follow-up phone calls during the week prior to your event. Reinforce your announcement, answer questions, invite the media and provide best photo opportunities. 7. Develop radio public service announcements.
8. Get a local celebrity involved. Try to find someone with an affinity for your cause.
9. VERY IMPORTANT: Submit your project to the JOIN HANDS DAY Web site at www.joinhandsday.org. By registering your event, it can be seen by volunteers looking to participate and by members of the media looking for good stories. If you don’t have Internet access, call the JOIN HANDS DAY Action Center at (630) 522-6322, ext. 116, and have a Pre-Event Form faxed or mailed to you. 10. Involve your mayor, elected public official or other local celebrity to appear at your event to rally volunteers and attract media coverage.
Have your lodge* participate in Join Hands Day on May 1, 2010
Last day to apply - May 1!
*and get $100 to apply towards your project!
Mark May 1, 2010, on your calendar and make plans for your lodge to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by Americaʼs Fraternal Benefit Societies in cooperation with the National Fraternal Congress of America. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The SPJST strongly supports this initiative and encourages our lodges and youth clubs get involved on this special day!
The first step is for your lodge to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Who better to work with that your lodgeʼs youth club! In the event that your lodge doesnʼt have a youth club, itʼs an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You will also want to involve another community service, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas.
SPJST lodges that conduct Join Hands Day projects in 2010 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the Home Office. The incentive will be sent to the lodge following the registration of the event on the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org. For assistance, please contact the SPJST Fraternal Department at 800.727.7578. Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 10 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000. Lodges are strongly encouraged to join forces with other area lodges and/or community service organizations, civic, school and/or church groups.
Please complete the following Join Hands Day event summary.

11. Emphasize human-interest stories.
12. Use non-media outlets, such as flyers for bulletins, school newsletters, supermarket grocery bags, etc.
Don’t forget to send your photos to the Vestnik!
Photo Usage: The reason for getting good photos is for the Vestnik, www.spjst.org, and for submission to JOIN HANDS DAY for use on its Web site and potential inclusion in its printed materials. If a project is selected as an Excellence Award winner, JOIN HANDS DAY will need quality photos for publication and Web posting. Some local newspapers will use submitted photos. Photos also make excellent thank-you mementos for volunteers. Photo Requirements: Medium-resolution (200 dpi) digital photos are used in the Vestnik. Low-resolution (72 dpi) digital photos can be used on the Web site. Quality standard 4x6 or 5x7 glossy prints also are acceptable. If you have standard prints, send the original photos, please do not scan them to be emailed digitally. Find the best photographer possible. If a volunteer is taking photographs, make sure that he/she has no other responsibilities during the event and can focus on getting interesting pictures. If you or a volunteers are taking pictures, use these tips to get dynamic photos that grab the viewers’ attention:
Page 22
1. Take intergenerational photos – young people and adults working together.
2. Focus on people wearing JOIN HANDS DAY or SPJST tee-shirts or buttons. Also look for bright colors to work into photos, such as flowers.
3. Take “action” shots of people working on the project. Take close-ups to show exactly what participants are doing. Ask them to glance up and make eye contact. Avoid taking photos of people’s backs.
4. For group shots, get as close as possible and fill the frame.
5. Arrange some pictures, but in a way that doesn’t appear staged. For example, arrange flowers for planting close together to make a colorful foreground, or have an adult hold boards while a young person pounds a nail. 6. Take both vertical and horizontal photos. It’s easy to forget to turn the camera.
7. Submit photos immediately after the event to the Vestnik Editor: email

CHMGC plans “Legends” summer camp
Magic will be created June 14 to 18, 2010, when the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple opens its doors for a summer camp for students who have just completed the third through sixth grades. The theme for this first-year event will be “Legends” and will focus on the
Page 29
historic Czech legends from the Old Country. During the week, children will make their own puppets, a theater, and develop a play to share with their parents on Friday evening. Puppets have been a part of Czech cultural heritage for many generations. Puppets were made and used by families to entertain each other and the Charles Bridge in Prague has been, and still is, the scene of festivals that always include dramas and comedies featuring marionettes. Often, the plays were satires about politics or religion. Each camp day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast and sharing of legends. Boys and girls will then learn how to engineer, construct, costume, and operate marionettes. A snack will also be provided, and camp will end at noon. “Legends” camp cost is $75 and includes all materials, tee-shirts, breakfasts, and snacks. Space is limited to 20 students, and volunteers are needed. For more information, please call Sandi at (254) 899-2935. —SPJST—
Where the Carpenter Left a Hole ~ SoundCzech ~
Hello, this is SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s very own programme in which you can learn some interesting, if not useful phrases while listening to music. Today’s phrase to listen to is kde nechal tesař díru, or where the carpenter left a hole. This old and rather odd saying appeared in a song by the Moravian band Mňága a Žďorp, released on its recent album, “Takže dobrý.” In the song, called Fantasy for a mute lyre, the phrase goes pro mě jistej tesař nechal díru, meaning a certain carpenter left a hole for me. This is a variation of a very old Czech say-

ing, kde nechal tesař díru, or where a carpenter left a hole. As you might have guessed, the phrase is used to suggest you are looking for a way out, for a way to escape.
The saying probably comes from the times when houses were still built of wood. When you’re trapped inside, you say you were looking for a hole to get out, figuratively speaking. Nowadays, the phrase sounds a little too archaic, but you can still come across it sometimes, just like in a song.
Czechs have naturally many other ways of expressing the need to get away. You can use the verb zdrhnout — to run away. A little more colloquial is the verb zdejchnout se — which is used to suggest someone makes for an inconspicuous exit. Another more modern verb would be odprejsknout – literally to peel off. That can also be used a rather rude command – vodprejskni – get lost.
29
When you find yourself in a situation that does not allow for an overt escape, you might want to zmizet po anglicku – to disappear the English way. You can also say vypařit se — which means to evaporate. Yet another phrase, that was popular with our great-grandparents, is vzít nohy na ramena – literally, to put your feet on your shoulders. — Jan Richter

2010 SPJST Member Services Directory It’s all about members helping members! Submit your business card today!
If you are an SPJST member and you have a business — large or small, get it listed in the 2010 SPJST Member Services Directory. The directory, which will be published in late spring/early summer, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales agents and free listings to members who can provide goods and services to other SPJST members. The idea is based on the fraternal concept of members helping members. In addition to these free listings, members will have the opportunity to place a free display advertisement/coupon in the directory. Free display advertisements/coupons will be provided to businesses that offer SPJST members discount products and/or services. For example, if you’re in the automotive repair business and your typical charge for an oil change is $29.95 and you offer SPJST members a 10 percent discount, that makes you eligible for a free display advertisement/coupon. To be listed in the 2010 directory, you must be an SPJST member. Send your business card, SPJST lodge number, and SPJST member discount information (optional) to: SPJST Member Services Directory c/o Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100 You may also email your information to the Editor melaniez@vvm.com All materials must be submitted no later than Monday, May 3, 2010.
