Painting Presentations at Lodge 15, Buckholts
SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts member Lamerle Zajicek, center, left, and husband A.W. present an oil painting of the old F.J. Zabcik Store and other shops in 1927 in what is now Zabcikville to Czech Heritage Museum Archivist Frank Klinkovsky. The painting was presented at the May 10 Lodge 15 meeting. Pictured are, seated, left to right, Frank Tomascik, Kathleen Jurca, Virginia Williams, Charlsie Svetlik, Lillie Zajicek, Martha Glaser, Kristie Kopriva, and Joe Kopriva. Back: LaVerne Vanicek, Dorothy Tomascik, Adolph Jurca, Doug Williams, Arthur Peevey, Regina Peevey, Lamerle Zajicek, A.W. Zajicek, Frank Klinkovsky, Tracy Allen
(holding Corson Allen), Michael Allison, Charles Obermiller, Mary Helen Rodriguez, and Scott Brandon. An old photograph published in the Temple Daily Telegram was the inspiration for the painting. Alvielene Hertel taught Lamerle the technique of painting the old photos. The oil painting along with two framed diplomas won by Lamerle’s father-in-law Albert Zajicek, also of Lodge 15, at the Sokol athletic competition held in Dallas on June 13, 1925, and in Chicago on July 26, 1925, will be loaned to the Museum. RIGHT PHOTO: Regina Peevey presents a painting of the Lodge 15 hall that was destroyed by fire in 1936 to President Doug Williams.

Editor’s Note
A family owned a parrot that had picked up some naughty words
and squawked them at the top of its voice. Nothing seemed to shut it up. One day, the minister was due to visit the home. The mother, in a panic, stuck the parrot in the freezer (after making sure to adjust the temperature so it wouldn’t freeze). After the minister left, she went to let it out. When she opened the door, the parrot hopped out. “Learned my lesson,” it squawked. “No more cursing.” “Thank goodness,” said the mother. The parrot cocked its head. “One question?” Puzzled, the woman said, “Go ahead.” The parrot leaned its head forward, gestured toward the freezer, and whispered, “What did the chicken do?” This Weekʼs Vestnik . . . . . . is 40 pages! A Cold Lesson
Lodge 15 Memories David and I had the pleasure to attend Lodge 15, Buckholts’ monthly meeting on Monday, May 10. We met some of the nicest people in a most welcoming atmosphere. President Doug Williams conducted an entertaining meeting while Mrs. Virginia worked in the kitchen to get the delicious covered dish meal together for us after the meeting. And, I was so impressed by the history that so many members have of Lodge 15. Generations keep coming back and that is what makes Lodge 15 so special. The lodge is about to embark on a restoration project for the hall. I enjoyed visiting with several members and hearing their stories of building the hall, meeting at the hall, and working in the hall. Keep up the great work, Lodge 15. And, Ms. Martha, the jelly is fantastic — and almost gone! Thanks, Lodge 15 for your hospitality. A True Friend . . . A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirit; recognizes your disabilities but emphasizes your possibilities. The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. —From William Arthur Ward, philosopher

Lodge 15 Buckholts welcomes visitors
President Douglas Williams called the May meeting to order at 5 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by one our longest, faithful members, Charlsie Svetlik. A moment of silence was observed in memory of our departed members. All officers were present except Treasurer Sandie Fischer. We had such a nice group in attendance. We had 24 in all — 16 members and eight guests. That is the most we have had in years. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked them for coming. Among the guests we had were Lamerle Zajicek and husband A.W., Honorary District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek and Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and husband David Nauert. We really felt honored to have all these dignitaries with us at the meeting. Since the treasurer was absent, President Williams gave us a short run-down of finances for the month. In old business, we are still getting bids on the construction contracts for the building restriction and are waiting on plans from Sandy Stone of Heimcath Architects in Austin on the designs for the front entrance where we plan on using the paving stones. Hopefully, it won’t be long until we can get something going. Also, in old business, we did take part in Join Hands Day with the Ag Department at school. Vice President Scott Brandon gave us a report on upcoming SPJST
events. The main event coming up in Buckholts is Cottonfest and school reunion. The school reunion is held here at Lodge 15, Buckholts hall. A meal will be catered, and we will have some tasty desserts for sale. That will be on June 5. Then, on June 6, Lodge 47, Seaton, Star Hall will have its annual picnic where there will be lots of good food, music, and entertainment. All of

The May 11, 2010, meeting of Lodge 141, Sealy was held by telephone contact to those members who normally attend. Our Join Hands Day project was a success and has been registered online. We had approximately 30 adults and youths participating. Next Meeting—June 8 The next meeting is scheduled for June 8. Lodge 182 Falls County appreciates award
Dear Věstník, Our lodge attended the District Two Spring Meeting in March. We received our incentive award. We really appreciate the Supreme Lodge for making these awards possible. It really helps our small lodge to have activities without as many aggressive fundraising projects. Hats off to the Supreme Lodge. We also met in April at the Senior Citizen Center for a meeting and the youth hosted a membership drive. Patsy was there to help, and we had a great turnout. Members and guests enjoyed games, door prizes, and ate hot dogs, chips, and cookies. Respectfully submitted, DeAnn Beckendorf Reporter —SPJST—

2010 JOIN HANDS DAY
SPJST Lodge 258, Seguin joins hands for Christian Food Cupboard
On our regular meeting date of April 25, 2010, the adults and youth of Lodge 258, Seguin gathered and collected food for the Christian Food Cupboard. The drive netted 140 pounds of food gathered which was delivered to the Christian Food Cupboard on Friday, April 30. The delivery was done the day prior to Join Hands Day because the food pantry is
not open on weekends. The adults and youth were excited about being able to work together to assist residents in the community who are not as fortunate as we are and the food pantry was very appreciative of the items collected. Although our group was small, participation involved one family of three generations. —SPJST—

SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station, BVCHS join hands to clean Czech Moravian Cemetery Submitted by Henry Mayo, President
Members of SPJST Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station and Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society worked together to clean the Czech Moravian Cemetery on May 1, 2010, for Join Hands Day. We mowed, trimmed, hand-pulled weeds from iris patches, and even cleaned a few headstones in this historic cemetery in Bryan. We mowed and trimmed the entire one-acre cemetery, but only one corner of the land— in a grove of oaks and cedars—has graves. The cemetery
has no regular caretakers, and Lodge 189 members will voluntarily mow it at least a few more times this year. Lodge 189 members who participated are Calvin Seevers, Daniel Chasak, Albert Scasta, and Henry Mayo. Regina and Charles Opersteny from the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society also helped. The weather was nice, and all involved enjoyed working together on the cleanup project.

In Memoriam
In Memory of Helen Parma
Helen Anna Parma was born January 18, 1917, in a tiny “shotgun house” on South Lamar Street in Dallas, Texas. She died on March 20, 2010, at the age of 93. Her parents were George and Anna Skotak, both Czechoslovakian immigrants from Helen Parma Moravia. They entered America through the port of Galveston. Helen survived her four brothers, George Jr., Benny, Otto, and Chester and sisters Agnes and Bessie. On March 7, 1936, Helen married Oldrich Parma – known as Olly to all his friends. They were inseparable until his death on March 25, 1985. Helen and Olly were a team in business. They specialized in upholstering furniture for fine decorators who served Highland Park, Park Cities, and other discriminating clients. They began humbly in a small house on Hondo Avenue in Dallas. Their fine craftsmanship was rapidly recognized, and early on, they became the sole upholstery source for Neiman Marcus. That little house on Hondo not only contained their upholstery business, but their three children Tommy, Jerry, and Kathy. Quarters were so tight that they had to store fabrics on their bed during the day and remove them at night to sleep. As their business and family grew, they moved their shop and family to a larger home on Maple Avenue in Dallas. Eventually they built a new up-
holstery shop attached to the house. Tommy, Jerry and Kathy worked in the shop and learned facets of the trade and the “Parma brand of perfection.” The Parma Upholstery Shop became recognized by top decorators in Dallas. Their exacting work for Neiman Marcus and the famous “Fortnights” was cited by Stanley Marcus. Helen and Olly upholstered furniture in the “Green Room” of the White House during the Eisenhower presidency. Parma Upholstery was also in demand by the Dallas Museum of Art, corporations, and movie stars. Helen and Olly stayed close to their Czechoslovakian roots. For many years, Helen help Olly with his work as Education Director of Sokol for the Southern District. Helen received her 50-year pin from Sokol and was then made an honorary member. The 1994 Sokol Slet was dedicated to Helen along with a few other members. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas. For 48 years Helen was a member of the Krouzek Ceskych Zen (Dallas Circle of Czech Women). Helen is survived by her children Tommy, Jerry and Kathy Nemec; grandchildren David, Jenny, Mark, Julie, Carl, Daniel, and Peter; and great-grandchildren Lauren, Natalie, Emilie, Benji, Jonathan, Olivia, Christopher, Morgan, Christa, Kelley, Gracie, Robert, Rosie, Jacob, Noah, Rachel, Samuel, Oliver, and Isaac. Funeral service was held March 25, at Sparkman-Hillcrest Chapel in Dallas. Deacon Tim Muldoon officiated. Entombment was at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas. TCGS honors Czech veterans
On March 27, 2010 the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) held its most successful event to date, “Let Freedom Ring – A Tribute to Czech Veterans,” at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas. TCGS wanted to recognize and honor those Czech men and

women who served, sacrificed, and gave so much for our country’s freedom. It was obvious that this goal was reached, as evidenced by the overflow crowd of more than 300 attendees and the emotional comments of those in attendance. It was clear that this tribute had a special meaning for the veterans and their families. At the center of attention on this day of tribute to veterans, was the Military Wall of Honor. For months,
TCGS invited persons with Czech veterans in their families to submit photos, discharge papers, and other military memorabilia to be included on the Wall of Honor. The response was phenomenal, resulting in a display that was 40 feet long and eight feet high. It was truly awesome, and some mentioned that it reminded them of the Viet Nam Memorial. People asked what was going to happen to the Wall. TCGS recognizes that there are fami-

lies who have not had the opportunity to be included and for that reason has decided that the Wall will be expanded. TCGS is inviting people to continue to submit their military documents. Currently the plan is to display the Wall in other venues. The festivities of the day began outside the Civic Center where a special exhibit of a 1943 Willys MB, a vehicle used in the European Theatre in World War II, was on display and

available for picture taking. The Willys, named “Jr”, is owned by Ken and Stacey (Veselka) Hightower, who were also in authentic uniforms. They collect World War II items and exhibit them as a way of saying “thank you” to veterans for their service in World War II. As guests approached the building, the red, white, and blue banners adorning the walk way, and members of TCGS waiting to welcome them, gave them their first indication that they were in for a “red carpet day.” As attendees registered for the day’s activities, the “red carpet” treatment continued. Each veteran was identified, and presented with a special veteran’s pin, surrounded by patriotic ribbons. The red, white, and blue decorations along with numerous military exhibits in the main auditorium set the stage for a truly patriotic experience beginning with the presentation of colors by members of the Texas A&M Color Guard, followed by rousing presentations by Emil Faltisek, Jr., who spoke about his World War II experiences and memories; Carol Brincefield, who explained life on the home front during the War; Doug Kubicek, who relayed the remarkable story of Theofil Bujnoch, a Czech cotton farmer in World War I; and the keynote speaker, Major General John E. Simek (retired). Even the entertainment was laced with the spirit of patriotism. The Dallas Czech Orchestra presented a patriotic program honoring the veterans, consisting of marches and a salute to branches of the military by playing a medley of the theme songs for each branch. Veterans stood and were recognized as the song for their individual branch of service was played. It was an awesome presentation. The veterans continued to receive the “red carpet” treatment during a special recognition ceremony that was conducted by TCGS Co-Presidents, Charlene Hurta and Patrick Janis. As each veteran’s name was called, he or she was asked to come forward to receive a special medal honoring him/her as a veteran. Upon receipt of the medal, many of the veterans put it in their pocket and said that they would carry it as a constant reminder of this special day. These medals were donated for this ceremony by Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars. Perhaps the most moving tribute of the day was the recognition of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. To honor these brave souls, a memorial

display consisting of a candle, a cross covered in red roses, and a flag that had draped the casket of one of the fallen was displayed as “Taps” and “Amazing Grace” were played. As the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice were read, family members placed their name under the display. This solemn ceremony made a lasting impression on all in attendance. The various military exhibits drew a lot of attention. For some, the sight of the military uniform display brought back memories. For others, it was a way to learn. Of particular interest was a display of all the insignias, medals, and patches from various branches of service. Each was identified by company and branch of service. Another display that garnered a lot of attention was a special collection
of World War II memorabilia owned and displayed by Carol Brincefield. In conjunction with “Let Freedom Ring,” TCGS was pleased to unveil their newest publication, Czechs in Uniform. The two-volume, hardcover set is a compilation of more than 1,500 submittals about veterans of Czech descent from all over the world. Because of the interest of many who were not included, a third volume is currently being planned. Guidelines will be forthcoming. See advertisement on page 37 of this week’s Vestnik for complete details on how to order. TCGS wishes to thank all the attendees for helping to make this tribute to Czech veterans a success, and TCGS is very proud to have had this opportunity to honor our Czech veterans. —SPJST—

Czech schools test new style of handwriting
Czech children spend a considerable part of their first year at school learning to write, more so than their contemporaries in Britain or France. That’s because in Czech handwriting joined-up letters are very different from printed letters, with an emphasis on perfectly formed, slanted letters with lots of loops and twirls. Now, it looks like learning to write may become easier. A young Czech graphic artist has come up with a new set of letters, based on printed letters rather than the cursive style.
Czech school children basically have to distinguish four different types of letters. Capital and small print and capital and small cursive. When learning to write, teachers often insist that they follow a strict pattern: letters must be slanted to the right, perfectly formed and linked-up without lifting pen from paper. But as they grow up and write faster, children tend to scrawl and their handwriting often becomes illegible. Radana Lencová is a graphic artist and the author of the new script:
“Nobody uses the handwriting they learned at school in its full form, especially capital letters with loops and connecting strokes between individual letters. When children follow the model they were taught in first grade, it works fine. But when it is not observed and they concentrate more on the loops and the strokes rather than on the letter itself, the writing becomes illegible. That’s why isolated letters are easier to read.” The alphabet Lencová has created – so called Comenia Script – is not based on an accurate imitation of a given model. It is important that children notice the basic proportion of the letters, but it is up to them how they write them.
“My alphabet is based on the so called Humanist Cursive, where letters are not joined-up. But they do have connecting strokes so when they are put side by side, it does look a bit like joined-up writing. So the alphabet has a handwritten, elegant style.”
The first official testing of the new Comenia Script has already taken place in several schools. One of them is Škola Hrou in Prague’s district of Břevnov. Its director Ivana Málková says she welcomed the possibility to test the new script: “I have been teaching first graders for several years, and I think the original form of joined-up writing is a useless activity, because children don’t use it when they grow up. I am glad parents have accepted the new style and children learn to form letters that are very much like the letters they know from books. The letters that I have been teaching until now become illegible when they are deformed. With these letters, even if the kids write the letter “a” the other way round, I can still read it.”
The testing has shown that children find the Comenia Script much easier to learn than the classic joined-up writing and as of the beginning of the next school year, another 80 schools will join the programme. It is very likely that in a few years’ time, the Czech term “krasopis” or penmanship will be a thing of the past. — Ruth Fraňková

Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids celebrates reopening
In June 2008, the Czech and Slovak Museum in the state of Iowa was hit by a devastating flood which has caused damage running into millions of dollars. Now, nearly two years later, it has opened in a new location in the Kosek Building, right in the middle of the Czech Village. To mark the first step on the road to its recovery, the Czech and Slovak Museum has put up a new exhibition called “Rising Above: the story of a people and the flood”. I spoke to the museum’s director Gail Naughton.
Gail Naughton: “The Kosek building was built in 1913 and it has had various uses during its life. Its most famous was when it was owned by the Kosek family, and it was a dime store, selling candy and all sorts of things. It is very fondly remembered. It is located in the Czech Village, which is the ethnic commercial district in Cedar Rapids, and the Museum purchased the building and has now put a new museum exhibition in there.”
If I understand it correctly, the Kosek building is just a temporary location of the National Czech and Slovak Museum: “I wouldn’t use the word temporary, actually. It is the first step of our progress in coming back from the flood in June 2008. The exhibition that we are installing there is the story of the Czechs and Slovaks in Cedar Rapids and the development of this neighborhood and the museum and the story about the flood, which is now of course a part of this history here. We hope that the exhibition will continue to be open after we open our new museum and library.”
When do you think that could be?: “We hope that that happens in the year 2012, so from two to two and a half years from now.” Apart from the exhibition dedicated to the floods, what else can be found in the Kosek building?: “In our Kosek building, we have our own administrative offices for the

museum, we have a classroom for children, we have many school tours and children who come through, and a museum store. We have many imported items from the Czech Republic and Slovakia that we sell there. So this is a really good start for us to get back on our feet after the flood and open a wonderful exhibit and get back to telling the story of Czechs and Slovaks that we want to do.” The Czech Village was one of the areas hardest hit by the floods in June 2008. Looking back now, how badly was it stricken and how did it affect life in the village?:
“It was devastating. All of the buildings had eight to ten feet of water in them but many of these small business owners have rebuilt, have renovated their buildings and reopened. Some buildings have changed hands and there is new ownership developing new businesses in the village so it has made remarkable progress in coming back and we hope that it will be even stronger and better than it was before the floods.” — Ruth Fraňková
