On Saturday, May 15, 2010, although the weatherman did not give us much encouragement for outdoor activities, members and nonmembers gathered at Lions Park in Temple ready to pitch horseshoes. Ten teams participated on what started out to be a cloudy morning (with rain showers predicted) and

Making Her Point
Harold Ross founded The New Yorker magazine in 1925 on a lim-
ited budget. To keep it going, he kept a close eye on expenses. According to one story, during those early years Ross hired the famous writer and wit Dorothy Parker to write an article for the magazine. When she failed to turn in her story, Ross called to ask what the problem was. Her response was succinct and typically Parker-esque: “Someone else was using the pencil.” May is Fitness Month May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. See information on page 23.
Memorial Day: A Solemn Occasion Memorial Day began in the 19th century as “Decoration Day.” Citizens were urged to decorate the graves of soldiers who’d died in the Civil War. After World War I, Decoration Day expanded to include ceremonies honoring the dead in all of America’s wars. Decoration Day became Memorial Day officially in 1967. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Act established it as one of three holidays (including Veterans Day and George Washington’s birthday, now called Presidents Day) celebrated on a Monday to create a convenient three-day weekend. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday in May. One tradition of Memorial Day is the wearing of poppies. The custom is generally credited to Moina Michael, a former teacher at the University of Georgia, who was working for the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries at the end of World War I.
She was inspired by reading the poem “In Flanders Fields,” by Canadian poet and doctor John McCrae. The poem’s opening lines read:
“In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row . . .”
During the Overseas War Secretaries’ annual conference held in New York City in 1918, shortly before the signing of the armistice ending the war, grateful delegates gave Michael $10 in recognition of her help with the conference. She spent the money on 25 red silk poppies to hand out to participants (or she may have used the money on materials to make the poppies herself.) The poppy became a national symbol of remembrance, and two years later the American Legion adopted it at its own conference. Poppies have symbolized the day ever since. Tee-Shirt Slogans That Inspire Clothes can say a lot about you— especially your tee-shirts. In a New York Times interview, Jana Eggers, CEO of the personalized clothing manufacturer Spreadshirt, reveals her three favorite tee-shirt sayings:
• “I know something you don’t know.” Says Eggers, “You can’t wear that shirt without starting a conversation.”
• “Be confident, not certain.” A quotation from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
• “Failure is impossible.” You may fail on your way to success, says Eggers. The point is to think differently about failing: Learn from it, and keep moving forward. —SPJST—

Czech instructor seeks information
Dear Readers of Věstník, Dobrý den! Some of you have kindly completed and sent me the questionnaire on the language, culture, and attitudes of Texas Czechs that appeared on the SPJST website a couple of months ago. I very much appreciate your help with this data collection. Thus far, I have only 40 completed questionnaires. So if any other readers are willing to contribute, please access an electronic copy on the SPJST website under the “Heritage” link at www.spjst.org or contact me to re-
quest a paper copy. I will gladly cover the postage for any mailed questionnaires. While I need to collect some biographical information from you for research purposes, all participants will remain anonymous in any published results. I will share the results with you via Věstník, Našinec, and the TCHCC Newsletter. Secondly, as part of my study, I would like to be able to map out the state of teaching Czech (and Texas Czech) in Texas. If you have attended a community Czech language course, a college course, a course organized by a local chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, or any other instruction to help you improve your Czech at some point in your lives or are planning to do so, I’d very much like to learn more about it. Here is the type of information I’m looking for: • The course’s focus and scope/its purpose • Was/Is it taught by a community member/SPJST member/CHS member/college instructor (etc.)? • Where and when held • Duration of the course • Approximately, a number of students in attendance • Age representation in the course” Various age groups? Largely older people? • Do you feel that the course has helped you improve your Czech (that is, the variety of Czech you speak)? Has it fulfilled your expectations? Was/Is any attention given to Texas Czech expressions and structures? Was/Is much attention give to learning European Czech expressions, perhaps to be able to communicate while visiting the Czech Republic, etc.?
Any course-related information that you can provide would be more than welcome. Here is how to contact me: Lida Cope, 707 Addington Drive, Winterville, North Carolina 28590; email copel@ecu.edu; phone (252) 3216945. Thank you and děkuji vám! Lida (Dutkova) Cope

their projects. Lodge 47, Seaton will have its annual picnic coming up soon. I don’t have the exact date right in front of me at the moment, but I am sure there will be plenty of information in the Vestnik on this event. In August, the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer event is happening the 13th to 15th. Youth Leader Joan Vanicek reported on the youth club. They had their May meeting after our Mother’s Day Barbecue. At the barbecue, they sponsored a quilt raffle and had five extra prizes to give to lucky winners. Thanks to all the youth for their help with the barbecue. Their June meeting will be on Monday night, June 14 along with the adult meeting. The youth will provide the meal for the social at 6:30 p.m. They elected officers at their May meeting, and the results will be published in the youth section. Congratulations to these youth members. I am sure they will represent the youth club well. We held a lengthy discussion on the Mother’s Day Barbecue. It was a great success, and we want to thank everyone for coming out to Cyclone and supporting us. We especially want to thank everyone who helped work on the day before and on the day of the barbecue. Thanks to all who donated cakes for the meal and to the homemade goods booth. Your donations were very much appreciated. A big thank you to Wilbert and Margaret Mikeska and Robert and Barbara Macek and their families for all the work and hours that they put in to make this day a big success. A big thank you to everyone who worked and supported this event. It wouldn’t be the success that it is without your help. Birthdays for May are Jennifer Hoelscher - 2nd; Wilbert Mikeska 8th; Theresa Klecka - 8th; and Ann Schneider - 9th. I asked Wilbert how young he was, and he told me 74. He said that I didn’t have to print that. Oh,

recently. Rosie Steinman, Carrie Milan, Rita Thomas, and friend Sharron Connelly, Wesley Landsfeld and friends Maggie and Ernest Grmela of West, Anna Marie and I really did enjoy the presentation. I talked with Annie Whitsell recently, and she said that on her 86th birthday which fell on a Sunday after mass at St. Paul’s Church, Father asked Annie to stand up and as she wondered what was going on, the whole congregation started singing “Happy Birthday” to her. Annie has 20 years service in ministry at the church. Congratulations, Annie, and may you have many more. Melba Brown called to say that her sister Merel Kovar is still at Garden Terrace, doing fine, and would probably be there until her cast comes off her arm. We’ve missed you, Merel. I stopped in Manor Care to visit with Agnes Reznicek the other day. We had a nice visit. She said that everyone is nice, she likes living there, and that the food is good. She also said to tell her friends “hello.” She was telling me about all the activities and what she does, and added, “I have sense enough to stay out of trouble” which I just loved. She originally thought that her friend would arrive in time to come to the Friendship Club, but that didn’t work out so Helen served her garden cucumber salad at home instead of bringing it to the Club. nice Mother’s Day. Her granddaughter Nikki came by and other granddaughter Missy called from Austin. Anna said that when she went out to her mail box to pick up Sunday’s paper, she had a rose on top of the paper from her delivery person. What a nice surprise! Anna said that she called the Star Telegram to thank the person who had done this. Lillie Kosarek had an enjoyable Mother’s Day. She was invited to the home of her son JD and his wife Pam Kosarek in Waco for lunch along with her other three sons and their families. I was invited, too, and we had a most delightful day. Since it was Mother’s Day, JD did all the cooking, and he al-
ways does a great job. Tracy Horn enjoyed the visit from her sister-in-law and niece Lydia Luza and Lydia Mousner from Bryan. Tracy said all her children came, too so they really had a nice day and visit. Lydia Alholm celebrated her 90th birthday on April 30. She, sister Frances Matthews, and I were taken out to lunch to Oscar’s by her son RL. We enjoyed Mexican food and had a nice visit.
Helen Skrasek, Debbie Skrasek, Pauline Morbitzer, and I enjoyed going to the Artisan Theater with Lydia Alholm to see “Oklahoma.” It was a great musical. Helen treated each of us with a little “care” package. We each got a box of six fresh baked delicious assorted kolače. I could hardly wait to get home to eat one as they smelled so good. I didn’t want to dig into the box while driving. Thanks, Helen! Several of our members left the meeting early to attend the funeral of Victoria Kratky Murphy who died on May 2. Victoria was an SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth member and friend to many. She also lived at the Wellington. We were also saddened to learn of the death of Mary Lou Akard, Lydia’s former sister-in-law, who died on May 7 in Hico, Texas. Mary Lou was originally married to Lydia’s brother Anthony Tirk who died in World War II. Also, our sympathy goes out to Anna Marie and Bill Moncrief on the death of Bill’s step-mother Deborah Beggs Moncrief who died on May 13. Our sympathy goes out to all three of these families. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, and may their souls rest in peace. The next meeting will be on June 2. Wear green, bring your food dish to share, and see you then! Lodge 25, Ennis youth getting ready for YAD
Dear Readers, The youth year is almost over. I am so excited. School has been a lot of fun. We had field day last week, and I got third place in the obstacle course. After field day, my mom, little brother, and I went to my sister’s field day. Mom took us home early but before we went home, we went to go see the traveling wall, that was in Ennis for five days. I saw lots of men in their uniforms. It was cool. I have been working on my YAD project a little bit. I can’t wait for YAD and camp. I hope I get picked to be someone’s duchess for YAD royalty. There were a lot of things covered at this meeting. It was long but informative. We were able to get our YAD cards completed and turned in to Sister Lynda Novak ahead of schedule so she can review and make sure they are correct before District Three Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Lodge 183, Arlington. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
Since 1983, May has been observed as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Individuals and organizations everywhere have joined in the fun to promote awareness of the value of physical activity in the pursuit of happier, healthier, more productive lives. To further this vital mission, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports reached out in 1994 to

What Counts as Aerobic Exercise Any activity can count as cardio/aerobic exercise as long as it meets the three requirements above (frequency of three to five days a week, moderate intensity, and lasts at least 20 minutes per session). It’s important to not confuse activity with exercise. Not everything you do that is activity is the same thing. Bowling, fishing, playing darts, and similar activities arent necessarily cardio just because youre up and moving.

When to Exercise The hour just before the evening meal is a popular time for exercise. The late afternoon workout provides a welcome change of pace at the end of the work day and helps dissolve the day’s worries and tensions. Another popular time to work out is early morning, before the work day begins. Advocates of the early start say it makes them more alert and energetic on the job. Among the factors you should consider in developing your workout schedule are personal preference, job and family responsibilities, availability of exercise facilities and weather. It’s important to schedule your workouts for a time when there is little chance that you will have to cancel or interrupt them because of other demands on your time.

Parts of Moravia on alert as heavy rain causes flooding
Parts of Moravia have been hit by flooding, with rivers swelling to increasingly dangerous levels. So far flooding has resulted in at least one death and seen hundreds of people evacuated from the area. Further complicating the situation are strong winds and heavy rainfall which have knocked out power in around 10,000 homes. Meanwhile, meteorologists warn that the situation is not likely to let up any time soon.

VӖSTNÍK
Sustained heavy rainfall has led to high flood alert warnings on rivers throughout eastern Moravia, where water in some areas has already swelled, breaking banks, leading to flooding in places. Under threat are four regions: Moravia-Silesia, Olomouc, Southern Moravia, and Zlín – and the situation will likely only worsen in the coming hours.
Here are some of the developments so far: in Moravia-Silesia, in Třinec, floodwaters from the Olše claimed their first life, a 69-year-old woman who was found drowned near her home. Meanwhile, some 10,000 homes in the region are without electricity. Southeastern Moravia, too, has also been hit, under threat from the Bečva. There too, homes have been evacuated. Other rivers and streams with high flood alert include the Opava, the Lubina, the Ostravice, and the Morava. As a result throughout Monday the authorities in threatened towns and regions have been meeting to coordinate emergency plans and necessary steps, while the Czech government called an emergency session for Monday afternoon.
Certainly, the situation is dramatic and could change from hour to hour: the Olše near cities like Ostrava and Třinec, for example flooded its first homes early on Monday morning, flowing at more than 500 cubic metres per second at 8 a.m. compared to 20 cubic metres per second just a few days ago. A spokeswoman for the town of Český Těšín told Czech TV that the Olše had risen to its highest since 1949 – higher, for example, than flooding in 1970, when the river’s waters destroyed a bridge, taking the lives of several firefighters. She called the situation poor indeed.

In Valašské Meziříčí in the southeast, the Bečva has also swollen enormously, but there, there is at least some good news: levels are expected to drop somewhat in the afternoon; it remains in question whether that trend will hold. There, like other areas, the evacuation of dozens of people remains in place, while emergency steps include the preparation of alternative shelter – concretely a sports gym at a local high school, though reports said no one had taken advantage of the emergency shelter yet.

It now remains to be seen how the situation will develop throughout Monday and what steps will be taken by the government. The country and especially parts of Moravia have seen increased chances of flooding in recent years, with the worst flooding taking place in 1997, 2002, and 2006. — Jan Velinger
