Think differently and positively

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He

held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?” The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way.” I wrote: “Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.” Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective? Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. ʻThe Rain in Spain . . .ʼ Maybe your pronunciation needs some work. Would-be radio and TV announcers frequently use this test to improve their diction and memory: One hen Two ducks Three squawking geese Four Limerick oysters Five corpulent porpoises Six pairs of Don Alverzo’s tweezers

Seven thousand Macedonians in full battle array Eight brass monkeys from the ancient, sacred crypts of Egypt Nine apathetic, sympathetic, diabetic old men on roller skates with a marked propensity towards procrastination and sloth Ten lyrical, spherical, diabolical denizens of the deep who haul stall around the corner of the quo of the quay of the quivery, all at the same time

Start by saying “One hen,” and then add each phrase until you reach ten: “One hen, two ducks, three squawking geese . . .” and so forth. Your clarity will improve, and more people will understand your words. Cost of the 2010 Census The cost of this decade’s Census will come to some $14.5 billion. That includes about $2.5 million spent on Super Bowl advertising, but the Census Bureau thinks it was worth the price to reach many of the 134 million households that will receive the 10-question form. The main costs:

• $2.74 billion for follow up of those who didn't return their forms, the most costly individual part of the Census. • $2.05 billion for IT systems used in the collection and assessment of information. • $1.5 billion for regional and local offices and staff. • $4.3 billion for various headquarters costs, planning, research and miscellaneous expenses. • $257.2 million for postage. —SPJST—

From the President’s Department

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator presents June Fraternal Updates

Reserve your room now for the End-of-Summer Getaway Good times await those who are planning to travel to Corpus Christi August 13 through August 15, 2010, for the fourth annual fraternal fun weekend at Emerald Beach Holiday Inn. SPJST members will be treated to a hospitality party on Friday evening with Chris Rybak providing the entertainment. Saturday morning beach activities include a sand sculpture contest, horseshoe tournament, sandbag races, and volleyball. After lunch, activities will move indoors for a “42” domino tournament, Bunco, and pool time. Entertainment in the evening will be finalized soon, and details will be forthcoming in my July Fraternal Updates. SPJST has been able to secure special room rates for members who want to take advantage of the fun-filled weekend. If you have not already made your reservations, please do so soon to insure that you have a room at this special rate.

Flag Day—June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as “National Flag Week.” During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments on this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag, and we encourage you to talk to your children, grandchildren and friends about what the flag means to you. Because others have given their lives to secure our freedom, we have the freedom to participate in this national observance. Your lodge may want to join with veterans organizations in your community and be a part of the celebration. This would count as a patriotic act on your lodge’s mid-year report. For those members who are in the

Temple area, the SPJST Home Office will partner with William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home, located at 1424 Martin Luther King, Jr. in Temple for a Flag Day Celebration. Watch your Vestnik for the time and additional details.

Observe Father’s Day Sunday, June 20 In the United States, the first modern Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was first celebrated as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton, who is believed to have suggested the service to the pastor, is believed to have been inspired to celebrate fathers after the deadly mine explosion in nearby Nonongah the prior December. This explosion killed 361 men, many of them fathers and recent immigrants to the United States from Italy. Another possible inspiration for the service was Mother’s Day, which was recently celebrated for the first time in Grafton, West Virginia, a town about 15 miles away. Another driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent raised his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s efforts to establish Mother’s Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday in 1924. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

Therefore, Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes for her beloved father. Roses are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Hello, Everyone! Before I start my letter, I need to make a couple of corrections on my last month’s letter. First, it was not Bertha’s sister’s-in-law son Tim Zurovetz who passed away. It was Bertha’s sister’s son - her nephew. I knew that. I don’t know why I goofed. Also I wrote that we saw Bob Zvolanek’s big tuba in the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. It was Mr. Milan’s tuba. Sorry for the error, Rosie and Jerry. I will try and do better from now on. Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, May 13, 2010. Ann Clagett, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Prachyl, and myself arrived at 8 a.m. We

Page 13

arranged tables and chairs and stretched Dorothy J.’s quilt. Before we knew it, we had quilters all around. Thank you all for coming. By lunch time, we had 19 members and two guests Joe and Julius. Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. Thank you, everyone, for the many good dishes and thank you to all the clean up group. After lunch, the quilters went back to quilting, and President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Tim Zurovetz, Emeleen Maliska, Ann Skrivanek, Mary Ann Kubin, Agnes Toroba, Georgie Kubin Byrd, relatives of our members. Dorothy J. Kudrna read the minutes of our last meeting, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Ann Clagett read a thank you note from Dorothy Valek for her card and money gift she received while in the hospital. Thank goodness all is well with Dorothy. Dorothy Prachyl announced our May birthday celebrants for Eleanora, our Sunshine Lady, who was ill and

unable to attend. Celebrants were Ella Mae Zmolek, Ann Clagett, and Dorothy Prachyl. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ann and Dorothy. Eleanora has been suffering with bronchitis for over a week. She did go to the doctor; hopefully, she will get better soon. Ella Mae also missed the meeting. I have talked with her, and she and her husband went to husband Jerry’s meeting. We missed Marie Vrla. She had cataract surgery. I understand that all is going well. I was glad to hear it. Pat Fowler wasn’t feeling well and didn’t attend. I hope that she gets better soon. We were glad to have Victoria Vlk attend the meeting and am so happy to say that she joined the Circle. We are so glad to have you join us. Lil thanked everyone for returning the quilt squares sewn for the Christmas quilt. She had a few squares already sewn together, and it really will be another pretty one. Dorothy Prachyl reminisced about the Temple trip to see the Czech Heritage Museum. Bertha also reminisced about seeing her granddaughter Jana Reynolds and her husband Matt. Libbie Vrla told of how she, Lil, and Joyce first met Merlene Bravenec, and

how they have been such good friends since. She enjoyed having lunch with her. Bertha talked about and invited us all to the 75-year anniversary of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women at Sokol Hall Dallas on June 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. We thank you, Dallas Circle, for the invitation, and we hope we can make it. It sounds like a wonderful afternoon. We discussed the Fort Worth trip to visit the Milan’s home. We are really looking forward to it. The date is pending. I will let you know to see if the date will be okay with you. We all signed cards for Dorothy M. Kudrna and Geraldine Zhanel - both had a hospital stay; and for Eleanora Pelzel. Eleanora sent a card and money gift to Libbie Wisniewski and Georgia Wensowitch; and a birthday card was sent to Dorothy M. Kudrna. We will quilt for Eleanora in June. In July, we will have the elephant sale and show and tell. In August, we will quilt the Christmas quilt. Chances were being sold for the Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt that will be given away at the Polka Festival, Sokol Hall on May 30. Dorothy Prachyl thanked all who

Other News I was delighted to receive a lovely card and note from Helen Skrasek. It is always a nice surprise to hear from you. I keep up with all your travels through the Friendship Club letter. It sounds like you are really enjoying yourself. Helen, every time I go to my

son Trent’s house, and I pass the house that you lived in, I think of you. Dorothy J. Kudrna, Marie Vrla and myself were invited to Benny Valek’s wedding, son of Adell Valek. The wedding was at First Baptist Dallas Church, and the reception was at Adolphus Hotel. It was all out of this world. Everything was so beautiful. The couple, Benny, his wife Diane,

derful time at prom. I can’t believe all the things that they do nowadays. A group of kids, their parents, I mean, rented a big fancy bus that picked up the kids at one of the parents’ homes. They went to Dallas to eat at a fancy restaurant then back to KJT Hall in Ennis for prom then back to the home. They all changed clothes, and the bus took them to one of the parents’ lake home on Richmond Chambers Lake for the night. Calleigh said the next morning, they even skied in the rain. Can you imagine? Times sure have changed since I went to school. I am glad that they all had a great time, and all came home safely in one piece. SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton joins hands to assist shut-in

SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton adult and youth members and some friends tackled their Join Hands Day project with an attitude to do a great job, and they did just that. May 1 was a perfect day for working outdoors, and 30 people attended. The project was to clean the overgrown yard of 98-year-old shutin Lavada Burgett in Jourdanton. She can get out in the yard and down the sidewalk with her walker now.

Lloyd and Bettie House and grandsons Lane and Sammy were a good team. Evan and Mary Ann Barta and grandson Travis kept busy. Angel Valdez and children Samara, Angel, II, and Diego really worked hard as well as Joan Wiederhold and daughters Miranda, Liliana, and Isabella. James and Regina House with daughters Michelle and Kelly were a good team. Cassandra Reyes, Jiovanna Wells,

and her mom Joann kept busy. Mr. Lutz and daughter Madison were a busy team. Xzavier Reyes and sisters Xadie and Alexyss with their dad Chris worked hard. The members came with lawn mowers, weed eaters, hoes, rakes, and a shovel and even a tractor. We filled many trash bags and carried them away to dispose of. —SPJST—

Dear Readers, Saturday, May 1, 2010, was Join Hands Day. Lodge 84, Dallas held a diaper drive as its project. Several adults and youth came to the lodge hall and donated diapers. I’m guessing there were over 500 diapers donated. The diapers were donated to Captain Hope’s Kids. Thank you to everyone who made the day a success. I had two dance recitals in May. On May 6, my school, Brandenburg, had a recital for the dance students. I performed in two group dances. On May 16, my dance school, Broadway Dance Center, had its annual recital. I’m sad my dance classes are over until fall, but I will be dancing all summer. Fraternally, Melinda McClellan —SPJST—

“Legends” camp at Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center

Magic will be created June 14 to 18, 2010, when the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple opens its doors for a summer camp for students who have just completed the third grade through the sixth grade. The theme for this first-year event will be “Legends” and will focus on the historic Czech legends from the Old Country. During the week, the children will be making their own puppets, a theater, and developing a play to share with their parents on Friday evening. Puppets have been a part of the Czech cultural heritage for many generations. Puppets were made and used by families to entertain each other and the Charles Bridge in Prague has been, and still is, the scene of festivals that always include dramas and comedies featuring marionettes. Often, the plays were satires about politics or religion. Each camp day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast and sharing of legends. Boys and girls will then learn how to engineer, construct, costume, and operate marionettes. A snack will also be provided, and camp will end at 12 noon. “Legends” camp cost is $75 and includes all materials, tee-shirts, breakfasts, and snacks. Space is limited to 20 students, and volunteers are needed. To register for “Legends” summer camp at CHMGC, send child’s name, age, grade, tee-shirt size, complete address, parent’s name, and home, work and cell phone numbers along with a deposit of $25 (due by June 1) to: Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center PO Box 434 Temple, Texas 76503

To fully meet these objectives, board members are expected to actively participate in the regular meeting, planning and fundraising processes of the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center. The board meets quarterly and on an as needed basis in the museum’s recently renovated and historic building at the corner of North Third and French Streets in Temple. The next meeting will be on Monday, July 12 and all interested applicants for the two board positions are invited to attend all or part of the meeting which begins at 9 a.m. “Serving as a director represents a tremendous opportunity to help the organization advance its mission,” says CHM President Jerry Milan. “The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center is dedicated to fostering
