Fatherʼs Day Figures Fathers are important in more ways than one. Here are some facts and figures that pertain to fathers and Father’s Day.

• 64.3 million fathers are estimated to live across the nation. • 23,270 sporting good stores operate in the United States, ideal for buying Dad a gift.

• 140,00 dads are stay-at-home fathers.

• As of 2008, there were 1.8 million single fathers in the United States. • 85 percent of fathers have children under the age of 18.

• There are two families that have had both father and son as the United States president. John Adams and John Quincy Adams make up the first family, and George Bush and George W. Bush make up the second.

A Bit of Humor . . . In class, the teacher was trying desperately to get the students to think. He asked, “If the Pilgrims were alive today, what would they be most famous for?” One student quickly responded, “Their age.” Belly Buttons Q: How do babies get their belly buttons? A: When God finishes making little babies, He lines them all up in a row. Then, He walks along in front of them. He pokes each one in the tummy with His finger and says, “You’re done…you’re done . . . you’re done . . . ”

Killeen City Council approves November 5 memorial

The Killeen City Council approved the location, name, and design of a memorial to the victims of the November 5 Fort Hood shooting. In a 6-1 vote on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, the Fort Hood November 5, 2009 Memorial is set to be built on acreage between the Shilo Inn and the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and consist of a 60-foot wide pavilion with 13 columns made of granite and limestone. SPJST is spearheading the project. Salado artist Troy Kelly released illustrations that show the pavilion surrounded by trees with a flag pole inside the limestone structure. The individual monuments for the 13 victims will include mementos which will be chosen by family members of the fallen. SPJST State Field Representative Hiram Dixon came up with the idea for the memorial shortly after the shooting. “It’s important that it’s an opportunity for healing to take place, for the families, and families, and members that were wounded, or the

community itself,” he told news media. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek said, “What we’re hoping to do is be the catalyst that puts the private sector and public sector to contribute and make this project happen.” Maintenance and cost estimates of the memorial pavilion are currently undetermined. Killeen Civic and Conference Center Director Connie Kuehl told the council that SPJST has collected $36,000 with $25,000 more in pledges. SPJST and the city will work together on large fundraisers, and they plan to not only cover construction costs but also maintenance costs once the memorial is built. To donate to the project, please mail your tax-deductible donation to: Fort Hood November 5, 2009 Memorial c/o SPJST Home Office PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503-0100 —SPJST—

Lodge 26 Skidmore honors lifetime achievers

Dear Readers, Lodge 26, Skidmore held its quarterly meeting on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Skidmore Fire Station. The meeting was called to order by interim President Edwin Wallek, Jr. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was observed for members who have passed away. After the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports, District Seven Director Bob Bayer took the floor. He presented two Lifetime Achiever Awards. The first was presented posthumously to Mary Ann Denkeler “for loyal service and dedication to the Society.” Accepting the award was her husband, Wilburn (Denk) Denkeler. At one time or another, Mary held all offices and was president for many years. A Lifetime Achiever Award was presented to Ruby Jancha also “for

loyal service and dedication to the Society.” She was treasurer for many years. A motion was passed that we make a memorial donation to the Skidmore Fire Department in honor of Mary Denkeler. Because our regular meeting on the first Sunday in September is Labor Day weekend, it was agreed that we hold our meeting the next Sunday, September 12 at 3 p.m. at Skidmore Fire Station. The meeting was adjourned, and fellowship and a meal of sandwiches, cake, and kolaches was enjoyed by all. Fraternally Edwin Wallek, Jr. —SPJST—

The June meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Edwin Pechal. Beth Rabroker and Edwin Vasicek presented the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in a moment of silence for departed members Richard Bulls and Richard King May. May God bless these families in the loss of their loved one. She will be having surgery in a couple of weeks. Odell Baca is okay and recovering from a fall. Christinia Brenek gave everyone at church a scare this morning, but after visiting the emergency room, she is feeling fine and attended the meeting today. Chance Marek and Rodney Marek are under the weather. We are so happy to see Adeline Kohutek back with us after a couple of months. Welcome back, Adeline. Please keep all these members in your prayers for a speedy recovery. Welcomed as a visitor to our meeting was Eugene Brenek. Eugene is not a stranger to our lodge. He has volun-

teered in different aspects. We also thank him for the use of his trailer that we use for the auction at the picnic. Eugene, please do come again. President Pechal asked all fathers to stand and be recognized in honor of Father’s Day. Fortunately for all of us in East Bell County, we had a nice rain earlier in the week. There was quite a bit of high wind also, but we definitely welcomed the rain. The rain did put a damper on the tractor pull which was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Even with a few days of sunshine and hot weather, the grounds were still too wet for the pull. There were many who looked forward to the event, and President Pechal apologized for the disappointment of those who had looked forward to it. We are hoping to have another one scheduled later in the year.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Josef Orsak Selected for Government-in-Action Tour

Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) has selected Josef Orsak of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook to send to Washington, D.C. for its annual Governmentin-Action Youth Tour. This year, the applicants for Youth Tour addressed the topic “If you would only have one electrical appliance to use, what would it be and why?” Josef, the son of Bill and Sheila Orsak, will begin his senior year at Snook High School later this year. He has been exploring a penchant for technical knowledge by working in his school’s technology department and runs the audio and video systems for his church. Josef is also very active in 4-H, FFA and has been recognized for service to his community by the SPJST Youth Club. Being raised in a family that spends time in the kitchen together, Josef recognizes his life would be very different if the modern stove were not available. He reflected that his family’s stove is a way in which “my family gathers and passes on the legacy of cooking and baking kolaches and creating memories.” As he looks for-

ward to his trip to Washington, D.C., Josef believes he will receive some insight on the direction his future career path may take. The students are spending June 10 through 18 in Washington, D.C., where they will learn about the United States government and see the city. According to Paul Buckner, BTU’s Coordinator for Youth Tour, “This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the United States and to be encouraged to consider going into government or public service.” The Government-inAction Youth Tour evolved out of comments Senator Lyndon B. Johnson made in 1957 to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). In 1964, the NRECA began this program and every summer since, participating states send students to learn about our processes of government. Each year, 1,500 students and chaperones participate in Youth Tour. —SPJST—

2010 SPJST Kraslice Czech Easter Egg Decorating Contest Winners

Kraslice is the Czech word for Easter egg. Hand-painted or decorated eggs are the most recognizable symbol of a traditional Czech Easter. Historically, girls decorated the eggs and then gave them to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques of decorating Easter eggs each requiring a certain level of skill and artistry. Many different materials are used, including beeswax, straw (hay), water colors, onion peels and picture stickers. There

are virtually no limitations in creating colorful kraslice. Each year, in conjunction with SPJST District Spring Meetings, youth club members across the state are encouraged to design and create their own colorful kraslice. Kraslice are judged on creative ability, skill and design, and appearance and neatness. This year’s winners in the SPJST Kraslice Czech Easter Egg Decorating Contest are:

Choosing the right Fatherʼs Day gift

(StatePoint) Don’t reach for another generic tie or watch when choosing a Father's Day gift this year. Take a minute to think about what type of dad will be receiving your present. Is he an outdoorsman? Is he a gadget nut? Does he like puttering in the garden? By considering his interests, it will be easier to make smart buying decisions. It's about matching the right gift to the right dad. * Techie Dads: If your dad is always the first to try out new gadgets, he falls into this category. Luckily, he shouldn't be hard to shop for. If he doesn't already have an iPad, your search is over. Or consider a gaming system if he's young at heart. If your budget is lower, try one of the latest e-readers or a new smartphone.

Page 19

Even new headphones will work if your wallet is feeling light. * Outdoorsy/Sports Dads: Not only is outdoor equipment a great gift, it's the season for hiking, gardening and enjoying the outdoors. Golf equipment, camping and fishing gear, and GPS systems are great for sporty dads. For gardeners, an electrical shear will ease the task of tending gardens. For a bigger impact, consider a riding mower or tractor. * Chef Dads: If he can't be pried from the kitchen, he's definitely a chef dad. If you have a large budget, consider a new grill, complete with add-ons like a smoker or rotisserie. If you've got less to spend, try a new espresso machine or countertop portable grill. * Fix-It Dads: Bring on the most powerful electric drills, wrenches, nail guns and sanders for this dad. The choices are endless, no matter your budget. Be sure to get safety gear, such as goggles, pro-

tective footwear or work gloves. * New Dads: A digital camera or camcorder will help him capture precious moments. Extra camera features to look for include image stabilization and sharpness in dim lighting. Remember to purchase a memory card with capacity to save all those new memories. Bassinets, carriers, strollers or car seats will also please the new papa. Once you've found the perfect gift, protect it for the long-term. Most warranties that come with products are "limited." Give dad extra peace of mind by purchasing an extended service plan. Many protect against failures from normal wear and tear, accidental damage, mechanical and electrical breakdowns, and defects in materials and workmanship. “Today's electronics, lawn equipment and sports gear can be expensive, and even simple repairs can be costly," says

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

19

Jamie Breneman, contributor to The Savvy Shopper blog (thesavvyshopperblog.com) and spokesperson for N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc., an independent administrator of buyer protection services. "With an extended service plan, dad has access to reputable servicers should something go wrong." Even the handiest of dads needs help when it comes to repairing a failed product, especially with today's technology. But it's not just about repairs. Service plans also offer benefits beyond fixing or replacing failed products. The better ones provide help using products via free support on the phone or online. So whether dad is struggling with setting up or operating your gift, a service plan can help. This year, tailor your Father's Day gift to dad's interests and make it a stress-free year. —SPJST—

The King’s Ride Jízda králů

Inhabitants of Moravia are extremely hospitable and their lifestyle is in many ways only typical for this particular region. Characteristic features of Moravian regions are their rich folk costumes and unforgettable dialect. Dozens of folk music and dance troupes revive old traditions continually at lent celebrations, feasts, or harvest time, and bring to life the interesting customs, dance, and songs of the regions.

Villages of Moravia keep the national spirit and pride, as well as folk customs and traditions, up to this day. One such example is The King’s Ride -Jízda králů. In the last century, it was still possible to document a ride of the kings almost everywhere in Moravia; however, this showy folk ceremony with its ride on gaily bedizened horses is still observed now in only a few villages in South-Eastern and Central Moravia. The main participants in the King’s procession on horseback are the King and his aides, standard-bearers, heralds, collectors, and thankers. The king is a boy, age 10 to 12, dressed up in an old-fashioned woman’s folk costume, his hand/s proudly placed on his hip/s. His lips pressed together to firmly hold a rose and thus symbolize taciturnity. At his sides, two adjutants (pageboys) are on horseback and protect the king

by holding unsheathed sabers in their hands. Riding horses decorated with ribbons, the boys go around the town and chant witty verses to celebrate their king and ask for gifts on his behalf. The parade is led by an announcer (herald) calling out the words of an ancient message. They often also make rhyming statements about outsiders watching the ceremony. For this "town crying" they are given presents which are taken by the collectors.

In earlier times, these were boys who had been called up into the army, though, today, they are just ordinary young boys and men. Each year, the Ride of the Kings is accompanied by several days of cultural events including performances by children and adult folklore ensembles, cymbal and brass band concerts, parade of traditional costumes, and a market with traditional crafts, and many others. Taking place on a Sunday, the King’s Ride is the climax of a three-day event which begins on the preceding Friday with a competition to find the best performer of a Slovácko dance verbuňk. The Saturday sees audiences invited to performances of traditional cimbál music. Several theories attempt to shed light upon the origin of the Ride of the Kings. The best known and most recent theory is associated with the Bohemian-Hungarian War. In 1469, The King of Bohemia, Jiří of Poděbrady,

Page 21

defeated his son-in-law, Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, who, in order not to be recognized and captured, dressed up in a female folk costume, covered his face with ribbons and headed for his residence in Trenčín guarded by his company, who had to collect money from serfs to feed him. This version of the Ride of the Kings has been handed down for generations.
