Capps makes the Cut

Former District Two Queen Dawn Capps, a Tarleton State University graduate and granddaughter of Bertha Capps, received her TCLEOSE certification and is now employed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a park police officer at Lake Tawakoni State Park. Pictured, Dawn’s father Frank Capps pins her badge on her during a graduation ceremony. The four-foot nine-inch police officer was also presented with her service weapon — a .40 caliber Glock. Dawn and her family are members of Lodge 87, Temple.

Best Wishes, SPJST Youth! Many dedicated SPJST youth club members around the state are

preparing various arts and craft projects, individual and group talents, and royalty speech presentations for this summer’s district youth achievement days. Member Services Directory Next week’s June 30 Vestnik will be a special issue. It will be the 2010 SPJST Member Services Directory and will feature many members’ businesses that submitted cards to us. The directory will also list SPJST lodge and sales agent information. Thanks to everyone who assisted us with a submission to this directory. The next regular Vestnik will be published Wednesday, July 7. Why We Celebrate July 4th July 4th is the day Americans celebrate the nation’s independence from Great Britain. That might surprise Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration of Independence. The Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. Jefferson wrote to his wife, Abigail, the next day: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.”

But the Continental Congress didn’t approve Jefferson’s declaration until July 4, leading to the popular association of the Fourth of July with the official date of independence. By the way, the Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed by most Congressional delegates until August 2, 1776.

Patriotic Floats SPJST’s two parade floats are donning their patriotic regalia in preparation for Saturday, July 3 parades in Arlington and Belton. If you will be in either of these areas on July 3, please attend these awesome parades. The 2009-2010 SPJST State Royalty will also ride in the Belton parade for the final appearance of their reigns. Happy Fourth of July, Vestnik readers!

Missed Connections A business traveler got on a train in Chicago. He told the conductor, “I have to get off this train in Dayton but I’m afraid I’ll fall asleep and miss my stop. Here’s 10 dollars—please be sure to wake me up when we get to Dayton.” The conductor smiled and accepted the money. A few hours later the businessman woke up and looked out the window to see a sign that said, “Columbus— Next Stop.” Realizing he’d missed his stop, he called the conductor and started yelling: “I told you to wake me up! Why did you let me miss my stop?” A few rows away a woman asked her husband, “What’s that man yelling about?” “I don’t know,” the husband replied, “but he’s almost as mad as that guy they put off the train in Dayton.” —SPJST—

NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Member Regina House named Fraternal MVP

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Regina House—a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 14, 2010. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Teresa J. Rasmussen. “As a Fraternal MVP, Regina House embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Regina has been a member of SPJST for seven years, serving her lodge as youth leader, assisting youth members with projects, recording points for the State Youth Director, planning meetings and events, providing refreshments, chaperoning children at state and district activities, and providing transportation to camp. She competed in various contests at district meetings and participated in activities at the SPJST End-of-Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi. Regina helped plan and coordinate District Seven Youth Achievement Day, securing judges and providing items for the concession stand. She organized the lodge’s JOIN HANDS DAY and Make A Difference Day activities. She collected canned drink tabs to benefit Temple’s Ronald McDonald House, as well as eyeglasses for the eyeglass collection effort. Regina participated in the Jourdanton Independent School District’s projects, collecting “Gifts for Soldiers” and Box Tops for Education to benefit the elementary library. She was a part of the group that pursued the reinstatement of the Bluebonnet Reading program. Regina also assisted with teacher training in the use of Promethean technology in classrooms. She assisted with the Fall Festival and participated in the Veteran’s Day program and the Educator’s Cartel to benefit students in selling animals at the livestock show auction. She assisted with Valentine’s Day, the end-of-year,

and Christmas parties at school and helped facilitate the support meeting for parents of TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) re-tests. Regina served Saint Andrews Catholic Church as a lector at mass and for First Communion Mass. She taught CCD class, attended Catechist training classes, coordinated the cake room for the annual church picnic, assisted with the annual turkey dinner, and helped readers for the Christmas play. She assisted at the Christmas recital, “Stuff the Bus” school supplies drive, and CASA of South Texas Christmas Shoe Box project. She supported fundraisers for Jourdanton FFA, Atascosa County Livestock Show, Walk for the Cure, Girl Scouts of America, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-inAction program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.

About the NFCA The 124-year-old NFCA unites 68 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 9.3 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $353 billion of life insurancein-force and, in 2008 alone, contributed almost $424 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 94 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. our members to attend an open house in celebration of its 75th anniversary on Sunday, June 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas. Libbie stated that she called members whom she felt would have some interest, connection, knowledge or relatives of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women, and apologized for not calling all members as the RSVP was by May 23. She stated that if anyone would want to attend, she would call with a late RSVP. Libbie further quoted from Al Kercho’s May Věstník article from SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth on the 100th anniversary to be celebrated in September and their preparing a memorial, remembrance, or advertisement booklet. She stated that many of our members are members of the Ladies Circle and SPJST Lodge 92, and she thought it would be a nice gesture to purchase an ad. A motion was made and carried. Mary Ann Kozel will take care of placing the ad. Lydia Alholm also reported that if anyone has a memorial or remembrance to make, watch the Věstník for more information on this. Joe Kozel spoke on the origin of his accordion that he was playing. It seems that he purchased it about 35 years ago from a Jimmy Rovitto, and this person played this accordion at the breakfast at the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth for President John F. Kennedy. Joe went on to state the music from this accordion was the last live music that President Kennedy heard. Thanks, Joe, for

sharing this story with everyone. I’ve since heard that Rose Ann Spann took accordion lessons from this Mr. Rovitto who was a strolling musician and played all types of music. We had lots of door prizes, and they were brought by Lydia Alholm, Alicia Castillo, Sharron Connelly, Rose Cuba, Lil Kosarek (3), Debbie Skrasek, Rosie Steinman, and Libbie Vrla (two). Lucky winners were Elsie Anders, Paula Arsenault, Alicia Castillo, Lupe Esparza, Ella Greer, Marie Keller, Alene Kercho, Mary Ann Kozel, Geri Kortokrax, Anna Marie Moncrief, and Rosie Steinman. Getting a gift is always such fun! Stanley Krenek handled the 50/50 dollar game with winners being Marilyn Llewellyn and Kitty Rippen. Getting cash is also fun! Betty Krenek and Lydia Alholm read a few jokes which were enjoyed by all. After the meeting adjourned, grace was said and a great luncheon was enjoyed by all. cue and birthday cake in Azle, Texas, on Saturday. Her godson and wife came from St. Louis, nephew and wife came from California, and nieces, nephews, and cousins came from Seattle and Louisiana. Of course, friends from the Fort Worth area were there, too. On Sunday, the group attended mass at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Keller then went to Macaroni Grill for lunch to find all of her Johnson cousins from all around joining them. Anna is still talking about the wonderful time that she had in seeing and visiting with all her relatives. On June 24, Anna Marie Moncrief is leaving for Oberammergau, Germany, to see the Passion Play and tour with a group. On June 30, Sharron Connelly is leaving for France and Italy to visit with her former teacher friend. Ladies, we will want to hear all about your trips. On Sunday, June 6, on the front page of Section A and B of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram were photos and a story of a former WAVE named Jimmie Lee Long. She served in Washington, D.C., in the Secret Service decoding German messages. It stated that whenever she was asked what she did in the Service, she

Going the Extra Mile for Lodge 88, Houston’s 100th Anniversary Celebration

Thank you to everyone who went the extra mile for the 100th anniversary celebration at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston! would say, “I sharpened pencils and made coffee,” as they were not allowed to talk about what they did. When Lydia Alholm saw this, she got so excited as she was the supervisor of these girls while she was in the military, and this Jimmie Lee Long had worked for her. They have kept in touch as she lives in Arlington, Texas. It was a great story. I saw Marlene Bass in church on Sunday. Marlene told me that she and Willie Mae Becan stopped in at Manor Care to visit with Agnes Reznicek. They found Willie Mae playing dominoes, but she broke away to visit. They took her some sweets from the Ladies Circle meeting at SPJST Lodge 92 which Agnes enjoyed. Mary Ann and Kenneth Krivanek attended the memorial service on May 29 at the Old Blanco County Court-

house for Mary Ann’s cousin Charles James Tesar who died on May 14 after a brief illness. Charlie was born in Fort Worth. He had obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas, his master’s degree from the University of New Mexico, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. He also studied at San Luis Obispo and in Paris. He was a faculty member at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Charlie was an outstanding person—lived and traveled all over the world, He promoted educational and economic development with an emphasis on the empowerment of women and children through education. Following the memorial service, Mary Ann and Kenneth drove to Oklahoma to attend an event of Kenneth’s cousin. I can’t remember the event so I will write about it next time.

Lil Kosarek enjoyed her day trip to Cleburne, Texas, to tour the historic Liberty Hotel and see the performance of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” at the Plaza Community Theater with a group from Arlington. Lil said that they all had a great time. If any of you have not been to the newly remodeled Fort Worth Museum of Science and History then you need to go. I went the other day to see the Leonardo DaVinci exhibit, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read everything and pushed all the buttons; it was a real history lesson. Then, I went next door to the Fort Worth History Gallery. First, there was

the old history with photos and dates, then facts were displayed on the Swift Armour Meat Packing Company, and that all the immigrants were able to find work there. It gave the history of the settlement on the north side then there was a kroj in a case. The plaque read: “This could have been the dress that Anna Obal Milankovich wore when she married Joseph Milankovich. The couple met and wanted to get married, but didn’t have any money. One day in getting off the street car, they were hit by a taxi. They weren’t hurt in the accident, but the taxi company gave them $100 so they were able to get married.” Upon read-

ing this, I got so excited that I couldn’t wait to get home to call Jerry Milan, their youngest son, as I have never heard this story. Of course, while at the Gallery, I hopped aboard the streetcar and followed the history of the city and interurban rail travel in Fort Worth from the mid 1870s to the mid 1930s. Next door was the Native American Gallery which was interesting. Across the way was the Cattle Raisers Museum with the “Thundering Herd” which I also enjoyed. By this time, I was running out of time to see more. When you go, be sure to allow enough time as there is so much to see. All the children were enjoying it as much as the adults. The Noble Planetarium, Omni Theater, Children’s Museum, and lots of other things are there for all ages. I also learned that admission to the museum includes entry to the National Cowgirl Museum. So you need to go. It will be worth your time! Congratulations to Mary Ann and Joe Kozel who celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on June 15. The next meeting will be July 7. Don’t forget, we meet at Ryan’s Steak House on Cherry Lane about 11 am. There is nothing to bring but your appetite! So until, Keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Congratulations, SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, on Your 100th Anniversary!

Lodge 88, Houston celebrated its 100th anniversary and homecoming on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Lodge 88 in Houston, Texas, and what a wonderful day it was. The day proved to be a historic day for all members, and guest activities continued throughout the day. The famous SPJST Orchestra and Choral Group began the celebrations with live entertainment in the Chandelier Ballroom. The barbecue chicken and sausage with trimmings meal was outstanding. The Birthday Club Sisters again sold pastry as well as delicious homemade kolaches which were a very big hit with everyone in attendance. The continuous video program presented in the Blue Room was a huge success. It was so refreshing to watch these tapes filmed in the late 1960s and 1970s and see so many people dressed in their Czech costumes parading in a packed ballroom. The silent auction began at noon and closed at 5 p.m. with many people lucky enough to be the successful bid-

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth shares “American Spirit”

When my mom asked me if I wanted to write an essay, I asked if that is like a paper? She told me that I had to write about American spirit. She helped me Google the definitions and American was the easy one. The definition for American is a citizen of the United States. I guess I am American because I live in the United States! Spirit was hard because there were a lot of big words that I didn’t know. My mom helped explain some to me, and I just think the definition of spirit is having a good attitude. My mom asked me what I thought about when I thought about spirit, and I told her that I think about wanting to win a baseball game. American Spirit is the good attitude toward our country. I think ways we show spirit are saying the Pledge of Allegiance and celebrating the Fourth of July. The Fourth of July is about America’s independence. My family goes to a Fourth of July celebration every year at a church in our town. They have lots of fun games, and we watch fireworks. Fireworks make me think of America. I think we show American spirit sometimes when we wear red, white, and blue. Every year, we get flag shirts from Old Navy and wear them. I have American spirit! Public fundraiser to save Europeʼs oldest glass making school ~ Current Affairs ~

Europe’s oldest secondary glass making school, located in the north Bohemian town of Kamenický Šenov, is facing existential problems. To make sure that the school, which first opened in 1856, survives the next school year, a group of supporters launched a public campaign to raise some 500,000 crowns to tide it over. Radio Prague spoke to the school’s director, František Janák, to find out what’s at the root of the school’s financial difficulties. “The reason is that recently, not only our school, but many other schools, have had problems with getting enough students. There are, in fact, too many schools, and there are not enough students who want to study

there. After 1989, almost every bigger city or county was looking to have their own school for this or for that; it was a little chaotic, and the state administration did not really control the process. If you look at art schools, there are three times more of them than there were in the early 1990s.”

Isn’t there a problem with jobs for your graduates? The glass-making industry in the Czech Republic is going through some tough times . . . “Well, partly, it can be also a reason, but I don’t think it’s the main one. Our alumni don’t only work with glass. In the past, even in times when the glass-making industry was doing well, not every graduate really worked in the glass industry. Our students are educated to be able to do anything creative – art, design, etc. We have many alumni who are now graphic designers, painters, sculptors, architects, museum curators, even actors and writers and so on. So I think it’s one of the reasons, but not the main one.” How much money do you need to survive next year? “It’s difficult to say at the moment because that depends on the number of students who apply for the next school year. Our school is also able to generate some funds itself – we sell students’ works, we have international students and we get money from them. So it depends on how we’ll be able to do these things. But my estimate is that 500,000 crowns would be enough.”

VӖSTNÍK

If the fundraiser is successful and you manage to raise the money you need to survive the next school year, is there any guarantee that you will not be facing the same situation next year?

“This is it, because there is no guarantee, and that’s what’s really bad for us. But we’re on it; we are trying to get some sort of guarantee. I believe it’s in fact a political issue; it’s partly about money, but money is not the main problem. We have to get political support, and if we do, then I think we can find a solution for the future.” — Jan Richter
