Scrap Happy! This week’s shout out goes to all

youth club members who have been compiling scrapbooks for district youth achievement days. I always enjoy looking at these amazing pieces of historical preservation. And, seeing the past year’s Vestnik articles and photos all clipped out and decorated with cute, colorful trim is wonderful. It was so much fun putting a scrapbook together as a youth club member. I now see scrapbooks from days past on display at lodge halls across the state. It’s so important to record these memories and preserve them for future SPJST generations. Sure, scrapbooking is a lot of work, but everything great is work! Congratulations to each youth club that has taken the time to enter a scrapbook at YAD! That is accomplishment! Grand Salute The September 8 Vestnik will salute grandparents and grandchildren in honor of Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 12. SPJST members are encouraged to submit photos of grandparents and grandchildren. Greetings will also be accepted. Grandparents and grandchildren must be SPJST members. Start planning, and see next week’s Vestnik for the special announcement and information. My sincere thanks to Honorary Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar who shared this great idea with me a while back. Howard continues to promote the special “family” aspect of SPJST, and this feature is just a small way that we can appreciate family in SPJST.

Welcome, Delisle! Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride announced that Delisle (pronounced Deh-lile) Doherty is the new State Field Representative for Districts One and Five. He officially began his duties on July 7. Delisle is a member of Lodge 255, Katy. Agents in Districts One and Five are encouraged to contact Delisle for any assistance. Delisle can be reached at: Home: (281) 855-2841 Mobile: (832) 232-2049 Email: delisled@sbcglobal.net

Fort Hood Memorial Thanks to SPJST lodges and members who have been contributing to the Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial Project. To date, donations received from all sources total $42,304.25. Corporate and other pledges are not included in this amount. Working as partners with the City of Killeen, Texas, SPJST is spearheading fundraising efforts in the public and private sectors to build the memorial. The site will be a tribute to those who died and a testimony to the beauty that can be achieved when we work together. The artist’s rendering is now being developed into working drawings. “After these drawings are completed and approved by the Killeen Civic and Conference Center Special Events Committee and Killeen City Council, we will be able to project actual construction costs,” Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek said. “We are looking at up to two months for completed drawings and cost estimates, including landscaping costs.” An update appears on page 7 of this week’s Vestnik.

SPJST Spearheads Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial By Brian Vanicek, SPJST Supreme Lodge President

Eight months have passed since gunfire erupted inside the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood. Thirteen people were killed and 32 were wounded. The victims were mainly men and women who were preparing to deploy to battle zones or who had recently returned from them. On the afternoon of November 5, 2009, 13 Americans were sacrificed for their country — not on the distant soils of Iraq or Afghanistan — but down the road in Fort Hood, Texas. Thanks to the heroic intervention of two Fort Hood police officers, the rampage was brought to an end. In the aftermath of this tragic event, memorial services were held to pay tribute to those who had died or who had been injured. From that initial outpouring of emotion and out of the desire to honor and remember the victims of that tragic event came the concept of establishing a permanent public and living memorial. The idea was conceived by SPJST State Field Representative Hiram Dixon. Brother Dixon served in the US Army from 1969 until 1972, during which time he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. Working as partners with the City of Killeen, Texas, SPJST announced plans on February 10 to spearhead efforts in the public and private sector to build the project. The site would serve to honor the victims and provide a historic record of this tragedy in order to deliver a message of vigilance for generations to come. On June 8, the Killeen City Council approved the studied recommendation of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center Special Events Committee to proceed with the development of Fort Hood November 5th, 2009 Memorial Project. The project will include a memorial pavilion and garden on the grounds of the Killeen Convention Center. SPJST has also recommended that an endowment fund be established from the funds col-

lected to provide for the lifetime maintenance and upkeep of the memorial and garden. The initial response to the memorial project has been extremely gratifying. SPJST members, lodges, veterans groups, businesses and civic organizations on the local and state levels have been stepping forward to pledge their support. Through July 8, donations received from all sources —including SPJST members and local lodges — total $42,304.25. Various other corporate pledges — in the form of cash and in-kind services — which have been pledged are not included in this amount. Salado sculptor Troy Kelley’s renderings of the memorial project are being developed into working drawings by Abacus Engineering of Killeen. An advisory panel of members of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center Special Events Committee as well as SPJST personnel, are contributing to this detailing stage of the process. Assistance and input is also being solicited from the family members of those touched most closely by the events of November 5 as well as from professional tradesmen and craftsmen. Detailed plans for the memorial will require the approved of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center Special Events Committee and the Killeen City Council. When the plans are approved, we will be able to communicate projected costs of the project. We anticipate this project detailing and review processes to take between two to three months. This will be followed by a heightened public awareness campaign to enlist the support of additional private and corporate support. Plans have been discussed — but not yet approved — by the advisory panel for a public groundbreaking ceremony to take place on the grounds of the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on the afternoon of November 5, 2010. —SPJST—

District Three Youth Join to Support Captain Hope’s Kids

District Three announced a special project recently to benefit Captain Hope’s Kids. Youth and adults were challenged to collect items to benefit the organization. The average age of a homeless person in North Texas is seven years old. Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance reports that approximately 5,163 homeless individuals living in Dallas County in 2007. For the second year in a row, women and children represent over half of the total homeless population (53 percent). On any given night in North Texas, more than 1,100 children will sleep in homeless and domestic violence shelters. In the Dallas area, the largest representation of homeless children was in the age group of 1 to 3 years (19 percent). The mission of Captain Hope’s Kids is to meet the critical needs of homeless children. It is the only agency that actively solicits donations and funds for the sole purpose of providing critically needed supplies to homeless children throughout this region. In 2007, Captain Hope’s Kids distributed an estimated $459,362 worth of critically needed items to a collaborative network of more than 40 homeless service providers in North Texas. “We provided 391,064 diapers or training pants last year – that is 7,520 diapers or training pants each week,”

Program Director Brad Boss said. “We also supplied more than 9,760 school uniforms, supplies and back packs to children trying to attend school while living in a homeless shelter. Captain Hope’s Kids addresses the immediate needs of the many infants, toddlers and children struggling to survive and overcome the most difficult of circumstances during their most precious years. “It is our goal to meet the needs of these children so that they may become healthy and productive citizens in our community. Youth in Lodges 6, Cottonwood; 25, Ennis; 84, Dallas; 92, Fort Worth; and 183, Arlington collected 1,301 diapers, 30 Hope in a Box, 11 health aides, 292 school supplies, 28 backpacks, and seven toys. These were presented to Captain Hope’s Kids Program Director Brad Boss at District Three Youth Achievement Day on June 27, 2010. “Every lodge made this a fantastic day for Captain Hope’s Kids,” Brad said. The value of the items collected totaled $1,921.25. District Three Director Johnnie Krizan is also matching $1,500 of the donation with his discretionary funds. For more information about Captain Hope’s Kids, visit www.captainhope.org or call (214) 630-5765. It is located at 10555 Newkirk, Suite 580 in Dallas, Texas 75220. —SPJST—

Lodge 6 Cottonwood trustees meet July 23

President Ray Nelson opened the April 18, 2010, meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for all military and SPJST members. Roll call revealed all members present. There were 15 members and three members from the Cowboy Church—Greg Long, David Miller, and Brenna Switzer—present at the April meeting. Irene Vrabel read the minutes, and Teresa Anderson gave the treasurer’s report. Joyce Nelson gave the youth report. The youth and the Cowboy Church met March 20 at the hall to bake goodies. On March 31, they stuffed eggs for the egg hunt. They will need more eggs next year. There was a great turnout for the hunt, and the weather was perfect. Thanks to Melanie, John, and Hiram. They brought the float, prizes, and took great pictures. To keep the cost down, Joyce and the

youth club made the baskets for the prizes. We were glad to see the Elgin Courier cover the egg hunt. Thanks to everyone who helped. Join Hands Day is still undecided. Joyce attended the youth leaders workshop at Cooper Farm. It was very enjoyable. Irene Helgren gave the house committee report. She had two rentals to report. She thanked Ray for closing the hall for her. Gladys Mogonye gave the ticket report. We had one dance in March. Evelyn Gustafson sent a get well card to Delores Greinert. She sent a sympathy card to the family of Marjorie Prinz, sister-in-law of Irene Helgren. Our prayers are with you, Irene. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. Ray Nelson gave the trustee report. Johnny Vrabel had an excused absence. The trustees are getting bids on cleaning the hall. There have been some complaints about the condition of the hall. The rental fees were discussed. The Lifetime Achiever award was presented to Johnny and Irene Vrabel. Greg Long thanked the members for use of the hall, and he presented a check to help defray the cost of utilities. We thank you, Greg and Cowboy Church. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mikhaila Nelson. March birthdays were for Sam Morgan, and E.J. and B.J. Anderson. March anniversaries were Charles and Delilah Wilson and Glen and Shirlene Matetzschk. Those who can’t laugh at themselves leave the job to others. Irene Vrabel Secretary —SPJST—

Lodge 49, Rowena historical marker dedication this Saturday

SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena and Runnels County Historical Commission under the auspices of the Texas Historical Commission will host the dedication of the SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena Historical Marker on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the lodge hall, located at 706 Concho Street in Rowena, Texas, at 11 a.m. We are inviting all members and friends of SPJST to come for our special day. Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are founded upon the principle that man is indeed his brother’s keeper, and that each of us is responsible for his fellow man. It was this spirit of the brotherhood of man as old as the most ancient history, that inspired the inception and stimulated the development of fraternal life insurance. Not too many years after SPJST was officially organized, the SPJST

Page 9

movement and expansion moved westward into Runnels County. Lodge Pokrok, No. 49, Rowena was organized May 2, 1904. A notice appeared in the Czech language newspaper “Obzor” No. 25, published in Hallettsville, Texas dated January 20, 1910: “I am requesting all brothers and sisters to come to the next meeting to be held the second Sunday in February promptly starting at 1 p.m. We have an important discussion regarding the hall.” Jan Bubenik, Secretary. Apparently, the above notice was in reference to the first and original lodge building in the area. It is not known, however, whether this meeting concerned building a hall or disposing of a hall that had been previously built. In the minutes of September 12, 1926, Secretary John E. Kaspar announced that the original records and minutes burned in the fire that destroyed his home since the last meeting of the lodge. In early 1927, the members of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena and members of the local lodge Sokol organization decided to build a new lodge

building that would meet the requirements of both organizations. SPJST Lodge 49 President Josef Hoch appointed the following Building Committee: W.A. Halamicek, Ed Pospichal, Sr., Joe Kudlacek, George H. Schovajsa, Joe Holubec, John Chvojka, and J.A. Zak. It was this committee’s duty to get a cost estimate, find a contractor to build the building, and collect the needed funds. A new lodge hall building was estimated to cost $6,000. The lodge hall was built in the Cervenka Addition, Block 1, Lots 9 and 10, and part of 11. The current address is 706 Concho Street in Rowena, Texas. Years ago, local lodges would build halls so that members would have a place to gather and socialize, especially on Sunday afternoon. However, times have changed, and many lodges no longer want a lodge hall because of the costs of maintaining one - taxes, fire insurance, liability insurance, and upkeep. Loge 49, Rowena has the only lodge hall in District Four. We are inviting all members and friends of SPJST to come for our special day on Saturday, July 17 to the

2010 JOIN HANDS DAY

SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson joins hands with Girl Scouts, Boy Scout, Brownies to beautify graves at Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery

SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson Treasurer Carole Slavik met with Girl Scout Troop Number 3402, Brownies, one Boy Scout, Troop Number 11, troop leaders, and some of the scouts’ parents from the cities of Burleson and Joshua, located in Johnson County, to participate in Join Hands Day on May 26, 2010. The activity took place at Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas. Many military people are buried at this location. Every year around Memorial Day, the cemetery provides American flags to be placed on veterans’ graves. My parents, Col. George Earl Allen, M.D. and Wilma Allen, are also buried here. Prior to placing the flags on the soldiers’ graves, I gave the scouts a brief history of the veterans who were buried at the cemetery who

represented all branches of the military services. I even told them of an Army nurse who had served in the field in World War I, caring for the wounded soldiers, who was buried there. The scouts were given instructions prior to placing flags on the graves. One Girl Scout asked a question if we would be putting flags on famous peoples’ graves. I asked who she meant by famous, and she said, “famous people like George Washington.” I told her Fort Worth, Texas, was not where George Washington was buried; however, I also told her all of the soldiers buried here were famous to their families and were heroes to the United States of America because they gave their lives by serving their country.

After about 300 flags were placed on the graves, the scouts had accomplished their task. How proud all of us were to honor our veterans in such a small way by placing flags on their graves in their honor and in honor of Memorial Day. The scouts told our group of some of the soldiers’ graves they had honored with flags and what wars were listed on the graves. What a learning process in history and respect of our nation’s soldiers was achieved with this Join Hands Day activity. When thank yous were exchanged by the group, the scouts asked if they could do this again next year in 2011 and include boy scout troops in this great event. Of course, the answer was yes! —SPJST—

State Youth Director: July updates

Dear Youth Leaders, We’re off to a great start with our 2010-2011 SPJST youth year! During the month of June alone, we experienced and enjoyed Leaders-InTraining (LIT) Retreat at Cooper Farm and Youth Achievement Days in Districts Three, Five, and Seven. Keep up the good work, and we will all have another great summer. LIT Retreat Our annual Leaders-In-Training Retreat June 11 to 13 provided a great opportunity for our older SPJST youth club members to come out and have fun and acquire some valuable skills. This was a great opportunity for the LITs to get a good feel of all the new facilities out at Cooper Farm. I hope that everyone had a good time. The training that the LITs received this year will serve them well at their camps. Flag Day Contest Winners Congratulations to all of the winners

The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of our country’s independence and commitment to the idea of freedom. The signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what was important to our leaders and citizens. The people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Britain. Every time we look at the Declaration of Independence, we should think about all of the effort and ideas that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these people to stand up for what they knew was right — independence!

Declaration of Independence a Work of Art

Completed in 1819, John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence is a 12-by-18-foot oil-on-canvas painting in the United States Capitol Rotunda that depicts the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence to Congress.

Now It’s Your Turn! As noted above, the Declaration of Independence is a symbol of our country’s independence and commitment to the idea of freedom. Using the back of this sheet, identify some of the many freedoms that you know and enjoy as a citizen of the United States.

camping with us. We look forward to camping with you again. There is so much in store for this year that you won’t want to be late to start the activities. We ask that you arrive no earlier than 8:30 a.m. so we will have everything ready to go to begin our first activity at 10 a.m. We know how anxious the parents bringing their campers will be to see the beautiful campgrounds. With us having a shorter camping time this year, we want to take advantage of each and every minute we can to ensure we get in each activity to its fullest. Our schedule of activities will begin at 10 a.m. We ask that you leave your camper and their belongings at the pavilion on the right as you enter the campgrounds. This will be the registration area. After all campers are registered, they will then depart, with their chaperones, to the cabins. Please refrain from going to the cabins and touring the facility at this time. We will have a tour for you on Sunday, which I know you will enjoy far more. With the campers having spent three days and two nights, trust me, they will probably know the grounds better than SPJST State Youth Director John, who has been there for over a year. We want each camper to be able to be the tour guide for their parents. What better way to hear the stories first hand from your own child, to know exactly where and what they are talking about. I know how excited they will be to tell you and show you what a wonderful time we had. For your patience in waiting until Sunday, we will have a surprise for you. (I know I’ve used this “trick” on my kids and now my grandkids.) After your grand tour, and I’m sure picture taking, we will have a cookout for you before you leave to go home. Don’t bring a thing. We will take care of it all, in appreciation for you letting us enjoy your kids with us. I am so looking forward to spending time with each and every one of them. Here are the plans: Upon arrival at 9 a.m., register your camper at the pavilion and leave all belongings at the pavilion. A trailer will take things to cabins. Turn in all medication in the original bottle to our nurse Becky Zavodny. Medication cannot be unmarked in a plastic bag. Parents take all cell phones and any electronic devices, which include iPods and MP3 players, home with you. This is for campers and leadersin-training. If a camper has any of the above, you may receive a phone call.

Page 18

Please do not bring any expensive clothing. District Two will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. All cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone. No food or drinks. We will have plenty.

Things To Bring 3 towels 3 washcloths twin sheet set light cover pillow toiletries: soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.

3 changes of underclothes sunscreen 2 swimsuits—1 for the pool and 1 for the pond (For younger campers, please make a note which is to be for the pond. The chaperone will make sure they are kept separate. We want to be sure to keep the pool clean and clear.) beach towel 3 changes of clothes 2 pair tennis shoes or closed-toe shoes (All campers must wear these at all times while at camp). flip flops to wear only to the pool

VӖSTNÍK

A suggestion was made last year which chaperones really enjoyed: For younger campers, place one days of clothing in a marked plastic bag. This helps in getting ready in the early morning. The cabins are air-conditioned. Some activities that are planned include swimming, high/low ropes course, boating/tubing at the lake, trampoline/blob at the pond, paddleboats, kayaking, fishing (camp will have the gear), BB gun range, rifle

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth supports State Royalty at parade

Dear Friends, On Saturday, July 3, 2010, I went to the Belton Fourth of July parade with some youth club members from Lodge 17, New Tabor. We saw some really cool things like the Battalion of soldiers from Fort Hood. They carried the flags. There were bands, cheerleaders, horses, tractors, really big tractors, fire trucks, and old cars. State Queen Grace Dusek of Lodge

19

17, New Tabor rode a Corvette with State King Jackson. State Duchess Andi LaFountain, also of Lodge 17, rode a Corvette, too, with Ty. We watched the parade with Anna LaFountain and Grant Dusek, both of Lodge 17, some of the other parents, and Mr. Vanicek. He was a great tour guide. It was really hot, but a fun day at the parade. After the parade, we all went to lunch at a Mexican restaurant—Las Casas, and the restaurant was air conditioned. We had a great day! Thanks to Mr. Vanicek and John and Melanie for making it a great day. Your friend, Sierra Cash —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin youth ready for summer

Dear Věstník, To kick off the summer, the youth held a car wash with Lost Pines Cowboy Church on June 5, 2010. We couldn’t have asked for better weather or a better turnout. Upcoming events for the highly-anticipated summer include Western Days, District Two YAD, and camp. Although we won’t be able to participate in Western Days parade, the youth still intend to enjoy the kids’ parade and numerous booths. For camp on July 29, some youth plan to attend. Although Cooper Farm can’t compare to Camp Val Verde in some ways, it will still be a new and exciting experience.

Lodge 18, Elgin youth earns county baseball award

Dear Věstník, Our last home baseball game was against Manor Mustangs. We started out getting behind in the top of the first with the score 1 to 0. My first at-bat, I got hit by a pitch; I got stranded at first base. The end of the inning was 1 to 3. My second at-bat, I laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line which I beat out for a hit, and again, left me at first base. My third at-bat, I came up with the bases loaded and no outs. Before I stepped in the box and looked at the defense, they were up on the grass. I found my hole and ripped it between first and second base and got an RBI. This time, I advanced to second base, but that’s how it ended. My fourth at-bat, I started off in the count 0-2. I fouled off five more pitches then drew a walk. I got to second on an error, stole third, and eventually scored. When the night was over, I was 2-2 with two RBIs, a walk, and a HBP. When the season was over, I got All-Bastrop County and second team All-District third base, behind the district champ’s third baseman. E.J. Anderson —SPJST—

Lodge 18, Elgin youth: fun time at LIT camp

Dear Věstník, After a few weekends ago, I went to LIT Camp with my cousin E.J. We arrived at camp in the afternoon. We had the very last cabin of all the cabins, and along it was a walk. When we got into the cabins, they were nice. You could tell that they worked hard on the cabins. I stayed at LIT camp for two days and in those two days, I met a lot of new people who I can call my friends now, and I had a lot of fun. We attended a lot of activities at camp such as swimming, shooting, night hike, dancing, and outdoor activities such as the ropes, climbing,

TCGS continues Czech Veterans Wall of Honor

At Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Let Freedom Ring event in March 2010, the Czech Veterans Wall of Honor measured 40 feet long and eight feet high. It was enjoyed by the capacity crowd. Many encouraged TCGS to continue collecting photos of Czech veterans. We are pleased to inform you that TCGS is continuing with the collection and are looking at other possibilities to display the wall. Currently, we are striving to double the wall in size. Please mail your photos to Charlene Hurta, 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, Texas 77515 or email to fhurta@brazosport. (Note, photos will not be returned.)
