Editor’s Note
VӖSTNÍK
Our shining SPJST youth
Hats off to District Two for hosting an entertaining day at Lodge 29,
Taylor on Saturday, July 10! It was Youth Achievement Day with more than 300 craft entries, many talents, and eight royalty contestants. Great job, youth, leaders, and parents! And, if you haven’t visited Lodge 29, Taylor lately, please do so to see all of the improvements. Members have been working hard to update and beautify the facility. It is very nice! SPJST Youth Spectacular Results from State Youth Achievement Day and all seven District Youth Achievement Days along with summaries and photos from SPJST summer camps and Leadersin-Training Retreat will be featured in the SPJST Youth Spectacular to be published in lieu of the October 6 Vestnik. SPJST’s big day for its youth is coming up on Saturday, August 7 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple. Registration for all entries is between 9 and 10 a.m. Special category is at 10 a.m. and the day’s program begins at 11 a.m. Many scholarships will be presented, and the 2010-2011 SPJST State King and Queen will also be crowned. The day is sure to be filled with some of the most talented youth in the state of Texas. See next week’s Vestnik for a complete schedule of the day’s events and a special section featuring the contestants vying for the titles of State King and State Queen. And, make plans to be in Temple on Saturday, August 7 to support the youth of SPJST!
Win Prizes in Corpus Christi! The SPJST End-of-Summer Corpus Christi Getaway is coming up Friday, August 13 to Sunday, August
15. Many activities are planned for the weekend. See the schedule on page 3 of this week’s Vestnik. The Vestnik received word that District Seven will once again host a fundraiser to benefit the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. The district is seeking nice prizes to be given away during the fundraiser. If you or your lodge or youth club would like to help out by donating a prize, please contact District Seven CHM Director Roxy Bertrand (830) 391-0919 or email foxyroxy4158@yahoo.com. Paws for Recycling Thanks to Dorothy Pflughaupt of Lodge 88, Houston for sharing a wonderful recycling tip. “Everyone I know is trying to recycle, and it has been very effective. But, if you are ever wondering what else you could do with all your newspapers or shredded mail, take it over to the SPCA or contact your neighborhood animal shelters,” Dorothy says. “To defray costs of maintaining their facility, they are using it in cages and other areas for small animals and birds.” What a great idea, and it goes right along with Lodge 91, Crosby’s Paws Across Texas initiative. See page 8 of this week’s Vestnik for details. —SPJST—

Lodge 91, Crosby seeks lodges, youth to help with Paws Across Texas
SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby encourages lodges and youth clubs to assist with Paws Across Texas — a benefit to help pets and animals across Texas. SPJST lodges and youth clubs can help support animal shelters and veterinarian offices by soliciting food and money donations from the public and businesses in your community. Then, choose a shelter to benefit hungry and misfortunate animals. Through December 2010, let’s see just how much food and money we can collect as a fraternal organization. Each lodge/youth club is asked to keep a count on how many pounds of food and how much money it collects. Turn these numbers in to your district fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) who will notify the State FAC. The State FAC will tally a grand total at the end of the year. Let’s show the world how SPJST and its lodges and youth clubs can make a difference in our great state of Texas. Thanks for your support of this project. Fraternally, Will Locke, President —SPJST—

Tips to plan a fun family reunion
9
(NewsUSA) - As extended families spread out throughout the country, it becomes more difficult to get everyone together. Holding a family reunion, then, gives everyone a chance to meet, catch-up, and learn a little more about their family history. But arranging a reunion can be a massive undertaking, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. However, with a little planning, anyone can pull off a successful family reunion. Follow these tips to ensure a fun, rewarding family reunion experience: Create a family reunion committee. You will need at least two people to plan location, food, activities, budget, mailings, payments and record-keeping. The better organized your committee, the more smoothly your reunion will run. You can never start planning too early—you will need to start at least a year ahead of time. Pick a theme. Designing your reunion around a theme can make planning activities, food and decorations more creative. Family history themes, such a celebrating an anniversary, a birthday or a cultural heritage—a Mexican fiesta, for example—are always popular. Develop a budget. Your budget will influence the rest of your decisions regarding housing, food and activities. When in doubt, plan for affordability—as much fun as a Caribbean cruise might be, it’s unlikely that every family member can afford to attend. Plan housing. If possible, choose a location that offers a range of lodging choices. National parks, for example, often have hotels nearby and may have cabins or tent-camping available, giving your guests plenty of options. Keep the kids entertained. Don’t presume that the grandparents or teenagers will act as babysitters for the whole reunion. Ask for volunteers, and rotate babysitting duties. Arranging competitions, like three-legged and costume races, will keep kids happy. You can even present the winner with a trophy—Plaquemaker Plus (www.plaquemakerplus.com) offers a variety of trophies, including “Trophy Dudes” with bendable arms and legs. Create activities. Adults might be content to sit around and chatter, but integrating the whole family can be a challenge. Try giving each family

member a family tree to fill out, or arrange a friendly game of family trivia. And don’t forget to take a family photo. Plaquemaker Plus can even create heirloom-quality wooden plaques or acrylic images, so you can offer a unique souvenir to any family member who wants one. —SPJST—

Our dream will become reality this summer as youth members from all the districts will enjoy camp at a place we can now call “home.” Our thanks to so many, SPJST delegates of the 2008 convention, SPJST Education and Nature Center members, SPJST Supreme Lodge Directors and Officers, State Youth Director, and so many more who have worked so hard over the past year to make this possible. On behalf of so many—thank you, thank you! District Two its fullest. Our schedule of activities will begin at 10 a.m. We ask that you leave your camper and their belongings at the pavilion on the right as you enter the campgrounds. This will be the registration area. After all campers are registered, they will then depart, with their chaperones, to the cabins. Please refrain from going to the cabins and touring the facility at this time. We will have a tour for you on Sunday, which I know you will enjoy far more. With the campers having spent three days and two nights, trust me, they will probably know the grounds better than SPJST State Youth Director John, who has been there for over a year. We want each camper to be able to be the tour guide for their parents. What better way to hear the stories first hand from your own child,

After your grand tour, and I’m sure picture taking, we will have a cookout for you before you leave to go home. Don’t bring a thing. We will take care of it all, in appreciation for you letting us enjoy your kids with us. I am so looking forward to spending time with each and every one of them. Lodge 25, Ennis youth: camp fun!
Dear Readers, At District Three Camp at Cooper Farm, I met some new friends from District Five. We shot BB guns, bows arand rows, went canoeing, went on the blob, went to a lake, and ate snow cones and Oreos. Our skit was funny. There were four guys. Three went out to get food. When they came back, the fourth guy said, “Where did you guys get the deer?” They said, “See the tracks — follow the tracks deer.” The fourth guy came back with torn up clothes, broken bones, and a bloody neck. The three guys said, “What happened?” He said, “See tracks, follow the tracks train!” At the last meeting, I got third place for merit points. See you next time. Fraternally yours, Austen Holland —SPJST—
Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on July meeting
On Sunday, June 13, 2010, Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club met at the lodge hall. We celebrated Family Day and Father’s Day. The youth wished each father a happy Father’s Day. The youth decorated foam neck ties for their dads and grandfathers. They did a great job and had a lot of fun. Vice President Craig Cerny called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Colby Cerny. Then, the SPJST motto was said by everyone. We also worked on a Věstník project. Youth Leader Ardis Bacak wanted to know how everyone was coming along with their SPJST youth achievement day (YAD) projects. District Six

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth: no time to be bored
What a great summer this has been so far. The last day of school only means one thing in our house—time to finish up our District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) projects! It’s been a very busy summer with Girl Scout camp, YAD, and SPJST youth camp so far. No time
to complain of being bored that’s for sure! I still have church camp the day after I get back from SPJST camp. Then, we have a family trip planned for the end of the month to try and see 12 states in seven days . . . who can forget State YAD. I can’t wait! Paige and I were elected as photographers for our

Teaching kids about local wildlife
(SPM Wire) You don’t have to travel far this summer to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Community groups can help your children learn how local animals affect people and the local environment. For example, a local chapter of Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots program recently taught children the importance of ladybugs as natural insect controllers, and released live ladybugs in their school garden. State parks also are a good way to expose kids to “first wildlife experiences,” where they learn to use all five senses. Czechs remember Americaʼs sacrifice
Editor’s Note: Thanks to Lodge 172, Pasadena member Robert Mayfield for sharing this email that he received. Author unknown.
Have you ever wondered if they remember America’s sacrifice in World War II? I might have discovered the answer in a small town in the Czech Republic. I recently had the privilege of attending the Liberation Celebration of the City of Pilsen (Plzen) in the Czech Republic. May 6, 2010, marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen by General George Patton’s 3rd Army. My good friend Bob Nueske, was relentless in making sure I experienced what he had a couple years ago. We both had served in the United States Army back in the late 60s and not far from this city. This trip was life changing for me in so many ways, the events of May 1 to 9 touched me so deeply I wanted to

share the following snapshots I took to explain why. Why Pilsen and why every American should visit this city . . . because they love America and the American Soldier . . . . .
even 65 years later . . . . .
by the thousands, the citizens of Pilsen came to say thank you . . . . .
lining the streets of Pilsen for miles. From large crowds . . . . . To quiet reflective moments . . ...
Including this American family’s private time to honor and remember their American hero . . . . .
Page 21
This is the crash site of Lt. Virgil P. Kirkham, the last recorded American USAAF pilot killed in Europe during World War II. It was Lt. Kirkham’s 82nd mission and one that he volunteered to go on. At the time this 20 year old pilot’s P-47 Thunderbolt plane was shot down, a young 14 year old Czech girl Zdenky Sladkove was so moved by his sacrifice she made a vow to care for him and his memory.
For 65 straight years Zdenky, now 79 years old, took on the responsibility to care for Virgil’s crash site and memorial near her home. On May 4, she was recognized by the Mayor of Zdenky’s home town of Trhanova, Czech Republic, for her sacrifice and extraordinary effort to honor this American hero.
Another chapter in this important story . . . . . the Czech people are teaching their children about America’s sacrifice for their freedom. American Soldiers, young and old, are the “Rock Stars” to these children, and their parents want autographs from . . . . .
Yes, Rock Stars! . . . . . As they patiently waited for his autograph, the respect this little Czech boy and his father have for our troops serving today was heartwarming and inspirational.

After witnessing these momagical Bob ments, Nueske asked how could we not start a scholarship in Pilsen?
So we’re proud to announce starting in 2011, The Brian LaViolette Foundation will establish The Scholarship of Honor in tribute to General George S. Patton and the American Soldier, past and present.
Each year, a different military hero will be honored in tribute to General Patton’s memory and their mission to liberate Europe. This award will be presented to a graduating senior who will be entering the military or a form of community service such as fireman, policeman, teaching or nursing, a cause greater than self. The student will be from one of the five high schools in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
The first award will be presented in May 2011 in honor of Lt. Virgil Kirkham, that young 20 year old P-47 pilot killed 65 years ago in the final days of World War II.
Presenting Virgil’s award will be someone who knows the true meaning of service and sacrifice . . . . . someone who looks a lot like Virgil . . . . .
21
In closing . . . . . Here is what the city of Pilsen thinks of General Patton’s grandson. George Patton Waters (another Rock Star!) who we’re proud to say, serves on Brian’s Foundation board. And it’s front page news . . . . . not buried in the middle of the social section . . . . .
And I was lucky enough witness all of this . . . . . along with a new friend, Brigadier General Miroslav Zizka - 1st Deputy Chief of Staff - Ministry of Defense - Czech Armed Forces.
So please join us on this amazing journey . . . . .
Come visit Pilsen in the Czech Republic during the first part of May 2011. Bob Nueske and I have a feeling it will also be a life changing experience for you. —SPJST—
