SPJST Across the State It was another awesome SPJST weekend on July 17 and 18! David
and I had the pleasure of attending Lodge 49, Rowena’s historical marker dedication. What an accomplishment! Congratulations to the lodge and its members on this grand occasion. They marked it in a wonderful way with a ceremony and a noon luncheon. Look for pictures in next week’s Vestnik. After Rowena, we headed to Hawley, which is near Abilene, for District Four Youth Achievement Day. Youth from Lodges 215, South Plains and 229, Abilene displayed their crafts, talent, and royalty speeches for us. It was great to see the youth, leaders, and parents again. On Sunday, it was on to District One YAD in Caldwell. The day consisted of more than 300 entries from youth across the district. The Caldwell Civic Center was filled with parents, family, and friends supporting these young people in their quests for the blue ribbons! Great job, youth and leaders!
Thanks, Jerry! Big SPJST congratulations to Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas who will be celebrating 50 years of service on August 1. Now, that is admirable! The Supreme Lodge honored Jerry at a dinner on July 21. Several of Jerry’s family members joined in the surprise celebration. The Home Office invites you to celebrate this amazing milestone with Jerry at a reception in his honor on Friday, August 6 at the SPJST Home Office from 3 to 5 p.m. More details on page 4 along with photos of Jerry over the years. Thank you, Jerry, for your service to SPJST. Keep up the great work!
Doing Whatʼs Right Is Never Wrong I found these quotes that I just had to share. They are so meaningful. “God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.” —Chester W. Nimitz
“The reputation of a thousand years may be determined by the conduct of one hour.” —Japanese Proverb “Are you not ashamed of heaping up the greatest amount of money and honor and reputation, and caring so little about wisdom and truth and the greatest improvement of the soul?” —Socrates
“Have no fear of robbers or murderers. They are external dangers, petty dangers. We should fear ourselves. Prejudices are the real robbers; vices the real murders. The great dangers are within us. Why worry about what threatens our heads or purses? Let us think instead of what threatens our souls.” —Victor Hugo “You can stand tall without standing on someone. You can be a victor without having victims.” —Harriet Woods
“Laws control the lesser man. Right conduct controls the greater one.” —Chinese Proverb
“My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was less competition there.” —Indira Gandhi —SPJST—

We had three in attendance who had birthdays this month — Regina Peevey, Laverne Vanicek, and Frank Tomascik so we congratulated them and sang, “Happy Birthday.” We are sorry to report that longtime faithful member Lillie Zajicek is not feeling well. We surely miss her at the meetings and hope that she is feeling better soon. We are so excited to welcome Supreme Lodge Officers from the

FAC Shirley Hoelscher reported on upcoming events. State YAD will be held on Saturday, August 7, and the End-of-Summer Getaway is still going on as planned. Way to go, Sam. Good luck at state. As part of their join Hands Day participation, the youth club donated to the Fort Hood Memorial Garden, and the adult lodge matched their donation. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek spoke briefly about the Fort Hood Memorial and thanked the youth and adults for their generous donation. Birthday reported for the month was Barbara Macek on July 3. I didn’t think to get her age, but we wish her many more happy, healthy, and blessed years ahead. There were no anniversaries. We had some delicious sandwiches, chips and dips, fruit, and desserts for the social. Thank you, Shirley. And thanks to anyone who helped and brought desserts and cleaned up afterward. Good luck to all the kids going to State YAD with your projects and skits. As I have stated before and Patsy has said many times - you all are winners, and everyone is proud of you. We are having a dance on July 24 which will have already happened by the time my letter appears in the Vestnik. I hope that everyone who went enjoyed themselves. Depending on how it turned out, we may try it again sometime. Fraternally, Theresa Klecka, Reporter —SPJST—

I even noticed several of our members going back for seconds on dessert. I won’t call names - I’m just glad that you enjoyed it! News Last month, I wrote that Mary Ann and Kenneth Krivanek traveled to Oklahoma, but I couldn’t recall the event. Well, it was to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Jim and Loretta (Krivanek) Crisp. Mary Ann reported having a great time.

event. All enjoyed the visiting, food, memories, and news from all attending. Willie Mae especially enjoyed visiting with three of her 90-year young cousins. Congratulations go out to Willie Mae’s granddaughter Veronica Miller on her recent marriage to John Haslan. John will be in law school so they will make their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As of this writing, Rosie (Milan) Steinman is enjoying the visit with her sister Frances Mamula who came from Illinois to celebrate hers and Rosie’s birthdays on July 22. They were both born on the same day - only seven years apart. Frances’ daughter Melissa and her three children drove Frances to Texas for this surprise celebration. Melissa’s children wanted to see their cousins and as I hear, they are all having a wonderful time visiting and celebrating at the nieces’ homes of Frances and Rosie. I also hear that brothers Emil and Frankie Milan are enjoying all the events. Brother Jerry and wife Henrietta are in Italy and missing out on all the activities. Just a few days ago, Frankie celebrated his 88th birthday, and he is still going strong. Mary Ann and Joe Kozel enjoyed the annual reunion of the Popp family. Mary Ann said they had a great time. Sister Lil Kosarek and friends Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger from Dallas and I attended Southern District Slet in Corpus Christi in late June. We had a great time, the Slet was well attended, and the participation of children was great. It was especially nice to see Jerry Elzner’s sons playing on the volleyball team, and they did great. having Jerry and Jill Sijansky and other Corpus Christi seniors in the seniors calisthenics flag number. You all did good! On the way back home, we stopped in Austin and toured the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The current special exhibit was on the inside of the Governor’s Mansion which showcased the state landmark from the time of Sam Houston to the devastating fire of 2008. We enjoyed the videos and stories of the people who have lived, worked, or visited there. On the third floor in the little theater room with a couple rows of seating, there is a video on Fort Worth which starts with the early days of Fort Worth, showed the meat packing plant, several downtown scenes, then there is Rosie Steinman in her Czech kroj. There were several folks in the room, but I couldn’t help saying “I know that lady”, and they all got so excited. Next time you are in Austin, go to the Museum. It’s good! Helen Skrasek and her family Ron and LeAnne, Gary and Debbie attended the wedding of Karen Janak and Dirk Coldern. Karen is the granddaughter of Adele Janak Strand and the late Clarance Janak. The marriage took place at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Houston with the reception held in the courtyard of St. James. Helen said the ceremony was beautiful, and the reception was equally fabulous. Ron and LeAnne flew in Friday so that they could play golf on Saturday morning while Gary, Debbie, and Helen drove and were blessed with good weather. They attended a luncheon for the out-of-town guests at the home of Larry and Rhonda Janak in Katy, Texas. Later,

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Sokol Hall around 10 a.m. for the elephant sale, meeting, lunch, and show-and-tell. Everyone brought many items for the sale, and at 10:45 a.m., President Dorothy Prachyl started the sale with the tap of her gavel. It was fun. We started grabbing the items we wanted. There were very few items left to take home. We made out quite well on the sale. After the sale, President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Alton Adams, brother of our member Joyce Ehrenberger, and Agnes Chudej related to several members. Secretary Dorothy J. Kudrna read the minutes of the May meeting as she was absent in June. She then read the June minutes that were taken by Libbie Vrla. One correction was made. Sunshine Lady Eleanora had a card for all to sign for Victoria Vlk, and “Happy Birthday” was sung to her. Pat Fowler announced that we will quilt the Christmas quilt in August so

quilters, please come. September, we will quilt for Eleanora; October for Pat; and November for the 2011 Junior Sokol Polka Festival quilt. You know in December, we will party. Libbie Vrla reported how much the Milans enjoyed having us visit their lovely home. I must say, we all truly enjoyed visiting them and seeing all the beautiful items that they so graciously showed and told us so many wonderful stories about. Every room had so many pieces of art, sculptures, ceramic figures, medals, post cards and other historical memorabilia from the Czech Republic and Sokol’s past. We all were so excited to see and hear about it all. They also served a delicious lunch — klobasa on rye bread, beer if you wanted one, drinks, kolace, and trimmings. Everything always tastes so much better when someone else prepares it. Thank you again, Henrietta and Jerry. It was a wonderful day. Ann Clagett read a beautiful note from them, thanking us for coming. Irene Prachyl talked about her trip to Rome, Italy, to see her daughter Cheryl and grandchildren. Cheryl’s husband was on a business trip to Africa. Irene really enjoyed visiting the grandchildren still in school. She got to see them in several recitals. She and Cheryl visited 17 churches and prayed in all 17 of them. I am sure that Irene wanted to get home safely, and she did. I forgot to mention above, that Libbie brought calendars and past cards to pass out from the Milans. They were pictures of Milan Med’s paintings, a Czech artist from Prague. Thank you, both. We will put some in the Sokol Museum. Libbie, Lil, Joyce, and Joe Ehrenberger made a trip to Corpus Christi for the Sokol Slet. Joyce told of the great time that they had at the Sokol Hall visiting with everyone, the beach, and on the way home, they stopped in Austin to see the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Libbie had always heard that Rosie Steinman was in a movie there. She had to ask around, finally found the movie, and got to see Rosie in her Czech kroj. Libbie brought to show and to talk about her two books on Czechs in Uniform. They are really nice. Anyone who wanted to could look at them. Jerry Zmolek also has the books, and he showed his special Veteran’s pin that he received at Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s “Let Freedom Ring” event/meeting in Caldwell, Texas. A letter was read from Geraldine Zhanel. It is always good to hear from

her. She now lives in Waxahachie. Thank you goes out to Dorothy Prachyl for donating napkins. We were almost out. President Dorothy announced the next meeting to be August 12. We will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. She led us in prayer, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. As always, we had many delicious dishes. Thank you, everyone, for the food, the ones who set up and cleaned up — you are all just great!
Now, for Show-and-Tell Ann Clagett brought her 110-yearold grandmother’s quilt that she had made when she was 16 years old. It was really pretty and still in great shape. She also showed a family picture. Dorothy Prachyl showed a beautiful, old, small Czech doll from the Czech Republic. Eleanora Pelzel showed a basket with pin cushions made out of old quilts which was really neat! Irene Prachyl showed a wooden plaque with a cute Czech saying on it and two little hanging cups. She bought that for her mother back in 1992. These other items were from her daughter Cheryl’s trips: a wooden, hand-painted box from Russia, wooden hand-carved box from the Ukraine, wooden egg with the Blessed Mother on it, a little box from Poland; wooden fisherman from Germany, and from Israel, a hand-carved nativity
scene. All were unusual, pretty items. Martha Ritchey showed a 1976 picture of Circle members quilting back then. My mother’s picture was in it; a 1910 photo of the city of Ennis. Margaret Martinek showed a little, black, iron cook stove - a replica of what a salesman would carry around in the old days when selling stoves. Libbie Vrla showed a 1994 Czech Republic Slet field marker that she stood on at the Slet back then. Jerry Milan picked it up for her and had it framed; a picture of Charles Bridge in Prague from her trip in 2002; a lighthouse picture from one of her trips to New England; a picture from the Slovak Republic given to her by Joyce; a picture of Turkish dancers that she saw when she was in Turkey; a butterfly picture printed by the late Jerry Koubek; pieces of our dad’s ties; and a little crocheted doily made by our mother which was framed. It is a beautiful keepsake. I have one also made for me by sister Lil. Other News Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl’s grandson Andrew Cole who lives in Centennial, Colorado, traveled to Cooperstown, New York, with his baseball team the Spikes. Two of his games were shown live on the internet so they were able to watch Andrew play. He pitched and played first base. He also visited the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in Cooperstown. How great that must have been to see your
grandson play baseball way in New York. It was so good to see everyone. Stay well and cool. See you August 12. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club Members Enjoy Summer Camp
Dear Readers, I came back from camp at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm on July 18, 2010. On the way to Cooper Farm last Friday, Mrs. Haag took us to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural
Center in La Grange, and we looked around there for about 30 minutes. Some activities that we did at camp: We had a hay ride. We went to the lake and rode “the banana” and the four-person tube. We swam in the pool. We
played indoor games and did arts and crafts, archery, and riflery. We did the high ropes course, which was my favorite part. We also had a night swim in the pool that was really awesome. We went on a scavenger hunt to find clues.
I had a really awesome time and look forward to going back next year. Fraternally, Leah McDonald, age 10 Reporter —SPJST—

Promote Your Cause By Publishing a Book
(NewsUSA) - It’s common for celebrities who experience tragedy and want to help others to have a book published by a traditional publisher. But now, “everyday people” can do the same thing. The power of publishing has truly gone public. Thanks to continuing advancements in digital technology and print-on-demand resources, more people who want to make others aware of a worthy cause can have a professionally published book. When Margarete Cassalina lost her daughter Jena to cystic fibrosis, her world stopped; life, as she knew it, was over. Within one year, however, Cassalina went from the depths of depression to simply existing to recovery, discovering that she could not just survive but even harness the power of true and absolute love. She literally went from “beyond breathing” to living a full and purposeful life. Cassalina published her book, “Beyond Breathing,” through iUniverse (an imprint of indie publisher Author Solutions), and a film about her story is currently in production. ers anyone to publish a professionally designed book, maintaining complete control of the content, rights and marketing. For as little as $1,000, a book can be available for sale on all leading online retailers and ordered at any bookstore. “I’ll never stop the fight to eradicate cystic fibrosis by spreading the word, speaking to groups and raising money,” says Cassalina. “The ability to publish a book and use it as a vehicle to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis has been invaluable.” In Reg Green’s case, his world turned upside down when his son Nicholas was murdered. Green published The Nicholas Effect through Author Solutions imprint AuthorHouse. The book chronicles his experience and promotes organ donation. Nicholas literally saved the lives of seven people who received his organs. Green has sold tens of thousands of books and speaks regularly on the topic of organ donation. “I was able to expand awareness of the importance of organ donation and use my book as a tool to get in front of people and relay the story of how my beloved son saved the lives of so many,” says Green. “Indie book publishing isn’t just about fulfilling literary dreams,” says Keith Ogorek of Author Solutions. “A book is a powerful tool to educate and make the public aware of pressing social issues.” —SPJST—

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Enjoy Alaskan Cruise
Dear Věstník Readers, Recently, my family and I went on a cruise to Alaska and let me tell ya, there are only two weather conditions up there — cold and wet, and colder and wetter. We made three stops in Alaska which were Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. For our last stop, we went to Prince Rupert, Canada. There was a lot of fun stuff to do on the ship, like see shows, movie showings, bingo, scavenger hunts, and my favorite, ping-pong, just to name a few. We made friends with people from all over America. Despite the really cold weather that was so different from our wonderful Texas heat, it was fun! Sincerely, Michelle House, District Seven Queen —SPJST—
Dear Věstník Readers, A few weeks ago, my family and I went on a cruise to Alaska. For the first three days of the vacation, we stayed with my aunt who lives in Washington state. Our excursions included going to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway in Alaska and in Canada, we went to Prince Rupert, B.C. Here is a picture of our ship, The Norwegian Star. Sincerely, Kelly House —SPJST—
