Best Wishes, SPJST Youth! State Youth Achievement Day is this Saturday, August 7 at the Frank

W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. A schedule of the day’s events appears on the back page of this week’s Vestnik. State King Jackson Durham and State Queen Grace Dusek will be crowning a new king and queen who will have big shoes to fill. King Jackson and Queen Grace have represented SPJST wonderfully over the past year. Congratulations — and thanks — for a job well done! They were supported by State Duke Brandon Droste and State Duchess Andi LaFountain. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these young people over the past year. Best wishes to all youth participating in this year’s State Youth Achievement Day!

Donate . . . Donʼt Accumulate! Thanks to Larry W. and Dorothy Pflughaupt of Lodge 88, Houston for sharing this photo of a recycling box idea. NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism

Lodge 49, Rowena Member Brad Teplicek named Fraternal MVP

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Brad Teplicek—a member of SPJST, Lodge 49, Rowena, Texas—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of July 26, 2010. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Teresa J. Rasmussen. “As a Fraternal MVP, Brad Teplicek embodies the heart of fraternalism through his hard work, dedication and generosity.” Brad has been a member of SPJST for 42 years. He served his lodge on the hall committee, assisted with the annual farm sale auction, JOIN HANDS DAY, and Make A Difference Day. He also collected Christmas gifts for underprivileged children and delivered the gifts to Runnels County Sheriff’s Department. He collected school supplies and delivered them to schools in Runnels County for needy children. Brad maintained the yard at the hall, assisted with meals for funerals, and helped with hamburger socials. He participated in the Christmas celebration, helped decorate the hall, and cleanup. He also served on the SPJST Education and Nature Center Board of Directors. A member of First United Methodist Church, Brad served on the board of trustees and assisted with the church’s Lord’s Acre Festival fundraiser. As a member of the Rowena Volunteer Fire Department, he was the department’s training officer. He devoted countless hours to fire department fundraisers, as well as protecting Runnels County citizens’ homes and property. Brad also volunteered his services with the Rowena Water Supply Corporation, assisting with upkeep and maintenance. As a member of the Texas Chapter - Soil and Water Conservation Society, he served on the annual planning committee and as chairman of the annual golf tournament and the Texas Section Range Society. Brad volunteered time as a coach for the local boys’ Little League, the girls’

softball team, and youth basketball teams at the local YMCA. Brad participated in the Rowena Lions Club annual Fourth of July cook-off and the SPJST snow-cone stand. He volunteered with maintenance projects at the Evergreen Cemetery, served on the Southern Runnels Wind Energy project, served as judge for the local VFW essay contest, and provided programs to the general public as well as school children on various natural resource conservation issues. Brad participated in the VFW flag-etiquette presentation. Teplicek also volunteered at the Zoar Community Church, where he worked with other volunteers in helping to make improvements for the disabled. He participated in the city of Eden’s fall festival and provided informational programs at the Natural Resource Day at Paint Rock for students and teachers in Concho and Runnels County. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-inAction program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities.

About NFCA The 124-year-old NFCA unites 68 notfor-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 9.3 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s membersocieties maintain more than $353 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2008 alone, contributed almost $424 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 94 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. State FAC: August Fraternal Updates From the President’s Department

Fall Meetings Start in September District Fall Fun Days will begin in September. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business should have been taken care of at the spring meeting. Only emergency issues should be brought up and discussed. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, visit with them and have a fun day. District One—TBA District Two—September 19 District Three—October 24 District Four—TBA District Five—September 19 District Six—September 19 District Seven—September 12

Please watch your Vestnik for additional dates and times for the fun day in your district and plan to attend.

Educational Seminars Coming This Fall Watch for details to be announced in the Vestnik in the coming weeks on a series of educational seminars to be presented throughout the districts by Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point member James Lee and Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Mr. Lee is an experienced financial advisor who has helped many individuals and families with their financial planning needs. The presentations, which will begin this fall, will vary from district to district. SPJST members and non-members alike will have the opportunity to learn more about topics ranging from life insurance, financial planning basics, and retirement income planning to college and estate planning and stocks and bonds. SPJST Supreme Lodge discussed and approved the educational seminar program at its July meeting.

SPJST Czech Camp Coming October 8 to 10 SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm is a great place to reunite with your SPJST friends and family. SPJST Czech Camp will be a weekend social and cultural experience oriented towards adults and families with older children. Attendance will be limited to approximately 72 participants. The weekend will offer indoor and outdoor activities, dining, socializing and Czech cultural activities. Sleeping accommodations are dormitory style with separate accommodations for males and females. Watch for

details soon, including registration information, to appear in the Vestnik.

Mid-Year Report The deadline for mailing your pink mid-year fraternal form to the SPJST Home Office was July 16. Thanks to the lodges who submitted this report on time. Even so, there are some lodges who have not mailed this report. All lodges who do not submit all paperwork will receive a reduced incentive check or possibly not one at all. As you may recall, in 2008, the Supreme Lodge voted that any lodge who earns an incentive award and has not submitted all the necessary paperwork (MidYear, Year-End, Fraternal Services Report, Community Service, Officer Listing, 990/990T, etc.) by the January deadline will be penalized a percentage of the award each month they are late. Those who do not have reports in the Home Office by March 1 will not receive any incentive money. These reports are extremely important as Tammy has deadlines to compile your information to be submitted to the National Fraternal Congress so that we may keep our non-tax status. If you have not already done so, please mail your report to the office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator as soon as possible so we can close the books on the first half of the year. If you have any questions or require assistance in filling out the form, please call (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke@wmconnect.com or contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (254) 773-1575, (800) 7277578, or email tammym@spjst.com. Your District FAC is also available to assist you. They are listed below. 2010 SPJST State Tournaments Thanks to all lodges who submitted an interest in hosting one or more of our 2010 State Tournaments. The host lodges are determined by a random drawing at the July SPJST Supreme Lodge meeting. The following lodges were selected in this drawing to host state tournaments in 2011:

Progressive 42—January 8, 2011 Lodge 81, Needville Tarok—February 5, 2011 Lodge 84, Dallas Straight Dominoes—March 5, 2011 Lodge 15, Buckholts Regular 42—April 2, 2011 Lodge 48, Beyersville

We are looking forward to working with these lodges next year. If your lodge submitted an interest but was not drawn, thanks for your interest. Do not give up—try again next year. We are here to help if you need assistance. Please feel free to call me (210) 413-3053, email cejenke@wmconnect.com, or Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 7277578 or (254) 773-1575 or email tammym@spjst.com. Joyce Nelson gave the FAC report. The Corpus Christi getaway is August 13 to 15 and filling up fast. You need to book if you are planning on going. State YAD is August 7 in Temple. If you have a business, you can place an ad in the Vestnik. Joyce gave the youth report. They had a district swimming party on June 18, in Temple. They did not have a float for Western Days. They attended YAD in Taylor on July 10, Mikhaila was the only Elgin youth to participate. The McDade Watermelon Fest was July 10—the same day as YAD in Taylor so they were not able to participate this year. Camp will be at SPJST ENC at Cooper Farm this year with District Four. They had their youth leaders’ meeting at Cooper Farm, and it was very nice. The youth are planning to go to Corpus Christi. They need three rooms. The cost is $109 per room. They are asking for $250 to help with the cost of rooms. Jim Mogonye made a motion to give the youth $250, seconded by Charlie Anderson. Gladys Mogonye gave the ticket report. We really did enjoy the good music. If you missed the Incredible Music Makers, you missed a really good band. They are fairly new and have really improved. Irene Helgren gave the house report. On June 24, we had the Swedish Fest. The hall was open for Western Days for class reunions. We do not charge for this. We had $65 in donations. July 10 was a wedding. Irene thanked Ray Nelson for closing the hall. She thanked Irene Vrabel for the picture in the Vestnik. Artie Monson had no report at this time. Evelyn Gustafson had no report. Irene Vrabel said SPJST should have sent Evelyn a get well card. We are happy to see you well. Johnny Vrabel gave the trustee report. All trustees were present except Allen Meyer. The floors will be redone in July. Johnny gave a report on how he found the hall when he came to change the filters. The kitchen was filthy. There were two trash cans half full, and one over flowing. This is unacceptable as this brings mice, rats, and roaches. The motorcycle group had moved the storage building down close to the road. Did anyone approve this? As a trustee, he was not aware of this. One air conditioner was on and set to 62 degrees. It was so cold it was like being in the cold vault. These items all need to be addressed. Charles Wilson gave the bar report. Ray Franks from The Christian

Church is planning an after-homecoming dance for the teens in Elgin and all surrounding area. The afterhomecoming activity has been stopped because of Elgin’s curfew. Church activities are exempt; therefore, they are looking for a place to hold an after-game dance. They would invite all the surrounding communities to take part. They have a band that will play for $500. This would be sometimes in September. Irene Vrabel made a motion to let them have the hall at no charge, seconded by Joyce Nelson. Motion carried. The bar will be open with no alcohol allowed at this event. The Christian Church will provide chaperones. Artie Monson discussed the battle dances. The three-band dance will have a $10 admission. The two-band will have an $8 admission. We need to be thinking about the Christmas dance and the New Year’s Eve dance. Do we want to serve refreshments at Christmas? For New Year’s, will we have black-eyed peas and corn bread again? Artie needs to know so she can have the schedules printed. This will be decided at the next meeting. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Joyce Nelson and Johnny Vrabel. Benediction was given by Reverend Art Mavrode. The marker reads: On May 2, 1904, eighteen charter members organized SPJST Lodge No. 49 in Runnels County, founded just eight years after the SPJST’s organization, Lodge No. 49 continued the Czech-Texan benevolent society’s goals of promoting fellowship and

Czech culture, and providing life insurance and care for its members. In 1927, the lodge began working with local Sokol organization members on a new building. Once opened, it functioned as a meeting place for the groups, in addition to other organizations. Sporting activities and community and celebratory events have also been held on the grounds. Today, SPJST Lodge No. 49 continues to promote fraternalism while building up the Rowena community. (2009) Marker is Property of the State of Texas.

Following the ceremony, lunch was served by lodge members including Sylvia Rollwitz, Laura Pospichal, Jackie Pospichal, and Betty Stephens. Visiting and door prizes were enjoyed by all 50 people in attendance. Visitors from the area included the towns of Ballinger, Miles, Winters, San Angelo, and Rowena. Legendary big band of Czech Radio celebrates 50 years

The legendary Big Band of Czech Radio is celebrating 50 years of its existence. The history of the band goes back to the 1960s, when it was called the Czechoslovak Radio Orchestra. Over the years, the band cooperated with most of the country’s best known jazz and pop musicians. On Wednesday it will celebrate its anniversary with a concert at Národní Dům in Prague. Czechoslovak Radio Orchestra was founded by excellent jazz musician and composer Karel Krautgartner, who was in charge until 1968. Throughout the time, many personalities whose names have become K. Krautgartner part of Czech jazz history have passed through the orchestra among them Karel Hála, Vlasta Průchová, and Laco Déczi. The very first concert of the Czechoslovak Radio Orchestra took place on March 28, 1960 at Prague’s Obecní Dům.

Felix Slováček, who was in charge of the band from 1983 until 2002, explains what it was like to work in close cooperation with the radio: “The advantage was that we went to work regularly and had enough time to prepare for recordings and concerts, unlike today, when people have a regular job and in the evenings play in an orchestra. We didn’t have to fight for survival and we could con-

centrate solely on music. There were two other conductors, one in charge of the jazz and one in charge of the dance orchestra, so we really had a wide scope.”

The orchestra has always promoted young singers, many of whom would later become big stars, such as Karel Gott. The home studio of the orchestra is the A studio in Prague’s district of Karlín. Every month, it holds a public recording with a special guest, which is aired live on Czech Radio. And what was on the programme of the concert to mark the 50th anniversary of the Big Band of Czech Radio? Jan Spálený was the orchestra’s programme director:

“We cannot fit 50 years of our history with all of the soloists and other musicians into a programme which is one or two hours long, so we decided to focus on what we are doing now and invite people we cooperate with now. All we are doing now is the result of the effort of Karel Krautgartner and of the 50-year-long history of the orchestra.”

Among the guests at the concert were Karel Gott, Marta Kubišová, Eva Pilarová, and many others whose careers have been closely connected with the Big Band of Czech Radio. — Ruth Fraňkova

SPJST Members Welcome Czech Visitors

Jan Johnson who works with Dorothy Pflughaupt at EOG Resources was anticipating guests from the Czech Republic recently. Knowing Dorothy’s connection to things Czech through her and Larry’s membership at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston thought that Jan’s guests, beside seeing the customary sites of Houston, would enjoy a trip to the Czech Center Museum Houston and the opportunity to speak Czech. Unfortunately their short visit did not allow this to happen, but Jan arranged a Texas barbecue dinner at her home to entertain the visitors from Prague, Czech Republic. Visitors included Jiri Baxa, Josef Zofl, and Otakar Dolezi. Jiri Baxa’s 50th birthday gift to himself was a four-week trip to the

United States. He has been planning the trip for the past three years. Prague-born Jiri works for American company Richco, Inc. where he is the managing director of branches in Prague and Munich. Jiri’s father, Jiri Baxa, Sr., has performed with the Prague Philharmonic, first violin for 45 years. Josef Zofl is 65 and retired. He lives in Prague and is a native of Litomysl, home of maestro Bedrich Smetana, famous composer of works like The Bartered Bride and Ma Vlast. Otakar “Ota” Dolezi, age 61, is a Prague native and close friend of Josef’s. He is semi-retired in telephone maintenance service. Jan Johnson, who is of Czech heritage, met Josef through her cousin on

The visitors enjoyed a wonderful tour of the United States, East coast, Grand Canyon Circle, San Antonio, NASA, Houston, and New Orleans. They were delighted to meet and enjoy hospitality from the Johnson family—Jan, husband Dave, daughter Heather, son Jeff—along with friends Larry W. and Dorothy Pflughaupt, Robert and Martha Bernardini, and Effie and Bill Rosene. Czech heritage promoterʼs death mourned by many

Caldwell Mayor Killed in Car Crash Posted: 10:54 PM Jul 26, 2010 Reporter: KBTX Staff Email Address: news@kbtx.com

Bernard Rychlik, 71, died from injuries sustained during a two-vehicle accident Monday night. The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. on Highway 36, just south of Caldwell. Rychlik was reportedly on his way to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall when he apparently missed his turn and tried to make a U-turn. A truck behind the mayor hit his vehicle, pushing it across the center lane and into a ditch. Rychlik was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Two people in the other vehicle were taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Burleson County Sheriff Dale Stroud tells News 3 that this is a great loss for the community. He said Rychlik was well known and that he will be greatly missed.

Page 21

A longtime employee of Woodson Lumber, Rychlik was also the public address announcer for Caldwell High School football and baseball games for years. He also was at the forefront of publicizing the annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell, which is known as the Kolache Capital of Texas. This is statement Woodson Lumber released Tuesday afternoon (July 27) about Rychlik’s career with the Caldwell based lumber company:

“Bernard Rychlik came to work at Woodson Lumber Company of Caldwell December 26, 1955, at the age of 16. He served in all capacities imaginable in his 55 years with the Woodson family. He held every position from management to building homes and sales. Bernard was the first one to the office every day arriving well before daylight and greeting each person with his warm and loving smile and a cup of coffee. Bernard loved people and people loved him back; your friends instantly became his friends. He was respected and trusted by everyone he came in contact with, both in his business and personal life. If you knew Bernard you knew that you could count on him at all times and in any situation. During times of need he would open the lumberyard to serve the people of Caldwell and lend a helping hand wherever he could. Bernard was a true friend to all and wanted to see every person succeed. That is especially so with the young employees of Woodson; Bernard loved to take them under his wing and guide them. No one was more proud to see a young person follow in his footsteps and find success in service. We are all grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a great man for the last 55 years. We have all learned from his vast knowledge and his deep commitment to help others. He continues to represent the kind of person we all aspire to be. Bernard will be greatly missed by everyone in the Woodson organization.”

dancing polka after polka, his love for life was immeasurable. “The Czech ethnic groups are very happy type of people and they show it. They let the happiness out on that day and most of the time for that matter,” said Rychlik in the same interview. Everywhere in this small community, Bernard had a hand in something. From leading Kolache Festival, serving as mayor, helping with little league, and even as the PA announcer for the Caldwell Hornet Football team. “When you start talking about Mr. Rychlik and what he does in the support of our athletic program, I mean he not only supported football, he was at baseball, softball, track meets, he helped us with everything he could help us with. He’s a tremendous supporter, he leaves a tremendous legacy in Caldwell, Texas,” said Caldwell High School Varsity Football Coach Dale Williams. “He was a bit of a renaissance man because he was involved in so many things. He was deeply involved in his church, with the schools, with athletics at the schools. I think in the last 40 or 50 years, he missed one half of one football game,” said Burleson County Judge Mike Sutherland. But Bernard didn’t want any credit for what he did. Being involved is just part of who he was. “Everything that has happened has been good and I don’t want to take too much credit for that because I’m just part of the cog. You know that cog on the wheel that made it happen,” said Rychlik this past fall.” The mayor was also a master of the spoken word. He always knew what to say and how to say it, even in the end. “When you get ready to leave this earth, the only things you take with you are those you gave away. So I hope I gave away,” said Rychlik. Editor’s Note: The preceding news story appears at www.kbtx.com. —SPJST—
