District Two Youth Sweep State Royalty Crowns Approximately 250 SPJST youth

from across Texas met at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 7 to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). The 2010 competition involved participants ages six to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as construction, foods, handicraft, photography, sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is always a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were each given a white sheet of paper and an assortment of art supplies to display SPJST. District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members. SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members. Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualify to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Taylor, Arlington, Hawley, Houston, Blessing, and Floresville. The grand finale of the 2010 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2010-2011 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent

VӖSTNÍK

No Vestnik Next Week

No Vestnik will be published next week - August 25. The next

Vestnik will be dated September 1. SPJST publishes 50 Vestniks each year, and next week is one of the non-publishing weeks. Since we have no Vestnik next week, this week provides time for us to catch up on projects that have been put on the back burner for months. We hope to be out of the Vestnik office for a few days so if you call the Home Office and don’t get Katherine or me, feel free to email me at melaniez@vvm.com or call me (254) 534-0807. And, that goes for anytime you cannot reach us at the Home Office! Jerry Celebrates 50 Years The Home Office welcomed more than 200 people who visited and celebrated with SPJST Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas on August 6. The occasion recognized and honored Brother Jerry for his 50 years of service to SPJST. See pictures and a summary in the September 1 Vestnik. Photos from the celebration are online at www.spjst.org. We wish Jerry many more years with SPJST.

State YAD Congratulations Congratulations to each and every youth club member who participated in this year’s State Youth Achievement Day. Whether you took home a medal, trophy, plaque, or not — you are a winner because you were there, and you were participating. That is what counts. 2009 State King Jackson and Queen Grace crowned the 2010

State Royalty. And, what a proud moment for District Two! Thank goodness DYC Patsy Koslovsky had leaders, parents, and friends around to hold her up when the results were announced. Patsy screamed, cried, danced, and celebrated when both District Two King Samuel Vanicek and District Two Queen Jacqueline Klaus were selected as State King and State Queen. Patsy, who has served as DYC since 1989, stated that it has always been her dream to have her queen selected as State Queen. Well, her dream — and then some — came true! Best wishes to King Samuel, Queen Jacqueline, Duke Ty, and Duchess Chandee as they begin their reign. Their first official appearance is at the Westfest parade on September 4. Complete State YAD results will be published in the SPJST Youth Spectacular on October 6. Results and photos are also online at www.spjst.org. Are You the Next State Youth Director? State Youth Director John Hoelscher announced at State YAD that he will step down on September 30 to continue as camp director at Cooper Farm. See the State Youth Director job description on page 3.

Next Vestnik—September 1 In addition to Jerry Mikulas’ celebration article and photos, the September 1 Vestnik will include SPJST ENC donation photos of SPJST Supreme Lodge’s $60,000 donation and Lodge 142, Houston’s cabin donation.

Lodge 9, Snook: youth to sell kolaches, noodles August 21

Donnie Hejl called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Sydney Faust, Hannah and Hayden Kovar, and Zachary Shelfer led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a moment of silence for Bernard Rychlik. Ann Schoeneman read the minutes of the last meeting, and they stood approved as read. Bonnie Walker gave the FAC report. David Kovar gave the hall manager’s report. Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer’s report. Marie Shelfer gave the youth club report. There were 42 youth and 19 adults present. Mrs. Lydia Faust talked to the youth about participating in the Kolache Bake Show, which will be held during Kolache Fest. The youth will present their program for Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 12 at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, August 21, youth will make kolaches and noodles to sell on Sunday, August 22 during the Snook VFD Bar-B-Que. Chester Jenke and wife Colleen, and Honorary District Two Directors Frank Klinkovsky and Willie Kohutek and wife Adeline. We were so happy to have Theresa Klecka from Lodge 24, Cyclone. Most of all, we were so surprised and happy that Historical Preservation Consultant Steph McDougal was able to be with us. The most important new business, of course, is the restoration project and to figure out the best way to finance it. Everyone attending the meeting is so supportive and willing to help us. This building has so many sweet memories from the past, and everyone is interested in accomplishing this preservation. Steph McDougal advised us to try to get some fundraisers going and ask that every member contribute - even if it is only one dollar - to show local interest in what we wish to accomplish. Steph said that really helps in seeking grants. She seemed real optimistic about the grants that she has applied for. We appreciate so very much all Steph is doing for us. We plan to start selling paver stones very soon, as well as have other fundraisers. SL President Brian Vanicek spoke to us and is very interested in our restoration plans. He stated they will join us in some fundraisers to help us accomplish our goal. Director Wuensche spoke to us and explained what bad shape Lodge 48, Beyersville hall was in, how the public supported its fundraisers, and what improvements have been made in a few years time. Frank Klinkovsky presented President Williams with a $1,000 check from District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt and wife Dorothy. This gift will be matched by Dorothy’s employer, EOG Resources. We certainly appreciate this. It will be a great boost to our Restoration Account. We were entertained with some beautiful accordion music provided by Regina Peevey. This was enjoyed so much by all. We appreciate her doing this for us. She is a most talented person in so many ways. She is certainly an asset to our community. Jim Wallace made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Scott Brandon. Motion carried. Door prizes were awarded followed by a delicious meal. The next meeting will be on September 13. Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik Secretary —SPJST—

SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby encourages lodges and youth clubs to assist with Paws Across Texas — a benefit to help pets and animals across Texas. SPJST lodges and youth clubs can help support animal shelters and veterinarian offices by soliciting food and money donations from the public and businesses in your community. Then, choose a shelter to benefit hungry and misfortunate animals. Through December 2010, let’s see just how much food and money we can collect as a fraternal organization. Each lodge/youth club is asked to keep a count on how many pounds of food and how much money it collects. Turn these numbers in to your district fraternal activities coordinator (FAC) who will notify the State FAC. The State FAC will tally a grand total at the end

of the year. Let’s show the world how SPJST and its lodges and youth clubs can make a difference in our great state of Texas. Thanks for your support of this project. Fraternally, Will Locke, President —SPJST—

Lodge 204 Stephenville members visit observatory

There were 13 members present at the Turner Observatory for the star party—seven were children, and everyone enjoyed the presentation by the president of Central Texas Astronomical Society. We enjoyed seeing some of the stars and learning more about the world we live in, and we got to see the telescope working. The children got to push the buttons, watch the telescope move, and hunt for the stars. This was a new experience for them, and maybe we can do this again sometime. There was a short meeting, and we voted to have the next meeting at Koffee Kup Restaurant on Sunday, September 19 at 4 p.m. We will plan the next events for the lodge and the rest of the year. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to August celebrants Martha Boenisch, Rose Cuba, Betty Krenek, and Pat McWilliams. May you all have many more!

Congratulations to Wayne Orange, right, of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. He was honored by the National Fraternal Congress of America as a Fraternal MVP for the week of May 3, 2010. Presenting his certificate is Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek.

Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported on receiving a thank you note from Rosie Steinman for the get well card. Rosie contributed $5 for which Willie Mae purchased cards. Also reported was a thank you note from Tracy Horn for the card which she enjoyed. Both Rosie and Tracy were at the meeting, and both said that they are feeling much better. It was also noted that Rosie arrived on time this month. Willie Mae further reported Annie Whitsell sends her greetings; Harold Balvin’s son now lives with him; Virgie Valentine still is hurting from shingles; Monalee Hattendorf was present at the meeting, and all were so glad to have her back; and Gerry Kortokrax is

not doing well. Let’s keep all our members who are not feeling good in our prayers. Alene Kercho was missed, and it was reported that her husband Al had surgery. We hope that he is doing well. Anna Johnson was also missed. She said that it was just too hot to get out. Betty Krenek was wearing a bandage on her arm, and we hope all will be better now. Our former member Frances Matthews fell recently and is currently in rehab. I hear that she will be going back to the Wellington soon. Reporter Libbie Vrla reported on visiting with Melba Brown, sister of Merel Kovar, and learned that Merel is back home at her assisted living apartment and doing well. She also reported on visiting with Betty Landsfeld who has been suffering with a bad knee to learn that she had her MRI and was supposed to see the doctor on Thursday. Since then, I’ve learned that Betty has a fractured knee, is now on a walker, taking antibiotics, and is to see the doctor in six weeks. Both Merel and Betty have been missed. Libbie further stated that one of the baseball nuns, Sister Maggie is not well and is returning to the Mother House in San Antonio to live. Sister Frances will stay on here in Fort Worth and continue to be affiliated with St. Andrew’s Church. Sister Maggie and Sister Frances were with St. Joseph’s Hospital before it closed and received permission to continue living in Fort Worth. They have been a great help to St. Andrew’s Church. and Sister Frances were always given a pass from an anonymous donor to see all home Rangers baseball games, and the television camera always sought them out. If you are a Rangers baseball fan, I’m sure that you’ve seen them on television. Our prayers go out to Sister Maggie. Libbie stated that since everyone knows Father Gerald, who used to be at St. Thomas Church and now is at St. Andrews, he is suffering from a leg problem and was using a cane Sunday at mass. Mary Ann reported on the wonderful time that everyone had at The Wellington where Lydia Alholm lives. Joe Kozel has been scheduled to play again for its OctoberFest, and the singers will again make a special appearance. The President stated that any recommendations to the guidelines need to be made and voted on in September. She asked everyone to think about increasing our donation to St. Thomas Church for using their facilities for the meetings; increasing the donation to families on the death of a member or their spouse; and, to increasing the annual dues. Any other suggestions should be brought before the membership at the next meeting. We had six door prizes, and I only got the following names as donors — Elsie Anders, Paula Arsenault, Elizabeth Creamer, and Mary Ann Kozel. I am sorry that I didn’t get all the names. Lucky winners were Lydia Alholm, Paula Arsenault, Willie Mae Becan, Marie Keller, Shirley Martin, and Jo Ann Wilcox. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Helen Skrasek and Lois Smith. Congratulations to all of the winners. Sharron Connelly was asked to speak on her recent trip to France to visit her former teacher/friend. Sharron reported on a great 20 days in France, visited all of west France and Normandy Beach, traveled on many toll roads, and spoke on the simple lifestyle. She especially enjoyed all the visits to homes of friends, and she learned lots of special recipes. One recipe that she told me about was soup being made from radish tops, onion, garlic, potatoes, and beef bullion. She said the soup was great, and she reported on having a great time. Mary Ann Kozel brought the quilt that she and another SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth member had made for the 100th anniversary of Lodge 92. She was selling tickets. The special anniversary celebration day will be on September 18. I have tickets, and I al-

ways like to think that just maybe I’ll be a winner! Hostesses for September will be Darlene Tompkins, Shirley Martin, and Mary Schneider. With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned. Mary Ann then led us in the blessing. A great luncheon was enjoyed with so many wonderful dishes, but the plates are not large enough to take a taste of everything. Anyway, we manage, and there is always a recipe or two to exchange. The luncheon was certainly enjoyed. Following, games were played, and as Merel Kovar always wrote in her minutes, a good time was had by all.

News It was nice to meet and get in a little visit with Marilyn Llewellyn, our new member. Her son is the new school principal at St. Andrew’s School. I’m sure everyone knows by now that I am a proud member of St. Andrew’s Church in southwest Fort Worth. Paula Arsenault will be missed for the next two months as she will be visiting with family in Germany. I am sure that she will have some stories to share with us. Willie Mae Becan really enjoyed seeing her name in the Ennis Sewing Circle report in the Věstník. Willie Mae had given me a couple of sacks of material she thought the Circle could use, and sister Lil Kosarek, our quilt designer, was especially pleased to get them. I’m sure one of Willie Mae’s pieces of material will be used as the backing of the next quilt. Thanks again, Willie Mae. I guess everyone knows that the reporter for the Ennis Sewing Circle is my younger sister, Georgie Morales. Congratulations go out to Bill Moncrief, Anna Marie’s husband, who will celebrate his 70th birthday at their home in Gunnison, Colorado, with a barbecue and live band. I’m sure it will be a festive celebration with lots of guests coming in, then later in the week, Anna Marie and Bill will celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary. Congratulations, Anna Marie and Bill! After the meeting, I stopped in at the assisted living facility where Merel Kovar resides for a little visit. She was in the reception area visiting with a couple of ladies, and she got so excited to see me. She got up to give me a hug which I thought was so special. She said for me to tell her friends and anyone else that she knows that she sends them a big hello. She looked great, and we had such a nice visit. Historian

Rose Ann Spann has been telling me that she didn’t have a photo of Merel since she took over this position so I took one for her. Helen Skrasek, Debbie Skrasek, and I enjoyed being guests of Lydia Alholm’s at a luncheon at Oscar’s last Friday. We had such a good visit and fun time. Then, I went over to Helen’s to see her apartment, and we continued our visit. It was certainly a fun day. Thanks, Lydia! While at Helen’s, she was gathering jars, sugar, and canning ingredients for her sister Adele to take back this weekend while they are in Fort Worth for a birthday party. Helen plans to go by Amtrak to Waco and can pears from Adele and Harold Strand’s orchard. Tracy Horn is looking forward to tomorrow, August 10, when her twin great-granddaughters will be born. I will have more on the twins next month. Tracy is also saddened that her oldest grandson is moving to Boston, Massachusetts. He is the one who lived in Germany for a while, and I recall writing about him. I told Tracy that

Scenes from Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club’s Summer Activities

Dear Vestnik Readers, As summer comes to a close, what a wonderful summer it’s been if you were involved in SPJST. In July, members from Lodge 9, Snook attended a Brazos Valley Bombers game. We had a great time of fellowship and enjoyed the games and autographs after the game. Camp was a big hit this year with the new pool, cabins, and once again, going to the lake for some

tubing. I can’t wait for next summer. We also had District One and State Youth Achievement Days. Congratulations to Taylor Allen who was crowned District One Queen and to Madelyn Rodriguez, her duchess. They represented us well at State YAD in which Taylor was selected first runner-up. Great job, Taylor! District One also went on a day trip to Schlitterbahn. We had a great time seeing friends again from

Dear Vestnik Readers, We were practicing for beseda one night before State YAD, and we had a couple of fill-in dancers. Can you guess who they are? Chris Beasley and Holly Suehs Narro were both youth club members, and now their children are in the youth club and dance beseda. It was fun to have them a part of the circles. Weston Beasley was also dancing at the same time, and he was

• Drop the pop. Is soda pop really that bad? “Yup. Affirmative. Absolutely,” says board-certified nutritionist and author Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS. Loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, soda pop offers a lot of calories and no nutritional value. Stick with the basics — 100 percent juice,

• Go nuts! For snacks, skip the potato chips and pack nuts instead (allergies aside, of course). Walnuts are high in Omega-3 and antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin B6. • Focus on fitness. Experts aren’t exactly sure how exercise fuels learning, but they know that it does. According

Backpack safety goes beyond back pain

(MS) When it comes to backpack safety, most people tend to think about injuries caused by a heavy backpack or one worn improperly. However, there are other dangers associated with backpacks and caution should be used.

in bus aisles can be a tripping hazard. Students also can be injured if a heavy pack falls on them. Children tucking backpacks into lockers or classroom cubbies may find that they slide out and hit another classmate. Backpacks change the way individuals walk. Because the person is carrying around extra weight, he or she may lose balance or trip and fall, especially when going down steps. To avoid these secondary hazards from backpacks, consider these tips. • Don’t overload a backpack. Carry only what is necessary. If too many books are the issue, parents should talk to the school administrators and teachers to reach a happy medium regarding textbook usage.

Pictured are, left to right, second runner-up King Grant Dusek and Duke Weston Beasley, both of Lodge 17, New Tabor; first runner-up King Lane Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton and Duke Jordan Woodall of Lodge 185, New Braunfels; State Duke Ty Stock and State King Samuel Vanicek, both of Lodge 24, Cyclone; State Queen Jacqueline Klaus and State Duchess Chandee Bachmeyer, both of Lodge 29, Taylor; first runner-up Queen Taylor Allen and Duchess Madelyn Rodriguez, both of Lodge 9, Snook; and second runner-up Queen Allison Fucik of Lodge 30, Taiton and Duchess Myranda Zielonka of Lodge 148, El Maton.

Backpacks come in all shapes and sizes and can be a handy tool for students or adults. When worn correctly, with weight evenly distrubuted across the back and shoulders, backpacks can be safer and more effective than using a purse or briefcase. But many people wear overly loaded backpacks slung over one shoulder, which can pose problems with posture and lead to back issues. In addition to the physical strain

backpacks can cause, they can be a danger in other ways. Many people fail to recognize how much space a backpack can take up. Entering the tight quarters of a school bus or commuting on a train or bus means a bulky backpack can knock into other people. If that backpack is full of heavy, cumbersome books or even a laptop computer, an inadvertent bump by the pack can cause injuries. Also, backpacks taken off and placed

• When on the bus, safely store the backpack on a lap or under the seat. Be sure straps or the pack itself is not extending into the aisle.

• Avoid rolling backpacks, which can be difficult to roll. Some schools ban these styles because of tripping hazards. • Recognize how much space the backpack takes up when worn. Be conscious of others when turning around or entering a confined space. • Hold on to stair rails and do not run with a heavy backpack to help avoid slips and falls.

• Choose a lightweight backpack. Canvas backpacks are generally lighter in weight than leather backpacks. Do not add extra weight unnecessarily.

Phrasebook

Czech is a Slavic language, closely related to Slovak and Polish. Spoken by over 10 million people as a first language and at least six million who use it as a second language (mainly in Slovakia), Czech is one of two official and defacto languages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words. The only tricky sound to watch for in Czech is this ‘ř’ letter. It’s like putting a trilled ‘r’ and ‘su’ in “pleasure” together to make up a ‘rrrzh’ sound. The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words. Source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Czech_phrasebook
