Happy Labor Day!
Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement, a yearly celebration
of the American worker, and a national tribute to the laborer’s contribution to the social and economic achievements of the United States. There is some uncertainty about the origins of Labor Day. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first to suggest a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Other research suggests that machinist Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey, proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
FINANCIAL SECRETARY JERRY MIKULAS Office: (254) 773-1575 email: jerrymik@spjst.com
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. In l884, the first Monday in September was selected as the official holiday. The first governmental recognition of Labor Day came through municipal ordinances passed in 1885 and 1886. The State of Oregon passed the first law recognizing the Labor Day holiday on February 21, 1887. Four more states—Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York— followed suit that same year. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in all the states, the District of Columbia, and all United States territories.

Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Audit Committee Report July Supreme Lodge Meeting
9
1. Why are we paying for applications written instead of applications issued? This is promoting written instead of issued, and this is not what we want. 2. We need a report and documentation as to why policies are being surrendered. This seems to be an issue, and we would like to know the reasons for the surrenders. Also, we want to know that everything was done to save the certificate. 3. How are the incentive awards for Home Office employees determined? Does everyone get them? 4. Please explain the employee salary advance. 5. Why are directors paid in the middle of the month instead of at the end of the month? 6. During this year, we spent just over $9,000 for the incentive awards banquets. How does this compare to previous statewide banquets which we have had in the past. This is for meals and rentals with no mileage being paid. 7. Under office maintenance, what is bought at Sam’s Club for this category? 8. We asked the HR person to come in and talked to her about sick leave and vacation information. We were unable to obtain this information because it was incomplete. It was indicated that some individuals had not turned in the necessary information and therefore it would not be beneficial. It is important that all employees and elected officials provide this information so that accurate records can be kept. All supervisors should see to it that their employees do the same. Other items of concern were discussed, especially the employee handbook which needs to be revised and a salary scale needs to be implemented. It is to go along with job responsibility exclusive longevity. 9. We also discussed the positive benefits of what has been accomplished over the last year and a half through the HR Department. It was noted that we have had large savings in health insurance premiums, increased 401k benefits, and competitive bidding in many areas which has saved us considerable money with the ability to track where our coverage is coming from. (Liability insurance, etc.) 10. There was no entry for Vice President McBride for office supplies on the ledger. However, it was in Jerry’s report for the directors. 11. We recommend that competitive bids be received for actuarial services and that these services are split between product development and statutory reporting. 12. A question was asked if our volume of business was large enough to share underwriting with another fraternal. 13. We need to continue to place an emphasis on accuracy because there were some receipts which did not match with the voucher amounts. 14. There needs to be a total for all legal expenses in addition to the subtotal for each department on the ledger. A grand total for all related subcategories would be great. We commend you for the neatness of your filing system. It is so much easier to follow. Our expenses have been reduced somewhat but continue to strive for streamlining more. Don’t relax yet.
Each of the items were responded to by the applicable officer and in some cases, information will need to be gathered.
Director Pflughaupt recommended and moved that the audit report be presented in the early part of the meeting instead of at the end to act on some of the comments without delaying until the next Supreme Lodge meeting. More Month Than Money By James L. Lee, III, CPA
Running out of money before running out of month is a common problem not restricted to working class people. Our national savings rate reveals that, on the whole, Americans are pretty dismal savers. Having a hefty income, more often than not, appears to mean hefty ex- James L. Lee, III penses as well. For quite some time now, we have been spending as much or more than we earn, and consumer debt levels are at or near all time highs. Our political leaders seem to want us to both spend more to stimulate the economy and save more to fund the deficit. A neat trick, if our incomes don’t go up, and we’re already up to our necks in debt. I, for one, am a strong advocate of increased savings. Our personal balance sheets need the strong dose of equity corporate America is currently giving itself. Since we can’t sell shares in ourselves, let’s all resolve to save more. Saving just $25 per month, invested at 5 percent yields over $20,800 in 30 years. Anybody born after 1973 has at least 30 years before they turn 65. How do we help ourselves to increase our rate of savings? First, establish a long-term goal. A well established, written goal is the foundation of all financial planning. Increased savings may appear to come at the expense of one’s current lifestyle, so a goal that’s worth working for is essential if you want to have any hope of success. The next rule is pay yourself first. When you sit down to pay the monthly bills, you should write the first check in the form of an invest-
ment toward a long-term goal. The use of automatic debits to the checking account and/or payroll deductions is a marvelous way to begin this program. It will also illustrate the amazing powers of compound interest and dollar-cost averaging over time. Third, avoid the over-use of consumer debt, even if it means cutting up a credit card or two. Go ahead, you’ll probably feel better and your wallet will close easier. Almost anyone with a credit card can get a 6 percent to 19 percent guaranteed return on their investment just by paying off credit card debt. As a society, we need to learn that the offer of a pre-approved credit card with a $5,000 limit does not translate into a $5,000 increase in lifestyle. You’ll notice an absence of budgeting in these suggestions. It’s not that budgeting is a bad idea, in fact it’s a pretty good one for some people. However, most seem to lack the discipline it takes to really make a budget work. It’s far too easy to rationalize a budget-busting expenditure, as politicians in Washington are constantly proving. Most people spend to the level of their income. Their lifestyles automatically adjust upward with every increase in salary. By paying themselves first and avoiding the credit card temptation, their lifestyles will miraculously adjust to their new level of income. After a few months, they won’t even miss the money they’ve begun to save. This material was prepared by Raymond James for use by James L. Lee, III, CPA, Wealth Advisor of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Member FINRA/SIPC. —SPJST—

From the President’s Department
State Fraternal Activities Coordinator: September Updates
Grandparents Day is September 12 Sunday, September 12 is Grandparents Day. This is a day to remember those who are special in our daily lives. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this wonderful day of celebration. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. (The above paragraph reprinted with permission from National Grandparents Council at www.grandparentsday.com.) Fall Meetings Start in September District fall fun days will begin in September. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. All business should have been taken care of at the spring meeting. Only emergency issues should be brought up and discussed. What a great time to meet fellow members in your district, visit with them, and have a fun day.

Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage Month, good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 10. That is Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. SPJST Joins with Raymond James to Offer Financial Planning Workshops It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are, everyone stands to benefit when they are able to achieve a better understanding of financial planning. It’s a process that consists of working from where you are now and identifying what you have to do in order to reach your goals. In an effort help you facilitate your financial planning objectives, SPJST members, their families, and friends will be able to participate in a series of informative workshops to be presented throughout the state in the coming months. Educational programs will address topics ranging from Estate Planning and Financing College to Financial Planning Basics, Social Security, and Retirement Income Planning. Articles will also be appearing in the Vestnik under the heading of “SPJST Financial University.” The educational series is being presented through the Raymond James Financial Services Professional Partners Program and will be facilitated by James Lee, III, CPA. Mr. Lee has more 35 years of financial and investment experience in the financial services industry, including 20 years as a bank Chief Financial and Investment Officer and seven years as a Wealth Advisor with Raymond James Financial Services, an internationally recognized leader in the investment industry. Mr. Lee is also an SPJST member and president of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. The SPJST Supreme Lodge made the decision to partner with Mr. Lee at its July meeting. “Having access to knowledgeable financial information can make a positive difference in the lives of our members,” says SPJST President Brian Vanicek. “The American financial system is emerging from some incredibly trying times. It’s been a challenge for everyone — from banks and businesses to individuals and families affected by the downturn.” “Providing these educational workshops is one thing that the SPJST can do to help its members and prospective members plan for future. We want to communicate information that will help individuals and families strengthen their financial stature as well as help them achieve their financial objectives,” says President Vanicek. “That includes needs planning and conveying information about SPJST life insurance and annuities. We want this program to complement and enhance the efforts of our SPJST sales representatives.”

A listing of seminar locations and topics will be posted in the Vestnik as they become available. “Reaching into the community for the purpose of doing good is in line with achieving our fraternal ideals. If we are able to help someone plan ahead for a better future, it will eventually circle back to us,” says President Vanicek.

Jerry Mikulas Celebrates 50 Years of SPJST Service
Words like ‘admiration,’ ‘respect,’ and ‘dedication’ were overheard time and time again as many SPJST members and friends gathered at the Home Office on Friday afternoon, August 6, 2010, to honor Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas for 50 years of service to SPJST. The reception included an invocation and words of inspiration from Pastor Larry Zabcik of Temple Brethren Church, a proclamation from City of Temple Mayor William A. “Bill” Jones, III, and a special song performed by Jerry Haisler. Brother Mikulas began his employment at SPJST in 1960 after completing his associate of arts degree at Temple Junior College. “I started my employment with SPJST under the direction of Raymond A Urbanovsky,” Jerry says. “Mr. Urbanovsky was elected Secretary in the 1960 Convention, and Mr. Ben Zabcik assumed his duties as Financial Secretary.” Jerry worked for Mr. Zabcik until June 1976 when Jerry was elected Financial Secretary at the convention held in Waco. He continues to serve in the position. Throughout these many years, Brother Mikulas has skillfully navi-

gated SPJST’s accounting and bookkeeping sections through a maze of regulatory and technical changes and innovations. “I guess one of the largest tasks I undertook was converting all the records to a computer system,” Jerry recalls. “This project was completed in 1984 and has been in existence

since. All of the daily accounting functions were also converted.” During Jerry’s tenure, SPJST’s assets increased significantly — from $11 million in 1960 to more than $196 million today. During this same time period, total life insurance in force increased from $33 million to $919 mil-
lion today. Brother Mikulas also ensures that all financial statements are always submitted to the Texas Department of Insurance on a timely basis. “We just completed a five year audit with the Texas Department of Insurance, and I am proud to say that no discrepancies of any magnitude were reported,” he proclaims. Jerry’s leadership is admired. His inspiration is being passed to his employees as some of them have been employed with SPJST for more than 40 years. “I have always emphasized to my staff to treat the certificate holder with respect and dignity,” he says. “I have to compliment my staff for this.” Jerry and his wife Betty, who celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in February, have three children and eight grandchildren. Jerry enjoyed the reception with family members and many friends. “I wish to thank the entire membership and also all past and present officers and employees for their loyal support throughout my 50 years.” Congratulations, Brother Mikulas, and thank you for your service! —SPJST—

Thank You, Jerry, for Fifty Years
Jerry is what we call him by name His skills in accounting is his most claim.
Most of us wish for a secure job and family life Jerry scored big and acquires both with little or no strife.
He has held this position as SPJST Financial Secretary in a second home And seen many a change within the “fifty” year dome.

So we thank him for his fraternal devotion for he is the best.
We are celebrating him loudly thanking him for all he has done And forever his legacy in these halls will be hung. For “Fifty” years of one’s life is more that some can give And SPJST has been blessed with Jerry for these many years.
— Dorothy Pflughaupt Lodge 88, Houston August 6, 2010
From hand entered ledgers that caused headaches and frustration To computers and spreadsheets that could handle any denomination.
Jerry has a way of evaluating things though numbers and sight With his heart and desire of wanting to do what is right.
In detail and unconditional memories of the past he has kept sound In his mind that he trained well to keep records clear and profound.
Maybe not all decision and sighting are agreeable by all Let’s face it, none of us can successfully answer that call. Fraternalism is his passion, as most will agree His enthusiasm can be infectious to the maximum degree.
His lifelong collection of Coca Cola stands tall Walk into his office and see his collection from wall to wall.
Family is number one, lodge number two in priority setting Everything else seats after these two except maybe casual chatting. Keeping an ear to members concerns and keeping numbers on track He has successfully kept note and kept guard of the SPJST’s back.
With continued vote of encouragement given by peers He was accepted and settled in for these “Fifty” consecutive years. He charged forward holding his head high and passed the test
Jerry Haisler, with wife Helen holding the microphone, performs “50 Years Ago” for Jerry Mikulas.
1. Fifty years ago and Jerry’s still the same, Coming to work each day to that place with a funny name, As my mind raced back in time, We prayed, oh, Lord, don’t let him go, You know it’s been . . . fifty years or so. 2. He’s got lots of friends who think the world of him, He retired, but then he had to make amends, There to lend a hand . . . on him you can depend, We can’t forget this guy from fifty years or so.
Chorus: Fifty years ago and we still feel the same, Why did he . . . mention that retirement thing? We’re as broken up inside, as if it’s been a week or so, It takes a mighty strong man, doing work in SPJST land, He can’t shake this thing, of 50 years or so. . . . . . and will it be another 50 years or more? Congratulations! From Jerry and Helen Haisler August 6, 2010 —SPJST—

Lodge 15 Buckholts member recalls 50th anniversary
Dear Members, How many of you remember when SPJST was celebrating its 50th anniversary? Not many, but I am one of the few who do. Compared to today, SPJST was in its infancy. The biggest difference between now and then was that everything was still conducted in Czech. I hate to say it, but truth is, that at the time, benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood were its least observed virtues. The whole organization was rife with controversy of every
description. Before one argument was settled, another took its place. To drop a celebration into such a miss, a firestorm is all you could expect. Taylor just happened to be the place where the celebratory convention was held. In hindsight, I’m sure they’d rather it was held somewhere else. Mind you, this was before motels. The few there were, were called tourist courts. Therefore, it fell on the host lodge to furnish both food and lodging. For lodging, the host members had to open their homes while the lodge catered the food. One of the delegates was Frank Machart of Calliham, who before moving there, was our beloved neighbor. No wonder then, that Mr. Machart never missing an opportunity to visit,
opted to commute to Taylor while staying with my parents, John and Annie Kuzel. Every evening then while mother had supper ready, Mr. Machart gave us a blow-by-blow account of the day’s happening. It was as good as being there—maybe even better. To list what all was argued then is hopefully now forgotten—partly anyway. I do remember that one complaint was about the food as to quality and price. After the convention closed on a bitter note, it later led a disgruntled delegate to write in the Vestnik that at that convention everything was 50 years old including the steers that were barbecued. After considering all this, wouldn’t you say that we’re having the “good old days” in reverse? Fraternally yours, Hilda Kuzel Burtis —SPJST—

Prachyl, Eleanora Pelzel, and myself arrived at 8 a.m. We arranged tables and chairs and stretched the Christmas quilt. Before we knew it, Dorothy J., Martha, Irene, Pat, and Bessie were there quilting. Thank you, everyone, for coming early to quilt. By lunch time, we had 16 members and three guests — Autum Hambrick, Julius, and Jerry. President Dorothy led us in prayer, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. As always, we had many wonderful dishes. Thank you, everyone. After lunch, the quilters returned to quilting. President Dorothy called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Charlie Dlabaj and Winnie Whitfill, both related to several members. Dorothy J. read the minutes of the June meeting, and Lil gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced August birthday celebrants Kay Lynn Kovar, Geraldine Valek, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Anne Zvolanek, and France Vinkler. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Geraldine and Dorothy J. who were present. Cards were signed for Anne and Frances, our shut-in members. discussed, and a motion was made by Ann that we do the same as last year. It was seconded by Lil. Motion passed. Bertha Podhrasky introduced her special guest great-granddaughter Autum Hambrick. Autum lives in Ennis and will be attending fourth grade in the new school Jack Lummus Intermediate. We wish her a very good year. I want to thank Bertha for the box of delicious pears that she brought for everyone from her pear tree. President Dorothy told a funny story that she read in The Dallas Morning News and enjoyed by all. President Dorothy also thanked the ladies who set up, quilted, and put up everything. She announced the next meeting will be September 9. Margaret Martinek brought the door prize which was won by Irene Prachyl. Little gifts which are always fun were handed out by Ann. I must thank Jerry Zmolek for taking out the trash and for him and Julius helping put all the table and chairs back in order. I have to brag. I got to take home a few left over pickled okra made by Geraldine Valek. They are so good. I want to mention that I got to look at the Czechs in Uniform books, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading and looking at every page. It took me a whole week, but it was worth it. I didn’t know that Jerry Zmolek and Julius Podhrasky had flown planes. Their stories were great. I even read one of Bertha Podhrasky’s letters that she wrote to the Vestnik back when she was still Bertha Janicek. If you get a chance, take the time to look and read about all our heroes. You won’t be sorry. Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek enjoyed a trip to Penelope, Texas, on August 1 for mass, dinner, and dance. Czech and Then Some played, and they enjoyed the day. Congratulations to Alison Pelzel granddaughter of Eleanora Pelzel. Alison graduated from North Texas on August 14, and they all enjoyed a party in her honor. This has been a hot and fast summer. School is starting again, and this is the last year for granddaughter Calleigh. Guess you will probably be glad, but I still have grandson Tanner. It was good to see everyone. Take care and remember September 9, we will quilt, have door prize, little gift exchange, and covered dish lunch. See you! Georgie Morales Reporter —SPJST—

State Youth Director: September updates
Dear Youth Leaders, What a summer we had! Great activities and great participation! I’m happy that everything worked out so well. Thanks to everyone around the state who helped with the summer camps. Providing our kids with a meaningful camping experience isn’t just fun for the present. It’s all about learning life lessons and building relationships that can last a lifetime. Even though the amount of time that we spend at camp is limited, it can have a great impact on those who attend. I am especially pleased that all of our groups were able to attend their district camps this year at the SPJST Education and Nature Center. Thanks, too, to everyone who helped with State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on August 7 at the Temple Mayborn Center. Without your assistance there would have been no YAD. Now the process starts all over again . . . Please know that I will be stepping down from my position as State Youth Director at the end of September in order to fulfill my new role as Executive Director for the SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. I want all of you to know that I have enjoyed working with you over the years and will continue to be a big supporter of the SPJST youth program in my new role with the SPJST ENC. I know the youth program will be in good hands and will continue to thrive. Summer Vestnik Projects, First Quarter Reports Due Sept. 15 Your June, July and August Vestnik projects are due September 15. Quarterly reports and youth club rosters are also due September 15. Lodge 25, Ennis Youth: Summer Filled with Excitement
Dear Vestnik Readers, I took lifeguard training this summer at Sokol. It was a lot of fun. We got to jump off the lifeguard stand and save people. We also had to do a little challenge. We had to jump in the pool with our jeans, tee-shirt, and sneakers on. After that, we had to take off our sneakers and tee-shirt, and then take our pants off and made them into a float. Of course, I had my swimming suit on underneath. I went to Vacation Bible School this summer. We did arts and crafts, singing, games, tour of the church, Faith room, and snacks. To be trust with you, I didn't like the Faith room too much. I went to SPJST camp at ENC at Cooper Farm with District Five. I had a lot of fun! I could tell you all the fun things we did, but it would be too
long. One thing I didn’t like about camp was that it was too short, and our bus driver had to take several pit stops. For my birthday, I got a big present. It was a vacation! We went to Mount Ida, Arkansas. It was really pretty. We stayed at a nice hotel. We jumped into 50-degree water at Charleston Creek. There was a pier, and you jump off of it without knowing how cold it was. When you jump in, you end up screaming, “it’s so cold!” But I kept on jumping in! They also had a waterfall, and Daddy walked on top of it . . . it was funny what happened after that! Later, on our trip, we went on a boat ride. Since it was my birthday, I got to ride on my little perch. When we were going home, we saw a chicken truck. It was filled with live chickens. It stunk bad!

The SPJST youth club went to Hawaiian Falls for out summer activity. There were many rides. They had a new ride called “the torpedo.” You get in a small cage. Inside the cage, you hear 3-2-1. Then, the floor from under you drops out! Then, you become a human torpedo. The tipikia tower had many slides including a freefall that I went on more than five times. After vacation, lucky me had a birthday party. I invited a few friends over and to my surprise one of them spent the night with me! Uncle Michael came over, and we all jumped in the pool to play with him. My birthday cake had horsies on it. Your way too cool friend, April Dvorak, age 10 —SPJST—

At our last meeting, we completed our Vestnik projects, went over YAD, and played with all the other kids. The weekend of July 23 to 25, our youth club held a tamale fundraiser! We sold 112 dozen tamales and went to work at my house making them. It was fun! Vanessa helped make the masa, and Chris, Ciera, Colton, and I helped spread the masa. Our parents helped us the most with this. A great big thanks go out to them for helping us! On July 24, we also had a slumber party at my house. We stayed up late swimming and watching movies. My favorite part was swimming and going to visit the horses down the road. We finished up the tamales on the 25th! Our fundraiser was a success. Thanks to everyone who purchased some

tamales and for supporting our youth club. On July 30 to August 1, our youth club went to camp. We had so much fun. I made a lot of new friends and can’t wait to go back next year. At camp, we got to sleep in really cool cabins on awesome bunk beds. We got to swim in the pool, play basketball under the pavilion, archery, high and low ropes course, and spend an afternoon at the lake where we swam and tubed. My favorite part of the lake was riding the tube with my mom, who fell off and made us all laugh . . . and the shaving cream fight. I also loved the high ropes course. At first, I did not like it at all, but with my mom’s help, she made me get back up and try again. A big thanks to Lisa for helping me get over my fear of falling. The best part is the zip lines. A must. To sum camp up for all our youth— had a blast, can’t wait until next year! The following weekend, we attended State YAD. We had a lot of fun there. We got to see all our friends that we made at camp again. Our youth went out to eat at CiCi’s and had crazy

fun on the horse there. My paper mache dragon won second place in handicraft, and my youth club won first place for our youth club poster. Go, Lodge 87! On August 12 to 15, our whole youth club attended the Corpus Christi getaway. We had so much fun. We played on the beach, swam in the ocean, played in the sand, and enjoyed more time with our newfound SPJST family. From our own family time to the ballroom activities, I had so much fun. I was sad to see the last day come but am looking forward to next year. Our next big thing planned is our monthly meeting, starting to build our float for the parade, and our charity project. Things are slowing down now, but Lodge 87 is still having a blast! Ryan Davidson, Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 25, Ennis Youth: Swimming, VBS, Camp, Vacation
Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to swimming lessons. I can do everything. I can swim backwards the width of the Sokol pool. I got a piece of candy after each day. I went to Vacation Bible School, and Momma was the teacher for my class. The best part was the games. I went to SPJST camp at ENC at Cooper Farm. My favorite thing at
camp was swimming. The thing that I didn’t like the most was going home, But, I was glad to see Daddy when we got back! I went to Arkansas for vacation. The motel had a swimming pool. I swam in it. We looked for crystals. The worst part of vacation was falling down the hill, and I skinned my knee! I got to swim in a creek, and it was

cold. Momma felt the water and hopped right out. SPJST youth went to Hawaiian Falls. I like going there. I rode all the rides and slides! Momma had her birthday. It was the worst birthday ever because we had to go to church! Love, Misty Dvorak, age 6 3/4 —SPJST—

Schůzi zahájil předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machánn a poděkoval

Zápis z minulé schůze by schválen s malými opravami. Náš pokladník Tony Pustějovský podal velmi pěknou finanční zprávu a byl by velmi rád, kdyby mohl přijmout další dáry a příspěvky do naší pokladny. Pište na adresu: Tony Pustějovský, P.O. Box 744313, Dallas, Tx. 75374-4313. Czech Heritage Museum to show The Pagan Queen
We are showing The Pagan Queen at the Czech Heritage Museum, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, on Thursday evening, September 2, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free of charge (although donations are welcome), and refreshments will be available. A controversial film about the end of the old pagan world in central Europe, The Pagan Queen is based on the Czech legend of Libuse, the Slavic queen of 8th century Bohemia. Gifted with supernatural powers, a visionary and a seer, this extraordinary woman was able to see the future and in a turbulent time of cultural change founded the modern city of Prague. Libuse ruled as a woman over the tribes of the region with her two beautiful sisters Kazi and Teta and an army of women under the command of her best friend, the Amazon Vlasta.

Mayfest set for November 20
When the peaceful community of farmers is under attack by raiders and split into different parties of power hungry landowners, Libuse is forced into marriage by her own people. Desperate, she elects her longtime lover, the charismatic ploughman Premysl, to become her husband and king. Soon Premysl takes over the new kingdom and rules with an iron fist, enslaving the formerly free farmers. But Libuse’s friend Vlasta, who is secretly in love with her, refuses to follow the new leader and with her maiden army declares war on the men of Bohemia. The film is based on the 18th and 19th century romantic German fairytales and plays by Johann Karl Musaeus, Clemens Brentano, and Franz Grillparzer who emphasize the supernatural elements of the story and combine that with psychology and philosophy. This approach caused a massive scandal in the Czech Republic during the theatrical run of the film. Submitted by, Sandi Wicker CHM Executive Director —SPJST—
