Officials represent SPJST at Annual Meeting in Chicago
SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Member Susan Skrabanek Named National Fraternalist of the Year By Brian Vanicek, FIC Supreme Lodge President
Last week, I had the opportunity and honor to be part of the SPJST delegation that traveled to Chicago to participate in the 124th National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) Annual Meeting. The 124year-old N F C A unites 69 not-forprofit frat e r n a l benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. The association represents nearly 9 million fraternalists in 32,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteerservice opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $363 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2009 alone, contributed almost $402 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 108 million hours for community-service projects.

SPJST delegates in attendance were District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick, District Two Director Bobby Wuensche, District Six Director/Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Mike Ahlstrom, and myself. Also attending were Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, who received the Marcia D.

This year’s NFCA Annual Meeting covered virtually every aspect of fraternal benefit society management and operations. It was a great opportunity to refresh our way of thinking about fraternal benefits and products. What a positive and invigorating fraternal experience! National Fraternal Alliance I was very much honored to receive the Marcia D. Heywood Me-
morial Fraternal Communications Award at the National Fraternal Congress of America annual meeting on Saturday, September 11 in Chicago. It was an amazing feeling representing SPJST and being recognized in front of many, many fraternal peers like KJZT, Order of the Sons of Hermann in Texas, Knights of Columbus, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Woodmen of the World, KJT, Catholic Life, and Modern Woodmen of America. Thanks, NFCA, for recognizing me, and thanks, SPJST, for the opportunity to attend the meeting. The meeting was enlightening, and I picked up some new ideas for SPJST’s communication area. And, delegates voted to change National Fraternal Congress of America to National Fraternal Alliance. That’s certainly got a great ring to it! See President Brian’s meeting summary that begins on page 1. Congratulations to Susan, 2010 NFCA Fraternalist of the Year, and to Brian who will serve as 20102011 NFCA State Fraternal Congress Section President.
Youth Spectacular to be Printed in Lieu of October 6 Vestnik Please make a note that in lieu of the October 6 Vestnik, the Youth Spectacular will be printed. This issue will feature SPJST’s youth members who participated in district camps and youth achievement days around the state this past summer. It will also highlight State YAD winners and include royalty speeches and the state merit essay along with many pictures.
Attention, Veterans! We want to honor you. Watch the Vestnik for details about a special Veterans Day Tribute to all veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces. This will be printed in the November 10, 2010, Vestnik. Veterans and current service members must be SPJST members.
Night Shift: Stay Alert and Safe Staying awake is a challenge for the roughly 8.6 million United States workers on the night shift—nurses, air traffic controllers, law-enforcement officers, Vestnik editors, and the like. According to The New York Times, recent research indicates that such approaches as light therapy, melatonin, and prescription medications aren’t as effective as a simple cup of coffee. In an article published in The Cochrane Library, researchers analyzed data from 13 earlier studies that compared the effects of caffeine with naps and placebos, and determined that caffeine was more successful at decreasing errors and improving performance in activities that involved attention, memory, and decision-making. But don’t down the coffee pot in one swig: A Harvard Medical School study found that caffeine is most effective when workers use it in small doses and spread them out over a long period of time . . . —SPJST—

Americans ask the following question: What happened to the money that I was going to save? One of the best ways to gain control of your money is by developing a written spending plan. James L. Lee, III A spending plan can help you to:
• See where your money goes. • Reduce unnecessary expenses. • Evaluate needs and wants. • Locate money in your budget for large expenses, emergencies and longterm goals.
Here’s how to begin building your financial framework:
• Discover where your money goes. For one month make notes of all expenditures. Get out last year’s checkbook register to determine what you paid for those items that are not predictable on a monthly basis (entertainment, hobbies, travel, etc.)
________________
(i.e. food, clothing, childcare, utilities, and transportation). Write down everything, even the popcorn you had at the movies. You’ll be surprised where those hard-earned dollars go.
• Prioritize your financial goals and determine how much you’ll need to save each month. Think long-term and short-term goals.
• Bring your goals in line with your income (i.e. new car, less expensive car, wait another year for a car). Putting off a purchase is called “delayed gratification.”
• Make the written plan realistic. Over a few months time you can get your spending on track and make progress toward your specific financial goals.

ciety. The morning session focused on board member duties and responsibilities and how to get the most out of reading and interpreting financial statements. The afternoon session focused on the important role that auditing procedures play in ensuring that a fraternal society is being managed in both a cost-effective and productive manner. Presenters included NFCA attorney Todd Martin and accounting and audit specialists Gary Strohm and Heather Hafeman. The Friday morning general session started with a presentation by NFCA Chair Teresa Rasmussen of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. In reviewing the activities of the preceding 12 months, she explained the rationale and the process which led to the recommended name change for our national trade association from “National Fraternal Congress of America” to “American Fraternal Alliance.” Members later voted to adopt the new name. “The new name does not change who we are and what we do,” said NFCA President and CEO Joseph J. Annotti. “After all, it’s what’s under the hood – not the hood ornament – that’s important.” “The American Fraternal Alliance name does give us the opportunity to create a brand awareness with for the fraternal system that does not currently exist,” Annotti added. “Our challenge is to make sure our new name carries with it the brand identity that say fraternals are credible, trustworthy, and relevant financial services providers and that our non-profit, mutual aid charter delivers a valuable and irreplaceable return on investment to tax-
payers through our charitable and volunteer activities, and by building social capital that strengthens communities across the country. Your association will lead this ambitious effort; but we need the support of every member society to accomplish our objective.” Following the Chair’s report, SPJST took center stage as Susan Skrabanek of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor was recognized as the NFCA Fraternalist of the Year. Following a four-minute video reviewing her involvement in SPJST, community and statewide, NFCA President and CEO Joe Annotti and Chair Rasmussen presented Susan with her trophy. This was indeed a glowing moment for the SPJST as well as a great honor for Sister Susan, who thanked the delegation and in a touching acceptance speech, shared insight regarding her commitment to the fraternal ideal. The Fraternalist of the Year Award is given annually to recognize the nation’s top volunteer among the almost 10 million members affiliated with the NFCA’s member-societies. The award goes to a fraternal benefit society member who has provided outstanding volunteer service in his/her community and excellent leadership in his/her local chapter throughout the past year. Susan received a commemorative trophy and a $1,000 donation to the charity of her choice. Susan has requested that the funding go to the SPJST Education and Nature Center. Congratulations, Susan! In a related presentation, the NFCA presented its Fraternal Insurance Counselor (FICA) of the award to Penny McGuffee of Woodmen of the World/Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society. This award recognized fraternal activities of full-time FICs. Friday’s keynote speaker was bestselling author and world-renowned business expert Peter Sheahan. In his

presentation titled, “Flip: How to Find and Exploit Opportunities in an Upside Down World,” Sheahan encouraged attendees to unleash the spirit of entrepreneurship in their respective organizations. According to Sheahan, we sometimes have a tendency to get conditioned by our past experiences rather than transforming our good ideas into action. The lesson here? We as leaders are not here to simply “preserve” our traditions and ways of the past but to bring new life and vitality to our great fraternal benefit system. Words to take to heart! Every generation sees the world in a unique way, said Sheahan. Human needs never change, but our definitions of whether those needs are being met change dramatically based on how we were brought up and the environment that surrounded us. He drove home the point that for fraternal benefit societies to attract and retain the new generation as customers, the organizations will need to take a fresh approach to branding, sales, and leadership. SPJST attendees divided their time Friday afternoon between a series of educational sessions covering various aspects of fraternal marketing, communication, and organizational development. The afternoon sessions concluded with the election of the various 2010-2011 Section officers. I am certainly honored to have been elected to serve as the NFCA’s State Fraternal Congress Section President. It’s a great position, too, as the State Fraternal Congress Section concerned with the important work of developing networking activities between the various fraternal organizations on the statewide level. The section is also concerned with building and maintaining fraternal relationships with our elected officials on the local, state, and national level. The Saturday morning session included the election of NFCA officers

and board members followed by the presentation of the Marcia D. Heywood Fraternal Communications Award to SPJST Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny. Established by the NFCA’s Communications Section, the award honors an outstanding communicator for contributions to the communications profession and the advancement of the fraternal benefits system. The award was named in honor of the late Marcia D. Heywood, Woodmen Financial Services, Inc., a communications professional who actively volunteered to serve her society, her state fraternal congress and the NFCA. Congratulations, Melanie! In a related presentation, the NFCA presented its Jacobson Rugland Award, which honors an outstanding fraternal actuary was presented to Sharon Giffen of The Independent Order of Foresters. The final general session on Saturday was presented by Michael Dunn, a government relations specialist, who communicated the importance of having members, employees, managers, and directors in tune with the issues facing our respective fraternal organizations. Mr. Dunn conveyed that the strength of our respective fraternal organizations resides in our capacity to honor the relationships that we have with our members — and with the public and that includes honoring our relationships with our elected public officials. In SPJST, we have been able to build on these relationships both independently through our lodges and collectively through our SPJST Home Office initiatives and through our Texas State Fraternal Congress. OAK BROOK, IL—The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) announced that Susan Skrabanek, a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor in Caldwell, Texas, is the 2010 Fraternalist of the Year. Skrabanek was recognized at the 124th NFCA Annual Meeting held September 9 to 11 in Chicago. “Susan comes from a long line of fraternalists—she is a fourth-generation member with her great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all serving as SPJST lodge presidents,” said NFCA President and CEO Joseph J. Annotti. “She’s carrying on that family tradition with her husband Gary and son Kyle, who also are active members.” The Fraternalist of the Year Award is given annually to recognize the nation’s top volunteer among the almost 9 million members affiliated with the NFCA’s member-societies. The award goes to a fraternal benefit society member who has provided outstanding volunteer service in his/her community and excellent leadership in his/her local chapter throughout the past year. All 69 member societies of the NFCA are invited to nominate their top volunteer. Skrabanek received a commemorative trophy and a $1,000 donation to the charity of her choice. This year, Skrabanek has chosen SPJST’s environmental facility, Cooper Farm, as the charity to receive the $1,000 honorarium. Skrabanek, a 50-year member of SPJST, serves as hall manager at Lodge 17 and is responsible for operations,
rentals, maintenance, supplies, bartending, fundraising, paying bills, and federal and state compliance. She was instrumental in the lodge fundraiser to establish the Ben and Martha Trcalek Scholarship. Serving as chairman, Skrabanek secured raffle and auction items, and sold over $500 in raffle tickets. More than $10,000 was raised. Skrabanek is also an SPJST sales agent. In 2009, she wrote more than $2 million of insurance and secured 24 new members for SPJST, many of whom become active in the youth program which Skrabanek holds very dear to her heart, having served as a leader for more than 30 years. She has guided youth in projects to support Ronald McDonald House, troops in Iraq, Adopt-a-County Road clean-up, and nursing home visits. Skrabanek assisted at SPJST Leaders-In-Training retreats where she works with teens to teach them leadership skills that they use at summer camps. She worked with the youth club and lodge members in both the JOIN HANDS DAY and Make A Difference Day projects, cleaning up the cemetery and placing flowers on more than 300 gravesites, sharing stories of some of the SPJST people buried there. Skrabanek serves as District One Youth Counselor, overseeing the youth program, planning summer camp, coordinating youth achievement day and conducting socials and trips for more than 120 SPJST youth in six different youth clubs. She also teaches, costumes, and leads a youth Czech dancing group. On the state level, Skrabanek serves
and her love of volunteering. CENTER PHOTO: Susan is pictured with her husband Gary following her award presentation. RIGHT PHOTO: National Fraternal Congress of America President and CEO Joe Annotti congratulates Susan.
as chairman of the Insurance Committee. She offers input and suggestions to the Insurance Department on its plans and programs. Skrabanek serves on the board of the newly-created SPJST Education and Nature Center, a 501(c)(3) state-ofthe-art educational facility. For Skrabanek, this has meant hours of cleaning and soliciting donations, preparing meals, and securing entertainment for a fundraiser. Skrabanek is involved in many community activities. She assists at the Go Texan Fundraiser and the Scholarship Committee. For the Lions Club, she good-naturedly joined the Caldwell Community team that played a game of basketball against the Harlem Globetrotter Ambassadors. She works the concession stand for the Booster Club. As President of the Caldwell FFA Booster Club, Skrabanek works to provide financial support to the agricultural program. She assisted the FFA youth in all areas of planning a barbecue fundraiser event. She organized a domino tournament and secured more than 100 barbecue judges. She also mentors FFA students with their record books, a crucial part in achieving FFA degrees. Skrabanek teaches physics and chemistry at Caldwell High School. In 2009, the VFW selected her as its High School Teacher of the Year. This honor
was bestowed because of her selfless contributions to her students. She is often the first to get to school and the last to leave, making extra time for her students. She assisted the senior band members in tie-dying tee-shirts for halftime performances. She organizes a two-day Sidewalk Science Spectacular in which her advanced students set up science experiments and demonstrations, and over 700 elementary and intermediate students attend. Skrabanek was also the voice of the Caldwell Hornet Marching Band and Honeybee Dance team at home football games. Students respect and like her because she shows a genuine concern for each and every one of her students. Skrabanek’s husband, Gary, also is a lifetime member of SPJST. Son Kyle continues the tradition and was recently elected as SPJST District One Fraternal Activities Coordinator. 2010 Fraternalist of the Year Runners-Up The NFCA also announced the runners-up for the 2010 Fraternalist of the Year Award: First Runner-Up Anita Lange, Catholic Financial Life Second Runner-Up Patricia Satek, CSA Fraternal Life —SPJST—

trict Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and LaVerne Vanicek. It is always so good to have them meet with us. President Williams greeted everyone and thanked all for their presence. The secretary and treasurer each gave their reports which were approved as read.
Old Business We have had a lot of fundraisers recently for the fire department. On August 29, a barbecue chicken dinner was held here at the lodge hall. Barbara Kuzel and her family furnished the fixings and did a superb job of preparing them. The Kuzels are well known for their barbecue chicken — it’s the best! It was advertised for everyone to bring a dessert. A lot were used for the lunches. There were several special cakes they sold chances on, and some were among the many silent auction items. The attendance was outstanding; that was the most people that I had ever seen in our small town. They came from far and near. They prepared for 600 plates, and all were sold. So many volunteers helped in so many ways to make it such a success. Kenny Arnold, Debbie Skrhak, Regina Peevey, and Glenda Tomykal provided music for everyone’s entertainment which was appreciated so much. The event raised $13,000 which was great. Today, they are putting down the forms for the foundation. The building will be erected, I believe on October 5, 6 and 7. We are so thankful that our city will at last have a fire station. Thanks to all who contributed to make it possible. Then, on September 11, a benefit dance was held in our SPJST building for the fire department. Thanks to those who helped with that. The event raised another $700. Avery Holden from Acme Brick
and Tile in Temple gave us a presentation on its paver bricks. She brought samples and explained what Acme Brick and Tile has to offer. We are not taking orders as of yet—not until we get our plans finalized for the memorial garden where the bricks will be placed. We hope to get something going on that very soon. Vice President Scott Brandon brought us up to date on upcoming SPJST events. District Two Fall Fun Day is coming up on September 19. October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Also, beginning October 1, it will be time to start getting our pennies together for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Brother Frank Klinkovsky spoke and said everything is going well at the Home Office in Temple. He said we can now post our yearly events, but not our weekly or monthly, on the 2011 SPJST Calendar. Laverne Vanicek reported on the recent Lutheran Polka Mass. She said it was very entertaining. The music was outstanding; it was a great band. We are so sorry to report that our Honorable District Two Director Willie Kohutek and wife Adeline were both in the Cameron nursing home. Willie had a stroke, and Adeline has not been well for several months. On Saturday, things even got worse when Adeline fell on her way to the bathroom and broke several of her ribs. She is in real pain and is now in the Cameron hospital. That is so sad. We pray things will be better soon. Hilda Burtis made the motion that we adjourn, seconded by Virginia Williams. Motion carried. Next Meeting—October 11 The next meeting will be October 11. Door prizes were drawn, and a deli-
cious meal served. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting Fraternally, Dorothy Tomascik, Secretary —SPJST—

LEFT PHOTO: SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek tells the Dallas Krouzek officers (Parliamentarian Estelle Smith, Corresponding Secretary Evelyn Trojacek, and Treasurer Jerry Becan) he is honored to be asked to sit at the officers’ table. PHOTO 2: Brian made the belated trip to the September Dallas Krouzek meeting in order to present the Krouzek with the proclamation honoring its 75th anniversary. He was very courageous in his determination to deliver it since the proclamation missed going out in the mail the same weekend as SPJST Lodge 88, Houston’s 100th anniversary in June; the Krouzek doesn’t meet in July; the August meeting was cancelled so that members could attend a funeral; Brian almost didn’t make it because of a spectacular car accident he and his family were lucky to survive; he
also made it through tornadic weather just south of Dallas the night before the meeting; and in September, the Krouzek president was in Tennessee with her daughter and the Krouzek vice president was recuperating at home from high blood pressure! He's our hero for “weathering” all these obstacles to attend! PHOTO 3: These are the do vhyry gifts brought to the meeting to be won by the members through raffle tickets. All the members were overjoyed that Brian also brought a box full of door prizes, just the right amount for every member attending today to receive one! How amazing! We put him to work drawing all the numbers. RIGHT PHOTO: For dessert today, we enjoyed the last part of the June 75th Anniversary cake, that was frozen, but was still just as tasty as the day it was made!
LEFT PHOTO: Brian enjoyed the sandwiches and salads that were the summer’s simple pleasures theme luncheon menu for today, along with the other members. CENTER PHOTO: The men guests always enjoy the luncheon fare as well. RIGHT PHOTO: We don’t know if this will make the Krouzek’s president and vice president happy or sad, but Corre-
sponding Secretary Evelyn Trojacek did a wonderful job of conducting the meeting today in their absence, as Treasurer Jerry Becan and the other members and guests can attest. We will see everyone back for the October 7 meeting, with an Oktoberfest klobase and sauerkraut luncheon theme, and where we plan to wear our krojs for show and tell.

District Two Core Challenge this Sunday
Dear Members, I hope many of you are making plans to attend SPJST District Two Core challenge which will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at Lions Park, located at 4001 Lions Park Drive in Temple, Texas. It has been several years since the last one, and we have been looking forward to this event for quite some time. We do hope the weather will cooperate with us this year. Many of you may be wondering, “What is Core Challenge?” It is a test of physical strength and agility which is a recreational sports program sponsored by SPJST. We thank John Hoelscher for setting this excellent program up several years ago. It has been enjoyed by youth and adults across the state. Youth are divided between boys and girls then into age groups. Each youth goes to the different challenges and gives it his or her best at the Football Throw, Sprint Race, Agility course, Sled Pull, Bent Arm Soldier Hang, Log Throw and the Hercules Challenge. Adults may also test their ability to each of the challenges. At the completion of all events, winners are announced and ribbons are awarded. Joining us this year, Thomas Pechal of the Temple Fire Department will be giving tours of the Temple Fire and Rescue Safety House. This in itself is an adventure with many safety tips which need to be shared with the entire family. We thank Fireman Tom for taking time from his busy schedule to share these safety tips. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m., and events will start at 2 p.m. We ask that those participating wear closed-in sturdy shoes. There will be a $3 entry fee per person. Participants may reg-

September 4 and September 11 were my first two appearances as SPJST State King. September 4 was Westfest, where I rode in Melanie and David’s famous Corvette during the parade. State Queen Jackie and I had a great time throwing candy and waving at the spectators. After the parade, we went to the SPJST booth at the Westfest fairgrounds. At the booth, the Royalty Court helped man a bean bag toss game where fest visitors could win prizes. We were also taken to the cultural amphitheatre where State Youth Director John Hoelscher gave Queen Jackie, Duke Ty, Duchess Chandee, and me a fine introduction to the crowd. The following Saturday, we all met up at Caldwell’s Kolache Fest, where SPJST was sponsoring a kolache eating contest. The Royalty Court walked around the festival, handing out flyers for the big competition. After gathering enough people, the contest began. There were teams, girls, boys, women’s, and men’s divisions. Each was entertaining to watch. However, we kept pretty busy, loading trays with kolaches, cleaning the competition tables, and refilling water cups for the participants. We had a great time, and I felt the day ended all too soon. I am really looking forward to my next appearances, and I would like to thank Jackie, Ty, Chandee, and their families for making the appearances such a wonderful time. —SPJST—

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth: Loved the Beach
My family and I went to the SPJST End of Summer Getaway this year, and we had so much fun! We stayed in a hotel that was right on the beach. This was my first time to go to the beach. My sister Maylee went, too. The night we got there, we had a
party and played games. I won a beach towel for musical chairs and limbo. I gave one to Maylee, and we used them the next day at the beach. We built a mermaid out of sand, and it was really fun. We did not win though.
The last night we had another party, and we did the grand march. I loved the beach, and I can’t wait to go back! Fraternally, Tabor Dowell —SPJST—

Scenes from Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Spaghetti Dinner/Bingo Fundraiser
Dear Readers, On Wednesday night, August 4, 2010, Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club held its annual Spaghetti Dinner/Bingo fundraiser. We arrived early to help Youth Leader Bessie Petr
prepare. She gave us jobs like buttering the toast, icing the brownies, mixing the salad, boiling the pasta, making tea, and filling cups of ice. There was a lot to do, but everyone pitched in to make it all run smooth.
We also brought back to school supplies for Captain Hope’s Kids. Scott Cowan and I started off the dinner with a prayer, and everyone enjoyed a good dinner with enough for seconds. We also had a bake sale.
After dinner, we played bingo until all the prizes were gone. Thanks to everyone who attended and made our fundraiser a success. Rachel McManus —SPJST—

Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words.
The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words.

Dogs for company, cats from habit: more than half of Czech households own a pet
More than half of Czech households keep a pet, a new survey by the Focus research agency has found out. The most popular animals Czechs keep at home are – not surprisingly – dogs and cats, but the reasons for why people get either a canine or a feline companion are different.
Old habits die hard – and pet-keeping habits in the Czech Republic are very much alive and well. Every other Czech household has a pet – dogs, cats, aquarium fish and all kinds of birds are the most frequent ones. Some 78 percent of those polled in a new survey by the Focus agency said they had a dog at home, compared to the 40 percent that keep a cat. These results put Czechs on a par with other nations of Central Europe. Blanka Franková is an analyst for the Focus agency. “The number of dogs per person is very similar to Germany, for instance. These countries have very similar habits and behaviour patterns, and it comes from the long tradition from the times of Austria-Hungary. Having a dog has been very popular since then. On the contrary, there are other European countries where they prefer cats, for instance the UK and France.” Most people, says Ms. Franková, get their dog when they reach the age of 45 – after their kids leave home, they have no one to care for. The other large group consists of young adults – walking a dog gives them more opportunities to meet other people. Researchers were also asking people why they get pets, and found out that the reasons for having dogs and

cats differ to a large extent. “Dogs are preferred as very good companions; that’s the most frequent reason. This is less true for cats. People typically have cats because of family traditions.” Generally speaking, people tend to get the animal that their grandparents – rather than parents – used to have. But Czechs also keep more unusual animals in their homes including rodents, snakes and spiders. Ms Franková says that this is also due to a tradition that goes back decades. “In third place, as far as popularity goes, are aquarium fish. That tradition originated in former Czechoslovakia, when people liked to have aquariums with goldfish. Today it’s very popular because, for many people, breeding fish for sale is a second job.” There are not many relevant surveys from the past, but analyst Blanka Franková – who herself has a cat just like her grandmother did – says that in her opinion, the number of Czechs with pets has been rising over the last two decades. She also offers a possible explanation – people feel evermore alienated and need someone - or something - to look after. — Jan Richter
