Lodge 49, Rowena member Jerrie Schuhmann achieves Age 96
SPJST congratulates Geraldine “Jerrie” Schuhmann, a member of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena who celebrated her 96th birthday on September 20, 2010. Sister Jerrie will be entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Born September 20, 1914, to the late George and Rosalie Schovajsa, of Miles, Texas, Geraldine (later known as “Jerrie”) was the youngest of 10 children. Raymond (died as an infant), and Jerrie at 96 has survived John, Caroline (“Carrie” Merrill), Rudolph, Teresa (“Tracy” Garrett), Edward, Julia (Heinze), William “Buck,” and Albert. At age six, Jerrie started school in the one room school house of Redbank, where she attended first through sixth grades. Her grades seven through 11 (no 12th grade then) were enjoyed at Miles High School, where she graduated salutatorian with a class of about 25 students in 1931. Jerrie attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy for one year in El Paso, Texas, then returned to Miles to wed Earle C. “Dutch” Schuhmann of Rowena in 1936. She was a housewife for many years and mother to two sons, E. Charles Schuhmann, Jr., now in Roanoke, Texas, Franklin J. Schuhmann, now in Odessa, Texas, and one daughter, G.A. “Jeri” Schuhmann of
Seattle, Washington. She now has two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A graduate of San Angelo Business College in 1954, Jerrie and Dutch moved their family to Odessa, which has been their home for over 55 years. She worked as the secretary and bookkeeper to the superintendent of nurses at Medical Center Hospital for 17 years, and after several years at Foreman Electric she was finally replaced by a computer in 1982. Following retirement, she and Dutch enjoyed visiting relatives while on trips to Dallas area, San Antonio, the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver, British Columbia, the Astro Dome in Houston for baseball, and celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary for two weeks in Hawaii. Over 20 years, Jerrie was a contrib-

2011 Calendar Date Deadline Believe it or not — 2011 is just around the corner. We are working
on getting next year’s calendar to the printer so it can be mailed out to all SPJST member households in December. If your district, lodge, or youth club has any important dates or special events that you would like to include on the 2011 SPJST Calendar, please send them by October 1. These should be annual events (not monthly events). Please fax your dates to (254) 773-8087 or email to melaniez@vvm.com. You can also call (800) 727-7578. Please leave the date and event on our voice mail if we do not answer. Thanks!
Lodge 92 Celebrates What a grand event! Lodge 92, Fort Worth celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday, September 18. It was 12 hours of non-stop activities, fun, happiness, and smiles. Lots of Czech kroj, music, dancing, celebration cake, youth games and entertainment, food, and dignitaries. Congratulations, Lodge 92, on a day of success! And, planners, thanks for a job well done. Look for pictures in the October 13 Vestnik.
Lodge 88 Bingo Bonanza On Thursday evening, September 15, Lodge 88, Houston’s bingo was visited by local Fox News television station which covered the event with a neat news story featuring several Lodge 88 members and bingo players. Then, an article appeared in the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, September 19. “We are finally getting the SPJST name out in Houston!” President Patricia Bruce said. During the halftime break at bingo, Chairman Jo Ann Buri announced third quarter
donations to Houston Regional Amber Plan, The Gulf Coast Chapter – Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Memorial Assistance Ministries, Houston Chapter Cystic Fibrosis, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Burn Center, Boys and Girls Country, and Greater Houston Area Special Olympics. “The crowd clapped loudly as their favorites were announced,” President Bruce said. “Several of these donations were suggestions from the bingo players.” Hats off to the dedicated bingo workers, and thanks to the bingo players. “I am very proud of Lodge 88 for achieving our goal of letting the public know who we are and where we are,” President Bruce adds. Pending permission, we are hoping to include the Chronicle article in a future Vestnik. In the meantime, you can view the Fox News clip and the Chronicle article at www.spjst.org in the “In The News” section.
Youth Spectacular Next Week Next week’s October 6 Vestnik will be the annual Youth Spectacular issue. It will be 64 pages with hundreds of photos of SPJST youth in their summertime events. The next regular Vestnik will be dated October 13. Deadline for that issue is Wednesday, October 6 at 5 p.m.
Veterans Day Tribute See page 19 about a special Veterans Day Tribute to all veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces who are SPJST members. The tribute will be printed in the November 10, 2010, Vestnik. Veterans and current service members must be SPJST members. —SPJST—

Vice President Betty Krenek read a poem titled “Summer’s Farewell” which was enjoyed. A moment of silence was observed for our member Virgie Valentine who passed away on September 5. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family. Secretary Elizabeth Creamer was on vacation so Rose Ann Spann was asked to read the minutes from the last meeting, and she served as secretary of the meeting. Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel presented the financial report. Both reports were accepted as presented. Hostesses Shirley Martin, Mary Schneider, and Darlene Tompkins were thanked for the great job that they did. Shirley brought all her lighthouses which were used as decorations along with lighthouse plates on each table. Rose Ann helped Shirley set up the decorations. News Marlene Bass from my church told me that she and Willie Mae Becan stopped in at Manor Care for a visit with Agnes Reznicek, and that she is dong so good and really seems to enjoy living there. Lydia Alholm enjoyed having her grandson Matt Alholm from Illinois in for a short visit. His wife gave him a birthday gift of tickets to fly in for SMU’s football game. Both Matt and his wife graduated from SMU. Lydia said R.L. took them out to lunch at Matt’s favorite place - Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant. I was sorry to hear that Camille Bolcer has been sick. I hope that she is much improved by now. Joe and Mary Ann Kozel, Victor and Shirley Martin, and Stanley and Betty Krenek left Sunday for a trip to the Smokey Mountains. They plan to visit several places and see all the shows. At the next meeting, we will want to hear all about your trip. Elizabeth Creamer was missed at the meeting, but she was off to Branson, Missouri, having a good time and seeing lots of shows. Tracy Horn is one happy greatgrandmother. Several of our members enjoyed attending the 100th anniversary celebration of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth on Saturday, September 18. It was so nice to see and visit with so many friends. Friendship Club member Alene Kercho won the beautiful Stars Over Texas quilt. I didn’t know there was going to be two prizes, and I won the second one — the book, Journeys into Czech-Moravian Texas. I was familiar with the book and was so happy to be the winner of it. It was so nice to be able to meet SPJST Věstník Editor Melanie Zavodny in person at the 100th anniversary celebration. We hope you enjoyed being with us as we enjoyed you both so much. Ann Clagett read another beautiful card from Sidney Bridewell who is in Wisconsin. Sidney is really enjoying herself and plans to return home the middle of September. We will be anxious to see you and hear all about your stay in Wisconsin. Ann also read a really cute story on how to tell the sex of a fly which was very funny. We missed Ella Mae Zmolek and husband Jerry. They attended Jerry’s Braniff meeting. I talked with Ella Mae. She and her husband visited Vickie Kohn now living at Sterling House in Cedar Hill. They enjoyed visiting with them, and I’m sure Vickie did also. Martha Ritchey donated an April 8, 1976, Sewing Circle quilting picture. We appreciated it as so many of our mothers are in the picture. Thank you went out to Joyce Ehrenberger for donating paper cups. We can always use them. We discussed Christmas gifts for our shut-in members. Dorothy J. and I were appointed to take care of this. More will be discussed at our next meeting. Pat Fowler announced the Telico Volunteer Fire Department is having their fundraiser September 25 at the SPJST hall, and everyone is invited. She was selling tickets. They have many nice prizes. Bertha Podhrasky had information

on the Heritage Festival at the State Fair of Texas in the African American Museum on October 10. Everyone is invited. They have a great program scheduled. It sounds like a great day. Irene Prachyl brought the door prize, and it was won by Lil Kosarek. Ann passed out the little gifts. Dorothy Prachyl announced chances are being sold on the Christmas quilt. It was on display and is very pretty. She also thanked everyone that set up, put up, and cleaned up and that the next meeting will be October 14.
Other News Dorothy Prachyl and husband Wesley enjoyed visiting their great-grandson Thomas Nix in Bryan on his second birthday. Ennis played its first home football game and won 28 to 27. I must tell you that Margaret Martinek’s grandson Adam played a great game. He caught two touchdown passes, and Irene Prachyl’s grandson Boston played great, also. He sacked the quarterback, intercepted a pass, and made many great tackles. It really was a good game. On Labor Day, I went to Cowboy Stadium to watch my grandson Kyle’s team Cedar Hill play. It was also a thriller. They won 42 to 41 in overtime. I looked for my friend Georgia Wienken, but didn’t see her. Maybe next time. So till October 14, stay well and happy. We will quilt, have covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. See you! Georgie Morales. Reporter —SPJST—

My first appearances as State Queen were September 4 at Westfest and September 11 at Caldwell Kolache Fest. I had a lot of fun with State King Samuel Vanicek and State Duke Ty and Duchess Chandee. Our first Corvette ride was at Westfest where we worked the SPJST booth under the Cultural Pavilion. It was really neat to see our Czech heritage displayed in so many different ways. The Kolache Eating Contest was a sight to see! It was hilarious watching everyone stuff their faces to see who could eat all of their kolaches the fastest! I can’t wait for our next appearance. a flagged fence and kicking a ball through a few cones. Then, the participant could choose 10 bounces on a pogo stick or jumps of a “lemon twist.” Next, was the javelin throw (pool foam noodles), a toss of a plastic horseshoe, and off to the hurdle. To finish the race, it was up the inflatable stairs, slide to the bottom, vaulting the side to climb the other slide into the bounce house and out the doorway. The three of us explained the course to everyone and “the race was on,” timing each individual. We helped the younger members through the course and cheered everyone on. Lodge 154 Fort Worth youth pitch in to help Rosie
This weekend, we had two community service projects. On Saturday, a small group of us went to the Trinity River Trash Bash. It’s a citywide clean up along the Trinity River. It was so hot! I haven’t been that sweaty ever. There was tons of trash since the river had been high after all the rain we had. Then, on Sunday, a big group of youth club members and parents met for a short meeting then went over to Rosie Steinman’s house to clean up her yard. We had 16 kids and eight adults. When we all pulled up and started getting out of our cars, the neighbors started looking at us and wondering what was going on. We cut the yard, raked up old leaves, and trimmed bushes that had taken over the sidewalk. We filled up her entire curb with bags and branches. It was hard work, but everyone kept going until it was done. When we were done we got to have cupcakes for the September birthdays
(mine and my cousin Sydney’s). Then, Rosie let us all pick out a stuffed animal from a basket. I think she was pretty happy with what we did. Next Meeting—October 17 Our next meeting will be October 17 at Sokol. More next month. Sincerely, Sophie Milan Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth: middle school reflections
Not too long ago, I started the rough stage of middle school. I was most concerned about getting lost since my middle school has over 1,400 students. My worst fear happened twice on the first day! I went into an eighth grade class by mistake, but the teacher was very nice and helped me get to my next class. After a few days, I knew the paths to take to keep my
schedule. Now, four weeks into school, I feel like a pro. I have made many new friends but still made time for my friends from elementary. My favorite class is advanced contemporary literacy. We get to read in class then give presentations on our books and random subjects. I like speaking in front of the class and feel confident, even when I have forgotten my notes. I think I am good at this from practicing in my SPJST youth club activities and my experience at theater camp. Another favorite class is health because my teacher is funny and nice. The homework is interesting and often involves my family members working with me. Now every day, I look forward to going to school. Fraternally, Amanda Hoggard —SPJST—

Top study tips for kids
(StatePoint) Although your child may be spending hours quietly studying for that big test, it doesn’t mean he’s getting the most out of his study time. Help your children study smarter with these tips from Dr. John Stuppy, spokesman for TutorVista, an online tutoring service:
• Schedules: Plan well and prioritize. Study when you’re rested and alert.
• Outlines: Summarize lessons learned in class. Review notes rather than the entire lesson.
• Study Groups: Help kids stay motivated while exchanging ideas and knowledge.
• Flash Cards: Reinforce lessons and help with last minute preparation. • SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. This technique maximizes learning. —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to State YAD with my Mama Dips Carrot Cake. I got first place. Yeah me! I had several friends come over in August. I even had a sleepover. The sleepover was a Hotel Sleepover. Momma was the check-in person. Misty was the luggage carrier to the room. Momma even put York peppermint patties on our
pillows. Daddy was the pool guy. Three of my best friends spent the night—Hayley, Ashley, and Varya. I went to a 50/60 party, and I visited my friend Florence, too, during the summer. She had a birthday. She is 98 years young. Sadly, school is about to start. Boo. I’m going to find out who my teachers are this week at open

Tips to Help Kids Avoid the Pitfalls of Sugary Snacks
(NU) - Sugar can be difficult to pass up, especially when you’re a kid. Today’s children are regularly subjected to sugary diets and uninformed eating habits. Although, parents may not be giving their children foods that are high in sugar intentionally, there are steps that can be taken to help kids avoid the pitfalls of sugar, such as obesity and dental disease. • Monitor snacking choices. Ration empty-calorie foods such as sugarpacked sweets. Instead, offer healthy alternative snacks such as fresh vegetables and fruits and low-fat yogurt with no added sugars.
• Beware of the juice box. Most fruit drinks are low in vitamins and high in sugar. And many contain less than 10 percent real fruit juice. Look for lowor no-sugar substitutes or provide water when kids are thirsty.
Page 17
• Use oral care probiotics. Sugars are going to find their way into young mouths eventually. In addition to regular brushing and flossing, incorporate an oral care probiotic, like EvoraKids (www.myevorakids.com) into their oral health routine. Oral care probiotics work by flooding the mouth with beneficial bacteria, which adhere to tooth surfaces, including pits and fissures in the chewing surfaces, leaving less room for the harmful bacteria that feed on sugars to grow.
• Involve children in meal-time planning and prep. Take advantage of meal preparation to help your child understand the importance of good food choices. Including them in the preparation process can be an important step for children who take more interest in hands-on activities.
• Keep a positive attitude. When your child makes healthy food choices, recognize his accomplishment. Be consistent with verbal praise and rewards when they make good choices. As is the case with many children, behavior is often repeated when there is a positive response.
Wednesday, September 29, 2010
• Be a role model. Probably the most important step is to practice what you preach. Most children learn by watching their parents. When you try to teach a child good behavior, incorporate these same principals into your own everyday actions. Words that conflict with your actions can be confusing to developing minds. —SPJST—
Celebrate the Majesty of Autumn
Every autumn outdoor enthusiasts bear witness to the beautiful show of color and the wonder of Mother Nature. Although spring, summer and winter offer their share of natural splendor, perhaps no season offers the aesthetic appeal of autumn. Vivid yellows, oranges, purples, and reds can be seen in forests and hillsides all across most parts of North America this time of year. The foliage season begins in September for northern-most areas and can stretch into November as one moves southward.
17
Each year thousands of people flock to areas of the country to catch a glimpse of peak color. While many have their preferred spots, it is interesting to explore other areas and compare. Here are some popular areas across North America where individuals can enjoy fall foliage.
* White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire: This national forest in New England offers vivid color, peaking the first two weeks of October.
* Green Mountains, Vermont: Vermont is a great state for fall foliage, and just about every piece of land with some trees will offer a beautiful display. The Green Mountains peak in late September in higher elevations.
* Laurentian Mountains, Quebec: Splendid autumn images are abundant in Canada, too. Leaves are celebrated every year during the last week in September at Tremblant's Symphonie des Couleurs. Peak viewing times start in the end of September. * Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina: This limited-access road runs

through the southern Appalachian Mountains from Virginia to the North Carolina-Tennessee border and offers great views of fall foliage.
* Allegany State Park, New York: This far-west region of New York borders equally prime viewing areas in Pennsylvania. The second week in October is peak viewing time.
* Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Oregon: A special place on the western side of the Cascade Mountains, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge by making it the nation's first National Scenic Area in 1986. The last two weeks of October into November is the best time to view the colors.
Why Do Leaves Change Color? Deciduous trees, or those that shed their leaves, are made up of different color components depending on their biology. During the spring and summer, chlorophyll, or the substance that causes the green hue, is in abundance in leaves. As the autumn arrives and there is less available sunlight, chlorophyll production ceases and the remaining breaks down in the leaves. That allows the other pigments in the leaves to shine through. This produces the orange, red, blue, purple and other shades of autumn. (MS) —SPJST—

In Memoriam
In Memory of Freddy Gerik
Alfred E. “Freddy” Gerik, age 85, of West, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010, at his residence. A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday, September 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption by Monsignor Isidore Rozycki. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Freddy Gerik Tuesday, September 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption with Monsignor Isidore Rozycki, Reverend Ed Karasek, and Reverend Anthony Odiong as celebrants. Military graveside rites followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery conducted by West VFW Post 4819. Mr. Gerik was born October 12, 1924, in West, the son of Frank and Lydia (Milberger) Gerik. He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from West High School. Freddy served his country during World War II with the United States Army Air Corp. On May 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Nita McPherson in Dallas. They owned and operated F.G. Gerik & Son and Gerik Appliance Store for over 50 years until his retirement in 1986. Freddy was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, where he served as usher. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305; Czech Heritage Society, where he served as president and a state vice president; VFW Post 4819, American Legion Post 824, SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood; KJT Society No. 31; and served on the West Independent School District Board. Freddy, known affectionately as “Fireman Fred” to several generations of West Elementary and St. Mary’ school children, dedicated his life to fire service after his family’s home was destroyed by fire when he was a young boy. Inspired by the dedication of his employer R.J. Hruska, he became a volunteer firefighter for the West Fire Department in 1957. He worked his way through the ranks and became fire marshal in 1984 and fire chief in 1989, becoming one of the best chiefs the community of West has
ever known. Freddy lead the charge for fire safety talking to West third graders every year, holding essay contests and poster contests locally, regionally, and at a state level. He beamed with pride when a local student placed at state. In 1991 and 1993, he was named the Central District Fire Fighter of the Year. Freddy not only served West, but was a faithful member of the McLennan County Fire Protection Association, serving as a former president and county fire marshal. He was just as dedicated to the State Fireman’s and Fire Marshal’s Association, where he served in all offices and was named the Firefighter of the Year in 1993 for the State of Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Cyndy Gerik Angelo; brother John Lee Gerik, Sr; and greatnephew John Lee Gerik III. Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Nita Gerik of West; sons Jimmy Gerik and wife Cindy of Dallas and Steven Gerik and wife Melanie of Carrollton; daughters Amy Quaid and husband Tommy of Carrollton and Glenda Keyes of Columbia, South Carolina; nephews John Lee “Buddy” Gerik, Jr., Tommy Gerik, Phil Gerik, and Mike Gerik; niece Karen Bittner; grandchildren Brittany Angelo, Tyler Angelo, Haley Gerik, Nicholas Gerik, Gabriel Gerik, Tyler Clayton, and Chelsea Bell; great-granddaughter Elly Ann Bell; and many other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers were Phil, Tommy, Buddy, and Mike Gerik, Frank Kubacak, Bill Prikryl, Tommy Prikryl, Donald Milberger, and Phil Cherry. Honorary pallbearers were members of the West Volunteer Fire Department and McLennan County Fire Protection Association. Memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Fire Department, McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society, or St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. You are invited to share your thoughts and memories of Freddy in our memorial guest book found at www.aderholdfuneralhome.com. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements. —SPJST—

Czech is a Slavic language, closely related to Slovak and Polish. Spoken by over 10 million people as a first language and at least six million who use it as a second language (mainly in Slovakia), Czech is one of two official and defacto languages of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Czech belongs to the “synthetic” language group, which means that unlike English and other “analytical” languages, different grammatical aspects are expressed in one word by changing the structure of that word adding an ending or prefix, modifying the core of the word, etc. In analytical languages such as English, the same is achieved by using separate auxiliary verbs, pronouns or adjectives while the actual word remains unchanged. In Czech, one word is often sufficient to express what English can only achieve by using multiple words. The accent doesn’t mean a vowel is stressed. It means it’s long. The stress usually falls on the first syllable, with the exception of foreign (non-Slavic) words. Source: http://wikitravel.org/en/Czech_phrasebook
